Crowded House
When this sparkling debut by the three-piece Crowded House made its appearance in 1987, those starved for hooks minusthe usual sentimentality were finally sated. New Zealander Neil Finn came all the way to Los Angeles from Australia, bringing with him some of the finest melodies and knowing lyrics to come down the pop-music pike in years. With immaculate production and keyboard additions by Mitchell Froom, (who found his fame with this band), CROWDED HOUSE proved to be a stellar debut. Neil Finn first made his mark as a member of his big brother Tim's band, Split Enz. His contribution to that band gave Split Enz its first international hits (the most notable of which was "I Got You"). Finn continued this tradition of writing and performing harmony-rich gems when he formed Crowded House with Split Enz drummer Paul Hester and Melbourne bassist Nick Seymour. Featuring the beautiful yet ambiguous "Don't Dream Its Over" (covered by Paul Young at the Nelson Mandela Tribute Concert), "World Where You Live," and "Something So Strong," CROWDED HOUSE is the ideal introduction to the delights of Neil Finn and his exceptional band. Give Up The Funk (The Best Of Parliament)
Parliament includes: William "Bootsy" Collins (vocals, guitar, bass, percussion); Eddie Hazel, Garry Shider, Glenn Goins (vocals, guitar); Gary "Mudbone" Cooper (vocals, percussion); GeorgeClinton, Calvin Simon, Fuzzy Haskins, Grady Thomas, Raymond Davis (vocals); Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, Rick Gardner (horns); Michael Hampton, DeWayne McKnight (guitar); Bernie Worrell (keyboards, synthesizers); Cordell Mosson, Rodney Curtis (bass); Jerome Brailey, Dennis Chambers (drums, percussion); Debbie Edwards, Taka Kahn (background vocals). Producers: George Clinton, Walter Morrison. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Recorded between 1974 & 1980. Includes liner notes by Tom Vickers. Digitally remastered by Gary N. Mayo. This is part of the PolyGram Chronicles Funk Essentials series. Though true fans will want to seek out the individual albums, it's hard to go wrong with this outstanding collection of songs. Parliament brings unbridled creativity to dance music. Their original melange of rock, blues, soul, and jazz elements, underscored by a celebration of black identity and drug-influenced sci-fi fantasies, enables them to transcend the limitations of the genre. Many of the Funk Mob's finest creations are included on this disc, including "P. Funk," "Up For The Down Stroke," "Chocolate City," "Mothership Connection," and the incomparably great "Flashlight." It should be said that this album is in no way comprehensive, or even justly indicative of this unique ensemble's astonishing range. For that, one should go the original discs or check out Funkadelic, Parliament's stranger and more high-minded twin unit. Nevertheless, GIVE UP THE FUNK is an outstanding sampler and a great place for the uninitiated to get their first taste of what Funk's First Family does best. SKU: 4126017

Swingin' Affair, A
Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Sonny Clarke (piano); Butch Warren (bass); Billy Higgins (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on August 29, 1962. Includes linernotes by Barbara Long. Like his other Blue Note dates of the period, Dexter Gordon's A SWINGIN' AFFAIR captures the saxophonist in his prime. Recorded a mere two days after his popular GO! with the same quartet, the album features Gordon's supple, smooth lines radiating with brilliance over the gentle finesse of Sonny Clark (piano), Butch Warren (bass) and Billy Higgins (drums). His improvisations are full of life, always with a touch of the blues, and constantly swinging. The result is a clear portrait of a jazz master in his element. Gordon's far-off cry of "Soy Califa" kicks off the opener as Higgins' calypso bounce supports the leader's cheerful melody. Billie Holiday's classic "Don't Explain" is given a slow, smoky atmosphere where Gordon's velvety tones hang in the air like a whispering fog. The rhumba/swing combination of the standard "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" is a peppy jaunt and a standout performance. Bassist Warren's "The Backbone" starts with a bluesy bass and tenor melody that gives way to a full-out swinging jam. Finally, the classic ballad "Until The Real Thing Comes Along" provides an easy change of pace before the ending romp of Gordon's own "McSplivens." SKU: 6536633

Regulate G Funk Era [ECD] [Remastered]
Personnel: Warren Griffin, Nate Hale, Ricky Harris, B-Tip, Deon Williams, Dwayne Williams, Lady Levi, The Dove Shack, Jah-Skillz, Lil' Malik, Nate Dogg (vocals); Greg Geitzenauer (guitar, keyboards); Andreas Straub, Morris O'Connor, Che Laird (guitar); Sean "Barney" Thomas (keyboards); Daniel Shulman, Tony Green (bass); Carl "Butch" Small (percussion); G-Child, O.G.L.B. (background vocals). Engineers include: John Morris, Ulysses Noriega, Mike Ainsworth. Recorded at Saturn Sound, Burbank, California; Sound City, Van Nuys, California; Track Record, North Hollywood, California. "This D.J." was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. "Regulate" was nominated for a 1995 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. As rap stylings infiltrate pop music, genres dissolve and even traditional R&B becomes funked out with a gangsta twist. Dr. Dre's brother Warren G represents a new generation of jacked-up R&B. On REGULATE...G FUNK ERA, hard core street rhymes and scratch DJs vie for center stage with sing-songy hip hop (right on the borderline of pop balladry), colored with an airy West Coast mix of keyboards and bass. Portraying their grim view of street life with aloof bravado, Warren G and Nate Dogg announce a new brand of stylin' with "This Is The Shack," a pleading reggae-scented groove, and "Regulate," in which a sweet R&B style of accompaniment confronts the gangstas on the dance floor. While raunchy skits such as "Gangsta Sermon" and "'94 Ho Draft" bring the church and ESPN cheek to cheek with the boys' locker room, taut arrangements such as "Do You See" and "Recognize" depict adolescent rites of passage and day-to-day challengesof the street. Then just when you think you've got his G-Funk thang down, "What's Next" opens with a nursery rhyme, then launches into a bass-heavy new mix style, even as "And Ya Don't Stop" brings traditional blues elements to play inside a Latin-flavored groove. Happy Songs For Happy People
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Additional personnel: Luke Sutherland (guitar, violin); Greg Lawson, (violin); Scott Dickinson (viola); David Gillian, Caroine Barber (cello). Recorded at Cava Studios, Glasgow, Scotland. Of all the bands emerging in the mid-'90s who were labeled "post-rock," Scotland's Mogwai always seemed to be one of the closest to (gasp) an actual rock band. While their third album ROCK ACTION showed them edging ever closer to rockdom, with more conventional song structures and vocals, the follow-up is a hearty about-face. HAPPY SONGS FOR HAPPY PEOPLE is one of the band's more atmospheric efforts. Whereas the band's early sound was often defined by angular, hypnotic guitar riffs a la Slint, HAPPY SONGS is full of dreamy, ambient electronic textures that wouldn't sound out of place on, say, a Spiritualized album. There is the occasional vocal, but voices (like everything else) are used purely as texture here. The tracks occasionally build to powerful crescendos, but for the most part, this is a mesmerizing, meditative effort suggestive of autumnal introspection and long walks through twilight forests. Isthat post-rock enough for you? SKU: 1082913

Becoming X
Producers: Line Of Flight, Jim Abbiss, Flood. Engineers: Jim Abbiss, Line Of Flight, Flood, Luke Gifford, C. Goddard. Sneaker Pimps have clearly mastered the art of having your cake and eating it too. On BECOMING X, the British band combines techno beats and samples with Big Rock Guitar and cutesy-girl vocals a la Letters To Cleo, covering all bases for an eclectic sound that keeps things from getting too staid or predictable. While the overall mood is one of darkness and urban-jungle drama, Sneaker Pimps manage to come up with enough propulsive rhythms and arresting hooks to bring a little light to the proceedings. Tracks like "6 Underground" slow down the pace a bit and add some acoustic instruments into the mix, making for a Portishead/Everything But The Girl vibe. Elsewhere, the band's rock and roll aspiration rears its head. Whether they're trip-hopping, rocking and rolling or raving, though, Sneaker Pimps provide enough substance beneath their stylistic veneers to keep you coming backfor more. SKU: 4122746

Greatest Hits
The Bangles: Susanna Hoffs, Vicki Peterson (vocals, guitar); Michael Steele (vocals, bass); Debbi Peterson (vocals, drums). Producers: Rick Rubin, David Kahne. Engineers include: David Kahne, Tchad Blake, Peggy McLeonard. Recorded at Crystal Sound, Skyline Recorders and Sound Castle, Los Angeles, California; Sunset Sound Factory and Sunset Sound, Hollywood, California. Includes liner notes by Mark Rowland. Somewhat unfortunately, 1990's GREATEST HITS covers only the Bangles' years at Columbia Records, meaning that their great garage-rocking debut single, "Getting Out of Hand," and their fantastic self-titled 1982 EP are MIA. Also, the collection focuses almost exclusively on the Los Angeles power poppers' singles instead of their moodier and more experimental album tracks, giving a rather unbalanced portrait of the band. That said, the singles are excellent, from the classic no-nonsense beat-pop of "Hero TakesA Fall" and "Walking Down Your Street" to languid ballads like the heartbreaking "If She Knew What She Wants" and "Going Down To Liverpool." Their non-LP version of Paul Simon's "Hazy Shade of Winter" is also including sparing you from the embarrassment of owning the soundtrack to the wretched LESS THAN ZERO. The set closes with two previously unreleased tracks including a terrific folk-rock cover of Gary Zekley's "Where Were You When I Needed You." SKU: 1001235

One Quiet Night
Solo performer:Pat Metheny (baritone guitar). Recorded between November 2001 & January 2003. Includes liner notes by Pat Metheny. Over the years, progressive jazz guitarist Pat Metheny has covered a lot of ground, from Brazilian-inflected world jazz to gentle, ambient soundscapes to fiery, avant-garde experimentation. So it should come as no surprise that his eclectic muse has led him on ONE QUIET NIGHT to a new sonic neighborhood. The album is just Metheny alone with a baritone acoustic guitar--no band, no overdubs, no production, just a man and his musical gift with nothing to get in the way. Accordingly, this is probably the most intimate, personal statement Metheny has made to date. Most of the songs are his own, but he branches out a bit as well, taking on the hit song that Jesse Harris penned for Norah Jones ("Don't Know Why") as well as a chestnut from the catalogue of pianist Keith Jarrett ("My Song"). Whatever the framework, he works his unique brand of subtle-but-intense, emotive-but-intellectual magic on these tunes. His touch, his tone, and his taste are what come out most clearly here, proving why he's widely regarded as one of the most skilled guitarists of his generation. SKU: 1082704

Ballads
Personnel: Dexter Gordon (tenor saxophone); Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd (trumpet); Sonny Clark, Barry Harris, Bud Powell, George Cables, Horace Parlan, Kenny Drew (piano); Neils-Henning Orsted Pedersen, Paul Chambers, Rufus Reid, Butch Warren, Bob Cranshaw, George Tucker, Pierre Michelot (bass); Billy Higgins, Philly Joe Jones, Kenny Clarke, Art Taylor, Al Harewood, Eddie Gladden (drums). Producers: Alfred Lion, Francis Wolf, Todd Barkan. Compilation producers: Michael Cuscuna, Society Red Productions. Engineers include: Rudy Van Gelder. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey between May 6, 1961 and May 27, 1965; CBS Studios, Paris, France on May 23, 1963 and June 2, 1964; live at The Keystone Korner, San Francisco, California on September 16, 1978. The reputation of tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon was destined to be overshadowed by JohnColtrane and Sonny Rollins, not to mention the three titans of the previous era--Ben Webster, Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins. This wouldn't matter so much if Gordon wasn't a musician of the first rank himself. Indeed, Coltrane initially derived much of his hard, piercing sound from the older bop player. Part of the problem is that there isn't one key Dexter Gordon album that crystalizes his achievement, not like Rollin's SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS or Coltrane's GIANT STEPS or A LOVE SUPREME. BALLADS partially fills this gap and is an excellent introduction to Gordon's tenor artistry. Compiled from a number of mostly '60s Blue Note sessions, these familar standards, including Billie's "Don't Explain" and Sinatra's "I'm A Fool To Want You," are given long and bracing workouts in the modern tenor style. Underrated Gordon might have been, but he was never outdated. The grand finale is an electrifying 16-minute "Body And Soul," recorded live in 1978, which includes a nearly 4-minute unaccompanied cadenza. SKU: 1002329

Dresses Too Short/Is It Because I'm Black
Originally released as two separate LPs on Twilight Records: DRESSES TOO SHORT (1968)/IS IT BECAUSE I'M BLACK (1970). This CD features Syl Johnson's first two albums, originally released in the late '60s on the Twilight label. DRESSES TOO SHORT is funky from beginning to end. Anyone unfamiliar with Johnson would do well to give a listen to "Ode to Soul Man," two-and-a-half minutes of unbridled, horn-fueled soul music at full gallop. IS IT BECAUSE I'M BLACK slows things down a bit and focuses on social issues (as indicated by the title). Johnson's version of the Joe South song "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" is a highpoint; he makes the song his own. Along with his recordings for Hi Records (check out either BEST OF THE HI YEARS or THE HI MASTERS), thisset affords a wonderful introduction to a great but often overlooked soul singer during one of the early peaks of his career. Schizophonic
Personnel: Geri Halliwell, Jenny O'Grady (vocals); Absolute (various instruments); Milton McDonald, Phil Hudson (guitar); Dhiren Raichura (electric sitar); Simon C. Clarke (alto & baritone saxophones); Tim Sanders (tenor saxophone); Roddy Lorimer (trumpet, flugelhorn); Paul Spong (trumpet); Richard Edwards (trombone, bass trombone); Annie Whitehead (trombone); Karloss Edwards (percussion); Tracy Ackerman, Pepsi, Shirley, Anna Ross, Andy Watkins, Paul Wilson, Shama Shah (background vocals). After leaving the enormously popular Spice Girls in May, 1998, Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) re-emerged and reinvented herself with SCHIZOPHONIC. The album is based on her experiences over the past year and shows a maturing Geri displaying "woman power" over "girl power." "Look At Me" is bombasticpop a la "Livin La Vida Loca," with a bossa nova feel to it that would fit perfectly on an Austin Powers soundtrack. "Lift Me Up" has a Spice-ish quality and features smooth multi-layered harmonies. "Walkaway," a wistful, well-orchestrated ballad, showcases Geri's fine vocal talents and is an obvious reference to her departure from the top female group on the planet. The remainder of the album employs a variety of styles, as evidenced by the Latin-inflected "Mi Chico Latino." SCHIZOPHONIC is tightly produced and features magnificent musicianship. Spice fans as well as pop connoisseurs should buy this album immediately. SKU: 5046873

Ghost Dance
Death Cult includes: Ian Astbury (vocals); Billy Duffy (guitar). Years before the Cult were posturing in large arenas, playing bluesy power chords to metalmaniacs, they were creating some fine and sensitive music as the Death Cult. Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy's earlier output, presented on GHOST DANCE, attests to the artistic promise that characterized the Cult's first few albums, but which disappeared in a mess of machismo during the band's later efforts. The signature Cult themes of misanthropy, disillusionment, and an obsession with tribal and Native American subject matter abound here, as they would throughout the band's body of work, but the arrangements on GHOST DANCE are daringly sparse and sometimes delicate. While there's a wild despair in Astbury's voice, and a frenetic nervousness in Duffy's guitar licks, there's still room for introspection between the notes. GHOST DANCE is influenced more by Gothacts such as Bauhaus than by the '70s heavy metal that tints later Cult recordings. The overwhelming metal excess that surfaces in later Cult albums is absent; instead, GHOST DANCE is a collection of elegant and delicate simplicity. SKU: 4124323

It's Harder Now
Personnel: Wilson Pickett (vocals); John Tiven (guitar, piano, organ); Jolyon Dantzig (guitar); Mason Casey (harmonica, background vocals); Crispin Ciao (saxophone); Larry Etkin (trumpet); Sky Williams (keyboards); Sally Tiven, Muzz Skillings (bass); Simon Kirke, Todd Snare (drums, percussion); Eddie Kramer (tambourine); Billie Ray Martin, Charlie Feldman, Theresa Williams, Lou Benjamin, Julia Schell, M, Mitch Weismann (background vocals). Recorded at Studio 900, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Jon Tiven. IT'S HARDER NOW was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance. Wilson Pickett's only '90s release proved this soul legend still had the goods when it came to maintaining his legacy of soul shouting. Produced by Jon Tiven (who's also worked with the equally legendaryDon Covay), IT'S HARDER NOW falls deep under the shadow of Memphis/Muscle Shoals soul right down to the Staples-flavored "It Ain't Easy" and the horn-driven "Stone Crazy World." Unlike comeback albums by artists of Pickett's stature where the performer merely shows up, the Wickett Pickett put his fingerprints all over this sizzling collection right down to his co-writing almost half the material and punctuating songs with his trademark yowl. Playing up his randy ladies man image (whose admirers include Eddie Murphy), Pickett includes such risque material as the pounding, "Nutbush City Limits"-inspired "All About Sex" and chugging mash note "What's Under That Dress?" The inclusion of a few blues numbers also comes off well, particularly the smoldering title track and the slashing "Better Him Than Me." Other highlights include the infectious "Bad People" and the bittersweet "Soul Survivor," a worthy successor to Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music" where Pickett pays homage to fellow legends including Covay, Solomon Burke, Bobby Womack, Joe Tex, and Aretha Franklin. Guess Who's Coming To Dinner
Black Uhuru: Michael Rose, Puma Jones, Duckie Simpson. Additional personnel: Radcliff "Dougie" Bryan (guitar); Keith Sterling, Winston Wright (organ). Producers: Delroy Witter, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare. This collection of mid-to-late-'70s singles has been issued under a couple of other names (SHOWCASE and BLACK UHURU), but under any title, it's simply essential. This early material is prime '70s reggae. Unlike a lot of Jamaican reggae artists, Black Uhuruwere able to integrate an upfront American R&B element--thanks largely due to the Al Green-style lead vocals of Michael Rose, supported by South Carolina-born backing vocalist Sheila "Puma" Jones--into their music, which makes the group more accessible to rock and pop fans new to reggae. Tracks like "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" and the wide-eyed "Shine Eye Gal" are immediately appealing to the reggae novice, which makes tougher-sounding and more challenging material like the plainspoken "Abortion" and "General Penitentiary" easier to get a handle on. This seven-track set is brief, but it's a perfect introduction to one of reggae's best bands. SKU: 4112465

Too Tough To Die (Expanded And Remastered)
Ramones: Joey Ramone (vocals); Johnny Ramone (guitar); Dee Dee Ramone (bass); Marky Ramone (drums). Producers: Tommy Erdelyi, Ed Stasium, David A. Stewart. Recorded at Media Sound, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Billy Altman. All tracks have been digitally remastered. With TOO TOUGH the Ramones take on the '80s, and the '80s go down with a second round TKO. After a few fallow years and some substandard albums (by the band's standards anyway), they came rushing back into the ring with a fresh sense of purpose. The addition of new drummer Ritchie Ramone and the return of long-lost brother Tommy (who sat in as producer along with original engineer Ed Stasium) doubtlessly added some fuel to the fire, creating this punchy, revved-up, and highly worthy addition to the Ramones' catalogue. TOO TOUGH finds the Ramones expanding their musical palette further than usual, adding crunchy metal riffs to the title song and "I'm Not Afraid of Life," while "Howling at the Moon (Sha-La-La)" adds new wave keyboards courtesy of the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart. The adventurous Dee Dee takes center stage for two hardcore songs, "Endless Vacation" and the manic "Wart Hog," giving Joey a brotherly run for his money. The best example of a Ramones formula song, "Durango 95," was destined to become the band's concert introsong. TOO TOUGH is proof positive that the words "punk" and "longevity" can go together in the same sentence. SKU: 1074832

Star City
Pell Mell: Robert Beerman, Steve Fisk, Greg Freeman, David Spalding. Two decades into their existence, Pell Mell, the instrumental quartet that has members in four different locations on both coasts, created their sixth and finest album, STAR CITY. It's a bracing, cohesive offering that demonstrates that the band had been rethinking the recipe. Producer Tchad Blake (Latin Playboys, Soul Coughing) places instruments in the mix in a way that gives rise to an ever-changing sonic shape. Pell Mell, who are essentially a guitar-bass-organ-drums outfit, build sturdy structures from the foundation up. With that solid rhythm in place the band then takes creative license with the architecture of the upper floors. Never utilizing mere filigree, Pell Mell adheres to a code of rigorous elegance at all times. Steve Fisk's organ gives way to xylophones and adapted sounds whose source may be blurred but remains ever intriguing. Guitarist David Spalding, the band's newest member, wrote the bulk of the material. Each of these 14songs is a discreet yet complete entity. In the grand tradition of instrumental music this is an album of miniature soundtracks. SKU: 1007301

Written In The Stars
Bill CharlapTrio: Bill Charlap (piano); Peter Washington (bass); Kenny Washington (drums). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York in March 2000. Includes liner notes by Joel Moss. Bill Charlap's art is a most refined and classic one. For starters, the things which seem to matter most to him--touch, tone, lyricism, choice of material--hark back to a time when jazz musicians played songs (not compositions) and the music could readily be found on the airwaves. The son of Broadway composer Moose Charlap and singer Sandy Stewart, Mr. Charlap is not a historical artifact so much as a respectfully playful preservationist. Joining forces with the unrelated but musically connected Peter and Kenny Washington on bass and drums respectively, he delivers a stellar set of standards. Charlap's secret is approaching each track from a singer's perspective even claiming that "the lyric dictates my [instrumental] approach." Highlights include a ruminative, moody "The Man That Got Away," a chipper "On A Slow Boat To China" and a languorous, drop-dead gorgeous "One For My Baby." SKU: 1082810

PASSIONS OF A MAN: THE COMPLETE ATLANTIC RECORDINGS 1956-1961 was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes. These are the complete Atlantic recordings of Charles Mingus from 1956-1961. He was with the label again for a second period from '73 until his death in '79; this set focuses solely on his groundbreaking first tenure. The resulting six CDs are a powerful portrait of a man taking in the world around him and turning it into compositions of timeless beauty, focused anger, quiet redemption, sad observations, and boundless hope. Rooted in blues, gospel, Afro-American folk idioms, Dixieland, bop, and even modernist classical landscapes, Mingus was never short of confidence in and commitment to his vision. That he surrounded himself with such a gallery of monumental and innovative players is a testament both to his good taste and their desire to be a part of something this big and this perfect. Among others, his soloists include Bud Powell, Eric Dolphy, Roland Kirk, Jackie McLean, Pepper Adams, John Handy, and Mal Waldron. This is a colossal document, beautifully annotated and packaged, and a cornerstone of any jazz library. SKU: 5069068
