Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Coleman Hawkins(tenor saxophone); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Harry Carney (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet); Ray Nance (cornet, violin); Lawrence Brown (trombone); Aaron Bell (bass); Sam Woodyard (drums). Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Rudy Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on August 18, 1962. Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance and Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music). All songs written or co-written by Duke Ellington. Surprisingly, this Impulse album is the only recorded meeting between these two swing giants. Born just five years apart, Ellington and Hawkins led parallel lives through the swing era, but somehow never ended up in a recording studio together until this 1962 session. The pairing is certainly a good one that should have been repeated more often. Hawkins' famously robust tenor sax fits in seamlessly with Ellington and a small group of his top sidemen including Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, and Ray Nance. These old pros work smoothly through a relaxed set of new and old Ellington compositions. SKU: 5067983

Degradation Trip
Personnel includes: Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Chris DeGarmo (guitar); Robert Trujillo (bass); Mike Bordin (drums); Walter Earl (percussion). Recorded at A&M, Music Grinder, Hollywood, California; Master Control Studios, Burbank, California. Issued just a few weeks after former Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley was found dead from an apparent drug overdose, Jerry Cantrell's second post-Alice solo effort, DEGRADATION TRIP, will certainly not disappoint fans of Cantrell's former band. As evidenced on his solo debut, 1998's BOGGY DEPOT, Cantrell's vocal style is quite similar to Staley's at times. Cantrell often multi-tracks his backing vocals to resemble the haunting harmonies that he and his former singer would create (such AIC-like topics as drugs and death permeate the album). In other words, DEGRADATION TRIP is quite similar to what a new Alice in Chains album would have sounded like in 2002. Ozzy Osbourne's rhythm section of bassist Robert Trujillo (ex-Suicidal Tendencies) and drummer Mike Bordin (ex-Faith No More) backs up Cantrell throughout, having no problem replicating the economical-but-dense sound of Cantrell's former band. The album opener, "Psychotic Break," sets the tone--murky riffs merged with dejected lyrics--that continues throughout (especially on "Bargain Basement Howard Hughes," "Anger Rising," and "Hellbound"), and Cantrell's more tranquil side breaks throughthe darkness on such tracks as "Angel Eyes" and "Solitude." Greatest Misses
Public Enemy: Chuck D, Flavor Flav (rap vocals); Terminator X (scratches). Additional personnel includes: David Cochrane (guitar), Davy D. Producers include: The Bomb Squad (Hank Shocklee, Carl Ryder, Keith Shocklee, Gary G-Wiz). Engineers: Void, Bob Fudjinski, Mike Bona. Recorded at The Music Palace, Long Island, New York. This contains 6 previously released songs that have been remixed and 6 new songs. The CD includes a live version of "Shut Em Down" (recorded in the U.K.). GREATEST MISSES is more than a re-visitation of Public Enemy's history. Released in 1992, in the wake of the Los Angeles riots, and containing original tracks, remixes, and assorted excerpts of dialogue and music, the album provides another cohesive and powerful soundtrack to America in the 1990s. "Hit the Road Jack" cleverly reworks the Percy Mayfield classic as a hardcore urban anthem. "Gett off My Back" is a bass-heavy anti-cocaine rap that highlights Flavor Flav's personal problems with drugs. Between the tracks is a series of sound bites that includes bizarre statements made by various media personalities regarding the intent of PE'smusic. These misinterpretations are addressed in "Gotta Do What I Gotta Do," where main rapper and lyricist Chuck D explains his motivations. Rounding out the new tracks is "Hazy Shade of Criminal," one of PE's most potent singles. Chuck D's literate rap, accompanied by Flavor Flav's lyrical punctuation, sits atop monster beats. The musically dense track also features Terminator X's signature scratching. Among the remixes, Flavor Flav's "Megablast" gets a heavy, filled-out sound, "Louder than Bomb" is made over with a proto-trip-hop backing track, and "You're Gonna Get Yours" moves Terminator X's scratching forward in the mix. Live At The Beeb
These recordings are taken from live broadcasts on the BBC from 1972 to 1977. Before the advent of MTV in the '80s, there was only one way rock bands hit the big time--through non-stop, hardcore touring. Nazareth was one of the '70s top road warriors, and 1998's double disc set LIVE AT THE BEEB proves it. Recorded during the band's many in-concert appearances on Britain's BBC Radio from 1972 through 1977, LIVE AT THE BEEB captures Nazareth at the height of its popularity and heavy metal powers. In addition to featuring many Nazareth standards, LIVE AT THE BEEB features several songs that never found their way onto albums, such as "Paper Sun" and an album-closing cover ofFrank Zappa's "Road Ladies." Also included are such fan favorites as "Hair of the Dog," "Called Her Name," "Hard Living," and "Expect No Mercy." SKU: 1029010

Horsebreaker Star
Personnel: Grant McLennan (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, vibraphone, tambourine, maracas); Syd Straw, Nicky Ferguson (vocals); John Keane (electric & acoustic guitars, banjo, keyboards, bass, xylophone, percussion, background vocals); Dave Dobbyn (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Andy Carlson (strings, electric guitar, mandolin); Dwight Manning (oboe); Tim White, Bill Holmes, Pedro Bull (organ, piano); Steve Venz, Ian Belton (bass); Joel Morris (drums); Michael Barclay (drums, background vocals); Esta Hill (background vocals). Principally recorded at John Keane Studios, Atlanta, Georgia in spring, 1994. Grant McLennan's third solo effort, HORSEBREAKER STAR, is arguably the finest collection of tracks by any former Go-Between to date. While many lyricists share McLennan's ability to suggest a feeling of nostalgia with just a few words, his strength is in keeping the songs from sinking into self-indulgence or self-pity. Nowhere is this more evident than on songs like "Coming Up for Air," abittersweet reminiscence that could addressed to Robert Forster, the Go-Between's other primary songwriter. Standouts include "Race Day Rag," an instrumental that suggests a somewhat less tense Bob Mould, the gently chugging "Put You Down," which includes one of the great wide-eyed and innocent lyrics of the '90s--"It's just so cool what fingers do"--and the album's title track, which begins with a faintly sinister swirl of distant guitar distortion, eventually growing into the kind of triumphal swell that makes the hair of your arms stand up. Fans should note that the U.K. version of the album is longer by six tracks (and, quite sensibly, omitting the track "Lighting Fires," which the U.S. inexplicably adds despite it being the same version as that on McLennan's debut WATERSHED). Wanted Dread And Alive (Remstered) [Remastered]
Personnel: Peter Tosh (vocals, arranger, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Gwen Guthrie (vocals); Mikey "Mao" Chung; Pee-Wee (flute); Dean Fraser (alto & tenor saxophones); A. Brackenbridge, D. Madden (trumpet); Nambo (trombone); Lou Marini, Jon Faddis, Lew Soloff (horns); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums); Iziah "Stick" Thompson, Noel "Scully" Sims (percussion); The Tamlins (background vocals). Recorded at Dynamic Sound Studios, Kingston, Jamaica in 1981. Includes liner notes by Roger Steffens. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of EMI Records "Peter Tosh Remasters" series. Not many singers can sing "I am wanted by the evil forces" without sounding paranoid, but with Peter Tosh, you believe it. By 1982, Peter Tosh had been brutalized by the Jamaican police more than once. His chief crime was speaking out against the forces of oppression in his native land. As the wanted poster on the cover indicates, WANTED DREAD OR ALIVE finds Peter Tosh in a typically combative mode. The record begins with both guns blazing on the menacing "Coming in Hot." The mood lets up on the uncharacteristically schmaltzy "Nothing But Love," a duet with soul diva Gwen Guthrie, and on the laid-back "Reggae-Mylitis," a sort of dreadlocked cousin of "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu." But in general, this is dark stuff indeed. He inveighs against the wickedness of Babylon on the chilling "Cold Blood" and the crisp, powerful title track. A rock-solid backing group, including the legendary rhythm section of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, supplies sympathetic support to Tosh's gruff, impassioned vocals. On"That's What They Will Do," Tosh sings of friends' betrayal, eerily presaging his death at the hands of a former companion in 1987. SKU: 1073727

Sur La Mer
The Moody Blues: Justin Haywood (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming); John Lodge (vocals, keyboards, bass, programming); Patrick Moraz (keyboards); Graeme Edge (drums). Additional personnel: Tony Visconti (programming). Recorded at Good Earth Studios, Soho, London, England. The Moodies' last album of the '80s is very much of its time--its layered synths and drum programming are at times oppressive--but there's more than enough of the band's trademark lush romantic melodicism to compensate. The big hit here is the opening "I Know You're Out There Somewhere," one of singer/guitarist Justin Hayward's best wistful romanticplaints. Other highlights include "Vintage Wine," a catchy bit of '60s nostalgia with a singalong chorus; "Miracle," in which the band attempts to get funky ala Phil Collins; and "Here Comes the Weekend," which has a sound reminiscent of early '70s glam rock and represents the closest the Moodies have ever gotten to an all-out party anthem. Highways And Honky Tonks
Personnel:Heather Myles (vocals, acoustic guitar); Merle Haggard (vocals); Bob Gothar (acoustic & electric guitars); Pete Anderson (guitar); Marty Rifkin (steel guitar, dobro, mandolin); Gary Brandin (steel guitar); Scott Joss (fiddle); Skip Edwards (piano, organ); Keith Rosier (acoustic bass); Taras Prodaniuk, Ray Kennedy (bass); Larry Mitchell (drums); Brantley Kearns, Irene McCullough, Kelly McGuire (background vocals). Recorded at Mad Dog Studios, Burbank, California and The Bradley Barn, Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Jon Weisberger. HIGHWAYS & HONKY TONKS is like an open window letting in some fresh air and sunshine on the overly formulaic '90s country music scene. Myles pays homage to the traditions of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard (Myles' duet partner on "No One is Gonna Love You Better") and Loretta Lynn, without ever sounding anachronistic or self-conscious. Like Dwight Yoakam, she manages to make the classic country approach seem contemporary without sacrificing it on the altar of overproduction. There's a hint of Buddy Hollyish rock & roll here and there a la Monte Warden (whose fans could do worse than to check out this disc), but this is no pop crossover. As the title implies, Myles is honky tonk at heart, and a fair songwriter to boot. SKU: 1012005

Pearl Harbor
Original score composed by Hans Zimmer. Producers: Trevor Horn, Byron Gallimore, Bob Badami. "There You'll Be" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Awards forBest Female Pop Vocal Performance and for Best Song Written For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media. Faith Hill's TITANIC-style "There You'll Be," a song that will live in infamy, leads off this soundtrack to Hollywood's latest tribute to the men and women who fought and died in America's bloody introduction to World War 2. It's fittingly sweeping and majestic, as is the rest of this soundtrack CD. The simple, heart-tugging musical theme is stated and extemporized upon through the movie's various stages--it does double duty as the soundtrack to what is both a war film and a love story. As with most movie soundtracks, only the orchestration changes. These pieces are an uplifting, and at times moving, memento of an old fashioned Hollywood blockbuster. SKU: 1060731

Pat Metheny Group: Pat Metheny (synthesizer, guitar); Lyle Mays (autoharp, piano, organ, synthesizer); Steve Rodby (synthesizer, acoustic & electric basses); Dan Gottlieb (drums). Additional personnel: Nana Vasconcelos (vocals, berimbau, percussion). Recorded live in Dallas, Texas; Nacogdoches, Texas; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Hartford, Connecticut; Sacramento, California in July, October and November 1982. A double album that flirts with rock, folk, country and Latin - but is emphatically a jazz album. Metheny is equipped with probably his best ever live group; Steve Rodby, Dan Gottlieb, Nana Vasconcelos, and his right arm, keyboard virtuoso Lyle Mays. The recording exudes warmth, and often improves on tracks already issued on studio albums; for example, 'PhaseDance' is played with more verve and 'Song For Bilbao' sounds more passionate in a live context. The diamond in the mine, however, is the shortest piece - the glorious and delicate title track - worth the price of the album alone. SKU: 5070720

Very Best Of Jackson Browne, The
Personnel: Jackson Browne (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, piano); David Lindley (acoustic & electric guitars, slide guitar, fiddle); Kevin McCormick (acoustic guitar, bass); Clarence White (acoustic guitar); Jesse Ed Davis (electric guitar); Sneaky Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar); Craig Doerge (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, Mini-Moog synthesizer); David Paich, Elton John (piano); Benmont Tench (Hammond B-3 organ); Jai Winding (organ, synthesizer); Doug Haywood (organ, background vocals); Michael Utley (organ); Leland Sklar, Chuck Rainey (bass); Russell Kunkel (drums, congas); Jeff Porcaro (drums); Luis Conte (percussion); Vonda Shepard, David Crosby, Graham Nash, Glenn Frey, Dan Fogelberg, Don Henley, J.D. Souther, Bonnie Raitt (background vocals). Producers include: Jackson Browne, Al Schmitt, Jon Landau, Greg Ladanyi, Scott Thurston. Compilation producer: Jackson Browne. Recorded between 1972 & 2002. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh. Before this double-disc dose of Jackson Browne's best came along, the influential troubadour's most extensive career summary was the 15-song THE NEXT VOICE YOU HEAR. This truly definitive anthology contains just about everything on that discand plenty more. Browne helped define the 1970s singer/songwriter idiom, and that process is carefully documented here, as on the precociously world-weary "These Days" and the soulful, Van Morrison-like "Doctor My Eyes." The collection follows Browne through the years, as he toughens up his sound with more of a rock edge ("Running on Empty," "Boulevard") and adds a sociopolitical edge to his lyrics ("Lives in the Balance," "I am a Patriot"). Through it all, Jackson's humanity and humility, not to mention his lyrical song-craft, shine with an enviable consistency. SKU: 6574610

Terror Twilight
Pavement: Stephen Malkmus, Spiral Stairs (vocals, guitar); Mark Ibold (bass); Steven West, Bobby Nastanovich (drums). Additional personnel: Johnny Greenwood (harmonica); Dominic Mercott (drums). Where 1997's BRIGHTEN THE CORNERS saw Stephen Malkmus and his merry band of indie rock pranksters shine a light on the band's rock-centric qualities, TERROR TWILIGHT harkens back to '95s WOWEE ZOWEE, when Pavement were all about the shambolic sprawl of Alternative possibility. Of course, four years later the context is entirely different--the band's fate as rock's (commercially unsuccessful) great post-Nirvana hope is nearly sealed. And maybe that's where both the terror and the twilight come into play--in the realization that preaching sprawling possibility to the converted is more a noose than an open field, that failed expectations are a setting sun. So, a downbeat spirit pervades TWILIGHT's songs. And in this gloom, Malkmuslooks for and finds soft, dark, melodic wonders: "Spit on a Stranger" turns its eye towards relationships, "Major Leagues" towards a careerist's self-worth, and "Ann Don't Cry" tries to be an anthem for outsiders while visibly flashing its own lonely tear. It's not until the closing "Carrot Rope," a sunny bit of mid-tempo Pavement-pop-foolery with two competing and overlapping vocals, that a major-key ray of light is cast upon the proceedings. Let's hope that this little light is enough to get them through the night. SKU: 1016879

One Night Only
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano); Bryan Adams, Anastacia, Mary J. Blige, Ronan Keating, Kiki Dee (vocals); Davey Johnstone, John Jorgenson (guitar, background vocals); Guy Babylon (keyboards); Bob Birch (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson (drums, percussion, background vocals); John Mahon (percussion, background vocals); Ken Stacey, Billy Trudel (background vocals). Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on October 20 & 21, 2000 and Right Track Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by John Tobler. The Presidentof Pop has a history of highly esteemed live albums, from the bare-bones 11-17-70 to the far more elaborate LIVE IN AUSTRALIA with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. So ONE NIGHT ONLY, drawn from a two-night stand at New York's famed Madison Square Garden, has a lot to live up to. Fortunately for Sir Elton's fans, the album does not disappoint. The track list reads like a greatest hits package, including highlights from various phases of Elton's career. It doesn't hurt matters that the singer decided to breathe new life into chestnuts through the addition of some hotshot guest artists. R&B diva Mary J. Blige adds soul to "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues," and old pal Kiki Dee reprises her role as Elton's duet partner on the '70s hit "I've Got the Music in Me." The elder statesman of pop comports himself with both dignity and unbounded enthusiasm throughout this energetic live recording. SKU: 1046670

Presence
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (electric & acoustic guitars, background vocals); John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards, background vocals); John Bonham (drums). Recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich, West Germany. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Led Zeppelin's seventh album, PRESENCE, is a straight-ahead rocker, that has much more of a "live" feel than someof their previous recordings. Gone are most of the big production flourishes, and in their place the big power trio + vocals sound that made Led Zeppelin such a popular concert band. The opening "Achilles Last Stand" is a driving, up-tempo rocker, while the closing "Tea For One" is a slow, Chicago-style blues, featuring Plant's moaning vocals and Page's alternatingly sweet, and frenetic solos. Elsewhere, "Royal Orleans" mixes delta blues with Indian music, "Hots On For Nowhere" is a stop-time boogie, and "Candy Store Rock" is heavy metal rockabilly. SKU: 1084121

Forever For Always For Luther
Tributee: Luther Vandross. Through over a quarter-century of pouring his heart into the most tender of love songs, of stirring the most passionate of fires in women everywhere, Luther Vandross has become synonymous with smooth soul. Therefore, it's not surprising that his songs would translate readily to the smoothest of jazz interpretations. On2004's FOREVER, FOR ALWAYS, FOR LUTHER, a gathering of jazz all-stars pays tribute to the living legend. Fittingly, the emphasis of the disc is on Vandross's ballads, which make up the bulk of his work. Saxophonists bookend the collection neatly, with Kirk Whalum gliding his way around the lightly rousing "Any Love" and Rick Braun closing the set with a take on Vandross's Grammy-winning "Dance with My Father." Another saxophonist, Mindi Abair, performs a nice rendition of one of his peppiest numbers--the 1985 hit "Stop to Love." Vandross's music also translates remarkably well to guitar, as Paul Jackson, Jr. and George Benson each offer polished, pleasant tunes. FOREVER, FOR ALWAYS, FOR LUTHER stands as a fitting homage to a modern R&B legend. SKU: 6567589

Let's Dance [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks andmultimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals); Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nile Rodgers (guitar); Robert Aaron, Stan Harrison (flute, tenor saxophone); Steve Elson (flute, baritone saxophone); Mac Gollehon (trumpet); Rob Sabino (keyboards); Carmine Rojas, Bernard Edwards (bass); Omar Hakim, Tony Thompson (drums); Sammy Figueroa (percussion); Frank Simms, George Simms, David Spinner (background vocals). Recorded at Mountain Studios, Switzerland. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). Though he continued to evolve throughout his career, Bowie's post-SCARY MONSTERS output was markedly less stellar than his acclaimed '70s work. LET'S DANCE, however, is arguably his most memorable '80s recording. It didn't hurt that he reached out to some talented friends, like Stevie Ray Vaughan (who makes his recorded debut here as lead guitarist) and co-writers Iggy Pop ("China Girl") and Peter Godwin (of "Images of Heaven" fame, who helps out on "Criminal World.") Ultimately, though, it's Bowie's unique vision that makes LET'S DANCE a success. His funky, synth-driven avant-pop romps are shot through with a romance and poignancy that sets them apart from much of his later work. "Modern Love," for example, manages to be irresistibly catchy and ostensibly upbeat while depicting alienation and unfulfilled desires. SKU: 1025375
