Season Of Glass
SEASON OF GLASS contains bonus tracks. Includes liner notes by Yoko Ono. All tracks have been digitally remastered. SEASONS OF GLASS was Yoko Ono's first solo album in the wake of John Lennon's death. In a controversial move-hailed by some as brave and defiant but denounced by others as tasteless and exploitative-SEASONS' cover photo depicts the view of Central Park from the apartment Ono and Lennon shared. Lennon's bloodied, shattered glasses sit on the windowsill, in the foreground. It's a staggering image and one that accuratelyreflects the music . Though most of SEASONS was recorded before Lennon's murder, it's impossible to hear the songs without that event in mind. Tragedy adds layers of poignancy to such songs as "Goodbye Sadness" and "Nobody Sees Me Like You Do" and intensifies the anger of "She Gets Down On Her Knees" and "No No No." This reissue contains four bonus tracks, one of which ("Walking On Thin Ice") was the song Lennon and Ono were working on the night Lennon was killed. Atomic Mr. Basie, The (The Complete Atomic Basie)
Personnel: Count Basie (piano); Joe Williams (vocals); Wendell Culley, Snooky Young, Thad Jones, Joe Newman (trumpet); Henry Coker, Al Grey, Benny Powell (trombone); Marshall Royal, Frank Wess, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Frank Foster, Charles Fowlkes (reeds); Freddie Green (guitar); Eddie Jones (bass); Sonny Payne (drums). Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Capitol Studios, New York, New York between October 21 & 22, 1957. Includes liner by Barry Ulanov & Michael Cuscuna. This 1957 release features Neal Hefti's arrangements and the ever-exciting sound of what became known as the Second Testament Basie Band (the first having featured Lester Young, Herschel Evans, Dicky Wells et al). The album opens with a fiery version of"The Kid from Red Bank"; other highlights include "Whirly-Bird" and "Teddy the Toad." As usual, Count Basie's stride-inflected piano style and the brass section's sudden, sharp stabs help define the band's sound. The COMPLETE ATOMIC BASIE isn't just about screaming high notes and blistering scale flourishes though; subtlety and dynamic variety characterize several charts. We hear this best in the reeds' lilting swing on "Midnite Blue," and in the quiet, mellow groove of "Li'l Darlin'"; the sparseness of the latter's arrangement highlights the often-neglected guitarist Freddie Green's inimitable strumming. One of Basie's finest albums, THE COMPLETE ATOMIC BASIE is a swinging gem. SKU: 5064505

They Never Saw Me Coming
The explicit version of THEY NEVER SAW ME COMING contains six tracks not included on the edited version. Personnel: TQ, E-40, Tray Deee, Ericka Yancey, Too Short, Daz Dillinger, Kurupt, Jay (vocals);Rob Bacon (acoustic & electric guitars); Femi Otejunde (electric guitar, bass, keyboards, programming); Mike Mosley (keyboards, programming); Sam Bostic (keyboards); Mike Mosley, Tye Howard, Jaycen Joshua (programming). Producers include: Mike Mosley, Femi Ojetunde, Jazze Pha, Jaycen Joshua, Dent. Engineers include: Anthony "AJ" Jefferies, James Murray, Robby Hamilton. After "Westside," his infectious ode to the West Coast, catapulted him into the spotlight, TQ released his debut THEY NEVER SAW ME COMING, in hopes of cementing his status as one of the up-and-coming faces in the hip-hop game. The eighteen-track album demonstrates that this cat from the west is definitely no one-hit wonder. His voice combines with the beats to take the listener on a smooth and relaxing ride. Of particular note are the collaborations with Erica Vancey ("When I Get Out") and Daz Dillinger and Kurupt ("The Comeback"), sure to convince listeners that TQ is one of the promising and refreshing artists to enter the crowded late-'90s West Coast hip-hop scene. Tug Of War
Personnel: Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, bass, drums); Carl Perkins (vocals, guitar); Stevie Wonder (vocals, synthesizer); Peter Marshall (spoken vocals); Denny Laine, Eric Stewart(guitar); Jack Rothstein, Bernard Partridge (violin); Ian Jewel (viola); Keith Harvey (cello); Adrian Brett (pan pipes); Jack Brymer (clarinet); George Martin (piano); Andy Mackay (lyricon); Stanley Clarke (bass); Steve Gadd, Ringo Starr, Adrian Sheppard, Dave Mattacks (drums); Campbell Maloney (percussion); Linda McCartney (background vocals). This album was a reunion for McCartney and the Beatles' producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick, and includes McCartney's ballad to the late John Lennon, "Here Today". It also includes 2 collaborations with Stevie Wonder, "What's That You're Doing?" and the number 1 hit, "Ebony and Ivory". Chartwise, TUG OF WAR was McCartney's biggest post-Beatles moment, and, not surprisingly, it found him reunited with Beatles producer George Martin for the first time since their ABBEY ROAD heyday. Yet, the album was also an artistic triumph, showing off McCartney's wide range as songwriter and performer and his ability to incorporate an incomparable supporting cast (Ringo, Carl Perkins, Stevie Wonder) into a variety of roles. After nearly a decade in Wings, all too often structured as a (semi-) democratic vehicle, McCartney flexed his superstar muscle and came up with a smash. TUG OF WAR is most remembered for "Ebony & Ivory," a harmonious pop duet with Wonder that, even upon first inspection, sounded like part wondrous natural meditation, part brilliantly calculated songwriting. Of course it's both, and, as such, stands next to "Every Breath You Take" and "With or Without You" as a great pop standard of the '80s. But take note that the album's other Paul-Stevie duet, Wonder's funky "What's That You're Doing?," is the most groove-ridden song McCartney ever recorded. And the album's other big hit, "Take it Away," is vintage McCartney in reminiscence mode (ala Ray Davies' "Come Dancing"), with possibly the last great chorus he ever wrote. SKU: 1000396

Bathhouse Betty
Personnel includes: Bette Midler (vocals); Dean Parks, Dennis Budimir, Ira Siegel, Tim Pierce, Michael Thompson (guitar); Brock Walsh (banjo); Eric Weissberg, Moon, Jay Berliner (ukulele); Robbie Kondor (mandolin); Bob Efford, Richard Mitchell, Roger Neumann (saxophone); Warren Luening, Jack Sheldon (trumpet); Richard Todd (French horn); Leslie Benedict (trombone); James Self (tuba); Kim Bullard, David Foster, Carole King, Cyrus Chestnut, Randy Kerber, Randy Waldman, Steve Skinner, Phil Shenale, Greg Hilfman (keyboards); Matt Bissonette, Nathan East, Ron Carter, Jerry Barnes, Chuck Domanico, James Leonhard (bass); Gregg Bissonette, Rick Marotta, Steve Schaeffer, Emil Richards, Lewis Nash, John Robinson (drums); Royal Crown Revue. Producers include: Ted Templeman, David Foster, Brock Walsh, Marc Shaiman, Chuckii Booker. Bette Midler's got all the bases covered on this exuberant album, from swelling, big-voiced ballads ("That's How Love Moves") to quieter, soulful songs ("Song of Bernadette," "Lullaby in Blue"), the loud, hip-hop bitchfest "I'm Beautiful" and the peculiar and campy ("Ukulele Lady," "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show'"). For the uninitiated, BATHHOUSE BETTY is likely to be mystifying but oddly irresistible, while Midler's longtime fanswill find this album to be a comeback of sorts, a return to the uninhibited energy of her 1972 debut in a way that none of her interim releases have even hinted at. We've known for some time that Midler has a big, ferocious voice which can go all soft and sweet or soar to meet the heights of "Wind Beneath My Wings," but what we might have forgotten (and she reminds us) is what being a diva is all about. One Part Lullaby
The Folk Implosion: Lou Barlow (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harp, organ, Omnichord, Melodica, optigan, Korg synthesizer, bass, glockenspiel, samples); John Davis (guitar, banjo, dulcimer, Arp synthesizer, drums, samples, drum programming, background vocals). Additional personnel: Mia Doi Todd (vocals); Wally Gagel (keyboards, drums, percussion, programming); Josh Randall (programming). Engineers: Robert Caranza, Wally Gagel, Sue Kappa. The Folk Implosion (a wry twist on "Blues Explosion") sounds neither like the fey folk-pop of John Davis nor like the abrasive dissonance of Lou Barlow's other band, Sebadoh. On "One Part Lullaby," Folk Implosion dives deep into the art of the overdub and comes up with some smooth polished pearls of pop. Vocals are layered on as thick as on any Janet Jackson disc, and songs slide unselfconsciously between major and minor modes. A veritable toy box of instruments (including omnichord, tuned drinking glasses, and a psaltery) was enlisted in service of the lush sound, helping bring about an album that is a far cry from the strident tones of the group'sfirst disc. Rewired (+DVD)
Fifth album from former Genesis guitarist and his band comes five years after their last, self-titled offering and is their first since the death of co-vocalist Paul Young in 2000. With greater creative input from their remaining singer Paul Carrack, this sticks with the classic pop-rock songwriting of yore, whilst stepping up the electronic flourishes with which they experimented on their last album. This special edition also contains a bonusDVD featuring videos for some of the album's songs. SKU: 6560815

Lyricist Lounge Vol.2 [PA]
From its humble beginnings in 1991 as an open-microphone night, the Lyricist Lounge helped launch the careers of such hip-hop heavyweights as Mos Def, Eminem, Foxy Brown, Rah Digga, and the late Notorious B.I.G. LYRICIST LOUNGE 2, a stellar compilation record, features both mainstream and underground hip-hop talent. Commencing with a live freestyle from Biggie Smalls, and then heading into a thumping cut from Mos Def, Pharoache Monch, and Nate Dogg called "Oh No," the album never looks back. No watered-down, commercial radio-friendly bubble gum rap here, LYRICIST LOUNGE 2 is pure hip-hop. Other big names are Q-Tip ("Makin' it Blend"), Erick Sermon ("Battle"), and Redman ("W.K.Y.A"), while a sampling of the many killer tracks includes "The Legendary Street Team" from Kool G Rap and M.O.P., "Ms.Fat Booty 2" from Mos Def and Ghostface Killah, and "Sharp Shooters" from Talib Kweli and Dead Prez. LYRICIST LOUNGE 2 is everything you could want in a gritty, hot beat, slick lyric compilation. SKU: 1082511

Now
Personnel includes: Maxwell (vocals); Stuart Matthewman, Wah Wah Watson, Hod David (guitar); Bruce Bouton (pedal steel guitar); Andre Roberson (saxophone); Steve Bernstein (trumpet); Clark Gayton (trombone); Etienne Stadwijk, Federica Pena (keyboards); Michael Bland (drums); Paul J. Falcone (programming). Engineers include: Paul J. Falcone, Mike Pela, Larry Phillabaum. "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary Nite." At the centerpiece is a studio version of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work," a staple of Maxwell's concerts previously showcased on the live 1997 EP UNPLUGGED. Delivered with a crystalline falsetto, delicate strings and subtle pedal steel, it's a daring move worthy of Prince-ly accolades. Elsewhere, Maxwell easily moves between sly funk (a percolating "Get To Know Ya") and sleek, between-the-sheets posturing (the Isley Brothers-flavored "Changed"). Other highlights includethe goosebump-inducing slow jam "For Lovers Only," chugging come-on "Lifetime," and irresistible end-of-album funk workout "Now/At The Party." NOW is a musical outing worthy of silk sheets and champagne. SKU: 1065209

Glittering Prize 1981-1992
SimpleMinds: Jim Kerr (vocals); Charlie Burchill (guitar, keyboards); Michael McNeil (piano, keyboards); Derek Forbes, Malcolm Foster, John Giblin (bass); Mel Gaynor, Brian McGee, Mike Ogletree (drums). Producers include: Jimmy Iovine, Bob Clearmountain, Keith Forsey, Trevor Horn, Steve Lillywhite. Includes liner notes by Brian Hogg. Digitally remastered by Chris Blair (Abbey Road Studios, London, England). Picking up where the band's previous hits compilation, 1982's THEMES FOR GREAT CITIES left off, 1995's GLITTERING PRIZE compacts five albums into 12 tracks. Because they were bigger critical and commercial successes, 1982's NEW GOLD DREAM, 1984's SPARKLE IN THE RAIN and 1985's ONCE UPON A TIME are better represented than 1989's STREET FIGHTING YEARS and 1991's REAL LIFE. Those two albums are well enough represented by the few tracks contained here that their purchase may now be unnecessary for all but the most devoted Simple Minds fan. The mid-'80s tracks, particularly "Up on the Catwalk," "Promised You a Miracle," "Someone Somewhere in Summertime" and of course "Don't You (Forget About Me)," sound as good as ever. Their presence gives the latter tracks some added luster by their proximity. SKU: 1000635
