Beauty And The Beat
This reissue presents the original studio recording without any live audience ambience and applause overdubs. Personnel: Peggy Lee (vocals); George Shearing (piano); Toots Thielmans (guitar); Ray Alexander (vibraphone); Carl Pruitt (bass); Ray Mosca (drums); Armando Peraza (congas, percussion). Recorded on May 28-30, 1959. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. Peggy Lee is heard here singing before a live audience, accompanied by the top-drawer piano of George Shearing. Cole Porter's "Do I Love You?" is transformed by Lee's relaxed voice andthe Shearing quintet's delicate bounce. The music seems to become a multi-sensory experience; "If Dreams Come True" could fool you into thinking you were running through a field of clover on a sunny spring day. Lee has impeccable taste in material; "All Too Soon," an engaging piece of Ellingtonia, is a typical example. Her performance of "I Lost My Sugar in Salt Lake City" is a stirring blues predating her studio recording by three years while Shearing's piano and quintet mirror Lee's gentle emotions on "There'll Be Another Spring"; the sensitive backing is perfect. Tell All Your Friends
Talking Back Sunday: Ed Reyes, Mark O'Connell, Shaun Cooper, John Nolan, Adam Lazzara. Engineers: Erin Farley, Tim Gilles, Arun Venkatesh. Long Island emo crew Taking Back Sunday are an authentic grass-roots phenomenon. They built their following from the ground up, by touring with the likes of the Alkaline Trio and At The Drive-In, and while it took their debut album TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS the better part of a year tomake its way into the Billboard charts, it did so without the benefit of major-label backing. In classic emo fashion, TBS mixes punk energy, pop smarts, and a whole lot of youthful angst. While there are blazing guitars and light-speed drums aplenty to be found here, things never get overbearing. The addition of clever production touches like the female vocal descant on "Bike Scene" and the atmospheric guitar and keyboard intros to some of the more frenetic tunes shows that there's more to Taking Back Sunday than fire and fury. Camembert Electrique [Remastered]
This 1971 release was the first "real" Gong album (1970's MAGICK BROTHER was really Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth with friends, recorded before the band's official debut). It's a psychedelic/space-rock classic, hinting at the conceptual/musical heights reached by the forthcoming "Radio Gnome Trilogy" but characterized by harder-edged riffing and fewer ethereal moments (Steve Hillage and Tim Blake had not yet come aboard). Allen's underground-oriented psycho-sexual, beatnik lyrics are a winning combination of wisdom and whimsy, but it's the music that makes CAMEMBERT. Allen's patented "glissando guitar" style (a spacy, flowing sound achieved with delay effects and a slide) puts the band in early Pink Floyd territory, as do the long, atmospheric jams. There's also a distinct jazz influence in both Pip Pyle's bop-inspired drumming and Didier Malherbe's freaky sax. These elements combined with Gilli Smyth's ambient/erotic "space whisper" backing vocalsand Allen's winning tunesmithery to create some of the least pretentious art-rock ever heard. SKU: 1065863

No Shoes No Shirt No Problems
Personnel includes: Kenny Chesney (vocals); B. James Lowry (electric & gut-string guitar); Mark Casstevens (electric guitar, ukulele); Brent Mason, Clayton Mitchell, Dale Oliver, Pt Buchanan, John Jorgenson, John Willis (electric guitar); Dan Dugmore, Sonny Garrish (steel guitar); Tim Hensley (banjo); Rob Hajacos, Larry Franklin, Glen Duncan, Nicholas Hoffman (fiddle); Steve Nathan, Gary Prim, (piano); Larry Paxton, Michael Rhodes, Steve Marshall (bass); Paul Leim,Sean Paddock (drums); Melonie Cannon, Liana Manis, Wes Hightower, Chip Davis (background vocals). Producers include: Norro Wilson, Buddy Cannon, Kenny Chesney. Recorded at Emerald Sound Studios and Sound Stage Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Kenny Chesney. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words. Take for example the photo from the inner booklet of NO SHOES, NO SHIRT, NO PROBLEMS that features contemporary country star Kenny Chesney resplendent in cowboy hat and tie-dye T-shirt emblazoned with a Beatles lyric. That one image tells you a lot about Chesney's music. Though he's got the requisite amount of twang a la his Nashville contemporaries, he has an undeniable pop-rock sensibility as well. You can hear it in everything from the classic pop "whoo-hooh" background vocals on the opening track "Young" to the crunchy guitars on "Live those Songs," which also happens to make reference to Creedence Clearwater Revival, Buddy Holly, and Otis Redding. For those who hadn't already gotten the crossover message, it's hammered home still further by an album-closing (if you don't count the bonus track) take on Bruce Springsteen's TUNNEL OF LOVE ballad "One Step Up." It's De Lovely (The Authentic Cole Porter Collection)
Full title: It's De Lovely: The Authentic Cole Porter Collection. Personnel include: Cole Porter (vocals); Dinah Shore, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Al Bowlly, Lena Horne, Phil Saxe, Rosemary Clooney (vocals); Jim Hall (guitar); Paul Desmond (alto saxophone). Recording information: 1928 - 2004. Cole Porter holds a place in history as one of America's most legendary songsmiths. Indeed, he eclipses most of his contemporaries, save Irving Berlin and George Gershwin. A composer of matchless wit and charm, Porter penned countless tunes that blossomed into chart-toppers and mainstream jazz standards. IT'S DE LOVELY represents the wide range of interpretations that have been applied to the composer's work over the years. The disc includes the now-famous performance of "Night and Day" by a young Frank Sinatra, a cowboy version of "Don't Fence Me In" by Roy Rogers, and jazz versions of "You Do Something to Me" and "I've Got You Under My Skin" by saxophonists Sonny Rollins and Paul Desmond, respectively. Theopening tracks, which feature Porter himself on vocals, are the high points of this album. These selections are unique for two reasons. First, Porter rarely performed his own music, and second, the big-band arrangements that accompany him were recorded in 2004, seven decades after Porter laid down his vocal tracks. Listeners can hear what it might have sounded like had Porter taken his performing career as seriously as his passion for songwriting. SKU: 6569776

Born To Do It
Personnel includes: Craig David (vocals); Rickaardo Reid (keyboards, programming); Wayne Lawes (programming); Mark Hill, V. Hallett, F. Zargaroli (background vocals). "Fill Me In" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "7 Days" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. The Southampton, England-born singer's US debut is a sultry foray into contemporary R&B, spanning the uptempo album-opening "Fill Me In," the sensuous "Rendezvous," and the pleading "Key to My Heart." Craig David has the sense to combine his pop leanings with his R&B roots, and the result is an irresistible mix of the sensual, the danceable, and the just plain catchy that recalls a millennial version of '80s UK R&B pretender Terence Trent Darby. David's background as a London radio DJ serves him well--the mix of songs is seamless, gliding by as smoothly as a summer boat ride down the River Thames, and his vocal gymnastics are similarly aurally pleasing. Craig David is arguably the latest in a long line of British R&B performers who interpret the form at least as well as, if not betterthan, their US counterparts. SKU: 1039668

Airdrawndagger
Sasha: Greg Knowles (dulcimer, Cymbalom); Charlie May (Bosendorfer, Fender Rhodes, Hammond B-3 organ); Dave Arch (celeste, harpsichord); Steve Lewinson (bass); Luis Jardin (percussion); Andy Page (programming). Recorded at The Computer Hell Cabin, Amsterdam, Holland. For what is ostensibly a dance record (and quite a hot seller at that), Sasha's AIRDRAWNDAGGER is impressively textured, thoughtful, and varied. There's no dangerously high BPM count here; unlike some of his work with partner John Digweed, Sasha's solo outings tend more toward the chillout room than the dancefloor. This is exemplified by such cuts as "Mr. Tiddles," which bears echoes of the Steve Reich/Philip Glass school of minimal repetition, and "Magnetic North," which wouldn't seem out of place on a mid-period Tangerine Dream album. AIRDRAWNDAGGER does get peppier and more percussive, as on the percolating "Cloud Cuckoo," but even there, Sasha shows his musical smarts by cleverly interpolating a subtle sample from an early-'80s track by KingCrimson. That Sasha's got a million surprises up his sleeve. SKU: 1074144

Vault...old Friends 4 Sale, The
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Michael Nelson, Brian Gallagher, Steve Strand, Kathy & Dave Jensen (horns); Mr. Hayes (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Tommy Barbarella (keyboards); Sonny T., Levi Seacer Jr. (bass); Michael B., Sheila E., Kirk Johnson (drums, percussion). Engineers include: Ray Hahnfeldt, Steve Durkee, Shane Keller. Recorded between 1985 and 1994 at Paisley Park, Chanhassen, Minnesota; Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California; Davout Studios, Paris, France; Warner Pioneer Studios, Tokyo, Japan. In order to finish out Prince's contract with the label he abandoned for his own imprint, Warner Bros. released THE VAULT in 1999. Though he'd long since been called the Artist Formerly Known as Prince, our boy apparently wanted so little to do with this project that he had Warner use his old name on the album. The note stating that these songs were written between 1985 and 1994 and "intended 4 private use only" makes the artist's distance from THE VAULT's release that much clearer. In most other performer's cases, such a collection would be full of second-rate, demo-quality cast-offs, barely worth a listen. For an artist as prolific and versatile as Prince, however, it's simply another chance to glimpse the breadth of his mercurial talent. From the churning, Al Green-ish R&B of "5 Women" to the evocative piano-and-percussion-framed "When the Lights Go Down" and the sad, stately ballad "There Is Lonely," Prince is in rare form. Listening to these satisfying, fully formed pieces with the knowledge that they were never meant to be heard only makes one wonder whatelse lies in the Purple One's vault. SKU: 5060687

Finyl Vinyl [Remastered]
This 1999 reissue contains two bonus tracks and has been expanded to two discs. All tracks have been digitally remastered. In 1986, two years after Rainbow broke up, guitarist Richie Blackmore released the appropriately titled FINYL VINYL as the last chapter in thecareer of this impressive band. This double-disc set, a treat for both diehard fans and casual listeners, collects live material that was recorded over a span of six years and with three different singers. "Spotlight Kid" and "Miss Mistreated" are energized on the live stage, while "Street of Dreams" features the addition of background vocalist Lin Robinson. "Since You Been Gone" from Donnington's Monsters of Rock in 1980 features the over-the-top vocals of Graham Bonnet and a snippet of "Over the Rainbow," courtesy of Blackmore. Bonnet also lends his signature vocals to the previously unreleased "Bad Girl." A 1984 Tokyo concert is the source for a powerful and lengthy "Difficult to Cure," which features a Japanese orchestra and some Eastern-flavored guitar work from Blackmore. "Man on the Silver Mountain" and "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" are taken to even greater heights, demonstrating just how well vocalist Ronnie Dio's organic voice shines in live performance. "Weiss Heim" is a beautiful ballad, and a fitting close to the album. SKU: 1018065

Autumn In New York
Personnel includes: Charlie Parker (alto saxophone); Walter Bishop, Jr. (piano); Mundell Lowe (guitar); Teddy Kotick (bass); Max Roach (drums). Recorded live at Rockland Palace Dance Hall, New York, New York on September 26, 1952. Includes liner notes by Alun Morgan. AUTUMN IN NEW YORK was recorded live at the Rockland Palace Dance Hall in New York in 1952. Like many live Parker albums recorded with inferior equipment by devoted members of the audience, the sound quality is poor. Parker is in fine form however, and the set list includes such treats as "Moose The Mooche," the groovy, infectious "Sly Mongoose" and a breakneck treatment of "Lester Leaps In."Parker's alto, on tracks like "This Time The Dream's On Me," jumps through stream-of-consciousness phrases in a way that's truly miraculous. Beneath Between Beyond (The Ultimate Collection Of Static-X Rarities) [PA]
Static-X: Wayne Static (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); Tripp Rex Eisen (guitar); Tony Campos (bass guitar, background vocals); Nick Oshiro (drums). Additional personnel: Koichi Fukuda (guitar, programming); Ken Jay (keyboards, drums); Josh Freese (drums). Producers: Josh Abraham; Ulrich Wild; Wayne Static; Mephisto Odyssey. Recording information: 1996 - 2002. In between recording its third and fourth albums, Static-X kept its rabid fanbase sated with BENEATH, BETWEEN, BEYOND, an 18-track compilation of rare tracks, demos, and previously unreleased material. The expected mix of jackhammer tempos, lead-pipe riffs, and pounding time-keeping saturate this disc, and make demos for Static-X standouts "I Am," "Love Dump," "Get to the Gone," and "New Pain" all the more impressive. Two cuts--"Breathe" and "Deliver Me"--were cut during the sessions for SHADOW ZONE, and include the aforementioned nuances along with the kind of grooves sure to encourage plenty of head-bobbing and pogo dancing. The desire to go back and rework existing tracks is always a risky proposition, but this industrial-rock quartet manages to do it with great aplomb, particularly on the relentless JB's Death Trance Mix of "Push It" and PaulBarker's remix of "I'm with Stupid." Other cuts of note include "Burning Inside," a high-energy collaboration with Fear Factory's Burton C. Bell, and a frenetic reading of the Ramones' "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment" that stays surprisingly true to the original. SKU: 6565003

Past Lives [Digipak]
Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums). Principally recorded live in Manchester and London, England in 1973. Includes liner notes by Bruce Pilato. Hot on the heels of Ozzy Osbourne's rebirth as a pop culture icon comes PAST LIVES, Black Sabbath's first officialOzzy-era live recording. Initially released as an unauthorized 1980 recording called LIVE AT LAST, disc one takes the same material and considerably cleans up its fidelity. The album was recorded at a pair of 1973 UK shows in Manchester and London. Among the thunderous standards trotted out are "Sweet Leaf," "War Pigs," "Snowblind," and of course "Paranoid." Still decades away from the neurological damage caused by long-time drug and alcohol abuse, Ozzy is in fine fettle, incessantly declaring his love for the crowd when he's not exhorting them to clap. Tony Iommi's tasty riffing is equally impressive while his range offers up some surprises, be it the jazz-inflected playing that finds him briefly transforming the Sabs into a swinging trio on "Wicked World" or the medieval-flavored chords sprinkled into the intro of the classic "Children Of The Grave." Disc 2 is a bit spottier as it draws from various locations and dates during the '70s for Sab nuggets like "N.I.B.," "Fairies Wear Boots," and "Iron Man." Die-hards will bask in the greatness of the oft-bootlegged "Megalomania" and a chilling reading of "Black Sabbath." SKU: 1075351
