Amnesia
1988's AMNESIA finds Thompson at the beginning of his long, aesthetically successful collaboration with American producer Mitchell Froom. Froom helped to modernize Thompson's sound, taking him further away from his folk-rock background (an idea that must have appealed immensely to the ever forward-looking RT) without losing what made him special. So, though the production values are a touch more high tech on AMNESIA, the Thompson fire still burns bright. The beautiful, longing ballad "Waltzing's ForDreamers" and blazing "Gypsy Love Songs" find Richard the songwriter at the top of his game, while his guitar work is as phenomenal as ever on the tear-'em-up coda of "You Can't Win." AMNESIA pointed the way towards a healthy new direction in Thompson's recording career. SKU: 1036279

Greatest Hits
Clannad includes: Maire Brennan (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Bono, Bruce Hornsby. Clannad started out like many Irish traditional folk bands. Some of their early material for Gael-Linn Records could have been mistaken for The Chieftains or other traditionalists. However, their signing to RCA Records, and their 1982 hit "Theme From Harry's Game," catapulted them to the top of the UK pop charts. Most importantly, Clannad was one of the first Irish bands to delve into ambient music. On GREATEST HITS, we hear some of Clannad's best-loved songs, including the previously mentioned "Theme from Harry's Game." This song, written for a popular BBC television program, is probably Clannad's most moving, haunting composition. The choir-like vocals and the huge reverb transport the listener into verdant harmonic pastures. Other songs, such as "Something to Believe In," are as pop as pop gets, but their arrangement of the traditional tune"The Fairy Queen" harks back to Clannad's original folk roots. SKU: 1032876

v2.0
Dating back to the days of A Tribe Called Quest, manager Chris Lighty and his Violator team have been responsible for the platinum and gold success of many rappers. And when he finally launched his record label under the Violator umbrella, Lighty was already responsible for breaking a generous portion of hip-hop's established artists. On VIOLATOR THE ALBUM: V2.0, the second installment in the Violator compilation series, the label introduces us to its new talent, and refreshes our memory in regard to their veteran performers. Busta Rhymes rips a Neptunes-produced gem with "What It Is," featuring Kelis, and LL Cool J returns for a cameo appearance on "Put Your Hands Up." The album also features such estimable rappers as Ja Rule, Mobb Deep, Fat Joe, andRah Digga, among others. With all this plus the added flavor of Noreaga's "Grimey" and Missy's appearance on "Ex," VIOLATOR makes its mark once again. SKU: 1063235

Return Of The Space Cowboy
Jamiroquai includes: Jay (vocals); Toby Smith (keyboards); Wallis (vibraphone); Stuart Zender (bass); Derrick McKenzie (drums). Following up a debut, EMERGENCY ON PLANET EARTH, that bubbled over with soul, funk andoutrageous acid-jazz rhythms, RETURN OF THE SPACE COWBOY brings the tempo down a notch, without losing any of its funky musical edge (or any of its idealistic lyrical flow). Singer Jason "Jay" Kay's vocals maintain the smooth manner of Stevie Wonder and Al Green, as demonstrated on "Stillness In Time," which evokes the Brazilian grooves of Antonio Carlos Jobim, and on the quiet-storm-like title track. Wallis Buchanan's didgeridoo, a Jamiroquai trademark, returns particularly strongly on "Journey To Arnhemland," which sounds like the theme from an Aboriginal blaxploitation flick. Lest this become a totally low-key affair, a handful of tracks guarantee Jamiroquai isn't faking the funk. "The Kids" opens up the band's sound with greasy wah-wah guitar, punchy horns and a bouncy Moog syunthesizer. Live and studio versions of "Light Years" mix in equal amounts Parliament-Funkadelic and Earth, Wind & Fire, guaranteeing hours of head-bopping and toe-tapping. SKU: 1000926

Fy-Ah Fy-Ah [Digipak]
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer (vocals). Additional personnel: Eric Gale, Ernest Ranglin, Lyn Taitt, Lynn Tait, Alva "Reggie" Lewis, Aston "Familyman" Barrett, Hux Brown, Ranford "Rannie Bop" Williams, Paul Khouri (guitar); Roland Alphonso, Tommy McCook (saxophone); Dizzy Moore (trumpet); Vin Gordon, Daniel Seemo Simpson (trombone); Hugh Masekela (horns); Gladstone Anderson, Glen Adams, Winston Wright (piano, organ); Gladdy Anderson (piano); Jackie Jackson, Paul Gonlanzes (bass instrument); Hugh Malcolm, Bernard Purdie, Mikey Boo Richards, Carlton Barrett (drums); Ras Michael, Larry McDonald, Alvin Secco Patterson (percussion). Producers: The Wailers; Bob Marley & The Wailers; Ted Pouder; Bunny Lee; Arthur Jenkins. Recording information: 1968 - 1970. This excellent three-disc box set collects material the Wailers recorded for JAD records between 1968 and 1970. While not as definitive as theLee Perry-produced sessions they cut in the early '70s (compiled on the superb AFRICAN HERBSMAN), the work on FY-AH, FY-AH is vintage Wailers, with plenty to admire in Marley's early songwriting and in the band's top-shelf performances. The group had yet to perfect the slower, deeper roots sound that would set the blueprint for reggae, but the clear influences of ska and rocksteady, Jamaican gospel, and the smooth, sweet sounds of American R&B make the songs all the more interesting. What strikes the listener most, though, is how great the Wailers were as a unit. The band's inimitable chemistry--their light, lock-step grooves and the contrast between Marley's soulful lead and Peter Tosh's achingly sweet, high tenor--is consistently stunning. The sessions are also notable for the presence of Rita Marley (who sings on "Play Play"), and for the eight tracks on which Tosh sings lead. For these reasons, and its fine packaging (complete with informative liner notes and period photographs), FY-AH, FY-AH will be of interest to all Marley fans and essential for collectors. Mask
Bauhaus: Peter Murphy (vocals); Daniel Ash, Kevin Haskins, David J. Engineers include: Mike Hedges, Kenny Jones, John Etchells. In 1981, Bauhaus had no competition in the field of "Goth" music and could afford to experiment a little. MASK is the group's second album, and it contains some of their best work. There is the groove of "Dancing," a track that contains one of the album's two curious references to ballet dancer Nijinsky (the other is in "Muscle In Plastic"), and the creepy "Hollow Hills," its bass-driven skeleton decorated with distant peals of feedback and sparse drumming. The title cut features Peter Murphy singing over a backwards music trackthat adds considerable menace to the bizarre lyrics. Originally 10 songs long, the CD adds five supplemental tracks gathered from singles. These extra tracks include the comparatively straightforward white reggae of "Harry" and a weird 4-part song wherein each band member takes the lead. Bassist David Jay sets the falsely soothing tale of a trial to the rattle of a drum machine. Murphy's piece is a guide to making fish cakes (?!). Drummer Kevin Haskins provides a series of such suggestions as "Avoid risks, stay at home," and guitarist Daniel Ash contributes a short acoustic guitar piece with backwards vocals. SKU: 1008560

Metalogy (+DVD)
Includes a bonus DVD of a live performance recorded at the Mid South Coliseum, Memphis, Tennessee, on December 12, 1982. Judas Priest: Rob Halford (vocals); Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing (guitar); Ian Hill (bass guitar); Scott Travis (drums). Additional personnel: Dave Holland, Alan Moore, Les Binks, John Hinch, Simon Phillips, Ripper Owens. Compilation Producers: Judas Priest; Jayne Andrews; Bruce Dickinson; John Jackson. Liner Note Author: Bryan Reesman. Recording information: 1974 - 2001. Judas Priest's METALOGY, an impressive four-CD behemoth of a box set that also includes abonus DVD, proved a fitting tribute to a band celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2004. Kudos to the creative team whose use of studded trim and faux leather texture in the packaging is fitting for a group whose visual legacy is inextricably linked to their own S&M/biker apparel. As impressive as the outside of this package is, the music contained within is more important, especially when you consider that this Birmingham outfit laid down many of heavy metal's stylistic touchstones. K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton's twin lead-guitar attack became Priest's hallmark dating back to early, blues-rock based songs "Never Satisfied" and "Deceiver" right up through the huge hits "Living After Midnight" and "You've Got Another Thing Coming." Along with all this, there are furiously energetic live versions of "Hot Rockin'," "Breaking the Law," and "Love Bites." Couple this already undeniable batch of songs with Priest's ability to effortlessly cover disparate artists like Joan Baez, Fleetwood Mac, and Spooky Tooth, and you have a band that's easily earned its legacy. No Rest For The Wicked [Remastered]
Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Zakk Wylde (guitar); John Sinclair (keyboards); Bob Daisley (bass); Randy Castillo (drums). Additional personnel: John Sinclair (keyboards). Producers: Keith Olsen, RoyThomas Baker Reissue producer: Bruce Dickinson. Recorded at Enterprise Studios and Goodnight L.A. Studios, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Epic (44245). Includes liner notes by Phil Alexander. Digitally remastered by Brian Lee and Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios, Inc.). Although Ozzy Osbourne received enormous commercial success with 1986's THE ULTIMATE SIN, his detour into glam metal proved unsatisfying for both Osbourne and his fans. Osbourne spent most of 1987 readying his postponed live album with Randy Rhoads for release, TRIBUTE, and pondering his future musical direction. He elected to return to the kind of music that got him where he was in the first place--loud, unapologetic heavy metal. He also decided to replace guitarist Jake E. Lee with a young newcomer from New Jersey, Zakk Wylde, for 1989's NO REST FOR THE WICKED. Wylde had been a lifelong Ozzy/Sabbath fan, and resembled Randy Rhoads both in appearance and in playing style. While the album is not on par with such past classics as BLIZZARD OF OZ and DIARY OF A MADMAN, NO REST FOR THE WICKED did represent a return to Osbourne's roots (thanks in part to longtime Queen producer Roy Thomas Baker). Osbourne tackles a range of subjects throughout, such as crooked televangelists ("Miracle Man"), serial killer Charles Manson ("Bloodbath in Paradise"), and even his own struggle with alcoholism ("Demon Alcohol"). Also included is the concert favorite and popular video, "Crazy Babies." SKU: 1073837

Psychedelic Sounds Of The 13th Floor Elevators, The
13th Floor Elevators includes: Roky Erickson, Tommy Hall, Stacy Sutherland. Recorded at Summit Sound Studio, Dallas, Texas. Includes original release liner notes by Lelan Rogers. The 13th Floor Elevators might have been remembered simply as one-hit wonder of the '60s--the Texas equivalent of the Count 5, for example--had it not been for two things. First, they were the only rock band in history to feature a guy playing a continuous obligato on electric jug, which added a deeply weird element to even their most straightforward three-chord rockers. Second, and perhaps more importantly, they were fronted by a genuine howling weirdo and cult figure-to-be, the incomparable Roky Erickson. Roky, who took more acid trips than Jerry Garcia had hot meals, was nonetheless a gifted songwriter who sang every word (however bizarre) as if his life depended on it. This debut album--reputedly the first rock album on which the word 'psychedelic' appears-- features the band's sole national hit, the garage punk classic "You're Gonna Miss Me." The other material here is nearly as good, however, including the Stones-y "Reverberation" and theoft-covered "Fire Engine." SKU: 1070568

Personnel includes: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar, piano, harpsichord, glockenspiel); Dave Mason (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Noel Redding (bass, background vocals); Billy Cox (bass); Buddy Miles (drums, background vocals); Mitch Mitchell (drums); Juma Sultan (percussion); The Breakaways, The Sweet Inspirations, Roger Chapman, Andy Fairweather Low, Arthur Allen, Albert Allen (background vocals). Producers include: Jimi Hendrix, Chas Chandler, Eddie Kramer, Mitch Mitchell, John Jansen. Compilation producers: Janie Hendrix, John McDermott. Engineers include: Dave Siddle, Eddie Kramer, George Chkiantz. Recorded in various locations between June 18, 1967 & August 30, 1970. Includes liner notes by Kurt Loder. Overseen by the production company formed by Jimi Hendrix's estate, the 2-CD VOODOO CHILD is the definitive compilation of the late innovator's live and studio output. Whether it's the eerie musical mojo conjured up throughout "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," the transcendental psychedelia fueled by backward-masked guitar on "Are You Experienced," or the delicate beauty of "Angel," the Seattle native's jaw-dropping range still resonates three decades after his death. Among the many treats rounding out the studio segments making up Disc One are a looser and funkier alternate take of "Stone Free" and the original Band Of Gypsies single version of the chugging "Izabella." Disc Two handily captures Hendrix'slive side, ranging from his explosive cover of The Troggs' "Wild Thing" delivered as part of a global debut from the stage of 1967's Monterey International Pop Festival, to a fiery "Freedom" from his final live show at England's Isle Of Wight in 1970. Other featured nuggets include an impromptu, energetic cover of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," and Hendrix's requisite incendiary deconstruction of the "Star Spangled Banner" played in the early morning hours of Woodstock. All this makes VOODOO CHILD essential for fans of musical innovation. SKU: 1073571

Jazz Masters
Personnel includes: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Luis Bonfa, Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of the Verve Jazz Masters series. Antonio Carlos Jobim's entry in the exhaustive VERVE JAZZ MASTERS set of historical reissues is one of the best single-disc Jobim anthologies available. It's not got much in the way of historical range, since it stops in the mid-'60s, just before Jobim left Verve for Reprise and then A&M. However, since Jobim's Verve years were, in the minds of many, his career highpoint, VERVE JAZZ MASTERS 13 distills the best of his most artistically and commercially successful period. Nearly all of Jobim's greatest songs are here in their definitive versions, and thewhole is sequenced thoughtfully, so that the disc has a logical and delightful flow. This is magnificent stuff, as well as being the birth of bossa nova. This disc is also available as part of the three-disc box VERVE JAZZ MASTERS: THE BOSSA NOVA STORY, alongside discs by Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz. SKU: 1005688

New Day, A (Live In Las Vegas/+DVD)
When Celine Dion signed a contract with Caesars Palace to maintain an exclusive Las Vegas residency specifically created for her by the casino, she ended up taking herself out of the international pop spotlight for an extended period of time. A NEW DAY...LIVE IN LAS VEGAS serves as an in-your-face reminder that everyone's favorite French-Canadian diva remains a formidable presence, despite being MIA on the pop charts for awhile. Dion pulls out all the stops with a program that mixes in songs made famous by Nat "King" Cole, Louis Armstrong, Etta James, and Roy Orbison, along with many of her own hits. If there was any question about what "Because You Loved Me," "My Heart Will Go On," and "I'm Alive" would sound like with big Vegas accompaniment, wonder no more. And if this sonic helping ofCeline isn't enough, initial copies of A NEW DAY...LIVE IN LAS VEGAS include ONE YEAR, ONE HEART, a bonus DVD featuring footage of Dion creating her Caesars Palace show and recording this live performance. Electronic
Electronic: Bernard Sumner (vocals, keyboards, programming); Johnny Marr (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, programming). Additional personnel: Denise Johnson, Neil Tennant (vocals); Helen Powell (oboe); Chris Lowe (keyboards); Donald Johnson (drums, percussion); David Palmer (drums); Andrew Robinson (programming). A collaboration between ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and soon-to-be-ex-New Order singer Bernard Sumner, Electronic released one of the last great electro-pop albums before the impact of grunge made the idea of keyboard-based bands with both dance club and Top 40 tendencies seem rather quaintly old-fashioned. The arrangements give equal weight to ticking sequencers, strumming acoustic guitars, and Sumner's boyish vocals, and so the overall feel is not at all unlike the brighter parts of New Order's BROTHERHOOD and TECHNIQUE albums. Pet Shop Boys singer Neil Tennant sings on two tracks, "Patience of a Saint," and the sublime, dreamy single "Getting Away WithIt," one of the best things any of the three main participants have ever been involved with. "Get the Message" ratchets up the tension a few degrees, while elsewhere the band explores the stoned, lazy groove of the then-fashionable Madchester sound. SKU: 1005648

Here My Dear
Personnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Gordon Banks, Wali Ali (guitar); Ernie Fields (alto saxophone); Charles Owens, Fernando Harkness (tenor saxophone); Nolan Smith (trumpet); Frank Blair (bass); Bugsy Wilcox (drums); Gary Jones, Elmira Colins (percussion). Reissue producer:Cary E. Mansfield. Recorded at Marvin Gaye Studio, Hollywood, California. HERE MY DEAR was originally released on Tamla (364) as a 2 LP set. Includes liner notes by David Ritz and Curtis M. Shaw. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep Studios). A concept album of some magnitude, although the subject matter could hardly have been comfortable listening for Anna, Marvin Gaye's ex-wife. She was the subject of Gaye's public 'divorce album', a clever idea if there were no real people involved. The illustration on the sleeve depicts love, marriage, pain and divorce, in addition to the scales of justice (equal). This lengthy album (originally a double vinyl) was poorly received by the critics, although now it has grown in stature, and it really does have considerable depth and melody. Let's face it, if Gaye sang a gardening seed catalogue from cover to cover it would be brilliant. SKU: 1052874

Ab Ovo
When not operating under the Wire, guitarist and sound sculptor Bruce Gilbert (who also traveled on the wheels of steel as DJ Beekeeper) keeps boredom and creative apathy away with many an intriguing side project. Like the Dome affairs with partner-in-crime Graham Lewis, Gilbert often jettisons such passe musical concepts as melody and harmony. Unlike most guitarists, his concern is not so much with what the guitar can continue to do but with what it might be able to do. AB OVO dips rock's bastion into vats of liquid helium and lets the attendant historical baggage dissipate into thin air. Gilbert is capable of keeping things on the peak to normal, but the results often sound like rock's genetically damaged offspring (as in "Emission Curve," where drums, strings, and metals go metal-on-metal in a sturm und drang of stiff-necked beats). "In 3 Minds" is just a wondrous display of Bell Labs-buoyed electronica-Morton Subotnick trapped in a beaker and forced to listen to Aphex Twin. And the buzzing title track, sounding like butterflies caught on skipping CDs batting their wings furiously, shows that Gilbert digs noise from the Pan Sonic school of processing. Super. SKU: 1008610
