A-Sides
Soundgarden: Chris Cornell (vocals, guitar); Kim Thayil (guitar); Ben Shepherd, Hiro Yamamoto (bass); Matt Cameron (drums, percussion). Producers include: Soundgarden, Drew Canulette, Terry Date, Michael Beinhorn. Engineers: Jack Endino, Crew Canulette, Lance Limbocker, Terry Date, Jason Corsaro, Adam Kasper. Includes liner notes by Jonathan Poneman. Ten years after crawling from the muck and mire of the Seattle grunge scene, Soundgarden's farewell compilation hits all the high points of an impressive career. Nirvana may have taken grunge public, but Soundgarden gotthere first. Starting with the grinding of SCREAMING LIFE's "Nothing To Say," A-SIDES demonstrates the band's evolution from muscular musical brutes to a unit whose might was tailored by an innovative use of hooks and melodicism. This collection finds them journeying all over the musical map, utilizing a more percussive assault ("Spoonman"), delving into the depths of psychedelia ("Black Hole Sun"), and even bringing their trademark aggressive style to the decidedly un-rock mandolin on "Ty Cobb," a song the Ramones might have written had they grown up in Kentucky instead of Queens. A-SIDES stands to prove that throughout their career, Soundgarden remained fervently ambitious in their musical endeavours. SKU: 1019832

Men Who Loved Music, The
This reissue of THE MEN WHO LOVED MUSIC includes the REFRESHMENTS EP and "Happy Death Theme," an outtake from the original sessions. The Young Fresh Fellows: Chuck Carroll, Jim Sangster, Tad Hutchison, Scott McCaughey. Additional personnel: Cristy McWilson, Riki Mafune, Em'ly Bishton (vocals); Jed Critter (mandolin, accordion);Richard Peterson (trumpet); Bill Larsen (percussion). Recorded at Egg Studio, Seattle, Washington. Includes liner notes by the Young Fresh Fellows. The third album by Seattle's Young Fresh Fellows is another rollicking good time. Scott McCaughey's songs capture all the aspects of rock & roll then shake and rattle them or tip them over. There are songs about boredom, love, shenanigans, hijinks, and good stupid fun. There's an ode to singer Amy Grant and the delightful "I Got My Mojo Working (And I Thought You'd Like To Know)." The "Young Fresh Fellows Update" is just what it claims to be and "Get Out Of My Cave" is the Fellows' own garage rock classic. The Fellows are a tight combo. Drummer Tad Hutchison's maniacal fills are a special delight. One listen to this album makes it clear why Replacements leader Paul Westerberg had the Fellows play at his wedding. A follow-up EP, REFRESHMENTS, is appended to the CD issue. SKU: 1079379

Elvis 1956
Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar, piano); Scotty Moore, Chet Atkins (guitar); Shorty Long, Marvin Hughes (piano); Bill Black (bass); D.J. Fontana (drums); Ben Speer, Brock Speer (background vocals). The Jordanaires: Gordon Stoker (piano, background vocals); Hugh Jarrett, Neal Matthews, Hoyt Hawkins (background vocals). Compilation producers:Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Sermon. Recorded at RCA Studios, Nashville, Tennessee; RCA Studios, New York, New York and Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California between January 10 and September 3, 1956. Includes liner notes by Alfred Wertheimer. All tracks have been digitally remastered. 1956 was the year that altered American pop music forever. With the exception of Bill Haley's 1955 hit "Rock Around the Clock," the American pop charts of the early 1950s were dominated by the likes of Mitch Miller, Nelson Riddle, and Frank Sinatra. Then came Elvis, and everything changed. From April 7, 1956, when "Heartbreak Hotel" topped the charts, until the end of the year, Elvis held the number one chart position for 25 weeks. Furthermore, the coattail effect of Presley's massive popularity opened the charts to fellow rockers Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, and many others. No innocuous pop star, Presley set off a national debate with his libidinal gyrations and racially ambiguous music (when Presley first broke, many DJs in the segregated South refused to play his music because they didn't believe he was white). ELVIS 56, which collects 22 of Presley's early recordings (including a previously unreleased alternate take of "Heartbreak Hotel"), makes clear what all the fuss was about. Raw, raucous, sexy, and always brilliant, Presley's 1956 recordings are quite simply among the best rock records of all time. SKU: 1003468

Live At Shepperton '74 [Remastered]
Includes liner notes by Robert M. Corich and Mick Box. Digitally remastered by Mike Brown and Robert M. Corich. The majority of Uriah Heep's live albums over the years (LIVE, KING BISCUIT FLOWER HOURPRESENTS, etc.) are from tours the band undertook in the early 70s. And there's a reason why--the band was at the top of their game and they were still fronted by the duo of Mick Box (guitar) and the late David Byron (vocals). The band had just honed their mystical prog-metal to perfection, and LIVE AT SHEPPERTON '74 shows once and for all that the band was at their most consistent on the concert stage during this period. Although the tracklisting duplicates many of the same selections on the aforementioned live releases, you can't go wrong with such Heep staples as "Easy Livin'," plus a rock n' roll medley that contains "Roll Over Beethoven/Blue Suede Shoes/Hound Dog/At the Hop." Dust
Personnel includes: Peter Murphy (vocals, keyboards); Michael Brook (infinite guitar); Hugh Marsh (electric violin); Scott Russel (keyboards, drums); Matthew Burton (bass, programming); Mercan Dede (percussion). Recorded at The Planet, Montreal, Canada. Peter Murphy's sixth solo album (counting 2001's live ALIVE JUST FOR LOVE) finds the singer-songwriter aging gracefully into the role of the elder statesman of goth. As Murphy getsmellower, his vocal debt to Bryan Ferry becomes more pronounced, and the songs on DUST are nearly as mellow as Ferry's suave, post-Roxy Music work. An increased interest in world music informs much of the album, with Middle Eastern and North African melodies and instruments coloring the songs, which on the whole are delicate, meandering things that don't hold to traditional concepts like verse-chorus-verse structure (or choruses at all, much of the time). The arrangements are rich and layered, especially on the complex "Fake Sparkle or Golden Dust" and a superior new version of "Subway" (originally released on 1995's CASCADE) that features a lovely, spidery violin line echoing Murphy's uncharacteristically wistful vocal. Stylistically akin to David Sylvian's increasingly ambient post-Japan work, DUST is dark-hued but not gloomy, and probably the prettiest album of Murphy's career. SKU: 1074294

Live Aus Berlin
Rammstein: Christoph Doom Schneider, Doktor Christian Lorenz, Till Lindemann, Paul Landers, Oliver Riedel, Richard Kruspe. Additonal personnel: Bobo (vocals). Recorded live at Wuhleide Venue, Berlin, Germany on August 22 & 23, 1998. On 1998's LIVE AUS BERLIN, Germany's Rammstein works an extremely vocal hometown crowd into quite a frenzy. The band specializes in brutal, chant-along bombast that's designed to leave people sweaty from fist pumping and hoarse from shouting. Recalling the early days of such bands as Killing Joke and Laibach, Rammstein layers overloaded guitars and throaty Teutonic snarls over a massive, machine-like rhythm section guaranteed to thwart all attempts at crowd control. The bulk of the material is drawn from Rammstein's first album, HERZELEID, though six tracks are drawn from the band's U.S. debut, SEHNSUCHT. The b-side "Wilder Wein" is alsounearthed. Standouts include the Wagnerian swell of "Du Riechst So Gut," a vicious track memorializing a 1988 disaster at Rammstein Air Force Base that has served as the band's theme song. "Bestrafe Mich," "Buck Dich," and "Wollt Ihr das Bett in Flammen Sehen" are especially brutal. Topping it all, there's the (unintentionally?) chilling sound-spectacle of several thousand kids singing along to the chorus of "Weisses Fleisch," a first-person narrative from the point of a rapist. Marshall Mathers LP, The (UK Version) [ECD]
Personnel: Eminem, Snoop, Xzibit, Nate Dogg, Sticky Fingaz (rap vocals); Dido (vocals); Jeff Bass, Steve Berman, Paul "Bunyan" Rosenberg (spoken vocals); Mike Elizondo (guitar, keyboards, bass); Sean Cruise, John Bingham (guitar); Tommy Coster, Jr., Camara Kambon (keyboards); DJ Head (programming). D-12: Kon Artis, Proof, Kuniva, Swifty, Bizarre (rap vocals). Producers include: Dr. Dre, The 45 King, Mel-Man, F.B.T., Eminem. Engineers: Richard "Segal" Huredia, Mike Butler,Aaron Lepley. THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "The Real Slim Shady" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. A Caucasian rapper from Detroit, a Dr. Dre disciple with bright blonde hair--by rights Eminem should be the biggest cheeseball in the hip-hop universe. However, his debut, THE SLIM SHADY LP, contained clever rhymes and even the occasional innovation. His sophomore effort, THE MARSHALL MATHERS LP, is about as subtle as a Detroit Devil's Night and proves Eminem's no fluke, but instead a most unlikely rap visionary. While his horror/shock rap can be repetitive, it's more often hilarious, as he and his Slim Shady character skewer anyone and everyone, notably the MTV-based world that surrounded him after the success of his first record. Few can come up with rhymes as consistently clever as this Motor City madman, and lines which will be repeated as long as this CD is spun. The most startling moment has to be "Stan," featuring haunting, ethereal guest vocals from Dido; an incongruously sublime track, it spins an o henry-meets-'60s teenage-death-song tale of obsessed fan worship gone terribly wrong. Industry And Thrift
Bad Livers: Danny Barnes (banjo); Mark Rubin. Additional personnel: Ames Asbell, Mike Maddux, Leigh Mahoney, Lloyd Maines, Sara Nelson, Fred Remmert, Ben Saffer, Lisa Schneider, Steve Schwelling, Paul "Tex" Sweeny, Jake Zuckerman. Recorded at Cedar Creek Recording, Austin, Texas. Audacious as ever, the Austin-based country rockers Bad Livers continue to perfect their songwriting skills on INDUSTRY AND THRIFT. The Livers have come a long way since their inception as a band, when they covered rock songs (ranging from Iggy Pop to Motorhead) in a hyper-bluegrass style all their own. On their fifth album, the Livers consist of acore duo of bassist Mark Rubin and Danny Barnes on banjo and vocals, surrounded by an extended musical family (including a trademark loudmouth tuba). All manage to have a great time while putting their musical aptitude front and center on songs like "Brand New Hat," with its fast-pickin' intro and warped, slow motion finale. In a musical era with an abundance of insurgent country bands, Bad Livers stand out as authentic rebels, bringing a true punk sensibility to their down-home, twangy music and lyrical gloom and goofiness. Physical Graffiti
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, background vocals); John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards, background vocals); John Bonham (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Ian Stewart (piano). Engineers include: Eddie Kramer, George Chkiantz,Andrew Johns. Recorded at Headley Grave, Hampshire, England; Olympic Studios and Islan, London, England; Stargroves, England between 1972 & 1974. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Led Zeppelin launched its new Swan Song label with the double-LP PHYSICAL GRAFFITI. Recording, which began in December 1973 and concluded in July 1974, took place in numerous locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Ronnie Lane's Mobile Studio and The Rolling Stones' Mobile Studio. Recorded on the run as it were, PHYSICAL GRAFFITI codifies the stylisitc breakthroughs of Led Zeppelin's first five albums. The most well-known of its 15 tracks is "Kashmir," a typically mystical, Eastern-flavored rocker, fleshed out by Page's orchestral flourishes and Bonham's big-foot backbeat. John Paul Jones makes extensive use of electronic keyboards on "In The Light," and Robert Plant's turn on "Black Country Woman" is a sexy, playful nod to the Mississippi Delta. "The Wanton Song," "Trampled Under Foot" and "Houses Of The Holy" reflect Zeppelin's infatuation with funk, but with Zeppelin's distinctly hard-rock interpretation. "Bron-Yr-Aur" is a shimmering solo acoustic guitar excursion by Page, while "Boogie With Stu" is a charming showpiece for pianist Ian Stewart, a Rolling Stones sideman, with Page taking a very Chuck Berryish turn on mandolin. The album was released in the U.S. on February 24, 1975 and in the U.K. on the following day. SKU: 1084122

American Made Music To Strip By (Hellbilly Deluxe Remixed)
Contains remixes of tracks on HELLBILLY DELUXE by various artists including Charlie Clouser, God Lives Underwater, Philip Steir, Rammstein, Chris Vrenna. Personnel: Rob Zombie (vocals); Riggs (guitar); Blasko (bass); Tempesta (drums). Rob Zombie has made a successful career out of bombastic rock music, with huge drums and even huger riffs accompanying scary lyrics, packaged like contemporary versions of '50s B-movies seen through the eyes of high school students. His second album since the dissolution of his band White Zombie is a collection of remixes of tracks from his first, HELLBILLY DELUXE, and on it he moves into the world of dance music--sort of. The remixes here do two primary things: they increase the beatsper minute and they move the vocals further forward in the mix. "Meet the Creeper," remixed by DJ Lethal, is one a few tracks that successfully managed to amp up the B-movie threat--which, given its largely cartoony nature, is no mean feat--into an actual threatening sound. No strangers to cartoony threatening music themselves, Rammstein's take on "Spookshow Baby" is surprisingly effective, adding massive crunch against a more spacious backing. "Demoniod Phenomenon" is a treated to a jackhammer dance beat. While most of the mixes here rearrange the beats without messing with the riffs, when "Return of the Phantom Stranger" does it comes across as a carefully controlled creep-out that is far superior to the original version. Clicks And Cuts Vol.1
Includes liner notes by Sascha Kosch. PCs are the new pawnshop guitars. Artists attack traditional values with their digital armaments, and the uprising bears fruit in the form of exciting, unfamiliar musical idioms. Frankfurt's Mille Plateaux label was first onthe scene in the '90s when techno and process-music experimentation began to merge. With CLICKS_+_CUTS, the label attempts to map the expanded frontier of "21st century minimalism"--that gray area between techno and sound art. Though earmarked with techno's familiar rhythmic and melodic concerns, this exemplary double-disc set bears evidence of opposite intent. C_+_C represents the next step, as artists exercise the powerful deconstructive and reconstructive capabilities of digital sound-designing tools. Internalized turbulence translates cuts by Vladislav Delay, Reinhard Voigt, Skist, Dettinger, Kid606, Ihan, Kit Clayton, Thomas Meinecke, Curd Duca, Goem, and Pole into dance music by default rather than design. Farben, snd, Ultra-Red, Sutekh, Ester Brinkmann, Panacea, Stilluppsteypa, and Pan Sonic cut-and-paste to create purposefully gap-riddled music for cerebral spaces--not mix-ready monotracks for the floor. The pointillism of Frank Bretschneider, Autopoesies, and Alva Noto transfer visual aesthetics into audible canvases, while the luscious, digitally disjointed melodies offered by Neina, All, Jake Mandell, and Dettinger confront ghosts of pop-oriented pasts. Ownerz, The [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contain both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Gang Starr: Guru, DJ Premier. Additional personnel: Jadakiss, Snoop Dogg, Fat Joe, M.O.P., Boy Big, Uncle Reo, Krumbsnatcha, Freddie Foxxx, Big Shug. Recorded at D&D Studios and Avatar Studios, New York, New York. Working as Gang Starr for over 15 years by the time of this release, Guru & DJ Premier more than earned their reputation as one of the most skilled, intelligent hip-hop outfits ever to grab the microphone and work the turntables. With Gang Starr's prior release, the underrated HARD TO EARN, seemingly in the distant past (five years), THE OWNERZ reflects the deliberate nature of the meticulous duo. While Premier earned legendary status as producer on some of rap's most enduring records, he seems to do something extra for his home team, and THE OWNERZ may be his tightest work yet. From the Curtis Mayfield-esque opening of "Sabotage" to the deliriously offbeat feedback and horns of "Who Got Gunz," there's not one false note. Add Guru's patented,steady-but-unassuming swagger, and THE OWNERZ is precisely what the hip-hop world expects from Gang Starr, another classic. SKU: 1084779

Punk Singles Collection, The
A fine addition to the slate of PUNK SINGLES COLLECTION anthologies, this best-of set is an excellent overview of an underrated band despite a couple of omissions. The breathtakingly cynical "The Adverts" is one of the great lost postpunk songs and their legendary self-description "One-Chord Wonders" is an indisputed classic. Guitarist/co-lead vocalist T.V. Smith quickly became a witty chronicler of suburban alienation reminiscent of X-Ray Spex's Poly Styrene, whose characteristic yawp was echoed somewhat by the group's other singer, bassist Gaye Advert. Speedy two-minute classics "Bored Teenagers," "Safety In Numbers" and the still-shocking "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" are all present here. In context, the later singles, made when the band was exploring a proto-Factory Records brand of desperatepostpunk, sound more prophetic than they were given credit for at the time. SKU: 4111744

Raw Like Sushi
Personnel: Neneh Cherry (vocals); Mushroom, Tim Simenon (DJ); Eagle-Eye Cherry (MC); Jeffrey L. Scantelbury (congas); Booga Bear, Wil Malone, Phil Chill (programming, background vocals); Alvin Moody, Mark Saunders, John Sharpe, The Dynamik Duo, Nick Plytas (programming); Claudia Fontain, Sarah Erde, Gordon Dukes, Chandra Armstead, Jock, Sandy McLelland (background vocals). Although the Swedish-born Nenah Cherry-daughter of jazz trumpeter Don, older sister of singer/songwriter Eagle Eye-had spent the early '80s as the singer in the UK avant-jazz-funk outfit Rip Rig and Panic and its offshoot Float Up CP, almost nobody had heard of her in the US before this 1988 solo debut. This made the album's impact all the more impressive, as the powerful mix of hip-hop, jazz and pop seemed to come out of nowhere. The inescapable hit "Buffalo Stance," built on samples from Malcolm McLaren's "Buffalo Gals," a solid bass groove and Cherry'stough-girl vocals, is one of the finest pop singles of the late '80s. The rest of the album, produced by Cherry's husband Tim Simenon's collective Bomb the Bass, ranges from the dreamy "Kisses on the Wind" to hard-edged funk. RAW LIKE SUSHI foreshadows the polyglot influences of Soul II Soul and, later, Massive Attack. SKU: 1017496

Star
702: Meelah, Irish, Misha (vocals). Additional personnel: The Clipse, Pharrell Williams. Producers: The Neptunes, Mario "Yellowman" Winans, She'kspere, Charles Farrar, Dwight "Lil Skrapp" Reynolds. In the late '90s and early '00s, old-school hip-hop sounds were all the rage among R&B groups, but with STAR, 702 uses early '80s synths, Roland 808-approved drum samples, and sparse, jittery block party-style beats to the strict exclusion of anything more modern. In the process, they create a highly distinctive sound quite unlike anything else in hip-hop. Though the album featuresa plethora of talented producers, they seem to have all been watching HOUSE PARTY and listening to LICENSED TO ILL right before they came to the studio, and the album sounds as if it could easily be the product of a single sonic vision. Squiggly electro keyboards and tinny fake cowbells grace virtually every song, forming a slightly surreal backdrop for the smooth, Xscape-esque vocalizing of the ladies of 702. STAR strips hip-hip R&B down to its rhythmic essence, readying the listener for maximum booty-shaking. SKU: 1081863

Now That I've Found You
NOW THAT I'VE FOUND YOU is a collection of new and previously released tracks culled from Alison Krauss's first five albums as well as other artists' albums on which she performed. Personnel includes: Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle, viola); Suzanne Cox (vocals); Ron Block (acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, background vocals); Dan Tyminski (acoustic guitar, background vocals); JerryDouglas (guitar, dobro); Jeff White (guitar, background vocals); Russ Barenberg (guitar); Rob Ickes (dobro); Adam Steffey (mandolin, mandola); Sam Bush, Brent Truitt (mandolin); Tony Furtado, Craig Smith (banjo); Stuart Duncan (fiddle, harp); Pete Wasner (piano); Barry Bales (acoustic & electric bass); Roy Huskey, Jr., Viktor Krauss (acoustic bass); Glen Worf, John Pennell, Todd Phillips, Mark Schatz (bass); Kenny Malone (drums, congas); Harry Stinson, Martin Parker (drums). Producers: Alison Krauss, Union Station, Bil VornDick, Jerry Douglas, Bil VornDick. Engineers: Gary Paczosa, Rich Adler, Bil VornDick. Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee and San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Jim Macnie. "Baby, Now That I've Found You" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Since her Rounder debut in 1987, Alison Krauss has been praised by critics and country music fans alike. Revitalizing traditional styles of country music including bluegrass, the singer and fiddler is the focus of much public attention. Her unique, yet firmly-rooted approach to country music has won her several Grammys. Her 1995 release, NOW THAT I'VE FOUND YOU, showcases her ability to shine in a variety of settings. The title track and "Broadway" find Krauss in a more pop country environment; however even her pop music is unique in its smart harmonic structure, and her ability to avoid pat or stock poetic devices. On "Tonight I'll Be Lonely Too," Krauss and Union Station (her almost constant musical companions) switch to a decidedly bluegrass feel, and on "When God Dips His Pen of Love In My Heart," she plunges into a Southern gospel style with help from the Cox Family. Alison Krauss has the remarkable ability to make these diverse musical directions seem logical and congruent. SKU: 1011808
