Consisting of two lengthy pieces, this 1964 concert captures one of Mingus' finest ensembles doing what they do best. The first piece, "So Long Eric" (named for saxophonist, bass clarinettist and flautist Eric Dolphy who died two months after this recording), is a free-form blues that slows, shifts to double-time, somersaults over itself through themes and changes, before arriving at a section of dreamlike intensity in which Dolphy seems to be channelling otherworldly spirits through hisalto.
The second track, "Meditations" (here called "Praying With Eric"), is a kaleidoscopic Mingus masterwork. Here Mingus shows his inclination toward the classical mode of composition: the pulsing, tribal intro is reminiscent of Stravinsky, Dolphy's flute soars above Mingus's eerie, gorgeous bowed bass, with Jaki Byard's concert piano weaving webs around them both. The piece unfolds in a manic hybrid: blues, swing, violent discord and improvisation which is both playful and astonishingly skillful. The energy of the composition develops almost like a piece of theater: stops, tempo shifts and antiphonal passages create dramatic tension, build to a fever pitch, then dissolve into thin, disparate interwoven instrumental strains. For the ambition and accomplishment of this track alone, TOWN HALL CONCERT merits a recommendation.

Long before the soundtrack to CHARIOTS OF FIRE became an international commercial success, the career of Evangelos Odyssey Papathanassiou, aka Vangelis, was well underway. In the early 1960s, the musician helped form the group Formynx, the most popular Greek band of its day, and then prog-rockers Aphrodite's Child. Later, he moved to London and even briefly considered joining Yes before pursuing a solo career.
THE BEST OF VANGELIS assembles eight tracks from this phase, songs taken from ALBEDO 0.39, SPIRAL, and COSMOS,among others. The songs range from the hyperactive "Bacchanale" to the intergalactic majesty of "Spiral," and Vangelis's starry-eyed, Disney-esque duet with Jon Anderson of Yes, "So Long Ago, So Clear."

Folks familiar with ABBA's singles from their five-yearstranglehold on AM radio in the late-'70s may be surprised by this, the Swedish foursome's 1973 debut. Not only is the title track--a runner-up in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest--the only tune that ever shows up on the group's many anthologies, the other 11 songs show only traces of the compositional maturity, lyrical depth and production flourishes that make ABBA's later work so intoxicating.
Instead, RING RING is a sterling example of early-'70s bubblegum, not really that different from the Partridge Family or Andy Kim. Most surprising may be how many of the songs feature the lead vocals of Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson in addition to (and, in some cases, instead of) Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Faltskog. Whoever is singing, songs like "She's My Kind of Girl" and "Love Isn't Easy" make RING RING a package of pure, chewy pop confections.

In the wake of ZENYATTA MONDATTA's massive success, the Police edged even further away from their earlier reggae leanings, but instead of moving into the mainstream, they continued experimenting with sophisticated textures and exotic rhythms. Sure, there's the archetypal hummable pop hit, which Sting manages to throw in with virtually every album (here it's the romantic, frothy "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic,") but there's more darkness here, both musical and lyrical, than on any previous Police recording.
Sting picks up on thesocial-consciousness thread of ZENYATTA's "Driven to Tears" on several tunes here. From the bleak "Invisible Sun" to the rage-against-the-machine sentiments of "Too Much Information and "Rehumanize Yourself," the lyrics speak of the soul's inability to keep pace with advancing technology and all its pitfalls. It's not all gloom and doom, though, as the propulsive, funky "Demolition Man" and "Hungry for You" attest.

That Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn have rediscovered their roots is obvious from the first chords of RED DIRT ROAD's opening track "You Can't Take the Honky Tonk Out of the Girl." It's down-home country with a little bit of rock & roll, a refreshing lack of Nashville gloss, and an exuberant chorus (one of the background vocalists is Bekka Bramlett, daughter of Delanie & Bonnie, and the album resurrects some of that duo's Southern spirit).

The once-and-future Mod here places a few of his eggs in one basket with this live flutter through his back pages culled from a plethora of European shows from 2001. The songs' origins are helpfully itemized for those who aren't Weller completists, and although there's no attempt at chronological order, DAYS OF SPEED is an intriguing glimpse of his development as a songwriter.
Weller culls a little bit of everything from all over; there's the yearning "English Rose," the coruscating "That's Entertainment," and "Town Called Malice" from his days with the UK's premier second-wave Mod band The Jam. The Soft Machine-era Robert Wyatt cover "Hope for Happiness" is a nice surprise. There are also cuts from the Style Council, but most of the material here comes from his solo output, which is deeper but arguably a little less instantly striking than that of his glory days. Nevertheless, Weller'sstill able to summon the angst that made songs such as the aforementioned "That's Entertainment" so memorable in their portrayal of '70s London life. His anger stands in interesting juxtaposition to Ray Davies's sentimental regret covering similar territory. In its entirety, DAYS OF SPEED is a fascinating overview of a perceptive chronicler of his own, and his nation's, angst.

This is not just a terrific greatest hits package. It's also a revelatory look at the astonishingly rapid development of Ray Charles' music between 1954 (when he signed with Atlantic after a few previous years as a Nat "King" Cole wannabe) and 1960, when he departed for ABC-Paramount for what was at the time one of the biggest advances any artist had ever received.
The distance between the opening "Should've Been Me," a charming, if not particularly memorable piece of journeyman R&B, which Charles sings a la Richard Berry, and the concluding "Just For a Thrill," in which he's recognizably Brother Ray and which pointed the way his music would go in future years, is immense. Much has been made of Mingus' 1960s Workshop sessions. Workshop concerts placed a premium on experimentation and featured a changing roster of musicians, compositions, arrangements and approaches in an informal, yet musically rigorous and highly adventurous atmosphere. RIGHT NOW is a recording of one such concert (taped in San Francisco in 1964 at a club called, oddly enough, the Jazz Workshop) and gives a strong sense of what these events were like.
Including two lengthy pieces: "New Fables" and "Meditation (For A Pair Of Wire Cutters)," the disc captures Mingus exploring, almost in collage-style, improvised musical ideas, radically shifting tempos, passages of fragmented melody, cacophony and tight thematic interactivity. Joined by powerhouse drummer Dannie Richmond, tenor saxman Clifford Jordan (whose fiery solo on "Fables" is particularly noteworthy), pianist Jane Getzand John Handy on alto sax, Mingus covers the bottom (and middle and top) with his extraordinary bass playing. An almost hour-long landscape of sophisticated, exploratory jazz compositions, RIGHT NOW is valuable as both a historical document and a musical adventure.

In 2000, a small wave of British pop bands clearly heavily influenced by Radiohead's brand of anthemic mope rock arose, with Travis, Muse, and Coldplay at the forefront. Coldplay are the most clearly Radiohead-like, compared to the poppier Travis and the more electronic-oriented Muse, and their US debut, the 10-song PARACHUTES, should appeal to any fans of OK COMPUTER or THE BENDS who found KID A too weird for their tastes. (Coldplay even swipe a song title, "Don't Panic," from Douglas Adams, as Radiohead did with "Paranoid Android.)
The soaring yet depressing single "Shiver" is a masterpiece ofswelling emotion, and the fact that the other nine tracks, even the instrumental fragment of a title track, sound like variations on its theme is more a matter of conceptual and musical unity than a lack of ideas. This album deserves the hype it got on release.

On BLACK REIGN, Queen Latifah presents a viable alternative to the trash-talking, violent braggadocio that is the stock in trade of many lesser rappers. While she presents herself as a capable, strong-willed woman unafraid of singing her own praises, she never comes off as egotistical. Her soulful, R&B-inflected voice conveys a genuine warmth. Her lyrics offer intelligent insights into both sociological and personal issues, and most importantly, her beats are strong and her rapping skills are incontestable.

As Nina Persson's velour-smooth vocals prove, LIFE is much sweeter and more profound than simply a box of chocolates. Her gorgeous voice is the perfect complement to the rest of the Cardigans' jazz-tinged, retro sound. Straight outta Sweden, the quintet plays a unique hybrid of confectionated pop and space-age bachelor-lounge music. The lush arrangements are festooned with vibes, horns, bassoons, bells, strings and futuristic synthesizers, leaving one with the incorrect but plausible impression that these intensely creative Scandinavians have kidnapped Burt Bacharach and looted his back catalog. Amazingly, there's not a sample to be found on the entire disc.
