Undertones [Remastered]
The Undertones: Feargal Sharkey (vocals); Damian O'Neill, John O'Neill (guitar); Mickey Bradley (bass); Billy Doherty (drums). Recorded at Eden Studios, London and Mrs. Simms Shed, Derry, England. Includes liner notes by Paul Lester. Northern Ireland natives The Undertones were formed in 1976 and disbanded seven years later. Though they only made a small impression in their day, they've been appreciated more since their demise. The Undertones wedded sharp hooks to incessant driving music and were something like a more Beatle-ish Ramones. This self-titled album was their first full-length release, and it's chock full of spunky pop nuggets. Songs like "Here Comes the Summer," "Teenage Kicks," "Jimmy Jimmy," and "Family Entertainment" manage to braid angst and hopewith anthemic verve. Feargal Sharkey's unique voice has a crisp and clear tenor, flush with vibrato. While he pushes his singing to its upper limits over the furiously rocking band, his voice retains a purity that harks back to the crooners of decades prior. Unable to make any significant inroads in North America, The Undertones were ultimately undone by commercial frustrations. However, their music has aged far better than that of many of their punk and new-wave era contemporaries. SKU: 1088019

Friends Vol.1 (Music From The TV Series)
Producers include: Kevin S. Bright, Paul Mitchell, The Rembrandts, Don Gehman, Gavin MacKillop. Engineers include: Don Gehman, Gavin MacKillop, Steven Rosenthal. Contains excerpts from the TV show, performed by Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. It may be impossible to listen to "I'll Be There For You," The Rembrandts' upbeat anthem to friendship and the theme from FRIENDS, without thinking of the hit TV show, but you don't have to be a fan to appreciate this soundtrack, which includes previously unreleased material by Toad The Wet Sprocket and Paul Westerberg. There is true balance and variety to the compilation, featuring heavyweights (Lou Reed) and newcomers (Barenaked Ladies) alike. Standouts include The Pretenders' transforming Juice Newton's 1981 hit "Angel Of The Morning" into a love song that can be taken absolutely seriously, Joni Mitchell's extended and deliriously funkyversion of the classic "Big Yellow Taxi," and k.d. lang's smoothly seductive "Sexuality." Themes of frustrated romance and friendship weave a connection between many of the tracks, and short dialogue excerpts from the series are interspersed between songs, often tying in thematically with the music. Kaleidoscope
Personnel includes: Kelis, Terrar, Markita, Marc Dorsey, N.E.R.D., Justin Vince; Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo (various instruments). Recorded at Mastersound Recording Studios and Windmark Recordings, Virginia Beach, Virginia. If the name Kelis doesn't instantly ring a bell, there's a good chance you've still heard her. For one, you may have heard her sweetly defiant voice singing "hey, I said hey, baby I got your money, dont'cha worry" on ODB's obnoxiously catchy hit "I Got Your Money." Then there's the voice all over the radio screaming "I hate you so much right now....aaaargh," which is also Kelis on the lead single from KALEIDOSCOPE, "Caught Out There." Think Mary J.Blige set slightly askew and injected with a touch of Billie Holiday and you can begin to imagine the sound of Kelis on her delightful debut. Her greatest asset is her flexible, multipurpose voice, which shifts from smooth and sultry to a scream with swift efficiency on "Caught Out There," and can range from sweet and sensual on the trip-hoppy "Suspended" to singsong simplicity on "Game Show." Onsongs like "Game Show," she recalls Stevie Wonder in his '70s heyday with her ability to twist notes around hooks with expert precision--every vocal turn has its place and washes over your body as sweet as Ohio Player honey. Kelis introduces herself as a chanteuse to be reckoned with on KALEIDOSCOPE. SKU: 1028463

Night At Birdland Vol.2, A
Art Blakey Quintet: Art Blakey (drums); Lou Donaldson (alto saxophone); Clifford Brown (trumpet); Horace Silver (piano); Curly Russell (bass). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded live at Birdland, New York, New York on February 21, 1954. Originally released on Bluenote (1522). Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder. This is part of Blue Note's Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. Art Blakey's pre-Messengers quintet are in fine form on this second volume ofA NIGHT AT BIRDLAND, a date that Blakey later claimed to be the "first time I enjoyed a record session." Clifford Brown, Lou Donaldson, Curley Russell, original Messengers leader Horace Silver and the powerful Art Blakey present a night of hard-swinging tunes and astounding soloing that defines the state of modern jazz in 1954. Blakey launches into a raucous solo to introduce the sizzling "Wee Dot" as the set's opener. Switching gears, Donaldson is then featured on the classic "If I Had You," a bluesy ballad that gets a lift by the saxophonist's shimmering tone. The heat is back on, though, as a lightning-quick alternate take of Silver's "Quicksilver" will leave you breathless in its wake. A delightful arrangement of Jerome Kern's "The Way You Look Tonight" gives us a hint of the future Messengers sound. The end of the set appropriately features two Bird classics--the exemplary "Now's The Time" and the furious "Confirmation"-- both receiving excellent performances that cap off a memorable night of jazz. Magic City, The
Helium: Mary Timony (vocals, various instruments); Ash Bowie (various instruments); Shawn K.D. (drums). Additional personnel: Mitch Easter (guitar, pedal steel, slide guitar, mandolin, percussion, background vocals); Andrew Emmett (violin); Ken Wilmot (trumpet). While Helium's full-length debut THE DIRT OF LUCK wandered around the deeper crevices and netherworlds of the human soul, its second album THE MAGIC CITY finds Mary Timony's trio exploring an external, mythical world. Wearing its J.R.R. Tolkien influence on its sleeve, THE MAGIC CITY revels in songs of the medieval world; lullabies, romance and dragons and other fanciful, mythical beasts are all food for Helium's bizarre, quasi-Renaissance twist on dissonantguitar-driven indie rock. For the most part on THE MAGIC CITY, Timony's vocals float over songs that meander playfully through dramatically different movements--a particularly stunning example of this being the hypnotic, symphonic eight-minute "The Revolution of Hearts." "Leon's Space Song" whirls around the maypole, setting raging, insistent yet traditional violins against ultra-modern lyrics and a timeless melody. While Timony has an enticing and unique voice, the most spellbinding track of all, the organ driven instrumental "Medieval People," abandons vocals entirely for a dervish-like intensity. SKU: 5066489

Birthday Blues [Remastered]
2 LPs on 1 CD: BIRTHDAY BLUES (1968)/ROSEMARY LANE (1971). This 24-song CD combines 1967's BIRTHDAY BLUES and 1971's ROSEMARY LANE, two of guitarist Bert Jansch's best-loved albums. It is a perfect introduction to one of British folk's leading lights. BIRTHDAY BLUES finds Jansch in a cheerful mood, accompanied by fellow Pentangle band-mates bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox. The remarkably titled "Come Sing Me A Happy Song To Prove We Can All Get Along The Lumpy, Bumpy, Long And Dusty Road" and the sweetly adoring "Miss Heather Rosemary Sewell," a touching love song to Jansch's new wife are among hisfinest moments. ROSEMARY LANE is even better. Jansch works with a broader emotional palette, while recordings of the traditional "Rosemary Lane," "Reynardine," and "Sylvie" return to the guitarist's folk roots. The album also includes a respectful adaptation of Robert Johnson's "Alman." While all of ROSEMARY LANE is divine, two Jansch originals, "Tell Me What Is True Love?" and "M'Lady Nancy," are clearly the highlights. SKU: 1069173

Happy People/U Saved Me
Personnel include: R. Kelly (vocals); Kelly Price (vocals); Donnie Lyle (guitar, bass instrument, background vocals); Rodney East, Kendall Nesbitt (keyboards); Abel Garibaldi, Nathan Wheeler (programming, background vocals); Steve Bearsley, Andy Gallas, Ian Mereness, Jason Mlodzinski (programming); Uncle Life (background vocals). Engineers: Peter Mokran; Abel Garibaldi; Andy Gallas. Recording information: The Chocolate Factory, Chicago, Il; The Studio, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. R. Kelly's music is sometimes hard to separate from his borderline-absurd real-life misadventures, since his alleged misdeeds inevitably inform his recordings. While most artists are influenced by life unfolding around them, few people's private worlds bleed into their creative work in such a public and chaotic way. Heart-on-sleeve emotion has been a hallmark of Kelly's music, and as scandal has surrounded him, so have heartfelt pleas of forgiveness and repentance. His ambitious 2004 double record, HAPPY PEOPLE/U SAVED ME, can be seen as a reaction to/against all this drama. The titles reflect the music within to perfection, the former containing infectious celebrations of life and love, the latter every inch a traditional gospel/soul record. When freeing himself to party on HAPPY PEOPLE, Kelly lets loose a torrent of catchy, groove-laden love songs, most notably the clever "Love Signals." On U SAVED ME, he gains gravity with a solemn grace that transcendshis troubles, making a credible artistic conversion. SKU: 6565197

Bourbonitis Blues
Personnel: Alejandro Escovedo (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Jon Langford (vocals, acoustic guitar); Kelly Hogan (vocals); Chris Stamey (guitar, bass, harmonium); Joe Eddy Hines (acoustic & electric guitars); Bill McCullough (pedal steel); David Perales (violin, background vocals); Brian Standefer (cello); Melissa Swingle (harmonica, background vocals); Glenn Fukunaga, Tom V. Ray (bass); Chris Phillips (drums, percussion); Hector Munoz (drums). Engineers include: Tim Harper, Chris Stamey, Alan Durham. Recorded at Modern Recordings, Chapel Hill, NorthCarolina; Bassett Sound, Austin, Texas; and live at FitzGerald's, Berwyn, Illinois. Alejandro Escovedo has an impressive resume: he was a member of one of the first San Francisco punk bands, the Nuns, and was in one of the early country-punk bands, Rank & File, as well as the under-rated Austin roots-rockers the True Believers. He's related to both Pete Escovedo and Sheila E, and on his WITH THESE HANDS (Rykodisc) album, his backup included Willie Nelson and Jennifer Warnes. On BOURBONITIS BLUES, he mixes evocative originals ("I Was Drunk," "Sacramento & Polk") with well-chosen and unusual covers (John Cale's "Amsterdam," a tantalizingly slow take on the Gun Club's "Sex Beat," Ian Hunter's "Irene Wilde") to show his scope as an artist. Escovedo shows a rare grasp of rock & roll history, and the blues and country roots it sprang from. Moreover, he doesn't merely rehash/recycle the past, he builds on it. His originals are thoughtful and intensely personal but never self-absorbed, and they rock with a controlled passion that recalls the Rolling Stones in their early 1970s prime. Alejandro Escovedo proves that late-night raunch can be put across with sensitivity (the instrumentation includes cello and pedal steel guitar) and quiet, introspective songs can have a sharp, hidden edge. Elvis' Golden Records Vol.2 (50,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong)
Full title: Elvis' Gold Records Vol. 2: 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong. Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); The Jordanaires (background vocals). Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Elvis Presley is rock & roll. It doesn't get simpler than that. Presley was one of the prime architects of the music. As such, he influenced several generations both musically and socially. The songs presented here are among his finest. The urgency in Presley's voice is just one part of the equation. The ease with which he swings through the material tells the rest of the story. Equal parts balladeer and rockabilly king, Elvis played both sides of the fence. He was both tender Love Man and hard-hitting rebel. As this collection proves, his genius was in the way he made itwork. SKU: 1020041

Ask A Woman Who Knows [SACD]
Personnel: Natalie Cole, Diana Krall (vocals); Roy Hargrove (flugelhorn); Joe Sample (piano); Rob Mounsey (keyboards); Russell Malone (guitar); Christian McBride (bass); Lewis Nash (drums); The Clayton-Hamilton Orchestra. ASK A WOMAN WHO KNOWS was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). "Better Than Anything" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. "I'm Glad There Is You" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals. To be honest, there are some stern folk for whom Natalie Cole will never be forgiven for the overdubbed mega-hit duets she recorded with her late father. That would be a shame for them, because they'd miss out on the fact that Cole, as she's spent the years since the aforementioned hits proving, is one damn fine standards singer. She's got it all;a confident, relaxed delivery, an easy sense of swing, and of course unerring range and chops. On ASK A WOMAN WHO KNOWS, her first recording for famed jazz label Verve, she displays her gifts with grace and consistency, whether she's simmering over the Brazilian-tinged "Tell Me All About It" or moving mellifluously through the BAGHDAD CAFE tune "Calling You." Try to forget "Unforgettable" and see what's going down here. SKU: 6589023

Ju Ju
Siouxsie & The Banshees: Siouxsie Sioux (vocals, guitar); John McGeoch (guitar); Steve Severin (bass); Budgie (drums, percussion). Recorded at Surrey Sound, Surrey, England in March & April 1984. Siouxse & the Banshees were never afraid to experiment with other musical styles while using their trademark gothic sound as a starting point, as heard throughout their 1981 release, JUJU. Their previous release, KALEIDOSCOPE, saw the band letting synthesizer seep into their ethereal sound, and on JUJU, experiment with Middle Eastern and psychedelic sounds with a more direct (almost traditional) rock approach. Over the course of most of their recordings, Siouxse & the Banshees either met or topped their previous releases, and JUJU more than delivers on the promise of their previous work, resulting in arguably the group's (and one of goth rock's) finest album ever. Siouxse never lets the intensity dim down on such highlights as the album opening "Spellbound," "Arabian Knights," "Halloween,""Night Shift," and "Voodoo Dolly." Elements of JUJU can be directly sampled in the early work of a band that would bring alternative rock to the masses by the early 90's - devout Siouxse & the Banshees disciples Jane's Addiction. Long Way Around, The (The Acoustic Collection)
Personnel includes: Tom Russell, Dave Alvin, Iris DeMent, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Nanci Griffith, Katy Moffatt. Includes liner notes by Dave Alvin, Nanci Griffith. Even though he has more than a dozen recordings out under his own name, Tom Russell remains the ultimate "songwriter's songwriter." While some in the breed become well-known singing their own songsand others gain some measure of notoriety by providing signature songs for popular singers, Russell has managed to create a body of exemplary work (which dots dozens of singer/songwriters' recordings) to which his name somehow fails to stick. Recorded roughly half in the studio and half "live" at St. Louis' Off Broadway, THE LONG WAY AROUND sets out to correct this slighting. With his gruff, gritty voice accompanied throughout by Andrew Hardin's elegant guitar work, Russell sings and strums his way through 17 of his finest compositions. Heavyweight pals--including Nanci Griffith, Iris Dement, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Katy Moffatt and Dave Alvin--lend voices to all but four of the tunes. John Prine and Steve Goodman fans, in particular, take note. SKU: 1077805

Two Pages
4 Hero: Dego, Mark. Additional personnel includes: Ursula Rucker. Contains 19 tracks. Drum-and-bass has come a long way since its underground birth in the early '90s. It has moved from its white label origins into the realm of downright respectability and mass acceptance, is used as advertising fodder, and is even sometimes dislocated from its purist electronic roots. 4 Hero, like Roni Size, Goldie, and Impulse before them, seek to integrate drum-and-bass with acoustic instrumentation, looking for a way to boldly paint the genre as the music of the future. Epic in scope, TWO PAGES is a sprawling two-disc set that bounces between lush life electronica, with the supple strings and sampled orchestras that abound throughout Disc One, and the galvanized-steel rhythmic tours de force of Disc Two. It's an experiment that pays dividends for the listener--note the alien trajectories of "We Who Are Not as Others," and "Humans," or dance through the majesty of the Pleiades on dreamy sonic confections such as "Wishful Thinking," or "Spirits in Transit," which effortlessly links '60s CTI jazzmen such as Deodato and Stanley Clarke to contemporarydowntempo starshine.
