I Know
Personnel includes: Luther Vandross,Cassandra Wilson (vocals); Guru (rap vocals); Dean Parks (acoustic guitar); Paul Jackson Jr.(electric guitar); Nick Moroch, Michael Thompson, Ira Siegel, Michael Oakman, Phil Hamilton, Michael Ciro (guitar); Stevie Wonder (harmonica); Kirk Whalum (soprano & tenor saxophones); John Scarpulla (tenor saxophone); Tony Kadleck (trumpet); John Wheeler (trombone); Nat Adderly Jr. (piano, keyboards, bass); Marcus Miller, Byron Miller (keyboards, programming); John "Skip" Anderson (electric piano, keyboards, programming); Rex Rideout, Albert Sterling Menendez (keyboards); Bob James (Fender Rhodes); Gene Perez (bass); Ivan Hampden (drums, percussion, programming); David Isaac (programming). Producers include: Luther Vandross, Tony Moran, Terrence "Tramp Baby" Abney, Marcus Miller, Nat Adderly Jr. Engineers include: Ray Bardani, Dave Saronson, Stan Wallace. I KNOW was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance. "I Know" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. For his first album on Virgin, R&B icon Vandross decided it was time to reinvent his music. That's just what he does on I KNOW, his 14th release. Over the course of this recording, everything from rap to funk to house to jazz turns up in the musical mix, but whatever the flavor of the cut, every track here is 100 percent Luther, as the singer delivers the kind of full-bodied, emotive performances that are his trademark. "Nights in Harlem" is laced with rap and funk, as Vandross engages in a bit of nostalgia, recalling his boyhood. Joined by Cassandra Wilson, Vandross indulges his jazz jones on one of the album's highlights "I'm Only Human." With the help of "Little" Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzales, our man even dips his toe into the waters of house music on the propulsive dance-floor thumper "Are You Using Me?" Long-time Luther fans needn't fear, though; there are still plenty of straight-up R&B tunes around which Vandross can wrap his celebrated tonsils. SKU: 1002319

Family Man
Black Flag: Henry Rollins (vocals); Greg Ginn (guitar); Kira (bass); Bill Stevenson (drums). Sleeved in a controversial Raymond Pettibon drawing of a man with a gun to his temple standing near the dead bodies of his wife and child, FAMILY MAN is possibly the oddest of Black Flag's many releases. Recorded in 1984, as the band was abandoning punk for a sort of jazz- and hardcore-tinged version of heavy metal, the album literally splits the band into two halves. Side one is a collection of unaccompanied poetry readings and spoken-word piecesby Henry Rollins, who at the time was just beginning his long career as a poet/essayist. The pieces are a combination of sociopolitical broadsides, many of which are punctuated with disturbing images, and wry, self-deprecating, and humorous bits of the kind he would continue to explore in his non-musical work in the future. Side two is made up of instrumentals by the rest of Black Flag, drummer Bill Stevenson, bassist Kira Roessler, and guitarist Greg Ginn, whose metal-edged solos dominate the varied-length songs. Trick Of The Tail, A
TRICK OF THE TAIL was Genesis' first LP after the departure of Peter Gabriel. Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion); Steve Hackett (electric & 12-string guitars); Tony Banks (12-string guitar, piano, keyboards); Mike Rutherford (12-string guitar, bass). Engineers: David Hentschel, Nick Haddock Bradford. Recorded at Trident Studios, London, England in October & November 1975. This was Genesis' first album following the departure of vocalist Peter Gabriel. After ascending the heights of conceptual progressive rock on the preceding THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY, Genesis was left between a rock and a hard place, trying to define its identity anew. With the odds against them they put in a fine showing on TRICK OF THE TAIL. The general musical mode is similar to that of LAMB--longish songs with well developed structures and arrangements and a straighter rock feel than the band's early work. Lyrically, the band didn't attempt to equal Gabriel's conceptual mastery, choosinginstead to tackle discrete subjects on each song; "Squonk" is about a mythical beast, "Entangled" centers around an unpleasant hospital stay. Phil Collins, technically a better vocalist than Gabriel to begin with, steps up admirably as lead singer (he'd already sung lead on a couple of earlier Genesis tunes), but despite the popular myth he didn't take over the band. He receives co-writing credit for only two songs on TRICK OF THE TAIL, an album that's very much a group effort. SKU: 1005928

Pizzarelli, John Chiodini, Lee Ritenour (guitars); Jon Clarke (oboe); Toots Thielemans (harmonica); Everette Harp, Dan Higgins, Michael Brecker (saxophones); Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); George Bohanon (trombone); George Duke (piano, keyboards, vibraphone); Terry Trotter, Mike Lang, Rob Mounsey, Bob James (keyboards); Jim Hughart, Chuck Domanico, David Finck, Chuck Berghoffer, Nathan East, Reggie Hamilton (bass); Harold Jones, Ralph Penland, Chris Parker, John Guerin, John Robinson, Harvey Mason (drums); Bashiri Johnson, Rafael Padilla, Paulinho DaCosta (percussion); Janice Segal (background vocals); Four Play. Producers: Phil Ramone, David Foster, George Duke, Natalie Cole. Engineers: Al Schmitt, David Reitzas, Elliot Scheiner, Erik Zobler. Principally recorded in Los Angeles, California and New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Dick La Palm. "When I Fall In Love" won a 1997 Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. Alan Broadbent, David Foster and Gordon Jenkins' arrangement of "When I Fall In Love" won a 1997 Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement With Accompanying Vocals. STARDUST was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance. And John Clayton, Jr.'s arrangement of "Teach Me Tonight" was also nominated for Best Instrumental Arrangement With Accompanying Vocals. To call STARDUST, Natalie Cole's third collection of pop standards, "timeless" tells only half the story. Once again, recording studio wizardry has enabled Cole to reunite with her famous father for two of the album's 19 tracks. This time the results are noticeably different. Where the 1991 single "Unforgettable" kept Natalie firmly in her father's shadow, "When I Fall In Love" is far more assured--it's Natalie's turn to step into the foreground. Ballads greatly outnumber up-tempo tunes on STARDUST, and Cole has picked a bumper crop. The haunting "There's A Lull In My Life" opens the album perfectly. Cole's Portuguese rendition of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Dindi" demonstrates her ability to convey a song's emotional punch, even when the average listener won't understand a word she sings. And the title tune, perhaps the greatest ballad ever written, takes Cole into hallowed ground, and into the very highest reaches of American female vocalists. SKU: 1001516

Easter [Remastered]
Available on cassette on Arista (8349). NOTES: Patti Smith Group: Patti Smith (vocals, guitar); Lenny Kaye, Ivan Kral (vocals, guitar, bass); Bruce Brody (keyboards, synthesizer); Jay Dee Daugherty (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Richard Sohl, Allen Lanier (keyboards); John Paul Fetta (bass); Andi Ostrowe (percussion). Recorded at The Record Plant, New York, New York and The House Of Music, West Orange, New Jersey. "Rock and roll is the only cultural asset Americahas given the world," declared a young Patti Smith years before she made her own records. Then she made EASTER, which made that asset a little more valuable. EASTER is an essential cultural touchstone. Whereas HORSES was built on poetry and RADIO ETHIOPIA scrapped accessibility for primal cacophony, EASTER was The Patti Smith Group's most approachable package of Smith's vision. As an artist and songwriter, Smith constantly pushed the boundaries of rock's scope: The demented "Space Monkey" builds a visual landscape, "Because The Night" melds pop with literary intention, and "Ghost Dance" transcends all musical genres to become a mantra. Possibly the most powerful track on the album is Smith's epic "Babelogue/Rock N Roll Nigger" segue, where she incorporates Jimi Hendrix, Jesus Christ and Jackson Pollack into a paean to artistic individuality and its inevitable alienation. Penguin Eggs
Until a crippling accident in the '80s, Jones was an integral part of the second British folk revival that included artists like the Oyster Band and Pete Morton. PENGUIN EGGS, his only domestically available recording, shows Jones to be a staunch traditionalist, but he comes off as anythingbut stodgy. Rather, he plumbs the emotional depths of traditional folk songs like "The Drowned Lovers" and "Courting is a Pleasure" for all they're worth. His steady, forceful guitar worked--slightly indebted to Martin Carthy--and his earnest but humble vocal style invest these timeless tunes with just the right touch of modern personality. Though he was never less than faithful to the original spirit of these songs, it's easy to see why he was viewed as a breath of fresh air in the British folk world. SKU: 1001367

Moving Pictures
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, bass, synthesizer); Alex Lifeson (acoustic & electric guitars); Neil Peart (drums, timbales, bells, percussion). Additional personnel: Hugh Syme (keyboards). Recorded at Le Studio, Quebec, Canada in October & November 1980. MOVING PICTURES is the intersection between Rush's '70s art-rock style and their sequencer-laced '80s efforts. An incredible stylistic leap for the band, the songs here incorporate reggae, percolating synth and even a new wave-tinged early '80s pop sensibility. "Tom Sawyer," the ultimate alienated-teen saga, is the album's best known song. "Red Barchetta" picks up where 2112 left off with futuristic, sci fi-oriented lyrics. The instrumental "YYZ" is as farinto straight-up progressive rock as the band had ever ventured. Things get socio-political on the ominous "Witch Hunt," and a Jamaican flavor enlivens "Vital Signs." The increased reliance on synthesizers and sequencers would later become irksome to old school Rush fans, but on MOVING PICTURES, electronics are tastefully applied to further the group's musical vision, making for what just might be their finest batch of songs. Bright Size Life
Personnel: Pat Metheny (electric & 12-string guitars); Jaco Pastorius (bass); Bob Moses (drums). Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in December 1975. Includes liner notes by Gary Burton. BRIGHT SIZE LIFE, his first solo album, is an anomaly in the Pat Metheny discography. Rather than inaugurating a new era in his music, it celebrates the end of another. Of the eight superb arrangements that make up BRIGHT SIZE LIFE, only the gentle ballad "Unity Village" (an overdubbed duet between electric 6- and 12-string guitars) made it to the Pat MethenyGroup repetoire. And yet, some 20 years after documenting the music of his first working group, BRIGHT SIZE LIFE endures as among the finest, freshest trio recordings in the history of jazz. Metheny's enormous lyric gifts were first revealed during a two-year stint as the second guitarist (on electric 12-string, behind Mick Goodrick) in Gary Burton's group, where he developed a powerful rapport with drummer Bob Moses. And like Burton, Metheny's attraction to modern jazz was balanced by a deep feeling for all aspects of cultural Americana; thus, echoes of country music, Presbyterian hymn books and the blues resonate in the title tune and "Omaha Celebration." But it is the near-telepathic empathy between Metheny and fretless bass guitar innovator Jaco Pastorious that defines the creative tension on BRIGHT SIZE LIFE. With powerhouse drummer Moses providing a fluid cymbal-inflected polyrhythmic underpinning, the yin and yang of these two string players meld into one greater voice. On "Missouri Uncompromised" and "Round Trip/Broadway Blues" their collective interplay at exuberant swing tempos is phenomenal, as Pastorious instinctively rounds out every Metheny phrase with elegant contrapuntal figures. Yet for all his melodic revelry, Pastorious and Moses never stop grooving or drop the tempo for a second, and Metheny responds with some remarkably modern guitar notions, equal parts Jim Hall and Ornette Coleman. Still, the trio's finest moments occur on the moody, rhapsodic "Midwestern Nights Dream," where Pastorious' gong-like melodies ring out over Metheny's tolling chords like some spectral spirit of lost youth. Solo performer: John Lee Hooker (vocals, acoustic guitar). Recordedin Detroit, Michigan in April 1959. Originally released on Riverside (838). Includes original release liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. This 1959 recording is just John Lee Hooker, his acoustic guitar and his voice. What's deceptively complex in his enormous body of work is the way he conjures dark moods and hypnotic rhythms from the simplest of components--sometimes only one or two chords. Hooker has roots in the Mississippi Delta blues, specifically Charlie Patton, and he's the only latter day bluesman with direct ties to that era (he was born in 1920). Whether abetted by a rhythm section or stripped down to basics, Hooker uses modal chords and endlessly snaking grooves. The rhythm of his guitar chugs along hypnotically under his supple voice, which can turn from a plaint to a growl in a flash. This set is both the map to a hidden treasure and the treasure itself. Vertigo
Groove Armada: Tom Findlay, Andy Cato. Additional personnel: Gram'ma Funk, M.A.D., Sophie Barker (vocals); Keeling Lee (guitar); Dominic Betmead (scratches). The Kick Horns: Simon C. Clarke (flute, alto & baritone saxophones); Tim Sanders (tenor saxophone); Roddy Lorimer (trumpet, flugelhorn). Like U.K. contemporaries Faze Action, Groove Armada combines a love for classic disco, funk, and hip-hop with accomplished musicianship. Andy Cato and Tom Findlay supplement their breakbeats, samples, and occasional raps and vocals with bass and trombone. Unusually for a member of a dance music outfit, Yorkshireman Cato played in a brass band as a teenager before becoming a successful jazz musician. VERTIGO has a distinctly "Balearic" quality-eclectically influenced and representing styles from ambient house through hip-hop, disco, and house. "I See You Baby" is fun, exuberant disco, while "Pre 63" is moody, loping funk with some great flute and trumpet playing. The hit single "At the River" is a sumptuous chill-out, its ethereal vocal refrain and washes of brass treating you to an Ibiza sunset. "If Everybody Looked the Same" is an irresistible slice of breakbeat house that, alongside Basement Jaxx, serves to remind that interesting things can still be done with house music. VERTIGO deserves the critical acclaim it has received. The album is variedand sophisticated enough to satisfy even the most discerning of dancefloor dilettantes. SKU: 1031329

Golden Age Of Grotesque, The [PA]
Personnel: Marilyn Manson (vocals, guitar, saxophone, Mellotron, synthesizer, bass, drums, loops); John (guitar, strings, piano); Tim Skold (guitar, accordion, keyboards, synthesizer, bass, programming); MW Gacy (keyboards, synthesizer, loops); Ginger Fish (drums). Producers: Marilyn Manson, Tim Skold, Ben Grosse. Recorded at Doppelherz, The Mix Room, Burbank, California and Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California. Marilyn Manson proudly wears his musical influences on his band's fifth studio album, where the perpetually androgynous singer and company continue their crusade of industrial rock outrage, making nods to forerunners while never losing that which is quintessentially Manson. "mOBSCENE," reeks of ANGEL DUST-era Faith No More. "Para Noir" offers a romantic agenda in grand Manson style, with little chance for radio edit status. "Better Of Two Evils" and "Your Fist And Not Your Mouth" rally with undeniable choruses while "This Is The New Shit" nails a Korn-inflectedgroove. The set's down-tempo title track is built around a haunting piano line, and "(s)AINT" deftly captures the Powerman 5000 style. The album track most likely to get extensive re-mixing is the incredibly catchy "Ka-boom Ka-boom." THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE drops yet another bomb on convention, and Marilyn Manson clearly planned it that way. SKU: 1083330

Big Band
Personnel includes: Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Gil Evans, Joe Lipman (conductor); Dave Lambert Singers (vocals); Murray Williams (alto saxophone, woodwinds); Hank Ross (tenor saxophone, woodwinds); Flip Phillips (tenor saxophone); Danny Bank (baritone saxophone); Jimmy Maxwell, Carl Poole (trumpet); Will Bradley, Lou McGarity, Bart Varsalona (trombone); Junior Collins (French horn); Hal McKusick (clarinet); Tommy Mace (oboe); Manny Thaler (bassoon); Tony Aless, Bernie Leighton, Oscar Peterson, Lou Stein (piano); Freddie Green, Art Ryerson (guitar); Ray Brown, Bob Haggart, Charles Mingus (bass); Don Lamond, Buddy Rich, Max Roach (drums). Producer: Norman Granz. Reissue producer: Ben Young. Recorded in New York, New York on July 5, 1950, January 22 & March 25, 1952 and May 25, 1953. Includes liner notes by Bill Kirchner and Norman Granz. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Universal Music Studios-East). This is part of the Verve Record Master Edition series. Purists may bristle, but Norman Granz's carefully arranged and frankly commercial Charlie Parker projects--such as the famous CHARLIE PARKER WITH STRINGS--are as popular as ever, as evidenced by the release of BIG BAND on the Verve Master Edition series. This set features Parker backed by an ocean of musicians, including a full string session, singers, and a sizable rhythm and brass section with a surprising number of names hidden in it: Oscar Peterson, Freddie Green, Charles Mingus and Max Roach among them. Arrangements by Gil Evans and Joe Lipman provide the large, dramatic, sonic canvas on which Bird paints his masterly phrases. Even given the somewhat alien context, Parker's alto speaks with characteristic eloquence, ranging from plaintive lyricism ("Stella By Starlight") to hard-swinging bopathleticism ("What Is This Thing Called Love?"), all the while supported by a colossal wall of precision, dynamic-jumping musicians. Alternate takes of "Old Folks" and "In The Still Of The Night" will please collectors, while the big band context will allow those adverse to the angular intensities of Parker's small group sessions to appreciate the artist in his finery. Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Dream Theater: James LaBrie (vocals); John Petrucci (guitar, background vocals); Jordan Rudess (keyboards); John Myung (bass); Mike Portnoy (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Howard Portnoy (percussion). Recorded at Bear Tracks Studios and Little Bear Studios, Suffern, New York between March & August 2001. On this, Dream Theater's seventh studio effort, the heavier elements of the band's music come to the forefront. Although the masterful balance of rhythmic interplay, jazzy arrangement, and catchy melodies is ever-present on this two-disc offering, the strong, crunchy guitar sound and powerhouse percussion are pushed more into prominence, helped along by the crystal clear production of drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci. The first disc iscomprised of five tracks, averaging about 10 minutes each and the second disc is a 42-minute opus complete with overture and finale. The length of the songs, rather than being a hindrance, allows for both a sense of completeness and an improvisational element to the tracks, making them fun to listen to. The virtuoso skills of each instrumentalist are shown in running keyboard lines, pounding bass lines, and finger-twisting guitar solos. This mastery is expressed even more through the control heard in the slow, moving moments, especially the disc one closer "Disappear." Vocalist James Labrie solidifies his status as one of progressive metal's finest voices, hammering home strong, mid-range vocal lines with comfort and feeling. Definitely a worthy listening experience. SKU: 1069731

Ramblin'
Personnel: Lucinda Williams (vocals, 12-string guitar); John Grimaudo (6-string guitar). Recorded at Malaco Studios, Jackson, Mississippi in September 1978. Includes liner notes by John Morthland. Originally released on Folkways Records in 1978, Lucinda Williams' debut album consists of nothing but acoustic country blues in the tradition of the Louisiana Delta where the singer/songwriter was raised. Not that Williams had the blues' traditional impoverished upbringing-her father is an academic and a well-regarded poet. RAMBLIN' works, however, because of Williams' obvious mastery of the country blues form and her already impressive instrumental and vocal skills. Williams' voice and 12-string guitar are almost the album's only features, with secondguitarist John Grimaudo adding unobtrusive accompaniment to a handful of tracks. Williams' taste runs to the obscure here. Of these 14 songs, the most familiar to those who aren't blues historians are Hank Williams' "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)" and the gospel mainstay "Great Speckled Bird." The rest are blues classics of varying degrees of obscurity, with no original songs but plenty of passion and soul. An excellent traditional country blues album. SKU: 1015192

Art Of Falling Apart, The [Remastered]
Full title: The Art Of Falling Apart. This 1999 reissue contains bonus tracks not included on the original release. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The title is more than a clever rhyme. The unexpected success of 1982's "Tainted Love" took the duo of singer Marc Almond and keyboardist Dave Ball off guard and seemingly unprepared for its consequences, and while it's perhaps dangerous to read too much into these songs, it's easy to hear that the duo is in the process of disintegrating and would split within the year. Almond's vocals are much more querulous and melodramatic than before, and as Ball's synthesizers move further into cold abstraction, the tension adds a slightly disturbing edge to the music. The sentimental "Where the Heart Is" and "Kitchen Sink Drama" are highlights, but the two bonus tracks, originally included on a bonus 12-inch, are mistakes. The 10-minute "Martin" is repetitive and droning, but it's a masterpiece compared to an excruciating 11-minute medley of Hendrix covers (!!!) that's so godawfulit becomes perversely fascinating. What WERE they thinking? SKU: 1045214

You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol.3
Full title: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 3. Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan (vocals); Ray White, Ike Willis, Steve Vai (guitar); Ian Underwood (alto saxophone, keyboards); Bobby Martin (saxophone, keyboards); Alan Zavod, George Duke, Tommy Mars (keyboards); Scott Thunes (bass); Chad Wackerman (drums); Terry Bozzio (drums); Ed Mann (percussion). Engineers: Bob Stone, Mark Pinske, Kerry McNabb. Disc 1 is mostly DDD with the exception of one ADD song. Disc 2 is mostly ADD with the exception of two DDD songs. Many of the arrangements on YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE, VOL. 3 are collated from edits of Zappa's 1984 band, spliced together with earlier versions of the song by other Zappa ensembles. Family man that he was, Frank Zappa opens this third volume of wide-ranging live performances by introducing guitar-slinger son Dweezil, then fifteen years old, who solos on "Sharleena." This time out the focus is primarily on Frank's '80s bands, with the repertoire also drawing from that era's releases. There's plenty of room given for soloing, with Zappa even splicing into a 1982 performance of "King Kong" a 1971 segment that includes his own guitarfreakout, recorded at London's Rainbow Theater just moments before a wacko bolted onto the stage and threw him into the orchestra pit (landing him in the hospital with broken bones and a long recovery during which he was confined to a wheelchair). Stage announcements and assorted patter continue his documentation of the assorted rigors of life on the road and on the stage itself--at a couple points thrown objects threaten to halt the show.
