Plugged - MTV In Concert
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitar); Bobby King, Gia Ciambotti, Carol Dennis, Cleopatra Kennedy, Angel Rogers (vocals); Crystal Taliefero (guitar, percussion, vocals); Shayne Fontayne (guitar); Roy Bittan (keyboards); Tommy Sims (bass); Zachary Alford (drums); Patty Scialfa. "Thunder Road" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best MaleRock Vocal Performance. Asked to perform on MTV UNPLUGGED, Bruce Springsteen, typically intractable, started out with an unreleased solo acoustic ditty, announced that the unplugged portion of the show was over and called out a full electric band to play the rest of the set. This isn't the E Street Band, but the session band he assembled to tour after releasing HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN in 1992. The set is heavy with songs from those albums--vaguely optimistic tunes about love, babies, and the light of day that waits just around the bend even through the darkest night. Diehard Springsteen fans will no doubt be put off by the lack of E Streeters, but as compensation they get the first appearance on an album of Springsteen performing "Light Of Day," which he wrote for Joan Jett, and that unreleased opening number, the surprisingly saucy "Red Headed Woman." There are also overhauled versions of the E Street classics "Darkness on The Edge Of Town" and "Thunder Road." SKU: 1005080

Johnny Winter
Also available in a 3-pack with SECOND WINTER and CAPTURED LIVE. Johnny Winter's debut album is one of the pinnacles of Texas blues rock, displaying everything the young guitar slinger had learned in the previous decade spent as a struggling musician, and then some. It's not just any major-label debut that can get Chicago blues legend Willie Dixon to play sideman bass on a few tracks. Recorded with a band featuring the rhythm section from hisold power trio Winter, bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer John Turner, along with kid brother Edgar on sax and organ, these nine songs are split two-to-one in favor of relatively obscure blues tunes--Dixon's "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" is about as well-known as they get--over Winter's more rock-oriented originals, like "Leland Mississippi Blues." It's a good ratio, as the results show off what Winter can do in a format not unlike the early Yardbirds, or John Mayall's Clapton-era Bluesbreakers. SKU: 1011257

Rock Of Ages (The Band In Concert) [Remastered]
The Band: Robbie Robertson (vocals, guitar); Richard Manuel (vocals, piano); Rick Danko (vocals, bass); Levon Helm (vocals, drums); Garth Hudson (soprano & tenor saxophones, organ). Additional personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals); Joe Farrell (soprano & tenor saxophones, English horn); J.D. Parron (alto saxophone, clarinet); Howard Johnson (baritone saxophone); Snooky Young (trumpet, flugelhorn); Earl McIntyre (trombone); Allen Toussaint (arranger). Recorded live at the Academy Of Music, New York, New York in 1971. Originally released as a 2-LP set on Capitol. Includes liner notes by Greil Marcus. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Long before they became The Band, these four Canadians and one southern rebel rocked the rooftops off Canada as The Hawks, Ronnie Hawkins fierce back-up band. Their non-stop performing took them through nearly every bar in theregion, and the group developed into a tightly wound rock unit. It is therefore interesting that, as The Band, the group was known more for its reluctance in the live arena than for its live prowess. This was in part due to leader Robbie Robertson's stage jitters, which seemed to worsen as The Band's status swelled. ROCK OF AGES provides a telling account of what glorious heights The Band was capable of when it tore loose onstage. Here the five members function as one shifting, interlocking force, summoning Americana, phantom soul, and barroom rockers with ease and freedom. Garth Hudson conjures pure organ voodoo with an impromptu instrumental, "The Genetic Method," before the band launches into the otherworldly "Chest Fever." Elsewhere, the live document percolates with similarly inspired fervor. New Orleans' Allen Touissant must receive his share of the credit, as his horn arrangements pump and drive The Band's earth-drenched rock up from the dirt and into the stratosphere. SKU: 1058524

I Know Who Holds Tomorrow
Alison Krauss & The Cox Family: Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle, viola), Suzanne Cox, Evelyn Cox, Lynn Cox, Willard Cox, Sidney Cox (vocals). Additional personnel: Ron Block (guitar, banjo), Rob Ickes (dobro), Adam Steffey (mandolin), Andrea Zonn (fiddle), Gary Smith (piano), Barry Bales (acoustic bass), Viktor Krauss (acoustic, electric & arco basses), Kenny Malone (drums, percussion). Recorded at Nightingale Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. I KNOW WHO HOLDS TOMORROW won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Southerm Gospel, Country Gospel Or Bluegrass Gospel Album. It's a fact. Alison Krauss has the sweetest voice this side of heaven. Krauss' rapturous lead vocals and angelic harmonies, combined with the simplicity of the blugrass/gospel Cox family, are breathtakingly plain and sweet. With voices melding as one, Alison becomes an easy fit--almost familial--with the Cox clan. Suzanne Cox's warbly, fluid soprano is another cornerstone of this collection of traditional and contemporary hymns, and Willard Cox adds the laconic vocals that are so important to the genre. As usual, Alison's backing band, Union Station, is tasteful and first-rate. Highlights include a rocking version of Paul Simon's "Loves Me Like A Rock" and a spirited, old-timey version of Loretta Lynn's "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven." I KNOW WHO HOLDS TOMORROW transcends genre;displaying dashes of soul and jazz, it becomes an uplifting piece of art. Yet it is also an understated recording, acoustic yet powerful. It was a well-deserved winner of a 1995 Grammy Award and brought overdue recognition for the extraordinary singer, fiddler and (now) producer, Alison Krauss. It is a masterful collaboration. Dude Ranch
Blink 182: Tom DeLonge (guitar, vocals); Mark Hopper (bass, vocals); Scott Raynor (drums). Additional personnel: Mark Trombino (piano, keyboards); Scott Russo. Recorded at Big Fish Studios, Encinitas, California. Following the release of their 1996 debut CHESHIRE CAT, Blink 182 returns with a satisfactory sophomore effort. Clearly influenced by the likes of GreenDay and Weezer, Blink 182 provides fast, aggressive punk that is also melodic and fun. The trio's lyrics are filled with the angst and alienation that teens can relate to, while injecting humor also. "A New Hope" is an ode to Princess Leia and the Star Wars gang, while "Waggy" is a word bassist Mark Hoppus came up with while belching. Hard-core fans of the band will not be disappointed, as "Degenerate" is a re-recording from their demo tape, and "Lemmings" is from a split 7". All the songs on the record are catchy and infectious and hit single potential abounds. The musicianship is also there, as the chops are tight and worthy of comparison to any great punk band. Overall, DUDE RANCH proves the continued viability of punk-pop in the late '90s. SKU: 1014767

Come Away With Me
Personnel: Norah Jones (vocals, piano, Wurlitzer piano); Jesse Harris, Kevin Breit (acoustic & electric guitars); Tony Scherr (acoustic guitar, slide guitar); Adam Levy, Bill Frisell (electric guitar); Adam Rogers (guitar); Jenny Scheinman (violin); Sam Yahel (Hammond B-3 organ); Rob Burger (organ); Lee Alexander (bass); Brian Blade (drums, percussion); Dan Reiser, Kenny Wollesen (drums). Producers: Arif Mardin, Norah Jones, Jay Newland, Craig Street. Recorded at Sorcerer Sound, New York, New York and Allaire Studios, Shokan, New York. Norah Jones won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. COME AWAY WITH ME won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). "Don't Know Why" won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Arif Mardin won the 2003 Grammy Award for Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical). A direct descendant from the pedigree of one of the 20th century's virtuosos, Norah Jones might not be on such a lofty artistic level as her dad Ravi Shankar, but certainly inherited some musical intuition from him. With nary a sitar nor raga within earshot, the young newcomer sounds very much an assimilated, western, 21st century pop-jazzsinger. One thing that separates her from the pack is Ms. Jones' own piano stylings--not flashy, but deftly doubling or echoing her voice--that discreetly act as the glue holding together these airy, delicate, and beautiful arrangements. But the centerpiece is certainly the 22-year-old's confident-beyond-her-years vocal delivery in addition to a precise diction and velvety tone. Shades of Nina Simone, vintage Phoebe Snow, and a less beatnik Rickie Lee Jones are evident throughout as the young siren coolly sashays through mostly new material by guitarist-songwriter Jesse Harris (formerly of Once Blue) and a few choice covers. Veteran producer Arif Mardin frames a most notable debut with a translucent touch, and appearances by jazz heroes Bill Frisell and Brian Blade gild the lily. SKU: 1071067

Blow Up [Remastered]
Personnel: Herbie Hancock (piano); Jim Hall (guitar); Joe Newman, Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Phil Woods (alto saxophone); Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); Paul Griffin (organ); Ron Carter (bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums); The Yardbirds, Tomorrow. The Yardbirds track on Blow-Up is one of the only ones that feature Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page on guitar (Jimmy Page mostly played bass until Jeff Beck left the band, then he played guitar). Recorded in New York in 1966. Includes liner notes by David Fricke. A surreal whodunit that captures the flavor of Swinging London as seen through the eyes of a character loosely based on real-life fashion photographers David Bailey and Terence Donovan, Michelangelo Antonioni's cinematic cult classic yielded an equally intriguing soundtrack. Herbie Hancock's debut as a film-score composer, BLOW-UP benefits from the fact that its Italian director was a jazz aficionado. Consequently, Hancock was able to recruit a Who'sWho of jazz greats to aid him in the studio, including Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Jim Hall, Ron Carter, and Jack DeJohnette. Out of this rich working relationship comes the smoldering, noir-ish "The Naked Camera," the snappy funk of "The Thief," and the undulating "Verushka (Part 1)," with its quirky melodica and guitar interplay. Of particular note is the spry "Bring Down the Birds," whose bass line was later incorporated into the 1990 Deee-Lite hit "Groove Is In the Heart." The non-Hancock parts of the score include solo contributions from Lovin' Spoonful members Steve Boone and John Sebastian, cuts from Steve Howe's pre-Yes outfit Tomorrow, and "Stroll On," a lyrical reworking of "Train Kept A-Rollin'" by a rare Yardbirds line-up featuring both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. Freedom Suite
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Oscar Pettiford (bass); Max Roach (drums). Recorded in New York, New York in February 1958. Originally released on Riverside (258). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. Digitally remastered by Tom Size (1989, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). By February of 1958, when Sonny Rollins recorded FREEDOM SUITE, his political consciousness had risen to match the poetic scope of his music. In addressing his place as a creative artist and an African-American, Rollins recognized that both aspects of his being existed under second class circumstances, and that it was time forthis country to review these inequities. In recording with bassist Oscar Pettiford and drummer Max Roach, Rollins aligned himself with the modern jazz innovators who best exemplified his righteous brand of freedom. Pettiford is particularly inspired on trio and duo versions of "Till There Was You," where he displays an uncanny knack for enunciating lyrical syncopations without losing the flow of the beat or a sense of harmonic structure. His ringing half notes on the head to "Will You Still Be Mine?" set up a vibrant series of Rollins/Roach exchanges, while his charming solo distills the melody into its most swinging components. But it is "Freedom Suite," with its stunning stops and starts, extended variations, thematic interludes and exhilirating denouement, that invites the most superlatives. Rollins' sense of sustained melodic invention is remarkable, as is his cyclical formal structure. The opening theme, with its affectionate parody of a formal overture, sets the band in motion, as if motifs and contrasting themes criss-cross and collide in a swinging trialogue. A waltz figure and dramatic extended cadenza introduces one of Rollins' most touching ballads, richly tinted in smoky shades of blue, with some joyous buck and wing by Pettiford and Roach. Finally, a reprise of the waltz theme gives way to a climactic chase, inspiring some of Roach's most fervent, singing breaks, before a return to the opening theme ties it all up. SKU: 1014669

Blues (Studio/Live Collectors Edition)
Contains 5 previously unreleased tracks. Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar, dobro); Albert Lee (guitar, background vocals); Duane Allman, Freddie King, Dave Mason, Ron Wood, George Terry (guitar); Dick Sims (piano, organ); Bobby Whitlock (piano); Gary Brooker (keyboards, background vocals); Chris Stainton (keyboards); Carl Radle, Dave Markee (bass); Jamie Oldaker, Jim Gordon, Henry Spinetti, Al Jackson (drums); Sergio Pastora (percussion); Yvonne Elliman, Marcy Levy (background vocals). Recorded between 1970 and 1980. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Music Group Studios). Prior to Eric Clapton's pop- and MTV-driven mid-'80s work, he spent the '70s and early '80s playing languid, singer-songwriter soft rock evocative of J.J. Cale and Don Edwards. But Clapton always kept one foot in the blues of his youth. BLUES brings this material together in one place and throughout, Slowhand taps into an inner spirituality that does these blues standards well. The first disc contains studio recordings that include tributes to many influences including Elmore James ("The Sky Is Crying") and Willie Dixon ("Meet Me [Down At the Bottom]"). Most impressive is a stripped-down version of Little Walter's "Mean Old World," in which Clapton and Duane Allman duet using National steel and slide guitars. The tempo picks up during an alternate version of Bo Diddley's "Before You Accuse Me" that becomes a rollicking shuffle and a cover of Muddy Water's "Blow Wind Blow" in which Clapton's guitar parries with Gary Brooker's piano. On disc two, "Live Blues," Slowhand's playing deliciously simmers on material by Robert Johnson and Otis Rush. He eventually cuts loose as he trades licks with his hero Freddie King on a joyous cover of Bobby "Blue" Bland's "Further on Up the Road." SKU: 4132230

White Trash Beautiful
Personnel include: Everlast (vocals); Josh Lopez, Rob Hill (guitar); Alma Cielo (violin); Dante Ross, Zac Rae, Alma Cielo, John Vercessi (organ, keyboards); Chris Thomas, Justin Premino, Dorian Heartsong (bass guitar); Tobias Raulf (drums); Al Pahanish (percussion); Angelo Moore (Theremin); Jenny Fujita, B. Real, Carlos Rigas (background vocals). Producers: Everlast; Rob Hill; Dante Ross; Emile. Recording information: MGS Soundlab, Los Angeles, California; Stimulated Dummies Studio 57, New York. For WHITE TRASH BEAUTIFUL, Everlast's third album since his reinvention as an acoustic-guitar-slinging storyteller, the former House of Pain member also known as Erik Schrody further embraces his rootsy, down-home leanings. The opening track, "Blinded By the Sun," expertly sets the tone for the album (and proves to be one of its strongest tracks), with a strummed guitar lineenhanced by samples from classic rap tunes by Run-DMC and Eric B. & Rakim. Here, as on other cuts, Everlast uses his gravelly voice to evoke the humble dreams and everyday lives of the working class, earning him status as sort of a de facto Bruce Springsteen for the hip-hop set. Although the mood of WHITE TRASH BEAUTIFUL is largely melancholy, Everlast's knack for pop melodies and vintage soul hooks makes the album a strangely uplifting affair. SKU: 6559951

When drummer Ginger Baker decided to form his own band, he reached out to the cream of British musicians, and recruited guitarist Eric Clapton and his rhythm mate from the Alexis Korner and Graham Bond bands, bassist Jack Bruce. Cream ushered in aformidable new wave of electric blues bands, including the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Led Zeppelin. Among the converts was a 13-year old Irish guitarist named Gary Moore, who saw Cream in Belfast and went on to form Thin Lizzy with Phil Lynott. BBM's AROUND THE NEXT DREAM is the culmination of Moore's boyhood dream to play in a blues band like Cream. With his muscular Les Paul timbre and dancing attack, Moore invokes the spirit of Eric Clapton and all the great British blues players of the '60s, to particular effect on the jump blues workout "Wonder Why" and the ferocious variations of "Why Does Love Have To Go Wrong" (which echoes the Bruce-Baker groove on "We're Going Wrong"). Needless to say, echoes of Cream (and the bassist's esteemed solo albums) set the overall tone, in Bruce's dramatic vocal leaps from earthy tenor to keening falsetto, and in fresh material which suggests great grooves of yore, such as "Waiting In The Wings" ("Tales Of Brave Ulysses"/"Golden Days"), "City Of Gold" ("Crossroads") and "Glory Days" ("White Room"). However, on "Naked Flame," Gary Moore's vocal feature, Baker's slow fatback groove recalls those Memphis and Muscle Shoals rhythm sections that used to back up Otis Redding and Aretha, while "Wrong Side Of Town" is a moody film noire ballad full of quirky melodic twists--making AROUND THE NEXT DREAM more than just an exercise in nostalgia. John Barleycorn Must Die [Remastered]
Traffic: SteveWinwood (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, organ, bass, percussion); Jim Capaldi (vocals, drums, tambourine, percussion); Chris Wood (flute, saxophone, organ, percussion). Producers: Chris Blackwell, Steve Winwood, Guy Stevens. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Recorded in 1970. Originally released on Island (9116). Includes liner notes by Brian Hogg. Digitally remastered by Gary Moore, Alan Leeming & Keiron McGarry (Universal Digital Mastering Studios, London, England). This was intended as the first Steve Winwood solo album following the stop-start-stop career of Traffic as a working unit. Capaldi and Wood were drafted in as session musicians. This logic sounds ridiculous now, as of course we always knew they would re-form. Melody Maker proclaimed 'TRAFFIC TO ROAR AGAIN'. The rest did them good, both physically and musically with two new Traffic standards added to their catalogue, the instrumental 'Glad' and 'Empty Pages'. The late Chris Wood was an exceptional flute player, never hogging the limelight. The subtlety of his playing excels on the title track. They held it together for four more years after this. Sean Nos Nua
A long held-desire of Sinead O'Connor's was to record an album's worth of traditional Irish songs, many of which she learned growing up as a child in Ireland. SEAN-NOS NUA is that dream fulfilled and it features some of this firebrand's most stellar work. Employing a number of traditional Irish instruments (and musicians), O'Connor treats these songs witha delicate touch befitting her deep love of them. In addition to her reverential treatment of these songs, this native of The Emerald Isle provides detailed track-by-track annotations. Some songs double as prayers ("The Singing Bird") or children's skipping songs ("I'll Tell Me Ma'), while one evokes the heartbreak felt by the spouse of vanished explorer Sir John Franklin ("Lord Franklin"). Among the more familiar songs picked by O'Connor are the delicate "Molly Malone" and equally forlorn "Paddy's Lament." Furthering the Irish cause all the more, O'Connor enlists the legendary Christy Moore to duet on a nearly a capella reading of "Lord Baker." Rich and heartfelt, SEAN-NOS NUA is one of O'Connor's most personal outings since she broke onto the music scene in 1987. SKU: 1076638

This lavish set (a 30-song CD accompanied by a 48-page book and all enclosed in a slipcase) was among Frank Zappa's final projects before his death in late '93. It was assembled from over thirty years of recordings. The earliest are from '59--one is of The Blackouts in which Zappa was the drummer, while the other features Don Van Vliet as vocalist with the Zappa brothers (Frank on Bobby) on guitars. There's a '61 recording of "Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance" (which made its official recorded debut seven years later on The Mothers Of Invention's WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY), audio verite snippets, and film soundtrack music Zappa scored and recorded in '63. There are also solo pieces scored for synthesizers and original versions of pieces recorded by his '70s and '80s bands. From doo-wop to Edgar Varese, this is as close to autobiographical as any one Zappa album can be--and smartly edited and sequenced to boot! SKU: 1005624

De La Mix Tape (Remixes, Rarities And Classics) [PA]
De La Soul: Posdnous, Trugoy, Pasemaster Mase (rap vocals). Additional personnel: Mos Def, Prince Paul, Busta Rhymes (rap vocals); DJ Honda, Da Beatminerz (programming). Producers: Jay Dee; De La Soul; Prince Paul; DJ Honda; Da Beatminerz Compilation Producer: Barry "Rockbarry" Benson. Recording information: 1989 - 2000. Attempting to assemble every De La Soul rarity, remix, guest shot, and B-side onto one collection would be pure folly, as there are simply so many excellent tunes in the group's catalog. Since overwhelming both critics and hip-hop fans in 1989 with their seminal debut, 3 FEET HIGH & RISING, the trio has been one of the more prolific ensembles in rap, constantly collaborating with various members of the loose-knit Native Tongues collective on numerous albums, singles, and assorted compilation tracks. DE LA MIX TAPE doesn't try to be a definitive compilation (nor is it really a traditional mix tape, for that matter), but it cuts a swathe across De La Soul history. Classic album tracks, including "The Magic Number" and "Oodles of O's," share the stage with obscure cuts ("Piles and Piles of Demo Tapes Bi-Da Miles," a jazzy, flute-adorned instrumental version of 1991 single "Ring Ring Ring [Ha Ha Hey]"). Another rarity, the masterfully defiant "Trouble in the Water" (from a 1998 DJ Honda album), proves to be a highlight of this fun, funky journeythrough De La's past. SKU: 6558285
