In Pieces
Personnel: Garth Brooks (vocals); Chris Leuzinger (acoustic & electric guitars); Ty England (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Mark Casstevens (acoustic guitar); Steve McClure (electric & steel guitars); Bruce Bouton (steel guitar); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Rob Hajacos (fiddle); Terry McMillan (harmonica); Jim Horn (saxophone); Bobby Wood (piano, keyboards); Bobby Emmons (Hammond B-3 organ); Mike Chapman, Roy Huskey, Jr. (bass); Milton Sledge, Mike Palmer (drums, percussion); Ferrell Morris, Sam Bacco (percussion); Helen Darling, Kathy Chiavola, Trisha Yearwood (background vocals). New Grass Revival: Pat Flynn (acoustic guitar); Bela Fleck (banjo); Sam Bush (mandolin, fiddle, background vocals); John Cowan (background vocals). Recorded at Jack's Tracks Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. Digitally remastered by Denny Purcell (Georgetown Masters, Nashville, Tennessee). On his sixth album, IN PIECES, THE superstar of country music is poised once again to break all sales records. Culling from the style of his idol Billy Joel as much as any country influence, Brooks delves further into the mix of high drama and low places of country pop. Country pedigree aside, Brooks is the quintessential pop star. IN PIECES refers to the random way Brooks collected the songs for the album, but the album is in no way a misguided effort. It is a seamless collection. Most artists are lucky if there is one blockbuster on an album; IN PIECES has several: "The Night I Called The Old Man Out," "Standing Outside The Fire," and the 4 1/2 minute epic "Ain't Goin' Down ('Til The Sun Comes Up)." The bluesy "Kickin' And Screamin'" is a left-of-center departure, a la Lyle Lovett. "The Red Strokes" effectively utilizes art as metaphor for romance and serves as one of Brooks' best recordings in a discography including numerous gems. He displays his talent for singing, not posturing or grandstanding. Garth switches to Cajun spicefor "Callin' Baton Rouge" and returns to his roots and spurs for "The Cowboy Song." A murder witnessed by illicit lovers sparks the percussion-heavy "Night Will Only Know." On several songs, Brooks is joined by Trisha Yearwood's harmonies. With all the pieces added together Garth has, once again, created an album of substance. SKU: 6501895

Blood On The Tracks [SACD]
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar); Buddy Cage (steel guitar); Paul Griffin (organ); Tony Brown (bass); Eric Weissberg, Deliverance. Includes liner notes by Pete Hamill. By the mid-'70s, even Dylan's most ardent supporters began taking his artistic decline for granted. Albums like NEW MORNING and PLANET WAVES were fine works, but lacked the visionary spark of his seminal '60s recordings. At 34 he was already being written off as a has-been. That presumption is what made BLOOD ON THE TRACKS such a glorious sucker-punch of a record. One of Dylan's most mournful efforts, this album, which easily ranks among his best, is full of stories about lost love and the struggle for peaceof mind. With a simple, country-flavored backing somewhat akin to NASHVILLE SKYLINE, he recounts shattered love affairs in heart-breaking detail on songs like "Simple Twist Of Fate" and "If You See Her Say Hello." On the vengeful "Idiot Wind" he rails mercilessly against the ignorant and self-obsessed a la "Like A Rolling Stone." The difference here, and the major breakthrough for Dylan, is that by the end of the song, he's lumping himself in with those he excoriates so vehemently. SKU: 1086955

Best Of Ray Charles, The
Personnel: Ray Charles (vocals, alto saxophone, piano); Skeeter Best (guitar); David Newman (alto & tenor saxophone); Billy Mitchell (tenor saxophone); Bennie Crawford, Emmott Dennis (baritone saxophone); Marcus Belgrave, Joseph Bridgewater, John Hunt, Lee Harper (trumpet); Milt Jackson (piano, vibraphone); Edgar Willis, Roosevelt Sheffield, Oscar Pettiford (bass); Milton Turner, William Peeples, Connie Kay, Richie Goldberg (drums). Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason. The title here is misleading, since none of Ray Charles's hits are featured; this is, instead, the best of his work as a jazzman, instrumentals recorded between 1956 and 1958. Labels aside, it's a great album. The opening "Hard Times," for example, is a gorgeous gospel-inflected blues with superb hornarrangements. Charles's version of Horace Silver's "Doodlin'" is an exemplary reading of a bop classic, and the nine-minute take on Leroy Carr's "How Long Blues" seems to stop time in its tracks; it clearly deserves liner note writer Ralph J. Gleason's description as being "one of the great blues instrumental recordings of all time." SKU: 1009182

Christmas Album
Personnel includes: Barbra Streisand (vocals); Marty Paich, Ray Ellis (conductor). Released simultaneously with SIMPLY STREISAND in 1967, this is one of the biggest- selling Christmas albums ever. Aided by producer Ettore Stratta and arranger/conductor Ray Ellis, Barbra adds her unique touch to these Christmas classics (notice her reference to Fanny Brice in a humorous, speedy version of "Jingle Bells"). The rest of the material is presented in a slower, more traditional fashion, but it's all Barbra. Her version of "My Favorite Things" is taken to another level through eloquent and lush phrasing. "White Christmas" is done beautifully, with excellent orchestration and some of Barbra's ownlyrics thrown in for holiday humor. She takes songs you've heard 1000 times before and makes them sound new by making them her own. Ultimately, this record makes an excellent present for a Streisand fan or just a music lover in need of some Christmas fare. SKU: 1046861

New Tattoo (Expanded) [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include the "Hell On High Heels" video. Motley Crue: Vince Neil (vocals); Mick Mars (guitar); Nikki Sixx (bass); Randy Castillo (drums). The unabashed kings of the L.A. glam metal scene of the '80s, Motley Crue has been delivering its brand of rowdy rock & roll for nearly 20 years. After catering somewhat to the dark, brooding rock of the '90s on GENERATION SWINE, the Motley boys return full tilt to attitude driven, testosterone fueled heavy rock. This album picks up where DR. FEELGOOD left off. "Hell on High Heels" featuring a big, anthemic chorus and a catchy guitar lick, is a sexy rocker. "Treat Me Like the Dog I Am" takes a punky turn, while the title track is a ballad about a man who celebrates his love for his woman in true rock & roll fashion--her name on his arm. New drummer Randy Castillo's excellent playing is featured on "First Band on the Moon." The album closes with another in along line of Crue cover tunes, The Tubes' "White Punks on Dope." This killer version fits right in with the sleazy, bratty, party vibe of NEW TATTOO. SKU: 1084760

MTV Unplugged [SACD]
Solo performer: Lauryn Hill (vocals, acoustic guitar). Recorded in July 2001. "Mystery Of Iniquity" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Female Rap Solo Performance. Surviving controversy and delays, former Fugee Lauryn Hill's new material sees its longanticipated release in MTV UNPLUGGED 2.0. In a decidedly gutsy move, Hill follows up her Grammy-sweeping debut emerging as a woman reinvented; a folk soul diva if you will. Older, wiser, and finding comfort in unabashed honesty, Hill offers a performance that plays like both a sermon and a confessional. Her spoken interludes are as compelling as the set's 13 self-penned songs. Sans the "entourage" as she so wryly puts it, Hill shares her new music in pretty much a solo-acoustic format. Though some tracks seem like works in progress, there are many simple, beautiful moments on UNPLUGGED 2.O. "Adam Lives In Theory" speaks to the struggle of men and women to reconcile their imperfections, while the repeating refrain in "Freedom Time" finds Hill feeling liberated from self-deception. Her jazzy fingerpicking sets the perfect mood for the bittersweet ballad "I Find It Hard To Say (Rebel)." In a heart-wrenching section of "I Gotta Find Peace Of Mind," Hill breaks into tears, wearing both her heart and her music on her sleeve. When Hill sings "that old me is left behind" with such raw passion, one can't help but believe her and admire the sentiment. SKU: 1075152

Cradle 2 The Grave [PA]
CRADLE 2 THE GRAVE, which features "music from and inspired by" the action film of the same name, is a tough, well-put-together collection of aggressive East Coast hip-hop that perfectly mirrors the gritty urban setting of the movie. The disc opens with a ferocious duo of tracks featuring DMX (who stars in CRADLE TO THE GRAVE with martial arts master Jet Li). "X Gonna Give It To Ya" is classic DMX: all rough, snarling vocals, rock-hard beats, and plenty of barking. "Go To Sleep," a collaborative effort with Eminem, is a brutal, cinematic gangsta track that may shock those only familiar with the rapper's poppier side. There's also Foxy Brown's "My Life," which chillingly examines hip-hop's blurring of fantasy and reality when it comes to violence, and "What's It All For" by Bazaar Royale, which uses a heavy guitar sample from neo-grunge rockers CKY, recalling Public Enemy's classic early-'90s collaborations with Anthrax. Unlike many soundtrack albums, which appear to be cobbled together simply to make a few extra bucks, CRADLE2 THE GRAVE is an extremely cohesive album and may even emerge as a more substantial work than the film itself. Let The Good Times Roll (The Music Of Louis Jordan)
Full title: Let The Good Times Roll: The Music Of Louis Jordan. Personnel: B.B. King (vocals, guitar); Dr. John (vocals, piano); Russell Malone (guitar); Hank Crawford (alto saxophone); David "Fathead" Newman (tenor saxophone); Marcus Belgrave (trumpet); Neil Larsen (piano, Hammond organ); John Heard (bass); Earl Palmer (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion). Recorded at Cello Recording Studios, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by B.B. King. "Is You Is, Or Is You Ain't (My Baby)" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Though a wry humor permeates many of B.B. King's classic performances, "funny" is not necessarily the first word that comes to mind, making this 1999 collection of rollicking tunes written or popularized by jump-blues vocalist Louis Jordan seem an odd project at first. However, any doubts are vanquished within the first minute of the opening "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens." Wisely avoiding straight imitation of Jordan's unique style, King adapts thesongs to suit himself. This means that "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" gains a sly swagger and a slightly risque undertone, as if the question is purely rhetorical. King was nearly the only member of his blues generation to still be touring and recording actively by the late '90s, and LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL shows this blues master at the top of his game. Best Of The Vanguard Years, The
This is part of Vanguard's Vanguard Sessions Series. Includes liner notes by Todd Everett. Although he's since become best known as a children's folk singer, with album after album of songs for kids to his credit, when Tom Paxton first appeared on the Greenwich Village folk scene in the early '60s, his wry, often very funny, satirical songs were definitely aimed at adults. 2000's BEST OF THE VANGUARD YEARS is a much less comprehensive collection than the title might indicate; the singer/songwriter only recorded three albums for the venerable folk label, 1963's live NEWPORT BROADSIDE, 1977's NEW SONGS FROM THE BRIARPATCH and 1978's HEROES. This is a fine collection regardless. The 1963 tracks, recorded at one of the most legendary editions of the long-running Newport Folk Festival, are early Paxton at his best, from a sterling "Ramblin' Boy" (backed by Pete Seeger on banjo) to the scathing and hilarious talking blues "Talking Pop Art" and"Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation." Of the later tracks, most of which feature the great Steve Goodman on guitar, the celebratory "Did You Hear John Hurt?" and the vituperative "Anita O.J." are the highest of the many high points. Christmas Collection, The (+DVD)
Personnel: Fred Waring & His Pennsylvanians, Nancy Sinatra, The Jimmy Joyce Singers & Orchestra, Tina Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Jr., Bing Crosby. Producers: Sonny Burke; Don Costa; Charles Pignone; Michael Lloyd; Johnny Mandel Compilation Producer: Charles Pignone. Liner Note Author: James Ritz. Arrangers: Dick Reynolds; Nelson Riddle; Jack Halloran; Harry Betts; Gil Grau. The Chairman of the Board breezes his way through THE CHRISTMAS COLLECTION, a well-chosen set of Yuletide classics. This nicely remastered set should summon up memories of Christmas past for many, and is still capable of conjuring a certain kind of comforting holiday magic for younger generations. Sinatra swings through traditional fireside sing-alongs ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "The Twelve Days of Christmas"), often accompanied by his kids, Tina, Nancy, and Frank, Jr., in the days before the latter two became stars in their own right. Sinatra is also joined by his one-time rival in the crooner stakes, Bing Crosby, most notably on the classic "White Christmas," which still has the powerto call up pleasing sentiments of the season. The combination of Sinatra's warm, yet world-weary, voice and the material's lushly appointed arrangements is timeless and irresistible. SKU: 6578097

High 'n' Dry
Def Leppard: Pete Willis, Steve Clark (vocals, guitar); Rick Savage (vocals, bass); Rick Allen (vocals, drums); Joe Elliott (vocals). Recorded at Battery Studios, London, England. Between the time of Def Leppard's 1980 debut, ON THROUGH THE NIGHT, and the band's second album, HIGH 'N' DRY (released one year later), the young group had improved tremendously. An extended world tour had made the band musically tighter, but they'd also become better songwriters--HIGH 'N' DRY contains several tracks that longtime Leppard fans point to as classics. Another major reason for the group's vast improvement was that renowned producer Mutt Lange was involved in the proceedings. While the album wasn't a smash hit, it faired extremely well on the U.S. charts, due to touring and a newly born cable network called MTV, which aired Def Leppard's low-budget clips from HIGH 'N' DRY quite often. Highlights included the power ballad "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" (which would soon become a concert staple for the band), as well as the album-opening anthem "Let It Go," the instrumental "Switch 625," and the rough and rocking title track. HIGH 'N' DRY was reissued in the mid-'80s with a remix of "Bringin' on the Heartbreak" anda previously unreleased track from the album's recording sessions, "Me and My Wine." The late-'90s version deleted these two extra tracks, however. SKU: 1019916
