Some Girls
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, piano); Keith Richards (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, bass); Ron Wood (acoustic & electric guitars, pedal steel guitar, bass, percussion, background vocals); Bill Wyman (synthesizer, bass); Charlie Watts (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Sugar Blue (harmonica); Mel Collins (saxophone); Ian "Mac" McLagan (electric piano, Hammond organ). Principally recorded at E.M.I. Studios, Paris, France. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios). SOME GIRLS includes the hits "Beast Of Burden" and "Shattered," and one of the biggest-selling singles of the Stones' career, the disco-crossover "Miss You." The title track caused its share of controversy when its lyrics were attacked as sexist and racist. Possibly fearing the aging dinosaur label in the punk climate of 1978 New York City, SOME GIRLS rocked harder and more consistently than most Stones albums from the '70s. Revitalized by the chummy guitar dynamic between Keith Richards' impressionistic riffs and Ronnie Wood's perfectionist lead work, the album's merit is in the diversity of its tracks. Starting with the disco elixir of "Miss You," SOME GIRLS marked new territory for the band. As Ronnie's second album as an official member, the album showed that the Stones' sound had reworked itself, proving there was more to their dynamic than just white boy blues. Therange of Ronnie's guitar work spans from the searing country lead in "Far Away Eyes" to the near-rockabilly twang in "Shattered," and finds the Stones sounding tighter and more excited than on their previous albums. From placing their stamp on The Temptations' "Just My Imagination" to the big-city neurosis of "When The Whip Comes Down" and "Shattered," 1978's SOME GIRLS is a wild rumpus throughout. SKU: 1004731

Chutes Too Narrow
The Shins: James Mercer (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Marty Crandall (keyboards); Dave Hernandez (bass); Jesse Sandoval (drums). Additional personnel: Kevin Suggs (pedal steel guitar); Annemarie Ruljiancich (violin). Recorded in James Mercer's Basement, Portland, Oregon and Avasti Studio, Seattle, Washington. When the Shins bowled over music fans and critics alike in 2001 seemingly out of nowhere (but actually out of Albuquerque and years of playing together) with OH, INVERTED WORLD, their stunningly beautiful debut, the comparisons camepouring in. Scribes likened their insistent, melodic sound and James Mercer's hyper-literate, oblique but mellifluous lyrics to many mostly anachronistic, all deeply revered sources, including everything from the Beach Boys to Love. The follow-up, CHUTES TOO NARROW, meets and often manages to exceed the tremendous, burgeoning buzz surrounding it. Mercer and co. retain all the elements that made their debut delectable, as the melodies flow hither and thither, a subtle rapture confident in its ability to entrance. Delicately crafted yet explosively poetic lines again abound (such as "secretly I want to bury in the yard the grey remains of a friendship scarred"), and by the time the sing-a-long of "So Says I" kicks in, the die is cast. Nestled near the end of the consistently captivating record is the countrified should-be classic "Gone for Good." With its riding-the-rails beat and irrefutable lyrical hook, it seems to sum up the pensive feel of the whole record, "I find a fatal flaw in the logic of love and go out of my head." Such ponderous musings rarely ever sounded so good. SKU: 6549354

Camino Palmero
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular audio tracks, multimedia computer files, and a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. The Calling includes: Alex Band (vocals); Aaron Kamin (guitar, mandolin, sitar, percussion, loops); Sean Woolstenhulme (guitar); Paul Mirkovich (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Bob Glaub (bass); Matt Lang, Nate Wood (drums, percussion); Satnam Ramgotra (tabla, percussion); Ron Fair (programming). Recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, California. These savvy young gents from Los Angeles have incorporated a variety of influences on CAMINO PALMERO for a hitbound sonic ride that will appeal to several camps of listeners. On the one hand, there's the voice of appropriately named Alex Band, whichlands somewhere in between Creed-like declamation and Third Eye Blind modern pop. The rest of the band similarly pitches its approach in a free-trade zone where breakbeats, hard-edged guitars, sparkling pop melodies, and folk-rock-derived arpeggios all coexist without conflict. It doesn't hurt matters that the Calling has a knack for hook-laden songwriting, as evidenced by everything from the up-tempo opening cut "Unstoppable" to the delicate ballad "Could It Be Any Harder." Empire
Queensryche: Geoff Tate (vocals, keyboards); Chris DeGarmo (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, 12-string guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Michael Wilton (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, 12-string guitar); Eddie Jackson (electric bass, fretless basss, background vocals); Scott Rockenfield (drums, percussion). Additional personnelincludes: Michael Kamen (arranger). Producer: Peter Collins. Compilation producer: David K. Tedds. Recorded at Vancouver Studios, Vancouver, Canada and Triad Studios, Redmond, Washington in 1990. Originally released on EMI (92806). Includes liner notes by Paul Suter. This is part of EMI Records "Queensryche Remastered" series. With the breakthrough success and worldwide respect that Queensryche gained from their conceptual masterpiece OPERATION: MINDCRIME, how could the band possibly outdo or at the least match themselves? Just two years after the release of MINDCRIME Queensryche reinvented themselves (though certainly not for the last time). While many fans were clamoring for a conceptual sequel, the band returned to a song-oriented approach that was more art rock and less metal-edged. Now quite far removed from the fantasy and techno-paranoia lyrical themes of their earlier works, the band tackled overcoming social and physical handicaps ("Best I Can"), poverty, and regret ("Della Brown"). Focused much less on the darker side of love that was always so prevalent in their sound, the band was now brave enough to be romantic ("Another Rainy Night" and "Hand On Heart"). While Queensryche lost some diehard metal fans with EMPIRE, the mature sound and tight production of Peter Collins (Rush) saw the band break into the mainstream (and top off at #9 on the Billboard singles chart) with the Pink Floyd-inspired "Silent Lucidity." King Of Country Music, The
Full performer name: Roy Acuff & His Smoky Mountain Boys. Includes liner notes by Peter Dempsey. Digitally remastered by Martin Haskell. It's not hyperbole to call this compilation THE KING OF COUNTRY MUSIC, because for decades, that's what this shy Tennesseean vocalist-fiddle player was known as. From his 1938 debut at the Grand Ol' Opry playing "Wabash Cannonball" with his group the Smoky Mountain Boys to his death in 1992, Roy Acuff was one of country music's most important and influential performers. This excellent 25-track compilation is a bit skimpy on the liner notes, but the music it contains, from "Wabash Cannonball" to standards like "Great Speckled Bird," Wreck on the Highway" and the weeper "I'll Forgive You But I Can'tForget," is simply priceless. Come On Over

Engineers include: Jeff Balding, Bob Bullock, Mike Carroll. "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. "Come On Over" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. "You've Got A Way" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Song Of The Year. "You're Still The One" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Performance and Best Country Song, and was nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. COME ON OVER was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Album Of The Year and Best Country Album. Following her smash hit THE WOMAN IN ME was no easy task for Shania Twain and husband/producer Mutt Lange. With COME ON OVER the sexy vixen of modern country has carved out a bigger niche for herselfthat is sure to please her growing throng of fans. With a huge helping of rock and roll added to her country trimmings, Twain proves her success has been no fluke. As a rule, she goes out of her way to break the traditional Nashville mold. Even her songwriting skills are at the forefront; Shania and Mutt co-wrote all the songs on this collection. Sounding like a disciple of Linda Ronstadt and Tina Turner with a dash of Tanya Tucker, Twain launches into country-club rockers like "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!," "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)," and "Rock This Country!" with a fervor. A guest shot by singer Bryan White adds a touch of drama to the powerful "From This Moment On." Top-40 flavored tunes abound on the rest of the disc including "Love Gets Me Every Time," "If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!," and even the country-fied hip-hop of "Honey, I'm Home." Finally, the acoustic ballad "You've Got A Way" adds a soft touch to round out the set. SKU: 1005588

Greatest Hits
Personnel includes: Kenny G (sopranosaxophone); Babyface, Toni Braxton, Michael Bolton, Frank Sinatra, Peabo Bryson, Lenny Williams (vocals); Randy Walker (programming). Producers include: Kenny G, Babyface, Walter Afanasieff, Dan Shea, Michael Bolton. Engineers include: Gordon Lyon, Steve Smart, Gerry Brown. This is one for the time capsule. If future humanoids wish to hear what defined our more delicate natures in this, the turn of the century/millennium period, they could not possibly overlook the ubiquitous Kenny G....the sweet bird of solace bravely winging his way over two decades of hyper-stimulus and inner turmoil. All his greatest hits are here, mostly written and produced by the man himself, and featuring guest spots by fellow legends Tony Braxton and Babyface. These tunes will coddle you into the comfort zone, provided you're not immune to an occasional heartstring tug. May this master of the soprano saxophone reign supreme over his deserved domain, for he has given us the one thing our digitizing, mega-byting, voice-mailing, downsizing, over-taxing era could not provide; peace. Pin Ups [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. PIN UPS is an album of songs originally performed by the Pretty Things, Them, the Yardbirds, Pink Floyd, the Mojos, the Who, the Easybeats, the Merseybeats and the Kinks. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, harmonica, alto & tenor saxophones, Moog synthesizer); Mick Ronson (vocals, guitar, piano); Ken Fordham (baritone saxophone); Mike Garson(acoustic & electric pianos, organ, harpsichord); Trevor Bolder (bass); Aynsley Dunbar (drums); GA MacCormack (background vocals). Recorded at Chateau d'Heurville, France in 1973. Originally released on RCA. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). PIN UPS served as a sort of "how to" guide to David Bowie's career. This all-covers album shed light on his ability to adopt personas and emulate musical genres with amazing speed and diversity. It also showed that Bowie was anticipating a different musical climate for the rest of the decade, signifying a change from what was admired during the 1960s. The psychedelic overtones of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" and the garage rock cynicism of the Easybeats' "Friday On My Mind" perfectly display Bowie's ear for melody and eye for pop-culture posturing. He even tips a hat to his more established influences. The Kinks' "Where Have All The Good Times Gone" sparks his interest as a memory-soaked ballad (a Ray Davies specialty), and with The Who's "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" Bowie admits to not having invented the rock 'n' roll ego. PIN UPS served another suitable purpose for the chameleonic performer, down-playing his other-worldly image by betraying his influences. By presenting Bowie as an actual fan--and not just an image/style manipulator--the album portrayed the singer in a different light, allowing him to loosen up his approach to performing and to step outside the multiple characters he had created for himself. Ween: Dean Ween (vocals, guitar, bass, vocoder); Gene Ween (vocals, bass, keyboards, drum machine). Additional personnel: Andrew Weiss (strings, keyboards, synthesizer, drums); Glen McClelland (piano, keyboards); Dave Dreiwitz (bass); John Freese, Sim Cain (drums). Recorded at the Zion House, Hopewell, New Jersey. Three years after the release of WHITE PEPPER, Weeners Dean and Gene are back with their eighth studio album. Starting with the Motorhead-like charge of "It's Gonna Bea Long Night," it's immediately apparent that recent years of marriage, parenthood, and touring with jam bands (???) haven't mellowed the duo. And though their glue-huffing days are presumably behind them, they're still hitting the prescription drugs with "Zoloft," a spacey pop ode to the calming pills. Rather than crafting weird, mutated songs with pop leanings, Dean and Gene are now largely focused on crafting pop songs with weird, mutated leanings, a subtle yet important distinction that becomes clear on songs such as "Transdermal Celebration," "Tried and True," and "Chocolate Town." Of course, there's still time for a few distorted ditties with warped vocals such as "So Many People in the Neighborhood" and "Happy Colored Marbles," but even these strange little creatures secretly aspire to some minor pop majesty. Sure to please "Boognish" believers and adventurous listeners alike, QUEBEC will sprinkle your day with sunny and stinky pop tunes that you won't easily forget. SKU: 1084645

Photek: Rupert Parkes (vocals, programing). Additional personnel includes: Robert Owens, Simone Simone, Marie-Jose Jongerius (vocals). The erstwhile Rupert Parkes here comes up with a house-flavored CD (save "Terminus" and "Junk"), as the backdrop to what appears to be a dreamy and fluiddiary of reflection, growth, and enlightenment. Enlisting veteran vocalist Robert Owens of Fingers Inc. fame on "Mine to Give" and "Can't Come Down," Photek here attempts to broaden his fan base by applying his expert ear and masterful technical skills to other genres. "Halogen," for instance, is reminiscent of Meat Beat Manifesto, with echoes of an industrial-ambient sound. "Glamourama" returns him to his house and hip-hop roots on the Mo Wax and Op-Art labels, with samples from the film VEDETTE, rich in a sensual Latino texture. "Lost Blue Heaven," a Portishead-BLADERUNNER type trip-hop track with vocalist Simone Simone, is featured in the movie UNTER DEN PALMEN by Photek's Dutch film director wife Miriam Kruishoop, while the track "Under The Palms" provides a soothing finale to this junglist's long-awaited return. Anita O'Day Swings Cole Porter With Billy May
Out of print on cassette on Verve [422 849 266] as of December, 1993. Personnel includes: Anita O'Day (vocals); Jimmy Giuffre (arranger, reeds); Ralph Burns (arranger, piano); Bill Holman, Billy May (arranger); Charlie Kennedy (alto saxophone); Bill Perkins, Richie Kamuca, Budd Johnson (tenor saxophone); Jack Nimitz (baritone saxophone); Lee Katzman, Jack Sheldon, Al Porcino, Ray Triscari, Conte Condoli, Stu Williamson, Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Frank Rosilino Milt Bernhart, Llyod Elliot, Si Zetner, Joe Howard, Bob Edmondson (trombone); Kenny Shroyer (bass trombone); Alan Pollan (tuba); Jimmy Rowles, Paul Smith, Lou Levy, Arnold Ross (piano); Barney Kessel, Al Hendrickson, Tal Farlow (guitar); Joe Mondragon, Buddy Clark, Al McKibbon, Leroy Vinnegar (bass); Alvin Stoller, Lawrence Marable, Mel Lewis, Jackie Mills (drums). Producer: Norman Granz. Compilation producer: Will Friedwald. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio. For more than a half-century, Anita O'Day has been the most adventurous jazz singer of them all. ThoughBetty Carter may have bent more notes or stretched more vowels, it is O'Day who has always gone out on a musical limb no matter what the context. The woman more or less invented the abstract vocal style during her mid-'40s stint with Stan Kenton and when she first came to notice with Gene Krupa. And she hasn't looked back since. Of course, the risk in never playing safe is that you are bound to fail often. An Anita O'Day album can be quite an erratic affair. Happily, this lively Cole Porter set from 1959, featuring Billy May's fresh-sounding, hard-swinging arrangements, is one musical gamble that pays off. To listen to the singer expertly skirting the melody on "Night and Day" or skipping lightly through "Love For Sale," all the while respecting Porter's famous words, is truly exhilarating. The collection also includes O'Day's brilliant 1955 selection "You're the Top," in which she delightfully rewrites Porter's second verse as a swinging tribute to jazz itself. SKU: 1011776

Devotional Songs
Although the Kahn family had been developing a mastery of Qawwali (the singing of the devotional music of Islam) for over 600 years, Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn originally had no intention of following the family tradition. It was a recurring dream--in which he was performing at a famous Muslim shrine at Ajmer, India--that finally convinced Nusrat to take up the study. Astonishingly, his dream came true in 1979. While visiting the same temple as a pilgrim, he was invited inside to sing. Nusrat was the first Qawwal ever to receive this honor. Upon hearing Kahn's astonishingly elastic and superhuman voice, neither this story nor the artist's subsequent rise to international success seems unbelievable. DEVOTIONAL AND LOVE SONGS combines traditional religious songs with sensuous secular songs about love. Backed by a chorus of singers and accompanied by tabla, harmonium, and mandolin, Kahn's singing conveys ecstatic power on each track. He casts loops and nets into the ether as if he is trying to capture heaven. This music is as meditative, energetic, and deeply spiritual as one might expect. But its sheer melodicism and accessibility may surprise the uninitiated. An excellent example of arare, beautiful, and deservedly sacred music. SKU: 1006015

Factory Showroom
They Might Be Giants: John Flansburgh (vocals, guitar); John Linnell (vocals, keyboards, horns); Eric Schermerhorn (guitar); Graham Maby (bass); Brian Doherty (drums). Producers include: Pat Dillett, They Might Be Giants. The boys from Brooklyn, New York are back, and they've brought their friends. FACTORY SHOWROOM is the second of They Might Be Giants' six albums to feature a full band, and it's their most satisfying effort in some time. TMBG masterminds John Flansburgh and John Linnell possess the uncanny ability to compose devilishly infectious songs about the most arcane subjects, a skill they employ to wonderful effect on this album. Topics range from the rock fan's dilemma of "XTC vs. Adam Ant" to the political history lesson of "James K. Polk" and the graveyard humor of "Exquisite Dead Guy." On FACTORY SHOWROOM, the two Johns let their loopy imaginations run wild without ever losing focus of their songs, resulting in a collection whose compositional strength is more than equal to its novelty. TMBG also give the lo-fi crowd a run for their money with "I CanHear You," which was recorded onto an authentic wax cylinder at the Edison Laboratory in New Jersey. It's only fitting for They Might Be Giants to keep ahead of the pack by stepping into the past. From start to finish, FACTORY SHOWROOM is timelessly intelligent and entertaining. SKU: 1004600

Trust No One
Personnel includes: Dave Navarro (vocals, acoustic, electric & baritone guitars, bass, synthesizer); Holly Palmer (vocals); Rich Costey (guitar, keyboards, vibraphone, programming); Jon Brion (guitar, bass, background vocals); Eugene (strings); Brendan O'Brien (bass, keyboards); Mike Elizondo, Twiggy Ramirez (bass); Matt Chamberlin, Chad Smith, Stephen Perkins, Roy Mayorga (drums); DJ Numark (programming); Pinky Villandry, Monet Mazur (background vocals). Producers: Rich Costey, Andrew Slater, Dave Navarro, DJ Numark, Danny Saber. Engineers include: Rich Costey, Mark Plati, Dave Shiffman. Unlike the self-indulgent outings of Chili Pepper John Frusciante (yet another '90s alt-rock guitar hero), Dave Navarro's long-awaited solo bow TRUST NO ONE is a melodically rich affair that finds him putting six-string heroics on the backburner. Instead, smooth singing, a smattering of dance beats (courtesy of guest programmers DJ Numark and Danny Saber), and songs overflowing with moody ambiance are more the rule of thumb. When this alt-rock icon isn't wielding Arabic flourishes throughout the scorched-earth intensity of "Rexall" and less intense "Not For Nothing," he abruptly shifts gears into a more melancholy mood that coats the cynicism of "Sunny Day." Songs like "Mourning Son,""Very Little Daylight," and "Slow Motion Sickness" may serve as a mirror for Navarro's troubled inner conflicts, but he deftly avoids getting mired in any kind of melancholy. Instead, more robust numbers like the rumbling "Everything" (featuring Marilyn Manson bass player Twiggy Ramirez) and a faithful cover of the Velvet Underground's "Venus In Furs" allow Navarro to flex his musical muscle. Overall, TRUST NO ONE is a solid outing that takes Dave Navarro out of the guitar god ghetto. SKU: 1061879

Dub Factor, The
Black Uhuru: Michael Rose, Duckie Simpson, Puma Jones (vocals). Additional personnel: Ranchie McLean, Radcliffe "Dougie" Bryan, Mikey Chung, Barry Reynolds (guitar); Ansell Collins, Robbie Lyn, Keith Stirling (piano); Wally Badarou (synthesizer, vocoder); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums, electronic drums); Sky Juice, Sticky Johnson (percussion). Recorded at Channel One Studio, Kingston, Jamaica and Compass Point Studio, Nassau, Bahamas in 1983. Originally released on Mango (9758). Includes liner notes by David Katz. This is part of Mango's "Reggae Classics" series. Since Black Uhuru is, with the possible exception of the original Wailers, the most famous vocal group in reggae history, a full dub album might seem an odd career choice. But 1983's THE DUB FACTOR is one of the decade's finest dub efforts. With classic reggae voices like those of Michael Rose and Puma Jones at hand, it's no wonder producers/bandleaders Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare use more vocals thanare common in dub. The vocals are treated as accents, or processed beyond recognition (as on the wild "Android Rebellion"). This leaves the focus squarely on Sly and Robbie's staggering bass/drum interplay and on the inventive keyboards of Wally Badarou. His unique synthesizer style has been so widely used and imitated that, by decade's end, it was almost a cliche. THE DUB FACTOR, however, remains as fresh and exciting as it sounded the year of its release. SKU: 1002705

Never Been Kissed
The creators of the soundtrack to Never Been Kissed cleverly broadened its appeal by mixing old, new and extremely diverse pop gems. The inclusion of John Lennon's "Watching The Wheels," and "Don't Worry Baby" by the Beach Boys immediately indicate that this isn't your average pitch for teen niche marketing. The fact that the collection is well-rounded casts the contemporary material in favorable relief, and literate, hook-filled tracks by the likes of Willis ("Standing By") and Block ("Catch A Falling Star")hold up well among the classics. The languid grooves of The Cardigans ("Erase/Rewind"), surreal balladeering from R.E.M. ("At My Most Beautiful") and a freaky booty-mover from kooky Latin ska-heads Ozomatli ("Cumbia de los Muertos") give the set a wonderful breadth and range, while keeping listeners on their toes. Well-chosen and sequenced, the sixteen tracks collected here offer something for almost everyone. SKU: 5010715

Moon Pix
Cat Power: Chan Marshall (vocals, guitar, piano). Additional personnel: Mick Turner (guitar); Belinda Woods (flute); Andrew Entsch (bass); Jim White (drums). Principally recorded at Sing Sing Studios, Melbourne, Australia in January 1998. Somewhere between the narcotic stillness of Mazzy Star and the quiet desperation of Lisa Germano, Cat Power's MOON PIX is a compelling, often powerful album of mostly-acoustic songs delivered in Chan (pronounced "Shawn") Marshall's clear, measured voice. Restraint is key here, although troubling images and a distinct undercurrent of unease percolate through songs like the hypnotic "Cross Bones Style." Elsewhere, the surprising "American Flag" adds a new but not inappropriate trip-hop vibe, and the delicate "He Turns Down" recalls the best work of early-'70s neo-folkies like Judee Sill or Linda Perhacs, complete with trilling, jazz-inflected flute. However it's the almost stark quietude of "Say," with its perfectly appropriate thunderstorm effects rumbling in the distance, which best sums up the small epiphanies of this often beautiful album.
