Reflection Eternal
Personnel includes: Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek, De La Soul, Kool G Rap, Xzibit, Rah Digga, Mos Def (rap vocals); Les Nubians (vocals); Dave Chapelle (spoken vocals): Owen Brown (fiddle); Teodross Avery (saxophone); Derrick Gardner (trumpet); Weldon Irvine (keyboards); Bassi Kolo Percussion Group (percussion); Chris Crossfader (prgramming); Kendra Ross (background vocals). Producers: Hi Tek, Talib Kweli, Weldon Irvine. With a back-to-the-streets, grassroots approach, rapper Talib Kwali and producer Hi-Tek have constructed a simple, pure hip-hop album. Their formula is simple: hot banging beats with novel samples, combined with slick, stylish street corner rhymes. Joined by a who's who of hip-hop like De La Soul ("Soul Rebels"), Mos Def ("This Means You"), and Kool G Rap ("Ghetto Afterlife"), REFLECTION ETERNAL is packed with everything a hip-hop fan could want. A notable cut is "Down For the Count," which features RahDigga, Xzibit and a cameo from boxing champion Lennox Lewis, here performing in something of a different style to his showbiz colleague Oscar De La Hoya. If you're looking for pure hip-hop, REFLECTION ETERNAL is for you. SKU: 1082519

American Psycho
The Misfits includes: Michael Graves (vocals); Doyle (guitar); Jerry Only (bass); Dr. Chud (drums). Although the authenticity of the Misfits without the distinctive Elvis-in-Hell vocal operatics of founding father Glenn Danzig is somewhat doubtful,AMERICAN PSYCHO is a worthy successor to the band's legacy. New vocalist Michael Graves manages a fair evocation of Danzig's bellow, and the traditional backing vocals are still in place, courtesy of Jerry and Doyle. Most importantly, the songwriting manages to evoke the classic Misfits sound without getting derivative. "Crimson Ghost," "Mars Attacks," and the title track wouldn't have sounded out of place on EARTH A.D., and "Walk Among Us" evokes that classic album without sullying its memory. The guitars are a little meatier and a little more metallic, but the feel of the Misfits is here. Until a real reunion, this will do nicely. SKU: 1015409

All Time Greatest Hits
For thosenot inclined towards Bennett's 4-disc anthology 40 YEARS , this two-LPs-on-one-disc collection from 1972 is a solid survey of all the singer's hits going all the way back to 1951, including "Rags To Riches" and the castanet-driven "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams." 1962's "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" makes it's appearance midway and the increase in confidence and authority in Bennett's performances after this milestone is readily apparent. From this moment on, Tony Bennett "owns" just about any song he sings, as his definitive versions of "Who Can I Turn To," "The Shadow Of Your Smile" and "For Once In My Life" amply demonstrate. Welcome Interstate Managers
Fountains Of Wayne: Adam Schlesinger (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Chris Collingwood (vocals, guitar); Jody Porter (vocals); Brian Young (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: James Iha, Jen Tryin (guitar); Ronnie Buttacavol (trumpet, flugelhorn). Producers: Adam Schlesinger, Chris Collingwood, Mike Dennen. Recorded at Stratosphere Sound, New York, New York; Q Division, Somerville, Massachusetts; The Clubhouse, Rhineback, New York. Following a four-year hiatus that found Fountains of Wayne going from Atlantic Records to S-Curve Records, New Jersey's favorite power-pop outfit delivers WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS, the band's third opus. FOW does an excellent job of capturing the suburban zeitgeist that dates back to the band's name (derived from a Garden State backyard fixtures emporium) and carrying on from 1999's excellent UTOPIA PARKWAY. Wielding boatloads of hooks and harmonies, Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood delight with songs about high school sweethearts (the melancholy "Hackensack"), a good woman's love in the face of a crap job (a sweet, semi-acoustic "Hey Julie"), and exploding cell phones (an anthemic "Mexican Wine"). With its handclaps, rad harmonies and perky synths, the irresistible "Stacy's Mom" fantasizes about a best friend's mom, and seems tailor-made for any future American Pie sequels. Other pop manna includes the Beatlesque "Fire Island," the country-fried "Hung Up On You" (featuring guest lap steel player Robert Randolph), and the Brit-pop psychedelia of "No Better Place." WELCOMEINTERSTATE MANAGERS easily notches a place on any Best of 2003 list. SKU: 1086718

Good Mourning [Digipak]
Alkaline Trio: Matt Skiba (vocals, guitar); Daniel Andriano (vocals, bass); Derek Grant (drums). Though most of the songs on the Alkaline Trio's GOOD MOURNING don't seem to be literally about death, titles like "Fatally Yours" and "All On Black" (not to mention the pictures of crosses and white lilies that adorn the disc's packaging) suggest a rather fatalistic listening experience. In this case, first impressions are only partly accurate. Over the course of a half-dozen solid albums, the Alkaline Trio has positioned itself as a kind of anti-Blink 182; sonically, the band deals in the same stripped-down vocal harmony-laden pop-punk, but trades the lyrical frat boy frivolity for stark, serious ruminationson interpersonal relationships' most angst-ridden moments. Here, the trio continues to refine its approach, delivering every tune with a single-minded earnestness that practically defines the emo-core aesthetic. SKU: 1083515

Ultimate Sin
Also available in a 3-pack with DIARY OF A MADMAN and BARK AT THE MOON. Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Jake E. Lee (guitar); Mike Moran (keyboards); Phil Soussan (bass); Randy Castillo (drums). Recorded at Townhouse Studios & Air Studios, London, England; Davout Studios, Paris, France. Digitally remastered by Brian Lee & Bob Ludwig. Ozzy Osbourne's 1983 release, BARK AT THE MOON, revealed that keyboards were becoming an integral ingredient in his music. On his next release, THE ULTIMATE SIN, keyboards were used even more extensively, resulting in Ozzy's most commercially accessible work. Despite the fact that many longtime fans resented the album's pop-metalleanings, THE ULTIMATE SIN became Osbourne's fastest-selling album to that point. It was also the last Ozzy Osbourne album to feature guitarist Jake E. Lee. The most renowned song on THE ULTIMATE SIN remains the popular video/single "Shot in the Dark." Other standouts included the anti-nuclear war tracks "Thank God for the Bomb" and "Killer of Giants" (the latter was the album's working title for quite some time), as well as the title track and "Lightning Strikes," which were both popular MTV videos as well. Although Ozzy enjoyed his greatest commercial success to that point with this record, he returned to his more familiar heavy metal tendencies of yore on his next studio release, 1989's NO REST FOR THE WICKED. Irv Gotti Presents The Remixes [PA]
The hip-hop impresario earned his stripes by producing the likes of DMX and Nas, but itson his own label, Murder Inc., that he's truly come into his own as a player to rival the likes of P. Diddy or Dr. Dre. Not one to let a trend pass him by, Gotti moves in on the remix craze and shows the rest of the gang how its done. Gathering together some of the finest talent in his impressive stable, he presents a collection of tunes that mix the fresh with the agreeably familiar. From the R&B siren cooing of Ashanti (the hit "Unfoolish") to the hard-hitting gangsta rhyme-spitting Ja Rule ("No One Does it Better Remix"), Irv's remixes hit hard and fast. The participation of some other famous friends like Mary J. Blige and Toni Braxton doesn't hurt either. SKU: 1077670

Iaora Tahiti
Mouse On Mars: Andi Toma, Jan St. Werner. Additional personnel: Nobuko Sagai (vocals); Wolfgang Flur, Dodo Nkishi (drums). IAORA TAHITI, the follow-up to Mouse On Mars's 1994 debut VULVALAND, finds the band's multi-textured techno-pop refined to a high art. The German-based duo takes its cue from its Krautrock forebears, using spacey, insistent beats and grooves as an anchor for its smooth analogue language and digital chittering. The first two tracks, "Stereomission" and "Kompod," areexpansive, loping compositions founded on fluid, burbling basslines. "Achunkel" sounds like ghosts playing drums in a cybernetic junkyard. "Bib" plows a swirling ambient vortex with pulse-quickening techno rhythms. The morphing bubble-scape of "Papa, Antoine" suggests a breeding ground alive with emergent microorganisms. These are dense, abstract sound collages of the first order, cerebral, intriguing, and challenging, without sacrificing rhythmic accessibility or the occasional melodic fragment. It might be said that IAORA TAHITI is one of the finest releases of its kind, were it not so strikingly unique. SKU: 1006363

This Is Our Music
THIS IS OUR MUSIC is available along with Galaxie 500's two other full-length albums on the 4-CD box set GALAXIE 500 (Rykodisc 10355). Galaxie 500: Dean Wareham (vocals, guitar); Naomi Yang (vocals, bass); Damon Krukowski (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Kramer (flute, background vocals). Recorded at Noise New York, New York, New York in 1990. Includes liner notes by Byron Coley. Originally released on Rough Trade. On THIS IS OUR MUSIC, Galaxie 500's third and final album, the band continue their deliberately paced, three-chord, Velvet Underground-influenced popproject. Though there's little here to distinguish the album from the group's previous efforts (save perhaps their strikingly straight-faced cover of Yoko Ono's "Listen, The Snow Is Falling"--a remarkable feat in itself), THIS IS OUR MUSIC delivers spare, introspective tunes characterized by ghostly moods, 4/4 guitar strums and Dean Wareham's charmingly unaffected, drowsy vocals. Surreal lyrics and simple, haunting guitar lines make songs like "Hearing Voices" and "Spook," both lovely and oddly poignant. Shortly after the release of this album, Wareham left Galaxie 500 to mine a similar musical vein with his band Luna. SKU: 5047250

Dressed Up Like Nebraska
Personnel: Josh Rouse (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, trombone); Neilson Hubbard (vocals); Ned Henry (guitar, slide guitar, violin); David Henry (cello, bass, background vocals); Graham Spice (trumpet); George Nicholson (organ); Steve Allen (Wurlitzer piano); Jason Moon Wilkins (bass); David Gehrke (drums, tambourine). The song-stories that comprise DRESSED UP LIKE NEBRASKA echo witha yearning brand of melancholy, and sound like pure roots rock curiously tinged with hints of 80's Brit-pop. Rouse's vocals, lyrics, and instrumentation are all understated, possessing a strange, rough loveliness. He is able to evoke the most subtle of emotions within his deceptively straightforward, guitar-led songs. Arrangements feature liberal use of cello and violin, and there is a laconic feel reminiscent of Cowboy Junkies (perhaps influenced by the collaboration of producer-musician David Henry, who has worked with the Junkies). Every song shines with an individual, unforgettable story, from the mournful "Lavina," about a woman longing for connection, to the just-out-of-reach beloved in the graceful title tune. SKU: 1004981

Insomniac
Green Day: Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar); Mike Dirnt (vocals, bass); Tre Cool (drums). If Nirvana burst the dam that kept punk rock at bay in the '80s, Green Day--with their third album, DOOKIE--were the first all-consuming flood to hit the charts. Brandishing old school Ramones and Clash riffs, the Berkeley, CA trio made out like bandits, selling nearly ten million albums, scaling mainstream magazine covers and hijacking rock-festival spotlights from established acts. But judging from the lyrical contents of INSOMNIAC, bringing punk to the malls hasn't been a very satisfying experience for singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong. Throughout, he rails at the moribund state of youth culture and his place in it, as bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool speed up this anger to a frenetic pace. The disses fly every which way--at well-to-doers copping poses ("Brat"), at girlfriends who just don't understand ("Stuart And The Ave."), towards the world at-large ("Panic Song"), and, most of all, at himself. As though aware that his band helped make a sacred lifestyle fashionable, Billie Joe demeans his existence in song after song--unable toeven sleep in peace with himself. For the disenfranchised listener, these are the ABCs of self-hate rebellion. Judging from the catchiness of his songs, this predicament isn't likely to end soon. "Geek Stink Breath," a heavy, mid-tempo rumble in the manner of the Sex Pistols' "Sub-Mission"; "Panic Song," with its frenzied "Pinball Wizard"-like build-up, and the fired-up, pop fury of "All Wound Up," all embody the very principals that make the punk lessons of 1977 so attractive today: simplicity, hooks, a lack of pretension, and a disdain for authority. On INSOMNIAC, Green Day puts those lessons to use yet again--their platinum nightmares are sure to follow. SKU: 1003519

MTV Unplugged
10,000 Maniacs: Natalie Merchant (vocals, piano); Rob Buck (acoustic guitar); Dennis Drew (piano, Hammond organ, pump organ); Steven Gustafson (acoustic bass); Jerome Augustyniak (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Bill Dillon (acoustic & slide guitars, mandolin); Richie Stearns (banjo); Morgan Fichter (violin, background vocals); Mary Ramsey (viola, background vocals); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Atsuko Sato, Kim Laskowski (bassoon); Amanda Kramer (piano, pump organ); Jerry Marotta (percussion). Engineers: Ed Thacker, Jay Vicari, Mike Scott. Recorded at Sony Music Studios, New York. Recorded during the 1993 tour supporting the OUR TIME IN EDENalbum, MTV UNPLUGGED was the last 10,000 Maniacs album to feature co-founder and primary vocalist Natalie Merchant. Robert Buck's sterling guitar playing still forms the center of the band's sound--especially on the stripped down version of "Don't Talk," from the band's watershed album, IN MY TRIBE. Another standout track is "Eat for Two" (from BLIND MAN'S ZOO), which is much slower than the studio version and pairs a full string section with Merchant's lyrics about unplanned pregnancy. The album focuses heavily on material from OUR TIME, an album that featured Dennis Drew's keyboards prominently. Drew's playing shines here as well and both "Gold Rush Brides" and "Jezebel" are highlights. Along with an excellent take on "Stockton Gala Days," these three songs are proof that the Maniacs gave their live set some serious thought, in many cases improving on their studio versions. A cover version of "Because the Night," a song made famous by Patti Smith, gave the band an unlikely hit single. For those interested, the cellist and backup vocalist on this album, Mary Ramsey, became Merchant's permanent replacement. SKU: 1005147

Adventure (Remastered & Expanded)
Television: Tom Verlaine (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Richard Lloyd (guitar, background vocals); Fred Smith (bass, background vocals); Billy Ficca (drums). Recorded at SoundMasters and Record Plant, New York, New York. Originally released on Elektra (133). Includes liner notes by Alan Licht. Television's second album arrived a year after the band's remarkable 1977 debut, MARQUEE MOON. The eight songs again feature the intertwining guitars of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd in a way that recalls both the glory days of San Francisco ballroom bands and the finesse of shimmering pop music. In the late '70s, Television was lumped together with other bands that came out of a New York City scene that had an epicenter at the club CBGB. As time has passed, the band has truly become an entity unto itself. Television's music shows none of the dulling effects of age, and its first two albums are essential. SKU: 1087267

Wednesday Morning 3am [Remastered]
Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded on March 10-31, 1964. Originally released on ColumbiaRecords (9049). Includes liner notes by Art Garfunkel & Bud Scoppa. When Paul Simon fled New York for England in the early '60s, he was leaving behind a former life as part of doo-wop duo Tom and Jerry in search of a more sophisticated folk sound, following the trend for intelligent collegiate types at the time. In England he met and was affected by progressive folkies like Jackson C. Frank and Davy Graham, and developed his own sound. Simon & Garfunkel's debut album captures a couple of young, often cerebral, unfailingly earnest singers trying to create something new under the sun. The combination of creatively arranged folk standards and embryonic Simon originals sounds somewhat naive now, but is still affecting. The standout is the tune that--in a rearranged version on their next album, announcing the arrival of folk-rock--would make them stars and help set their musical course: the first great alienation anthem, "The Sounds of Silence." Original Bad Company Anthology, The
THE ORIGINAL BAD CO. ANTHOLOGY includes several previously unreleased tracks including four tracks recorded in 1998. Bad Company: Paul Rodgers (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Mick Ralphs (guitar); Boz Burrell (bass); Simon Kirke (drums). Engineers include: Robin Black, Ron Nevison, Chris Kimsey. Recorded between November 1973 and November 1998. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. Digitally remastered by Steve Croxford, Jack "Jacko" Adams, and Walter Coehlo (Masterpiece Mastering, London, England). Bad Company's formation in 1973 signaled the arrival of a blues-rock supergroup. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke came from Free, guitarist Mick Ralphs was Ian Hunter's foil in MottThe Hoople and Boz Burrell had done time with King Crimson. ANTHOLOGY collects many of their well-known hits/classic rock staples ("Can't Get Enough," "Shooting Star," "Rock And Roll Fantasy") on two discs alongside four new tracks recorded in 1998. Bad Company was the first signing to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label. Songs such as "Bad Company" and "Good Lovin' Gone Bad" benefited from his Paul Rodger's rich, bluesy vocal delivery. Much of the band's material reflected a fascination with the Old West, particularly numbers such as "Deal With The Preacher" and "Whiskey Bottle." Other, overlooked numbers include "Silver, Blue And Gold" and "Oh Atlanta" (a favorite of Alison Krauss, who's been known to do it in concert). The newly recorded material finds the band returning to their blues-rock roots as they prepare to saddle up for the new millennium. SKU: 1001291

Nature Of A Sista
Personnel: Queen Latifah (rap); Scringer Ranks (vocals); Paul Shapiro (saxophone); Dave Bellochio, Shane "The Doctor" Faber, Doctor Illington, Nevelle Hodge (keyboards); Funk Master Oli (bass); Simple Pleasure (background vocals); Safari Sister Swatch. Producers: Naughty By Nature, Luis "Louie Louie" Vega, Soul Shock, CutFather, K-Cut, Nevelle Hodge, Queen Latifah. Engineers: Shane "The Doctor" Faber, Funk Master Oli, Anton Pukshanksky. The queen of all media hit her stride with her third release, NATURE OF A SISTA. Fighting for respect for the female rapper, Latifah unleashes her lyrical fury over a set of old school beats, produced by the likes of Naughty By Nature and Luis Vega. In an era when rap was dominated by male braggadocio and gangsta posing, Latifah brought a fresh female energy to the genre. Queen Latifah gets the party started right with "Latifah's Had It Up 2 Here," her manifesto on the state of hip hop. On "Nuff' Of The Ruff' Stuff" she gives voice to the frustration that the sisters were feelingwith the disrespect they were facing. On "Fly Girl" she dismisses men who view her only as a sex object with the line "Easy love is something that I ain't/besides I don't know you from a can of paint." And adding a new dimension to her talent, Latifah showcases her crystal clear singing voice on "Give Me Your Love." SKU: 1087299

Their Satanic Majesties Request [SACD] [Remastered]
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Bill Wyman (vocals, bass); Keith Richards (guitar, background vocals); Brian Jones (guitar, various instruments); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel includes: J.P. Jones (strings); Nicky Hopkins (piano). Part druggy experiment, part musical rivalry with the Fab Four, and a total anomaly in the Rolling Stones' catalogue,THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES REQUEST contains at least three psychedelic classics in "Citadel," "She's a Rainbow," and "2000 Light Years From Home." That it also contains an extensive sample of Bill Wyman snoring and an eight-minute stoned jam that begins with the timeless phrase "Where's that joint?" is a measure of SATANIC MAJESTIES' breadth of genius and folly. There's a lot going on here--try comparing the wayward Eastern atmospheres of "Gomper" to anything on BEGGAR'S BANQUET, and marvel that you're listening to the same band. The fact that Jagger and Richards could still come up with the unimpeachably charming "She's a Rainbow"--pop psychedelia at its finest--and a fair stab at psychedelic R&B in "The Lantern," while attempting to negotiate the band's rocky passage through Flower Power is a tribute to their vision, their perseverance, and their drugs of choice. Additional guest personnel: Linda Ronstadt; Randy Brecker; Adrian Belew. Recording information: 1986. Through the mist of subsequent pale imitations, it is difficult now to recall the enormous impact of this trans-cultural album. The mould-breaking blend of rock and African rhythms is exemplified by "Homeless," an exquisitely melancholic evocation of African beauty and desolation. The stirring harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo illuminate "Homeless" and "Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes." The element of humour in the latter is echoed in "You Can Call Me Al," a hit single. The lyrics are finely crafted and the result is a structure of impeccable proportions. There are angels in the architecture. SKU: 6565855

Anthem Of The Sun (Expanded And Remastered)
Contains the hidden track "Born Cross Eyed" which follows "Feedback." The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, kazoo, vibraslap); Bob Weir (vocals, electric, 12-string & acoustic guitars, kazoo); Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (vocals, organ, celesta, claves); Phil Lesh (vocals, trumpet, harpsichord, guiro, kazoo, piano, bass, timpani); Tom Constanten (piano, prepared piano, electronic tape effects); Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzman (drums, orchestra bells, gong, chimes, crotales, prepared piano, finger cymbals). Originally released on July 18, 1968, the Grateful Dead's second release ANTHEM OF THE SUN combined a number of 8-track studio recordings with several live 4-track recordings to create a nearly continuous concert presentation on each side of the original LP. The track indexing and running time do not correspond at all to what's listed on the cover (although the song title listing is correct.) All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Outgrowing the white-boy blues jamming of their debut and of their many SF contemporaries, the Dead graduated to an advanced, more lysergically influenced style--not just singing about Alice's adventures in that other world down the hole, but participating in them. Adventurous and grand, ANTHEM OF THE SUN was the first result of the muse that author Ken Kesey's infamous Acid Tests brought out in Grateful Dead music. The abstract chaos and freeform beauty that the Dead provided as the house band at the Acid Tests grew into a modernist polyrhythmic roar. The material now took on extended forms, and ANTHEM OF THE SUN was split between essentially two sections: the post-Hendrix electric clamor of "That's It For The Other One," and Pigpen's " |
