Royal Society, The
Anarchic Brighton "gothabilly" band unleash their cacophonous second album, following 2002's 'Horse Of The Dog'. Mixing up influences from punk, metal, goth, rockabilly and Vaudevillian cabaret, this is a blast of discordant, barely contained insanity with a healthy dose of pitch black humour. Produced by Chris Goss (Kyuss, Queens Of TheStone Age), it includes the singles 'I Could Be An Angle', 'Rise Of The Eagles' and 'Mister Mental'. SKU: 6575363

Ethiopian Knights
Personnel: Donald Byrd (trumpet); Harold Land (tenor saxophone); Thurman Green (trombone); Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone); William Henderson III (acoustic & electric pianos); Joe Sample (organ); Don Peake, Greg Poree, David T. Walker (guitar); Wilton Felder (electric bass); Edward Greene (drums); Bobbye Porter Hall (congas, tambourine). Producer: George Butler. Reissue producer: Bob Belden. Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California on August 25 & 26, 1971. Includes liner notes by Bill Quinn and Bob Belden. Digitally remastered by Ron McMaster. At about the same time that Miles Davis' crew was populating the jazz world with their revolutionary fusion-isms, trumpeter Donald Byrd had returned from a trip to Africa and undergone an artistic epiphany. His Afrocentric explorations resulted in a number of beautiful albums, including 1971's ETHIOPIAN KNIGHTS, which postdated his incomparable hard bop work with the likes of Sonny Rollins and Pepper Adams, and landed just before his renowned album BLACKBYRD and later ventures into radio-friendly R&B. ETHIOPIAN KNIGHTS stretches into experimental BITCHES BREW territory with rock and soul-jazz rhythms, electronic keyboards, elastic structures and a battery of African percussion. Byrd employs a stellar line-up of West Coast jazz funkateers for these sessions, including the Jazz Crusaders' Joe Sample and Wilton Felder, and Bobby Hutcherson with members of his band. The vibe here is loose and organic, with full dosesof driving funk. ETHIOPIAN KNIGHTS fills in an important chapter in the Donald Byrd story and makes for funky good listening. SKU: 1003968

Twin Peaks
Music composed by Angelo Badalamenti. Lyrics written by David Lynch. Personnel includes: Julee Cruise (vocals); Angelo Badalamenti (piano, synthesizer); Vinnie Bell, Eddie Dixon (electric guitar); Al Regini (flute, clarinet, tenor saxophone); Eddie Daniels (flute, clarinet); Kinny Landrum (synthesizer); Grady Tate (drums). David Lynch's TWIN PEAKS was, among other things, the first series to bring surrealismto prime time television. Angelo Badalamenti's score, on the other hand, was the first to introduce downtown post-modernism. Badalamenti's harmonic palette was straight out of '50s rock. But the resultant music was slow and doomy, a collage of shimmering synths, twangy Duane Eddy guitars, and finger snaps that seemed uncannily sinister. Highlights include the popular "Twin Peaks Theme," which manages the remarkable feat of being at once lush and minimalist, and "Into The Night," an unsettling combination of innocence and lasciviousness as sung by Lynch protege Julee Cruise. Swing, The
INXS: Kirk Pengilly (vocals, guitar, saxophone); Jon Farriss (vocals, drums, percussion); Michael Hutchence (vocals); Andrew Farriss (guitar, keyboards); Tim Farriss (guitar, bass); Garry Gary Beers (bass). After the streamlined dance-rock of their US/UK debut SHABOOH SHOOBAH, INXS took an unexpected left turn into murkier waters with 1984's THE SWING. Although the album contains a couple of hints of the massively successful albums to follow--the jerky "I Send A Message" is basically a blueprint for smoother hits like "What You Need" and "Need You Tonight"--most of THE SWING is arty and sometimes impenetrable. The swirling, nearly psychedelic "Johnson's Aeroplane," as melodic as it is, ranks among the oddest tracks the Australian sextet ever cut, and the atmospheric finale "All the Voices" comes close behind. The mild quirkiness works more often than not, and at times, it suggests directions that might have been more fruitfully explored. The Bryan Ferryish "Burn For You" is a complete delight, and the Nile Rodgers-produced "The Original Sin" is a much more satisfying rock-funk fusion than Duran Duran's contemporary Rodgers collaboration, "The Reflex." Sumday
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Grandaddy: Jason Lytle (vocals, guitar); Burtch, Dryden, Fairchild, Garcia. Picking up where 2000's celebrated SOPHTWARE SLUMP left off, SUMDAY continues to mine that particular veinof spacey, '60s-influenced indie rock practiced by the likes of the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, et al. That pleasantly stoned, slightly detached, wonder-of-it-all feeling is certainly present throughout the album. A mildly bemused attitude towards the world is at the center of the lyrical excursions, married to accessible, pure-pop moves. The debatable alt-country flavor that some heard on SLUMP is essentially absent here, with the balance tipped more in favor of that classic straight-eighths indie guitar style married to some gorgeous atmospheric production touches and some first-class melodic songwriting. With the combination of heavenly harmonies, hooky melodies, and kooky electronic effects, one is tempted to imagine what might have happened if the Electric Light Orchestra started out in the mid-'90s in a basement with a four-track and went on from there. Soul's Core
Personnel: Shawn Mullins (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano, clay drum, tambourine, percussion, handclaps, loops); Mike West (electric guitar, banjo, banjolin); David Patterson (electric guitar, strings); Rob Gal (electric guitar, loops); Myshkin (mandolin, washboard, background vocals); Brandon Bush (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Clavinet, Hammond B-3 organ, organ, handclaps, loops); Marty Kearns (HammondB-3 organ); Dave LaBruyere, Don McCollister (bass); Kevin Leahy, Travis Aaron McNabb (drums); Chad Franscoviak, Glenn Matullo (handclaps, background vocals); Shelley Yankus, Jen Graham (background vocals). Engineers: Glenn Matullo, Don McCollister, Russ Fowler. Recorded at Orphan Studios and Southern Living At It's Finest, Atlanta, Georgia; Nickel & Dime Studios, Decatur, Georgia. "Lullaby (Rock-A-Bye)" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. Though he's all made up for late'90s MTV exposure, Shawn Mullins turns out to be an old-fashioned troubadour at heart. Sure, there are hip-hop inflected drum loops, tastefully retro-sounding keyboards and stylish, artful string arrangements, but Mullins' main concern is chronicling his experiences and observations as he moves through a complex, confusing world. Most of the songs are based on acoustic guitar underpinning, and Mullin's appealing drawl is at the center of it all, delivering lyrics full of careful detail from his traveler's bag of tunes. The liner notes even give details of where and why some of the songs were written, a sure sign of a man with itinerant balladeer blood. Hell, there's even a decent cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," what more do you want? Did we mention that Mullin's isn't afraid to get funky? There's more to SOUL'S CORE than just a flavor-of-the-week mindset. Try it and see. SKU: 1002080

Bossanova
The Pixies: Black Francis (vocals, guitar); Kim Deal (vocals, bass); David Lovering (vocals, drums); Joey Santiago (guitar). Additional personnel: Robert F. Brunner (theremin). Recorded at Cherokee, Aire and Silverlake, Los Angeles, California and Hansa Ton, Berlin, Germany. With a keen sense of the absurd, Black Francis's (now Frank Black) Pixies were the consummate darlings of the music press--no surprise, with their refreshing mix of overblown guitars, discreet nods to the surreal and a vibrant grasp of pure pop that offered a luscious blow to the senses on execution. "Cecilia Ann" stood somewhere between spandexmetal and Beach Blanket Bingo, while the deranged singalong of "Is She Weird" sat alongside the first single, "Velouria," underlining their ability to write timeless singles that filled the head and sent toes tapping incessantly out of time. A recent compilation confirmed their standing. SKU: 1005380

Denis
Blondie: Chris Stein (vocals, guitar); Clem Burke (vocals, drums); Deborah Harry (vocals); Nigel Harrison (guitar); Jimmy Destri (keyboards); Gary Valentine, Frank Infante (bass). Producers: Mike Chapman, Richard Gottehrer. Though Blondie was part of the initial crop ofbands to emerge from New York's CBGB's, they made it big in the UK before achieving worldwide success. This compilation draws its title from one of the band's early British hits, an infectious homage to the girl-group sounds of the early '60s. DENIS does a nice job of moving through the various stages of this incredibly eclectic band's career. From the Jamaican lilt of "The Tide is High" and "Die Young, Stay Pretty" to the '50s crooning of "In the Flesh" and the straight-ahead rock of "Hanging on the Telephone," all the facets of Blondie's talents are represented here. Novices should be alerted that this is not a greatest-hits package. Many of the songs are obscure denizens of the Blondie repertoire, but that just means you get to hear another side of the band and explore the breadth of their wide-eyed vision in a bit more depth. All Saints
All Saints: Nicole, Melanie, Natalie, Shaznay Lewis (vocals). Additional personnel includes: K. Gee (various instruments); Karl Gordon (keyboards, drum programming); John Benson, Cyril McNammon (keyboards); Sean Cox (keyboard programming). Producers include: Cameron McVey, Magnus Fiennes, Karl Gordon, Johnny Douglas, Neville Henry. Engineers include: Marcellas Fernandes,Ruadhri Cushnan. All Saints manages to distill their pop, hip-hop and soul influences into a kinder, gentler blend without giving up the groove. The rap segments are disarming, not alarming and the sex has it's place but it's not in your face. Velvety vocal harmonies float over sparse, gritty instrumentals furnished with traditional hip-hop scratch and sample underpinnings. This album has a varied range of feelings and rythyms, with a good balance of ballads and up tunes. It goes from flirtatious to soul-searching, mischievous to mellow, but always party-perfect. Their British chart topper "I Know Where It's At" is a frisky and infectious dance tune, contrasting their follow-up hit "Never Ever," a heartfelt girl group anthem. All in all, ALL SAINTS is a pleasant invitation into a girl's heart; fun but not frivolous; sincere but not somber; innocent but not ignorant. You go, girls! SKU: 1005530

Is This Desire
Personnel: Polly Jean Harvey (vocals, guitar); Eric Drew Feldman (various instruments); John Parish, Joe Gore (guitar); Jeremy Hogg (slide guitar); Richard Hunt (violin); Terry Edwards (trumpet); Mick Harvey (bass); Rob Ellis (drums). Recorded at Small World Studios, Yeovil, England and Whitefield Street Studios, London, England from April 1997 to April 1998. IS THIS DESIRE? was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Author of a brand of feminine angst that far predates the Alanis nation, Polly Jean Harvey brings a heretofore-unseen level of drama to the pop form. She is possessed ofa rage that is finely focused, and an artistic sensibility that injects her music with a disarming, highly literate edge. Her fifth album, IS THIS DESIRE? finds Harvey delivering on the promise of her earlier albums: without losing any of the rage of her earlier, more guitar-driven work, she further refines her psychotic tales of obsession and despair, all the while laying down a sonic groundwork which is always experimental and unexpected, including a heavy dose of electronica. Harvey's trademark whisper-to-a-scream vocal style is present throughout IS THIS DESIRE. "The Sky Lit Up" sees a casual, almost spoken vocal erupt slowly into an otherworldy wail, accented perfectly by wild guitar textures. "Catherine" is a sublime, evocative ballad, whose vitriolic lyrics are juxtaposed against a soft, rolling backing track. "The Garden" skips along at a determined pace, with keyboard textures and swelling strings making it a quintessential PJ Harvey composition: haunting, angry and thoroughly unusual. SKU: 1003509

Plus Four
Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Clifford Brown (trumpet); Richie Powell (piano); George Morrow (bass); Max Roach (drums). Recorded in New York, New York on March 22, 1956. Originally released on Prestige (7038). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler. Following his Chicago sabbatical of 1955-56, Sonny Rollins was spiritually and physically rejuvenated. And on this date, he's clearly inspired by Max Roach and Clifford Brown's depth of spirit. Multi-dimensional re-arrangements of popular songs were a Brown-Roach trademark. "Kiss And Run" is treated to a stop and go intro, then settles into a brisk 4/4, as Rollins, Brown and the perenially underrated Richie Powell fashion long dancing lines. "I Feel A Song Coming On" creates tension by alternating a vamp figure with a swinging release. Rollins takes an immense solo, contrasting chanting figures and foghorn-like long tones with Parker-ish elisions, and Brown answers with buzzing figures and daring harmonic extensions. Then Roach takes things out with sweeping melodic choruses and polyrhythmicfanfares, setting the stage for a torrid tenor-trumpet duel. On "Valse Hot," we have an early example of a successful jazz waltz as Rollins offers up one of his most charming themes. Max Roach treats the European three with the dancing elan of an American four, and Rollins responds by floating in between the beat, syncopating in Monkish stabs and thrusts, as Brown answers with the kind of rhythmically complex, sweetly articulated melodic lines that have inspired every modern trumpeter. Baby's First Beats
Cuddly, indie-rock nursery rhymes with old-school hip-hop beats-you've gotta love it. Throw in some wonderful, wisecrackin', nosethumbin' lyrics that'll crack you up no matter how many times you hear them. BABY'S FIRST BEATS is all that, a bag of fries, and a free Pokemon figure, too. Oh yeah. Put the Busy Signals together with Sukpatch and Kittycraft, and you've got yourself a party. In fact, cute-as-a-button Kittycraft heartthrob Pamela Valfer provides a little crafty kitty background-vocal action on one track. But Howard Hamilton III is really the onlysignal gettin' busy here. He sold his vintage auto and bought a sampler and an 8-track tape deck with the money. Smart move. Your smart move is to buy this disc. And throw your hands in the air like you just don't care. Toxicity
System Of A Down: Serj Tankian (vocals, keyboards): Daron Malakian (guitar, background vocals); Shavo Odadjian (bass); John Dolmayan (drums). Additional personnel: Rick Rubin (piano); Arto Tuncboyaciyan (background vocals). Producers: David Schiffman, Greg Collins, Darren Morr. Engineers: Rick Rubin, Daron Malakian, Serj Tankian. Recorded at Cello Studios, Hollywood, California. "Chop Suey!" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. "Aerials" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Hard Rock Performance. While System of a down are often cast with the nu-metal crowd, their sound is closer to '80s thrash (and even hardcore punk) than to any of the rap-metal hordes. Grinding guitars and death-knell drums may be the order of the day, but they work in service of a highly developed socio-political consciousness. In fact, when he's not lacerating his vocal cords, singer Tankian delivers his rebellious lyrics in a tone reminiscent of infamous Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra.Make no mistake, the thrash quotient on TOXICITY is high enough to satiate even the hungriest headbanger, but System of a Down understands the power of dynamics, often moving from a whisper to a scream over the course of the album (though they obviously spend far more time on the scream end of the spectrum). Additionally, they deliver their eye-gouging riffs with an unerring precision that never devolves into an indistinct blur. This hard-hitting quartet knows how to deliver the hard-rock goods with grace. SKU: 1065211

Includes liner notes by Peter Asher. BEST LIVE finally catches James Taylor in a performance of most of his masterpieces from the GREATEST HITS album. Likewise, signature tunes such as "Fire And Rain," "How Sweet It Is" and "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight" are included because, well, it's a James Taylor show! Third Decade
The Art Ensemble Of Chicago: Joseph Jarman (sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor & baritone saxophones, piccolo, E-flat and C flutes, B-flat and bass clarinets, whistle, bike horn, conch shell, synthesizer, congas, tom-toms, bass steel drum, gong, bells, siren); Roscoe E. Mitchell (soprano, alto, tenor & bass saxophones, piccolo, C flute, B-flat clarinet, whistle, bike horn, bongos, congas, steel drum, gong, wood block, chimes, glockenspiel, bells); Lester Bowie (trumpet, flugelhorn, bass drum, cymbals); Famoudou Don Moye (whistle, bike, long & elephant horns, conch shell, drums, bongos, congas, bass steel drum, tympani, djimbe, djun-djun, cymbals, gong, chimes, chekere, wood block, belafon); Malachi Favors Maghostut (melodica, acoustic & electric basses, bass steel drum, cymbals, belafon, percussion, cans). Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer, Ludwigsburg, Germany in June 1994. Includes liner notes by Joseph Jarman. Like the Art Ensemble of Chicago's outstanding '70s work, THE THIRD DECADE features scintillatingchemistry between trumpeter Lester Bowie, multi-faceted reedmen Joseph Jarman and Roscoe E. Mitchell, bassist Malachi Favors, and drummer Don Moye, while demonstrating the Ensemble's unique, texture- and space-conscious approach to free jazz. The music here is surprisingly tonal, without sacrificing any of the group's trademark improvisatory energy or rhythmic and dynamic flexibility. Jarman's hymn-like opener, "Prayer for Jimbo Kwesi" (the first black officer to serve and die in the British military) creates an ever-opening structure through which variations on the dominant theme float like ghosts. Mitchell's "The Bell Piece" employs chimes, gongs and glockenspiels to create a swirling, discordant effect, and Moye's "Third Decade," an all-percussion piece, references the African roots of the group's music. The Ensemble likes to play with and expand the notion of genre, too, as in the slightly warped ballroom swing of "Walking In the Moonlight," and Bowie's "Zero," which wraps a traditional head-solo-head structure around more free-form instrumental approaches. Overall, THE THIRD DECADE is another example of the longevity and innovative strength of this seminal collective. SKU: 1015680
