The third volume of a bluegrass trilogy dating back to 1999's stellar THE GRASS IS BLUE, HORNS AND HALOS finds Dolly Parton pulling together a wide variety of old and new material along with a few unorthodox cover choices.Struck by a sudden burst of creativity in the summer of 2001, Parton was further moved by the tragic events of September 11th. Drawing from her gospel background, this country legend penned some of the most poignant songs in her considerable canon. Spiritual nuances spill over into the most secular of songs. Although the stirring "Hello God" (with its stellar use of choir and strings) and uplifting "Raven Dove" (and its telling of the Second Coming) best represent the religious bent, it also comes across in the saints and sinners theme of the high lonesome title track.
This Tennessee native also digs into her hefty archive of self-penned songs for acoustic reworkings of her 1976 nugget "Shattered Image" and the ballad "What A Heartache," from the RHINESTONE soundtrack. Most surprising are a brisk reading of Bread's soft-rock smash "If" and a slightly reinvented version of the Led Zeppelin warhorse "Stairway To Heaven" that successfully transforms it into a gospel epic.

Backed by a loose-but-funky, horn-driven band, he recontextualizes Muddy Waters ("I Just Want To Make Love To You"), Sonny Boy Williamson ("Help Me") and Sam Cooke ("Bring It On Home To Me") for the post-Beatles generation. At the same time, the versions of classic Morrison songs like "Domino" and "Into The Mystic" are even more fully realized than the studio recordings, with Morrison pouring his soul into every tune. A full-blown concept album featuring sound effects and lengthy narratives would never have happened on Sun founder Sam Philips's watch, but the newly unfettered Cash reveled in the opportunity to make this striking, distinctive record. The album was billed as a "travelogue of America," and Cash neatly combines his passions for American history, storytelling, and the magic of trains to present portraits of the country he loved.
Each track on RIDE THIS TRAIN begins with Cash delivering a monologue over train sounds, taking the roles of characters from different walks and eras of American life, followed by a song further illustrating the tale. This album represented not only a structural/conceptual innovation for Cash, but a stylistic one as well. Most of the tunes are led by acoustic guitar, and the American musical idioms explore include not only country, but folk, country blues, and worksongs. The four bonus tracks included on this reissue don't fall into the format of the rest of the album,but are nevertheless welcome, making good use of the tasteful addition of drums to Cash's tried-and-true Tennessee Two guitars-and-bass approach.

Grinding hardcore punk isn't all that Florida's Poison The Well has to offer. Their third full-length album is also their major-label debut, and while all the usual elements are in full effect here--slashing guitars, blitzkrieg vocals, apocalyptic lyrics--for every by-the-numbers instrumental gambit there's an unexpected twist.
Whether it's the lyrical guitar interlude that occurs midway through "Loved Ones" or the fetching bass intro to "Meeting Again For the First Time," the business of Poison The Well is surprise. A one-disc compilation of the second and third albums by San Jose's Chocolate Watchband--bar none the best-named band of the entire garage-psych scene--this doesn't have anything as immediate as "Let's Talk About Girls" or "Are You Gonna Be There (At the Love-In)." However, the mix of period-specific experiments like the lengthy, raga-like "Voyage Of the Trieste" and "The Inner Mystique," snotty coversof the Kinks' "I'm Not Like Everybody Else," We the People's "In the Past," and Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue," and a handful of stomping, R&B-laced garage-slop originals will be manna for garage-psychedelia aficionados.
This is as good as garage-psych gets. Both of these albums are available, with bonus tracks, from Sundazed. This set will also be of interest to the neophyte or budget-conscious fan.

A true pop diva, Annie Lennox is a lady who doesn't like to be rushed. BARE is her third solo album in 11 years, and the first to contain new material since her first solo outingin 1992. Not to worry, though; she's still the same Annie you know and possibly love. Her songs are slowly, elegantly unfolding amalgams of pop and slow-jam R&B, and her strong, pliable voice fairly drips with emotional pain.
As on her breakthrough record DIVA, Lennox is an expert in the area of the torch song, laying out her heartbreak on a gossamer bed of sound surrounded by feathery pillows of strings and synthesizers. Whether or not you take the strikingly solipsistic liner notes seriously, it's easy to empathize with the anguish Lennox so stylishly expresses throughout BARE. Even when she lays all her cards on the table with "The Saddest Song I've Got," you feel pretty certain that she's still got more tricks up her sleeve that she hasn't even used yet.

Long before Green Day or Blink 182, there was Ireland's Stiff Little Fingers, a fierce 1970s punk band high on energy and pop hooks. Despite many ups and downs, Stiff Little Fingers are still going strong on 2003's GUITAR AND DRUM, successfully mining the punchy, melodic punk they helped pioneer all those decades ago. The group still delivers loud and fast, though some of the edges have been filed down a bit (it's hard to imagine the dreamy jangle-pop of "Dead Man Walking" appearing on a record like 1979's INFLAMMABLE MATERIAL). Also, their accessible songcraft is more pronounced than ever--complete with sing-along choruses and riffs ready for hard-rock air-guitar playing.
There is a vague Celtic vibe to "Achilles' Heart" and a deep reggae influence on "Be True to Yourself." But this is not to say that the Fingers have gone soft. Jake Burns still sings with his ragged-voiced sneer, and the guitars remain razor-sharp. The pummeling tempo of "Empty Sky" and the moving Joe Strummer tribute "Strummerville" show the quartet still know howto tear up their amplifiers old-school style. Clearly, age has not dimmed their vitality or their enthusiasm.

The Smiths' underrated and unjustly maligned swan song found the band experimenting with sound and arrangement more than ever before. From the epic instrumental introduction to "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" to the dark instrumentation of "Death Of A Disco Dancer," STRANGEWAYS HERE WE COME is a sonically rich album, filled with extremes and surprises. Among its many highlights are its signature tune "Girlfriend In A Coma," and the stingingly autobiographical "Paint A Vulgar Picture," which also happens to contain one of the most inspired, melodic guitar passages of Johnny Marr's legendary career.
Produced by future Morrissey collaborator Stephen Street, STRANGEWAYS is a document of a band's "fierce last stand." An inner sleeve photo shows an exasperated studio shot of a lone figure (the cigarette suggests Marr) obviously at wit's end. The album's conceptual looseness, while not necessarily a bad thing ("Death At One's Elbow" notwithstanding), suggests that the band unit was probably not at its most cohesive. The album's finisher, however, "I Won't Share You," is as tender and graceful a thing as the group ever recorded, a fittingfarewell to one of pop music's most engaging teams.
