Boston [SACD]
Boston: Brad Delp (vocals); Tom Scholz (guitar, organ); Barry Goudreau (guitar); Fran Sheenan (bass); Sib Hassian (drums). Recorded at Foxglove Studios, Watertown, Massachusetts; Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California between 1975 and 1976. Recorded on a simple 12-track recorder as a demo, it was so good that the record company released it. Tom Scholz masterminded the project in his spare time; little did he know that this record came to define AOR, and would become a hi-fi store standard demo disc. Since thattime, this record-breaking debut has sold 15 million copies in its homeland. Sholtz put so much effort into making it, he has managed only three further records in 22 years. "More Than A Feeling" still chills in a corny sort of way and the harmonies are pretty impressive. SKU: 6480775

Stanley Climbfall
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browswer. Lifehouse: Jason Wade (vocals, guitar); Sergio Andrade (bass); Rick Woolstenhulme (drums). Additional personnel: Ron Aniello (guitar, keyboards); Aaron Embry (guitar); Larry Corbott (cello); Matt Chamberlain (drums). Recorded at Royaltone Studios, North Hollywood, California. Perhaps you got the impression from LA-based trio Lifehouse's smash 2000 debut album NO NAME FACE that they were just another bash-it-out post-grunge band with a Stone Temple Pilots jones. STANLEY CLIMBFALL, the band's accomplished follow-up would stand to prove you wrong. One listen to the title track, with its ornate keyboard arrangement, soaring guitar lines, and octave-spanning vocal melodies, would be proof enough all by itself, but it's got plenty of company. Throughout the album, the band deftly adds colors here and there to keep their guitar-bass-drums template from ever getting too monochromatic. That doesn't mean they don't make with the R-O-C-K anymore of course; the guitars churn, the drums bash, and the angst-filled vocals alternately simmer and shout in all the proper places. It's just that with STANLEY CLIMBFALL the lads seem to have begun--dare we sayit--growing up. SKU: 1075782

Feeling Of Jazz, The
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Ray Nance (vocals, trumpet, cornet, violin); Russell Procope (alto saxophone, clarinet); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Jimmy Hamilton (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Paul Gonsalves (tenor saxophone); Harry Carney (baritone saxophone, clarinet); Cat Anderson, Bill Berry, Harold Baker, Roy Burrowes (trumpet); Lawrence Brown, Chuck Connors, Leon Cox, Buster Cooper (trombone); Aaron Bell (bass); Sam Woodyard (drums). Recorded at Bell Studio in New York City on February 13, May 24 & 25, and July 3, 1962. Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance. All tracks have been digitally remastered. By 1962, Ellington was well into his third-stream phase, adding more and more influences from classical, European art, and various indigenous musics to his work, while simultaneously incorporating elements of nearly every jazz, blues, and gospel form which had come before. It's no wonder that by this time, Ellington preferred the term "black classical music" to "jazz." Even Ellington standards like "Take the A Train" and "Black and Tan Fantasy" are rearranged here to reveal previously unexplored facets. The orchestra, which bythis point featured players who had been with Ellington for over two decades, plays as if controlled by one mind. SKU: 6520315

Ear Candy
King's X: Ty Tabor (vocals, guitar); Doug Pinnick (vocals, bass); Jerry Gaskill (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Glen Phillips (vocals); Brian "Squee-kwo" Garcia, Tony Flores, Arnold "Border Problems" Lanni (percussion). Producers: Arnold Lanni, Doug Pinnick, Ty Tabor, Jerry Gaskill. Recorded at Milagro Sound Recorders, Glendale, California; Digital Services, Rivendale Studios and Houston Sound Studios, Houston, Texas. Rumor had it that Atlantic (King's X label at the time) put pressure on the group to produce a "hit" with their sixthalbum overall, 1996's EAR CANDY. While a hit was never hatched, the album was another inspired effort. The band's vocal harmonies and hard rock riffs are outstanding on such cuts as "The Train," "(Thinking and Wondering) What I'm Gonna Do," "A Box," and "Looking for Love." EAR CANDY turned out to be their final studio album for Atlantic, as they moved on to Metal Blade for TAPE HEAD two years later. SKU: 1005357

At Worst... The Best Of Boy George And Culture Club
Producers include: Steve Levine, Arif Mardin, Lew Hahn, Bruce Forest, Bobby Z. Includes liner notes by Boy George. Boy George may get top billing on this 1993 hits compilation, occasioned by his surprising comeback hit with the theme from the gender-bending mystery THE CRYING GAME, but there's no hiding the fact that the best songs are the ten of 19 here recorded with Culture Club. These singles are excellent commercial pop-soul, and several of them--"Do You Really Want to Hurt Me," the utterlysublime "Time (Clock of the Heart)," and "Church of the Poison Mind" in particular--are about as good as chart pop got in the early '80s. Boy George's solo singles are more uneven, but the high points, like a reggae-tinged cover of Bread's "Everything I Own" and the Pet Shop Boys-produced "The Crying Game," are wonderful. Culture Club's first two albums are excellent, but this may be the only Boy George solo record you need. SKU: 1000084

Heart To Yours
Personnel includes: Michelle Williams, Destiny's Child, Shirley Caesar, Mary Mary, Men Of Standard, Carl Thomas. Producers include: Erron Williams, Beyonce Knowles, Mario Winans, HR Crump, Bubba Smith. Engineers include: Peter Thyssen, Cedric Courtois, Rich Balmer. Despite Beyonce Knowles's Diana Ross-like stature inDestiny's Child, newer member Michelle Williams beat Ms. Knowles to the punch when it came time to spin out a solo project following the announcement of the group's self-imposed break. Drawing from her musical roots growing up in the church, Williams's solo bow HEART TO YOURS is a gospel record with the kind of contemporary R&B/crossover trimmings normally associated with the likes of Yolanda Adams (whose name is mentioned by Williams in her lengthy list of thanks.) Blessed with a light and sprightly vocal presence, the Rockford, Illinois native easily shifts gears whether she's going from a lush, piano-driven intro to a funkier, new-jack edge within "Rock With Me" or soaring throughout the bubbly, Janet Jackson-flavored "Sun Will Shine Again." Williams does equally well holding her own against a slew of special guests including Mary Mary (a thumping "So Glad") and Men Of Standard's Isaac Carree and Lowell Pye (the inspirational "You Care For Me"). Other highlights include the roof-raising Shirley Caesar duet "Steal Away To Jesus," the a cappella Destiny's Child reunion "Gospel Medley" and a simmering Carl Thomas team-up on BeBe and CeCe Winan's "Heaven." Wild Gift (Expanded & Remastered)
Available with LOS ANGELES on 1 CD. X: John Doe (vocals, bass); Exene Cervenka (vocals); Billy Zoom (guitar); D.J. Bonebrake (drums). Recorded at Clover Recorders, Hollywood, California in March 1981. Originally released on Slash (107). Includes liner notes by Kristine McKenna. All tracks have been digitally remastered. On X's sophomore effort, 1981's WILD GIFT, the quartet made a conscious effort to solidify their songwriting and sound. While some of the jagged edges have been smoothed out, compared to their rough-and-ready debut, LOS ANGELES, there is still plenty of punk rock energy and attitude to go around. Once again, former Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek is on board as producer, and the results are just as impressive. The obvious standout is "White Girl," a punk pop ditty that foreshadowed such later bands as the Pixies and Nirvana, and would have been a smash hit in a perfect world. Also included are such subsequent X standards as "We're Desperate," "In This House That I Call Home," and the rockabilly rocker "Beyond and Back" (which would later serve as a title track for a double-disc 1997 anthology of the band). The 2001 Rhino Records reissue contains seven bonus tracks, including a demo take of "Blue Spark" (which would be recut for their third album,UNDER THE BIG BLACK SUN) and a single mix of the aforementioned gem, "White Girl." Directions In Music (Celebrating Miles Davis & John Coltrane - Live At Massey Hall)
Full performer name: Herbie Hancock/Michael Brecker/Roy Hargrove. Personnel includes: Herbie Hancock (piano); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Roy Hargrove (trumpet, flugelhorn); John Patitucci (bass); Brian Blade (drums). Recorded at Massy Hall, Toronto, Canada on October 25, 2001. DIRECTIONS IN MUSIC won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. "My Ship" (Herbie Hancock) won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. "Naima" (Michael Brecker) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. The influence that Miles Davis and John Coltrane had on jazz is incalculable; it is breathtaking to think that they were in the same band for a number of years. The focus of this tribute CD is the work they did separately in the 1960's: Miles' second quintet and Coltrane's great quartet. This live set from Toronto's Massey Hallfeatures a cross-generational super-quintet. Passing the torch and keeping the fires burning is what keeps jazz alive and kicking. Young lion Roy Hargrove rises to the occasion and ably keeps up with his elders in this band's frontline. Standouts are Michael Brecker's deconstruction of Coltrane's classic "Naima," the inspired ensemble re-workings of "My Ship" and "So What/Impressions," Herbie Hancock's forever hip, etude-like accompaniments for his bandmates, and the intuitive rhythm support of John Patitucci and the resourceful Brian Blade. Trio Vol.1
Full performer name: Dolly Parton/Linda Ronstadt/Emmylou Harris. I FEEL THE BLUES MOVIN' IN is the second set of previously unreleased Trio recordings that were cut in 1994. Personnel: Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris (vocals); Dean Parks (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin); Carl Jackson, Mark Casstevens, John Starling (acoustic guitar); Ben Keith (steel guitar); David Grisman (mandolin); Alison Krauss (fiddle); David Campbell (strings); Robby Buchanan (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Helen Voices (synthesizer); David Lindley (autoharp); Dennis James (glass harmonica); Roy Huskey, Jr. (acoustic & electric basses); Edgar Meyer (acoustic bass); Leland Sklar (bass); Jim Keltner, Larry Atamanuik (drums). Engineers: George Massenburg, Nathaniel Kunkel. Recorded at The Site, Marin County, California. "After The Gold Rush" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. TRIO II was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. Ever since Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt made their Grammy-winning TRIO album in 1987, fans have been clamoring for a sequel. It took twelve years to follow up with Trio II. Harris, Parton and Ronstadt--pop/country queens with three of the most angelic voices ever to grace the airwaves--have been singing together since 1975. Though each has her own distinctive sound, the three blend beautifully. The material is dizzyingly eclectic, encompassing the old-timey 1934 Carter Family song "Lover's Return," Neil Young's trippy "After the Gold Rush," Randy Newman's lovely "Feels Like Home" and the atmospheric pop of "Blue Train." Harris, Parton and Ronstadt divide up the leads on the tracks, each matching her voice to the material that suits it best. Highlights include the bluesy "I Feel the Blues Movin' In" (Parton),the melodic "High Sierra" (Ronstadt) and, surprisingly, "After the Gold Rush" (Parton), which is given an almost New Age feel. The instrumentation, featuring David Grisman's mandolin and Alison Krauss' fiddle, is tasteful and pristine, highlighting the real stars of the record--those three voices. Is Trio II really a country album? Not exactly. Was it worth the wait? Absolutely. SKU: 5046532

Happiness Is Not A Fish That You Catch
Full Title: Happiness...Is Not A Fish That You Can Catch. Our Lady Peace: Raine Maida (vocals); Mike Turner (guitar); Duncan Coutts (bass); Jeremy Taggart (drums). Additional personnel includes: Jamie Edwards (guitar, keyboards); Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded at Amyard Studios, Toronto, Canada. There's nothing mysterious about Our Lady Peace's sound: raspy, nasal vocals over crunching, post-grunge guitars held together by heavy, relentless, borderline tribal drums. What does make Our Lady Peace stand out is that the group does these things as well or better than its counterparts and that it has the uncanny ability to craft especially unforgettable songs. HAPPINESS...IS NOT A FISH YOU CAN CATCH, the Canadian foursome's third disc, continues Our Lady Peace's tradition of thoroughly satisfying albums. What defines an Our Lady Peace record is the moment when it all comes together, and onHAPPINESS..., that happens on the very first track and single, "One Man Army," a genuine arena rocker with an undeniably hummable chorus. Other standout tracks include the exhilarating "Potato Girl," which highlights the best of Raine Maida's flexible vocals; "Annie," which effectively injects '60s psychedelic pop into the band's sound; and "Lying Awake," an endearingly cloying power ballad. Our Lady Peace doesn't venture all that far from its convention on HAPPINESS..., but it certainly crafts ingeniously catchy tunes that teeter on the edge of perfection. Sometimes, that's all we need from music. SKU: 1043469

Time Is Right, The
Personnel includes: Woody Shaw (trumpet); Steve Turre (trombone);Mulgrew Miller (piano). This 1983 live recording from Bologna, Italy, consists of four long, contemplative, straight-ahead tracks. The overall feel here is less courageous than a lot of Woody Shaw's recording, but the playing is solid and easy on the ears. Two of the tunes, "From Moment to Moment" and the title track, are Shaw compositions. TIME IS RIGHT is basically a vehicle for Shaw; the rhythm section takes a back seat to his fine subtle playing. On the final track, "We'll Be Together Again," his trumpet tone is so warm it sounds more like a flugelhorn. SKU: 4134733
