Paris
The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar); Perry Bamonte (guitar, keyboards); Porl Thompson (guitar); Simon Gallup (bass); Boris Williams (drums). Recorded live at Le Zenith, Paris, France in October 1992. PARIS is the third of a trilogy of recent live recordings by the Cure. Half of the artists' royalties will go to the International Red Cross Fund. While popular wisdom might demand that a band release some token live concert recordings over the course of a career, who but the Cure would decide to release not one, but two concert recordings within the space of a single year? There is a method to Robert Smith's madness, however, and the two albums are different enough to stand on their own and satisfy fans who love the Cure for disparate reasons. PARIS, the first of the two to be released in America, showcases the darker moodier side of the Cure, favoring extended explorations of some of the Cure's most difficult material. With three tracks from SEVENTEEN SECONDS ("At Night", "In Your House", "Play For Today") and twofrom PORNOGRAPHY ("The Figurehead", "One Hundred Years") and the presence of only two semi-"hits" ("Charlotte Sometimes", "Love Song"), PARIS is clearly a treat for the long-time fan. However newcomers should also be welcome to dive into the deep end as well. The Cure has always been more accessible than naysayers would admit and the bouncy lively "Catch" will satisfy both the diehards and the casual listeners. Live, The Cure is always ecumenical. Buffalo Springfield
This 24-track reissue features the album's original track lineup, including "Baby Don't Scold Me," in mono, followed by the more well-known revised lineup, featuring the single "For What It's Worth" in place of "Baby Don't Scold Me," in stereo. Buffalo Springfield: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, piano); Stephen Stills, Richie Furay (vocals, guitar); Bruce Palmer (bass); Dewey Martin (drums). Recorded at Gold-Star Studios and Columbia Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Like the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield were influential in the melding of rock and folk that led to the country-rock sound of the '70s. Neil Young and Stephen Stills were the main singers/songwriters, constantly battling for creative control of the group. From this tempestuous union came melodic rock that ranged from Young's waltz-flavored "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing" and the Beatlesque "Burned" (featuring Young's piano playing) to Stills' muscular guitar style on "Leave," which foreshadowed his subsequent work with Crosby, Stills & Nash. Fame came by way of Stills' "For What It's Worth," a moody song about a cops-versus-kids conflict on Sunset Boulevard. Two turbulent years and two albums later, Buffalo Springfield broke up, but they'd already blazed the trail for their disciples to follow. SKU: 1014287

K&D Sessions, The
Viennese beatsmiths Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister prove themselves to be DJs with a difference on this stellar double-discset. Instead of simply stringing together favorite tunes of the moment, K&D assemble something much more permanent and notable by gathering their own remixes for both well-known artists (Depeche Mode, Bone Thugs 'N Harmony, Roni Size, Bomb The Bass) and European cult acts (Rainer Truby Trio, Count Basic, Knowtoryous, Sofa Surfers, Mama Oliver). The unifying thread can be called the K&D sound--a playfully off-beat and bass-heavy funk so singular that it instantly assimilates any piece of music into the K&D canon. The K&D sound is a great equalizer, elevating all music to a common plateau of funked-up metagroove. Kruder & Dorfmeister see to it that vocal drum-and-bass, shady dub, frazzled big-beat, bouncy hip-hop, and down-tempo slink alike are pumped up with anabolic breakbeats, sizzling jazz breaks, and serpentine basslines. Already indispensable as a compact collection of K&D's rarest mixes, K&D SESSIONS goes one further, giving it up for two breathless hours and redefining the state of the art of trip-hop in the image of its Austrian saviors. ISDN
This is the second edition of ISDN. The first was a limited edition of 10,000 copies that sold out in 3 days. It features a different cover than the original and two newly substituted tracks. Recorded live at Earthbeat Studios, London, England in 1994. Techno meets technology when Future Sound of London brings the noise, live and direct, and an ISDN digital phone link provides the conduit. ISDN is FSOL's third album, compiled in 1994 from European and North American radio feeds. Released on the cusp of theBristol trip-hop revolution/revelation, ISDN finds FSOL moving away from the trance and dance mentality of prior incarnations and toward a synthesis of organic beats and tactile sound-play. Brian Dougans and Garry Cobain, FSOL's electronic brains, present a far less ambient affair than their earlier LIFEFORMS but remain defiant originals. This American edition of ISDN has been resequenced to include a preceding EP, FAR OUT SON OF LUNG AND THE RAMBLINGS OF A MADMAN. Heralding a shift in favor of hip-hop beats (often sampled from obscure antecedents like 23Skidoo) and downtempo cyberjazz, the EP's title track, "Snake Hips," "Amoeba," and "Smokin' Japanese Babe" ballast ISDN's ghost-infested electronics and amorphous, eerie sound constructions ("You're Creeping Me Out," "Appendage," "Dirty Shadows") with a root system of sinister electronic funk. FSOL's luscious, ever-otherworldly textures define such album tracks as "Egypt," "Tired," and the Robert Fripp-derived "A Study of Six Guitars," while "Slider" and "Kai" ensure a fluid transition between ISDN's merging dynamics. One Wish
Personnel includes: Deborah Cox, RL (vocals); Anthony "Shep" Crawford (various instruments, background vocals); Issac Phillips, DJ Quik, Lascelles Stephens, Rodney Jerkens (various instruments); Professor Funk (guitar, bass); Michael Thompson, Robert Bacon, Robbie Nevil, Kevi-Kev (guitar); Mike Mason (strings); Vance Taylor (piano); Mac Quayle (keyboards, programming); Khris Kellows, Kenneth Crouch, David Foster (keyboards); Ronnie Garrett (bass); Daryl Simmons (keyboard & drum programming); Simon Franglen (Synclavier programming); Scott Meeder, William Thomas (drum programming); Gordon Chambers, Gale Canada, Kim Cooper, Naomi Canada Fennell. M. Jordan, Tyren Perry, Pamela Major (background vocals). Producers include: Stevie J., Anthony "Shep" Crawford, Daryl Simmons, David Foster, Rodney Jerkins. Engineers include: Ted Wohlson, Bob Brown, Larry Funk. In as crowded a field as late-'90s R&B, you've got to have something that makes you stand out from the pack if you want to make a name for yourself. On ONE WISH, Deborah Cox makes it plain that she's addressed this issue with little difficulty. Not that Cox offers us some bold redefinition of her chosen genre; the songs on ONE WISH address the timeless topic of romance almost exclusively, and the production is on par with that of most other R&B acts. What sets Cox apart is that indefinable quality all great singers possess; a combination of emotional commitment, technical facility andpure inspiration. ONE WISH is full of wistful ballads laced with florid acoustic guitar filigrees and gentle string synth washes. Over this delicate backdrop, Cox lays her smooth but communicative voice, making every song seem like an intimate conversation. SKU: 1000434

Forrest Gump
Minidisc is available on Sony (66329). NOTES: "I'm Forrest...Forrest Gump (The Feather Theme)" ("Forrest Gump Suite" by Alan Silvestri) was nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Digitally remastered by Dave Donnelly (DNA Mastering, Studio City, California). Not since THE BIG CHILL has America been as captivated by a soundtrack as it has by FORREST GUMP. WhileTHE BIG CHILL was more or less Motown-era songs geared towards baby-boomers, FORREST GUMP is a musical time machine spaced out over two discs. Opening with Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog," this aural odyssey ends with Bob Seger's "Against The Wind" followed by composer Alan Silvestri's instrumental "Forrest Gump Suite." In between, a host of popular genres are represented from the roughly thirty year span covered in the film. On the first disc there's rockabilly (Duane Eddy), Motown (The Four Tops), folk (Joan Baez), soul (Aretha Franklin), surf music (The Beach Boys), and pop (Jackie De Shannon). The second disc continues with protest music (Jefferson Airplane), more Motown (The Supremes), southern rock (Lynyrd Skynyrd), easy listening (B.J. Thomas), and country (Willie Nelson). This collection is tailor-made for the random button or a CD changer at any party. SKU: 1000930

Yellow Shark, The
THE YELLOW SHARK consists of Frank Zappa compositions commissioned by the German orchestra Modern Ensemble in September 1992. The tracks included here are Zappa's reconstructions of these pieces, as well as early tracks and more recent songs. Personnel: Frank Zappa (spoken vocals, conductor). Ensemble Modern includes: Peter Rundel (conductor, violin); Hilary Stuart (spoken vocals, viola); Herman Kretzschmar (spoken vocals, piano, harpsichord, celeste); Jurgen Ruck (guitar, banjo); Claudia Sack (violin); Friedemann Dahn (violincello); Ueli Wiget (harp, piano, harpsichord, celeste); Wolfgang Stryi (bass & contrabass clarinets, tenor saxophone); Catherine Milliken (oboe, English horn, didgeridoo); William Formann, Michael Gross (trumpet, flugelhorn, piccolo trumpet, cornet); Michael Svoboda (trombone, euphonium, didgeridoo, alphorn); Uwe Dierksen (trombone, soprano trombone); Stefan Dohr (horn); Thomas Fichter (acoustic & electric basses); Rumi Ogawa-Helferich (cymbalom, percussion); Andreas Bottger (percussion). Includes linernotes by Rip Rense, Frank Zappa and Peter Rundel. Frank Zappa was not only a great satirist, an incredible guitarist and eclectic bandleader, he was also one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century. His avant-garde instrumental compositions ranged from the ridiculously absurd to outright masterpieces. On a series of European concerts in 1992, the unique Ensemble Modern performed many of Zappa's works for contemporary orchestra as well as arrangements of some of his instrumental rock pieces and assorted sketches. The recorded result is the magnificent THE YELLOW SHARK. This once-in-a-lifetime event is one of the few chances to hear Zappa's compositional genius performed by an ensemble that could execute such dramatic colors and textures the way FZ intended. The grandeur of the opening "Dog Breath Variations" sets the stage for the ensuing hurricane of sounds. The agitation of "Outrage At Valdez" and the dark string ensemble piece "Times Beach II" are balanced by lighter works like "Be-Bop Tango" and "Pound For A Brown." "Food Gathering In Post-Industrial America, 1992" and "Welcome To The United States" are ingenious combinations of narration and sound effects yielding hilarious results. Finally, the closing "G-Spot Tornado" is a powerful exclamation of Zappa's contemporary compositional design. SKU: 1007319

Boces
Mercury Rev: Jonathan Donahue (vocals, guitar); David Baker (vocals); Grasshopper (guitar); Suzanne Thorpe (bass flute, fife); Dave Fridmann (bass); Jimmy Chambers (drums). Additional personnel: Julie Baker (violin); C. Gavazzi (French horn); J. Burgess (trombone). Mercury Rev plug their amps into the place where dark meets light, write songs incorporating both the grotesque and the sublime and inhabit a sonic world where grand orchestral pop and gothic art-noise bleed into a hard-driving, pan-genre musical nirvana. BOCES, the band's 1993 release, is further proof of the Rev's shimmeringly brilliant recombinant rock aesthetic. From majestic ear-riddles ("Meth Of A Rockette's Kick") toblissful electric grinds ("Bronx Cheer") to discombobulated cartoon worlds of chimes and bells ("Boys Peel Out"), these sound scientists paint with lush warm hues and sudden violent slashes of color. Unexpected, dynamically varied sounds and odd instrumentation create textured landscapes that alternately pummel and lull. BOCES bears traces of Pink Floyd, the Velvet Underground, the Beatles, the energy and love of discord that characterizes a good deal of indie punk, as well as the epic sense of sound construction of contemporary acts like Sonic Youth, Pavement and My Bloody Valentine. Ultimately, however, Mercury Rev sounds like no else, and this beautiful amalgam of humor, melodicism and left-field experimentation comes highly recommended. SKU: 1017145

Music For Films
Personnel: Brian Eno; Fred Frith, Robert Fripp, Paul Rudolph (guitar); John Cale (viola); Rhett Davies (trumpet); Rod Melvin (electric piano); Percy Jones, Bill MacCormick (bass); Phil Collins, Dave Mattacks (percussion). Because it was released between 1975's proto-ambient DISCREET MUSIC and 1979's similarly-titled AMBIENT 1: MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS, 1978's MUSIC FOR FILMS is often mistakenly lumped in with Brian Eno's ambient releases. However, while MUSIC FOR FILMS shares some of the facets of Eno's ambient music, particularly in the lack of vocals, the structure of the album precludes its description as an ambient release. While Eno's definition of ambient music focuses on the extended length of pieces and their meditative content, the 18 tracks on MUSIC FOR FILMare very brief--only one reaches four minutes and half are under two--and they cover an appropriately cinematic range of moods, from tranquility to fear. At times, Eno and his collaborators, including Fred Frith, Phil Collins, and John Cale, recall such soundtrack composers as Bernard Herrmann and Nino Rota, but MUSIC FOR FILMS is quintessential Eno. Way To Blue (An Introduction To Nick Drake) [Remastered]
Full title: Way To Blue: An Introduction To Nick Drake. Personnel: Nick Drake (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Richard Thompson (guitar); Clare Lowther (cello); Ray Warleigh (alto saxophone); John Cale (piano, organ); Chris McGregor, Paul Harris (piano); Dave Pegg, Ed Carter, Danny Thompson (bass); Dave Mattacks, Mike Kowalski (drums);Rocki Dzidzornu (congas); Pat Arnold, Doris Troy (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Joe Boyd. WAY TO BLUE: AN INTRODUCTION TO NICK DRAKE is the perfect title for this well-compiled collection that exemplifies the full breadth of Drake's work. From the lush orchestrations of FIVE LEAVES LEFT and BRYTER LAYTER to the sparse acoustic guitar work of PINK MOON and the posthumous TIME OF NO REPLY, WAY TO BLUE features a handful of songs from each album, compiled and sequenced by Drake's friend and producer Joe Boyd. Opening with the gorgeous "Cello Song," the album moves from BRYTER LAYTER's "Hazey Jane I" to the title track, which features Drake's delicate vocals alone over a symphonic swell. Also included are the haunting "River Man," the reflective "One of These Things First," and the melancholy "Time of No Reply," in addition to Drake's most well-known tune, "Pink Moon." Each song presented here (and, in fact, every Nick Drake song) is a testament to his beautifully subdued voice and proficient acoustic guitar playing, offering further evidence of his still-growing influence decades after his death. Second album from Chorley indie band follows 2001's 'Love Is Here'. Stevie Wonder's Greatest Hits Vol.1
Personnel includes: Stevie Wonder. Producers: Henry Cosby, William "Mickey" Stevenson, Hal Davis, Mark Gordon, Berry Gordy. Originally released on Tamla (282). Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (Polygram). Includes liner notes by Scott Regen. Giventhe length of Wonder's career, the fact that this anthology cuts off in 1968 may render the album title something of a misnomer. Still, this does collect Wonder's most entertaining early music, from a time when, like most of the performers at Motown, he was working on an extremely efficient yet amazingly creative artistic assembly line. This is 1960s R&B and soul at its best, from crazed live workouts like "Fingertips 2," to anthems like "Uptight," and "I Was Made to Love Her." The real highlight, however, may be the addictive doo wop of "Contract on Love," featuring a Wonder so youthful that one might mistake him for a girl singer. SKU: 1019830

No Security
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Ronnie Wood (guitar); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Dave Matthews, Taj Mahal (vocals); Andy Snitzer (saxophone, keyboards); Joshua Redman, Bobby Keys (saxophone); Kent Smith (trumpet); Michael Davis (trombone); ChuckLeavell (keyboards); Pierre de Beauport (Wurlitzer piano); Darryl Jones (bass); Johnny Starbuck (shaker); Bernard Fowler, Blondie Chaplin (percussion, background vocals); Lisa Fischer, Leah Wood (background vocals). Engineers include: Ed Cherney, Dave Hewitt, Ulli Poesselt. Principally recorded live at the Arena Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Holland; River Plate, Buenos Aires, Argentina; TWA Dome, St. Lois, Missouri; Zeppelinfeld, Nuremberg, Germany. Despite the fact that the tattooed couple on the cover of NO SECURITY are far more threatening than the Rolling Stones sounded in the late '90s, the World's Greatest Rock And Roll Band still manage to put together an interesting clutch of live performances here, with a couple of surprises thrown in for good measure. On their seventh live album, the Stones avoid the standard greatest hits package expected of most bands of their stature and instead go with an interesting mix of newer songs and old favorites. So you get songs off of 1997's BRIDGES TO BABYLON ("Flip The Switch," "Out Of Control") and 1994's VOODOO LOUNGE ("You Got Me Rocking") as well as 1965's OUT OF OUR HEADS ("The Last Time"). The Stones show off their longevity by having special guests who represent different generations. Thus, you have Taj Mahal playing with them on his "Corinna" 30 years after his appearance in The Rolling Stones Rock 'N' Roll Circus and Dave Matthews joining in on "Memory Motel." The final old-to-new transition comes when young lion Joshua Redman reprises the sax break featured in "Waiting on A Friend" that jazz colossus Sonny Rollins played on the original version. Noel [Remastered]
The 2001 remastered edition of NOEL features 6 bonus tracks and new cover art as well as a replica of the original cover and liner notes. Personnel: Joan Baez (vocals, guitar); Peter Schickele (arranger, conductor). Producer: Maynard Solomon. Reissue producer: Mark Spector. Originally released on Vanguard (79230). Includes original liner notes by Joan Baez and reissue liner notes by Peter Schickele. Digitally remastered by Jeff Zaraya. This is part of Vanguard's Original Master series. An unexpectedly delightful collection of traditional Christmas carols, 1966's NOEL is one of a handful of Joan Baez albums arranged and produced by Peter Schickele--better known as comedic classical performer P.D.Q. Bach--during the mid-'60s. Even more than 1968's baroquely-orchestrated BAPTISM, NOEL sounds more like a Peter Schickele album than a Joan Baez album. Nearly a third of the 17 tracks are instrumentals on whichBaez doesn't even appear, and although her voice is front and center throughout, Schickele's arrangements largely use it as merely another instrument in his ornate arrangements. A German-sung version of "Ave Maria" and a delicate rendering of "Coventry Carol" are particularly beautiful. SKU: 1069150

Ella Swings Gently With Nelson
Compilation producer: Michael Lang. Recorded between 1961 and 1962 in Los Angeles. Includes liner notes by James Gavin and original release liner notes by Benny Green. "It's A Pity To Say Goodnight" and "My One And Only Love" are reissue bonus tracks and are not included on the original release of ELLA SWINGS GENTLY WITH NELSON. Few album titles are as descriptive as ELLA SWINGS GENTLY WITH NELSON. This 1961 date finds both Ella Fitzgerald, fresh from her SONGBOOKS triumphs and an artistically and commercially satisfying partnership with Louis Armstrong, and Nelson Riddle, then the most in-demand arranger in Hollywood for his classic series of albums with Frank Sinatra, at their respective creative peaks. Though it's near-impossible to upstage Fitzgerald, Riddle certainly deserves his co-billing. His arrangements are simply amazing, beautifully lush yet never cloyingly sweet. Fitzgerald, whose collaborations with Armstrong and Duke Ellington show that she always worked best with a creative foil, rises beautifully to the occasion, singing with both exuberance and remarkable control. The program, heavy on classic ballads instead of her more familiar uptempo tunes, gives herless of a showcase for her stunning scat solos, but emphasizes her often-overlooked lower register. Her singing is sexy, sultry and, as always, utterly unique. SKU: 1005520
