Djangology 49
Django Reinhardt & The Quintette Of The Hot Club Of France: Django Reinhardt (guitar); Stephane Grappelli (violin); Gianni Safred (piano); Carlo Pecori (bass); Aurelio De Carolis (drums). Recorded in Rome, Italy in January & February 1949. Originally released on RCA (2319). Includes liner notes by Frank Vignola and Don Gold. All tracks have been digitally remastered. A few years after their postwar reunion, Gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and his most illustrious foil and confrere, violinist Stephane Grappelli, recorded perhaps as many as fifty tunes in the space of a couple of months in 1949 in Rome. The Italian rhythm section of piano, bass and drums was probably intended to "modernize" the frontmen's sound, replacing as it did their more Gallic all-string band of the 1930s, the Quintet of the Hot Club of France. But like the two-guitars-and-bass backing Reinhardt and Grappelli pioneered fifteen years earlier, this American-style rhythm section stays out of the way, and violin and guitar are the stars of the show. As with the Quintet, the repertoire is a mix of popular Tin Pan Alley tunes and Reinhardt or Reinhardt-Grappelli concoctions, including versions of "Minor Swing," "Swing 42" and "Djangology." Members Don't Git Weary [Digipak] [Remastered]
Personnel: Max Roach (drums); Andy Bey (vocals); Gary Bartz (alto saxophone); Charles Tolliver (trumpet); Stanley Cowell (piano); Jymie Merritt (electric bass). Producer: Joel Dorn. Reissue producers: Donald Eflman, Naomi Yoshii. Recorded at RCA Studio B, New York, New York in June 1968. Originally released on Atlantic (1510). Includes liner notes by Ed Williams. Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus, New York, New York). Max Roach is difficult, if not impossible, to pigeonhole; the bebop drumming revolution that he and Kenny Clarke spearheaded in the 1940s was merely one period in what would be a long and varied career. This 1968 release finds the ever-evolving drummer in a standard jazz quintet setting. Songs on MEMBERS, DON'T GIT WEARYrange from the funk grooves of "Abstrutions," to the gospel-inflected title track, to the modern post-bop feel of "Absolutions." On the latter, the electric bass colors the song with a decidedly funkier feel. MEMBERS is representative of the emerging late '60s style of jazz that was then developing despite the loss of one of its key innovators, tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. The album hints at changes to come: flux that would cause jazz to collide with rock, R&B, and world music as jazz fusion, or the ultra-intense experimentalism that would finally reach its height in the '70s avant-garde of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. MEMBERS is an album that adds to jazz's great conversation, and for this reason alone, it's worth investigating. SKU: 1076247

On The Waters
Bread: James Griffin (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); David Gates (vocals, guitar, bass); Robb Royer (guitar, flute, keyboards); Mike Botts (drums). Producers: David Gates, James Griffin, Robb Royer. Recorded at Sound Recorders, Hollywood, California. Originally released on Elektra (74076). Includes liner notes by Barry Alfonso. Bread's second album was its commercial breakthrough, and for good reason. The Los Angeles foursome created its signature commercially accessible sound with this album and refined it over its next several releases. Starting with ON THE WATERS, Bread became Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young without the rough edges. The commercial brilliance of this subtle shift is obvious; Bread was one of the first bands with some rock credibilityto be acceptable to the emerging adult-pop demographic that made the Carpenters megastars. ON THE WATERS contains the breakthrough hit "Make it With You," possibly the group's best single, and 11 other soft rock gems, including the lovely "Call on Me." SKU: 1016875

Live - Entertainment Or Death [PA] [Remastered]
Full title: Live: Entertainment Or Death. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Enhancements include the "Wild Side" video. Motley Crue: Vince Neil (vocals); Mick Mars (guitar); Nikki Six (bass); Tommy Lee (drums). Recorded between 1982 & 1999. Includes liner notes by Paul Miles. Long overdue and eagerly awaited by Crueheads and metalfans alike, ENTERTAINMENT OR DEATH is the first live Motley Crue release. And instead of just pulling a couple shows from the group's reunion tour, this package covers Motley Crue's entire career; it is an audio souvenir of one of the most exciting live bands ever. "Looks That Kill" (Fresno '85) is classic Crue and opens this trip down metal memory lane. "Home Sweet Home" (Dallas '98) will have you raising your lighter in the air. Vince Neil's arena war cries never disappoint, and ex-drummer Tommy Lee exclaims "been there wrecked that s##t" before breaking into "Wildside." Lesser-known Crue gems like "Knock 'Em Dead Kid" and "Public Enemy #1" are supplemented by chart-toppers like "Smokin' in the Boy's Room" and "Girls, Girls, Girls." A raucous cover of "Helter Skelter" from the band's early live gigs highlights the set. ENTERTAINMENT is the true Motley live experience, with attitude-driven renditions of the band's best material. The Crue kicks it into high gear on every track. SKU: 1028141

Paul's Boutique
The Beastie Boys: Mike D, Ad-Rock, M.C.A. When The Beastie Boys hit platinum with their debut album, they were instantly labeled the Elvises of rap, accused of being just another bunch of white musicians stealing from black music. But what was overlooked was that the Beasties actually had some interesting ideas to take hip hop to new levels. While in the years to come other white rappers like Vanilla Ice and Jesse Jaymes would prove they were the true cultural thieves, the Beasties defended themselves by recording a seminal rap album, PAUL'S BOUTIQUE. The record was, in fact, so legit that it eroded their commercial appeal in middle America. PAUL'S BOUTIQUE is a sample-fest--a post-modern epic of cut and splice studio wizardry. Taking snippets of music from sources as disparate as Curtis Mayfield, The Beatles, B.D.P., The Ramones and The Jaws soundtrack (as well as countless others), they built songs out of the debris of modern culture. Over these mind-blowing tracks, they weavedtall tales, self-promotional proclamations and sheer non-sense into a singular vision of inspired lunacy. Besides Public Enemy, no one else was producing albums as complex as this. PAUL'S BOUTIQUE sounds two or three years ahead of its time, perhaps this is why the album was considered such a failure upon its release. Whatever the case, there really is no album that sounds quite like this one does; the Beasties returned to the top of the charts a few years later with CHECK YOUR HEAD, but they may never be able to top the originality and depth of their stunning sophomore effort. Strawberries
The Damned includes: Dave Vanian (vocals); Captain Sensible (guitar, bass); Rat Scabies (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Finding their feet again after yet another career misstep, the Damned emerged with STRAWBERRIES, their fifth studio album in as many years. With their line-up more or less stable atthis point, it features Dave Vanian's more assured vocals and the more-pop-by-the-minute keyboards and guitars of Captain Sensible. STRAWBERRIES evokes the best of the Stranglers with a touch of XTC thrown in. Well produced by the band themselves, aurally it's a great improvement over previous efforts, and even includes a lyric sheet. From the catch-a-fire punk of "Ignite," the album moves on to new-wave pop with "Generals" and "Stranger on the Town." "Dozen Girls" foreshadows the gothic Damned of the near future, while "The Dog," STRAWBERRIES' most interesting track, fortifies their creepy vampiric image. For un-cynical punks in love, there's also the surprisingly bouncy un-cynical love song "The Pleasure and the Pain," and its companion "Life Goes On." An enjoyable album and highly recommended. Homework
Personnel: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo. Producers: Thomas Bangalter, Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo. Recorded at Daft House, Paris, France. "Da Funk" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. "Around The World" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, the two French twenty-something DJs who make up Daft Punk, are relentless dance-music aficionados and historians. And unlike many of their contemporaries, their interests don't just lie in the electronic beats that have been rockin' the clubs since the mid-80s. The two knob-twiddlers are just as well-versed in Giorgio Moroder's Eurodisco grooves, Chic, and the old-school rhythms of Afrika Bambaata and the Sugarhill Records catalog, as they are in the Chicago house and Detroit techno traditions. When they're not assembling catchy-as-hell bits of electro-pop ("Around The World"), throwing down slabs of minimalist funk ("Da Funk"), or marrying Miami bass to Kraftwerkian blips ("Oh Yeah"), Homem-Christo and Bangalter try to impart a little knowledge. On "Teachers," they use a Ween-esque distorted vocal line to name-check a broad list of influences that includes Brian Wilson, Dr. Dre and Armand Van Helden. Their broad focus, utopian determination and, of course, their way with a beat earn Daft Punk's HOMEWORK a well-deserved "A". SKU: 1006544

Suspension And Displacement
Djam Karet: Gayle Ellett (guitar, keyboards, percussion, tapes); Mike Henderson (electric 6 & 12-string guitars, keyboards); Chuck Oken (keyboards, drums, programming); Henry J. Osborne (keyboards, bass, percussion). Recorded between July 1990 & April 1991. After the bedlam of BURNING THE HARD CITY, Djam Karet offers this amazing hunk of post-ambient rock for the listener's respite and pleasure. The band has retained the collective instrumentation from BURNING, but said sound tools have been re-tuned to receive sounds emitting from a parallel universe. Synths andguitars set up intricate, spiraling loops over which the tinkling of bells, logdrums, and assorted, mysterious percussives writhe and curl. And that's just track one. "8:15--No Safe Place" glides upon a raft of probing, quiescent guitars, while electronics and the pluck of chimes glisten in the atmosphere--entering and exiting. An air of menace soon intrudes, as synth swells rise in urgency. The tension reaches critical mass, and it all crashes to earth, the runoff of melted guitars re-emerging in a cooling lava flow. "Severed Moon" begins with distant guitar echo as light beams of percussion intrude. Then it's off to the knife-edge of Earth, where a ceremonial rite is ripped from the twilight of time. From there on in, it's up to you to reap from the multi-hued whirlpool of sound and vision contained within one of the more criminally underrated "rock" records of the '90s. SKU: 1038291

King Of The Delta Blues Singers Vol.1
This reissue of KING OF THE DELTA BLUES SINGERS contains 1 previously unreleased track. Solo performer: Robert Johnson (vocals, acoustic guitar). Producer: Don Law. LP reissue producer: Frank Driggs. CD reissue producer: Lawrence Cohn. Recorded in San Antonio, Texas on November 23 & 26-27, 1936 and Dallas, Texas on June 19-20, 1937. Original LP released on Columbia Records (1961). Includes original liner notes by Frank Driggs. Includes reissue liner notes by Peter Guralnick. Digitally remastered by RobertVosgien (CMS Digital, Pasadena, California). Of all the early blues singers and players, Robert Johnson towers above all the others. He lived fast, died young, and left a small body of music that laid the groundwork for electric blues as well as rock & roll. Johnson had a unique voice, capable of deep growlings and grumblings and eerie, almost ghostly wails and moans. His guitar illustrated his stories, making any other instruments irrelevant. His songs conveyed a sense of a man trying to outrun a pack of demons ("Hell Hound on My Trail," "Cross Road Blues"), were autobiographical ("I'm a Steady Rollin' Man") and, of course, dealt with love troubles ("From Four Until Late," "Love in Vain"). Johnson's songs have become blues standards--"Sweet Home Chicago," "Dust My Broom," and many others have been adapted by many rock bands, from the Rolling Stones' version of "Love in Vain" to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "They're Red Hot." If you want to hear the main architect of the twin dynasties of blues and rock & roll (who also influenced folk and country music), Robert Johnson is the man, and KING is a beautifully annotated introduction. Tracks
TRACKS includes 56 previously unreleased masters, many of which were recorded during the BORN IN THE U.S.A. and THE RIVER sessions, as well as ten B-sides. Personnel includes: Bruce Springsteen, Miami Steve Van Zandt, Clarence Clemons, Roy Bittan, Garry Tallent, Max Weinberg, Danny Federici, Nils Lofgren. Includes liner notes by Bruce Springsteen. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. This handsomely packaged box set goes a long way towards illuminating the darker corners of Springsteen's recording career. Apparently, almost every time the Boss went into the studio he recorded more songs than he could possibly fit onto a record, and most of those extra tracks languished in obscurity. The four-disc TRACKS aims to change that. The amazing thing about the never-before-heard material here (and the little-known b-sides also included) is that most of the songs are just as impressive as the ones ultimately chosento go on Springsteen's albums. Spanning various phases of his career, the selections chronicle Springsteen's journey from Dylan-inspired folk-poet to funky working class hero to larger-than-life rock icon, and each era is given a new coat of paint via the previously unreleased songs that represent it. Of special note is the innovative manner in which the package itself was put together, the box folding out to reveal a four-cornered tapestry of candid Springsteen photographs that pull out to expose the four glorious discs underneath.
