Quintessence
Personnel: Phil Woods, Eric Dixon, Jerome Richardson, Frank Wess, Oliver Nelson (saxophone); Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Thad Jones, Jerome Kail, Clyde Reasinger, Joe Newman, Al DeRisi, Snooky Young, Ernie Royal (trumpet); Billy Byers, Curtis Fuller, Melba Liston, Paul Faulise, Rodney Levitt, Thomas Mitchell (trombone); Julius Watkins, James Buffington, Earl Chapin, Ray Alonge (French horn); Harvey Phillips (tuba); Gloria Agostini (harp); Bobby Scott, Patricia Bown (piano); Milt Hinton, George Catlett (bass); Stu Martin, Bill English, James Johnson (drums). Includes liner notes by Lena Horne and Lennie Hayton. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This 1961 big-band album by Quincy Jones displays the range ofhis orchestration abilities. Jones's arranging style is cool, non-intrusive, and quite funky. "Robot Portrait" is a blues that is reminiscent of John Coltrane's acclaimed "Blue Train." Fierce solos are heard on this track by saxophonist Oliver Nelson and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard. "Hard Sock Dance" features another spotlight on Hubbard. After the trumpeter's bold solo, the reeds and muted brass take over, and the dynamic is brought back down to a whisper. Soon, however, Jones's arrangement builds up again until a blast from the trumpet section signals the song's climax. "Invitation" is the only Latin-influenced tune on the album, and this track highlights Jones's arranging skills better than any other. On this piece, Jones uses a mixture of mellow long tones and intense, brassy punctuations. The use of some well-placed harp chords also thickens up the mix rather nicely. Jones assembled a top-notch group for this recording, and his imaginative, colorful arrangements represent a peak in post-war big-band music. SKU: 5067382

Come On Up
Personnel: Brian Culbertson (trumpet, trombone, flute, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, synthesizer, shaker, programming); Ricky Peterson (vocals, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Norman Brown (vocals, guitar); Rahsaan Patterson (vocals); Steve Cole (soprano saxophone, alto & tenor saxophones); Brian Ripp (baritone saxophone); Rick Braun, Jim Culbertson, Jerry Hey, Gary Grant (trumpet); Bill Reichenbach (trombone); Carly Bauer (flute); Stephen Lu, Dave Hutton (keyboards); Paul Jackson, Jr. (acoustic & electric guitars); Michael Thompson (electric guitar, E-bow); Steve Rodby (acoustic bass); Marcus Miller, Richard Patterson, Alex Al (bass); Oscar Seaton, Jr. (cymbals); Lenny Castro (shaker, percussion). Producers: Brian Culbertson, Stephen Lu, Rahsaan Patterson, Scott Steiner. Though young jazzer Brian Culbertson's boyish good looks make it tempting to lump him in with Harry Connick, Jr.-like neophytes Michael Buble and Peter Cincotti, this Illinois native is actually an instrumentalist who's been plying his trade since putting out the self-released debut LONG NIGHT OUT. COME ON UP is Culbertson's seventh album, and for this outing, he goes for a funkier sound that harkens back to a childhood spent cutting his teeth on the sounds of early Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Tower of Power. Weaving an R&B-flavored thread throughout these dozen songs, Culbertson cuts loose with a few special guests including saxophonist Steve Cole, (thebrassy "Say What?"), trumpeter Rick Braun (a sultry "Last Night"), guitarist Norman Brown (the crackling "Come On Up"), and R&B vocalist Rahsaan Patterson (the soulful "Fly High"). The centerpiece of this album turns out to be a sinewy instrumental reading of the Earth, Wind & Fire nugget "Serpentine Fire." Despite the lite-jazz designation this album will undoubtedly get when it hits record store bins, COME ON UP is trimmed with enough funky snap to put it beyond the flavorless stereotype this genre sometimes conjures up. One Fierce Beer Coaster
Bloodhound Gang: Jimmy Pop Ali (vocals, samples); DJ Q-Ball (vocals, DJ); Lupus (guitar, background vocals); Evil Jared (bass, background vocals); Spanky G. Additional personnel: Rob "Vanilla Ice" Van Winkle (vocals). There must be plenty of suburban white boyslike Pennsylvania's Bloodhound Gang who learned about hip-hop from early Beastie Boys records. ONE FIERCE BEER COASTER takes the crude b-boy stance of the Beasties' LICENSED TO ILL, piles on Dust Brothers-like layers of samples, ups the ante with a bunch of Slayer-ish power-chords, and mouths off like a parent's worst nightmare. Tipper Gore watch out: No subject is above the Gang's juvenile slander, not suicide ("Lift Your Head Up High [And Blow Your Brains Out]"), not cunnilingus ("Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny"), nothing. Rapper Jimmy Pop Ali obviously got an "A" in his senior Pop Culture References seminar. Songs are built around '80s dance-floor chants, and the citation list (the Pixies, Chewbacca, Quasimodo) truly never ends. Neither does Ali's sneering attitude or gleeful contempt for every last thing he's sending up. The ultimate joke is having the infamous Vanilla Ice (under his real-life name of Rob van Winkle) drop verses with the gang on "Boom." The group's tongue is so far up its cheek at that point, the only defense is to throw one's hand in the air and go...well, you know. Definitely not for the easily offended. SKU: 1006571

Past Masters Vol.1
PAST MASTERS VOLUME ONE is a compilation of singles, B-sides and other tracks that did not appear on the Beatles' original British albums. The Beatles as a general rule did not include their singles on their albums in the UK. PAST MASTERS VOLUME ONE is available with PAST MASTERS VOLUME TWO on one cassette on Parlophone (91135). The Beatles: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr. Producer: George Martin. Compilation producer: Mark Lewisohn. Recorded between September 4, 1962 and June 14, 1965. Includes liner notes by Mark Lewisohn. Along with its sister volume, PAST MASTERS VOL. 1 gathers singles, oddities and B-sides together and saves the dedicated Beatlemaniac considerable time and money hunting down this uncommon material. Like the "Red Album," VOLUME ONE covers the first half of the Beatles career from 1962 to 1965. Such was the enormous success of the Fab Four's breakout singles "She Loves You" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" that their vocals were recut for German versions ("Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand" and "Sie Liebt Dich" respectively), which were originally slated for the West German market (and are included on this collection) before being released in the States. Always mindful of their influences, the Beatles in their early phase were also notable for their choice of cover songs. Carl Perkins, Larry Williamsand Little Richard were all paid tribute to eventually. While Ringo Starr sang "Matchbox" and John Lennon handled "Slow Down" and "Bad Boy," Paul McCartney channeled Richard Penniman. His take on "Long Tall Sally" induces goosebumps and the influence clearly carried over to "I'm Down." SKU: 1000661

Down Colorful Hill
Red House Painters: Mark Kozelek (vocals, guitar), Gordon Mack (guitar), Jerry Vessel (bass), Anthony Koutsos (drums). The band's debut finds singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek picking up where people like Tim Buckley and NickDrake left off, combining delicate, folky melodies with ambitious song structures and no small amount of alienation. The band also bears a debt to the American Music Club in more ways than one. AMC's Mark Eitzel helped secure the Painters their first record deal with 4AD, and COLORFUL HILL sounds like nothing so much as a scaled-down version of American Music Club's fractured folk-rock desolation. The young Kozelek comes off as the ultimate bedroom poet, agonized over the approach of "24" and getting worked up about troubles with friends and girlfriends ("Lord Kill the Pain," "Michael"). Thanks to the starkness of the arrangements, the uniqueness and consistency of Kozelek's vision, and the winning mix of artifice and honesty, things never get too precious. Uniformly slow tempos and spare, angular guitar work dominate, while Kozelek's humble but pretty voice floats through the songs like a ghost with a chip on its shoulder. SKU: 1014028

Personnel includes: Caetano Veloso (vocals, guitar); Maria Bethania (vocals); Luiz Brasil, Davi Morais, Pedro Sa (guitar); Jacques Morelenbaum (cello); Marcelo Martins (flute, alto & tenor saxophones); Ze Canuto (flute, alto saxophone); Andrea Dias (piccolo); Sueli Farias, Carlos Malta, Ulbaldo Versolato (baritone saxophone); Eduardo Morelenbaum, Lucia Morelenbaum, Christiana Alves (clarinet); Eduardo Mandlebaum (bass clarinet); Walmir Gil, Flavio Melo (flugelhorn); Philip Doyle, Ismael de Oliveira, Antonio Augusto (French horn); Victor Santos, Ulisses de Abreu, Leonardo San Leandro (trombone); William Magalhaes (keyboards); Jota Moraes (vibraphone, xylophone); Jorge Helder, Dadi, Fernando Nunes (bass); Carlinhos Brown (percussion). Producers: Jaques Morelenbaum, Caetano Veloso. Recorded at Estudio AR, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Includes liner notes by Caetano Veloso. LIVRO won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. LIVRO won the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album and was nominated for Album Of The Year. Sometimes called the Bob Dylan of Brazil, Caetano Veloso, along with Gilberto Gil and Os Mutantes, was one of the key figures of the late-'60s tropicalismo movement. He has been astonishingly prolific ever since. To compare him to another famous North American, only Neil Young can match Veloso's combination of output and high quality over the years. His latest stateside release, LIVRO, is no exception to this happy trend. Less aggressively avant-garde than the Arto Lindsay-produced OS ESTRANGEIRO of a decade prior, the mainly acoustic LIVRO represents a return to Veloso's neo-bossa nova roots. Actually, the facile comparison with Dylan breaks down given the fact that, unlike his bossa nova mentors Tom Jobim and poet/lyricist Vinicius de Moraes, the mellifluous-voiced Velsoso was never much of a croaker. Throughout LIVRO, especially on songs like "Voce E Minha" and "Manhata," Veloso simply aims for the sheer beauty of sound and melody. He is too sophisticated and creative to ever sound saccharine in this quest, a danger that his more rock-oriented compatriot Gil never risked. Along with recent albums by Tom Ze and Veloso's sideman Vinicius Cantuaria, the gentle, complex LIVRO is a perfect introduction to modern Brazilian music. SKU: 1017762

Boot And A Shoe, A
Personnel includes: Sam Phillips (vocals); Patrick Warren (piano); T-Bone Burnett (bass); Jim Keltner, Jay Belarose, Carla Azar (drums). Personnel: Sam Phillips (vocals, guitar); Marc Ribot (guitar); Chris Bruce (electric guitar); PatrickWarren (piano, field organ); Mike Elizondo, T-Bone Burnett, David Piltch (bass guitar); Jim Keltner, Jay Belarose, Carla Azar (drums); The Section Quartet. Recording information: Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California; The Village, West Hollywood, California; Stagg Street Studio, Van Nuys, California. Arranger: Patrick Warren. Like its predecessor, FAN DANCE, A BOOT AND A SHOE is a sparse, acoustic-based affair that stands in stark contrast to the extravagant productions of Sam Phillips's great mid-1990s albums. If anything, the sound is even leaner here; the opening track finds Phillips accompanied only by drums and her own acoustic guitar, and her strumming is the center of nearly every arrangement here. Lyrically, she's typically poetic and inscrutable, preferring to sketch out emotional/psychological moods rather than tell linear stories. The melodic and harmonic lilt of Phillips's smart songwriting, the production of husband T-Bone Burnett, and the occasional instrumental flourish (in the form of an electric-guitar backdrop or string quartet) help lift A BOOT AND A SHOE into the realm of the casually transcendent. Water From The Well
The Chieftains: Kevin Conneff (vocals, bodhran); Sean Keane, Martin Fay (fiddle); Derek Bell (harp, piano, harpsichord, tiompan); Matt Malloy (flute); Paddy Moloney (tin whistle, Uilleann pipes, accordion). Altan: Daithi Sproule (guitar); Ciaran Curran (bouzouki); Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, Ciaran Tourish (fiddle); Dermot Byrne (accordion). Kilfenora Ceilidh Band: Michael Kelleher, Tommy Peoples (fiddle); Seamus Hynes (flute); Mary Corocoran (piano). Additional personnel: Laurence Courtney (vocals, banjo); Seamus Begley (vocals, accordion); Frankie Lane, Daith O Se, Ciaran O Gealbhain (vocals); Barney McKenna (banjo); Noel Grady (bouzouki); Ashley MacIsaac, John McHugh, James Murphy, Cora Smyth (fiddle); Janet Harbison, Laoise Kelly, The Belfast Harp Orchestra (harp); Rev. Gary Hastings, Peter Horan, Peter Molloy (flute); Dave Munnelly (accordion); Eoin O Beaglaoich (concertina). WATER FROM THE WELL was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. On 1999's TEARS OF STONE, the Chieftains' prior effort, the venerable Irish institution collaborated (surprisingly successfully) with a number ofpop performers, some of whom (Bonnie Raitt, Natalie Merchant, Joan Osborne) had little or no discernible connection with traditional Irish music (apart from enjoying it, of course). On the aptly titled WATER FROM THE WELL, the Chieftains return to more authentic Irish turf, and the results, unsurprisingly, are gorgeous; nobody plays this music more ravishingly. About a third of the album is sung (Frankie Lane--no, not the "Rawhide" guy--guests on the jaunty "Jack of All Trades"), but the strictly instrumental numbers are often the most impressive, with Chieftain Derek Bell's harpsichord lending astonishing orchestral textures on "Lots of Drops of Brandy," the Belfast Harp Orchestra fleshing out the seraphically lovely "Planxty George Brabazon," and Dubliner (and almost Chieftain) Barney McKenna adding piquant banjo on "Within a Mile of Dublin." More A Legend Than A Band
The Flatlanders: Jimmie Dale Gilmore (vocals, guitar); Joe Ely (vocals, harmonica, dobro, guitar); ; Butch Hancock (guitar, background vocals); Tony Pearson (mandolin); Tommy Hancock (fiddle); Syl Rice (acoustic bass); Steve Wesson (musical saw). Producer: Royce Clark. Reissue producer: Colin Escott. Recorded at Singleton Studio, Nashville, Tennessee in March 1972. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Digitally remastered by Dr. Toby Mountain at NortheasternDigital Recording, Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. Recorded in 1972, this album wasn't properly released until 1990 (it appeared briefly only on 8-track tape). As if the solidly honest folk and country grounding of this music weren't enough, the band also included Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock. By the late eighties all of their reputations were such that there was a clearly delineated demand for this music to be made available (the title alludes to the Flatlander's brief existence and long shadow). Gilmore's "Dallas" and "Tonight I'm Gonna Go Downtown" made their first appearance here, as did Hancock's "You've Never Seen Me Cry." The guitars of the aforementioned participants are joined variously by fiddle, string bass, mandolin and musical saw. This Lubbock, Texas band journeyed to Nashville to record the album, hoping for a more significant response from the music business than the one they eventually received. The easy camaraderie of this music was as far removed from the Nashville country music scene of the early '70s as could be. However, it is those very attributes that have made this a lasting work. Bad Hair Day
Personnel: Weird Al Yankovic (vocals, keyboards, accordion); Jim West (guitar, banjo, background vocals); Nancy Cartwright, Hank Azaria (vocals); Joel Peskin (clarinet); Gary Herbig (baritone saxophone); Warren Luening (trumpet); Tommy Johnson (tuba); Steve Jay (bass, background vocals); Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz (drums, percussion); Lisa Popeil (background vocals). Step into the zany brain of Weird Al as he serves up another eclectic bag of pasquinades and original tunes. Yankovic's spoofs remain true to the melody, and the lyrics flow well as he satirizes a potpourri of poppers from Coolio("Amish Paradise") to TLC ("Phony Calls") to U2 ("Cavity Search," which urges, "Numb me/Drill me/Floss me/Bill me"). In "The Alternative Polka," Yankovic takes a whirlwind romp through 11 modern-rock songs, original lyrics and all. These gems, coupled with his own songs (from the They Might Be Giantish "Everything You Know Is Wrong" to the barbershop doo-wop of "Since You've Been Gone"), show the self-appointed King of Parody's funny yet firm grasp of popular music. Guns In The Ghetto
UB40: Ali Campbell, Robin Campbell (vocals, guitar); Brian Travers (soprano, tenor & baritone saxophones) Michael Virtue (keyboards, cello, vocals); Earl Falconer (bass, keyboards); James Brown (drums); Norman Hassan (percussion, vocals). Additional personnel: Martin Meredith (soparano & alto saxophones); Laurence Parry (trumpet, flugelhorn, valve trombone); Dan Armstrong (keyboards, programming); Ruby Turner, Simone Sauphanor (background vocals). Recorded at Kuff Studios, Jamaica; Dep International Studios, Birmingham, England. Recording primarily at Jamaica's Kuff Studios, UB40 used the surrounding island as a muse in lending their friendly pop/reggae sound a grittier edge. A heavy dub vibe permeates "Always There" while "Hurry Come Up" uses a rapid, lo-fi rhythm track to lend a dance-hallflavor. A small Jamaican town that's remained unchanged for 200 years inspired "Oracabessa Moonshine" while the title track came about after listening to the anti-gun campaign of an Ochos Rios radio station. Although UB40 strays into more eclectic territory this time around, GUNS IN THE GHETTO also reflects the band's crossover sensibilities. This comes across particularly on the lush ragga-ballad "Lisa" and the retro, Lisa Stansfield-sounding "I Really Can't Say." SKU: 1000517

On Border Radio 1939 Vol.3
The Carter Family: Sara Carter, Jeanette Carter, Helen Carter, June Carter, Anita Carter (vocals, guitar, autoharp); A.P. Carter, Maybelle Carter (vocals, guitar) Recorded at XET Studios, Monterrey, Mexico in 1939. Includes liner notes by Ed Kahn. ON BORDER RADIO is a collection of transcriptions the Carter Family, including the Carter children, made for Mexican radio station XET. This third volume of the Tex-Mex border radio transcriptions the Carter Family recorded for rogue radio station XET is heavy on contributions from the extended family, though the original trio still contribute fine performances, notably on "The Story of Charlie and Nellie" and "Sitting on Top of the World." Perhaps due to broadcasting schedules some performances are somewhat more truncated than usual, but in the main this set includes many intriguing snippets, such as A.P. Carter's "My Virginia Rose," a rare example of the family patriarch accompanying himself on guitar. The overall atmosphere on these transcriptions is relaxed, confident and casual. The Carters seem to be actually enjoying themselves, with none of their customary diffidence in front of the microphone. Jeanette Carter delivers a magical autoharp-accompanied version of the classic work song "Wadein the Water," and the entire family performs a rousing version of "Anchored in Love." SKU: 1012044

Loveless
My Bloody Valentine: Kevin Shields (vocals, guitar, samples); Bilinda Butcher (vocals, guitar); Debbie Googe (bass); Colm O'Ciosoig (drums, samples). Engineers include: Alan Moulder, Kevin Shields, Colm O'Ciosoig. To simply call this album the apotheosis of the shoegazing scene--that brief epoch of U.K. indie-rock in which bands turned away from melodic clarity and instead chased after the incendiary rapture of sheer guitar-driven noise--would be an understatement. LOVELESS is the sound of what might've happened if Brian Eno had produced DAYDREAM NATION. Or perhaps it's the thundering ambience of SISTER recorded backwards. Whatever the case, rarely has such a pristine, hypnotic record had such an ungodly amount of sonic tonnage. Opening with four quick beats from some kind of skeletal kick-drum and then proceeding through eleven gleaming movements of titanic distortion and severe melancholy, MBV's great wall of guitar architecture on this recording stands as a monument to the brilliance of its inventors. Released at roughly the same time that Nirvana birthed NEVERMIND, LOVELESS could not have been more different and yet as utterly relevant in shaping future soundscapes. A heavy, heavy record. Begin Here Plus
Following the magnificent reissue of 1968's classic ODESSEY AND ORACLE, with both stereo and mono mixes on onedisc, Big Beat concludes the reissue series begun with 1997's near-perfect four-disc box set ZOMBIE HEAVEN by reissuing the quintet's other album, 1964's BEGIN HERE. As keyboardist Rod Argent and bassist Chris White didn't blossom as songwriters until towards the end of the three-year stretch of singles between the two albums, most of BEGIN HERE consists of blues and R&B covers such as "Road Runner," "You Really Got A Hold On Me," and "I Got My Mojo Workin'," all of which work surprisingly well in the more delicate, jazz-inflected context of Argent's electric piano, Paul Atkinson's spare guitar and Colin Blunstone's breathy vocals. Besides the classic "She's Not There," the album's highlight is the definitive cover of George and Ira Gershwin's "Summertime." The remastered CD contains liner notes and bonus tracks. SKU: 4125402

Bette Of Roses
Personnel includes: Bette Midler (vocals); Buzz Feiten (guitar, tambourine); Daniel Jacob, Dean Parks, Michael Landau (guitar); Michael O'Reilly (E-bow guitar); Jay Dee Maness (steel guitar); Gene Orloff (concertmaster, violin); Shelley A. Woodworth (oboe); Robbie Kondor (piano, electric piano, organ, keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Steve Skinner (keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Larry J. Cohn (keyboards, synthesizer); Jerry Barnes (bass, background vocals); T-Bone Wolk, Reggie Hamilton (bass); Joe Mardin (drums, programming, background vocals); Tony Beard, Mike Baird (drums); Bonnie Hayes, Marc Mann (programming). Engineers: Michael O'Reilly, Michael O'Reilly, Jack Joseph Puig. Recorded at The New Hit Factory and Right Track Recording, New York; Andora Studios, Conway Studios and Record One, California. Bette Midler's first release in five years is a sweet, controlled, ballad-heavy confection that portrays her in a new light. No longer a brassy strumpet, the Divine Miss M is now the Pleasant Miss Bette, quirky singer of pretty songs. Fortunately, Midler has an endearing, highly expressive voice, making much of this easy listening material slightly tangy. Culling from her folk-singer/songwriter grab-bag, Midler opens BETTE OF ROSES with Cheryl Wheeler's "I Know This Town," an excellent song that brims with nostalgia, and one that could find a second life on the country charts if a Trisha, a Dolly or a Reba was to tackle it. "To Comfort You" is a sanitized and languid blues, but its companion piece, the brilliant Maria McKee-penned "To Deserve You," is a complicated off-kilter track full of musical, vocal and emotional swoops. The swirling "The Last Time," another McKee composition complete with a previously unheard of Midler falsetto, is as close to rocking out as Bette gets. The old Bette would have played the disillusionment themes of "Bed Of Roses" to full force with a sweet opening and her signature, dramatic ending; here, it is fairy-tale smooth with no hint of histrionics. Even in the closing "I Believe In Love" Midler doesn't camp it up. Yet, by keeping itstraight, she saves the track from becoming a novelty tune. "In This Life" is the sort of ballad which made Midler famous in the first place. It contains hints of the quiver and zeal with which Midler used to infuse all her songs. But as with lying on a bed of rose petals, the song and the album pretend to be nothing more than soft and pretty experiences. SKU: 1017830

Alive And Amplified
The scuzzy New York rock 'n' roll band's third studio album, following on from 2002's 'Electric Sweat'. On this album the band have enlisted the help of the Matrix songwriters (Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, Pink) to try and break into the mainstream which shows their previously soulful dirty rock transformed into a more palatable sound. Evoking late era MC5 but with a stripped down approach, this album has been compared by critics to the sound of peersJet and The Strokes, a progression from their Stones and Kinks influenced early works. Cannonball's Bossa Nova
Personnel: Cannonball Adderley, Paulo Moura (alto saxophone); Pedro Paulo (trumpet); Sergio Mendes (piano); Durval Ferreira (guitar); Octavio Bailey, Jr. (bass); Dom Um Romao (drums). Producer: Orrin Keepnews. Reissue producer: Orrin Keepnews, Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Plaza Sound, New York, New York on December 7, 10 & 11, 1962. Originally released on Riverside (9455). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster. Adderley's distinctly rich and bluesy alto sound, coupled with an ability to create fluid, highly melodic solos, earned him respect and admiration from the mid-'50s onward. Usually best known for his work with his own group and with the Miles Davis Quintet, Adderley also spearheaded a1962 collaboration with the Bossa Rio Sextet of Brazil. Marrying jazz and bossa, the musicians created CANNONBALL'S BOSSA NOVA, an album of unforgettable, sun-drenched tunes. It's clear from the start that Adderley's sound complements the sextet's original repertoire. His alto is always at the fore, whether playing the bewitching melody of Ferreira and Einhorn's "Clouds," or soloing lyrically over "Corcovado," a tune later popularized by Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto. Pedro Paulo's trumpet works with Paulo Moura's alto sax to produce sharp, well-executed riffs that add to the upbeat feel of "Minha Saudades" and "Batida Diferentes." Durval Ferreira's rhythmic strumming is ever present, and all players are at their best on "Sambops." SKU: 1028738
