You've Got A Friend (The Best Of James Taylor)
Personnel includes: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar); David Crosby, Graham Nash (vocals); Danny Kortchamar (acoustic & electric guitar, congas); Gayle Levant (harp); Michael Brecker, David Sanborn (saxophone); Clarence McDonald (piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Carole King (piano); Kenny Ascher (electric piano); Leland Sklar (bass); Bobby West (double bass); Russ Kunkel (drums, congas); Jim Keltner (drums); Joni Mitchell (background vocals). Producers include: Peter Asher, David Spinozza, Lenny Waronker, Russ Titelman, Frank Filipetti. Compilation producer: David Melees. When his debut appeared in 1968, James Taylor was the first non-Beatle to release an album on the Fabs' Apple label. Since then, his long, consistent career has been a model ofintegrity and craft. While he hasn't ventured very far afield as say, his contemporary Joni Mitchell has), Taylor has maintained the gentle, introspective, archetypal singer-songwriter sound he defined over his first couple of albums. Eschewing quantity for quality, he remains a perennial favorite even with infrequent releases of new material. THE BEST OF JAMES TAYLOR is the first collection to combine tracks from his three labels, rounding the set out with the newly recorded "Bittersweet." Though Taylor was among the first to usher in the era of autobiographical singer-songwriters, he also had a number of hits covering others (from Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet it Is" to Carole King's "You've Got a Friend)." The 20 songs here cover the arc of his career, serving to remind that not only do his early recordings remain essential components to the soundtrack of their era, but that Taylor remains one of the smoothest, most agile singers to emerge from the singer/songwriter boom. Story, A
Personnel: Yoko Ono (vocals, piano); Hugh McCracken, David Spinozza (guitar); Joseph DeChristopher, Peter Eggers, Edward Fox, R. Kenneth Price, Michael Robison, David Thoreau Rose (strings); George Young (flute, clarinet); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Lewis Del Gatto (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet); Randy Brecker, Alan Rubin (trumpet); Kenneth Ascher, Leon Pendarvis (keyboards); Gordon Edwards (bass); Rick Marrotta (drums); Arthur Jenkins (percussion); Erin Dickens, Gail Kantor, Louise Messina, Ann E. Sutton, Something Different (background vocals). Principally recorded at Record Plant, New York, New York in 1974 and live in Budapest, Hungary in 1986. Digitally remastered by George Marino and Rob Stevens, Sterling Sound, New York, New York. A continuation of the 1992 compilation WALKING ON THIN ICE, with whichit shares no tracks, A STORY is a fine precis of the '80s and '90s work of possibly the most misunderstood artist in the history of popular music. The album lacks the sonic aggression and playful anarchy of her '60s performance art and early collaborations with John Lennon, as well as the seething anger of her '70s free-jazz-influenced rock & roll albums. Considering that it came after new wave and post-punk artists who were audibly influenced by her trailblazing efforts, Ono's late work simply doesn't sound terribly weird! The songs on A STORY are Ono's rapprochement with the pop mainstream, and while they're typically direct and unflinchingly honest, her plainspoken, often aggressive lyrics are here set in attractive, pleasant synth-oriented pop music. Highlights include the wistful "Hard Times Are Over" and the defiant "She Gets Down on Her Knees." SKU: 1036617

Houses Of The Holy
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric guitars, electric 12-string guitar, background vocals); John Paul Jones (mellotron, organ, synthesizers, bass, background vocals); John Bonham (drums). Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, NewYork and Olympic, London, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. HOUSES OF THE HOLY was the nickname Led Zeppelin concocted for the huge sports arenas they were then playing, because by the time HOUSES OF THE HOLY was released on March 28, 1973, Led Zeppelin was among the biggest touring bands in all of rock. And in producer-composer-guitarist Jimmy Page, they had one of its most gifted arrangers, although compared to their previous two albums, HOUSES OF THE HOLY is more of a bare-bones, back-to-the-roots kind of production. Certainly tunes like "The Rain Song," "Over The Hills And Far Away" and "No Quarter" showcase vocalist Plant's whisper-to-a-scream range, Jones' tasteful use of emerging electronic keyboard technologies, and Page's expressive use of multiple guitar tracks to create an orchestral ambience. But on the whole there is more of an emphasis on the rhythmic interplay between Page, Jones and Bonham, from the James Brown-derived funk of "The Crunge" and the reggaeish dance breaks of "D'yer Mak'er," to the menacing eastern modalities of "Dancing Days" and the rocking raveups of "The Song Remains The Same" and "The Ocean." Recorded during the spring of 1972 at Stargroves (one of Mick Jagger's homes) and through the summer of 1972 at Olympic Studios in London and Electric Lady in New York City. SKU: 1084114

Smile
The Jayhawks includes: Gary Louris (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, melodica); Tim O'Reagan (vocals, guitar, drums, percussion); Marc Perlman (guitar, mandolin, synthesizer, bass, percussion); Kraig Johnson (guitar, background vocals). Additional personnel: Eric Heywood (pedal steel guitar, dobro); Bob Ezrin (accordion, keyboards, synthesizer, percussion, background vocals); Karen Grotberg (keyboards, background vocals); Patrick Seymour (synthesizer); Joseph Bishara (programming); The Armadillo String Quartet. Recorded at Flower Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Following founding member Mark Olson'sdeparture, The Jayhawks, using drum machines and loops, continued to distance themselves from the y'alternative universe they helped create. On their sixth record, SMILE, these Minneapolis natives follow the creative vision of Gary Louris, who wrote or co-wrote every song. Of course, the band don't make a complete break with their rootsy past, as shown by "What Led Me to This Town," and "Better Days," songs with enough twang to satisfy long-time fans. With tracks like "Pretty Thing," they do a fine job maintaining the grainier guitar style of their previous album, SOUND OF LIES. The most radical departure for the band comes here via a songwriting collaboration with famed rock producer Bob Ezrin (Kiss/Pink Floyd) who also oversaw the creation of SMILE. SKU: 1073210

Rocket To Russia (Remastered And Expanded)
The Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass, background vocals); Tommy Ramone (drums). Producers: Tony Bongiovi, T. Erdelyi. Reissue producers: Bill Inglot, Gary Stewart. Engineers: Ed Stasium, Don Berman. Principally recorded at Media Sound, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Legs McNeil and Arturo Vega. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot (Digiprep). The third of the Ramones' original quartet of albums, 1977's ROCKET TO RUSSIA is actually a big improvement over the slightly disappointing LEAVE HOME, released earlier in 1977. While not as solidly perfect as RAMONES, ROCKET TO RUSSIA contains very little fat and boasts possibly the finest songs in the band's entire repertoire, "Rockaway Beach" and the immortal "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker." "We're a Happy Family" and "Teenage Lobotomy" are only slightly lesser tracks, and the covers of the Trashmen's gloriously silly "Surfin' Bird" and Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance" are conceptually perfect, linking the Ramones neatly with their garage rock and bubblegum roots. The bonus tracks on the 2001 Rhino reissue are less revelatory than the 1976 concert contained on the LEAVE HOME reissue, a motley but entertaining collection of demos, single mixes and one B-side, "It's a Long Way Back to Germany," butthis disc's carefully remastered sound makes it sound better than all previous incarnations of the album, highlighting the extent to which the cleaner production complements the group's poppier, slightly more complex new songs. Mingus Plays Piano
Solo performer: Charles Mingus (piano). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded on July 30, 1963. Originally released on Impulse! in 1963. Includes original release liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson. This album is unique in Mingus' enormous catalogue. As the title indicates, the famous bassist takes to the ivories-solo-to give life to his dazzling improvisational art. At first it seems odd to hear Mingus without one of his trademark interactive and exploratory ensembles. But the sensibility that he brings to this collection of piano pieces bears all the signs of the composer's genius. In the first piece, "Myself When I Am Real," turbulence and aching beauty merge in Mingus'spontaneous unfolding of phrases. Such standards as "Body And Soul" and "Memories Of You" are given personal, harmonically intriguing readings that blend in seamlessly with a Mingus original like "Old Portrait." In many ways, it is a treat to hear the artist working in this pared down, quieter atmosphere, as it allows one to concentrate more intently upon the range and compositional brilliance of this incomparable figure. Last Temptation, The (Limited Edition)
THE LAST TEMPTATION is based on a three-part comic book series, created by Neil Gaiman, author of the comic "Sandman." Personnel: Alice Cooper, Chris Cornell (vocals); Stef Burns (guitar, background vocals); Dan Wexler (guitar); Derek Sherinian (keyboards, background vocals); John Purdell (keyboards); Greg Smith (bass, background vocals); David Vosikkinen (drums); Lou Merlino, Mark Hudson, Craig Copeland, Brett Hudson (background vocals). Producers: Duane Baron, John Purdell, Don Fleming, Andy Wallace. Engineers: John Agnello, Duane Baron, Andy Wallace. Recordedat Music Grinder Studios, Hollywood, California; Sony Recording Studios, Santa Monica, California; Record One Studios, Sherman Oaks, California; Devonshire Studios, North Hollywood, California. In 1994, coming off the commercial disappointment of HEY STOOPID, Alice Cooper decided to switch gears and composed his first concept album since the '70s, THE LAST TEMPTATION. Cooper worked with a trio of producers--Andy Wallace (Slayer), Don Fleming (Hole), and Duane Baron (Ozzy Osbourne)--to create an interesting sonic balance. A number of renowned rock artists again lend their songwriting talents to this collection. However, only Chris Cornell actually plays on the album, unlike the all-star cast of musicians who appeared on Cooper's last release. While the album wasn't a major hit in the United States, it was Alice's third top-10 release in England and easily his best and most satisfying work in years. The pair of songs that Cornell co-wrote with Cooper, "Stolen Prayer" and "Unholy War," are the album's best; it's a headbanger's dream come true to hear these two exceptional singers share the mic. Other highlights include the opening epic, "Side Show"; the dramatic album closer, "Cleansed By Fire"; and the melancholy "It's Me." Although THE LAST TEMPTATION was a great return to form for Alice, his failure to promote it with a tour made it one of his most overlooked albums. SKU: 1053247

Full Title: The Rose That Grew From Concrete Vol. 1. Personnel includes: 2Pac, Q Tip, Mos Def, Outlawz, Geronimo Pratt, Dead Prez, Tre, K-Ci & Jo Jo, 4th Avenue Jones, Babatunde Olatunge, DannyGlover, Quincy Jones, Russell Simmons, Nikki Giovanni, Sarah Jones, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Sonya Sanchez, Lamar Antwon Robinson, Rha Goddess, Dan Rockett, Mac Mall. Producers include: Jamal Joseph, QD3, Eric Rico, Voza Rivers, Mos Def. Engineers include: Tyson Leeper, Michael Dunston, Denis Degher. Includes liner notes by Afeni Shakur. Tupac Shakur's work and iconic importance have attracted an even greater degree of respect and attention after his death than they did during his lifetime. Unparalleled in the hip-hop world, Tupac's posthumous fame finds its precedents in rockers like Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison, bad boys whose message was deeper than their hedonistic image suggested. The Tupac legacy continues apace with THE ROSE THAT GREW FROM CONCRETE. Essentially a various artists collection, it finds a wide variety of artists contributing spoken word performances of Shakur's poetry. Dashes of jazz, reggae, funk, and hip-hop accompany rapper Mos Def, poet Nikki Giovanni, actor Danny Glover, and others as they interpret the prose of the late rapper. Despite Shakur's gangsta image, most of his poems reflect a belief in positive social change through the efforts of an enlightened community that he sought to encourage. SKU: 1048648

I Will Say Goodbye
Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Eddie Gomez (bass); Eliot Zigmund (drums). Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California from May 11-13, 1977. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1992, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Bill Evans' 1977 release, I WILL SAY GOODBYE, is an impassioned album that hauntingly foreshadows his own death only three years later. On this album, we hear Evans' penultimate trio, comprised of bassist Eddie Gomez, and drummer Eliot Zigmund. Sewing of a delicate musical balance, the trio weaves a warm and organic blanket sound, rarely falling into the standard four beat jazz groove. Instead, Evans and company create tension and release in the music, as they play off one another in a complex yet lucid manner. Indeed, the beauty of Evans' conception lies in his (and his sidemen's) ability to imply the music's tempo and feel, rather than lay it out in even, metered beats. Evans begins each tune with a rubato piano introduction, employing a variety of musicalshades, and tonal clusters. As each song unfolds, Gomez and Zigmund complement the pianist with subtle yet pointed rhythmical nuances. This is most effective on Michel Legrand's composition, "Orson's Theme," and Herbie Hancock's, "Dolphin Dance." In addition, the ballads "I Will Say Goodbye" and "Seascape" bring out the pianist's penchant for dark, melancholic music. SKU: 1004624

Restless On The Farm
Personnel: Jerry Douglas (dobro, lap steel guitar, Weissenborn guitar); Steve Earle (vocals, guitar); John Cowan, Tim O'Brien, Maura O'Connell (vocals); Bryan Sutton, Russ Barenberg (guitar); Sonny Landreth (dobro, slide guitar); Bela Fleck (banjo); Sam Bush (mandolin); Edgar Meyer, Viktor Krauss (bass); John Gardner (drums, percussion). Principally recorded at Masterlink Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. "The Ride" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance. Like Bela Fleck and Mark O'Connor, Jerry Douglas is a grassroots instrumentalist of undeniable prowess. A master of the dobro and lap steel guitar, Douglas is one of the most in-demand session musicians in Nashville. RESTLESS ON THE FARM is a testament to his musical virtuosity. Guest stars abound, with Steve Earle, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck and Maura O'Connell contributing to many of the 11 tracks. Throughout the conglomeration of styles on this album, however, the focus is on Douglas' distinctive glissando and tasty steel picking. From the very traditional bluegrass opening of "Things In Life," the musical bar is set at a high mark. Stylistically, however, things begin to change rather quickly. The dark, diminished sound of "Turkish Taffee" brings to mind images of it's namesake. Later, a sparse cover of the Johnny Cash classic "Don't Take Your Guns To Town," with Steve Earle, is a standout change of pace. A touch of the Irish is presented on thebeautiful "A Tribute To Peador O'Donnell." Rounding out the rest of the disc are a swinging read of Erroll Garner's "Like It Is," "The Ride," a unique duet with Bela Fleck, and the comic "The TV Doctor." SKU: 1009863

Painkiller [Remastered]
Judas Priest:Rob Halford (vocals); K.K. Downing, Glenn Tipton (guitar); Ian Hill (bass); Scott Travis (drums). Principally recorded at Miraval Studios, Brignoles, France in 1990. Includes liner notes by Judas Priest. Digitally remastered by Jon Astley. Judas Priest's 1990 release, PAINKILLER, shows the band returning to ferocious metal after such musical detours as 1986's TURBO. It also proved to be the British band's last outing with original singer Rob Halford. Drummer Scott Travis (ex-Racer X) makes his Priest debut here, while the sound and songwriting is comparable to thrash/speed metal. The album-opening title track is one of Priest's heaviest and greatest songs (brace yourself before it kicks in!), and the band takes no prisoners on such titles as "Hell Patrol" and "A Touch of Evil." An inspired way to close out Halford-era Priest. SKU: 1070238

Ten
Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder (vocals); Mike McCreedy, Stone Gossard (guitar); Jeff Ament (bass); Dave Krusen (drums). Additional personnel: Walter Gray (cello); Rick Parashar (piano, organ, percussion). Engineers: Dave Hills, Don Gilmore, Adrian Moore. Recorded at London Bridge Studios, Seattle, Washington from March to April, 1991. TEN, Pearl Jam's debut album, was released less than a month before Nirvana's NEVERMIND, and although it took longer to climb the pop charts it also hung around longer, eventually outselling its Seattle rival. Together, the two albums reinvigorated rock and roll, whose share of the pop marketplace had been slipping through the late 1980s. But while Nirvana's bruising punk rock was an all-out assault on the classic-rock dinosaur, Pearl Jam's accomplished hard rock was an attack from within the system. The drawn-out, bluesy guitar riffing and anthemic choruses that dominated TEN instantly gave away roots in the same popular hard rock and heavy metal that Nirvana was intent on crushing. Indeed, before forming Pearl Jam, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament (who between them wrote most of the music on TEN) were the core of two '70s-influenced metal bands, Green River and Mother Love Bone. But in place of the self-aggrandizing, larger-than-life singers that led most such bands, Gossard and Ament found Eddie Vedder, a ravage-voiced vocalist more apt to identify with the abused and misunderstood children he was singing about than with any other rock stars. When he exploded into one of TEN's many memorable choruses, Vedder offered transcendence for the people who needed it most. The storyline of the album's breakthrough single, "Jeremy," was typically vague and elusive (despite a highly suggestive video), but the message was not. The meek and the misunderstood, Pearl Jam seemed to be saying, would rise and inherit the world, even if it was only a world of their owninvention. SKU: 5063017

For The Last Time (Live From The Astrodome)
Personnel: George Straight (vocals, guitar); Benny McArthur (guitar, fiddle); Joe Manuel (acoustic guitar); Rick McCrae (guitar); Mike Daily (steel guitar); Gene Elders (fiddle); Jeff Sterms (keyboards); Terry Hale (bass); Mike Kennedy (drums); Wes Hightower, Marty Slayton (background vocals). Recorded live at the Astrodome, Houston, Texas on March 3, 2002. This live album marks a major event in more than one way. While any George Strait concert is an event in itself, this is thefirst live album the singer has released in over 25 years of recording. It's doubly significant as it marked the last night of the Houston Rodeo at the Astrodome, a four-decade tradition. Strait's name had become synonymous with the Rodeo by this time, so it was only naturally for him to play on its final night at the Dome, a pomp-and-circumstance affair that was even attended by President Bush. The songs Strait performs with his kickin' live band run the gamut of his repertoire. There's the old-school Western swing of "Take Me Back to Tulsa," the New Traditionalist semi-modernism of "Write This Down," the honky-tonk humor of "Murder on Music Row," and much more, all delivered with Strait's rare combination of taste and charisma. Fittingly, things close out to much fanfare with the elegiac "The Cowboy Rides Away." SKU: 1080744

Spirit Room, The
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular tracks, multimedia computer files and a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. The Enhanced portion includes a digital photo gallery and a music video for "Everywhere." Personnel includes: Michelle Branch (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Shanks (guitar, keyboards, bass, programming); Patrick Warren (keyboards); Kenny Aronoff, Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Lars Fox (programming). Recorded at Sunset Sound,Henson Recording Studio and Ananda Studios, Hollywood, California. Michelle Branch was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Michelle Branch has a voice that'll be familiar to fans of alternative rock radio, since it's that breathy, close-miked sound beloved of pop-rock girls from Fiona Apple to Britney. She uses it to good effect on her debut, THE SPIRIT ROOM, accompanied by a coterie of LA session veterans who provide her with the sort of assured musical expertise that only big bucks can provide. Each song is hook-laden and charmingly sung. Standouts are the infectiously poppy album-opener "Everywhere" and the oddly retro-sounding "Sweet Misery." The overall effect conjured by THE SPIRIT ROOM is of an assured pop debut--Branch certainly leaves you curious to hear her next effort. SKU: 1071061

More Adventurous
Rilo Kiley: Jenny Lewis (vocals, guitar, harmonica, Mellotron, keyboards); Blake Sennett (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, Mellotron, ARP synthesizer); Jason Boesel (vocals, drums, tambour, percussion); Pierre De Reeder (bass instrument). Producers: Mike Mogis; Mark Trombino; Jimmy Tamborello. Much has been made about Rilo Kiley's fusion of country and rock but with MORE ADVENTUROUS, the band's first recording released outside of the Saddle Creek camp, this California quartet creates a sound more along the lines of Belle & Sebastian's brand of twee pop. The bittersweet ting of primary lyricist and singer Jenny Lewis's words is offset by a leavened use of string arrangements. This combination proves irresistible, particularly on the anti-war opener "It's a Hit," with its compelling mix of brassy fanfare, shoo-bop harmonies, and Velvet Underground-like guitar riffs, all of which only a hint at the audio delights lying in wait over the course of this record. Mellotron and Moog add a melancholy air to the heartbreak-defining "Does He Love You," and "I Never" hints at Rilo Kiley's country side via Lewis's aching, Loretta Lynn-like phrasing and the atmospheric blending of strings and pedal steel. This adventurous musical outing leaves room for Blake Sennett's lo-fi, solo acoustic tune "Ripchord," the Blondie-esque "Portions for Foxes," and "Love and War (11/11/46)," a New Wave-like rocker inspired by Lewis's visit to her grandfather in a VA hospital.
