Immortal Otis Redding, The
Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals); Steve Cropper (guitar); Andrew Love, Joe Arnold (tenor & baritone saxophones); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Booker T. Jones, Isaac Hayes (keyboards); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson Jr (drums). Recorded in 1967. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot And Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). This posthumously released title represents some of the great soul singer's very last recordings, made just before his tragic death in the plane crash that also claimed his horn group The Bar-Kays. The circumstances of its release notwithstanding, THE IMMORTAL OTIS REDDING is also one of the artist's greatest single albums. Sparely produced by the masterful Stax-Volt session guitarist Steve Cropper, this superb set features the equally eminent Booker T & the MGs plus a punchy horn section whose crisp charts beautifully punctuate the deep, relaxed groove at every turn. With support like this, Redding turns in some of the most nuanced, impassioned vocals of his career. While there is no one song as beautifully wrought as "(Sitting On The) Dock Of The Bay," the opening "I've Got Dreams To Remember" comes close. Cropper's own famously sensitive guitar work is in full evidencethroughout, making these sessions an equal collaboration between two giants of Memphis soul. SKU: 1009766

I Can See Your House From Here
Personnel: John Scofield (electric & steel-string acoustic guitars); Pat Metheny (electric & nylon-string acoustic guitars, guitar synthesizer); Steve Swallow (acoustic & electric basses); Bill Stewart (drums). Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York in December 1993. Superstar jazz recording sessions generally proceed with an abundance of ego and good intentions--yet rarely if ever is the sum equal to its parts. There's simply no substitute for empathy and forethought. Or the mutual respect these master stylists display on I CAN SEE YOUR HOUSE FROM HERE. Scofield and Metheny represent two distinct takes on modern jazz and the electric guitar. Both come directly out of Jim Hall, the poet laureate of jazz guitar. Metheny's romantic "Say The Brother's Name" and "Quiet Rising," and Scofield's after hours blues "You Speak My Language" provide ardent settings for both guitarists to pay homage to their primary influence with suede, legato phrasings and supple harmonies. But where Metheny's muse (and his immensely popular band) often tends toward rich layered harmonies and percolating Brazilian rhythms, Scofield is a hard blues, hard bop player, with more than a little touch of funk in his tone. Where Metheny flows, Scofield sort of barks and bites into his lines, as reflected by such ardent, jagged themes as "One Way To Be" and "No Way Jose." Yet for all the stylistic differences, the sum of their collaboration is such that casual listeners might find it difficult to tell who's who. Scofield and Metheny touchon all sorts of dancing instrumental moods, leavened by modern jazz, flavored by rock, blues and Latin America, driven in style by bass guitarist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart. Beautifully recorded, I CAN SEE YOUR HOUSE FROM HERE is an authentic musical communion. SKU: 1006447

Stranger Than Fiction
Bad Religion: Greg Graffin (vocals); Brett Gurewitz (guitar, background vocals); Greg Hetson (guitar); Jay Bentley (bass, background vocals); Bobby Schayer (drums). Additional personnel: Tim "Lint" Armstrong (vocals); Wayne Kramer (guitar); Andy Wallace (Hammond organ);Jim Lindeberg (background vocals). Bad Religion is punk-rock's Bonnie Raitt, a cult band that persisted and persisted until the world finally came around to them. Around the time Robert Johnson's old Delta blues records started selling in the hundreds of thousands, Raitt started collecting platinum records and Grammys; likewise, in the era of Nirvana's and Green Day's run up the charts, Bad Religion began seeing big returns for the same kind of records they used to make for peanuts. STRANGER THAN FICTION is where Bad Religion cashes in--at the alternative register, anyway. Far from a sellout, it's a confident reaffirmation of all the band's strengths: anthemic rhythm-guitar hooks that are equal parts 70's punk, 80's hardcore and classic heavy metal; a fast but super-tight rhythm section; unswervingly political lyrics; and, in defiant contrast to all of the above, pop harmonies. Songs like "Incomplete," "Stranger Than Fiction" and "Handshake" (which equates record-company business deals with class and race warfare) enter your head as hurricanes of information about the world's ills. They remain there because they're built upon blistering punk-rock guitar hooks. SKU: 1017147

Danzig Vol.4
DANZIG 4 contains a hidden track after "Let It Be Captured." Danzig: Glenn Danzig (vocals, guitar, piano); John Christ (guitar); Eerie Von (bass); Chuck Biscuits (drums). Recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood, California and Sound City, Van Nuys, California. Cult figure Glen Danzig couldn't have made a better choice to co-produce his latest album, DANZIG 4, than with American Recordings main man Rick Rubin. Rubin's production flavor first became a hit with the Beastie Boys in the late '80s. His flair for big drums and guitar has always been a part of his production, and with Danzig he might have finally met his match. Danzig's culmination of Sabbath-era Ozzy Osborne, and the bravado of Robert Plant's Led Zeppelin years rips through the speakers on twelve tracks of possession and malice. With this band, Danzig's considerable vocal talents are beefed up by a band with a bigger musical bite than either of Danzig's previous efforts, Samhain or the Misfits before them. The huge guitar riffing throughout DANZIG 4 is eerily subdued on "Bringer Of Death," where the Sabbath influence slips through in a sitar-like acoustic piece wedged immediately after guitarist John Christ's ferocious electric attack and Chuck Bisquits' pummeling double-bass drums. DANZIG 4 proves Danzig to be in fine form after almost twenty years in the business. SKU: 1073201

Green River [Remastered]
Creedence Clearwater Revival: John Fogerty (vocals, guitar); Tom Fogerty (guitar); Stu Cook (bass); Doug Clifford (drums). Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh. Digitally remastered utilizing the 20-Bit K2 Super CodingSystem. Creedence Clearwater Revival were part of a second wave of San Francisco groups, but unlike their geographical contemporaries, the quartet offered a disciplined music, indebted to '50s rock & roll and southern "swamp" styles. Leader, singer and songwriter John Fogerty possesses one of rock's most distinctive voices, his hoarse, urgent intonation matched by his group's mathematically precise drive. GREEN RIVER, their third album, includes two million-selling singles, the bluesy title track and "Bad Moon Rising," both of which encapsulate the Creedence metier. Remaining selections exhibit a similar economy, crammed with punchy hooklines, tight playing, and incisive lyrics, which take inspiration from traditional styles but in the process create something unique. Live 1975-1985
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica); Steve Van Zandt (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Nils Lofgren (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Clarence Clemons (saxophone, percussion, background vocals); Roy Bittan (piano, synthesizer, background vocals); Danny Federici (organ, accordion, glockenspiel, keyboards, background vocals);Patty Scialfa (sunthesizer, background vocals); Max Weinberg (drums). Flo & Eddie: Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan. Miami Horns: Stan Harrison (tenor saxophone); Eddie Manion (baritone saxophone); Mark Pender (trumpet); Richie La Bamba (trombone). Producers: Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin. Recorded live between 1975 and 1985. There's one song from a 1975 show, which makes the title of this box set true in the literal sense, and eight from a 1978 appearance at the Roxy in Los Angeles, but in essence this is Bruce Springsteen in the '80s--physically huge, politically charged and desperate to connect. You get the sense this is no accident. LIVE/1975-85 easily could have been a celebration of Springsteen's rise to rock & roll fame, instead, it's a concerted effort to make something of it. Almost all of LIVE/1975-85 was recorded in arenas and stadiums and almost all of it is intent on spreading a message. The cover song that resonates most isn't the party encore "Raise Your Hand"(from 1978) but the anti-war chant "War" (from 1985). The most astonishing sequence of songs is all acoustic and almost all angry: Woody Guthrie's protest song "This Land Is Your Land" and Springsteen's own "Nebraska," "Johnny 99" and "Reason To Believe." With its reverberant keyboards and a haunting intro that quotes the soul classic "Nowhere to Run," even the love song "Cover Me" sounds like some sort of protest. There's lots of celebrating and rocking here, too, but mostly there's lots to think about. SKU: 1023578

Reckoning
R.E.M.: Michael Stipe (vocals); Mike Mills (vocals, bass); Bill Berry (vocals, drums); Peter Buck (guitar). Recorded atReflection Sound, Charlotte, North Carolina. The murmuring continued with this, R.E.M.'s second album, recorded in only two weeks, and yet critical acclaim and a growing fanbase had not made the music any less elusive. From the cover depiction of a winding river/snake, the jangly music within was similarly ambiguous, drenched in alternately murky, then dazzlingly clear, images. The water theme predominates throughout side one's five-song suite, with talk of harbours, oceans and water towers, crowned by the sublime lament of "So. Central Rain." Later, the melancholic eulogy of "Camera" sits comfortably beside the cod-country of "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" and the brisk but disillusioned tour around "Little America." An astonishingly assured and uncommercial half-sibling to MURMUR: file under water. SKU: 1004777

Platinum Album, The [ECD]
This is an Enhanced audio CDwhich contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Vengaboys: Kim, Roy, Denice, Yorick. Additional personnel includes: Tom Bakker (arranger); Jane Talany Van Amstel (background vocals). Recorded between August 1999 and January 2000. An exuberant foray into pumping, postmodern Euro pop, THE PLATINUM ALBUM will tickle even the most serious music fan's fancy. Vengaboys' debut lays waste to the cynics, puts the swagger into the walkman wearer's gait, and provide insurmountable competition to the likes of Steps and B*Witched in providing the intoxicating dance beat for those summer discotheque excursions. Starting with the swoon-some ode "Shalala Lala," a ditty that will accompany many a passionate evening's embrace, this album blossoms into a pop-tastic tour de force. PLATINUM moves from the hi-energy dance anthem "Kiss (When the Sun Don't Shine)" to the chilled, reggae-tinged groove of "Uncle John from Jamaica." It's a swathe of rampant, frolic-inducing tune-smithery, and there's no choice but to waggle whenever one hears a Vengaboys beat. All said, this work encompasses the Vengaboys' fun-for-fun's-sake ethic, and only the most churlish critic could deny the worth of this as a soundtrack to the teenybopper's evening. SKU: 1029718

Anti Pop
Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, bass); Larry LaLonde (guitar); Brain (drums). Additional personnel includes: Tom Waits (vocals, Mellotron); Martina Topley-Bird (vocals); Tom Morello, James Hetfield, Jim Martin (guitar). Producers include: Tom Morello, Tom Waits, Stewart Copeland, Fred Durst, Matt Stone. Primus is sometimes considered a square peg in a round hole amongst the band's musical peers. Yet somehow, Les Claypool and company have always managed a perfect fit. On ANTIPOP, the band continues on its fearless musical journey. The impressive roster of guest artists is only part of the reason why this album is a must for music fans who walk their own paths. Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello brings his percussive and unnerving guitar sound to "Electric Uncle Sam" and "Mama Didn't Raise No Fool." On the tongue-in-cheek "Sacred Cow," Les Claypool's distinctive slap-bass style shines. Guitarist Larry LaLonde is conservative yet brilliant in his moody, textural playing that is fitting without ever being flashy. "Eclectic Electric" brings together an unlikely pair of guests: Jim Martin and Metallica's James Hetfield, both of whom were in bands with the late Cliff Burton. Drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia, who returned to Primus for THE BROWN ALBUM, neatly fills the vacancy left by Tim Alexander, offeringcomplex rhythms and jazz-influenced dynamics. ANTIPOP expresses the essence of a unique band embraced by people who don't mind a little pork in their soda. SKU: 1041696

What's Going On [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Marvin Gaye (vocals, piano); David Van Depitte (arranger, conductor); Robert White, Joe Messina (guitar); Johnny Griffith (celeste, keyboards); Earl Van Dyke (keyboards); Eli Fountain (alto saxophone); Wild Bill Moore (tenor saxophone);Jack Brokensha (vibraphone, percussion); Bob Babbit, James Jamerson (bass); Chet Forest (drums); Eddie Brown, Earl DeRouen (bongos, conga); Jack Ashford (tambourine, percussion). Recorded at Hitsville, Golden World and United Sound Studios, Detroit, Michican. Originally released on Tamla (310). Includes liner notes by Marvin Gaye and Ben Edmonds. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Originally released in 1971, WHAT'S GOING ON remains a landmark album, one that redefined music with powerful, anthemic songs that remain pertinent to this day. Up to that point, R&B albums were collections of singles, with secondary material rounding out the LPs. Marvin Gaye changed all this by releasing a concept album that went beyond the usual boy-meets-girl scenario, weaving together an aural collage of societal ills. "Crime is increasing/Trigger-happy policing," from "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)," is as potent a line today as it was over twenty years ago. With the country still divided over the Vietnam War, the title track became a rallying cry for peace. Layered with lush orchestrations, heavenly background vocals and traces of jazz in particular spots, WHAT'S GOING ON never sounds musically dated. The critical and commercial success of Marvin Gaye's opus also enabled other artists to break free from the creative shackles imposed by Motown, and experience more autonomy in the making of their music. City Of Angels
Original score composed by Gabriel Yared. Soundtrack compilation producer: Danny Bramson. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. "Iris" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Uninvited"won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song, and was nominated for Best Song Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television. "City Of Angels" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television. In the bittersweet "Angel," Sarah McLachlan croons, "You are pulled from the wreckage of your sudden reverie/You're in the arms of the angel/May you find some comfort here." U2"s "If God Will Send His Angels" asks the question, "If God will send his angels/And if God will send a sign/Where do we go?" The spiritual tone of this soundtrack, laden with angelic images, is set from the beginning, occasionally brought down to earth by bluesy entries like John Lee Hooker's "Mama, You Got a Daughter" and Eric Clapton's "Further On Up the Road." A major part of CITY OF ANGELS' appeal is its inclusion of previously unreleased material from Goo Goo Dolls, Peter Gabriel, and Alanis Morissette, whose "Uninvited" is a riveting, dramatically layered ballad which veers from sweet to edgy and stark. Greatest Hits Vol.1
Personnel includes: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Danny Kootch (acoustic guitar, congas); David Spinozza, Danny Kortchmar (guitar); Dan Dugmore, Red Rhodes (steel guitar); Byron Berline (fiddle); David Sanborn, Michael Brecker (saxophone); Clarence McDonald (piano, Fender Rhodes, keyboards); Carole King (piano); Kenny Ascher (electric piano); Andrew Gold (harmonium, background vocals); Victor Feldman (vibraphone); Bobby West (acoustic bass); Lee Sklar,John London, Randy Meisner, Andy Muson (bass); Russ Kunkel (drums, congas, cabasa); Jim Keltner, Rick Marotta (drums); Ralph MacDonald, Milt Holland (percussion); Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, Graham Nash, David Crosby, Herb Pedersen (background vocals). Producers: Peter Asher, David Spinozza, Lenny Waronker, Russ Titelman. Principally recorded at Sound Factory, Sunset Sound, Crystal Recording Studios and Warner Bros. Recording Studios, Hollywood, California between 1969 & 1976. What self-respecting '70s pop music fan's collection would be complete without James Taylor's GREATEST HITS? Not many, apparently, since it is one of the biggest selling catalog titles of all time. All of Taylor's huge hits from the first, and possibly most acclaimed, leg of his long career are included. "Fire And Rain," "You've Got A Friend," "Sweet Baby James" and "How Sweet It Is" sound as golden as the day they were first heard on the radio. Interestingly, two of the songs here, "Something In the Way She Moves" and "Carolina In My Mind" from Taylor's first album have been re-recorded especially for this collection. Special guests like Carole King, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Graham Nash, David Crosby and David Sanborn add an extra special something to the atmosphere. Listening to these songs together in one collection takes you back to a gentler time when a carefully crafted song was a thing of beauty and not just a product to be marketed like so many shiny trinkets. If you are among the few who don't already own this special collection, what are you waiting for? SKU: 1004849

Hounds Of Love [Remastered]
Personnel: Kate Bush (vocals, piano, synthesizer); BillWhelan, Michael Kamen (arranger); Alan Murphy, Brian Bath, John Williams (guitar); Donal Lunny (bouzouki); John Sheaham (fiddle, whistles); Paddy Bush (violin, fujare, dijeridu, balalaika, background vocals); Jonathan Williams (cello); Liam O'Flynn (Uilleann pipes); Kevin McAlea (synthesizer); Del Palmer (bass, background vocals); Eberhard Weber, Danny Thompson (bass); Morris Pert (percussion); Stuart Elliot, Charlie Morgan (drums); Brian Bath, John Carder Bush (background vocals). Additional personnel: The Medicci Sextet, The Richard Hickox Singers. Engineers: Del Palmer, Haydn Bendall, Brian Tench. Though not the most prolific of album artists, Bush's works make up in impact what they lack in frequency. Her style and material has always been unique, eccentric even, but Hounds Of Love is probably the strongest mix of controlled musical experimentation and lyrical expression. It deals with big issues - childhood fantasy and trauma, conflict, sexuality - but rarely lapses into pretension. The intense arrangements are perfectly matched to the subjects: `Running Up That Hill' climactically erotic, `Cloudbusting' broodingly triumphant, `The Big Sky' just. big. And it's all her own work. Crossroads
Personnel include: Deitrick Haddon (vocals, various instruments); Rance Allen, WWIC M.V.P., Lady Life (vocals); BJ (rap vocals); Roy Hamilton, Ralph Kearns, Terrence Herd (various instruments); Damita Haddon (background vocals). Recording information: Battery Studios, New York, New York; The Supe Kitchen, Mt. Vernon, NY; MorrisoundStudios, Tampa, FL. Gospel meets hip-hop in the shape of Detroit artist Deitrick Haddon's CROSSROADS, which, in addition to some fine worship music, boasts some slamming beats, from the bubbling rhythms of "7-Ds" to the Earth, Wind & Fire-like "U.N.I.T.Y." Haddon's smoothly assured vocals bring an Usher-like urgency to the redemptive "It's Over Now," while things take a more traditional turn on the majestic "God Didn't Give Up." Haddon is joined by Contemporary Christian music pioneer Reverend Rance Allen on "Had Not Been," which, in its old-school approach, recalls the Reverend Allen's roots as a Stax recording artist. Pastor and self-help guru Paula White assists with a few inspirational words on the Caribbean-inflected "Walls Are Tumbling." CROSSROADS is a soul-stirring mix of traditional gospel and urban R&B that adds to Grammy-winner Haddon's reputation as one of gospel's most talented performers. SKU: 6567846

Green Mile, The
Original score by Thomas Newman. Although the movie (from a Stephen King novel) is set in the '30s, THE GREEN MILE's score by Thomas Newman (son of Alfred, cousin of Randy) is thoroughly contemporary, and postmodern to the max in its mix of styles and sounds. Newman is equally at home with a full orchestra, a rock band, or samples; his score switches on a dime from full-bore Copland-esque Marlboro Country Americana to bluesy acoustic slide guitar. The only real concessions to the period here are Fred Astaire singing "Cheek to Cheek" (from TOP HAT),along with songs by Billie Holiday ("I Can't Give You Anything But Love"), Guy Lombardo ("Charmaine"), and unjustly forgotten '30s pop star crooner Gene Austin ("Did You Ever See a Dream Walking?").
