Kids Are Alright, The (Original Soundtrack/Remastered)
The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Entwistle (vocals, horns, bass); Keith Moon (vocals, drums); Roger Daltrey (vocals). Recorded between 1965 & 1978. Originally released on MCA (11005). Includes liner notes by Roy Carr. Digitally remastered by Jon Astley (Close To The End). THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT is the double-length soundtrack to the film of the same name, which chronicled the rise of the Who from their early days as the High Numbers to their evolution into the innovative, influential and wildly successful rock band they became. Many of these songs are heretofore-unreleased recordings taken from live performances, a setting in which the Who were at their explosivebest. The record features many of the band's greatest songs, either the original versions of early hits like "I Can See for Miles," "I Can't Explain," and "Magic Bus" or live versions that capture the magic of the originals as well as the excitement of the Who's live act. The band's irreverent exuberance is well-documented here, from their off-the-cuff cheekiness on the Smothers Brothers show (followed by a searing performance of "My Generation" that ends with Keith Moon's erupting drum kit) to their performance of proto rock opera "A Quick One" at the Rolling Stones' Rock & Roll Circus. Another highlight is their incendiary convert rave-up of Mose Allison's "Young Man's Blues." SKU: 1057575

Megatone
Personnel: Richard Wahnfried (keyboards); Michael Garvens, Olduer Madchenchor (vocals); Harald Katzsch (guitar); Axel-Glenn Muller (saxophone); Michael Shrieve, Ulli Schober (drums); Klaus Schulze (programming). The mythical Richard Wahnfried is actually German synth maestro Klaus Schulze operating under his sole alias. The music of his Wahnfried band was usually somewhat more rock-based then the music of Schulze solo, and MEGATONE, a rare title in the Wahnfried catalog, utilizes its fair share of surging synth-rock sequencers, laserlight guitars, and searing electronic drum patterns. There's a total of three, near-epic length, high energy tracks here. "Angry Young Boys" features Harald Katzsch's electrifying guitars perched atop Schulze's skyscraping synth designs, while the long-form piece "RichMeets Max" tangles some awry wah-wah guitar amidst the towering keyboard monoliths and pounding synth-drums. When Schulze's trademark electronic pulsations come in to tear apart the fragmenting rhythms, it's blitzkrieg bop, synth-style. Required headphone listening. SKU: 1030107

Mission, The
Personnel: Ennio Morricone, David Bedford (conductor); The London Philharmonic Orchestra, Barnet Schools Choir, Incantation. Recorded at C.T.S. Studios, London, England. Original score composed by Ennio Morricone. Ennio Morricone is one of the most celebrated composers of modern cinema, largely known as the man who invented what's known as "Spaghetti Western" music, but as his score for THE MISSION bears out, he's a diverse artist capable of much more than twangy guitar and desert soundscapes. Exotic percussion, timeless-sounding choral voices and delicate string and woodwind orchestrations mark Morricone's soundtrack for THE MISSION. One of the most striking qualities of this score, which Morricone conducted in addition to composing and orchestrating, is its spiritual quality, but it'snot the distant spirituality of gothic cathedrals and impersonal icons. Aided by stirring orchestral passages, these pieces touch the listener in a much more tactile, personal way, providing a sensory link between the earthly and the divine. SKU: 1011175

Basie And Zoot
Personnel: Count Basie (piano, organ); Zoot Sims (tenor saxophone); John Heard (bass); Louis Bellson (drums). Recorded at RCA Recording Studio, New York, New York on April 9, 1975. Includes original release liner notes by Benny Green. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). By 1975, Count Basie and Zoot Sims had developed an unerring musical rapport. After working for many years in Basie's big band, Sims had come to embody the spirit of Lester Young and the modern amenities bebop offered. Taking Basie's music to new heights, the tenor man became one of the more pivotal players in a long roster of brilliant musicians who worked under the Count. On BASIE AND ZOOT, we hear the two musicians in a relaxedquartet setting. Basie harks back to his stride roots, ala Fats Waller, on tunes such as "Captain Bligh" and "I Never Knew." Sims excels in this musical environment, alighting in a variety of tone colors on his saxophone, reveling in the dynamic contrast not afforded him in Basie's usual large-band setting. Sims plays particularly moving solos on "Hardav" and "I Surrender, Dear," employing a fluid and smoky sound on his instrument. On the latter, Basie wheezes away quietly at the organ, while Sims soliloquizes over top. SKU: 1016112

Mario
Personnel includes: Mario (vocals); Warryn "Baby Dubb" Campbell (various instruments); John "Jubu" Smith, Arty White, Xavier Marquez (guitar); Deon Kipping, Andre Boophe (keyboards); Rufus Jackson, Neil Stubenhaus (bass); Alicia Keys, Lil' Steve Russell, Mischke (background vocals). Producers include: Warryn Campbell, Gerald Isaac, Alicia Keys, Damon Thomas, Harvey Mason Jr. Recorded at Record Plant and Underlab Studios, Los Angeles, California, Quad Recording, Krucialkeys Studios, The Hit Factory New York, New York. The front cover of young R&B upstart Mario's self-titled debut album tells a great deal of the story; the youngster doesn'tlook old enough to shave, but he's sporting that peach-fuzz moustache for all it's worth. Along those lines, these tracks find the youthful innocence of Mario's pliant voice stepping up to take on adult subjects amid some positively grown-up-sounding arrangements. Overseen in part by the seemingly indefatigable Clive Davis for his own hit-spinning J Records, the album boasts danceable, hook-laden production fully supporting Mario's engaging vocal style. While opening the album with a new, smoothed-out version of Biz Markie's quirky classic "Just a Friend" may be a questionable move, there's no doubting the chart-worthiness of MARIO as a whole. Takin' My Time [Remastered]
Personnel: Bonnie Raitt (vocals, acoustic, electric & bottleneck guitars); John Hall (vocals, electric guitar, Mellotron); Taj Mahal (vocals, harmonica, bass); Freebo (vocals, tuba, bass); Bill Payne (vocals, acoustic & electric piano, organ); Van Dyke Parks (vocals, acoustic piano); Paul Barrere (electric guitar); Lowell George (electric slide guitar); Ernie Watts (soprano saxophone); Oscar Brashear (flugelhorn); George Bohanan (trombone); Anthony Terran, Glenn Ferris, Joel Peskin Martin Krystall, Robert Hardaway, Bud Brisbois (horns); Earl Palmer, Jim Keltner (drums); Sam Clayton (congas); Milt Holland (tambourine, timbales, shakers, claves, tablas). Recorded with help from Taj Mahal and members of Little Feat, TAKIN' MY TIME continued Raitt's mixture of blues standards and contemporary songs. Her trademark bottleneck guitar work fuels the Mississippi Fred McDowell blues medley ("Write Me A FewOf Your Lines/Kokomo Blues"), while she continued to spotlight contemporary songwriters: Jackson Browne ("I Thought I Was A Child"), Eric Kaz ("Cry Like A Rainstorm"), and Randy Newman ("Guilty"). Burning Love
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley, the Sweet Inspirations (vocals); The Imperials Quartet, J.D. Sumner And The Stamps. Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. All tracks have been digitally remastered. While not, strictly speaking, a reissue, this collection brings together Elvis's last Top 10 hit (the title track) with other songs from the early '70s, plus some previously unreleased gems. Ironically, "Burning Love" was never available on a "proper" Elvis album--it was stuck on a budget-priced album in the '70s with some less-than-memorable songs from Elvis's movies. BURNING LOVE is the great early-'70s album that never was. The King is in fine vocal form throughout, still capable of inserting dark, animalistic growls into "Hound Dog" and the previously unissued medley of "Little Sister" and the Beatles' "Get Back." Elvis brings a real intensity to pop standards "For the Good Times" and "It's Impossible." The gem here is "I'm Leavin'," with its unusual melodic construction and haunted, possessed vocal. Elvis was going through a divorce at the time many of these songs were recorded. This isn't Elvis the rocker, though he does rock; this is Elvis the singer, the elder statesman of his craft. Though he was playing Las Vegas regularly, he hadn't totally "goneVegas"--Elvis was still belting it out with soul, and he crooned with conviction. SKU: 1016267

Back To Mine (Compiled By Audio Bullys)
This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Audio Bullys. BACK TO MINE is a series authored by artists who have the cultural cache to get paid for making mixes from their own stacks. The British team of DJs known as Audio Bullys (AKA Tom Dinsdale and Simon Franks) create a cool, eclectic set that is as heavy on vintage pop and rock (the Stranglers) as it is on influential house/electronica (the Prodigy). Here you'll find everything from Madness and the Specials (two of the best 1980s UK ska acts) to the Kinks (whose insanely great "All Day and All of the Night" sounds oddly fitting here) to old-school soul (Bobby Caldwell's truly beautiful mid-tempo serenade "What You Won't Do for Love"). The mix also features smooth dance jams (Corrina Joseph's "Live Your Life with Me") and hard-driving house (Wildchild's "Renegade Master"). Dinsdale and Franks manage to sneak in a track of their own ("All Burnt Out," an exclusive for this album), and, in a set list that includes such slices of pop perfection as the Beach Boys'"God Only Knows," Audio Bullys are in good company. Afterglow
AFTERGLOW is a collection of previously unissued studio recordings. Crowded House includes: Neil Finn (vocals, guitar); Nick Seymour (bass); Paul Hester, Peter Jones, David Hepworth (drums). Producers: Mitchell Froom, Youth, Crowded House. Engineers include: Tchad Blake, Greg Hunter, Chris Corr. Recorded between 1985 & 1994. Includes liner notes by David Hepworth. All tracks have been digitally remastered. When New Zealand's Split Enz broke up in 1985, the Finn brothers took decidedly different paths. Elder brother Tim married actress Greta Scacchi while going the solo route while Neil founded The Mullanes, who eventually became Crowded House. Following its wildly successful 1986 debut, this Kiwi threesome squeezed out nearly a decade's worth of smart guitar pop reminiscent of The Beatles, the Kinks, and Squeeze before calling it quits in 1996. This compilation of 13 refurbished and/or remastered tracks consists of stray B-sides and half an album's worth of unreleased songs originally recorded for 1991's WOODFACE. Early tracks include "Recurring Dream," a chiming, pre-Crowded House number, and the wah-wah guitar-soaked "Left Hand," a loose workout spiked by some rollicking piano. Neil Finn's hand firmly steers the band's creative tiller through seas of love and pathos with inspiration ranging from his wife (the melodically rich "I Love You Dawn"), to his dog (a poignant demo of "Lester"). The only non-Finn song is drummer Paul Hester's zany, TV-obsessed "My Telly's Gone Bung." "Help Is Coming," an impressive slice of dream-pop from the band's last demo session, provides the perfect epilogue for this collection ofmelodic manna. SKU: 1028168

Waiting For The Sun
Also available with THE DOORS on 1 cassette. NOTES: The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals);Robby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (keyboards); John Densmore (drums). Additional personnel: Leroy Vinegar (acoustic bass); Douglas Lubahn, Kerry Magness (electric bass). The Doors' third album showed the band in transition, even as "Hello, I Love You" became the Doors' second number-1 hit. The band's songs set Morrison's poetic and often bizarre lyrical imagery against Krieger's bluesy guitar and the spiraling keyboards of Manzarek. Their chart success, however, alienated them from their original audience, who no longer considered them "underground" enough, while their concert audiences increasingly consisted of teenage girls, drawn by Morrison's sexy performing style. "Hello, I Love You" pushed them firmly into the rock mainstream. SKU: 1041667

Crown Of Creation
This newly remastered 2003 deluxe edition contains bonus tracks. Jefferson Airplane: Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen (vocals, guitar); Grace Slick (vocals); Jack Casady (bass) Spencer Dryden (drums). Additional personnel: Gary Blackman, Charles Cockey (vocals, guitar); David Crosby (guitar);Tim Davis (congas); Bill Goodwin (talking drums); Dan Woody (bongos). Originally released on RCA Victor (4058). Includes liner notes by Jeff Tamarkin and Bill Thompson. CROWN OF CREATION is a rich and varied collection showing off the different talents of the main songwriters. Among the many memorable moments are Grace Slick's beautiful vocal on "Lather," the band's sensitive cover version of David Crosby's "Triad," and Jorma Kaukonen's stunning wah-wah solo on "If You Feel." Add to this the intense lyrics (such as the drug-themed "Greasy Heart"), Marty Balin and Paul Kantner's consistently strong vocals throughout, and Jack Casady's remarkable dexterity on bass. This is most certainly the Airplane's REVOLVER. SKU: 1085640

A budget-priced Soft Cell hits compilation which plays off the title of one of their finest singles, the unapologetically melodramatic "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye," SAY HELLO is a handy introduction to the duo of Marc Almond and Dave Ball for those whose knowledge is limited to "Tainted Love." Shockingly, that definitive tune isn't here--no big loss, as it's on every third "hits of the '80s" compilation--which meansthat SAY HELLO gives listeners the ability to hear the band from a somewhat different perspective. Focusing largely on the band's later albums THE ART OF FALLING APART and THIS LAST NIGHT IN SODOM, this 16-song compilation collects the best of those uneven albums alongside wonderful early singles like "Bedsitter" and "Sex Dwarf." The lack of "Tainted Love" might be a bad thing for casual would-be fans, but SAY HELLO TO SOFT CELL is an interesting alternative to Soft Cell's many singles comps. SKU: 1019330

Kakusei
Personnel includes: DJ Krush (keyboards, programming, turntables). On KAKUSEI, turntable master DJ Krush strikes a wonderful balance between a layered, sonically dense aesthetic and subtle, minimal shading. The combination makes for superb listening, and the wealth of guest artists on board for this outing contribute to the fun. Though the vibe is generally best suited to head-nodding chill-out sessions, there is plenty of challenging detail to keep listeners engaged. The dark, sinuous groove of "Escapee," for example, which features DJ A.S.A., provides just the right amount of syncopated propulsion to frame Krush's mellow scratching. The Rhythm Troops create a cut-and-paste m lange over the vinyl crackle of "Krushed Wall," while "1200"loops strains of jazzy saxophone through swirling harp and a steady drum track. There are no guest MCs here, so there is nothing to distract from the atmospheric, instrumental wash of the record, which upholds Krush's claim as one of the more graceful and enthralling DJs around. Nathan Michael Shawn Wanya [ECD]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which includes regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Boyz II Men: Nathan Morris, Michael McCary, Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris. Producers include: Boyz II Men, She'kspere. NATHAN, MICHAEL, SHAWN, WANYA was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album and "Pass You By" was nominated for Best R&B Performance by a Duoor Group with Vocal. Boyz II Men are the granddaddies of R&B-inflected, pop-friendly, male harmony groups. The countless boy bands that sprang up in their wake all owe a huge debt to the Boyz. Here, they return to reclaim the world they helped to make from the hands of their younger disciples. While there are a few concessions to the times (for instance, the Latin tinge to the "What's the Deal" and the opener "Beautiful Women"), the group sticks mostly to their well-established strengths; soulful, gently funky tunes powered by sweet harmonies and propelled by sensual, gently undulating rhythms. This is makeout music first and foremost. The in-your-face hooks and production of other groups are not for these guys; they'd rather usher you gently into the bedroom and whisper sweet nothings over a quietly insistent backbeat. Salisbury
Personnel: Mick Box (vocals, acoustic guitar, guitar), Ken Hensley (vocals, acoustic & slide guitar, piano, harpsichord, organ, piano, vibraphone); David Byron (vocals); Paul Newton (bass); Keith Baker (drums). Recorded at Landsdowne Studios, London, England in October and November 1970. Includes liner notes by Ken Hensley. With their third release (and second album of 1971), SALISBURY, Uriah Heep issued their first real ambitious work. While their first couple of albums (URIAH HEEP and LOOK AT YOURSELF) were cut from the same monolithic blues-metal cloth as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, it was with SALISBURY that David Byron and co. let their admiration of progressive rock seep in--most notably on the album closing, over 16-minute title track, which featured a 26-piece orchestra. Elsewhere on the album, the songs are shorter and more conventional, such as the acoustic ballad "Lady inBlack" and the jazzy track "The Park." SKU: 5048836

Rooney [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Rooney: Taylor Locke, Robert Carmine (vocals, guitar); Ned Brower (vocals, drums); Louie Stephens (keyboards); Matthew Winter (bass). Producers: Keith Forsey, Brian Reeves, Jimmy Iovine, Adam Kasper. A knack for crafting impeccable power pop must be genetic, because Rooney vocalist/guitarist Robert Carmine serves up tasty bits of ear candy every bit as compelling as those of big brother Jason Schwartzman, who has done the same with his outfit Phantom Planet. Working with Billy Idol producers Keith Forsey and Brian Reeves, Rooney created a hook-packed debut slathered in tight guitar solos, a variety of keyboard textures, and the kind of songs that lodge in your head for extended periods of time. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, this 11-song, self-titled opus pays homage to all the appropriate sources, ranging from the Beach Boys (a harmony-soaked "Blueside") to Split Enz (the synth-flavored, snappy "Simply Because"). With a winsome whine of a vocal style reminiscent of Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, Carmine easily slips into the necessary frame of desperation needed for the yearning "Stay Away" as well as playing the misleading cad who leads an unsuspecting girl on in the New Wave-ish nugget "I'm a Terrible Person." Make roomon the CD shelf for ROONEY, a debut that easily fits in alongside the Sloans, Material Issues, and Redd Krosses of the world. SKU: 1084512

Live Dates Vol.1
This concert album by the long-running British institution is, overall, its best early work, featuring as it does most of the best songs from its first few albums in vastly better sounding versions. This is, clearly, the place to marvel at the band's innovative melange of blues, folk, Yes- style riffs, and endearingly cosmic lyrics, not to mention its centerpiece--the tag team dueling guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. The album's main attraction is the epic "Phoenix," expanded by seven minutes from its studio version and included in two different performances. It's precisely the sort of psychedelic jam that used to really wow them at the Fillmore during the Summer Of Love. Other highlights include a heartfelt version of "Rock 'n' RollWidow," and an impressively arranged take on the Jimmy Reed blues classic "Baby What You Want Me to Do" (misidentified, for some reason, as the Everly Brothers' "You Got Me Runnin'"). Music Of My Mind [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Stevie Wonder (vocals, various instruments, piano); Buzzy Felton (guitar); Art Baron (trombone); Robert Margouleff, Malcolm Cecil (programming). Producers: Stevie Wonder, Robert Morgouleff, Malcolm Cecil. Reissue producer: Harry Weinger. Engineers include: Rick Rowe, Joan DeCola, Robert Margouleff. Recorded at Media Sound and Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York and Crystal Industries, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Tamla (T314). Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves. MUSIC OF MY MIND marked a turning point in Stevie Wonder's career. Having just turned 21, he forged a new contract with Motown, negotiating complete artistic control over his albums (as Marvin Gaye had done for WHAT'S GOIN' ON). He then went to New York City's Electric Lady Studios to record this album, collaborating with synthesizer experts Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff (who also worked on INNERVISIONS and TALKING BOOK). Like other albums to follow, Stevie wrote the vast majority of the material on MUSIC OF MY MIND. Compared to his studio work of three years prior, this music feels worlds away in many senses. That which was grand, conventional and bounteous is replaced with a feel that is at once personal, progressive and downscaled. Performing almost entirely solo, Stevie ties overdubs of keyboards, drums, harmonica and his delectable singing into well-woven audio tapestries that make his head an attractive place to spend time in. Tunes like, "Girl Blue" wrap haunting melodies in piquant chords that echo through the soul. "Superwoman" is a summery Fender-Rhodes groove that segues to an inspired vocal rhapsody--coupled with Buzzy Feiten's guitar work, it's truly riveting. Fast, frolicking clavichord and a sweet, unaffected message make for splendid Sunday morning listening on "Happier Than The Morning Sun." Driven by a dutiful chorus, "Keep On Running" is a merry romp that never seems to stop, and you'll wish it didn't. It'sbeen said of Stevie that "The man is his own instrument"--these recordings burst with this truth. SKU: 1032186

Guitar Man
Bread's GUITAR MAN was not one of its most commercially successful albums--the album's only chart single was the title track--but it's a finely-crafted, well-constructed soft rockalbum which shows the group at its best. Bandleader David Gates first made his name as a session producer and songwriter in mid-'60s L.A.; the Monkees' hard-pop "Saturday's Child" is one of his best and best-known efforts. He clearly learned at the feet of such icons as Brian Wilson and Phil Spector, as even the weaker songs here are sublimely arranged, with crystalline production. The best songs, such as "Welcome to the Music" or "I Didn't Even Know Her Name," are comparable to the best of the Carpenters' singles being released at the same time. SKU: 1034545
