Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward

Ultra Obscene
Breakbeat Era: Leonie Laws (vocals); Jeff Rose, Adrian Utley (guitar); Roger Beaujoulais (vibraphone); Richard Glover (bass); Max Sedgeley (drums); Roni Size, DJ Die. Drum-and-bass master Roni Size and his Reprazent cohort DJ Die joined forces with Bristol-based singer/songwriter Leonie Laws to create BreakbeatEra. Though the beats are excellent and the tracks move at a fierce tempo, Laws' vocals are what make ULTRA OBSCENCE stand out among other records from this genre. On tracks like "Rancid," "Ultra Obscene," and "Bullitproof," Laws' singing blends in superbly with the killer soundscapes provided by Size and Die. Fans of Size will be pleasantly surprised by the fact that instead of the jazzy, moody feel that the artist is known for bringing to his tracks, his work on ULTRA OBSCENE is hardcore drum-and-bass. Other standouts include "Late Morning," "Animal Machine," and "Control Freak." ULTRA OBSCENE is sure to win over listeners not familiar with the drum-and-bass genre. SKU: 5059074

Different Class
Pulp: Jarvis Cocker (vocals, acoustic, electric & 12-string guitars, Vocoder, synthesizer, MicroMoog, Mellotron); Mark Webber (acoustic & electric guitars, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Russell Senior (electric guitar, violin); Candida Doyle (Farfisa organ, Fender Rhodes piano, Minimoog synthesizer, synthesizer); Steve Mackey (bass); Nick Banks (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Anne Dudley (conductor, arranger); Chris Thomas (guitar, keyboards); Matthew Vaughan, Olle Romo, Anthony Genn, Mark Haley (programming); Gavyn Wright. Recorded at The Town House and Air Lyndhurst, London, England. Judging from the tone of the songs on DIFFERENT CLASS, Jarvis Cocker, Pulp's lead singer, chief lyricist and main attraction, seems like a spiteful little bastard playing Robin Hood--or, maybe, Robin Hood playing the spiteful little bastard. His suave thespian delivery of songs about English class warfare and an outsiders' existence, suggests a class-conscious Bryan Ferry. Andhe fronts a band as majestic, glammy and multi-faceted as the Eno-era Roxy Music playing a form of modern-day Rocky Horror Britpop. Pulp's is a thoroughly British pose--the themes, colloquialisms and topics of DIFFERENT CLASS have little to do with American culture. Like E.M. Forster novels, however, the best songs play with emotions of societal existence, which translate easily across the ocean. "Mis-Shapes," an acoustic-guitar-fueled call-to-arms for the working class young, and "Common People," the tale of a young upper-class female who goes slumming for a commoner lover ("I wanna sleep with common people") and finds a venomous Cocker, are alone worth the price of admission. And judging by his coldly detached description of a rave in "Sorted Out For E's & Wizz," Cocker finds no solace in the counterculture either, which suggests that the different classes he's talking about aren't simply shaped by the contents of pocketbooks but the contents of hearts and minds. Swingin' Affair, A [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Nelson Riddle (conductor). Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. The late-'50s recordings of Sinatra were the ones that firmly cemented in the public consciousness the image of the hip, swinging cat with the fedora and vocal chops sharp enough to perform microsurgery. The arrangements laid down by right-hand man Nelson Riddle also set a standard for pop vocal recordings of the era, attaining a feel that's simultaneouslypunchy and sophisticated. Sinatra wasn't overly concerned with themes or concepts here, just with finding a solid group of songs around which he could wrap his golden tonsils. Classics by the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart and Duke Ellington may seem like song selection no-brainers in retrospect, but it must be remembered that these are the recordings that actually made those songs true classics in the first place. Atom Heart Mother
ATOM HEART MOTHER is a collaboration between Pink Floyd and avant-garde composer Ron Geesin. Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (drums). Additional personnel: John Aldiss Choir (vocals). Recorded at EMI Studios-Abbey Road, London, England. When rock operas by the Kinks and the Who were relatively new and Deep Purple was working with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Pink Floyd entered the 70's with ATOM HEART MOTHER, a symphonic endeavor whose centerpieces are two long compositions divided up into movements. Starting out as a chord sequence written by David Gilmour, the title track became a sprawling masterpiece co-written and arranged by Scottish composer Ron Geesin. Throughout twenty minutes of movements titled "Breast Milky," "FunkyDung" and "Mind Your Throat Please," grandiose brass sections bubble over, otherworldly choruses strike a chord of impending doom and individual Floyd contributions pop up amid all the orchestration. The other sprawling piece, "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast," starts out with the sounds of someone puttering about in his home and occasionally muttering to himself, broken up by either the swirling keyboards of Richard Wright or the dulcet tones of David Gilmour's acoustic guitar. The remaining three tracks are Roger Waters' folky ballad "If," the baroque psychedelic pop of Wright's "Summer '68" and Gilmour's "Fat Old Sun," where the guitarist's singing sounds uncannily like Ray Davies. Milk And Kisses
Cocteau Twins: Elizabeth Fraser (vocals); Robin Guthrie (guitar); Simon Raymonde (bass). Engineers include: Cocteau Twins, Lincoln Fong, Mitsuo Tate. Recorded at Pors Poulhan, Bretagne, Franceand September Sound, London, England. The Cocteau Twins' swansong as a functioning entity, MILK & KISSES was released in 1996, three years after FOUR CALENDAR CAFE. In this period the band had changed record labels for the second time in only a few years, explored their acoustic side on the TWINLIGHTS EP, and even submitted to the trend of remixing tracks on the OTHERNESS EP. With MILK & KISSES' release, and nearly another album's worth of single B-sides, they reclaimed their throne as the biggest name in ethereal pop. Collectors should note that a limited edition of the CD was issued in a very cool-looking magnetically sealed case. The album marks a triumphant return to form, adding warmth to everything, including Elizabeth Fraser's voice, still one of the most beautiful in music. Standouts include "Serpentskirt," which adds more percussion than usual to the Twins' sound, the laid-back groove of "Rilkean Heart," positively echoing with Robin Guthrie's patented guitar effects, and "Eperdu," with rolling sonic waves framing Fraser's shimmering vocals. Wilder [Remastered]
Originally planned as THE GREAT DOMINIONS a full year beforehand, The Teardrop Explodes' sophomore effort only saw light in 1981. By this point, the public's fascination with the band was already on the wane. Not for the last time in his career, Julian Cope was busy fashioning obscurity from a potentially winning position. Against the backdrop of a group falling apart--and his own increasingly acid-fuelled instability--Cope somehow dispatched a minor psychedelic pop classic. WILDER is less densely layered than its predecessor KILIMANJARO, relying all too heavily on string synthesizers for texture and cute electronic rhythmsin a stark overall picture. Why grumble though, when the Turtles-esque "Passionate Friend" and the plainly insane imagery of the brassy "Colours Fly Away" lead the way into more Cope-fried confectionery? The Teardrops' transformation from group to hired hands leaves Cope clutching shakily at the reins. His writing and his voice, though, have never been better--witness "The Fighting Takes Over" or "The Great Dominions." And, if prime influences are difficult to disguise, thank goodness the boy has a great record collection. SKU: 1047806

Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (CBS Records Studio, New York, New York). Well, really, what can you say? Miles Davis's prolific output for Columbia Records may be the single greatest set of recordings one artist made for one label. From his hard-bop-era label debut, 'ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT, to his somewhat controversial 1985 recasting of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" into a meditative, moody gem, Davis constantly pushed the boundaries of jazz. Along the way, he created Gil Evans-arranged masterpieces like SKETCHES OF SPAIN and PORGY AND BESS, the career pinnacle KIND OF BLUE, and jazz-rock trailblazers like IN A SILENT WAY and BITCHES BREW. Arranging the set by theme (standards, blues, originals, moods, and electric) instead of chronology makes it somewhat difficult to chart the progress of Miles' experiments, but it does make each CD a pleasurably coherent listen. While it's impossible for four CDs to feature much beyond the very best of Davis's Columbia years, this set is a handy introduction for newcomers. SKU: 1068130

Opening Moves
Battlefield Band: Jenny Clark (vocals, guitar, cittern, dulcimer, whistle); Duncan MacGillvray (vocals, guitar, Highland pipes, mouth organ, whistle); Pat Kilbride (vocals, guitar, bodhran, cittern); Brian MacNeill (vocals, banjo, bouzouki, cittern, mandolin, fiddle, viola, concertina); Jamie McMenemy (vocals, bouzouki, cittern, guitarra, mandolin, whistle); John Gahagan (concertina, whistle). OPENING MOVES is a fine sampler of the Battlefield Band's earliest material. The original albums from which these songs have been culled--THE BATTLEFIELD BAND (1977), AT THE FRONT (1978), and STAND EASY (1979)--were long available only on vinyl (STAND EASY has since been re-released on CD). While featuring variations in the group's personnel, the compilation retains the Band's top-notch musicianship and sense of musical tradition. The contributions of Jamie McMenemy (cittern, mandolin, whistles, bouzouki and vocals), and Irish guitarist, vocalist, and bodhran player Pat Kilbride are especially notable on story-ballads such as "The Shipyard Apprentice" and "The Lady Leroy." Elsewhere, Scottish reels and Irish jigs are given sprightly, energetic treatments, as on "Silver Spear/Humours of Tulla," and the trio of dance themes that includes "My Wife's a Wanton Wee Thing." Also impressive here (in addition to the musicianship of founders Brian MacNeill andAlan Reid, whose work can be heard on later Battlefield efforts) are John Gahagan's tin whistle playing and Duncan MacGillvray's moving Highland pipes. Taken together, these 17 cuts provide an overview of the group's early oeuvre, showing why they became one of the mainstays of Scotland's progressive folk scene. SKU: 1012296

Best Of Caetano Veloso, The (Sem Lenco Sem Documento)
This title means "Without Handkerchief, Without Document". This Verve collection represents the diversity of Veloso's music, perhaps more so than the Tropicalia-heavy compilation A ARTE DE CAETANO VELOSO. Some of the late '60s classics such as "Soy Loco Por Ti, America" and "Superbacana" are included,as is material from the late '70s and early '80s. This CD travels from psychedelia-tinged samba to bossa nova to Brazilian new wave. The unifying element in all this diversity is the tranquil, conversational style of Caetano Veloso's excellent vocals, which owe a lot to Joao Gilberto. While some the synth-pop material featured here might raise an eyebrow, there are a lot of excellent songs featuring sparser arrangements, which perhaps make better use of Veloso's exceptional vocal ability. WITHOUT HANDKERCHIEF WITHOUT DOCUMENT... is an excellent starting point for anyone interested in the first 10 years or so of Caetano Veloso's music. SKU: 3103152

James Taylor [Remastered]
Personnel includes: James Taylor (vocals, guitar, percussion, hand claps); Richard Hewson (conductor);Mick Wayne (guitar); Skaila Kanga (harp); Don Schinn (electric piano, harpsichord, organ); Freddie Redd (organ); Louis Cennamo, Paul McCartney (bass); Bishop O'Brien (drums, percussion); Peter Asher (tamborine, percussion, hand claps, background vocals); Aeolian String Quartet, Amici String Quartet. Recorded at Trident Studios, London, England from July to October 1968. Includes liner notes by Steve Kolanjian. Though James Taylor wasn't a commercial success until SWEET BABY JAMES made him a star in 1971, one of his finest works is this 1968 debut album. Recorded shortly after Taylor was signed to The Beatles' Apple label by producer Peter Asher, it finds the singer-songwriter brimming with confidence and energy. Featuring elaborate orchestration and even a guest appearance from Paul McCartney, Taylor's debut is more produced than SWEET BABY JAMES. The ornate arrangements give the album a wonderfully late-'60s sound that perfectly complements Taylor's accomplished acoustic guitar work and warm, assured singing. In addition to containing such strong performances as the bluesy lament "Circle Round The Sun" and the concert favorite "Rainy Day Man," the album features the original high-spirited recordings of such Taylor classics as "Carolina In My Mind" and "Something In The Way She Moves," which are far superior to the more subdued versions that Taylor re-recorded (due to legal problems with Apple) for his greatest hits album in 1975. Live At Max's Kansas City (Remastered And Expanded)
Full title: Live At Max's Kansas City: Deluxe Edition. Includes six previously unreleased tracks. Booklet notes include interview excerpts with Doug Yule, Billy Yule, Danny Fields, Brigid Berlin (Polk), Moe Tucker and Jim Carroll. The Velvet Underground: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Doug Yule (vocals, bass guitar); Sterling Morrison (guitar); Billy Yule (drums). Reissue Producers: Bill Inglot; Patrick Milligan; John Hagelston. Liner Note Author: John Hagelston. Recording information: Max's Kansas City, New York, New York (08/23/1970). A far cry from the fervor of the seminalLIVE 1969, this live recording, though it was made only a year later, is the swan song of the Velvet Underground. Velvets fan/friend Brigid Polk brought her home cassette machine to this gig at one of the band's favorite NY haunts to record it for herself. Though it was cleaned up upon its eventuation to album format, it still bears the lo-fi marks of it's origin, adding to the gritty, you-were-there feeling. The band had lost idiosyncratic, minimalist drummer Mo Tucker by this time, and were performing material from what's arguably their least memorable album (LOADED), so there's none of their previous live fireworks to be found here. By this time, it was undisputedly Reed's show, so just think of this as the first great live Lou Reed album. The band is at their most polished here, but the amateur sound quality provides a serendipitously ragged edge to the proceedings. The first half of the album is filled with bracing rockers, mostly from LOADED, while the second contains the band's most affecting ballads, largely from their earlier albums. Get 1969 first, then explore this album's subtler charms. SKU: 6566569

From Tha Roota To Tha Toota [PA]
Field Mob: Boondox Blax, Kalage (rap vocals). Additional personnel includes: Trick Daddy, Cee-Lo, Slimm Calhoun, Mr. Kane, E-Bo (rap vocals); Joi (spoken vocals). Producers include: D. Lakes, Marques Darling, Field Mob, Ole-E, ET3. Boondox Blax and Collage are less Dirty than Country South in FROM THE ROOTA TO THA TOOTA, their sophomore effort, that's heavy in both atmosphere and beats. There's the infectious "Sick of Being Lonely" with its poppy girlie chorus to please R&B fans, but they're more at home on the album-opening "K.A.N." with its chants and breakdown of country manners, giving a shout-out to such quaint Southern customs as spitting when you talk, doo-rags, and green chili beans. It's by no means a jolly hayride on the old welcome wagon though--Field Mob confront the South's dark history of slavery with "Nothing 2 Lose," its "I want to be free" chorus given an immediacy andcontext that transcends mere run-of-the-mill social comment. Serious and light-hearted subject matter alike are given a smooth production sheen by the duo. TOOTA is almost a concept album in the old Stevie Wonder tradition in its design and execution. Its sophistication, wit and intelligence all bode well for Field Mob's future efforts. SKU: 1082434
