Combining the retro-psychedelia of the Stone Roses with a large dose of The Doors' swirling keyboard-based sensibility, the Charlatans UK had an initially swift and painless rise to fame. Rocky times lay ahead however, including the mental illness of their bass player and the departure of their guitarist. Compounding these setbacks was the commercial disappointment of the otherwise outstanding BETWEEN 10TH AND 11TH.
Despite its lack of contemporary commercial success, this album contains the beginnings of a musical maturity and depth. More guitar-based than usual, BETWEEN 10TH AND 11TH embraces a loose, jamming tradition not usually found in post '70s British pop, shown to greatest effect on "The End of Everything." The album has a harder edge than previous efforts, as if theband were trying to stay one step ahead of their demons. Unfortunately they'd soon suffer more setbacks when integral member and keyboard player Rob Collins would be arrested for armed robbery; a few years later he was killed driving drunk from a pub to the studio.

WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, a 1999 Verve release, heralds the return of the cool and groovy Latin-tinged jazz of the '60s. Upon hearing the opening track, a bossa-nova-fied version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance," one might think he had accidentally put on a Getz/Gilberto record. In fact, it's hard to avoid comparing Krall's breathy alto to that of Astrud Gilberto-particularly on the more samba-flavored numbers.
But Krall ultimately resists comparisons. Her simultaneously textured and smooth tone, warm timbre, and conversational phrasing mark her as unique. The set of standards here, including "Let's Fall In Love," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "Pick Yourself Up" among others, is enhanced by fine session musicians and Johnny Mandel's tasteful arrangements. While Krall is more than comfortable with a sly swing (Michael Franks' "Popsicle Toes"), it is the stirring ballads-like the title track-that show her skill to best advantage. Krall is a considerable talent, and the time-tested,well-loved sound that characterizes these tracks should ensure her success.

During Judas Priest's lengthy andsuccessful career, at certain times the band has tried to crossover to a wider, not strictly headbanging audience. While 1986's TURBO is Priest's most obvious attempt in this direction, 1981's POINT OF ENTRY comes a close second.
After the release of BRITISH STEEL, its most successful album yet, the band decided to take the singalong anthem direction of "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight" one step further with POINT OF ENTRY. Such tracks as "Hot Rockin'," "Heading Out to the Highway," and "Don't Go," were all early MTV favorites, and although Judas Priest didn't exactly battle REO Speedwagon and Styx for the top of the charts on this outing, it deserves credit for this attempt to widen its horizons.

Few could have been expecting great things from ex-Happy Monday Shaun Ryder, last seen drug-addled and artistically barren whenthat group fizzled out unceremoniously. However, his return was glorious - harnessing the remixing talents of Danny Saber and the croaky rapping of Kermit, It's Great... offered an instant high for party people. Ryder's slurred rantings and nonsense lyrics seemed more at home than ever: 'A Big Day In The North' most clearly recalled the Mondays sound, but the mighty 'Reverend Black Grape', 'Kelly's Heroes' and the irresistible invitation to 'Shake Your Money' defined the funky, in-yer-face Black Grape sound.

Before you blow your rent money on another pricey, early-'70s import reissue, give ANALOG HI-FI SURPRISE a listen. Mushroom's members may wear their influences on their collective sleeves, but the West Coast troupe also lives up to the promise of its forebears. Mushroom may be an all-instrumental jamming unit, but this album is not a Phish-style noodle-fest. Trippy guitar, analog synth, and distorted electric piano are the primary flavors on these seemingly improvised cuts. But echoes of everything from early-'70s Miles and Soft Machine to vintage Krautrock can be heard here.
Mushroom may not have the chops to be a proper fusion band, but the unit brings an expansive jazziness to its colorfully unfurling psychedelic dreamscapes. Juggling dynamics, textures, and timbres, Mushroom manages to evoke the spirit of '71 withoutturning a blind eye to either the present or the future. Despite its retro leanings, ANALOG HI-FI SURPRISE is progressive in the truest sense of the word.

This multi-cultural Latin-American rock/funk/pop aggregation first came to public attention in the late '90s with an eclectic, groove-heavy approach and a celebratory aesthetic that endeared them to all comers. On EMBRACE THE CHAOS, Ozomatli continues to nurture their broad vision while venturing into new areas. While the album opens on a relatively familiar note with the undulating Latin rhythms of "Pa Lante," the scenario shifts in short order, as De La Soul adds rap vocals to the funky "1234." Underground rapper common also lends a hand, adding his lyrical skills to the album's title track. The wandering piano, moody horns, and atmospheric that introduce the instrumental interlude "Pensativo" could have come straight off a mid-'60s Pharoah Sanders album. A Cuban groove is embraced on the sprightly "Timido," and hints of everything from samba to salsa crop up elsewhere. Ultimately, EMBRACE THE CHAOS makes Ozomatli's broad stylistic leaps seem deceptively linear.

Clarke's second album as a leader announced him as a true virtuoso of the electric bass. Though he first came to attention playing with such venerated jazzmen as Pharoah Sanders and Horace Silver, Clarke's own music was squarely in the fusion realm. His solo debut, CHILDREN OF FOREVER, alternated embryonic electric jazz with vocal-oriented tunes full of the cosmic/post flowerchild lyrics typical of the era.Here, Clarke limits the vocals to a single song, concentrating instead on a driving, syncopated sound that more closely echoes his pioneering work with Return To Forever.
His slapping, thumb-popping lines lead the funk charge, as high-energy, R&B-inflected fusion workouts mix with affecting acoustic ballads (Clarke is equally impressive on acoustic bass). Interacting with nimble synths and powerhouse drumming, Clarke's bass work is both rhythmically infectious and technically masterful. His subsequent recordings became progressively more commercial, but STANLEY CLARKE is the bassist's most satisfying artistic statement.

Youngster Gregory Tardy is as fine an example of "Young Lion" proficiency as can be found anywhere. His improviser's mind and composer's pen are a powerful combination, as is evident on SERENDIPITY. Though this tenorist's tone is on the slight side, he more than makes up for it with a tremendous sense of daring and a seemingly insatiable desire to keep things out on the edge. His improvs are always just on the verge of getting too far over the top, but he's always able to gracefully reign them back in and glide to a safe landing. His cast of sidemen, including trumpeters Tom Harrell and Russell Gunn and the great pianist Mulgrew Miller, are right there with him in all the dynamic tugs-of-war.
