On the eve of up-and-coming Seattle rockers Mother Love Bone's full-length major label debut (1990's APPLE), singer Andrew Wood succumbed to a drug overdose. Longtime friend Chris Cornell, the singer of Soundgarden, wrote several songs in Wood's memory. These were rooted more in classic rock than his full-time band's metallic sound. Cornell recorded them with ex-members of Mother Love Bone guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament, Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron, and then-unknowns Mike McCready and Eddie Vedder, in a project called Temple Of The Dog.
The project's self-titled 1991 debut fell on deaf ears. While such songs as the sullen album opener "Say Hello 2 Heaven" and the epic jamfest "Reach Down" have lyrics that deal with Wood's passing, most of the tracks deal with other topics, such as the album's high point "Hunger Strike," as well as the organic-sounding "Wooden Jesus," the hard rocker "Your Saviour," and the drowsy album closer "All Night Thing." A year after its initial release, the Seattle rock scene exploded and the massive success of the members of Temple Of The Dog prompted A&M tore-release both the album and the video for "Hunger Strike." Both were immediate hits the second time around.

As if we needed another reason to believe that Ozzy Osbourne is God, along comes THE OZZMAN COMETH, a double CD retrospective of one of the most enduring and influential figures in heavy metal. Consisting mostly of his post-Black Sabbath solo work as well as a live version of "Paranoid," this collection's biggest asset is the so-called "basement tapes," never-before-heard rehearsal tapes of four classic Sabbath songs. Dating back to 1970, "Black Sabbath" and "War Pigs" are the songs that transformed a petty thief from Birmingham, England into the godfather of heavy metal.
But if Sabbath cemented his place in the rock 'n' roll canon, his solo work raised him to legendary status. Working with former Quiet Riot guitarist Randy Rhoads, Osbourne set the tone for the 80's metal revival with songs like "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley." Capping off the collection is a seventeen minute interview with Ozzy from 1988, where he speaks frankly about the ups and downs in his career (parents beforewarned: this is not for the faint of heart). Ozzy has made it through all the pitfalls of a life in rock and roll and has come out on the other side redeemed and renewed.

It's a testament to Snoop Dogg's skills as arapper that he can voice some of the same politically incorrect sentiments as his West Coast hip-hop peers without receiving the same kind of public outcry. The reason for this is that Snoop's delivery is so perfectly understated and ostensibly devoid of malice that it's hard to emotionally connect the vocalist with the more disturbing aspects of his chosen subject matter.
This phenomenon is evident throughout DEAD MAN WALKIN almost more than on any of Snoop's previous releases. From both his tone and his tales, one gets the distinct impression that sustained access to "the chronic" is more important to Snoop's mindset than the sexual braggadocio of "Head Doctor" or the tough talk of "Gangsta Walk." Make no mistake, though; this doesn't detract from his image or credibility one iota. In fact, it's probably why we love him.

In the everything-old-is-new-again department, some crafty Hollywood types decided to reinterpret the premise of Shakespeare's TAMING OF THE SHREW as a pop song-filled teen movie. Those who pick up the soundtrack will be pleased to know that those tapped for contributions include the godfather of funk George Clinton ("Atomic Dog") and second-wave ska pioneers Madness ("Wings of a Dove"). The bulk of the album is occupied by younger artists, though; there are probably more than afew Madness albums in the collection of Save Ferris ("I Know"), while the chirpy pop of Letters to Cleo (who gamely tackle the Cheap Trick classic "I Want You To Want Me" and Nick Lowe's "Cruel to be Kind) is the ideal aural complement to the film's light-hearted feel.

The title of this lengthy, two-disc affair may be a bit misleading; it might suggest some sort of Prince-like construction full of finely wrought sonic details and painstaking production. In fact, the opposite is true--it's araw, minimalistic, lo-fi effort that has the immediacy of home demo recordings. Fortunately, it's that very quality that has endeared Cody ChesnuTT (the weird capitalization is his idea, folks) to a panoply of critics, earning him a spot on countless best-of-2002 lists. Still, THE HEADPHONE MASTERPIECE didn't hit the album charts until 2003, possibly helped by exposure through touring with the Roots.
While this is a genre-spanning affair that incorporates pop, rock, soul, funk, and hip-hop in roughly equal measures, it's a million miles from the neo-soul of a Maxwell or D'Angelo. In terms of sonic context, ChesnuTT is more aligned with mercurial four-track scamps like Guided by Voices, churning out songs and snippets without any grand scheme in mind. Attitude-wise though, he seems to be coming from the hip-hop mindset, as the dominant lyrical preoccupations are world-beating braggadocio and the unabashed celebration of social and personal improprieties of every stripe. Whether you call Cody ChesnuTT pop, soul, or hip-hop, one thing is apparent from listening to the HEADPHONE MASTERPIECE; the man's got rock-star confidence to spare.

This California-based punk rock combo has been rocking since the early '90s, slowly building up their fan base through the usual grueling touring schedule that was the only option available to a band devoid of hits. That's all changed with their fifth full-length album, the defiantly energetic AN AMERICAN PARADOX. Strung Out delivers a tightly produced and played set that's a culmination of allthat's gone before, all polka-fast beats, angst-y vocals and slabs of thick guitar.
They're not above producing their own brand of pop, though--witness the infectious almost-power pop of "Dig"--but mostly they speak to the preoccupations of disaffected youth with anthems such as "Kill Your Scene" and the mad headlong rush of the album opener, "Velvet Alley." There's some nifty guitar work and tricky time changes, too, on "Cult of the Subterranean," which shows they've spent at least some of their time in the tour van wisely, while "Cemetery" displays their awareness of a well-played metal riff. PARADOX is that best-of-both-worlds combination of punk energy and musical savvy that's a rare find today, and even rarer on the Billboard charts.

A dozen years after his first live release (A LIVE ONE), Loudon Wainwright released this excellent set. As with itspredecessor, the album is an exemplary look at Wainwright's career up to the point of the album's release. CAREER MOVES is a generous helping of 19 songs, and includes six new ones. The album was recorded on a single night at one of his regular and favored venues, New York City's Bottom Line, and benefits from the contributions of multi-instrumentalists Chaim Tannenbaum and David Mansfield.
Throughout, Wainwright's casual ease shines through as he toys with his own songs and jokes with the audience. With a wealth of material to draw from, he offers old favorites such as "The Swimming Song" and "The Man Who Couldn't Cry" (which Johnny Cash covered, closing his AMERICAN RECORDINGS the following year), and obscurities like "The Acid Song." He especially shines on delicately emotional autobiographical numbers like "Westchester County," "Five Years Old," "April Fool's Day Morn." CAREER MOVES is an excellent introduction to Wainwright's work, as well as an engaging set for those already familiar.

MOCK TUDOR is one of Richard Thompson's finest releases in a career that has spanned 30 years. The album was produced by Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf, who've worked with Beck and the Foo Fighters. There's a scrappy immediacy to these dozen songs and an earthy quality that's evident as soon as a harmonica joins in the mix on the opening track. Many of the songs chronicle Thompson's time spent growing up in and around London in the '60s. These offerings are fraught with soured romances, lost dreams and scheming hucksters, but always retain a glimmer of hopeful prayer. Though they've never attracted as much attention as his casually innovative guitar playing, Thompson's vocals have always been masterful, and again they dazzle on MOCK TUDOR. Thompson is a genre unto himself, crafting stellar albums one after another. This one is near the top of the list.

This 1989 release is a compilation of several dates Baker recorded with pianist and music director, Russ Freeman, in the early to mid '50s. Baker and Freeman were two of the pioneers of the post-war, West Coast "cool" sound. However, On SINGS FROM LET'S GET LOST, Baker's trumpet style is warm and intimate. Moreover, his boyish, Oklahoman accent adds a cozy, and, at times, whimsical freedom to the music.
Baker's mellifluous approach to jazz has made him one of the great ballad kings. His versions of "My Funny Valentine" and "I Get Along Without You Very Well," have been hailed as definitive renditions. On these tunes, Baker croons with a drowsy melancholy, but never sounds lethargic or lazy. Instead, he's able to emotionally charge the lyrics, making them resonate deeply with listeners. A great storyteller, Baker's laments on LET'S GET LOST are timeless.

Then there were two. With George Harrison's passing in November 2001, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney were the only surviving members of the Beatles. Thankfully, Starr chose to press on in a creative manner rather than exiling himself in grief. The result is RINGO RAMA, the second album the Fab Four drummer has worked on with uber-producer Mark Hudson following 1998's VERTICAL MAN. From the outset, Starr weaves the past with the future, making allusions to "It Don't Come Easy" on "Eye to Eye" and bringing in longtime pal Eric Clapton to solo on the poignant Harrison tribute "Never Without You."
Certain Richard Starkey trademarks bubble up throughout, including his famous sense of humor (the double entendre-laden travelogue "Missouri Loves Company") and his love of country music (a twangy "Write One For Me" featuring Willie Nelson). This pop-punk outfit started outyoung--VERY young. They were still in their teens when they released their first album, and this one--their third--naturally finds them still flush with youthful enthusiasm but bearing distinct signs of songwriting maturity. There's no slowdown of excitement on STAY WHAT YOU ARE--the band still practices four-on-the-floor, heavy-guitar punk-pop a la Green Day or Blink-182.
