Horizontal
For the follow-up to their classic, Beatles-influenced psych-pop debut, the BEE GEES didn't close ranks and beef up their hit-making machine. Rather, they became even more eccentric and idiosyncratic. Taking a cue from the Fab Four and the Kinks, these Aussies began to sound even more British than they did before. The same inital elements were still in place (quavery harmonies, sophisticated songcraft, etc.), but the lyrics began to take a more abstract turn. Any album that includes the song titles "Lemons Never Forget" and "The Earnest of Being George" (wait a minute, is this an XTC album?) has got more on its mind than breaking into the top 40. Naturally, that's not to say the Gibbs didn't still have and practice their knack for heartfelt, effective poptunes. "Massachusetts" and "With The Sun In My Eyes" are both prime examples of the brothers' poignant popcraft at work. SKU: 1004082

Do You Get The Blues
Personnel includes: Jimmie Vaughan (vocals, guitar, tambourine); Lou Ann Barton (vocals); Tyrone Vaughan (guitar); Herman Green (flute); James Cotton (harmonica); Greg Piccolo (tenor saxophone); Bill Willis (Hammond B-3 organ); Tommy Shannon, Roscoe Beck (bass); Billy Horton (upright bass); George Rains (drums, bongos); Jose Galeano (congas, percussion); Greg Sain, James Edward Sain, Rayvon Foster, Charlie Whittington (background vocals). Engineers include: John Hampton, Jared Tuten, Andy Taub. Recorded at Ardent, Memphis, Tennessee; Brooklyn Bridge, Wire, Austin, Texas; Blue World Music Studios, Dripping Springs, Texas. DO YOU GET THE BLUES won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. In the decade following his departure from The Fabulous Thunderbirds and the death of his youngerbrother Stevie Ray, Jimmie Vaughan quietly carved out a critically acclaimed solo career steeped in a fusion of soul and blues. Despite parting ways with Nile Rodgers, (who produced Vaughan's first two records), the laid-back Texan goes down the same creative path in assuming the production helm for DO YOU GET THE BLUES? Recorded at Memphis' famed Ardent Studios, Vaughan's third album reunites him with legendary Federal Records house musician Bill Willis, whose juicy organ playing brings to mind the late Bill Doggett on the instrumental opener "Dirty Girl," funky shuffle "Robbin' Me Blind," and gospel-flavored "Out Of The Shadows". Throughout, Vaughan's often underrated and understated style of guitar playing continues to impress whether it's the chunky riffs lightly sprinkled throughout the yearning "Without You" or the crackling twang bubbling throughout the late night "Slow Dance Blues." Longtime friend and fellow Texan Lou Ann Barton also puts in a cameo, wrapping herself in a lusty duet with her fellow Austinite on Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "In The Middle Of The Night" before making like Carla Thomas to Vaughan's Otis Redding on the righteous "Power Of Love." Live NYC '97
Personnel: Johnny Winter (vocals, guitar); Mark Epstein (bass, background vocals); Tom Compton (drums). Engineers: Chris Andersen,Nevessa Productions, Joe Johnson. Recorded live at The Bottom Line, New York, New York in April 1997 and at Studio 900, New York, New York. Old-fashioned Texas blues man Johnny Winter may not seem like a high-tech kind of guy, but LIVE IN NYC '97 proves otherwise. Through his web site, Winter invited fans to vote for their favorite blues standards. Then he got together a hot young rhythm section, bassist Mark Epstein and drummer Tom Compton, rented out the Bottom Line in New York City, and invited members of his fan club for a special private show in April, 1997. This impressive live album is the result. There's only one Winter original, his collaboration with/tribute to Johnny "Guitar" Watson, "Johnny Guitar." The rest of the nine-song set consists of blues standards by Snooks Eaglin, Elmore James, Ray Charles, and Albert King, whose "Hideaway" gets a treatment that's close to definitive. In front of an obviously appreciative crowd, and with a solid, empathetic rhythm section behind him, Winter seemingly effortlessly pulls off some of the best playing of his career. Essential for fans. SKU: 1001320

Liberation Music Orchestra (1969)
Personnel: Charlie Haden (bass); Dewey Redman (alto & tenor saxophone); Gato Barbieri (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Mike Mantler (trumpet); Don Cherry (cornet, Indian wood & bamboo flutes); Roswell Rudd (trombone); Bob Northern (French horn, wood blocks, crow call, bells, whistle); Howard Johnson (tuba); Pery Robinson (clarinet); Carla Bley (piano, tambourine); Sam Brown (guitar, Tanganyikan guitar, thumb piano); Paul Motian, Andrew Cyrille (drums, percussion). Includes original release liner notes by Charlie Haden. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Charlie Haden's first album, LIBERATION MUSIC ORCHESTRA, appeared when he was 32 years old. Desipte his youth, his musical experience was already deep and wide; he spent time in Ornette Coleman's groundbreaking quartet, then found a place in the ensembles of both Keith Jarrett and Alice Coltrane. For this album, his assembled orchestra includes an impressive list of the cream of the late-'60s jazz avant garde, including Carla Bley, Don Cherry, Gato Barbieri, Dewey Redman, Michael Mantler, Paul Motian, and Roswell Rudd. Bley, who played piano and wrote three of the pieces, would follow a similar musical path on her own subsequent releases. The set is informed in large part by Haden's interestin the Spanish Civil War and his ongoing social and political concerns. What makes this set so engaging is that he's captured the heart of the matter with honest musical passion. SKU: 4124536

Loa Project [ECD]
Personnel includes: DJ Cam (turntables, scratches); China, Franck Black (vocals); Bufro (guitar, bass); The Abstract Philharmonic Orchestra. This extraordinary French hip-hop sculptor (nee Laurent Daumail) brings us the first installment in what is hopefully a long line of Loa Projects (confusingly, there's no Volume 1). DJ Cameffortlessly fuses jazz, dub, minimalism, and hip-hop in his customary downbeat style. "Juliet" starts off in classic DJ Cam fashion, running into a quasi-house/acid jazz track with a captivating vocal, almost creating a new electronic music genre in the process. The sinister-sounding "Candyman," sampled from the movie of the same name, sounds razor-sharp with its strings and flutes over haunting beats. "DJ Cam Sound System" has a refreshing improvisational feel--no loops, overdubbing, or overproducing. Cole Porter's "You Do Something to Me," featuring vocalist China, is sure to be a favorite on the lounge circuit, with its smoky, sultry feel, while "Angel Heart," complete with vinyl noise and languorous piano, is a perfect finale. Buy the vinyl, too! SKU: 1032877

Miles Smiles [SACD]
Miles Davis Quintet: Miles Davis (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Ron Carter (acoustic bass); Tony Williams (drums). Recorded at the Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, New York on October 24 & 25, 1966. Originally released on Columbia (9401). Includes liner notes by Anthony Tuttle and Bob Belden. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Mark Wilder and Rob Schwarz (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Miles Davis' restless curiosity would never allow him to look back, and as a result, he sought out new blood and fresh challenges over the course of six decades of innovation. When modernists such as Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor and John Coltrane began stretching the parameters of form and improvisation in the early '60s, Davis was leery, even hostile at first. But as the saying goes, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em--and by 1964 Miles had assembled his own dream team of innovative young turks, who began to vivisect the entire Davis book, before moving confidently into uncharted waters. MILES SMILES marks a sea change in which the Miles Davis Quintet really begins to stretch out and confront the avant-garde with a modern thrust of their own--resulting in one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time. Performances such as "Orbits" and "Ginger Bread Boy" redefine all notions of swing, as Ron Carter and Tony Williams treat the beat in a free-flowing manner, superimposing new chords and meters over a fulminating 4/4 pulse. Pianist Hancock veers away from traditional block chord accompaniments, often providing spare polytonal counterpoint or laying out altogether. Tenorsaxophonist Shorter's harmonic and melodic abandon inspire Davis to explore bold new vocal nuances in his phrasing, even as his classic compositions--such as "Footprints"--alter the harmonic language of jazz forever. And from the joyous hyper-funk of "Freedom Jazz Dance" to the serene misterioso of the trumpeter's remarkable ballad "Circles," MILES SMILES defines a new performance standard for collective improvisation. House Of Blue Light, The [Remastered]
Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals, harmonica, congas); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards, synthesizer); Roger Glover (synthesizer, bass); Ian Paice (drums). Recorded at The Playhouse, Stowe, Vermont. During the '80s, Deep Purple, like Aerosmith, was a hard rock giant of the prior decade that ended up getting a second career chance. Three years after the band's triumphant 1984 comeback, PERFECT STRANGERS, the band released HOUSE OF BLUE LIGHT, a follow-up that continued showcasing the band's sweeping brand of hard rock. Anchored by the solid rhythm section of drummer Ian Paice and bassist/producer Roger Glover, the formidable triumvirate of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, and Jon Lord drove these songs of devil women and outlaw living. As always, Gillan's forceful vocals and quirky lyrics brought to life femme fatales in songs like "Call ofthe Wild," "Hard Lovin' Woman," and the bluesy "Mitzie Dupree." The iron-lunged vocalist even wails a bit on harp before tossing in the kind of glass-breaking phrasing on "Black & White" that made "Highway Star" such a classic cut. When Lord's new-fangled synthesizers aren't replicating string sections on "The Unwritten Law," his trademark organ juices up songs like "Bad Attitude." Blackmore tattoos his distinctive string-bending technique all over BLUE LIGHT and particularly shines on "Dead or Alive." SKU: 5053743

Frenzy
Recorded in the 1950's. FRENZY is one of several excellent sets that offer a compelling entry point into the crazy musical world of Screamin' Jay Hawkins (another is the best-of collection, VOODOO JIVE). While it opens with his best-known song, "I Put a Spell on You," FRENZY makes it clear that Hawkins' interests stretched far and wide. The set includes punchy rhythm & blues pieces, nonsensical forays into the worlds of pop and rock, wild cabaret numbers, and tracks of faux-operatic mayhem. The first four numbers give one the impression of Hawkins as a bluesy shouter, singing of demons and dark magic. But in steps "I Love Paris," and Hawkins is singing in front of an orchestra like a maniacal Broadway star. There's passion, invention, and plain-old entertainment fun in FRENZY. The 14 songs include a mix of originals and songs by everyone from Leiber & Stoller to Cole Porter. Yet it all comes out soundinglike no one else in the world but Hawkins. SKU: 4134278

Fittest Of The Fittest, The [Remastered]
Burning Spear: Winston Rodney (vocals, percussion); Michael Wilson, Devon Bradshaw (guitar); Herman Marquis (saxophone); Bobby Ellis (trumpet, flugelhorn); Anthony Johnson (keyboards, Moog synthesizer); Anthony Bradshaw (bass); Nelson Miller (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Winston Wright (clarinet, piano); Glen DaCosta (saxophone); David Madden (trumpet); Barry Bailey, Calvin Cameron (trombone); Bobby Kalphat, Robby Lyn (organ); Peter Ashbourne (synthesizer); Alvin Haughton (percussion). Recorded at Tuff Gong Studios, Kingston, Jamaica in 1983. Includes liner notes by Roger Steffens. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Although Bob Marley's 1981 death left a huge void in reggae music, Burning Spear remained a model of consistency as he continued churning out his solid brand of roots music laced with plenty of references to Jah and Rastafari. By the time Spear (aka Winston Rodney) released 1983's THE FITTEST OF THE FITTEST, he'd already released a string of classic albums in the late '70s and had tried his hand at acting in the cult film ROCKERS. As always, Rodney pays tribute here to long-time hero Marcus Garvey ("Old Boy Garvey") along with his visions of returning to the African motherland ("Repatriation," "Vision"). Having used a number of well-known Jamaican session musicians on past albums, (including the Wailers on 1980's HAIL H.I.M.), Spear instead surrounded himself with a crew of unknown players. Regardless of their anonymity, Rodney's eye for talent once again proved infallible as the playing on "2000 Years" and "Bad To Worst" overflowed with bubbling bass lines and vibrant horn arrangements. Travelogue (Deluxe Edition)
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Joni Mitchell (vocals); Andy Findon, Helen Keen, Anna Noakes (flute); Nick Bucknall (clarinet); Sue Bohling (oboe, cornet); John Anderson(oboe); Julie Andrews (bassoon); Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Plas Johnson (tenor saxophone); Kenny Wheeler (flugelhorn); Herbie Hancock (piano); Billy Preston (Hammond B-3 organ); Larry Klein (electric bass); Brian Blade (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion). Recorded at Air Studio, Lyndhurst Hall, London, England; Ocean Way, Hollywood, California; Recorded One, Sherman Oaks, California; Market Street, Venice, California. With all the artistic milestones behind her, Joni Mitchell would seem to have attained the kind of iconic status that allows her to do whatever she damn well pleases. Previous to TRAVELOGUE, her last album consisted almost entirely of standards from the Great American Songbook. This time around, she decided to revisit two discs' worth of (mostly) her more obscure material from various stages of her career, with full orchestral accompaniment. From a lesser artist, such indulgences might scream (or at least whisper) "loss of direction." Leave it to an artist of Mitchell's stature, however, to make such an ostensibly questionable move pay off in spades. As it turns out, the asymmetrical, artsong-like aspect of Mitchell's more progressive compositions lends itself so well to orchestral arrangements that you'll be hard pressed to remember what tunes like "Otis and Marlena" (from DON JUAN'S RECKLESS DAUGHTER) or "Cherokee Louise" (NIGHT RIDE HOME) sounded like in their original versions. Though there are a couple of Mitchell's staples included here, one of the most striking achievements of TRAVELOGUE may be the way it renovates the reputation of some of the tunes from Mitchell's less well-regarded '80s efforts. Okay, Joni, you've pulled it off; now will you give us another batch of new songs? SKU: 1077410
