Love Elvis
Does the world really need another Elvis Presley compilation Well, it does, actually. Unlike some of the more haphazard reissues, LOVE, ELVIS is a collection with a focus, bringing together 24 of the King's best ballads and love songs. It has been done before, but never in such a nice, big, well-chosen chunk. Elvis himself always idolized the cool lounge style of Dean Martin, and while Presley's menacing, sexually charged early rock & roll hits revolutionized popular music, he could also be a seductive crooner with the best of them. LOVE, ELVIS is a stylish, cohesive package that showcases this softer side of the King to full advantage. While some of the later materialfrom the 1970s is no match for timeless classics like "It's Now or Never" and "Love Me Tender," all of the songs fit seamlessly together in an inspired, non-chronological sequence. For a satisfying, romantic Valentine's Day collection, you can't beat LOVE, ELVIS. SKU: 6580548

Shine
Second album by all-female crossover string quartet who so enraged the classical establishment with the release of their 2000 debut 'Born'. Maintaining the worldbeat fusion sound of that album, on 'Shine' they play pieces by Borodin, Albinoni and Piazzolla as well as a cover ofLed Zeppelin's 'Kashmir' and, fittingly, a version of Monty Norman's 'James Bond' theme. These Days
Bon Jovi: Jon Bon Jovi (vocals, harmonica, percussion); Richie Sambora (acoustic & electric guitars, electric sitar, background vocals); David Bryan (keyboards, background vocals); Tico Torres (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Suzie Katayama (accordion); Jerry Vivino (tenor saxophone); Ed Manion (baritone saxophone); Mark Pender (trumpet); Richie LaBamba (trombone); Robbie Buchanan (keyboards, programming); Jerry Cohen (keyboards); Hugh McDonald, Randy Jackson (bass); Tommy Funderburk, Rory Dodd (background vocals). Producers: Peter Collins, Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by George Marino(1998, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Riding a resurgence in popularity with the triple-platinum success of their greatest-hits package CROSSROADS, Bon Jovi returns with THESE DAYS, their first studio album since 1992's KEEP THE FAITH. And it's obvious that the alterna-rock nihilism exhibited by many of their more angst-ridden peers has affected the band's material, giving the blue-collar romanticism of the Jersey rockers a darker vibe. Jon Bon Jovi's characters on THESE DAYS weigh in with more mature and darker conflicts than those explored on previous albums. On "Hey God," a family man on the brink of homelessness cries out for spiritual guidance. The title track goes a step further, describing the sheer hopelessness that goes with not having a place to live. Other characters who've lost their way are either on quests of faith ("Something To Believe In") or have found other altars to worship at ("Something For The Pain"). Along with heightened lyrical development, the group's sound continues to evolve away from the usual pop-metal fare. Jon Bon Jovi occassionally drifts into a raspy voice that is a direct nod to Bruce Springsteen, while David Bryan's keyboard playing veers from the lush orchestration of "Lie To Me" to a simpler harpsichord tone in "If That's What It Takes." Still, Bon Jovi remain a guitar-driven band, and Richie Sambora's muscular style has expanded to include some tasty electric-sitar playing. Though Jon Bon Jovi's sunny optimism is tempered by the murkier subject matter, he still closes THESE DAYS with "Diamond Ring," a gentle matrimonial proposal that shows this Jersey boy is still a romantic at heart. Rare Masters
RARE MASTERS includes rare singles, previously unreleased material, and the long out-of-print FRIENDS soundtrack. Producers: Caleb Quaye, Steve Brown, Gus Dudgeon. Compilation producer: Bill Levinson Includes liner notes by Bernie Taupin and Andrew Sandoval. In addition to the expected b-sides and previously unreleased outtakes, RARE MASTERS is notable for including in its entirely the soundtrack John and Bernie Taupin wrote in the late-'60s for the British movie FRIENDS. The soundtrack songs are early, unpolished John, but among them is the touching buddy song "Friends," (not the Bette Midler-popularized Buzzy Linhart composition) a minor hit in 1971. Among the many surprises elsewhere on RARE MASTERS is "Rock Me When He's Gone," a gospelly number from1971 whose raw, stripped-down production emphasizes a feeling that the much better-known "Border Song" only hinted at. A nearly 9-minute-long alternate version of "Madman Across The Water" is similarly raw, and highlights its bluesy lead guitar in a way that John rarely did in those early days. You also get John blasting through the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" with John Lennon. SKU: 5050170

LSD - Love Sensuality And Devotion (The Greatest Hits)
Full title: LSD: Love Sensuality Devotion: The Greatest Hits. Enigma includes: Michael "Curly MC" Cretu (vocals, various instruments, programming). Among the many artists that helped inject a pan-global flavor into American pop music is Enigma (A.K.A. Michael Cretu), a German artist who brought the sound of chanting Gregorian monks to the charts with "Sadeness (Part I)," a breakout smash from Enigma's 1990 debut MCMXC a.d. The collection LOVESENSUALITYDEVOTION rounds out the rest of the '90s for Enigma with plenty of undulating rhythms and world music hybrids. Dance beats are strung throughout this compilation and pop up on everything from the high-flying ambiance of "T.N.T. For The Brain" to the industrial clang of "Push the Limits" and the chugging "Modern Crusaders." One of Enigma'scharms is the way the most unlikely elements find their way into the songs. A murmuring children's choir lightly breaks through the Asian-flavored "Cross Of Changes," the chant from a South American Indian gives the swirling "Return To Innocence" its distinctive character, and the whispered French and uttering of the title by Cretu's wife Sandra lends "Mea Culpa" a sensual edge. LOVESENSUALITYDEVOTION turns out to be a great drug for both the mind and the soul SKU: 1066753

Abbey Is Blue
Personnel: Abbey Lincoln (vocals); Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham, Tommy Turrentine (trumpet); Julian Prester (trombone); Les Spann (flute, guitar); Wynton Kelly, Phil Wright, Cedar Walton (piano); Sam Jones, Bobby Boswell (bass); Philly Joe Jones, Max Roach (drums). Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York in 1959. Originally released on Riverside (1153). Includes original liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Abbey Lincoln recorded three albums for the Riverside label in the late '50s, the last of which was ABBEY IS BLUE. On four cuts, includingthe album opener, Lincoln is backed by a three-piece horn section and a propulsive rhythm section (including her then-husband, Max Roach). The opening cut features the first vocal presentation of Herbie Mann's "Afro-Blue." Two pieces by Kurt Weill stand nicely alongside numbers by Ellington, Lincoln herself, and other jazz composers of the day. The entire album has the feel of a chamber piece, with its quietly propulsive arrangements and Lincoln's elegant simplicity and emotional depth. ABBEY IS BLUE is yet another highly recommended title from Abbey Lincoln's rich catalog. SKU: 3104185

Trik Turner [PA]
Trik Turner: Doug "Rid" Moore, David Bowers (vocals); Tre (guitar); Steve Faulkner (bass); Sean Garden (drums); DBX (DJ, turntables). Additional personnel: Mike Percy, Michael Tempesta (guitar); Scott Gilman (strings). Recorded at Third Stone Studios, Burbank, California and Chaton Studio, Phoenix, Arizona. This Southwestern band brings a compelling mix of hip-hop, metal, and rapto confound critics and delight the open-minded listener. Its debut album is laced with liberal doses of all three genres, but there's none of the dilettantism that this would usually imply; Trik Turner are no mere Limp Bizkit copyists. Their expertise in each musical form is on display on every song, from the pop metal onslaught of the opener, "Existence," through the angst-ridden, raw lyrical pain of "Father" to the contrasting awe-inspired hip-hop celebration that is "New York Groove." But it's on the more down-home "Friends and Family" that Trik Turner finds its own voice; it's an impressive ensemble performance that swings and has a momentum and sound all its own, as singer Doug "Rid" Moore expresses his philosophy over a simple, infectious groove that's more than a little radio-friendly. Expressing their unique sound and vision, TRIK TURNER is a strong debut that comes close to achieving its aim of uniting hip-hop and metal in an unstoppable combination. SKU: 1081608

Islands [Remastered]
The Band: Richard Manuel, Rick Danko, Robbie Robertson, Garth Hudson, Levon Helm. Additional personnel: Larry Packard (violin); Tom Malone, Jim Gordon, John Simon (horns). Engineers include: Rob Fraboni, Nat Jeffreys, Neil Brody. Originally releasedon Capitol. Includes liner notes by Chris Morris. Digitally remastered by Larry Walsh (August 1990, Capitol Recording Studios). When The Band announced their retirement from touring, it was with the important addendum that they'd continue to record together. In actuality, the only album that subsequently emerged was ISLANDS, which also served to finish out the band's contract with Capitol Records. At the time of its release in 1977, it was received with some dismay by fans anxious for a repeat of the powerful NORTHERN LIGHTS SOUTHERN CROSS of two years previous. With the passing of time having removed the pressures of those expectations, ISLANDS can be heard as an album that, while fragmented, includes some fine gems. The musicianship throughout is never less than compelling. Richard Manuel's vocal on "Georgia On My Mind" is alone worth the price of admission--he sings it as if the thousand other classic versions never existed. SKU: 1058536

Ryde Or Die Vol.1
Known for his blazing tracks on records for Jay-Z and DMX, producer Swizz Beatz assembled a group of new tracks that features such hip-hop all-stars as the Lox, Big Pun, Juvenile, and the aforementioned Jay-Z and DMX. RYDE OR DIE VOL. 1 is jam-packed with energy and hot-to-death beats. There are several outstanding cuts. "Down Bottom" has Juvenile dropping his trademark Southern-style rhymes over Swizz beat, while "Platinum Plus" features Jermaine Dupri, Mase, and Cross. The title cut is a killer with the Lox, DMX, Drag-On, and Eve flippin' over the classic EPMD cut "Headbanger." There are some can't-miss tracks from DMX ("Bug Out," "Some X Shit"), Jay-Z ("Jigga My Nigga"), and Jadakiss from the Lox ("Kiss of Death"). RYDE OR DIE VOL. 1 is what a compilation album shouldbe. In addition, there's the smooth R&B cut "I'm a Ruff Ryder," featuring Parle and producer Dave Hall. Another highlight is "The Hood", a major thug posse cut featuring Drag-On, Beanie Siegal, Mysonne, Inf Red, NuChild, and Jadakiss. SKU: 1019722

Chicago
Music and lyrics written by John Kander and Fred Ebb. Original score composed by Danny Elfman. CHICAGO has a long and varied history; it began life in the '20s as a play about a showgirl named Roxie Hart, the character whose name was used as the titlefor a '40s movie inspired by the show. In the '70s, Broadway composers Kander and Ebb (CABARET, NEW YORK, NEW YORK) wrote the songs for a musical version focusing on the '20s-jazz angle and capitalizing on the murder-and-sex theme, and Bob Fosse fleshed the whole thing out to great success. The late-'90s Broadway revival of the show was even more successful and gave rise to a film version featuring Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, movie stars not known for singing. The film turned out to be a huge hit, and the actors handle their vocal chores admirably, as borne out on this soundtrack disc. Zeta-Jones and Zellweger handle their respective roles of vamp and showgirl well. While Gere will probably never have a solo singing career, his quirky, character-filled singing is perfectly in the style of many male vocalists of the '20s and works just fine. The songs are full of surprise left hooks and catchy refrains, melding early jazz with showtunes in a seamless manner. While the contemporary pop tunes by Anastacia and Queen Latifah tacked onto the end mar one's suspension of disbelief somewhat, this is nevertheless an impressive and entertaining affair. Because It's Christmas
Personnel: Barry Manilow (vocals, piano); Expose, K.T. Oslin (vocals); Eddie Arkin, Russ Freeman (guitar); Jerry Hey (trumpet); Randy Kerber (piano, synthesizer); Gene Estes (vibraphone); John Patitucci (bass); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Alan Estes (percussion). Principally recordedat Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California. Long a master of the vocals genre, Barry Manilow lends his fantastic voice and charm to some holiday favorites on BECAUSE IT'S CHRISTMAS. Straight out of a piano bar on Christmas Eve, Manilow does a classy rendition of "The Christmas Song." The beautiful acoustic guitar of Eddie Arken (who also acts producer and arranger) adds to the touching "The First Noel/When the Meadow Was Bloomin'." There are also a couple of great collaborations, as Barry shares some cute moments on a smooth duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" with K.T. Oslin and swings and harmonizes with Expose (who sound like they're doing their best take on the Andrews Sisters) on "Jingle Bells." And what holiday album would be complete without Barry crooning "White Christmas?" BECAUSE IT'S CHRISTMAS is the perfect album for snuggling up with a loved one in front of the Christmas tree. Even non-Barry fans will warm up to these superbly arranged classics. SKU: 1025896

Living Well Is The Best Revenge
Midtown includes: Tyler Ramm, Heath Saraceno (vocals, guitar); Gabe Saporta (vocals, bass); Rob Hitt (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Mark Trombino (programming); Vinnie Caruana (background vocals). Recorded at Larrabee East, Los Angeles, California and Media Vortex Studios, Burbank, California. The early-'90s pop-punk sound of Green Day (or if you're of a previous generation, thelate-'70s pop-punk sound of the Buzzcocks) will never die. That is, not as long as youngsters like the guys in Midtown continue to crop up and dive headlong into their own personal variant on the style. Like their aformentioned predecesoors, Midtown is long on energy, power chords, and supercharged rhythms, but never at the expense of memorable melodies or lyrics. It's also heartening (and well in keeping with the original punk spirit) to note that the success of LIVING WELL IS THE BEST REVENGE is on the band's own terms, through their own grass-roots label instead of on the coattails of a major corporation. Rock on, lads. SKU: 1072043

Super Trouper
ABBA: Bjorn Ulvaeus (vocals, acoustic guitar); Benny Anderson (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Agnetha Faltskog, Anni Frid Lyngstad (vocals). Additional personnel: Janne Schaffer, Lasse Wellander (guitar); Janne Kling (flute, saxophone); Lars O. Carlsson, Kajtek Wojciechowski (saxophone); Mike Watson, Rutger Gunnarson (bass); Per Lindvall, Ola Brunkert (drums); Ake Sundqvist (percussion). Principally recorded at Polar Music Studios, Stokholm, Sweden in 1980. Includes reissue liner notes by Carl Magnus Palm. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Jon Astley. SUPER TROUPER is ABBA's seventh--and next to last--studio album, andone of their most artistically satisfying. The album's chart-topping singles include the propulsive title track, "Lay All Your Love On Me" and the bittersweet anthem "The Winner Takes It All," which many rank with "Dancing Queen" and "S.O.S." as one of the Swedish foursome's masterpieces. The rest of the album continues the more reflective, adult themes explored by its predecessors, VOULEZ-VOUZ and THE ALBUM. It's difficult to separate the downcast melancholy of songs like "Our Last Summer" and "The Way Old Friends Do"--recorded live at the same performance heard on ABBA LIVE in 1986--from the time period's gossip reports of the breakup of the band's two marriages. Even with such considerations aside, SUPER TROUPER is one of ABBA's finest releases. SKU: 6500280

Introducing Kenny Burrell
Full title: Introducing Kenny Burrell: The First Blue Note Sessions. Contains tracks from the sessions that resulted in INTRODUCING KENNY BURRELL (1956) and KENNY BURRELL VOL. 2 (1957), as well as tracks recorded in a 1958 session that had limited release. Personnel: Kenny Burrell (guitar); Frank Foster, Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Tommy Flanagan, Horace Silver (piano); Paul Chambers, Oscar Pettiford, Doug Watkins (bass); Kenny Clarke, Shadow Wilson, Louis Hayes (drums); Candido Camero (congas). Producer: Alfred Lion. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on February 10 and May 29 & 30, 1956 and Audio-Video Studios, New York, New York on March 12, 1956. Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This is part of Blue Note's Connoisseur Series. Detroit guitarist Kenny Burrell made his recording debut as a leader on Blue Note Records in 1956 at age 24, and forever changed the state of jazz guitar. This epic two-disc collection gathers that first session and two others from the same year. Burrell displays all the full-bodied, soulful swing for which he would become legendary, and a skillful hand at both standards and his own original tunes. These early sessions show a fully formed stylist who would soon take the jazz world by storm with his smooth, clear sound and unlimited creative virtuosity. No one session stands outabove the rest, although Burrell's debut, covering all of Disc One, has a special energy. Disc Two, however, is stimulating in its pairing of Burrell in two sessions with either Frank Foster or Hank Mobley. Kenny Burrell's first recorded chapter is a stellar beginning. SKU: 1038352

Karen Carpenter [Remastered]
Karen Carpenter recorded her only solo album in 1979 and 1980 with members of Billy Joel's backing band. It remained unreleased until 1996. Personnel includes: Karen Carpenter, Peter Cetera (vocals); Michael Brecker (saxophone); Bob James, Greg Phillinganes, Rob Mounsey, Richard Tee (keyboards); Steve Gadd (drums); Airto Moreira (percussion). Recorded at A&R Recording Studios, New York, New York; A&M Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California; Kendun Recorders, Burbank, California between May 2, 1979 and 1980. Includes liner notes by Richard Carpenter and Phil Ramone. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Karen Carpenter's only solo album, recorded in New York in 1979 with producer Phil Ramone but unreleased until 1996, was also the only album she ever recorded with a producer other than her older brother Richard. The difference is immediately obvious. Ramone, whose biggest client was Billy Joel, prefers a looser, more spacious sound than Richard's note-perfect, almost-antiseptic orchestral pop. Not to take anything away from Karen and Richard's endless string of classic pop singles, but it is refreshing to hear Karen's near-perfect voice, a dusky, melancholy alto with bell-like clarity, in a more relaxed and jazz-influenced setting. Arrangements are by jazz greats Bob James and Rod Temperton, and accompaniment includes most of Joel's backing band. The clear highlight, a sensuous yet melancholy version of Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years," is easily amongthe best things Karen Carpenter ever recorded in her short career. Wish You Were Here
Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards, VCS3 syntheszier); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (drums). Additional personnel: Roy Harper (vocals); Dick Parry (saxophone); Venetta Fields, Carlena Williams (background vocals). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England from January-July 1975. Digitally remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California). The breakthrough success of DARK SIDE OF THE MOON made WISH YOU WERE HERE a crucial follow-up in strictly commercial terms. Further pressure came from it being Pink Floyd's first recording for a new label, Columbia. Yet the demands on the band only provided Roger Waters with more fodder for his lyrics, which glanced at the band's roots as well as their new responsibilities. The mechanized throb of a VCS3 synthesizer, fed through a repeat-echo unit, signals the opening bars of "Welcome To The Machine," a diatribe against an industry more concerned with money than creative music-making. "Have A Cigar" further establishes Waters' contempt by bringing in singer Roy Harper to play the role of a"faceless suit," who none-too-innocently asks, "Which one's Pink?" The remaining songs indirectly look back to the first casualty of Pink Floyd's growing fame, the group's founder, Syd Barrett. The 20-minute-plus "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" has its roots in earlier pieces like "Atom Heart Mother Suite" and "Echoes." But rather than just another Floydian soundscape, its lyrics make it a paean to Barrett's genius and a requiem for his subsequent breakdown. The first five of the song's nine movements open the album with sax player Dick Parry wailing as effectively as he did on DARK SIDE. The final four sections, which close the album, form a reprise that starts with the sound of wind and David Gilmour's guitar screaming and crying. The band then settles into a laid-back jam that ends with Richard Wright's billowing synth delicately fading out. The title track deals also with Barrett, as well as the tension the idealist Waters was feeling in battling the greed that surrounded the band's success. The themes of disillusionment planted throughout WISH YOU WERE HERE would eventually sprout full-blown on THE WALL. SKU: 1000933
