Them Or Us
Personnel: Frank Zappa, Ray White, Ike Willis (vocals, guitar); Bobby Martin (vocals, harmonica, saxophone, keyboards); George Duke (vocals, piano); Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Napoleon Murphy Brock, Moon Zappa, Bob Harris (vocals); Steve Vai, Dweezil Zappa (guitar); Brad Cole (piano); Tommy Mars (keyboards); Scott Thunes (Moog synthesizer, bass); Patrick O'Hearn, Arthur Barrow (bass); Chad Wackerman (drums); Ed Mann (percussion); Roy Estrada, Thana Harris (background vocals). THEM OR US is comparable in many ways to 1981's YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS. They were both double albums later released as a single CD, each featuring a wide variety of styles and containing similar-sounding production (very '80s). If you're a fan of Zappa's thought provoking, impeccably played '80s work, THEM OR US is highly recommended. The album proved to be the last studio recording that actively involved guitarist Steve Vai. Zappa always had a soft spot in his heart for late '50s doo-wop, and he starts the album off with a cover of the golden oldie "The Closer You Are" (which includes an impressive vocal harmony courtesy of Mr. Zappa himself). But not all of THEM OR US is retro--there is plenty of Zappa's trademark musical dementia to go around. "In France" features one of Frank's musical heroes, legendary guitarist Johnny "Guitar" Watson on vocals, and is one of the album's many humorous tracks (along with "Baby, Take Your Teeth Out," "Frogs With Dirty Little Lips," etc.). The best track has to be the guitar duel "Stevie's Spanking," which features Vai and Zappa's son Dweezil trading off impressive guitar lines at the song's end. SKU: 5046780

Genesis (Original Soundtrack)
Original score composed by Ravi Shankar. Personnel: Ravi Shankar (sitar); Kumar Bose, Kamalesh Maitra, Benoit Charvet, Jerry Lipkin, Francois Auboux, Laura Patchen. Recorded at Family Sound Studios, Paris, France. Ravi Shankar is the most respected exponent in India of the sitar'sclassical repertoire, and this soundtrack shows off his compositional abilities. Not traditional Indian music, but influenced heavily by his Indian roots, this music is delivered in short three and four minute pieces (different from the raga format which usually includes extremely long improvisations). "Genesis Theme" is meditative and mystical, using keyboards to supplement the droning of the sitar, while "Variation on the Genesis Theme" uses the melody as a springboard for Shankar's improvisations with tabla player Kumar Bose. Other tracks such as "Bounty Full of Crops" and "Swing" use flutes and Middle Eastern pipes to create a variety of ethereal effects: mood music that brings the listener right into the heart of the Far East. A good introduction to the pleasures of world music, GENESIS is a taste of the wonderful musical concepts and sounds this diverse genre has to offer. SKU: 1081940

All The Young Dudes
In 1973, the members of Mott the Hoople were tired. Island Records had dropped the band after three albums, as sales were lowand audience interest was almost non-existent. But the band had a famous fan in David Bowie, who offered to write them one single to give them a leg up. That single was the chart-topping "All the Young Dudes," a glitter-era wink-wink celebration of male bonding that name-checked chart-toppers T. Rex and repositioned the once-laddish band as glammy, androgynous scenesters. Obviously, an album was called for. Produced by Bowie and opening with a smoking cover of "Sweet Jane" that played a major role in raising public awareness of the Velvet Underground, ALL THE YOUNG DUDES is a brassy, loud, obnoxious--in the best possible sense--rock & roll album. "Sucker" and "One of the Boys" recall the hit, while "Jerkin' Crocus" and "Sea Diver" are as odd as the band's earlier material. An amazing mid-career transformation. SKU: 4124656

Super Hits
As its title suggests, this album is a Reader's Digest version of psychedelic-era blues siren Janis Joplin's stellar but too-brief career. Joplin left behind a pretty skimpy legacy, so SUPER HITS can't help but hit many of the high points. Her definitive version of Kris Kristofferson's "Me & Bobby McGee" is here, showing her gift for spinning a narrative yarn. The pleading, wailing blues and soul of "Piece of My Heart" and "Cry Baby" demonstrate Joplin investing her entire soul in her performances, pouring every ounce of energy and emotion into the songs. This can't quite be called a definitive compilation, since it omits the tour-de-force "Ball & Chain," but SUPER HITS is a concise look at what made Joplin one of the great voicesof her generation. Masada Vol.1
Masada: John Zorn (alto saxophone); Dave Douglas (trumpet); Greg Cohen (bass); Joey Baron (drums). Recorded at RPM Studios, New York, New York on February 20, 1994. Masada is often referred to as super-experimentalist John Zorn's klezmer group. While Zorn composes all of Masada's music in one of two "Jewish scales" (either a major scale with a second note flat or a minor scale with the fourth note sharp), it otherwise becomes difficult to categorize this unique ensemble. Saxophonist Zorn, trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Greg Cohen, and drummer Joey Baron fuse traditional hard bop, noir-ish atmospherics, Ornette Coleman-style free-improv, beautiful, ghostly melodies, and even Latin rhythmic elements while disguising the whole in klezmer's clothes. Those who know Zorn merely as an avant-noisemaker may be surprised at Masada's accessibility. ALEF, the first in the group's rapidly expanding catalogue of albums, is one of the group's friendlier entry points. Tracks as wonderfully infectious as "Tzofeh," as hauntingly lovely as "Ashnah," and as slyly groovy as "Tahah" will appeal to straight-ahead jazz fans as well as enthusiasts of Zorn's other work. As always, Zorn has surrounded himself with masterful and remarkably inventive players, and the superior musicianship and excellent compositions mark this unique musical experience. SKU: 1019127

Bad Girls
Personnel includes: Donna Summer (vocals); Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Paul Jackson, Jr. (guitar); Al Perkins (pedal steel guitar); Gary Herbig (saxophone); Steve Madaio, Jerry Hey (trumpet); Slide Hyde (trombone); Jai Winding (piano); Harold Faltermeyer (keyboards, synthesizer, bass); Bob Gaudio (bass); Keith Forsey (drums, percussion). Recorded at Rusk Sound Studio, Los Angeles, California. Largely regarded as Donna Summer's rock & roll album, thanks to some hot guitars mixed in with the synthesizers, 1979's BAD GIRLS mostly sounds like an indication of the way mainstream pop music would sound in the 1980s. It's hard to imagine Michael Jackson's THRILLER, David Bowie's LET'S DANCE or Madonna's LIKE A VIRGIN without this punchy and enormously successful blend of dancefloor heat, rock & roll cool, and smart pop songwriting. Starting off with the killer one-two punch of "Hot Stuff" and the title track--possibly Summer's two best songs ever--the rest of the 70-minute-plus CD (originally a double album) features a handful of exceptional, dramatic ballads and some pure dance music in the mode of earlier hits like "I Feel Love." Thoughthe songs are still lengthy, the arrangements are tighter and poppier than before. BAD GIRLS is a disco-rock classic. SKU: 4134455

Into The Fire
Personnel: Bryan Adams (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); Keith Scott (guitar, background vocals); Jim Vallance (piano, synthesizer, percussion); Dave Pickell (piano); Tom Mandel (organ, keyboards); Robbie King (organ); Ian Stanley (keyboards); Dave Taylor (bass); Mickey Curry (drums). Recorded at Cliffhanger Studios, Vancouver, Canada. When he released INTO THE FIRE, Bryan Adams was an established and extremely successful rock & roller. Styles had changed overthe decade, but Adams's brand of melodic hard rock was still very much in vogue, and even flourishing, as bands from Guns & Roses and Aerosmith to the so-called hair-metal bands made the power ballad a genre unto itself. Teaming up with longtime producer Bob Clearmountain and songwriting partner Jim Vallance, Adams sticks with this approach. Clearmountain brings his trademark ultra-clear, '80s-style production to the proceedings, especially evident on the gleaming title track. And the songs continue to mine the basic rock idiom. Yet Adams shows a desire to evolve. He looks at the lives of the working class a la Bruce Springsteen on "Another Day" and "Rebel," while "Remembrance Day" is a homage to World War Two soldiers. He even addresses Native American issues in "Native Son." Although the record doesn't feature what could be called a signature Bryan Adams song, the collection offers what any Bryan Adams record has: big drums, big guitars, lots of strong and memorable hooks, and that voice. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, The
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's first full-length album hints at the great sound it would develop over the nextfew years as the alternative set's blues band of choice. On THE JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION, a frenetic mix of low-fi blues originals and earthy garage-punk tunes, one can hear Spencer and his cohorts experimenting with new sounds. Judah Bauer's guitar work betrays the influence of both Gang of Four and Motorhead, while Jon Spencer's wails recall a bad Elvis impersonator on one tune, and Screaming Jay Hawkins on another. The energy remains high throughout the 20 tracks presented here, capturing the excitement of the Blues Explosion's live show like no other record in their discography. Production values on THE JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION are simple yet effective; the tone is low-fi yet clear, with more aurally-friendly wide ranging frequencies than a typical PUSSY GALORE record, making this experimental foray into new musical territory as pleasurable as possible. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me Vol.1
Full title: Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me: Music From The Motion Picture. Compilation producers: Danny Bramson, Guy Oseary. "American Woman" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. "Beautiful Stranger" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME: MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for BestSoundtrack Album. "Beautiful Stranger" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Espionage" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. The first Austin Powers soundtrack was a regular Carnaby Street lovefest of kitsch and kisses, complete with goofy and thoroughly groovy obscurities from Edwyn Collins and the Wondermints, plus the happy inclusion of Brasil '66, Quincy Jones, and several classics pulled from the shaggadelic Burt Bacharach oeuvre. But Hollywood loves a success story and the soundtrack to the highly touted sequel is chock-full of starpower. Though it's not the same stoned soul picnic as the original, there are gems. Madonna lets loose with the terrific psychedelic pop frug "Beautiful Stranger"--her most cheerful and cheesy song since 1989's "Cherish." Green Day slams gleefully into "Peter Gunn"-style twangy guitar grooves with the instrumental "Espionage." Burt Bacharach returns with Elvis Costello in tow for a remake of "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" and R.E.M.'s cover of Tommy James' "Draggin' The Line" retains the sexy drawl of the original. As for Lenny Kravitz and Scary Spice Mel G., let's just say they must dress damn well in the video versions of their cover-song contributions, "American Woman" and "Word Up." Not quite music to shag by, but THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME is a decent, albeit dentally impaired, summer frolic. REVEIWS: Rolling Stone (6/24/99, p.64) - 3 out of 5 - "Like Austin Powers himself, this soundtrack of Nineties artists gettin' jiggy with the Sixties is a colorful anachronism that's part inspiration, part unrepentant kitsch..." Somethin' For The People: Cat Daddy (vocals, programming); Fuzzy (vocals); Sauce (various instruments, programming). Additional personnel includes: Eric Benet (vocals); Xzibit, Diablo, Shaunta Montgomery, Luke, Tash (rap vocals); Monica Calhoun (spoken vocals); Arvel McClinton (guitar, keyboards, bass, programming); Kenya Baker (guitar); Armando Colon (keyboards, programming); Leslie Butler (keyboards); Bud'da (programming); Trina, Tamara, Meachie Man (background vocals). Producers: Armando Colon, Somethin' For The People, Arvel McClinton, Kenya Baker. Engineers include: Cat Daddy, Kenya Baker, Sauce. Recorded at The Trakhouse, Chino Hills,California. The ISSUES that hip-hop crossover trio Somethin' For The People addresses on its third album are not sociopolitical in nature--we're not talking Public Enemy or NWA here. Rather, these songs deal mostly with the eternal subject of the dynamics between men and women. Having been around the block a few times and achieving a measure of success has added a particular slant to the group's views on such matters. Several songs focus on the way that money and fame act as aphrodisiacs, and how women who wouldn't look at you when you were nobody are knocking down your door when you're on top of the world. To its credit, SFTP approaches these topics with light-heartedness and good humor. The hook-laden R&B touches that adorn the tunes and account for the group's mainstream accessibility also help the medicine to go down easily. SKU: 1033500

Astro Lounge
Smash Mouth: Greg Camp (vocals, guitar); Paul DeLisle (vocals, bass); Steve Harwell (vocals); Kevin Coleman (drums). Additional personnel: D.J. Homicide; John Gove (trombone); Eric Valentine (keyboards, vibraphone); Michael Klooster (keyboards); Dana Pfeifer (xylophone). Recorded at HOS, Redwood City, California. "All Star" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. When Smash Mouth hit with the impossibly catchy "Walking on the Sun," many dismissed them as a one-hit wonder, but ASTRO LOUNGE finds the band bidding for a longevity that belies flash-in-the-pan accusations. Raspy, Richard Butler-ish vocals ride roughshod over carefully arranged but driving alt-rock. The fuzzed-out riff, syncopated beat, and '60s organ of "Diggin' Your Scene" are slightlyreminiscent of the aforementioned monster hit, but that's just because those are some of the most significant weapons in the band's arsenal. '90s electronic touches, loops and samples brush up against those '60s influences with surprising success, and there's even a bit of late-'70s/early-'80s new wave thrown into the mix for good measure. It's all held together by inventive production and consistently solid, catchy songwriting. SKU: 1017725

Nice, The [Remastered]
The Nice: Keith Emerson (keyboards); Lee Jackson, Davey O'List, Brian Davison. Though the Nice are most famous as the starting point for keyboard whiz Keith Emerson before he came to fame with ELP, many among the cognoscenti insist that they were superior to those aforementioned prog-rock giants. Like ELP, the Nice was a power trio with the focus squarely on Emerson's virtuoso abilities, and it aimed at a similar fusion of rock and classical music. However, as evidenced by THE NICE, its third album, the band had much more roughage in its sound. It incorporates a fair amount of hard-edged psychedelia into its style, and in the pre-synthesizer '60s, Emerson spends his time playing the Hendrix of the Hammond, coaxing all manner of ungodly sounds from it.Like many of their contemporaries, they occasionally adapt the songs of then-current songwriters; Tim Hardin's "Hang Onto a Dream" is beautifully redefined here, and on the Fillmore-East-recorded live half of the album, Dylan's "She Belongs to Me" becomes a psych-freakout tour de force.
