With 1997's DIG ME OUT, Sleater-Kinney were about as mainstream-popular as decidedly dissonant indie-rock girls could be. As the archetypal riot-grrrl collective, the trio found themselves emblazoned on the cover of all the requisite magazines and in practically every fashionable up-and-comer's list. Which begged the eternal question of the follow-up, and how to make one. Luckily, Sleater-Kinney's appeal lies primarily in its iconoclasm, and with THE HOT ROCK it retained its indie credibility on the Kill Rock Stars label, while becoming even more raw and experimental.
Whilethe album features undeniably catchy ditties such as the title track and the singalong "Get Up," it also includes darker, more intricate cuts such as "God Is a Number," and "Banned From the End of the World." Though definitely not a calculated effort to woo the world opened up to them by their unexpected popularity, THE HOT ROCK remains a refreshingly rocking album.

WOWEE ZOWEE is a knowing, minor-key discombobulation of heavy post-punk and rock experimentalism amidst a slew of expansive country-rock songs. Production-wise, it's a clean record, a step closer to the mainstream. Structure-wise, it's a step away. You can easily read this sound as a reaction to Pavement suddenly having turned into a hot commercial commodity after 1994's critically praised CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN. Pavement is now anext-big-thing that doesn't want to be one. Both in structure and lyrics, songs like "Rattled By The Rush," "Brinx Job" and "Serpentine Pad" sneer at thoughtless alt-rock careerism, even as they try to figure out a way to survive it with the soul intact.
But while it works to offend and confound listeners, Pavement can't hide a certain sheer-pop glee that has always been present in its music. "Grounded" and "Kennel District" are what you might call Pavement rock--guitarrorist pop songs that aim to challenge you sonically while injecting you with a direct pop thrill. Those songs and the acoustic "We Dance" are also perfect examples of the emotional accuracy that singer-guitarists Stephen Malkmus (who has now taken to calling himself S.M. Jenkins) and Spiral Stairs can portray. When they combine such insight with guitar sounds of the future, this best of all post-Nirvana, American rock bands flies in directions others haven't even pondered.

The SOUNDBOMBING series features some of the hottest underground rap artists gathered under one sonic roof. On the third volume, the bi-coastal collaboration of New York hip-hop producer Cipha Sounds and California cat Mr.Choc yields yet another impressive batch of tracks full of atmosphere and punch. While individual artists do have their spotlight moments here (Mos Def turns in a typically commanding performance on the murky but arresting "Freak Daddy," for example), the collaborative spirit is encouraged and winds up as the reigning aesthetic. On "Round & Round Remix," the melodic vocals of Jonell are offset by the tag-team raps of no less impressive a cabal than Method Man, Lool G Rap, and Pharoahe Monch. The spiritual concerns and transcendent vocal harmonies of Zap Mama are countered by the earthly interjections of Common and Talib Kweli on "Yelling Away." Like its predecessors, SOUNDBOMBING III represents the inevitable forward motion of the hip-hop community, with East and West Coast crews eschewing rivalry in favor of the common good.

Following up the almostpornographically violent MURDER BALLADS, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds switch gears and come up with an album of...you guessed it, love songs. Though known to many as the Stephen King of rock and roll, Cave has a way with lush, heartfelt ballads, and on THE BOATMAN'S CALL he gets to flex his romantic muscles. Still, with Australia's maven of morbidity at the reigns, you can bet you're not exactly venturing into Elton John territory here.
Cave's romanticism tends more toward Jacques Brel than Air Supply. THE BOATMAN'S CALL is full of sparsely-arranged, piano-based ruminations on love gone up in flames. In "Brompton Oratory" Cave observes that "No God up in the sky/No devil beneath the sea/Could do the job that you did/Of bringing me to my knees." Even in the midst of an idyllic situation, as in "People Ain't No Good," Cave can't help but bring his misanthropic tendencies to the fore. The Bad Seeds take a more subdued role this time around, providing subtle accompaniment to Cave's Dating Game From Hell.

In retrospect, it's hard to believe both FLYING TEAPOT and its successor ANGELS EGG were released within months of each other in 1973. Each is an elaborate, distinct musical statement. ANGEL'S EGG is the second installment in Gong's legendary "Radio Gnome Trilogy," and it expands upon the ground brokenby TEAPOT admirably. Though the band was still pursuing their spacy art-rock direction, the sound here became simultaneously jazzier and more ethereal. Didier Malherbe's sax and flute took a more active role, as did Steve Hillage's elaborate guitar textures.
An important personnel shift had also occurred with the arrival of drummer Pierre Moerlen, mallet percussionist Mirielle Bauer and bassist Mike Howlett. These three were very much of the fusion school. After singer/songwriter Daevid Allen's departure, they would turn Gong into a full-fledged fusion outfit, but with Allen's whimsical songcraft still the defining factor, they simply add a more sophisticated instrumental edge. ANGEL'S EGG is a bit more sophisticated than TEAPOT, but an equal masterpiece.

Al Green is not often thought of as one of the Great Soul Singers. But that he is, as this two-CD set easily bears out. At a time when the style of sultry Southern soul/rhythm & blues was going out of fashion (late '60s/early '70s) to be supplanted by smoother styles that appealedto more easygoing pop tastes, Al Green kept the fires burning. He was no throwback--Green just built on the gospel-derived style of Sam Cooke. Green's voice was a bittersweet falsetto with just a touch of grittiness. The musical backing of producer Willie Mitchell's Memphis musicians let the music--and Green--have some room, never playing more than necessary, and providing a subtly insinuating groove. No clutter, no overt concessions to mainstream pop--just a suave, passionate yet restrained singer singing thoughtful, concise songs that oozed down-home funk. "Let's Stay Together" was Green's biggest crossover hit, but in the late '70s, the Talking Heads' slinky version of "Take Me To the River" became that band's first hit. This superb collection collects many of Al Green's best songs from the years 1969-1978, and is highly recommended to old fans and the curious alike.

For Verve's Coleman Hawkins compilation, legend in his own right Sonny Rollins picks Hawk's best recorded material, choosing mainly material from the 1940s, with the exception of two tracks from a session Hawk recorded with pianist Oscar Peterson in 1957.
From the solo saxophone musings of "Picasso" to the plaintive ballad, "Like Someone in Love," to the Latin stylings of "La Rosita," to the uptempo swing of "Cattin' at Keynote," these selections have a slow-burning intensity. Without question, Coleman Hawkins is the father of the tenor saxophone;his thick, even coarse sound and fluttery vibrato jump-started the idea of using tenor sax in jazz, opening the door for others such as Lester Young, who was the progenitor of a more modern approach to the instrument.

The 1974 tour by Bob Dylan and the Band brought together two of the most-respected acts in rock history for what was one of the biggest concert events of the decade. Recorded at several different venues over thecourse of the two-month tour, BEFORE THE FLOOD captures Dylan and The Band in fine form. Having backed Dylan on and off since 1966, The Band were very comfortable with his music, and on this album they provide Dylan with some of the finest accompaniment of his career.
Dylan opens the show with spirited versions of hits like "It Ain't Me Babe" and "Lay Lady Lay" as well as the acidic "Ballad of a Thin Man." Having fired up the crowd, Dylan steps away from the mike to let the Band perform barnstorming versions of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and other classics from their repertoire. After The Band nearly brings down the house with their intense rendition of "The Weight," Dylan returns to bring it all back home with powerful performances of "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Blowin' In The Wind" providing a spectacular finale to one of the finest live rock albums of the seventies.

With FOR YOUR PLEASURE, the second Roxy Music album, the band began to explore a little more of the "dark side" of the glamorous world that had become their lyrical and musical playground. Even the cover art suggests this division: a preposterously posed women walking a snarling panther is watched by singer Bryan Ferry, decked out in chauffeur's livery and removed from the action, merely observing. Musically, this decay is examined most clearly in "In Every Dream Home a Heartache," a disturbing tale about an inflatable sex doll that, at times, suggests some of the creepier moments from the Doors catalogue--"The End" in particular.
Opening with the spectacular debauch of "Do the Strand," the album pulls no punches--"It burns your bluejeans, you know what I mean" indeed! Together with "Editions of You," it shows the band moving through the similar territory inhabited by "Virginia Plain" (from ROXY MUSIC), quasi-rock shot through with squalling saxophones. The nine-minute slow burn of "The Bogus Man" displays Paul Thompson's solid drumming to great effect, while the rest of the band fleshes things out with a not exactly scary, but decidedly "off" atmosphere. Another classic.

Pete Townshend's varied solo career has encompassed everything from great rock and pop to pompous, high-falutin' concept pieces. Thiscollection (the title of which is drawn from "Misunderstood," originally found on Townshend and Ronnie Lane's 1977 collaboration ROUGH MIX) represents the cream of the crop. The music absorbs a truly dizzying range of styles & influences: tango, klezmer, flamenco, film music, Gypsy/Rom, Tex-Mex, ECM Records-style soundscapes and Tom Waits. Waits seems to be a big influence: check out the fractured tango/waltz "De Cara A La Pared." Mournful clarinets wail, percussion sounds like thunder in the distance and Lhasa's voice--versatile, tartly seductive in a bittersweet way--draws you in. The adventurous, especially those who are into world-music fusion, should get this.

This 1969 performance finds Soft Machine operating as a trio, with keyboardist Mike Ratledge, drummer and vocalist Robert Wyatt, and bass player Hugh Hopper. The material comes from the group's first two albums (simply numbered, as were all Soft Machine studio releases up through SEVENTH). It's amazing to hear Soft Machine pulling of the studio recordings' complex compositional structures-andto hear the musicians cutting loose.
The grooves Soft Machine conjures up can be quite remarkable. A song like "Dada Was Here" has a dazzling array of equally compelling, rhythmically and melodically dynamic passages. The band was to soon add additional players and head in a more decidedly jazz-oriented direction. In this performance, one hears a group of bold and audacious musicians and sees the seeds Soft Machine would continue to sow for another decade.
