Nola
Down: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Pepper Keenan, Kirk Windstein (guitar); Todd Strange (bass); Jim Bower (drums). Additional personnel: Lil' Daddy (water pipe, percussion); Ross Karpelman (keyboards); Sid Montz (percussion). Recorded at Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana. All songs written or co-written by Phil Anselmo and Pepper Keenan except "Hail The Leaf," "Pray For The Locust" and "Pillars Of Eternity" (Phil Anselmo). Ever wonder what happens whenfive righteous headbangers pile into a New Orleans garage with a lot of beverages and, as they say, "a mission"? Wonder no more, and look no further than NOLA. As Pepper Keenan (who also plays guitar in Corrosion Of Conformity) tells it, that's how Down was born. He was just off a tour, and hooked up with his pal Philip (Pantera) Anselmo. One thing led to another, and by the time they and the rest of the guys stumbled out of that garage, what was now Down had laid the basic tracks for three of the songs on this incendiary debut, including the opening jam, "Temptation's Wings." "Wings" says just about all there is to say about NOLA. The guitars, cranked up, fuzzed-up and loud, harmonize along a perfect line of distortion one moment, only to chatter away at each other like angry machine-guns the next. Down plays metal pure and simple (Metallica meets Led Zeppelin with many dark, sinister vibes thrown in for good measure) but there's a hint of a New Orleans backbeat propelling the whole wailing construct. But don't get the wrong idea--this is not groovy easy listening. Anselmo does some truly incredible things with his voice--painful, unholy things. Yells become screams become moans become long, keening wails of frustration and pain. The band kicks out the jams in track after track. Down even approximates a kind of hybrid blues/metal on one number, "Underneath Everything," wherein Keenan shows his bayou roots with chunky pieces of guitar work. In the end, that ten seconds of guitar sums up Down. These guys know where they're from and where they're going. And, trust us, they're going there LOUDLY. SKU: 4112661

Too Late To Cry
Personnel: Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle); Russ Barenberg, Lonnie Meeker (guitar); Sam Bush (mandolin); Jerry Douglas (dobro);Tony Trischka, John Schmaltz (banjo); Roy Huskey (bass); Dave Denman, John Cowan (background vocals). Recorded at Cowboy Arms Hotel and Recording Spa, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Tony Trischka. Alison Kraus is one of the most notable figures on the bluegrass and acoustic music scenes. She's managed to bring her folk-influenced style of bluegrass to a wider (read: outside of bluegrass) audience without commercializing or compromising her music (or herself) one bit. Kraus has adapted songs from such unlikely sources as The Beatles and Bad Company to her style. TOO LATE is from earlier in her career (1987), and concentrates on the bluegrass and country scene for the songs. Kraus's voice and fiddle (she won the Illinois State Fiddle Championship when she was 12 years old!) is center-stage. Her voice balances the qualities of innocence, soulfulness and worldly strength. The playing (by such heavy-hitters as Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush and banjo master Tony Trischka) is subdued and superb. A great album for fans of Kraus and traditional bluegrass--newcomers should check out the wonderful collection NOW THAT I"VE FOUND YOU or the beautiful SO LONG, SO WRONG. SKU: 1009268

100% Ginuwine
Personnel includes: Ginuwine, Aaliyah, Elsie Muniz (vocals); Jonathan "Mookie" Morant (guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, background vocals); Bill Pettaway, Jimmy Douglass, Dave Foreman (guitar); "Obie" Morant (flute, soprano saxophone); Shaun Fisher (Fender Rhodes piano); Dante Nolen (bass); Static Of Playa, Louise West, Gina (background vocals). Producers: Timbaland, Jonathan "Mookie" Morant, Teddy Bishop. Engineers include: Senator Jimmy D, Joe Smith, Tommie Hicks, Jr. Recorded at Manhattan Center Studios, New York, New York; Transcontinetal Studios, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Noontime Studios, Inc., Atlanta, Georgia. Returning with a stellar sophomore album, Ginuwine picks up where his 1996 debut album left off. On 100% GINUWINE, he sounds prepared to break out into superstar pop status. Packed with lyrical passion and bomb beats, the soulful singer has found a maturity and depth to his music that is rare for a sophomore album. Produced mostly by Timbaland, 100% GINUWINE is everything a '90s R&B album should be. It contains a balance of ballads and head-nodders, with lyrics you'll want to return to again and again. Among the stand-out tracks are "Final Warning" which features anappearance from the sweet-voiced Aaliyah, "Wait A Minute," a slow-building ballad with beautiful harmonies that could be described as blues-meets-R&B-meets-hip-hop, and "I'm Crying Out." Also, be sure to check out the remake of the classic Michael Jackson song "She's Out Of My Life." This album is a must for Ginuwine fans, and for anyone who appreciates polished, passionate soul music. SKU: 1006370

North
Personnel: Elvis Costello (vocals, piano); Pamela Sklar (alto flute); John Moses (clarinet); Roger Rosenberg (bass clarinet); Dave Mann, Lee Konitz (alto saxophone); Andy Snitzer (tenor saxophone); Lew Soloff (flugelhorn); Bobby Routch, Bob Carlisle (French horn); Conrad Herwig, Dave Tahlor (trombone); Steve Nieve (piano, celeste); Bill Ware (vibraphone); Michael Formanek, Brad Jones (bass); Peter Erskine (drums); Brodsky Quartet. Recorded at Nola Studios, Avatar Studios, New York, New York and Air Studios, London, England. Few artists in pop history have displayed as many different musical sides as Elvis Costello. Over the years, he's ventured in new wave, country, jazz, R&B, and more, and collaborated with everyone from Burt Bacharach to opera star Anne Sofie Von Otter. So those who've followed his twists and turns shouldn't be taken aback by EC following his excellent, groove-based rock album WHEN I WAS CRUEL with a disc full of gently orchestrated piano ballads. This is Costello's debut release on the classical Deutsche Grammaphon label, and though he's ventured into the classical world on such projects as his JULIET LETTERS album with the Brodsky Quartet, this is a different beast. With a muted backing that splits the difference between jazzy combo and modern orchestra, NORTH finds Costello aiming for a modern variation on the classic standard format. Using traditional structures, he spices things up by adding seemingly Schubert-inspired art song-like harmonies and melodic intervals. The lyrics follow a man on the path from romantic disillusionment to the sparksof a new love, mirroring the songwriter's personal journey at the time of the recording. The only question at the end is--where to next? SKU: 1087464

Armageddon
Producers include: Matt Serletic, Kevin Shirley, Bill Ham, Jimmy Iovine, Marc Tanner. Compilation producers: Glen Brunman, John Kalodner, Kathy Nelson. Engineers include: David Thoener, Kevin Shirley, Obie O'Brien, Gary Tole, Shelly Yakus. Original theme composed by Trevor Rabin. "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Song Of The Year, Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and Best Song Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television. While many soundtracks rely on flavor-of-the-month artists to increase sales, the musical companion to the astronomical-disaster film Armageddon leans heavily on the contributions of time-tested "classic" rock artists. Aerosmith is the most dominant presence here, as they offer up no less than four tunes, including the grand power-ballad "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" and aslinky cover of "Come Together." The bearded boys of ZZ Top check in with "La Grange." AOR legends Journey turn up too, trying out new lead singer Steve Augeri, who unsurprisingly sounds rather similar to ex-Journey vocalist Steve Perry. Even Yes is represented, with guitarist Trevor Rabin's instrumental "Theme From Armageddon." Representing the more contemporary end of things are relative newcomers Chantal Kreviazuk and Our Lady Peace. SKU: 4123008

Boy Named Goo, A
Goo Goo Dolls: John Rzeznik (guitar), Robby (bass), George (drums). Producers: Lou Giordano (tracks 1-11); Rob Cavallo, Goo Goo Dolls (tracks 12-13). Engineers: Lou Giordano (tracks 1-11); Jerry Finn (tracks 12-13). Recorded at Beartracks Studios, Suffern, New York and Soundcastle, Los Angeles, California. All songs written byJohn Rzeznik or Goo Goo Dolls except "Disconnected" (Mann/Piranha/Secrist/Sinister) and "Slave Girl" (M. Blood/J. Jakimyszyn). A BOY NAMED GOO shows that the Goo Goo Dolls have soaked up all the elements necessary to make them a great guitar band. The album's title clearly harkens back to Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue" and its narrator's search for the people who named him; but the Goo Goo Dolls aren't taking that path. They already know their past (straight-ahead post-punk), and A BOY NAMED GOO plots out their present. With a smart-alec, bar-band approach reminiscent of the Replacements, the Goo Goo Dolls rage about being "Disconnected"--that "someone pulled the plug." They sound worried on "Long Way Down," realizing that "I don't think I'll make it on my own." "Burnin' Up" offers another key to the Goo Goo Dolls' garage sound by adding a smidgeon of Husker Du (the Bob Mould guitar chimes and Grant Hart's melodic vocal sense are properly reproduced). But it's on the acoustic "Name" that the Dolls' own context emerges. The song complains about "growing up way too fast" in a culture where everything seems borrowed and "re-runs are our history." This is what makes the Goo Goo Dolls admirable. They're thoroughly aware of the repetition within today's guitar-rock, and use only the good pieces to evaluate the present. A BOY NAMED GOO shows a band completely aware of their surroundings, and boasts some great guitars in the process. SKU: 1073164

Star Kitty's Revenge
Personnel includes: Joi (vocals); Keypsiia Gipp (vocals, guitar); Big Gipp (vocals); Raphael Saadiq, Van Hunt (guitar, keyboards, bass); David Whild, John Bingham, Frankie Romano (guitar); Matt Lock (piano); Rand'l (keyboards, bass, drums, programming); Charles Pettaway (keyboards, bass); Sleepy Brown (keyboards, drums, background vocals); Organized Noize (keyboards, drums); Kelvin Wooten (keyboards, background vocals); Dallas Austin, Dinky Bingham (keyboards); Carlos Henderson, Debra Killings (bass); Tom Knight (drums); Jake & The Phatman, Andre Betts (programming); Whild Peach (background vocals). Producers include: Sleepy Brown, Jake & The Phatman, Raphael Saadiq, Andre Betts, Joi. Engineers include: Bernasky Wall, Danny Romero, Carlton Lynn. Joi, aka Star Kitty, spent the '90s releasing critically acclaimed albums like THE PENDULUM VIBE and AMOEBA CLEANSING SYNDROME only to see them sink like stones as labels shut down and poorly planned out marketing strategies fizzled out. Her 2002 outing STAR KITTY'S REVENGE finds the ex-Lucy Pearl singer, young mother and wife of Goodie Mob's Big Gip rebounding to get her freak on amidst slow-rolling grooves, Parliament-Funkadelic-flecked funk and controlled, profanity laced rants. Teaming up with an all-star production team featuring Raphael Saadiq, Dallas Austin and OrganizedNoize's Sleepy Brown, Joi remains a formidable unfettered talent. She cuts loose on a rock-infused cover of Chaka Khan's "I'm A Woman," bobs and weaves through the soulful bounce of "Missing You" and teams with hubby Gip on Bootsy Collins' "Munchies For Your Love" throbbing with a rubbery bassline. Sex serves as a major catalyst whether its the electro-funk ode to oral sex ("Lick") or a jittery blow-off to an unfaithful lover ("Get On"). Elsewhere, Joi pays tribute to her late father and football great Joe Gilliam with the heartfelt ode "Jefferson St. Joe." With STAR KITTY'S REVENGE, Joi can finally take her place at the head of the neo-soul table she helped set. SKU: 1070426

Live And Well
Personnel include: Dolly Parton (vocals); Kent Wells (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar); Richard Dennison (vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboards); Randy Kohrs (vocals, dobro); Gary Davis (acoustic guitar, banjo); Brent Truitt (mandolin); Jimmy Mattingly (fiddle); Jay Weaver (acoustic bass guitar); Steve Turner (drums). Recording information: Celebrity Theater, Dollywood, Tennessee. Recorded in 2002, this live performance by singer Dolly Parton proves that the 56-year-old crooner could still sing with the same vim and vigor as she did in her youth. The concert begins with a blistering version of "Orange Blossom Special," which displays the awesome technical abilities of Parton's bluegrass band. The ensemble then moves through 22 fantastic country tunes, including material from Parton's album HALOS & HORNS, which was new at the time. The crowd goes wild for Parton's famous "9 to 5," from the movie of the same name. She gets the audience cooing along with her on this ditty, and the band gives this pop song a much more traditional "mountain music" feel. Nonetheless, Parton's "A Cappella Medley" is the most endearing selection on this two-disc set. Comprised of four delicate country ballads, including Parton's own "Two Doors Down," this medley is marked by exquisite four-part harmonies and many subtle lyrical nuances. The most peculiar track on LIVE AND WELL is Parton's cover of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," a tuneshe converts into a bluegrass ballad with a light backbeat. Her rendition of this rock classic is insightful, warm, and (as it turns out) quite a crowd-pleaser. SKU: 6574396

All This Time
Personnel: Sting (vocals, guitar, bass); Dominic Miller (guitar); B.J. Cole (pedal steel); Jaques Morelenbaum (cello); Chris Botti (trumpet); Clark Gayton (trombone); Jason Rebello (piano); Kipper (keyboards, programming); Christian McBride (acoustic bass); Manu Katche (drums); Marcos Suzano (percussion); Haoua Abdenacer (djarbuka); Jeff Young, Katreese Barnes, Janice Pendarvis (background vocals). Recorded live at Il Palagio Studios, Italy on September 11, 2001. "All This Time" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. On the day that the second live album of Sting's illustrious solo career (and third if you count the Police's 1995 LIVE set) was to be recorded in Tuscany, Italy, the widely respected singer/songwriter/bassist was beset with one of the world's worst horrors of all-time. The show was to be recorded and broadcast live on the web on September 11, 2001, the day of the World Trade Center tragedy. Instead of canceling it altogether, Sting went on with the recording (although the web broadcast was scrapped except for a single song), resulting in the release of the 15-song ALL THIS TIME, just two short months later. Featured are a trioof Police-era classics inventively re-arranged ("Roxanne," "Don't Stand So Close To Me," and "Every Breath You Take"), plus renditions of such solo selections as the expansive "(If You Love Somebody) Set Them Free," "Brand New Day," "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," and the poignant folk-like ballad "Fields of Gold." Twelve Songs
Personnel: Randy Newman (vocals, piano); Clarence White, Ron Elliott (guitar); Ry Cooder (slide guitar); Al McKibbob, Lyle Ritz (bass); Gene Parsons, Jim Gordon (drums); Milt Holland, Roy Harte (percussion). Newman began his career as a contract songwriter, before embarking on a recording career renowned for sardonic wit. On this, his second album, the singer opted for simple accompaniment, his ragged voice and stylized piano supported largely by a crisp backing group that included Byrds guitarist Clarence White.Superb melodies were matched by an intense lyricism that embraced sometimes disquieting images previously unheard of in rock. Cynicism, bitterness and sexual perversion are unleashed in turn as Newman adopts different roles and personae. His dispassionate delivery demands decisions from the listener, an interaction that is as compulsive as it is disquieting. SKU: 1029149

Genius Of Ray Charles, The
Neither pop nor jazz, once again Charles is hard to categorize even though many of the musicians have strong jazz credentials; Paul Gonsalves, Clark Terry, Zoot Sims and Bob Brookmeyer, for example. The album's strength (in addition to Brother Ray) lies in the choice of classic songs matched with lush orchestration. Ray's soulful voice will break hearts on 'Don't Let TheSun Catch You Cryin'', 'Just For A Thrill' and the ultimate song for hopeless romantics, Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen's starry-eyed 'Come Rain Or Come Shine'. The excellent recording, particularly with Ray's up-front vocals, is the work of Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Bill Schwartau. SKU: 1009456

Very Best Of The Coasters, The
The Coasters include: Carl Gardner, Bobby Nunn, Leon Hughes, Billy Guy, Obie "Young" Jessie, Cornell Gunter, Will "Dub"Jones, Earl "Speedo" Carroll. Producers: Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller. Compilation producer: Gary Stewart. Includes liner notes by Randy Poe, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (Digiprep). This is not only the definitive Coasters greatest hits album, it's also a de facto best of Leiber and Stoller, the two legendary songwriter/producers responsible for all the songs here. Interestingly, Leiber says in the liner notes that his primary songwriting inspiration was radio plays. For example, the sound effects on "Riot in Cell Block #9" were inspired by GANGBUSTERS, a popular crime series of the early '50s. This music is some of the best first-generation rock 'n' roll, with each comedic track brilliantly sung. Anybody who thought early rock was illiterate and a-musical obviously never listened to these songs. SKU: 1000630

Up To Our Hips
The Charlatans: Rob Collins (vocals, piano, organ); Tim Burgess (vocals); Mark Collins (guitar); Martin Blunt (bass); Jon Brookes (drums). Producers: DaveCharles, The Charlatans, Steve Hillage. Recorded at Monnow Valley Studios, Monmouth, South Wales. Suburban Manchester's Charlatans U.K. were originally pegged as Madchester wannabes on the basis of their 1990 hit "The Only One I Know." But this quintet was smart enough not to fall into too readily definable a sub-genre. Charlatans U.K. were therefore able to stick around long after the Madchester sound was a distant memory recalled through an Ecstasy hangover. 1994's UP TO OUR HIPS even finds the group abandoning its trademark: Rob Collins' Jimmy Smith-style Hammond organ grooves. Not by design, mind you-- Collins was in jail on robbery charges during the sessions for this third album. Produced by ex-Gong member Steve Hillage, UP TO OUR HIPS has a laid-back and distinctly American flavor not at all unlike the blues-rock-influenced albums Primal Scream and the Stone Roses were creating at the same time. The style fits the Charlatans much better, however, and Tim Burgess' lazy voice sounds perfectly at home in the downright grooving title track. SKU: 1003073

Creedence Clearwater Revival [Remastered]
Creedence Clearwater Revival: John Fogerty (vocals, guitar); Tom Fogerty (guitar); Stu Cook (bass); Doug Clifford (drums). Includes liner notes by Ben Fong-Torres. Digitally remastered utilizing the 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System. CCR seemed like something of an anomaly on their 1968 debut. They were miles from the mind-expanding flower-power explorations of their California contemporaries. They came across as a gritty, hard-hitting band respectful of their blues, country, and rock & roll roots. John Fogerty's cutting, raspy voice bore echoes of Howlin' Wolf and Little Richard as he delivered lyrics that alternately celebrated and bemoaned a working man's life, much like Merle Haggard and other '60s country artists. That the strong New Orleans swamp-rock flavor seemed so natural (Californian Fogerty's bayou tales were pure flights of fancy) was a testament to the strength of CCR's musical vision. The way they put a respectful but contemporary twist on Dale Hawkins's "Suzie Q" and the chilling "I Put a Spell on You" shows that they knew enough about the past to step confidently into rock & roll's future. 'The Blue Jukebox' is Rea's 19th studio album and follows on from 2003's 'Blue Street'. Rearviewmirror (Greatest Hits 1991-2003) [Digipak]
Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder (vocals); Jeff Ament, Matt Cameron, Mike McCready, Stone Gossard. Producers: Pearl Jam; Brendan O'Brien; Adam Kasper; Brett Eliason; Tchad Blake. Recording information: 1991 - 2003. Unquestionably one of the biggest rock bands of the 1990s, Pearl Jam, in many ways, were the star students of the grunge class. Though they didn't have the defiant, punk attitude of Nirvana nor the we-love-Sabbath metal edge of Soundgarden, the quintet found a huge audience for their relatively straightforward rock, thanks, in large part, to frontman Eddie Vedder's intense persona and distinctive vocals. As the band grew to resent their success, their music became intentionally less accessible (and often more intriguing), and while their peers folded, Pearl Jam found themselves with a smaller, but still loyal, fanbase by the first years of the 21st century. Although this two-disc set draws from the first 12 years of Pearl Jam's history, its focus is clearly on the group's heyday, with more than 20 of the 33 tracks dating from 1991-'95. The collection is cleverly divided into an "up side"and a "down side." The former features PJ's more rocked-out songs (the ominous "Once," the joyous "State of Love and Trust," the scathing "Not for You"), while the latter presents the ensemble's mellower tunes (the jangly "Daughter," the Eastern-tinged "Who Are You," the '50s ballad "Last Kiss"). Though fans may bemoan certain omissions, REARVIEWMIRROR shines the spotlight on underrated songs (the fierce "I Got ID" and the gorgeous "Off He Goes") and offers an excellent overview of this formidable band. Regular Urban Survivors
This 1996 album brought Terrorvision to a new level in terms of fame and musicianship. It was produced by Gil Norton and is far more polished and professionalin sound to the band's two previous outings. A hint of early 90's grunge is still evident on this release but the album is packed with accessible pop-rock. is packed with 'singles' ('Easy', 'Hide The Dead Girl', 'Perseverance' etc). Southernplayalisticadillacmusik
Outkast: Andre, Big Boi. Additional personnel: Craig Love, Edward Stroud (guitar), Jeff Sparks (saxophone), Rico Wade, Patrick Brown, Kenneth Wright (piano, organ), Organized Noize (keyboards, drum programming), Preston Crump, Marq Jefferson, Colin Wolfe (bass), Mr. D.J. (scratches). Background vocals: Patrick "P-Funk" Brown, Debra Killings, Brandon Bennett, Tony "T-Bone" Hightower, Thomas "Cee-Lo" Burton. Recorded at D.A.R.P. Studios, Purple Dragon, Bosstown and Doppler Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. Embodying much of the laid-back characteristics of Southern rock, Southern rap is making its presence known as another flavor on the rap pallette. East Point, Georgia's Outkast is mixing their down-home ease with the smooth stylings of their soul forefathers. It must be a Southern thing; the beats and raps are casual and comfortable, but not to say that the groove isn't there. Much like Isaac Hayes' vocal sleekness, Outkast's Dre (Andre Benjamin) and Big Boi (Antwan Patton) finesse their way through the pumping beats of "Call Of The Wild" to the soulful croonings on their number one single, "Player's Ball," which topped the R&B charts for six weeks. Produced by Organized Noize, an Atlanta-area production team, Outkast's debut simmers with a sense of world-weary restraint. From their choice to use the moniker Outkast, to the difficulties of avoiding oppression and the potential alienation of actually becoming a success, Outkast'sdebut shows definite potential for the Atlanta-area teenagers, and possible further success will bring satisfaction, not alienation. Wedding Album
Personnel: John Lennon (vocals, electric & acoustic guitars); Yoko Ono (vocals); Klaus Voormann (guitar); Hugh McCracken, Nicky Hopkins (piano, chimes). Producers: John Lenon, Yoko Ono, Phil Spector. Reissue producers: Yoko Ono, Rob Stevens. Digitally remastered by George Marino and Rob Stevens at Sterling Sound, New York, New York. The couple's third album in less than a year commemorated their wedding in Gibraltar on March 20, 1969. It was also the final installment of a sort of trilogy of releases which brought avant-garde music further into the mainstream than ever before (excepting "Revolution No. 9" on The Beatles' WHITE ALBUM). Their subsequent releases headed more or less into the realm of traditional song structures. Two long pieces were originally presented as the two sides of a record(which itself came in a box with a photo of a slice of wedding cake and other enclosures). "John & Yoko" finds the couple calling out each other's name with every possible sort of emphasis. "Amsterdam" was recorded during their "Bed-In for Peace" at the Amsterdam Hilton. Recorded directly to cassette, John plays guitar and sings, Yoko sings, media and friends stop by--a true document. Two additional bonus tracks were originally found as B-sides to 45s and a third is a previously unissued version of Yoko's "Don't Worry Kyoko (Mummy's Only Looking For Her Hand In The Snow)."
