Kettle Whistle
KETTLE WHISTLE is a collection of previously unreleased Jane's Addiction material along with newly recorded material. Jane's Addiction: Perry Farrell (vocals);Eric Avery (acoustic guitar, bass); Dave Navarro (guitar, bongos); Stephen Perkins (drums). Additional personnel: Maceo Parker (saxophone); Flea (trumpet, bass); Dave Fridmann (keyboards); Kevin Haskins (programming, samples); Christine Cagle (background vocals). Producers: Jane's Addiction, Harry Gregson Williams, Dave Fridmann. Engineers include: Thomas Johnson, Slam Andrews, Dave Fridmann. Recorded between 1986 and 1997. Includes liner notes by Henry Rollins. Jane's Addiction are one of just a handful of bands that can make songs explode into visceral madness. KETTLE WHISTLE draws upon live performances, demos, out-takes, and new tracks to confirm the band's rightful place in the alternative rock pantheon. The live cuts include Perry Farrell's legendary bantering with the crowd while the band pours out some of its most passionate music, including "Three Days," Up The Beach" and "Stop." Much of KETTLE WHISTLE finds Jane's Addiction relapsing into its old hard-core self, with some added electronic effects. The new tracks continue in the Jane's Addiction tradition of tribal drumming and odd time signatures while Farrell's voice and Navarro's guitar beckon us to take a trip with them. Suddenly, the world erupts and electric guitar lava spews forth. Behind it all, Stephen Perkins pounds away at the drums, giving them the percussive force of bolders. KETTLE WHISTLE works as both an introduction to this groundbreaking band and an addition to the canon for hardcore Jane's Addiction fans. SKU: 5064419

Honky Tonk Rock 'n' Roll Piano Man
Contains remixes of material previously available on a Fan Club only LP. Personnel includes: Jerry Lee Lewis (vocals, piano); Kenneth Lovelace (guitar, fiddle); Eddie Jones (guitar); Pete Drake (steel guitar); Harold "Pig" Robbins, David Briggs (keyboards); Bob Moore (acoustic bass); Harold Bradley (electric bass); Buddy Harmon (drums). Recorded between June 4, 1982 and September 1, 1984. Includes liner notes by Dave Travis. After emerging in the late 1950s as one of the most dynamic and original performers in rock and roll, Jerry Lee Lewis was almost sunk by scandal. In subsequent years he battled the bottle and other personal demons. But by 1991, the year he released HONKY TONK ROCK 'N' ROLL PIANO MAN, rock's original wild man was enjoying something of a comeback. He had reemerged into the public consciousness in 1989, when "Great Balls of Fire," a movie based on his tumultuous career, was released. It didn't do well at the box office, but reminded many people of his iconoclastic career. He hadn't changed his formula that much since the days of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On" and "Great Balls of Fire." The 14 songs here were recorded in the 1980s and reassembled and remixed for this release, but they sound timeless, with the percussive piano style, the offhand, Southern-style vocal delivery, and the wildkeyboard solos that make up his signature style. "Teenage Queen," especially, sounds like a hit from his golden era. "My Fingers Do the Talking" is a swaggering, boastful number, while "Daughters of Dixie" and "I Am What I Am" celebrate the Killer's musical roots. SKU: 1014591

Tallulah
The Go-Betweens: Amanda Brown (vocals, guitar, violin, oboe, keyboards); Grant McLennan (vocals, guitar, piano); Robert Forster (vocals, guitar); Robert Vickers (bass, keyboards); Lindy Morrison (drums, programming). Additional personnel: El Tito (flamenco guitar); Audrey Riley (cello); Simon Fisher-Turner, Colin Lloyd-Tucker (background vocals). The fifth Go-Betweens album, TALLULAH (named after film actress Tallulah Bankhead), introduced a fifth member to the band. Violinist Amanda Brown cemented the band's move toward the inclusion of strings that had begun with their last album. With this addition, the interplay between instruments and vocals is even more lush and pretty than ever, even on vaguely unsettling tracks like "The Clarke Sisters." The CD booklet includes a brief history of the record's creation, comments by the band, and some review quotes. Standouts include "Right Here," a pristine pop classic complete with soaring violins, a catchy chorus, and jangling guitars; "I Just Get Caught Out," a rocker propelled along a popping bass line; the beautiful "Bye Bye Pride," one of the band's more spectacular songs that captures a moment so well you can see it ("A white moon appears / Like a hole in the sky / The mangroves go quiet"), and "Hope Then Strife," with its spoken verses and sung choruses punctuated by Lindy Morrision's spare drumming and some gorgeous flamenco guitar. Another Go-Betweens classic, TALLULAH is slightly more accessible than their last record, and is the ideal first album for the uninitiated. SKU: 4113372

Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite
Personnel: Maxwell (vocals); Stuart Matthewman (guitar, saxophone, bass); MUSZE (guitar, keyboards, drums, programming); Wah Wah Watson, H (guitar); Eric Friedlander, Rufus Cappadocia (cello); Kevin Batchelor (trumpet); Vincent Chauncey (French horn); Clark Gayton (trombone); David Gamson (keyboards, programming); Amp Fidler, Federico Pena, Itaal (keyboards); Mike Neal, Gary Foote, Jonathan Maron (bass);Gene Lake, P.M. (drums, programming); Bashiri Johnson, Karl Vanden Bosshe, Gregory Marsh (percussion). Producers: MUSZE, Stuart Matthewman, P.M. Recorded at Electric Lady, RPM, Sorcerer and Chung King, New York, New York; CRC, Chicago, Illinois. MAXWELL'S URBAN HANG SUITE was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. Welcome to Maxwell's, where the groove always flows and love fuels all. Eschewing the slicker tendencies of contemporary R&B, Maxwell joins young turks D'Angelo and Tony Rich in looking back to the aesthetics of '70s soul for inspiration. Opening and closing with instrumentals ("The Urban Theme" and "The Suite Theme"), URBAN HANG SUITE is knee-deep in wah-wah guitar, funky Rhodes piano and lush, atmospheric sounds that evoke silk sheets and champagne. Although Al Green and Marvin Gaye are obvious touchstones, Maxwell avoids vocal theft, instead appropriating the way those singers inextricably meld their music and their sensuality. The breathy quiet-storm sax that closes out "Welcome" is as much a part of the sexual vibe as the sinewy funk and propulsive rhythm of "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)." Oozing with sensuality, URBAN SUITE is a soundtrack for an evening of romance. SKU: 1005068

Originally released on Warner Brothers (3146). Includes liner notes by Robbie Robertson and David Fricke. The Band's farewell concert was lavishly presented on Thanksgiving night, 1976 at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom. Originally released as a three-record, 30-song set, it's been expanded to 54 songs spread over four CDs. The concert presented an overview of their entire body of work, with music from most of their albums. They're joined by a series of guests who are all either peers (Van Morrison, Neil Young) and contemporaries or mentors and wsources of inspiration (Ronnie Hawkins, Muddy Waters). With the exception of Bob Dylan, all of the artists were originally heard performing only one song with accompaniment from the Band. This longer format allows for a further look at what transpired on that night. The live material is also joined by previously unissued studio recordings, including a theme that frames the work as a whole. Additional material also includes a few rehearsal takes, demos for some of the studio tracks, and 15 minutes of jamming with even more guests (Ringo Starr, Stephen Stills). This is not a traditional career overview or hits run-through; rather, it's a celebration of this important ensemble's legacy. SKU: 1071673

Pirates Of The Caribbean - The Curse Of The Black Pearl
Original score composed by Klaus Badelt. An adventure movie in the grandold style, albeit a modern one featuring the quirky talents of Johnny Depp, the 2003 film PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN seems tailor-made for a good old-fashioned orchestral film score. Fortunately, that's just what composer Klaus Badelt gives it. You'll find no pop-group promotional tie-ins here, just plenty of evocative mood music that captures the drama and panoramic vistas of this summer blockbuster. SKU: 1085759

Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul
Full title: The Otis Redding Dictionary Of Soul: Complete& Unbelievable. Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals); Steve Cropper (guitar); Andrew Love, Joe Arnold (tenor saxophone); Floyd Newman (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Booker T. Jones (keyboards, vibraphone, bass); Isaac Hayes (keyboards); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). Recorded in Memphis, Tennessee between May and September, 1966. Originally released on Volt (415). Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). Soul giant Otis Redding crossed over into the pop charts with a version of the Temptations' "My Girl." This album followed that achievement and showed him bringing a wider perspective to R&B. Working in tandem with guitarist Steve Cropper, Redding tore up the blueprints of Beatles songs and standards, making them as much his own as the original songs the pair contributed. Never a subtle singer, Otis possessed a raw intensity, charging the material through the force of his personality. DICTIONARY OF SOUL was the last album issued before the singer's untimely death, the artistic challenges it posed were sadly left unrealized. SKU: 1003092

Singles
The Smiths: Morrissey, Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, Mike Joyce. Producers: John Porter, The Smiths, Johnny Marr, Morrissey, Stephen Street. Released nearly a decade after the band's demise, SINGLES goes some way in demonstrating why The Smiths continue to be the most important band in British pop since the Beatles. The Smiths performed that rare feat of creating something new in pop music. The chemistry between Johnny Marr and Morrissey was as inexplicable as it was irresistible. Marr's amazing guitar playing influenced an entire generation of musicians, making him one of the most desirable players on the scene. Everyone wanted him, and his playing graced albums by The Pretenders (who he actually joined for a while), Bryan Ferry, The The, Talking Heads, and others. Morrissey took the words of the angst ridden and gave them voice. Together they made music far greater than the sum of its parts. This compilation provides a fine entry to their catalogue for the uninitiated. Longtime fans will bereminded of the STRANGEWAYS track "Paint a Vulgar Picture". SKU: 1002103

Tomorrow
Tomorrow: Keith West (vocals);Steve Howe (guitar); Junior [John Wood] (bass); Twink [John Adler] (drums). Aquarian Age: Junior [John Wood] (bass); Twink [John Adler] (drums). Additional personnel: Mark Wirtz (keyboards); Ron Wood (bass); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). Producers: Mark Wirtz, Keith West. Compilation producer: Tim Chacksfield. Includes original liner notes by Roger Fenning and reissue liner notes by Steve Lake. Tomorrow is remembered today mostly as the band guitarist Steve Howe played in before joining Yes. In fact, they were one of the finest British psychedelic groups of the late '60s. On their lone original release, Tomorrow purveys a blend of '60s psych-pop positioned somewhere between Barrett-era Floyd and the Beatles circa REVOLVER. They had melodic smarts aplenty, as evidenced by their hit "My White Bicycle," which sounds like a distant cousin of the Moody Blues' "Ride My See-Saw." From the characterizations of quirky English characters such as "Colonel Brown" to the use of backwards tapes, Eastern modalities, and baroque keyboard touches, TOMORROW hits all the right buttons of vintage psychedelia. Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Al Anderson (guitar); Touter (piano, organ); Aston "Family Man" Barrett (bass); Carlton "Carly" Barrett (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Rita Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt (background vocals). Reissue producers: Bill Levenson, Maxine Stowe. Recorded at Harry J Studios, Kingston, Jamaica and Island Studios, Hammersmith, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Out on his own following the defection of Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh, this album saw Marley utilizing the talents of the I-Threes for the first time. There was still a nod to his past in the inclusion of a cover version of a Wailers tune, "Lively Up Yourself," but elsewhere he revelled in his new found freedom, on "Revolution" and most particularly, "No Woman, No Cry," which has practically become a Jamaican national anthem since its release. If that song had an instantly universal appeal, Rasta themes were also brilliantly conveyed via "Them Belly Full (But We Hungry)" and "Rebel Music (Three O'Clock Roadblock)." Marley had announced himself as one of the greats of modern music. SKU: 1061081

Dead Can Dance
Dead Can Dance: Lisa Gerrard, Brendan Perry (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Carolyn Costin (violin); Gus Ferguson, Martin McCarrick (cello); Simon Hogg, Richard Avison (trombone); James Pinker, Tony Ayers (timpani). On the evidence of this, the band's first record, Dead Can Dance can clearly be seen as a "Goth" group in the vein of Bauhaus, et al. The band's sound here is much more clearly based in the "contemporary"--Dead Can Dance uses traditional song structures, the group's instrumentation is almost entirely synthesized, and co-vocalist Lisa Gerrard's voice rarely gets into the truly ethereal, other-worldly realms that it would on later albums. Perhaps the most surprising single song on the album is "East of Eden." Built on a picked (and heavily echoed) guitar line and a rolling drumpattern, it is probably the only track in the DCD catalogue that can be described as relentlessly perky. Standouts include "The Fatal Impact," which boasts a crystal-clear guitar sound, a scaling base line, and tribal chanting; "Wild in the Woods," which is underscored by a threatening, droning guitar; and "Musica Eternal," a subtle track that clearly indicates the path that the band would eventually follow. The CD appends the group's four-track GARDEN OF THE ARCANE DELIGHTS EP, which shows the first true steps down that path and features Gerrard using her voice startling effect, especially on "Flowers of the Sea." Next Voice You Hear (The Best Of Jackson Browne)
Full title: The Next Voice You Hear: The Best Of Jackson Browne. Personnel includes: Jackson Browne (vocals, guitar, piano, programming); Kevin McCormick (acoustic guitar, bass); David Lindley (electric & slide guitars, viola, tambour); Scott Thurston (guitar, baritone guitar, keyboards, loops); Mike Campbell (electric12-string guitar); T Bone Burnett (guitar, baritone guitar); Rick Vito (guitar, background vocals); Danny Kortchmar, Jorge Strunz (guitar); Jai Winding (harmonium, piano, organ, synthesizer); Craig Doerge (piano, keyboards); David Paich (piano); Doug Haywood (organ, bass, background vocals); Leland Sklar (bass); Russ Kunkel (drums, congas); Mauricio Lewak (drums, surdu); Jim Keltner, Jeff Porcaro, Stan Lynch (drums); Luis Conte (percussion); David Crosby, Graham Nash (background vocals). Producers include: Richard Sanford Orshoff, Jackson Browne, Al Schmitt, John Landau, Greg Ladanyi. Engineers include: John Haeny, Fritz Richmond, Greg Ladanyi, Dennis Kirk, James Geddes. Jackson Browne has had a long and varied career, from his days as a one-man song factory for people like The Byrds, Nico and unsung folk hero Steve Noonan to his groundbreaking 1970's folk-rock albums and his more politically-oriented later material. Throughout, his work has been marked by intelligent, often poetic lyrics and sophisticated-but-accessible arrangements. THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR provides a handy overview of the seminal singer-songwriter's work. It includes pop hits like "Doctor My Eyes" and "Running On Empty" as well as lesser known songs like "Sky Blue And Black." As an added incentive to Browne fans, there are two new tracks. On one of them, the collection's title track, Browne enters into new territory by exploring ambient textures and trip-hop rhythms. SKU: 1005425

Urubu [Digipak]
Personnel includes: Antonio Carlos Jobim (Fender Rhodes piano, vocals); ClausOgerman (arranger, conductor); Miucha (vocals); Ron Carter (bass); Joao Palma (drums); Ray Armando (percussion). Recorded at Columbia Recording Studios, New York, New York on October 16-23, 1975. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. Like many of Antonio Carlos Jobim's '70s albums, 1976's URUBU was arranged by Claus Ogerman, an associate of Jobim's longtime producer Creed Taylor whose occasionally over the top orchestrations often split the ranks of Jobim's fans. Make no mistake, URUBU is definitely one of Jobim's most orchestrated album; Ogerman really goes nuts on a few of these tracks. Unlike some Creed Taylor-produced sessions, however, Ogerman's work doesn't really detract from Jobim's melodies. Perhaps this is because URUBU is Jobim's most consciously "big" work, a tribute record to the great Brazilian composer Hector Villa-Lobos. Jobim seems to be writing for a full orchestra here, or at least for more than a small bossa nova combo, and Ogerman's romantic flourishes actually help push the songs forward. The delightful "Saudade de Brasil," a melancholy but chipper tune, is the particular highlight. Those who hate heavy orchestration will not be impressed, but this may even surpass 1967's WAVE as Ogerman's best work with Jobim. SKU: 1054703

Mott The Hoople
Mott The Hoople: Ian Hunter (vocals, piano); Mick Ralphs (guitar, background vocals); Verden Allen (organ); Overend Watts (bass); Buffin (drums). Recorded in July 1969. Includes liner notes by Keith Smith. From the brilliant cover illustration by M.C. Escher to what nearly every critic called a "straightfaced" version of Sonny Bono's "Laugh At Me" (as though it was impossible to perform it any other way), Mott The Hoople's debut album showed that they were clearly no ordinary post-psychedelic British band. Their original material, particularly guitarist Mick Ralph's "Rock And Roll Queen," presaged the glam sound for which they would later become renowned. Appropriately, Mott The Hoople was produced by the inventive (and seriously whacked) Guy Stevens. A decade later, the Clash, who were strongly influenced by Mott The Hoople, called upon him to produce LONDON CALLING. SKU: 1087553

Livin' Legend [PA]
This includes a bonus bootleg CD. Personnel: B.G., Hakim, Wood, Soulja Slim, Sniper, Gar, Red, Wyndi (rap vocals). Producers include: Kidd, B.G., T Smooth, Soulja, Ke-Noe. So what does a guy who spat out hardcore gangsta rhymes as a pre-teen do when he reaches legal drinking age? Apparently he gets even harder. On LIVIN' LEGEND, New Orleans Dirty South pioneer B.G. (aka B. Gizzle and formerlyBaby Gangsta), spends much of his time warning anyone who might mess with him that he takes no guff (the terminology he uses to communicate this is, of course, a mite more colorful). On his first album since leaving his longtime label Cash Money under questionable circumstances, B.G.'s skills are undiminished, and he uses his prodigious talents to slam the company and anyone else who might doubt his talents. The rapper's trademark super-laid-back rhyming style (which makes even Snoop Dogg Sound hyperactive) carries a chilling sense of resignation that often communicates the hopelessness of ghetto life more effectively than other rappers' angry rants. In classic Dirty South gangsta style, B.G. addresses the untimely murder of friends, urban sexual politics, and various criminal activities with a lucid and often electrifying directness. It's Time
Personnel include: Michael Buble (vocals); Nelly Furtado (vocals); Brian Green (guitar, acoustic guitar); Dean Parks (guitar); Michael Thompson (electric guitar); Dan Higgins (flute, saxophone); Jochem Van Der Saag (harmonica, organ, programming); Chris Botti (trumpet); Randy Waldman, Alan Chang (piano); Brian Bromberg (bass guitar); Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Tull (drums); Rafael Padilla (percussion); Debbie Timuss (background vocals). Recording information: Chartmaker Studios, Malibu, California. Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations.Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, and, for fans of fearlessly romantic and infectiously swinging music, IT'S TIME is a sure bet. SKU: 6582440

Elvis [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); Scotty Moore (guitar); Bill Black (bass); DJ Fontana (drums). Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Digitally remastered by Dennis Ferrante. This was Elvis Presley's second album release--but only his first TRUE album, as his debut consisted of the Sun sessions. This album is a blueprint for Elvis's musical career--he would go, in varying degrees, on the paths he set upon here. Out-and-out rockers ("Rip It Up," "Long Tall Sally"), country ("How's the World Treating You"), pop ("Don't Be Cruel"), mushy ballads ("Old Shep"), earthy rhythm & blues ("Too Much," "Hound Dog"), along with southern gospel, madeup the sort of material Elvis would do all his life. He sings with authority and insolent swagger on the rockers (listen to the angst-ridden, manic "Paralyzed") and heartfelt vulnerability and soulfulness on the ballads (the stark "Love Me Tender"). ELVIS stands as one of the best rock & roll albums of the '50s, and one of the King's best, as well. SKU: 1016289
