Full title: More, More, More: The Best Of The Andrea True Connection. Personnel includes: Andrea True (vocals); Steve Love (guitar); Enrique Moore (saxophone); James Smart (trumpet); Joe Ferguson, Pete Ecklund (horns); Gregg Diamond (piano, percussion); Jim Gregory (bass); Godfrey Diamond (drums). Engineers: Godfrey Diamond, David Whittman, George Raymond. Recorded at Sundragon Studios, Media Sound Studios, Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York; Federal Records, Kingston, Jamaica. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin. All tracks have been remastered. An authentic classic of its era. True, an ex-porn star, wasn't much of a singer, but she could coo with the best of them, and her previous job experience definitely added an extra little bit offrisson to the package, which, musically speaking, was otherwise pretty standard post-"The Hustle" disco fodder. The double entendre title song was all but ubiquitous throughout 1976, and although True never had a comparably anthemic follow-up, several of the tracks here--particularly "New York, You Got Me Dancing"--were significant club hits. And without her pioneering efforts, we probably wouldn't have had albums by Heather Hunter or Traci Lords. SKU: 4125986

Collection Of Great Dance Songs, A
Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Richard Wright (keyboards); Nick Mason (drums). Additional personnel: Dick Parry (saxophone). Producers: Pink Floyd, Bob Ezrin, David Gilmour, Roger Waters. Engineers include: James Guthrie. Recorded between 1971 and 1981. Digitally remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California). Tongue-in-cheek title aside, this short-but-sweet compilation makes a convincing case for latter-day Pink Floyd as solid students of rock-pop songcraft. Their reputation as space cadets and (in the very early days) acid heads is a million miles away from the expertly crafted, melodic accessibility of the Pink Floyd presented here. Sure, they were sonic explorers, but first and foremost they were a crowd-pleasing rock band (whether they liked it or not). From the longing ode to Syd Barrett "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" to the forceful social commentary of "Sheep" and "Another Brick In The Wall," the band shows off their compositional chops over and above their considerable instrumental facility. As a nod to the present, there's even a remix of the classic "Money," with a slightlymore forceful rhythmic slant added. SKU: 1003634

Plight And Premonition
Personnel: David Sylvian (guitar, piano, harmonium, synthesizer, vibraphone); Holger Czukay (organ, samples); Karl Lippergaus (radio tuning); Jaki Lieberzeit. Recorded at Can Studio, Cologne, West Germany in 1986 & 1987. Though David Sylvian had explored ambient music previously, it was with PLIGHT & PREMONITION and its companion piece, FLUX & MUTABILITY, that he really embraced it. On these albums, both of which were collaborations with Holger Czukay (who, as a part of the band Can, had been charting some of the more avant-garde reaches of music for years), Sylvian began to address the idea of sound as scenery, a notion that subsequently became a defining characteristic of his career. PLIGHT's two expansive instrumental tracks feature only minimal suggestion that humans were even around when they were recorded. The first, "Plight," is subtitled "The Spiralling of Winter Ghosts" and, as the title suggests, seems to exist in a non-corporeal realm of ominous tones where synthesized winds sweep across desolate planes--though there are faint echoes of radio broadcasts and a flute makes a brief appearance. The second track, "Premonition," is an altogether warmer affair, lighting a path out of the deserted wilds--its piano even occasionallyapproaches jazz (but not too closely, mind). Though not for the casual fan, PLIGHT is the kind of record that must be accepted on its own terms, and as such is a rewarding experience. SKU: 1011726

Rubycon [SACD]
Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese (guitar, Mellotron, organ, synthesizer, gong); Peter Baumann (piano, electric piano, prepared piano, organ, synthesizer); Chris Franke (prepared piano, organ, synthesizer, gong). Recorded at The Manor, Shipton On Cherwell, England in January 1975. RUBYCON is an undisputed classic in the vast Tangerine Dream canon, referenced by many of the new electronica generation. But at the time of its creation, Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, and Peter Baumann were themselves young men experimenting with technology. RUBYCONis split into two sections, both of which offer the band's trademark mix of ululating sequencers, ghostly synthetic twilight, and mysterious electronic effects. Part One begins with intergalactic whispers, before coalescing into one of the Dream's most uniquely designed rhythm patterns. Part Two moves the sequencers' BPMs up a notch, matching them with whistling electronics and howling, deep space atmospheres. Truly astonishing stuff, and essential to anyone interested in the advancement of both electronic music and Krautrock in general. SKU: 6476175

Art Of Walking, The
Pere Ubu: Mayo Thompson (vocals, guitar, piano); David Thomas (vocals, organ, drums); Scott Krauss (horn, piano, drums, drum machine); Tony Maimone (piano, bass, organ); Allen Ravenstine (synthesizer). As out-there as Pere Ubu's early singles like "Heart of Darkness" and first couple of albums were, they were still recognizable as rock & roll, however warped. By the time oftheir fourth album, 1981's THE ART OF WALKING, however, all traces of the group's early proto-punk sound had been sublimated into something else entirely. Less sonically aggressive than before, though still challenging ("Lost in Art" is as noisy as anything the band ever did), the 12 songs on THE ART OF WALKING show the growing influence of Pere Ubu's newest member, Mayo Thompson. Thompson, the Texas-bred leader of the Red Krayola, favors difficult but occasionally oddly soothing soundscapes, and his more gentle musical sense displaces a lot of leader David Thomas' sonic aggression, making THE ART OF WALKING simultaneously more inviting and more opaque than any of Ubu's earlier work. It's a challenge, but it's worth it. SKU: 1025983

Recovering The Satellites
Counting Crows: David Bryson (guitar, dobro, tambourine, vocals); Dan Vickrey (guitar, vocals); Adam Duritz (piano, Wurlitzer piano, tambourine, vocals); Charles Gillingham (Hammond B-3 organ, piano, Mellotron, Wurlitzer piano, accordion, harmonica, vocals); Matt Malley (electric & acoustic basses, vocals); Ben Mize (drums, tambourine, light bulbs, Zippo lighter, vocals). Additional personnel: David Immergluck (pedal steel guitar, octave mandolin); Marvin Etzioni (mandolin); Mark Phythian (programming). Three years after AUGUST AND EVERYTHING AFTER paved the Triple A way for the likes of Hootie & The Blowfish, Counting Crows take a more aggressive tack with their sophomore release. As with the debut, the sound takes its cue from singer Adam Duritz's introspective lyrics, but Duritz deals with especially weighty topics this time--the ups and downs of fame are on his mind now--and the band's approach is more slashing than subdued. The yearning "Catapult" opens the record with a quavering guitar and Mellotron, but it gives way to the crashing cymbals, raging guitar and screaming organ of "Angels Of The Silences," a song about rejection. Even the strings on "I'm Not Sleeping" attack with an angry urgency before they are finally consumed by Dan Vickrey's squalling guitar. The Counting Crows showed off their bark on their debut; now they're showing off theirbite. SKU: 1005236

Marquee Moon
Television: Tom Verlaine (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Richard Lloyd (guitar, background vocals); Fred Smith (bass, background vocals); Billy Ficca (drums). Recorded at A & R Studios, New York, New York. Originally released on Elektra (1098). Includes liner notes by Alan Licht. New York's 1970s punk wasmarkedly different to that of Britain. Rather than reject the past, American groups deconstructed its forms and rebuilt them with recourse to the music's strengths. Television's leader, Tom Verlaine, professed admiration for Moby Grape and the folk rock of early Fairport Convention. Elements of the latter appear on this album's title track, which offers a thrilling instrumental break, built upon a modal scale. Verlaine's shimmering guitar style provides the set's focus, but his angular compositions are always enthralling. A sense of brooding mystery envelops the proceedings, and Marquee Moon retains its standing as one of the era's pivotal releases. SKU: 5048555

Straight Outta Compton (NWA 10th Anniversary Tribute Album)
N.W.A.: M.C. Ren, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Yella. Recorded at Audio Achievements, Torrance, California. How do you define five of today's most controversial and successful rap artists? Three letters--N.W.A. (aka Niggas With Attitudes). While hip-hop was dominated by New York-based rappers, N.W.A. took a stand for the West Coast, paving the way for a music's migration. STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON universally established Ice Cube, Eazy-E, M.C. Ren, Dr. Dre and DJ Yella as prime figures in the hip-hop nation, and gave every gangsta with a rhyme a reason to grab the mic. Straight out of Compton, California, N.W.A. delivered real raw hip-hop without any fear of voicing their true opinions, which is just what they did on "Express Yourself," where they emphasized the theme of keepin' it real. Their motto may as well have been what Ice Cube stated on "Gangsta Gangsta": "life ain't nothing but b**ches and money." Yet, the group dissed more than the usual suspects--women, various suckas, whack MCs--going so far as to ridicule the "boys in blue," on "F**k Tha Police," a song so controversial that N.W.A.'s record company received complaints from the FBI and various Policeman's Benevolent Associations. The hard-drivenbeats of STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON showcased Dr. Dre and Yella as producers/DJs on the forefront of a movement that has come to be known as "gangsta funk," and took N.W.A. to the top of the rap game. Rebirth
Personnel includes: Keith Sweat, Royalty, NASDAQ, Ron-Ron, Lola Troy, Lade Bac, Doni. Producers include: Keith Sweat, Roy "Royalty" Hamilton, Fitzgerald Scott, Al E. Cat, Dee Dee Jenkins. When it comes to contemporary male R&B singers, Keith Sweat is the first and last name for many. He offers the same sexual intensity andhip-hop-inflected production as fellow superstar R. Kelly, for example, but without the overly blatant lyrics and reliance on excessive melisma techniques. Rest assured, Sweat is first and foremost a mack daddy love man, whether he's delivering a straight-ahead, forceful message on the opening track "I Want You" or getting silk-sheets romantic on the luxurious slow jam "One on One." Consistently stirring, danceable beats and sharp, catchy synth riffs are the key elements of REBIRTH's production, but Sweat's strong, expressive voice remains quite rightly the center of attention everythime the R&B sensation opens his mouth. Super Black Market Clash [Remastered]
SUPER BLACK MARKET contains 21 tracks including the entire LP BLACK MARKET CLASH (1980), B-sides, remixes & one previously unreleased song. The Clash: Mick Jones, Joe Strummer (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass); Topper Headon (drums, percussion). Producers include: Micky Foote, The Clash, Bill Price, Mikey Dread, Mick Jones. Compilation producer: Kosmo Vinyl. Engineers includes: Bill Price, Mikey Dread, Jeremy Green. Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios). Originally released as a 10-inch EP, BLACK MARKET CLASH effectively bridged the gap between LONDON CALLING and SANDINISTA, both literally and figuratively. While most collections of b-sides and outtakes are of interest only to hardcore fans, this one turned out to be an artistic statement nearly equal to the two classic album that sandwiched it. Halfway between the punk fervor of LONDON CALLING (as on the raging "Cheat") and the reggae/funk experimentation of SANDINISTA (see "Bankrobber" and "Armagideon Time,") the EP stood up as a singular, worthwhile entry in the band's canon. Years later, supplemented by a bounty of bonus cuts, the album was reissued as SUPER BLACK MARKET CLASH. With the added cuts, this recording provides a real insight into the workings of the band, including everything from their first dub workoutsto romantic pop dabblings. It's a bit like reading between the lines of LONDON CALLING and SANDINISTA and discovering an entire world of musical subtext. Essential not only to Clash completists, but anyone interesting in the evolution of punk into something deeper and grander. SKU: 1070818

Schematic
Senser's third studio album (since 1997's 'Asylum') follow's 2000's 'Parallel Change' 'best of'. 'Schematic' sees a return to form in Senser as original members Heitham Al-Sayed, Haggis and John Morgan return to the fold (after time spent in Lodestar). Thus the album owes more to the band's first album 'Stacked Up' than 'Asylum'. Blending punk and metal instrumentation with Arabian rhythms and industrial funk beats, it'shard to compare with any other band. SKU: 6557438

Christmas Gift Of Love, A
Personnel: Barry Manilow (vocals); Robbie Buchanan (arranger, conductor, keyboards); Jorge Calandrelli, Patrick Williams (arranger, conductor); John Pisano, Dean Parks, Ken Barry, Mike Thompson (guitar); Michael Lang (piano); Chuck Berghofer (bass); Gregg Field (drums). Recorded at Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California and The Hop, Studio City, California. What's a nice Jewish boy doing singing about Santa? Never you mind. Barry's been doing it for a while now, and A CHRISTMAS GIFT OF LOVE turns out tobe his second album of holiday music in 12 years. Although this Brooklynite plays it safe with perfectly well done versions of perennials like "Winter Wonderland" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town," he also does a fine job going off the beaten path in seeking out unexpected holiday fare. "White Christmas" may be a best-selling Christmas song that's been done ad nauseum, but few artists perform it as a swinging medley alongside the more obscure Irving Berlin nugget "Happy Holiday." Making like a Semitic Sinatra, Manilow offers arrangements that swing hard thanks to conductors including Patrick Williams and Ray Ellis. Other surprising inclusions are Joni Mitchell's "River" conducted and arranged by the legendary Paul Buckmaster and a lush version of Frank Loesser's "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" that ends up being a nice respite from "Auld Lang Syne." Lessons
Second album from Liverpool metalband. Whilst their 2001 debut 'Majority Of One' was solid, if overly derivative of the US nu-metal sound so prevalent at the time, they have been savvy enough to adapt their style to changing trends, adding emo and old-school elements to their riotous barrage. Produced by Matt Elliss (Groop Dogdrill, Sona Fariq, Grand Theft Audio), it includes the single 'All Fall Down'. SKU: 1085750

Time Out [SACD]
Dave Brubeck Quartet: Dave Brubeck (piano); Paul Desmond (alto saxophone); Eugene Wright (bass); Joe Morello (drums). Recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studios, New York, New York on June 25, July 1 & August 18, 1959. This is part of Columbia/Legacy's Master Sound series. Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from original, first-generation masters utilizing 20-bit technology involving Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system. Second only to Jazz Samba by Stan Getz, as the most commercially successful jazz record of all time (it even contained a single for the pop charts, Paul Desmond's magnificent 'Take Five'), Brubeck brilliantly popularized jazz and offered it as a palatable alternative to Bobby Vee. This album sold by the trunkload and made Brubeck a popular star. Those jazz critics who shunned him for becoming too commercial must eat their words, as this is a monumentalalbum of the finest modern jazz. 'Blue Rondo A La Turk' and 'Kathy's Waltz' demonstrate this man's graceful, nonchalant class. SKU: 6480770

Lady And The Unicorn, The
Personnel: John Renbourn (guitar, sitar); Dave Swarbrick (violin); Don Harper (viola); Tony Roberts, Ray Warleigh (flute); Len Nicholson (concertina); Terry Cox (hand drums, glockenspiel). Includes liner notes by John Renbourn. Throughout the late '60s and early '70s, John Renbourn alternated albums by the Pentangle and duet records with his longtime partner Bert Jansch with small-scale, somewhat experimental solo records. 1971's instrumental THE LADY AND THE UNICORN blends Renbourn's extraordinary six and 12-string acoustic guitars with subtle flute, violin, tasteful sitar, and hand percussion. THE LADY AND THE UNICORN is part early music (the opening "Trotto" and "Saltarello"), part traditional English ballad (the closing medley incorporates "My Johnny Was a Shoemaker" and "Scarborough Fair"), and part jazz and world-tinged Renbourn originals. These eight tunes are flawlessly played, with enough humor and grace that Renbourn's ample chops are never the main attraction. THE LADY AND THE UNICORN should be of interest to Renbourn's usual folk audience and to fans of early and Renaissance-era music. SKU: 1085624

And The Ass Saw The Angel (Readings & Theatre Music)
Full performer name: Nick Cave, Mick Harvey & Ed Clayton-Jones. AND THE ASS SAW THE ANGEL contains Nick Cave's readings from his 1988 book and previously unreleased music from its theatrical adaptation. Personnel: Katy Beale (vocals); Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Ed Clayton-Jones (various instruments). Recorded at The Napier St. Theatre in Melbourne, Australia in October, 1993. This record consists of two distinct parts: the first features Nick Cave reading four excerpts from his William Faulkner-inspired, Southern-gothic novel, AND THE ASS SAW THE ANGEL, while the second is 35 minutes of music commissioned for a stage adaptation of the novel. The excerpts originally appeared on a bonus disc given away with Cave's 1988 album, TENDER PREY. Cave's reading is very careful and deliberate, his voice reverberating and very occasionally verging on singing. Each of the read excerpts features minimal backing: the first with a stately, morose piano and harmonica; the secondsports a sick, barreling barroom piano; and the third and fourth are less music and more the creepy chattering of rasping metal. The theater music is mostly instrumental, the only vocals are provided by Katy Beale on "Cosey's Lullaby" and "Beth's Sleepy River." It varies from the fairly straight-forward, if monumentally grim, intonation of tracks like "Sleepy River Piano" and "Sanctum" to the ambient industrial rattle of "Pa's Traps" and the genuinely distressing "Euchrid on the Run," with a stop along the way at sinister gospel (see "Angels"). A must for Cave fanatics, AND THE ASS SAW THE ANGEL makes perfect accompaniment to reading the novel. SKU: 1043458

Recurring Dream (The Very Best Of Crowded House)
Full title: Recurring Dream: The Very Best Of Crowded House. Crowded House: Mark Hart (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Neil Finn (vocals, guitar); Nick Seymour (vocals, bass). Additional personnel: Paul Hester, Tim Finn. Producers: Neil Finn, Mitchell Froom; Tchad Blake, Youth. Engineers: Paul Kosky, Tchad Blake, Greg Hunter. Includes liner notes by Peter Paphides. When Crowded House said goodbye to the world from the Sydney Opera House in November 1996, 120,000 people turned up to sing along, cry, and wave goodbye to the band that for many produced some the most inspiring music they'd ever heard. Made up of four songs from each of the Crowded House releases plus three additional tracks, RECURRING DREAM is an essential primer for newcomers. The strength of the songwriting, the beauty of the harmonies, the intelligence of the lyrics--all Crowded House givens by this point--are evident on song after song. Old favorites "Don't Dream It's Over," "Better Be Home Soon," and"I Feel Possessed" demonstrate that Neil Finn wrote a great song right from the offing. After working with producer Mitchell Froom for seven years, Crowded House changed direction and hired former Killing Joke member Youth, a move that brought about more of a world-music flavor. The swirling "Pineapple Head," haunting "Private Universe," and "Distant Sun," the group's last single, are three of the beneficiaries of this later partnership. RECURRING DREAM is a must-buy for anyone who ever loved a great pop song. SKU: 1004940
