Spearhead: Michael Franti (vocals, acoustic guitar, vibraphone, bass); Mary Harris (vocals); David James (guitar, bass); Sub Commander Ras I Zulu (flute); Le Le Jamison (keyboards, background vocals); Keith McArthur (bass); James Gray (drums, bass). Additional personnel: Charlie Hunter (guitar, harmonica, clavinet, horns, bass); Mike Tyler (guitar, keyboards, bass); Vernon Reid (guitar); Jay Davidson (saxophone, piano); Joshua Yudkin (organ); Pete Scaturro (organ, piano); Scott Storch (horns, Fender Rhodes electric piano, keyboards); Will Bernard (Fender Rhodes electric piano); E.J. Simpson (bass); Andy Kravitz (drums, percussion), Simone White (drums); Josh Jones (congas). Producers: Michael Franti, Joe "The Butcha" Nicolo. Recorded at Studio 4, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Hollywood Sound Recorders, Los Angeles, California; Ball And Chain Studios and High Street Studios, San Francisco, California. Former Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy singer Michael Franti's second life as the frontman for Spearhead shows that he's got more on his mind than being the hip-hop equivalent of Gil Scott-Heron. While Franti retains the wordy, iconoclastic approach he favored with the Heroes, Spearhead allowshim the freedom to explore different musical avenues. HOME moves deftly from gutbucket funk to progressive R&B to rap, with lyrics that manage to be both personal and political. While dealing with such serious subjects as AIDS ("Positive"), poverty ("Hole In The Bucket") and violence ("Piece O' Peace"), Franti never loses his wry, ironic sense of humor. He leavens his weightier material with clever observations delivered in a deep, soulful voice. Spearhead's HOME is the common ground where contemporary urban styles converge to create a fresh new sound. SKU: 3100160

Metamorphosis
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Hilary Duff (vocals). Producers include: The Matrix, John Shanks, Chico Bennett, Jim Marr, Charlie Midnight. SANTA CLAUS LANE aside, this is the debut album by the ever-perky Hilary Duff, best known for her title role in the LIZZIE MCGUIRE movie and television series. It's appropriate that one of 2003's "it" girls kicks off her first proper collection of tunes with "So Yesterday," a song that celebrates an assertive present and a bright future. Taking cues from her slightly older peers Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch, Duff leans towards catchy pop-rock anthems on tracks such as "Come Clean," "Workin' It Out," and "The Math." However, the blonde teen queen also tries on some mid-tempo electronica ("Little Voice") and slower, more introspective songs ("Where Did I Go Right," "Love Is Just," and "Inner Strength"). Although the precocious 16-year-old is already a successful actress, it appears that Duff's talents extend to pop music, and she's likely to have a promising career both on and off the screen. Heavy Weather
Weather Report: Joe Zawinul (vocals, piano, synthesizer, melodica); Jaco Pastorius (vocals, fretless bass, mando-cello, drums, steel drums); Manolo Bandrena (vocals, percussion); Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Alex Acuna (drums, percussion). Recorded at Devonshire Sound Studios, North Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by John Ephland. Probably the best fusion album ever made, and the coming together of five precociously talented musicians. Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter assembled the unit with little knowledge that the complex music would become so accessible. Two compostions stand out; the graceful 'A Remark You Made', an evocative love song without words, and the hit single 'Birdland' (so successful it was even used by Akai for a major advertising campaign). On these two Zawinul compostions their genius bass player Jaco Pastorius gives a taste ofwhat he was capable of. He bent the notes to make them talk, and that high octave solo on 'Birdland' is still a treasured moment. SKU: 1041626

Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape [PA]
Contains hidden tracks on track numbers 14, 15, and 16. Personnel includes: Me'Shell NdegeOcello, Redman, Tweet, Cato, Talib Kweli, Caron Wheeler, Lalah Hathaway, Marcus Miller, Michael Hampton (Kid Funkadelic). Producers: Cato, Meshell Suhaila Bashir, Supa Dave West. Recorded at Hyde Street Studios, San Francisco, California. COOKIE: THE ANTHROPOLOGICAL ALBUM was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary R&B Album. Me'Shell Ndegeocello's fourth solo outing comes from an artist whose work is nothing short of visionary. Considering that COOKIE was shelved for a period before being released, the set nevertheless sounds as fresh and contemporary as anything currently being pumped out of the urban music scene. Ndegeocello continues her amalgam of bass-driven jazzy R&B, funk, and hip-hop, adding in occasional world music touches (as with the Indian-influenced outro in "Trust"). "Priorities 1-6" smoothly captures a Maxwell vibe, while both "Earth" and "Barry Farms" jam on slinky Prince-like grooves, replete with sexually charged lyrics. As physical as Me'Shell's lyrical focus gets, it holds equal court with social, spiritual, and political statements. In the opening cut, "Dead Nigga Blvd. Pt. 1," she sings, "Just because civil rights is law doesn't mean that we all abide." COOKIE also has an eclectic ensemble of guests. Caron Wheeler lends her soulful voice to the jazzy "Criterion," fellow four-stringer Marcus Miller weighs inon Funkadelic's "Better By The Pound," while the remix of "Pocketbook" boasts a who's who collaboration of heavy hitters including Rockwilder, Tweet, Redman, and Missy Elliot. Joker, The
Steve Miller Band: Steve Miller (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Dickie Thompson (organ, clavinet); Gerald Johnson (bass); John King (drums). Additional personnel: Sneaky Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar); Lonnie Turner (bass). Engineers: Greg McCarthy, Jay Ranellucci. Recorded at Capitol Records, Hollywood, California; Tower Theatre, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; The Aquarius Theatre, Boston, Massachussetts. The tracks "Come On In My Kitchen" and "Evil" were recorded live. Although Steve Miller had been slugging it out since the late 60's, it wasn't until his 1973 release, THE JOKER, that he finally found his niche (radio friendly rock) and hit the big time. Known primarily as a blues rocker beforehand, Miller composed one of rock's grooviest numbers of alltime in the form of the title track, which remains his signature song. But like his next 2 releases (1976's FLY LIKE AN EAGLE and 77's BOOK OF DREAMS), THE JOKER is a solid album from start to finish. The be-bop ditty "Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma," the humorous "Your Cash Ain't Nothin' But Trash," and one of Miller's most underrated compositions ever, "Sugar Babe," are all standouts. SKU: 5059964

INXS
Like AC/DC and Midnight Oil, INXS were born of the Sydney surfer bar scene, a notoriously tough proving ground which required bands to get really good, really fast, and to rock out mightily in the process. Unlike those bands, however, this sextet were young and impressionable enough to be heavily influenced by British new wave and the odd art-rock antics of Australia-by-way-of-New Zealand cult heroes Split Enz. As a result, INXS's 1980 debut is a mildly schizophrenic mix of edgy hard pop and quirky new wave. The best tracks are those which combine the two, such as the brilliant debut single "Just Keep Walking," a two-minute slice of snarling attitude and jagged melody. A few tracks fare slightly less well, but as a whole this is both an interesting slice of '80s new wave and a surprising historical find for INXS neophytes. SKU: 5065031

Out The Box (Live)
Personnel include: Tonex (vocals); Kirk Franklin, Morpheus, Applejaxx, Sheila E., Yolanda Adams. Recording information: San Diego Civic Center, San Diego, California (09/19/2003). Tonex (pronounced "Toe-Nay") gained a reputation as a maverick in the Christian music world with his unorthodox style and his willingness to take chances--his rebellious nature garnered the young singer comparisons to Prince. Tonex's uniqueness is evident on the two-disc live record OUT THE BOX, particularly on his between-song exhortations to the crowd, expressed in of-the-moment, hip-hop-influenced language. It's a fitting connection, as both rap and gospel are based in passion, an emotion fully embraced by Tonex and his R&B-leaning band.As with much spiritual-based music, nowhere is the energy stronger than in a live setting, and this set of performances doesn't disappoint, with more than two hours of sweet praise-oriented songs such as "Make Me Over" and "Believer." OUT THE BOX shows that the most beautiful spirit can come out of breaking with binding traditions. SKU: 6572908

Hundred Year Hall (Live In Frankfurt 26 April 1972)
Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica, organ); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Keith Godchaux (piano); Billy Kreutzmann (drums); Donna Jean Godchaux (background vocals). Recorded live at Jahrhundert Halle, Frankfurt, Germany on April 26, 1972. Includes liner notes by Robert Hunter. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Grateful Dead fans are known for having bootleg tapes of specific concerts. For them, HUNDRED YEAR HALL is simply an excellent-quality version of one of these, released on the band's own label. The concert is a Frankfurt, Germany, performance from April 26, 1972--the middle of one of the band's best tours. Similarities between this 1995 two-CD set and a release from 1972, simply titled EUROPE '72, are inevitable. HUNDRED YEAR HALL is a rawer, more raucous collection, which is to the listener's advantage on "Me and My Uncle," "Playing in the Band" and "Next Time You See Me," and somewhat of a detraction on the usually moodier "China CatSunflower" and "Jack Straw." The second CD boasts the best and worst of the album: the improvised, mind-blowing exploration on "The Other One" (encapsulated in a song titled "Cryptical Envelopment") and Bob Weir forgetting the lyrics to "Truckin'." Just the kind of fire and fizzle Deadheads eat up. SKU: 6579502

For You
Personnel: Prince (vocals, guitars, Arp string ensemble, piano, Clavinet, synthesizer, bass, drums, percussion). Recorded at Record Plant, California. Signed to a hefty record contract while still in his teens, Prince was only 19 when he wrote, produced and played all the instruments (the album's initial press release listed no less than 23) on his first album FOR YOU, a keyboard-dominated dance record that melds funk, soul and disco. While FOR YOU didn't sell as was well as wasexpected, "Soft and Wet" did make the singles chart and the lush ballad "Baby" established that besides writing great dance songs, Prince could sing as well as any of his R&B contemporaries. FOR YOU is a portentous roadmap for the direction Prince and popular music would take in the 1980s. SKU: 5085622

Augmented by the vocal trio of Cath Coffey, Verona Davis and Andrea Groves, CONNECTED is a brave new vision of dance music, as illustrated by the sultry title track, with its swampy rhythmic underpinning, '60s soul jazz punctuations, beefy bass line and its incantory chants, urging on the dancers to greater self-expression, personal responsibility and intellectual curiosity. These social themes run through CONNECTED, augmented by the type of hip Afro funk-jazz mix that distinguished early archetypes of this rap style such as Gil-Scott Heron. SKU: 1006492

Night At The Roxbury, A
Full title: A Night At The Roxbury: Music From The Motion Picture. Producers includes: Dee Dee Halligan, Junior Torello, Bamboo, Robert Clivilles, Cyndi Lauper. "Disco Inferno" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels managed to turn Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan's recurringone-joke skit about two clueless clubheads into a major motion picture. That's why they call him an entrepreneur. More importantly, the soundtrack to said film makes a damn good excuse for a compilation full of surefire club hits whose sights are set squarely on the dance floor. From the inescapable "What Is Love" (Haddaway) to 3rd Party's revamped version of M's '80s hit "Pop Muzik," the A NIGHT AT THE ROXBURY is a non-stop dancefest, full of relentless beats and hooky synth riffs. Guaranteed to fire up even the most lackluster of parties. SKU: 1014930

Venni Vetti Vecci (Clean Version)
Personnel includes: Ja Rule (rap vocals); Erick Sermon (rap vocals, various instruments); DMX, Jay-Z, Memphis Bleek, Case, Tah Murdah, Black Child, Nemesis (rap vocals); Lil' Rob, Tai (various instruments). Producers include: Irv Gotti, Lil' Rob, Tyrone Fyffe, Tai, Self. From the opening "The March Prelude," a ghostly, lugubrious call-and-response number that references field recordings from the beginning of the century, one can tell that VENNI VETTI VECCI is not going to be a picnic in the woods. Slow, grinding beats and ominoushorror-movie keyboard samples provide ballast for Ja Rule's raw-throated delivery as he kicks rhymes about the hardships of street-life and his own prowess as a street thug. Considering the murder threats of "World's Most Dangerous" and the chilling narrative of "The Murderers," Ja Rule doesn't sound like the kind of guy you'd want mad at you. Such cuts as "Race Against Time" and "Only Begotten Son" show the rapper wrestling with existential questions and Christian themes. For the most part, however, there is little here to brighten the dark reality of inner city life. This is hardcore gangta rap of the rawest and most uncompromising nature. SKU: 1005595

Born Again [PA]
Personnel: The Notorious B.I.G., Puff Daddy, Busta Rhymes, Lauryn Hill, DMX, Nas, Method Man, Redman, Lil' Kim, Faith, Too Short, K-Ci, JoJo, Sadat X, Ice Cube, Shyne, G-Dep, Mark Curry, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Hot Boys & Big Timer, Craig Mack, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot, G-Dep, Lil' Cease, Mobb Deep, Joe Hooker, Black Rob, Beanie Sigel, Junior M.A.F.I.A. Producers include: Puff Daddy, Chucky Thompson, Mario Winans, Derek "D Dot" Angelettie, DJ Premier. Engineers include: Roger Che, Michael Patterson, Tom Cassel. Where would Christopher Wallace/Biggie Smallz/Notorious B.I.G. be today had the rap wars not claimed the large (both livin' and size) rapper It's the eternal James Dean question--how much of the myth comes from the tragedy and how much of the tragedy comes from the myth. These questions can never be answered to any satisfaction, though it's only fair to recall that Biggie had sold millions of records and seen the top of Billboard's album and pop singles charts long before he went out bigger than his life. On BORN AGAIN, the whole rap world turns out to pay tribute at this latest reverent, raucous wake. Biggie still eerily fills the center of this rap universe with Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Busta Rhymes, and other luminaries from both coasts and various camps filling in the rhymes around him. Tracks like the Duran Duran-sampled "Notorious B.I.G." and "Dead Wrong" are perfect showcases for Biggie's patented lumbering and relaxed baritone flow. BORN AGAIN proves not whether the man would stand atop the hip-hop hierarchy had he lived, but reveals the amountof love felt for the Notorious B.I.G. and reminds us of what he was capable if only... Supreme
Personnel: Coleman Hawkins (tenor saxophone); Barry Harris (piano); Gene Taylor (bass); Roy Brooks (drums). Recorded live at the Left Bank Jazz Society, Baltimore, Maryland in 1966. Includes liner notes byHans-Jurgen Schaal. Digitally remastered by Wolfgang Meyscheider (Traunwalchen). This 1966 live recording is from the end of Hawkins' career, and was to be his penultimate record. While this recording cannot compare to Hawkins' previous work, strong moments between the members of the rhythm section (Barry Harris on piano, Gene Taylor on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums) makes this an exciting listen. Moreover, despite Hawkins' own sub-par performance, the audience applauds enthusiastically after every chorus he plays, spurning him on to greater heights until, by the album's closer, he performs nearly up to snuff. On the final tune, "Ow," Hawkins trades phrases with Harris displaying a rich and eloquent musical vocabulary. Harris himself plays a particularly inspired solo on the Quincy Jones ballad "Quintessence" and Hawkins' version of "Body & Soul," while not as authoritative as many of his earlier versions, is nonetheless passionate and yearning. For fans of "the Bean," this album, if nothing else, is of great historical interest. SKU: 1009791

So
Personnel includes: Peter Gabriel (vocals, keyboards); Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, Youssou N'Dour (vocals); David Rhodes (guitar, background vocals); Daniel Lanois (guitar, tambourine); Nile Rodgers (guitar); L. Shankar (violin); Mark Rivera (alto, tenor & baritone saxophones); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Don Mikelsen (trombone); Richard Tee (piano); Simon Clark (Hammond B3 organ, synthesizer, bass); Tony Levin (bass, Chapman stick); Larry Klein, Bill Laswell (bass); Manu Katche (drums, talking drums); Jerry Marotta, Stewart Copeland (drums); Chris Hughes (programming); Djalma Correa (surdu, congas, triangle); Jimm Kerr (background vocals). Engineers: Kevin Killen, Daniel Lanois, David Bottrill. Recorded at Ascombe Studios, Bath, England between Feruary & December 1985. SO consolidated Gabriel's reputation as an original and exciting composer, capable of projecting sophisticated lyrics on accessible melodies. 'Sledgehammer' was a massive hit (number one in the USA), as was 'Don't Give Up', with Kate Bush's vocals adding extra pathos. 'This Is The Picture' clearly shows the slightly surreal influence of co-writer Laurie Anderson, and the whole is given flight by Daniel Lanois' impeccable production. The towering achievement, however, is 'Mercy Street', a sparelyorchestrated and perfectly constructed tribute to the late poet Anne Sexton. SKU: 1002532

New Roman Times
Camper Van Beethoven: Jonathan Segel (vocals, guitar, violin, synthesizer); David Lowery (vocals, guitar, piano); David Immergluck (guitar, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, background vocals); Victor Krummenacher (guitar, bass guitar); Greg Lisher (guitar); Chris Pedersen (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Alan Weatherhead (guitar, pedal steel guitar, synthesizer); John Hickman (autoharp, midi, background vocals); William Grishaw (piano, synthesizer); Kenny Margolis (keyboards); Chris Molla (synthesizer); Miguel Urbiztondo (drums, percussion); Ches Smith, Frank Funaro (drums); Lauren Hoffman, Casey Martin, Teddy Blanks, Julia McCauley, Anne Hege, Nina Gates, Darion Arnette (background vocals). Recording information: Sound Of Music, Richmond, Virginia. Camper Van Beethoven's first new effort in 15 years, NEW ROMAN TIMES lives up to the high watermark set by 1988's OUR BELOVED REVOLUTIONARY SWEETHEART and 1989's KEY LIME PIE, the band's most mature and accomplished statements. The stylistic eclecticism that characterized those albums is in full force here with rock ("The Long Plastic Hallway"), Balkan dance ("Sons of the New Golden West"), country ("Militia Song"), experimental prog-rocknoise ("White Fluffy Clouds"), even disco ("Discotheque CVB"). In addition to its appealing, kaleidoscopic sound, NEW ROMAN TIMES boasts some of the group's finest songwriting. An allegory of political crisis in the early 2000s, the record follows the adventures of a young Texan who joins the military, serves in battle, comes home wounded, only to join a militia group and eventually become a terrorist. The narrative contains veiled references to 9/11, the war in Iraq, and the foreign policies of the Bush administration in brilliantly incisive and satirical songs like "Might Makes Right" and "Hey Brother." Always adept at experimental musical statements (on "Come Out," the band remixes minimalist composer Steve Reich's song of the same name), CVB's profound thematic text raises the caliber of their achievement. This album was worth the wait. SKU: 6574152

For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) [Remastered]

Originally released as Atlantic (11111). Includes liner notes by Brad Tolinski. The album went on to sell over a million copies worldwide and the title track became an immediate live favourite, complete with a cannon-fire salute stage show that became instant encore material. Elsewhere, their familiar rattle remained intact, with 'Night Of The Long Knives' and 'Breaking The Rules' forging a familiar piece of metal. SKU: 1082943

Far From Home
Personnel: Steve Winwood (vocals, guitar, keyboards, organ, synthesizer, percussion); Mike Dolan (guitar, programming); Davy Spillane (Uillean pipes); Jim Capaldi (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recorded at Woodstock, Kilcoole, Ireland. The fervent, aching timbre of Steve Winwood's voice is one of the enduring sound signatures in contemporary pop. In reviving his career with such hit albums as ARC OF A DIVER, a new Steve Winwood emerged from the ashes of the old--a smooth R&B crooner and song stylist. And as good as all the subsequent albums have been, something in Winwood yearned for the freedom of his youth. Not as an exercise in nostalgia or as a rejection of his current directions, but to pick up the loose threads of stylistic milestones such as MR. FANTASY, JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE and THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS. FAR FROM HOME finds Winwood going back home with longtime collaborator Jim Capaldi, to the countryside of Southern Ireland, to recapture some of the spontaneous, improvisatory spirit of the early Traffic records. With Capaldi providing lyrics plus drums and percussion, Winwood's talents as a vocalist and instrumentalist are center stage. On arrangements such as the title tune and "Nowhere Is There Freedom," Winwood's richly voiced Hammond organ provides a pulsating carpet of sound for his keening voice, and a launching pad for his emotive (and underrated) electric guitar work. Modern sampling technology even allows him to re-capture the breathy elegance of the late Chris Wood's flute counterpoint. The songs benefit from Winwood's renewed enthusiasmfor traditional forms, such as gospel and blues, and Afro-Cuban music. "State Of Grace" in particular addresses the demons which afflicted Winwood for many years, recounting his sense of loss while counting the blessings that afforded him a second chance. "This Train Won't Stop" finds Winwood returning to his youth, as he reflects on the bitter grind of everday life and again calls for the healing of the spirit. Reading almost like a get well letter to himself, FAR FROM HOME reconciles Winwood's deep spiritual yearnings and jazzy instrumentl skills with the feel-good craftmanship of his pop ascendancy. Live At Carnegie Hall
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Ray Nance (vocals, trumpet, violin); Juan Tizol (vocals, trombone); Adelaide Hall (vocals); Johnny Hodges (soprano & alto saxophones); Harry Carney (alto & baritone saxophones, clarinet); Otto Hardwick (alto saxophone); Jimmy Hamilton, Elbert Williams (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Rex Stewart, Wallace Jones, Harold Baker (trumpet); Joe Nanton, Lawrence Brown (trombone); Fred Guy (guitar); Junior Ranglin (bass); Sonny Greer (drums). Recorded live at Carnegie Hall, New York, New York on December 11, 1943. Includes liner notes by Jeffrey Kruger. The one venue arguably grand enough to present the music of Duke Ellington is Carnegie Hall. This two-disc set of a December 1943 performance is an elegant representation of the most celebrated of American jazz composers and his orchestra. The orchestra, of course, was Ellington's instrument, and its various members made up the instrument's colorful timbre. Memorable performances of Ellington classics like "Take The 'A' Train," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "In a Sentimental Mood," and "Black and Tan Fantasy," plus numerous others, are the meat and potatoes of any Ellington recording, and this collection serves up plenty. Also included are Duke's interpretations of other standards, including Fats Waller's "Honeysuckle Rose" and Gershwin's "Summertime." A receptive Carnegie Hall audience, seemingly approving the grandeur of both performance and atmosphere, gives the music anextra sheen befitting such a prestigious occasion. SKU: 1035818

Delta Meets Detroit, The (Aretha's Blues)
Personnel includes: Aretha Franklin (vocals, piano); Jimmy Johnson, Kenny Burrell, Joe South, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman (guitar); David "Fathead" Newman (alto saxophone); King Curtis, Charlie Chalmers (tenor saxophone); Ernie Royal, Snooky Young (trumpet); Jimmy Cleveland, Urbie Green, Benny Powell (trombone); Junior Mance (piano); Spooner Oldham (electric piano, organ); Tommy Cogbill, Jerry Jemmott (bass); Roger Hawkins (drums); Cissy Houston, Erma Franklin, Carolyn Franklin, Almeda Lattimore, Brenda Bryant, Margaret Branch (background vocals). Producers: Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin. Compilation producer: Norma Edwards. Includes liner notes by Norma Edwards. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). The title may be ARETHA'S BLUES, but this compilationgoes far beyond such a simple designation. This selection of early Atlantic material finds Franklin mixing gospel with the deep soul of her Muscle Shoals back-up crew on tracks like "Today I Sing The Blues." On "Pitiful," she swings with a big band horn arrangement that wouldn't sound out of place on a Ray Charles record. Franklin's passionate singing style easily allows her passage to the deep pathos of the blues. Both Percy Mayfield ("River's Invitation") and B.B. King ("The Thrill Is Gone [From Yesterday's Kiss]") are given their due. She tackles country material such as Willie Nelson's "Night Life" and makes it her own. Even the covers of "You Are My Sunshine" and "Night Time Is The Right Time" easily stand toe-to-toe with Brother Ray's better-known versions. Franklin's gospel roots are never far away as feisty back-up singers and stride piano (often played by Lady Soul herself) make songs such as "Dr. Feelgood (Love Is A Serious Business)" a sanctified affair. Floored Genius Vol.1 (The Best Of Julian Cope)
Full title: Floored Genius: The Best Of Julian Cope And The Teardrop Explodes 1979-1991. Personnel: Julian Cope (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, organ, synthesizer, bass); Steve Lovell (guitar, recorder); Brother Johno (guitar, bass); Donald Ross Skinner (guitar, lute, banjo, piano, organ, omnichord, bass, samples); Troy Tate (guitar, electric sitar); Alan Gill, Michael Finkler, What's Michael Mooney (guitar); Dan Levett (cello); Kate St. John (cor anglais); Terry Bailey, Aak Verkade, Hurricane Smith, Ray Martinez (trumpets); Ziegisch Kidsky (tuba); Double DeHarrison (piano, Clavinet, organ, guitar, Moog); David Balfe (piano, organ, synthesizer, marimba); Jeff Hammer (piano, vibraphone); Ron Fair (piano); Tim Bran (organ); Gorby Scott Butterworth (Moog synthesizer); Danny Thompson (acoustic bass); Rooster Cosby (bass, drums, congas, percussion); J.D. "Chubby" Hassinger (bass, drums, percussion); Alfie Agius, James Eller (bass); Gary Dwyer, Steve Crease, Chris Whitten, Friendship David Palmer (drums); Hugoth Nicolson (tambourine). Producers include: Alan Winstanley, Bill Drummond, David Balfe, Steve Lovell, Ed Stasium. Includes liner notes by Mick Houghton. FLOORED GENIUS is a perfect introduction to the weird, wonderful world of Julian Cope. Spanning Cope's 1979-1982 tenure as the lead singer/bassist of the celebrated UK post-punk group the Teardrop Explodes through his solo PEGGY SUICIDE album, this 20-track collection distils the best of the Teardrop Explodes' three albums and Cope's seven pre-1995 solo outings into one essential collection. The six Teardrop Explodes songs on FLOORED GENIUS find Cope at the peak of his powers. Teardrop made inventive and colorful rock, encompassing everything from the swirling, neo-psychedelia of the UK pop hit "Treason" to the bright, Turtles-like '60s pop of "Passionate Friend." This is one of the great, "lost" bands of the early '80s. Although Cope's solo albums never managed to match the consistency and vision of the Teardrop Explodes, the solo recordings showcased on FLOORED GENIUS easily hold their own against that band's best work. The selections forsake the unfocused whimsy and indulgent experimentation that occasionally weigh down his albums, instead covering such concise, well-crafted songs as the aching psychedelic pop of "Elegant Chaos," the stately ballad "Charlotte Anne," and the garage-rock raver "World Shut Your Mouth." FLOORED GENUIS is a delight from start to finish. SKU: 1001067

Reinventing The Steel
Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Dimebag Darrell (guitar); Rex Brown (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Additional personnel: Kerry King (guitar). Recorded at Chasin JasonStudios, Texas. "Revolution Is My Name" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Whether you like the genre of music Pantera plays or not, you have to give respect to these guys for staying true to form. The group is still churning out the same brand of aggressive metal that their fans have come to expect. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell takes the group into a previously-unexplored melodic realm with his effective use of sound processing on the opening riff of "Hellbound," and "Yesterday Don't Mean Sh**" is a heavy tune with a great guitar riff. "You've Gotta Belong To It" is brutal, with swirling guitar sounds on the bridge and a do-your-own-thing message. The mid-tempo trudge of "Revolution Is My Name" in a fitting musical backdrop to vocalist Phil Anselmo's rally against ignorance and prejudice. "Death Rattle" is a fast, thrashing number sure to inspire many a mosh pit. "We'll Grind That Axe For a Long Time" conveys the band's dedication to metal. Anselmo's screaming vocals, Dimebag's flashy solo and Vinnie Paul's double-bass drum action make "I'll Cast A Shadow" a thunderous album closer. SKU: 1030329

Into The Labrynth
Dead Can Dance: Lisa Gerrardo, Brendan Perry. INTO THE LABYRINTH is either the sixth or seventh Dead Can Dance album, depending upon whether you could the live one or not. It also marks a step back from that live album--there are no flirtations with traditional pop song structures as in tracks like "American Dreaming" and "Don't Fade Away." Instead, DCD has further widened its palate to include more tribal and spiritual pieces (see "Saldek" and "Toward the Within"). The album also contains covers of two relatively recent songs (considering that the band usually favors the 14th and 16th centuries), "The Wind That Shakes the Barley," anIrish protest song written in the mid-1800s and "How Fortunate the Man With None," which was adapted from a piece by 20th-century playwright Bertold Brecht. Standouts from this collection include Lisa Gerrard's majestic vocal turn on "Yulunga (Spirit Dance)," the lush music of "Tell Me About the Forest (You Called Home)," and "The Spider's Stratagem," an oddly lullaby-like track featuring bongos and Lisa Gerrard's voice at its most soothing. INTO THE LABYRINTH is a much more sedate record than Dead Can Dance's previous ones; a record perfectly suited to long, dark afternoons. SKU: 1003733

Eagles
The Eagles: Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon (vocals, guitar); Randy Meisner (vocals, bass); Don Henley (drums). Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, England. Their least commercially successful record still retains qualities that make it one of their best. Their classic reading of Jackson Browne and Glen Frey's 'Take It Easy' never drags, and Henley's sex-charged vocal on 'Witchy Woman' still sounds convincing. Other delights are Leadon and Gene Clark's 'Train Leaves Here This Morning' and Jack Tempchin's memorable 'Peaceful Easy Feeling'. This was rock/country, as opposed to Poco and the Burritos' country/rock. Nothing would be as simple and uncomplicated for the Eagles ever again, and this album retains a great charm and innocence that soon disappeared from their career. A truly stunning debut album. Obscured By Clouds [Remastered]
OBSCURED BY CLOUDS is the soundtrack to the movie of the same name. Directed by Barbet Schroeder and starring Bulle Ogier and Jean Pierre Kalfon, the movie wasoriginally known as "La Vallee". The new repackaging of OBSCURED BY CLOUDS includes an expanded booklet with many rare photos, lyrics and revised front cover artwork. Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (drums). The last in Pink Floyd's series of '70s film-inspired works, OBSCURED BY CLOUDS, like much of the band's music, has a cinematic feel. In retrospect, however, the album sounds like a warm-up for, or even a collection of high quality outtakes from Floyd's next and greatest album, DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. The opening (title) track is the sort of proto-ambient music that Pink Floyd helped pioneer and, with its spooky slide guitar, sounds uncannily like some of Eno's work with U2. After another instrumental, the album takes a more traditional, song-based turn and the next seven tunes cover a dizzyingly diverse array of styles, from stomping, Grand Funk-style hard rock to gentle ballads like "Burning Bridges" (which recalls Hendrix's "Little Wing") and "Stay." "Childhood's End," a funky psychedelic number, sounds like a work-in-progress version of DARK SIDE's "Time." David Gilmour, especially, is in top form on OBSCURED. Whether creating Robert Fripp-esque soundscapes or blistering Clapton-style blues solos, Gilmour always plays for the song, effortlessly walking the thin line between guitar hero and ensemble musician. Throughout, the band weaves a beautiful, yet decidedly un-flashy, tapestry of sound that makes for a subtle, varied and ultimately essential Pink Floyd album. SKU: 1016874
