Heroines, The
Personnel: Tony Joe White (vocals, guitar); Emmylou Harris, Jessi Colter, Lucinda Williams, Michelle White, Shelby Lynne (vocals); Jennifer Lynn Young(fiddle, cello); David Ralicke (saxophone, trombone); Michael Bolger (trumpet); Carson Whitsett (Hammond b-3 organ); Steve Forrest (bass guitar); Marc Cohen, Jack Bruno (drums). Recording information: Church St. Studio, Franklin, Tennessee (2004). Though Southern swamp-rocker Tony Joe White is best known for other people's versions of his songs (Elvis Presley and Dusty Springfield were among the many that covered his tunes), his own recordings spotlight an utterly distinctive performing style. Since the late 1960s, he's been committing his deep, swamp-soaked voice and cutting, bluesy guitar to record. Though his latter-day recording career proved to be inconsistent, White never lost the gritty, soulful essence of what made his music great. Accordingly, THE HEROINES is one of the best of his later releases. The titular concept finds him singing a number of duets with female country artists (Shelby Lynne, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and others). But somehow, White neatly avoids the incongruous, slapped-together feel that dominates most duet albums, establishing an agreeably greasy musical through-line in which one can hear a direct connection to his early classics. The production is appropriately stripped-down, and the feel insistent. One never gets the swamp-rock-by-numbers feeling that marred some of his preceding recordings; instead, THE HEROINES proved that White was still capable of showing off his status as a true American original. Idle Moments [Remastered]
The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of IDLE MOMENTS includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal. Personnel: Grant Green (guitar); Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone); Duke Pearson (piano); Bob Cranshaw (bass); Al Harewood (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on November 4 & 11, 1963. Includes liner notes by Duke Pearson and Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey). This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. It was always a part of Blue Note's development and marketing to introduce new artists as sidemen on more well-known leaders' projects before giving them dates of their own. The system worked pretty well, and the irony is that a release like 1963's IDLE MOMENTS looks likes more of an all-star session in retrospect. Sure, we get to hear Grant Green stretching out. But we also get Bobby Hutcherson and Joe Henderson, who were just winning their first Downbeat polls at the time. Green himself had come through this system, appearing with organ combos and on other hard bop sessions, before graduating to his own Blue Note dates. IDLE MOMENTS may be one of his finest dates in the studio, simply on the strength of the elegant melancholy of the title cut and the deep groove the band settles into on "Django." Green's playing has much in common with that of such labelmates as saxophonist Stanley Turrentineand pianist Gene Harris. He manages to bring solid bebop sensibilities to a spare, down-home approach and delivers it all with an oaken tone at once dry, dark, and full of character. SKU: 4125338

My Thoughts [ECD]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Avant (vocals); Steve Huff (various instruments, bass, programming);Charles "Al" Willis (guitar); Ketara Wyatt (background vocals). Engineers include: Rob, Steve "Stone" Huff, Larry Strum. Recorded at Streeterville, Batcave, Battery Studio and Chicago Recording Company, Chicago, Illinois. The first artist signed to Magic Johnson's label deal with MCA Records, MY THOUGHTS is also Avant's debut album. "Separated" is an energetic, passionate song about a love gone wrong which is pretty much the album's theme, rooted in the ups and downs of love, and Avant uses his dynamic voice to clearly rise above these perfectly positioned tracks. Produced by Steve "Stone" Huff, the album is rare in today's R&B scene, in that Huff is the sole producer. This means there's a refreshing consistency to all the tracks. Besides lacing the songs with his silky vocal delivery, Avant also co-writes ten of the cuts here. Some of the highlights of MY THOUGHTS are "Reaction," "Let's Make a Deal," and "Serious." Overall, a very well-rounded and polished sounding debut. SKU: 1053793

American Idol - The Great Holiday Classics
One of the more appealing aspects of the AMERICAN IDOL phenomenon is after the wheat is separated from the chaff, the famed barbs of Simon Cowell fly with less frequency, and the show is actually quite flowing with positivity. In the final weeks of each season, the few contestants who remain work together, and even when the winner is elected, it's not over, since the runner-up singers from each season have also received recording contracts. Given this good-natured spirit, AMERICAN IDOL: THE GREAT HOLIDAY CLASSICS gathers both the first two years' winners, Ruben Studdard and Kelly Clarkson, along with Clay Aiken, Kimberley Locke, Justin Guarini, and many others, to put their spins on holiday standards. Clay (whose debut album hits stores the same day as GREAT HOLIDAY CLASSICS) leads off with a powerful, orchestral take on "The First Noel" benefited by his trademark quiver. Ruben, who ultimately beat Clay by a slight margin, trades soulful vocals withhis perfect IDOL foil, first season sentimental fave Tamyra Gray, on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" before closing the disc with a stirring solo take of Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas." And while first season champ Kelly doesn't appear on the main album, she drops by for two star turns on a bonus disc. SKU: 6542136

Time After Time
Eva Cassidy Band: Eva Cassidy (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Keith Grimes (electric guitar); Lenny Williams (piano); Chris Biondo (bass); Raice McLeod (drums). Additional personnel: Roger Henderson, Andrew Hernandez, Alan Day, Steve Digman (guitar); Dan Cassidy (violin); Joanne Opegnorth, Uri Wassertzug, Mark Evans, Carole Evans, Edgardo Malaga Jr (strings); Michael Finnigan (Hammond B-3 organ); Jimmy Haslip (bass). Producers: Chris Biondo, Lenny Williams, Steve Digman, Bill Straw, Roger Henderson. Engineers: Chris Biondo, Ned Judy. Principally recorded at The Maryland Inn, Annapolis, Maryland. Includes liner notes by Kevin Howlett. As is so oftenthe case, the talents of singer Eva Cassidy did note come to public attention until after her death. Cassidy died at a mere 33 years of age in 1996, and up until then she'd only been known in the local music scene of Washington D.C. Subsequently, a word-of-mouth groundswell earned her posthumous popularity in England, which then wafted back over to the U.S. TIME AFTER TIME is a good introduction to Cassidy's work. More an interpreter than a writer, Cassidy completely inhabits everything from Simon & Garfunkel's folky ballad "Kathy's Song" to Joni Mitchell's hippie anthem "Woodstock" and Bill Withers's brooding R&B classic "Ain't No Sunshine." Throughout the album, her singing is consistently both strong and reserved, betraying emotion without resorting to showy indulgence. An apt comparison might be an updated, American Sandy Denny, with whom Cassidy shares a special kind of quiet soul. SKU: 1034326

From The Depths Of Dreams [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Senses Fail: Buddy Nielsen (vocals); Dave Miller, Garrett Zablocki (guitar, background vocals); Mike Glita (bass, background vocals); Dan Trap (drums). Recorded at Nada Studios, New Windsor, New York. This punk quintet from Bergen County, NJ came to prominence the old-fashioned way, releasing an EP on a small label and selling it to a steadilygrowing grassroots following. They attracted the attention of a larger indie label in due course, gaining FROM THE DEPTHS OF DREAMS nationwide distribution. Unlike many bands flying punk's pirate flag in the early '00s, Senses Fail don't go in for the jokey pop-punk sound favored by so many of their peers (especially on the West Coast). Nor do they trade in the ubiquitous emo sound, or Rancid-style retro. Instead they pursue their own course; while melodic, they don't go for obvious pop hooks. There's a seriousness of purpose that's the dominant tone here, and an artful angularity to the production and arrangements, occasionally bearing a slight touch of prog-metal flavoring. SKU: 1086208

Elvis In Concert
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals); J.D. Sumner and The Stamps, The Sweet Inspirations, Kathy Westmoreland (background vocals). Recorded in 1977. Includes liner notes byPatrick Snyder. Digitally remastered by Dick Baxter (1992, BMG Recording Studios, New York, New York). Recorded just months before Presley's death, ELVIS IN CONCERT was released in conjunction with an hour-long Elvis concert special for CBS television. Neither saw the light of day before Presley's untimely demise, which immediately transformed both the special and album into memorials to the King. In that spirit, the album features numerous fan testimonials and a "special message" from Presley's father, Vernon, thanking fans for their condolence letters. Presley's poor health is sadly evident on this album, as he becomes audibly winded several times and occasionally has difficulty holding pitch. There are moments on ELVIS IN CONCERT when Presley approaches the heights of his earlier years though, singing powerfully on "See See Rider" and "I Got a Woman," among others. ELVIS IN CONCERT graphically documents the tragic demise of the greatest pop star of his era. SKU: 5061866

Sail Away
Personnel: Randy Newman (vocals, piano); Ry Cooder, Russ Titleman (guitar); Abe Most (alto saxophone); Chris Ethridge, Wilton Felder, Jimmy Bond (bass); Jim Keltner, Gene Parsons, Earl Palmer (drums); Milt Holland (percussion). Producers: Lenny Waronker, Russ Titelman. Reissue producers: Steve Woolard, David McLees. Engineers include: Lee Herschberg, Bruce Botnick, Bob Kovach. Recorded at Amigo Studios, Western Studios and Poppi Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by David Wild. All tracks have been digitally remastered. On SAIL AWAY Newman returned to the lush orchestration of his debut album, but here the strings framed a more substantial collection ofsongs. SAIL AWAY opens with the now infamous title track, where Newman voices the pitch of a slave trader to his cargo of slaves over one of his most beautiful melodies. Elsewhere on the album, the targets of "Political Science," "Burn On" and "God's Song" may have been easy pickings for a satirist of Newman's stature, but the winning character sketches of "Simon Smith And His Dancing Bear" and "Dayton, Ohio - 1903" showcased a songwriter close to his peak. Maladjusted
Personnel: Morrissey (vocals); Alain Whyte (guitar, piano, background vocals); Martin Boorer (guitar, clarinet); Jonny Bridgwood (bass); Spencer James Cobrin (drums). Having spent nearly fifteen years at war with all that is dull and insensitive, Morrissey has become a unique figure in pop music-- looming, eccentric, and, to his religiously loyal fans, infallible. On MALADJUSTED, he chooses to focus his venom on the usual brutes and perverts, as well as presenting vignettes of lives you probably wouldn't find in other people's pop songs ("We've never see a keener/window cleaner"). There's a particularly vitriolic take on his unsuccessful litigation with Smiths rhythm section Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce in "Sorrow Will Come In The End," which is simply spoken over a tense, dramatic string section-- and you thought he sounded miffed when he sang! As for the requisite self-loathing, in "Trouble Loves Me," he implores, "Please fulfill me/Otherwise kill me." Production is handled imaginatively but unobtrusively by Steve Lillywhite (U2, The Pogues, Psychedelic Furs) with a tasteful smatteringof effects and samples. Arrangements, ranging from simple, modern rock to lush string orchestrations, always leave plenty of room for the ever-fascinating, clever, intense craftsmanship of pop's most entertaining depressive. Couldn't Stand The Weather [Remastered]
This 1999 reissue contains five bonus tracks not on the original release. Personnel: Stevie Ray Vaughan (vocals, guitar); Jimmie Vaughan (guitar); Stan Harrison (tenor saxophone); Tommy Shannon (bass); Chris "Whipper" Layton, Fran Christina (drums). Producers: Chris Layton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tommy Shannon, Richard Mullen, Jim Capfer. Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Originally released on Epic (39304). Includes liner notes by Bill Milkowski. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). Stevie Ray was already the hottest act in Austin, Texas, way before David Bowie used his guitar on "Let's Dance." Vaughan's 1983 debut album, TEXAS FLOOD, had alerted the world to a new guitar phenomenon who combined the blues powerof Freddie and Albert King with the inspired ferocity of Jimi Hendrix. He made the Hendrix connection plain with his take on "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)," which rapidly became a concert highlight. At the other extreme was "Tin Pan Alley," a slow blues made famous by Jimmy Wilson but now associated with the Texas hotshot. This was the time when Stevie Ray's celebrity and status among his peers was at least the equal of Eric Clapton. The pitfalls were beckoning. SKU: 4125965

Drumline
Original score composed by John Powell. While the film DRUMLINE is based around a group of youngsters who play in a marching band at a Southern college, there's not much drum-corps music on the soundtrack. In keeping with the pop-cultural milieu of the film, most of this disc is occupied by contemporary hip-hop and R&B tracks. On the one hand, there are frothy soul concoctions from young sirens such as Nivea, Alicia Keys, and Syleena Johnson. On the other, there are hard-hitting rap cuts by Petey Pablo, JC Chasez, Too Short, and others. Other than a brief percussive foray at the top of the track listing, the actual marching-band music is saved for twocuts at the end, whose swinging polyrhythms dip heavily into funk and hip-hop, serving to remind that modern-day drum majors are anything but square. Stone To Flesh
Hot off the heels of Rain Tree Crow's dissolution, multi-instrumentalists Jansen and Barbieri return with another intriguing project. STONE TO FLESH largely forsakes ambient lands for more edgy climes, often interspersing their long, exploratory passages with elongated guitar lines and exotic percussive accents. "Mother London" and "Ringing the Bell Backwards" feature Jansen's clipped vocals, seriously reflective of brother (and former bandmate) David Sylvian, interspersed between fragile synth-warbles, illuminated electronics, and engaging rhythmic devices. "Everything Ends in Darkness" gives Barbieri room to stretch out on the keyboards. His agile synthsexplore forbidding landscapes while Jansen erects primitive tribal groove motifs. SKU: 1017706

O
Personnel: Damien Rice (vocals, guitar, clarinet, piano, bass, drums, percussion); Lisa Hannigan (vocals); Nicolas Dodd (conductor); Mark Kelly (electric guitar); Vivienne Long (cello); Jen Meunier (piano); Shane Fitzsimons(bass); Tomo (drums, percussion); Conor Donovan (timpani, percussion). The beginning of the 21st century found the UK offering a host of new Nick Drakes like Ed Harcourt, Badly Drawn Boy, Tom McRae, etc. On the surface, Damien Rice is not too far removed from them with his intense vocal style, confessional songs, and sparse, acoustic guitar-based arrangements. Upon closer inspection of his debut album O, however, he seems to be more aligned with the likes of David Gray; that's not to say that he mixes folk and electronica, but just that he incorporates old-school singer-songwriter influences in the service of something original. There's a hushed, intimate feel to O, and most of the songs are delivered in a delicate, fragile tone that's perfectly accompanied by the bare-bones production. Tasteful strings and other touches are added here and there, but strictly on an as-needed basis. The closer "Eskimo" erupts into a (literally) operatic climax, and there's a bonus cut touching on an anomalous rock feel, but otherwise this is prime late-night music for your next Leonard Cohen costume party. Shut Up [ECD]
Contains the track "Papa Don't Preach" directly following the track "More Than Life Itself." Personnel: Kelly Osbourne (vocals); Chris Goercke, Thomas R. Yezzi (guitar); Marc Russell (bass); Mike "Beans" Benigno (drums); Powerback(background vocals). Partially recorded at The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. Considering that Kelly Osbourne is the daughter of Ozzy (media icon, creator of heavy metal, "prince of darkness," and noted Epicurean with a taste for flying mammals), one might naturally assume that the teen's debut album is populated by the same sort of Satanic chug-chugging that made the old man famous. Barring that, one might guess that Kelly would go for an update more appropriate for a girl her age, say in the vein of Kittie. That's why it's a bit of a shock that what comes blaring out the speakers when SHUT UP hits the player is an immensely refreshing slab of straight up Stiff Records '81-style punk pop. Sounding like a ticked-off Go Go's, or the Jam if Paul Weller had preferred chasing skirts to debating the merits of socialism, Kelly Osborne mixes trashy guitar with some of most endearingly honest angry breakup lyrics since the heyday of Lesley Gore. In a bizarre teen-pop music landscape populated by overly sexualized Barbie dolls like Christina Aguilera and wiser-than-their-years phenoms like Avril Lavigne, perhaps it's only natural that the most genuine mouthpiece for the average suburban 2002 teenager is a filthy rich rock star's kid. In short, Kelly rocks! SKU: 1077382

Catchall
Swag: Ken Coomer, Jerry Dale McFadden, Robert Reynolds, Doug Powell, Tom Peterson (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Scotty Huff (vocals); Bill Lloyd (guitar, background vocals); Kenny Vaughn (guitar); Chris Carmichael (strings); Jim Hoke (harmonica); Brad Jones (bass). Recorded at Alex The Great Recording & Carport, Nashville, Tennessee. CATCH-ALL is a noteworthy debut by rock veterans Swag, featuring an ex-member of Wilco and members of Sixpence None The Richer, the Mavericks, and Cheap Trick, who pay homage to '60sera pop/rock and the British Invasion. The listener is instantly hooked by the catchy whistle-along "Lone," with its cute harmonies, while "I'll Get By" turns the rock quotient up a notch, "Near Perfect Smile" is a perfect slice of jazzy pop, and "Please Don't Tell" is appealing in a Zombies-like way. Tom Petersson co-wrote "When She Awoke" making his presence felt in the Cheap Trick-like harmonies. Mavericks horn player Scotty Huff sings on "Different Girl", a touching, acoustic number about the loss of innocence. "Ride" gives a mention to Cheap Trick and Swag themselves, just as the Tricksters had done with Kiss years before. CATCH-ALL is fresh, creative pop/rock with a warm retro feel. SKU: 1057096

Welcoming Home The Astronauts
Flickerstick: Brandin Lea (vocals, guitar); Cory Kreig (guitar, piano, keyboards, background vocals); Rex James Ewing (guitar, background vocals); Fletcher Lea (bass, background vocals); Dominic Weir (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Toby Pipes (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Jeff Whittington (guitar, background vocals); Dave McNair (guitar); Todd Pipes (keyboards, background vocals); Jennifer Baldwin, Genevieve Tromiczak, Mick Flair, Jenny Epsing-Kirtland (background vocals). Producers: Todd Pipes, Toby Pipes, Rick Beato. Engineers include: Todd Pipes, Howard Worthen, Rick Beato. Recorded at Bass Propulsion Laboratories, Dallas, Texas, TreeStudios and The Zone, Atlanta, Georgia between April 2000 & August 2001. Winner of the VH-1 reality show Bands On The Run, Flickerstick was the beneficiary of a major label contract that resulted in the reissue of their independently released debut WELCOMING HOME THE ASTRONAUTS. Despite emerging from Deep Ellum (Dallas's local music scene), Flickerstick's influences draw more from the droning inspiration of early Radiohead and Catherine Wheel than from fellow Texans like pop mavens Fastball or musical deviants the Butthole Surfers. Packed with ethereal guitar riffs and swirling effects, songs like "Lift (With Love We Will Survive)" and "Beautiful" reveal the band's psychedelic leanings while the snappy "You're So Hollywood" is soaked in a power-pop insouciance that straddles the line between brilliant and bratty. Blessed with a pliable tenor reminiscent of The Knack's Doug Fieger, singer Brandin Lea is equally at home handling the meandering ambiance of "Sorry...Wrong Trajectory" as he is diving head-long into the sweeping "Coke." Although Lea's head-scratching lyrics on ASTRONAUT's only new song "Smile" win him the Scott Weiland award for clarity, Flickerstick's excellent use of dynamics and hooks make it clear how they came away with the big prize from VH-1's answer to Survivor. Bang
This is a collection of The Jesus Lizard's EPs and 7"s, with three previously unreleased tracks. The Jesus Lizard: David Yow (vocals); Duane Denison (guitar); Dave Wm. Sims (bass); Mac McNeilly, James Kimball, Brendan Murphy (drums). After a decade of some of the most abrasive, gritty, noise-rock imaginable (and an unimaginable stay on a major label) Chicago's Jesus Lizard called it a career in July of 1999. While there may be no new music to soothe (and rile) the souls of angry post-punkers, there's tons of material recorded for countless early Touch & Go singles exiled to cutout 7" oblivion. Instead of forcing fans and newcomers to obsessively scour the small stores hidden in back alleys for those long out-of-print singles, Touch & Go has gathered the B-sides and compilation tracks onto one scorching slab, BANG. The fury never relents throughout these tracks from the early-'90s Steve Albini days. The pure anger in the sound laid down by Denison, McNeilly, and Sims backs David Yow's flexible vocals that go from guttural growl on "Chrome" to distorted hardcore on the epic "Gladiator." The meatiest track comes from the unlikely source of German new wavers Trio. The other Trio cover on the album and one of its three previously unreleased tracks, "Anna," features netherworldly guest vocals from Big Black guitarist Santiago Durango and somehowremains true to both the original and Jesus Lizard's sound at the same time.
