Next Exit
Personnel includes: Grover Washington, Jr. (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones, background vocals); Nancy Wilson, Lalah Hathaway, Levy Stubbs, Paula Holloway (vocals); Man Slaughter (rap vocals); Richard Lee Steacker, Doc Powell, Rodney Milton (guitar); Kathleen Thomas, Sid Page (strings); Ite Jerez, Lewis Kahn (horns); Teddy Bolden (keyboards, percussion, programming, background vocals); John Bolden, Bill Jolly, James McBride (keyboards, programming); Ramsey Lewis, Sergio George, Donald Robinson, Curt Dowd (keyboards); Gerald Veasley,Keith Roster (bass); Darryl Washington (drums); Miguel Fuentes, Dr. Gibbs (percussion); Jim Salamone (programming); Doug E. Fresh (beat box); Fourever, Annette Hardeman, Ray Sepulveda (background vocals). Producers include: Grover Washington, Jr., Donald Robinson, Sergio George, Teddy Bolden, John Bolden. Engineers include: Al Phillips, Martin Schmelzle, Al Alberts. Grover Washington, Jr. was probably the most successful smooth jazz artist of his generation. His blend of R&B, soul, pop, and jazz earned him a glowing reputation with consumers and "quiet storm" DJs. Washington's discography boasts three decades of creative and heartfelt albums, and his 1992 release, NEXT EXIT is no exception. His velvety sax style blends well with vocal performances by Nancy Wilson on "Your Love," Levi Stubbs on "Till You Return to Me," Paula Holloway and Man Slaughter on "Check Out Grover," and others. Propelled largely by drum machines and electronic keyboards, NEXT EXIT has a distinctly '90s flair. Highlights include Washington's passionate soprano sax solo on the salsa-inflected "Only for You (Siempre Para Ti)" and his offbeat synthesized version of Paul Desmond's "Take Five." SKU: 1004633

Nirvana
Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar); Dave Grohl (vocals, drums); Krist Novoselic (bass). Includes liner notes by David Fricke. All tracks have been digitally remastered. A Nirvana best-of that includes a previously unheard song; how much more of a no-brainer could you want? Admittedly, the trio that defined grunge--not to mention its contemporaneous generation of X'ers--wasn't around long enough to work up that extensive a discography. Still, who wouldn't relish the opportunity to have some of Nirvana's greatest tracks together on one disc (yes, completists, even the rarities collection INCESTICIDE ("Sliver") and the pre-fame album BLEACH ("About A Girl") are represented. And of course, such whisper-to-a-scream classics as "Lithium," "Come As You Are" and the ubiquitous, epochal "Smells Like Teen Spirit" are here. Things quiet down a touch on the UNPLUGGED tracks (David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World, the IN UTERO hit "All Apologies"), but the intensity doesn't lessen a single iota. "Wait," we hear you cry, "what about that chilling live rendition of Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" or NEVERMIND's haunting closer (hidden track aside) "Something In The Way?" You'll just have to wait for Vol.II (Courtney, are you listening?). By the way, the "new" track "You Know You're Right" is great, if not exactly revelatory. SKU: 1076881

Street Legal [SACD]
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and SuperAudio CD players. Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar); Steven Soles (guitar, background vocals); Billy Cross (guitar); David Mansfield (mandolin, violin); Steve Douglas (soprano & tenor saxophones); Steve Madaio (trumpet); Alan Pasqua (keyboards); Jerry Scheff (bass); Jan Wallace (drums); Bobbye Hall (percussion); Carolyn Dennis, Jo Ann Harris, Helena Springs (background vocals). Recorded at Rundown Studios, Santa Monica, California. Dylan's last pre-Christianity batch of tunes, STREET LEGAL achieves a comfortable balance between the staid professionalism of the same year's live recording AT BUDOKAN and the rough-and-ready aesthetic of previous albums like DESIRE. As was often the case in his post-BLOOD ON THE TRACKS records, some of the most effective tunes on STREET LEGAL are those that he seems to have labored over least. A good example is the way the simple 12-bar blues of "New Pony" eclipses the more elaborately constructed opener "Changing of the Guards." Naturally, that's not to say Dylan's vaunted wordplay had hit a valley on STREET LEGAL. Anyone who can rhyme "where we're headin'" with "Armageddon," as he does on "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)," plainly has more than a few lyrical tricks left up his sleeve. Those searching for subtext in the tunes here may note the evidence of a spiritual turmoil that would soon lead to Dylan's theological metamorphosis. SKU: 1086967

Supermodified
This disc is so textured, it practically suggests the sound of sludge. Dense samples are layered one on top of another, creating a thick, intriguing environment. The grooves are relentless, sometimes underpinned with a heavy bass drone. At times, like on the terrific "Rhino Jockey," wonderful tidal waves of sound come pounding out of the speakers. And even though some of record sounds like Ellington and Gershwin going to hell on a holiday with Alec Empire, there are plenty of more laid back and jazz-flavored moments. There's even the eccentric Quadraceptor doing hiskooky human beatbox on "Precursor." But these are just the beginnings of this discs' many pleasures, which will reveal themselves upon repeated listens. SKU: 1032954

Elvis NBC Special (TV soundtrack)
Personnel: Elvis Presley, Charlie Hodge (vocals, guitars); Billy Goldenberg (conductor); Al Casey (guitars, bass); Scotty Moore, Tommy Tedesco, Mike Deasy (guitars); Larry Knechtal, Don Randi (keyboards); Tommy Morgan (harmonicas); Charles Berghoffer (bass); Hal Blaine, D.J. Fontana (drums); John Cyr, Frank DeVito (percussion). The Blossoms: Darlene Love, Jean King, Fanita James (vocals). Recorded live at NBC Studios and Western Recorders, Burbank, California in June 1968. Broadcast December 3, 1968. By 1968, Elvis Presley's career appeared to be in irreversible decline, torpedoed by the innumerable inane films he had made throughout the previous decade. While Elvis had wiled away the '60s playing characters named Lucky and Spike, artists like the Beatles and Bob Dylan had altered the pop musicscene, making Elvis' previous accomplishments appear quaint but outdated to most young record buyers. Searching for a vehicle to revitalize his career, Elvis and the Colonel decided on a 60-minute television special. The show, quickly dubbed The Comeback Special, accomplished its goal in spades, reestablishing Presley's artistic validity and preparing the public for a string of great singles that arrived early the following year. NBC-TV SPECIAL opens and closes huge, kicking off with Elvis sneering "If you're looking for trouble, you've come to the right place" and ending with one of his most impassioned performances, "If I Can Dream." In between, Presley reunites with original band members Scotty Moore and D.J. Fontana on eight numbers, among them a blistering version of "One Night," and blazes through several production numbers and medleys of his hits. NBC-TV SPECIAL documents a defining moment in Presley's career, and is a must for any fan of the King. SKU: 4123388

Official Live: 101 Proof
OFFICIAL LIVE: 101 PROOF contains live versions of Pantera hits as well as two new studio tracks. Pantera: Philip Anselmo (vocals); Dimebag Darrell (guitar); Rex Brown (bass); Vinnie Paul (drums). Engineers: Aaron "Wires" Barnes, Vinnie Paul. "Cemetery Gates" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. After seven long years of almost non-stoptouring, Pantera personally chose these 16 songs as the creme de la creme, the definitive live Pantera experience. All well and good, we can only hope the folks up front had kneepads and mouthpieces, because this is not for the faint of heart. This is incendiary thrash metal; full-speed-ahead sonic mayhem, from the churning grunge of "Becoming" to the jackhammer assault of "Hostile." "New Level," the disc's opener, pretty much defines the experience here; vocals are shouted rather than sung, drums are attacked with fury and vengeance, guitars scream and churn and ring out like the very bells of Hades...well, you get the idea. There are two new songs here as well, which the band recorded during a 12-day break in their hectic tour schedule. SKU: 1002215

Never Let Me Down [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, keyboards, tambourine); Mickey Rourke (rap vocals); Carlos Alomar (guitar, synthesizer, tambourine, background vocals); Peter Frampton, Sid McGinnis (guitar); Erdal Kizilcay (violin, trumpet, keyboards, bass, drums, background vocals); Stan Harrison (alto saxophone); Lenny Pickett (tenor saxophone); Steve Elson (baritone saxophone); Earl Gardner (trumpet, flugelhorn); Laurie Frink (trumpet); Phillipe Saisse (piano, keyboards); Carmine Rojas (bass); Crusher Bennett (percussion); Robin Clark, Loni Groves, Diva Gray, Gordon Grodie (background vocals). Recorded at Mountain Studios, Switzerland. Originally released on EMI America (46677). Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). After having spent the the mid-'80s putting on his acting shoes for Absolute Beginners and Labyrinth, Bowie returned to music by grabbing his usual henchmen Carlos Alomar and Carmine Rojas and joining forces with old schoolmate Peter Frampton. NEVER LET ME DOWN found Bowie writing or co-writing everything with the exception of Iggy Pop's "Bang Bang." Songs such as "Day-InDay-Out" and "Time Will Crawl" were perfect Bowie songs that worked opposite ends of the spectrum; the everyday reality of a struggling woman living on the periphery of society versus the ambiguity of time itself. Although the creamy synths and slick production are occasional reminders that NLMD was cut in the '80s, these flourishes work especially well on "Zeroes" and the title track. The only hint of indulgence comes in the semi-mythical "Glass Spider" and the rap duet vignette with Mickey Rourke (!) that Bowie drops into the middle of "Shining Star (Makin' My Love)." After that chilling encounter, Bowie fled the solo life for the safer confines of Tin Machine in 1989. SKU: 1025383

Blue Train
Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Kenny Drew (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Philly JoeJones (drums). Recorded at Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on September 15, 1957. Originally released on Blue Note (81577). Includes liner notes by Robert Levin and Bob Blumenthal. With 1957's BLUE TRAIN, John Coltrane not only firmly established his own voice on the tenor saxophone, but also proved his abilities as a bandleader and composer. The musicians on BLUE TRAIN, hand-picked by Coltrane himself, play superbly, not only as individuals, but also as a cohesive unit--a rare occurence in an era where "all-star" ensembles would come together for one session, then disband just as quickly. Nineteen-year-old trumpeter Lee Morgan spins bop lines in a warm tone, belying his age with his extraordinary playing, while drummer Philly Joe Jones and bassist Paul Chambers keep BLUE TRAIN running with impressive agility. Two of Coltrane's compositions here, "Moment's Notice" and "Lazy Bird," contain the seeds of harmonic exploration to be found in his later work. At this stage of his career, Trane was still occupied with blowing over increasingly challenging chord changes. His unique tone could be warm and sweet or sharp and insistent, but is always amazingly expressive. Throughout this revered album, Coltrane packs more emotion into one phrase than most arists are capable of in a whole tune. SKU: 6562617

Standards
STANDARDS, with the exception of tracks 1 and 8, was originally released on LP in Japan. This CD is its first U.S. release. Personnel: Grant Green (guitar); Wilbur Ware (bass); Al Harewood (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on August 29, 1961. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Ron McMaster. Grant Green has always been somewhat neglected in the pantheon of jazz guitarists. Lacking the flash of Wes Montgomery and the cerebral intensity of Jim Hall, his strengths tended to be overlooked, but these strengths are well exhibited on STANDARDS. Green brings a geometric simplicity to the melody of "You Stepped Out of a Dream," his solos unfolding with more light than heat. On Gershwin's charming "Love Walked In," his solo tumbles gently through the changes. He pauses to reflect on a note now and then, giving the time elasticity and looseness rather than propulsion. Bassist Wilbur Ware is similarly underrated. It's hard to understand why--his pulse andsense of the architecture of a tune are without parallel. His rock-solid time on the ballad "If I Had You" shows why he was held in such high esteem by other musicians. Green and Ware work together like a pair of safecrackers, each deftly anticipating and complementing the moves of the other, while drummer Al Harewood keeps steady watch. This set of terse, swinging jazz goes a long way towards fixing Grant Green's place in the jazz guitar firmament. SKU: 1004210
