Road Rock Vol.1
Neil Young Friends & Relatives: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, piano); Ben Keith (acoustic, electric, lap slide & pedal steel guitars; background vocals); Spooner Oldham (piano, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond B3 organ); Donald "Duck' Dunn (bass); Jim Keltner (drums, percussion); Astrid Young, Pegi Young (background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Chrissie Hynde (vocals, guitar). For his 2000 Silver & Gold Tour, Neil Young assembled an outfit called Friends & Lovers, whose ranks featured long-time collaborator Ben Keith, MG Duck Dunn, Muscle Shoals session god Spooner Oldham, and peripatetic drummer Jim Keltner, with sister Astrid and wife Pegi on harmonies. Young avoids making the album either a live reprisal of his most recent studio album or a de facto greatest hits package by tossing in a number of obscure songs from his set list. Among the chestnuts featured are the jaunty "Walk On" (from the long unavailable ON THE BEACH), and the introspective "Peace of Mind" (originally released on the often overlooked COMES A TIME). For those entranced by Young's grinding improvisation, there is a nearly 20-minute version of the gloriously swirling "Cowgirl in the Sand" and an epic "Words (Between the Lines of Age)" given a ghostly edge by Keith's ethereal sounding pedal steel. The jamming slows down just enough for Young to shift into lovelorn gear on the previously unreleased lament "Fool For Your Love." Wrapping thingsup is an ominously chugging "Tonight's the Night," and an incendiary reading of "All Along the Watchtower," featuring opening act and long-time fan Chrissie Hynde. SKU: 1048679

Secondhand Daylight
Magazine includes: Howard Devoto. 1979's SECONDHAND DAYLIGHT improves immensely on Magazine's debut, REAL LIFE, by adding greater musical and lyrical variety to what had been a somewhat bleak and monochromatic artistic vision. Perhaps more importantly, Colin Thurston's production is notably cleaner than John Leckie's somewhat cluttered and overdramatic sound on the first album. Dave Formula's keyboards are front and center, with John McGeoch's choppy guitar often relegated tofills and rhythm tracks, while Barry Adamson's propulsive yet melodic bass melds with John Doyle's somewhat hyperactive drumming to add a new level of tension to singer Howard Devoto's emotional yet ambiguous lyrics. The opening "Feed the Enemy" is outstanding, one of the band's very best tracks, and while some of the album doesn't match its power, SECONDHAND DAYLIGHT is an outstanding example of British post-punk. Police And Thieves
Recorded at Black Art Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. Includes liner notes by Brian Blevins and David Katz. Junior Murvin, along with co-writer/producer Lee Perry, created a certifiable reggae classic in "Police and Thieves." Covered by The Clash and symbolic of its time (the mid-1970s) musically and politically, the song is the centerpiece of an album considered by reggae fans to be one of the greatest albums of the genre. Murvin sings powerful, intense lyrics with a sweet-sounding falsetto voice (recalling Smokey Robinson), while Lee Perry frames the songs with dark, almost haunted tempos, sharp guitar work and seeminglybottomless reverb. Murvin mixes British/Jamaican angst and fury with gospel fervor, and the tunes stick with you long after the CD stops. SKU: 1083804

Avant Hard
If you ever doubted the lascivious intent of Sheffield's Add N To X, the title of their third album lays it out explicitly. Coming ever closer to the ultimate biomechanical coupling of (wo)man and machine, the group verses synthesized seductions in themechanical language of love with ripping theremin warble, live percussion, and atom-age melodies. As evidenced by the video for the fabulously cyber-sleazy single, "Metal Fingers In My Body," which features an animated nymphet and a randy robot doing the deed, it's clear that Add N To X has certain prurient amusements in mind. AVANT HARD trots out one lewd groove after another, with a single-mindedness that makes these cybersexual pursuits entertaining rather than perverse. Add N To X cruises for wares on the streets of "Robot New York" and fantasizes about tantric positions even the Kama Sutra must have overlooked on the aggressive "Buckminster Fuller." The down n' dirty percolations of "Fyuz" suggest that Barry Smith, Ann Shenton, and Steven Claydon all have volumes of POPULAR MECHANICS stashed under their mattresses. What a curious crew. Angel Song
Personnel: Kenny Wheeler (trumpet, flugelhorn); Lee Konitz (saxophone); Bill Frisell (guitar); Dave Holland (bass). Recorded at Power Station, New York, New York in February 1996. This drummer-less quartet recording is a joy from beginning to end. This is a brilliantly matched foursome. Kenny Wheeler has worked with bassist Dave Holland regularly over the decades, with both musicians appearing on numerous titles by each other. His trumpet and flugelhorn play with and around the alto saxophone of Lee Konitz, as they dart around the shimmering architecture of Bill Frisell's guitar (in much the same way that Wheeler's tone soared in and around the piano of Keith Jarrett's on the classic GNU HIGH album from 1976). The absence of percussion, as well as Frisell's presence, give much of this music a folk-like bearing and a feeling of uttertimelessness. Wheeler's writing is deft and always subtle, yielding rich rewards and a strong emotional presence. SKU: 5047337

Head Games [Remastered]
Foreigner: Lou Gramm (vocals); Mick Jones (guitar, piano); Ian McDonald (guitar, keyboards); Al Greenwood (keyboards, synthesizers); Rick Willis (bass); Dennis Elliott (drums). Producers: Roy Thomas Baker, Mick Jones, Ian McDonald. Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Jerry McCulley. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Although Foreigner's third album, 1979's HEAD GAMES, didn't spawn the radio mega-hits that the band's two albums had (1977's self-titled debut and 1978's DOUBLE VISION), it still managedto keep the band's multi-platinum album string in tact. Foreigner managed to survive its first lineup change prior to the album's recording (bassist Ed Gagliardi was replaced by Rick Wills), and churned out another spirited set of arena rock, including gems like "Love on the Telephone," "Dirty White Boy," "The Modern Day," and the title track. HEAD GAMES showed that Foreigner would have no problem retaining its audience as the '80s were ushered in, something that not all '70s rock superstars were able to accomplish. SKU: 1075093

Wild
Erasure: Andy Bell (vocals); Vince Clarke (various instruments). Producers: Gareth Jones, Mark Saunders, Erasure. Widely considered the duo's masterpiece, 1989's WILD! is the album on which Vince Clarke and Andy Bell move away from the sometimes camp Hi-NRG dance pop of earlier releases like WONDERLAND and CRACKERS INTERNATIONAL into a quieter, more complex, and organic sound. Though the 11tracks, including the two versions of "Piano Song" which bookend the album, are still based around Clarke's synthesizers, some songs introduce traditional instruments into the mix in a much less jarring way than the orchestral experiments of 1987's THE TWO RING CIRCUS. "La Gloria" has the same Latinized feel as contemporary singles by the Pet Shop Boys and New Order, thanks to the Spanish resort of Ibiza's then-dominant position as the trendy European club scene. The mock-medieval "Brother and Sister," and "How Many Times," are somber tunes which foreshadow the melancholy of later Erasure albums such as I SAY I SAY I SAY. SKU: 4130720

For Everyman
Personnel: Jackson Browne (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano); David Lindley (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, electric fiddle); Sneaky Pete (pedal steel guitar); Joni Mitchell (electric piano); Rockaday Johnny, Craig Doerge, Bill Payne, David Paich (piano); Michael Utley, Spooner Oldham (organ); Doug Haywood (bass, background vocals); Leland Sklar, Wilton Felder (bass); Micky McGee, Jim Keltner, Gary Mallaber, Russ Kunkel (drums); Don Henley, Glenn Frey, David Crosby, Bonnie Raitt (background vocals). Browne's second album is state of the art early '70s L.A. ruminative singer/songwriter stuff, but in retrospect it's nowhere near as slick or mellow as you might remember. In fact, the combination of Sneaky Pete Kleinow's pealing steel and David Lindley's smudgy psychedelic lead guitar on songs like "Take It Easy" (all but unrecognizable from the Eagles pop version) and "Our Lady of the Well" create a sound that eerily anticipates the '90s alt country rock of the Jayhawks and Golden Smog. Even better, Browne's songwriting was at something of a peak here. Highlights include the poignant "These Days," theamusingly raunchy "Red Neck Friend," and the amusingly chauvinistic "Ready or Not." Hotel (Limited Edition) [Digipak]
Fifth album from perhaps the world's only megastar of electronic music follows 2002's massive-selling'18'. Produced once again in his home, with Moby himself playing almost all the instruments, this remains in much the same vein as 'Play' and '18', but this time features none of the vocal samples which made those records infamous - most of the vocals are his own. This special edition includes a second disc comprised of ambient instrumentals, fittingly titled 'Hotel Ambient'. SKU: 6586990

Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
Spiritualized includes: Jason Pierce. Additional personnel includes: Dr. John, The Balenescu Quartet, London Community Gospel Choir. Engineers include: Darren Allison, Mads Bjerke, Trevor Curwen. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN is Spiritualized's crowning acheivement, a masterpiece of '90s psychedelia that captures the mystery and invention of groups like Pink Floyd and Spirit while sounding thoroughly contemporary. The seeds were sown with Spacemen 3. After J Spaceman defected to form Spiritualized, those seeds were nurtured on the latter's first couple of albums. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN is the full blossoming of Spiritualized's lush, spacey vision. Avid experimentalists from the beginning, the band takes the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach beyond its limits, with strings, horns, a gospel choir, steel guitar, and even Dr. John's piano added to the carefully constructed aural palace of harmony anddissonance. It's that balance of chaos and beauty that makes the songs so special, as unrelenting cavalcades of processed sound give way to ambient soundscapes. Perhaps most importantly, the band's songwriting is at a high point here, with subtle but unforgettable melodies attached to each song, no matter the extent of the sonic explorations. SKU: 1000081
