Quiet Days
Cassette available on Temple (050). NOTES: Battlefield Band: Alistair Russell (vocals, guitar, cittern); Alan Reid (vocals, keyboards); John McCusker (cittern, fiddle, accordion, keyboards, whistle, background vocals); Iain MacDonald (flute, Highland bagpipes, whistle, background vocals). Engineers: Moray Munro, Robin Morton, Gene Carroll. Recorded at Temple Records Studio, Scotland; Clayton Studios, St. Louis, Missouri. This 1992 follow-up to NEW SPRING is as compelling as its predecessor; with the exception of up-tempo reels such as the opening "Captain Lachlan MacPhail of Tiree," and Highland pipe dances such as "Rocking the Baby," the musical atmosphere is plaintive and subdued. In part, this reflects the album's subject matter. Original songs by vocalist and keyboardist Alan Reid and fiddler John McCusker address Scotland's social issues and tales of the working class, as in "The River," a dark evocation of the coast's empty shipyards, and "Close It Down" an indictment of Ravenscraig's closed steelworks industry. The record's serious themes are weighted by equally serious musicianship, especially McCusker's fiddle work (as on the lovely "Dalnabreac"), and Iain McDonald's mastery of the hypnotic Highland pipes on such tunes as "Mo Dhachaidh." The Band is also well known for including the odd contemporary composition, and the entry here is a straightforward Scots folk treatment of Richard Thompson's moving "How Will I Ever Be Simple Again." While not their definitive recording, QUIET DAYS offers a hushed, socially conscious take on the brand of Celtic traditionalism for which the Battlefield Band is revered. SKU: 1020757

Me Myself And Irene
The soundtrack to rubber-faced comedian Jim Carrey's black comedy ME, MYSELF & IRENE is as schizophrenic as his character; it doesn't know whether to be a modern rock collection or a Steely Dan tribute album. Eight of the 15 tracks are Fagan/Brecker compositions interpreted by some of pop music's front line. The Foo Fighters open the set with their trademark uplifting aggro-pop while Smashmouth sets a quirky tone with its So-Cal "Walking on the Sun"-ified version of "Do it Again." Third Eye Blind's latest power ballad makes a soundtrack guest appearance with "Deep Inside of You." The Offspring submit a faithful rendition of A.F.I.'s "Totalimmortal," while Ellis Paul offers the radio-ready "The World Ain't Slowin' Down." Wilco has the perfect Fender Rhodes-spiced touch on "Any Major Dude Will Tell You," and Ivy injects technology into "Only a Fool Would Say That."Hootie & The Blowfish sport big harmonies on "Can't Find the Time to Tell You," and the brass powerhouse and hollow-body guitar sound of the Brian Setzer Orchestra puts an interesting spin on "Bodhisattva." Pop rockers Marvelous 3 add a hard rock edge to the classic "Reelin' in the Years," while Ben Folds Five make "Barrytown" their own. SKU: 1043186

SF Sorrow
The Pretty Things: Wally Allen (vocals, guitar, winds, piano, bass); Dick Taylor (vocals, guitar); John Povey (vocals, sitar, organ, percussion); Twink (vocals, drums); Phil May (vocals). Includes liner notes by Phil May and Mark St. John. Digitally remastered by Mark St. John and Andy Pearce (Masterpiece Mastering). One of the great lost classics of the psychedelic rock era, S.F. SORROW was recorded at the same time (and in the same studio with the same engineer) as SGT. PEPPER and PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, andis on par with both. Unfortunately, the commercial fate of the album (and the group) wasn't as rosy as that of its peers, but that doesn't diminish S.F. SORROW'S quality or historical importance. The record marked an important turning point for the Pretty Things, who began as a Stones-ish R&B band, but by this time were ready to take the leap that a sudden personnel change made easier. The band launched itself whole-heartedly into a more sophisticated style, both musically and lyrically. S.F. SORROW was even more of a concept album than SGT. PEPPER; in fact, thematically the songs hold together a lot better here. The theme concerns the life and times of a British everyman, and the songs are very much in the SGT. PEPPER mold, with production touches and vocal harmonies (not to mention song structures) very much in the Beatles vein, but it was a sound the Pretty Things arrived at more or less independently. Adding to the import of this release is the addition of some excellent, previously unreleased tracks. SKU: 1036189

Dinosaur [Remastered]
Dinosaur Jr.: J. Mascis (vocals, guitar, percussion); Lou Barlow (vocals, bass, Casio); Murph (vocals, drums, casio). Dinosaur Jr.: J Mascis (vocals, guitar, drums, cymbals); Lou Barlow (vocals, keyboards, bass instrument); Murph (vocals, keyboards, drums). Liner Note Author: Byron Coley. Recording information: 1985. Dinosaur Jr.'s first album, entitled DINOSAUR, is a generally overlooked artifact of the band's sizeable catalog. In fact, it's so often ignored that many assume the group's groundbreaking second release, YOU'RE LIVING ALL OVER ME, was actually the debut. Nevertheless, DINOSAUR is an ambitious collection of speedy, fuzzed-out, guitar-driven songs that scream with urgency. Most importantly, however, it offers an honest glimpse into the early years of oneof alternative rock's founding fathers. Guitar innovator J Mascis and bass-mangling cohort Lou Barlow take the listener on a brief foray into dark indie-metal on tracks like "Bulbs of Passion" and "Mountain Man," providing stark contrast to the more lo-fi pop specimens "Forget the Swan" and "Quest." Most songs race by at a rate faster than a punk-rock basement jam session. Overall, it's a portrait of a band on the verge of greatness. DINOSAUR is not for the faint of heart, but will justly reward the patient patron. SKU: 6588359

Blue Mask, The [Remastered]
Personnel: Lou Reed, Robert Quine (guitar); Fernando Saunders (bass); Doane Perry (drums). Producers: Lou Reed, Sean Fullan. Reissue producers: Paul Williams. Recorded at RCA Studios, New York, New York in October 1981. Includes liner notes by Michael Hill. After a dispiriting early-'80s slump at Arista Records, Lou Reed renewed himself artistically by changing labels and releasing THE BLUE MASK on RCA in 1982. This was a brave move, since THE BLUE MASK is a resolutely uncommercial album, making no concessions in either its stark, flatly recorded ambience or harrowing themes. However, grace notes abound for the patient listener. Performing with a no-frills setup for the first time since the Velvets, Reed keenly matches words and music with the sparest of means to achieve the maximum end. THE BLUE MASK pits a hard-earned contentment ("My House," "Women) against the dizzying abyss lurking beneath the surface of life ("Underneath The Bottle," "Waves Of Fear" and, most compellingly, the awesome title track itself). Runningthrough all this, Reed and second guitarist Robert Quine intertwine their instruments, sustaining meditative interludes and codas closer to jazz than rock. Bassist Fernando Saunders' vibrant tone and supple lines also adds a new element of flexibility to Reed's music. Saunders' gentle falsetto backing vocals also make a nice contrast to Reed's famously edgy song-speech. SKU: 1009312

Walking Into Clarksdale
Personnel: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (guitar); Charlie Jones (bass); Michael Lee (drums). Additional personnel includes: Tim Whelan (keyboards); Ed Shearmur (programming). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England. "Most High" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Don't call it a come back, they've been here for years. Eighteen years after the death of John Bonham broke up Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, the man who launched a thousand David Coverdales, andguitar wizard Jimmy Page have reunited for WALKING INTO CLARKSDALE, their first studio album together since 1979's IN THROUGH THE OUTDOOR. But unlike most "supergroup" reunions, they never said never. Beginning with "Shining In The Light," Page's familiar acoustic guitar takes us back to Led Zeppelin circa PRESENCE. Page's trademark axe work and loud-soft-loud dynamics are all over this CD. But even though all the old Zeppelin elements are there, the duo aren't just reliving old glories. Bassist Charlie Jones and drummer Michael Lee as well as alternative rock uber-producer Steve Albini help keep these old gents current. And where Plant may not be able to wail like a castrated muezzin anymore, his singular voice still sounds as fresh as ever on the rockin' "Sons Of Freedom," the bluesy "Walking Into Clarksdale" and atmospheric "Heart In Your Hand." Endless Party
In 2000, a number of concert recordings of late punk icon Johnny Thunders hit the market. This tide may have been fueled by interest in Lech Kowalski's BORN TO LOSE, a documentary that traced the guitarist's life from his Long Island childhood, through groundbreaking stints in the NewYork Dolls and the Heartbreakers, a hit-and-miss solo career, and his drug-induced 1991 death in a New Orleans hotel room. ENDLESS PARTY is a live set that captures a typically sloppy but occasionally inspired solo show by Thunders. As usual, the set starts with a thunderous version of the classic surf instrumental "Pipeline," careens through a collection of solo, Dolls, and Heartbreakers classics, and ends with Thunders' signature ode to heroin ("Chinese Rocks") and the rave-up "Pills." A disc for fans only, but Thunders die-hards will eat it up. SKU: 1063193

Duke, The (The Essential Collection 1927-1961)
THE DUKE is a compilation of material recorded for Columbia, OKeh and the American Recording Company labels, from 1927-1940, 1947-1952 and 1956-1962. Personnel includes: Duke Ellington (leader, piano); Baby Cox, Ivie Anderson, Kay Davis, Al Hibbler, Betty Roche, Rosemary Clooney, Mahalia Jackson (vocals); Harry Carney, Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, Barney Bigard, Otto Hardwick, Jimmy Hamilton, Al Sears, Russell Procope, Paul Gonsalves (saxophone); Cootie Williams, Bubber Miley, Louis Metcalf, Jabbo Smith, Rex Stewart, Shorty Baker, Ray Nance, Cat Anderson, Clark Terry (trumpet); Juan Tizol, Tricky Sam Nanton, Lawrence Brown, Tyree Glenn, Quentin Jackson, Britt Woodman, John Sanders (trombone); Jimmy Blanton, Oscar Pettiford, Wellman Braud, Wendell Marshall, Jimmy Woode, Aaron Bell (bass); Sonny Greer, Louie Bellson, Sam Woodyard, Jimmy Johnson (drums). Recorded between 1927 & 1962. Includes liner notes by Robert G. O'Meally. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Duke Ellington was a great bandleader, a fine if underrated pianist (an influence on Thelonious Monk and Cecil Taylor), a prolificsongwriter, and a superlative arranger, writing specifically to his musicians' strengths, and achieving unique instrumental voicings and textures. He constantly rearranged many compositions, so that, for instance, "Mood Indigo," would differ tremendously in its 1935, 1950 and 1970 incarnations. In consequence, Ellington's was one of the few big bands to survive the Big Band era (the early '30s through the late '40s) while retaining a genuine creative spirit. THE DUKE is a superb overview of Duke Ellington's sporadic residence at Columbia Records, capturing his music at many of its peaks. There's the madly upbeat Lindy-Hop swing of "Slap Happy," and the mellow, luxurious "In a Sentimental Mood" of the 1930's. The '50s begets the sweet jazz-pop of his collaboration with Rosemary Clooney, and soundtrack music (ANATOMY OF A MURDER), while in the '60s, Ellington, with his right-hand man Billy Strayhorn, tackled a re-casting of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," and a madly-swinging face-off with Count Basie's big band. Though it's not definitive (few Ellington compilations could be), this fine set more than lives up to its title. SKU: 1029843

Blackout
Includes a bonus DVD disc. Dropkick Murphys: Al Barr, Ken Casey, Ryan Foltz, Matt Kelly, James Lynch, Marc Orrell. Additional personnel: Stephanie Dougherty (vocals); Joe Delaney (bag pipes). Recorded at The Outpost, Stoughton, Massachusetts. When faced with a hyper-stylized pop music landscape, young'uns may find it hard to imagine that there once was a time when John Mellencamp actually did live in a small town and Bruce Springsteen hung out with the blue-collar tough guys who populate his songs. Luckily, anyone with a hankering for authentic working class rock still has the Dropkick Murphys. Sure the sonic palette maybe a little different, but the sentiment is the same; the Murphys favor equal parts New York Dolls and METAL CIRCUS-era Husker Du hardcore fury over heartland twang, but like every great regular guy album from BORN TO RUN to THE LONESOME JUBILEE, BLACKOUT celebrates the triumph of the individual's spirit over "fat cats" and the sad conundrum of everyday existence. In addition, with their liberal use of traditional Irish instrumentation and explicit references to their hometown of Boston, the Dropkick Murphys manage to turn outrage and existential angst into something akin to a wild summer block party. Broadway The Hard Way
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Mike Keneally (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Ike Willis (vocals, guitar); Eric Buxton, Sting (vocals); Paul Carman (alto saxophone); Albert Wing (tenor saxophone); Kurt McGettrick (baritone saxophone); Walt Fowler (trumpet); Bruce Fowler (trombone); Scott Thunes (bass); Chad Wackerman (drums); Ed Mann (percussion). Recorded on his infamous final world tour of 1988, BROADWAY THE HARD WAY is classic late-period Zappa at his satirical best. In fact, this is one of the best Zappa collections of novelty songs in his huge catalog. Of course, underlying all the buffoonery is one of the greatest assemblages of musicians ever to grace the stage. From long-time Zappasidemen like Ike Willis, Chad Wackerman and Ed Mann to virtuoso guitarist Mike Keneally, keyboardist/vocalist Bobby Martin and a stellar horn section, this is a group far superior to (and larger than) any that FZ ever took under his baton. From Zappa's booming announcement opening "Elvis Has Just Left The Building," the tone is set for a knee-slapping romp pointing a mocking finger at female corporate executives ("Planet Of The Baritone Women"), the right-wing moral majority ("When The Lie's So Big") and Reagan's Surgeon General ("Promiscuous"). Other standouts include a hilarious poke at Jesse Jackson ("Rhymin' Man") and televangelists ("Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk"). All kidding aside, some truly inspired performances occur in a reading of Oliver Nelson's "Stolen Moments" and Zappa's classic "Outside Now." Sting even makes an appearance on his own composition "Murder by Numbers." SKU: 5046782

Hang On To A Dream (The Verve Recordings)
Personnel: Tim Hardin (vocals, guitar, piano), Gary Burton, Phil Krauss (vibraphones), Walter Yost, Bob Bushnell, Felix Pappalardi (bass), Buddy Saltzman, Earl Palmer, Sticks Evans (drums). Compilation producer: Jerry Rappaport. Recorded between May, 1964 and August, 1966. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. This is part of the Chronicles Deluxe Anthology series. HANG ON TO A DREAM collects every studio recording Tim Hardin made for the Verve/Forecast label. It includes 30 selections originally released on his four self-titled albums, as well as 17 previously unreleased recordings. Along with Bob Dylan, Eric Andersen, and a host of others, Tim Hardin changed the public's notion of songwriting in the '60s with innovative, idiosyncratic compositionsand recordings that furthered the burgeoning folk-rock movement. Hardin was more closely aligned with the Fred Neil/Tim Buckley school of jazz- and blues-inflected folk rock. He didn't venture as far into improvisation and extended form as Neil and Buckley (most of his songs were extremely concise and even minimalistic), but his jazzy phrasing and lightly swinging rhythms were a revelation in the world of folk music. This definitive collection compiles all the studio recordings Hardin made for Verve in the '60s--the prime period in his recording career--plus a wealth of previously unreleased tracks that offer heretofore unavailable glimpses into the career of this mysterious, mercurial artist. Hardin's smoky voice had a weariness and sadness that was mitigated by a breathy gentility, as on the quiet, samba-inflected "Misty Roses." Though countless artists covered Hardin's tunes, he was his own best interpreter, navigating the knotty pathways of unconventionally structured compositions such as "You Upset the Grace of Living When You Lie" with deceptive ease, and delivering the now-standard "If I Were a Carpenter" with passion and urgency. Maggot Brain
Funkadelic: Eddie Hazel, Garry Shider, Tawl Ross (vocals, guitar); Bernie Worrell (vocals, keyboards); Fuzzy Haskins (vocals, drums); George Clinton, Raymond Davis, Grady Thomas, Calvin Simon (vocals); Billy Nelson (bass); Tiki Fulwood (drums). Jimi Hendrix's untimely death in September of 1970 left a gaping hole in the funk-rock genre. With 1971's MAGGOT BRAIN, Funkadelic showed that they were rightful heirs to Hendrix's throne. This is the album where, all at once, everything seems to come together for a legendary band. Most obviously, the songwriting is sharper and much more focused. As on their previous releases, epic instrumental compositions dominate. But this time they are much more coherent-and not as obviously geared towards minds in an 'altered' state. The sparse title track provides the ultimate vehicle for Funkadelic's late and great guitarist, Eddie Hazel. Here he does his thing, a moving ten-minute workout that goes through many peaks and valleys, leaving the listener feeling drained by its conclusion. Another highlight is "You And Your Folks, Me and My Folks," touching uponthe topic of interracial relationships in one of Funkadelic's most soulful tracks ever. Also included are a fierce rocker ("Super Stupid"), prime funk workouts (such as "Hit It And Quit It"), more mellow fare ("Can You Get To That," "Back In Our Minds"), and the all-encompassing album closer, "Wars Of Armageddon." MAGGOT BRAIN is unquestionably one of rock and funk's all-time classics. SKU: 4123317

Live Around The World [Digipak] [Remastered]
LIVE AROUND THE WORLD was recorded during Miles Davis' final concert tour and includes a track from his last performance. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet, keyboards); Kenny Garrett (alto saxophone, flute); Rick Margitza (tenor saxophone); Robert Irving III, Kei Akagi, John Beasley, Deron Johnson, Adam Holzman, Joey DeFrancesco (keyboards); Benny Rietveld, Richard Patterson, Foley (bass); Ricky Wellman (drums); Marilyn Mazur, Munyungo Jackson (percussion); Erin Davis (electronic percussion). Compilation producers: Adam Holzman, Gordon Meltzer. Engineers: Patrick Murray, Don Kurek. Principally recorded between August 7, 1988 and July 20, 1990. Includes liner notes by Gordon Meltzer, Benny Rietveld, Foley, Adam Holzman and Erin Davis. Miles Davis upset many a fan with his drastic career changes, yet he always remained true to himself. Nowhere is this better documented than in LIVE AROUND THE WORLD. Taken from Miles' final tour, these performances show him still to be doing what he had done all his life: following his muse and pushing the limits of jazz. From his early years mastering bebop and jazz standards, through his cool, modal, post-bop, electric and funk periods, there was always a strong sense ofdirection and a singular voice in the middle of the fray. That essence remained through Davis' final years; he still offered beautiful songs, wisely chosen and intelligently arranged. Miles traditionalists will appreciate the first track here, in which he breathes new life into "In A Silent Way." That quickly leads into "Intruder," a blowing vehicle for the venerable and impressive saxophonist Kenny Garrett. Garrett and bassist Richard Patterson proceed to go crazy on the frenetically funky "Wrinkle." Tunes like "New Blues" and "Tutu" reveal the sophistication of the master himself as a composer, as well as his finesse on trumpet. Another standout player here is the insanely expressive Foley, sounding like Jimi Hendrix, only funkier (and on bass). SKU: 1076238
