Un Autre Decembre
Third album from French contemporary composer with no formal musical training, who cannot read or write musical notation and claims to not even know what notes he is playing. His beautiful, elegant, minimalist pieces for piano, strings, and woodwind are layered and treated with electroacoustic glitches. Inspired by early 20th Century chamber music, musique concrete and new wave cinema, his is a truly modern French music. SKU: 1080593

Harder Than The Best
Burning Spear includes: Winston Rodney (vocals). Burning Spear (real name: Winston Rodney) is one of modern reggae's giants. His music is full of passion, filled with imagery of darkness and oppression, with salvation just around the corner. Musically, the reggae beat is strong, and the overall sound is charged with the sound of dub, the Jamaican sound where the mixing board is used as an instrument to alter the sounds of a tune by bringing sounds in and out of the mix. HARDER THAN THE BEST is a collection of songs Burning Spear recorded for the Island label from 1975 to 1978. This is some of the best roots-style reggae ever made--Rodney's vocal quality is similar to Bob Marley's, but deeper, and just as committed; the tone is righteous without being overbearing, and the music--heavy on the hornsand keyboards--matches Rodney's urgency and brings a sweet sense of romance and wistfulness. Ricochet
Tangerine Dream: Edgar Froese, Chris Franke, PeterBaumann. Recorded live in France and England in Fall 1975. The live RICOCHET (sporting one of Monique Froese's more enigmatic and abstract covers) remains a high water mark amongst Tangerine Dream's vast in-concert recordings. During their notorious mid-'70s live performances, they were for a time considered to be the loudest band ever--it's not hard to imagine the effect on the inner ear canals of this album's bubbling sequencers played at jet-plane volume. This is still classic electronic music. RICOCHET is divided into two parts, which consist of the three band members pitching their towering banks of synths, sequencers, and drum machines (not to mention some galactically charged guitar) high into the winter night. Edgar Froese conducts himself mightily, erecting great black voids of synthesized matter through which swirling sequencer motifs and beat patterns eke out vast, interstellar heavenly bodies. Put this on the hi-fi, and let the Dream bounce you off the walls. SKU: 1004856

Republic
New Order: Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar); Gillian Gilbert (keyboards); Peter Hook (bass); Stephen Morris (drums). Additional personnel: Audrey Riley, David Rhodes, Andy Duncan, Dee Lewis. Engineers: Simon Gogerly, Mike "Spike" Drake, Owen Morris, Richard Chappell. Their cult years behind them, 1993 saw New Order put their best commercial foot forward with this, their major label debut. By this time they were an act geared to mainstream appetites, and the lighter tone and preponderance of upbeat synthesizer hooks on REPUBLIC suggested a group who had identified their strengths and weaknesses in the four-year interval since their last album. The vibrant tunesmithery that has always been the group's trademark was augmented by a typically polished Stephen Hague production. "Regret" duly became their first major US radio hit. Other effective tracks include set-closer "Avalanche," and "World," the record's most feisty interlude. SKU: 1005036

At Last
Personnel includes: Cyndi Lauper (vocals); Tony Bennett (vocals); Kat Dyson, Gray Sargent (guitar, background vocals); Allison Cornell (violin, viola); Elena Barere, Jonathan Dinklage, Narciso Figueroa, Joyce Hammann, Ann Leathers, Katherine Livolsi-Stern, Nancy McAlhaney, Jan Mullen, Paul Woodiel (violin); Carol Emanuel (harp); Mark Stewart (cello); Aaron Heick (flute); Ronnie Cuber (bass clarinet); Steve Gaboury (accordion, melodica, piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Stevie Wonder (harmonica); Mitch Frohman (tenor & baritone saxophone); John Walsh (trumpet); Dan Reagan (trombone); Lee Musiker (piano); Rob Mathes (keyboards); Ben Street, Bill Wittman, Larry Glazner, Paul Langosch (bass); Sammy Merendino, Clayton Cameron, Steve Jordan (drums); Sheila E., Carlito Soto (percussion). Recorded at Live Wire, Clinton Recording Studios and Avatar Studios, New York, New York; Bennett Studios, Englewood, New Jersey. Beneath the kooky persona she has projected in the past, Cyndi Lauper is a nice New York City girl with quite a set of pipes. AT LAST finds her revisiting the musicshe heard growing up in Ozone Park section of Queens and paying tribute to these songs by way of unique arrangements. Going beyond the typical route of solely dipping into the great American standards songbook, Lauper casts her net far and wide, coming up with material associated with Dionne Warwick, the Animals, and Edith Piaf. Among her more imaginative renditions are the ska-fueled run through "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and the Latin-flavored treatment of Maurice Williams' "Stay," featuring help from Sheila E. and a delightfully brassy horn section. Stevie Wonder also helps out, contributing harmonica to a jazzy "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)," a song originally recorded by Aretha Franklin and Tony Bennett, the latter who duets with Lauper on a late-night lounge version of "Makin' Whoopee." Working with the kind of stripped-down arrangements sympathetic to her keen sense of range, AT LAST finds Cyndi Lauper finally coming home. SKU: 6540995

Witch Doctor, The
Full performer name: Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Bobby Timmons (piano); Jymie Merritt (bass). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at theVan Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on March 14, 1961. Originally released on Blue Note (84258). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ron McMaster. This 1961 session is less well known than many of the other Jazz Messengers' Blue Note dates from the same period. THE WICTH DOCTOR is, however, a strong outing by the legendary group in its most prolific period. Featuring the classic lineup of Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Timmons, and Jymie Merritt, Blakey and his Messengers groove hard on cuts like Morgan's title track and the rhythmic "Afrique." Shorter and Morgan make a grand team as always on tasty arrangements like Shorter's "Those Who Sit and Wait," working together on the melody and then blowing tremendously powerful solos. Blakey is in his prime, spurring on his younger charges with burning grooves and rhythmic waves that would crush weaker men. His intricate patterns on the aptly titled "A Little Busy" provide only a small clue of his overall drumming brilliance. Other worthwhile cuts include Shorter's pulsating "Joelle" and the blistering screamer "Lost and Found." SKU: 1075624

Drops Of Jupiter [SACD]
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Train: Pat Monahan (vocals, saxophone, trumpet, percussion); Jimmy Stafford (guitar, mandolin, background vocals); Rob Hotchkiss (guitar, harmonica, bass, background vocals); Charlie Colin (guitar, bass, background vocals); Scott Underwood (keyboards, drums, percussion, programming). Additional personnel includes: Paul Buckmaster (conductor, arranger). Recorded at Southern Tracks Recording, Atlanta, Georgia; Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; and Ocean Way,Nashville, Tennessee. "Drops Of Jupiter" won the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song and for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). The band that brought "Meet Virginia" to the ears of the nation's youth via heavy-rotation MTV airplay in 1999 delivers its sophomore effort with the aid of producer Brendan O' Brien (who has twiddled knobs for the likes of the Stone Temple Pilots and Pearl Jam). Paul Buckmaster, whose stellar credits include cello on David Bowie's "Space Oddity," also provides some arrangement assistance. But the band sounds best when it appears to be left to its own devices, on tracks such as "It's About You," and "Hopeless," a downtempo cruise through contemporary alienation and angst that builds to a meaty crescendo. For fans of breezy summer music there's "She's On Fire," and the band rocks out more than somewhat on "Respect." But mostly what Train does best is the wounded, introverted slow-burner, as evidenced by "Mississippi," which is a classic of its bruised, troubled kind. SKU: 1070873

Across The Wire (Live From New York)
Counting Crows: Adam Duritz (vocals, piano); Dan Vickrey (acoustic & electric guitar, banjo, background vocals); David Bryson (guitar, dobro, background vocals); Charles Gillingham (harmonica, accordion, piano, background vocals); Matt Malley (acoustic and electric bass, background vocals); Ben Mize (drums, background vocals). Disc 1 was recorded at Chelsea Studios, New York, New York on August 12, 1997. Disc 2 was recorded at the Hammerstein Ballroom, New York, New York on November 6, 1997. Includes liner notes by Bill Flanagan and Adam Duritz. In putting out ACROSS A WIRE as a live double-album, Counting Crows appear to be living on the edge of audacity having only released two records. These San Francisco natives blow away any of these notions with the unique complexity and nuance found within their music and live presentation. WIRE shows off two sides of the same coin by including performances from VH1 Storytellers and MTV Live From The 10 Spot. The audio version of Storytellers omits any narration regarding song origin and focuses entirely on reworked versions of the band's material. Songs such as "Round Here" and "Have You Seen Me Lately?" are radically stripped down so that by the time the full band is playing on "Ghost Train," the shimmering guitar and melancholy organ interplay make for a mesmerizing experience. On disc two, the Crows forgo restraint and tear into numbers such as "Angels Of TheSilences" and "Have You Seen Me Lately?," complete with slashing guitars and pounding piano. Recorded on the last date of their American tour, cuts like "Children In Bloom" and "A Long December" take on an added poignancy as the connection between fans and band is palpable even through a set of headphones. 2112
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, bass); Alex Lifeson (guitar); Neil Peart (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Hugh Syme (keyboards). Recorded at Toronto Sound Studios, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. All tracks have been digitally remastered. 2112 is archetypal high-concept heavy/art-rock, featuring an interconnected suite of songs and a futuristic science fiction-inspired lyrical theme (courtesy of drummer/sole lyricist Neil Peart). When it came to '70s sci fi rock epics these guys were capable of giving Hawkwind and Jefferson Starship a run for their money. The first half of the album features "2112" proper, a series of interrelated tunes that paint a portrait of a 1984/Brave New World-style future, where music and emotion are outlawed. Ultimately, our hero discovers a guitar and uses it to fight the powers that be, all to the accompaniment of vaguely Led Zeppelin-derived heavy rock riffs anddaunting time signatures. The final five tunes are unrelated to the concept piece but continue in a similar musical vein, though a little balladry is mixed in towards the end. SKU: 1003681

Training Day
Original score by Mark Mancina. The soundtrack to TRAINING DAY may enhancethe film which it accompanies, and that's all well and good. The real news for music fans, though (and particularly for hip-hop aficionados) is that it features some of the hottest contemporary rappers giving their all in an album's worth of nonstop hip-hop action. From the Lox and Nelly to Pharoah Monche and P. Diddy (who appears here in a collaboaration with none other than esteemed British rocker David Bowie), TRAINING DAY offers up driving beats, inventive samples, and most importantly, trenchant, incisive raps that get straight to the heart of what makes hip-hop work. Nightclubbing
One of Jones' best post-disco albums, recorded in Nassau, Bahamas, with a truly remarkable studio band, including the legendary reggae rhythm team of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, along with Marianne Faithful collaborator Barry Reynolds on guitar. The songs are generally arranged in an innovative, ahead-of-their-time way (echoey yet spare, with lots of deep bass) that owes a bit to dub and in any case provides a perfect backdrop for Jones' Queen of the Undead vocals. Highlights include the proto-rap "Walkin' in the Rain," (by Easybeats/AC/DC auteurs Vanda and Young) and aspooky cover of Bill Withers' "Use Me." SKU: 1002701

Virginia Creeper
Personnel: Grant-Lee Phillips (vocals, guitar, banjo, piano); Cindy Wasserman (vocals); Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar, dobro, mandolin); Jon Brion (ukulele); Bill Bonk (accordion); Zac Rae (keyboards, vibraphone); Sebastian Steinberg, Sheldon Gomberg (upright bass); Kevin Jarvis (drums); Danny Frankel (percussion). Recorded at Sunset Sound Factory, Hollywood, California in August 2003. Continuing to thrive in a solo setting following the late-1990s collapse of his critically acclaimed outfit Grant Lee Buffalo, Grant-Lee Phillips used VIRGINIA CREEPER as a return to creating music with a contingent of musicians, versus the go-it-alone approach he took on 2001's MOBILIZE. He's aided by a notable coterie of creative talents, including pop maestro Jon Brion and renowned pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz. The marriage of Phillips's dark songs and subdued musical arrangements, replete with dobro and strings, results in 11 beautifully creaky alt-country tracks that were cut inonly three days. Ladies serve as inspiration on nearly half the tunes, ranging from the brassy heroine of the fiddle-driven "Calamity Jane" and the art icon of the melancholy "Mona Lisa" to the sassy namesake of the hook-soaked "Lily-a-Passion." The cherry on the top of this country-folk masterpiece is a cover of Gram Parsons's "Hickory Wind," which finds Phillips floating through a bittersweet mix of crying lap steel and Cindy Wasserman's honeyed harmonies. Wire 1985-1990 (The A-List)
THE A LIST is a collection of tracks from Wire's Enigma releases THE IDEAL COPY (1987), A BELLIS A CUP UNTIL IT'S STRUCK (1988), IT'S BEGINNING TO AND BACK AGAIN (1989), and MANSCAPE (1990). Wire: Colin Newman, B.C. Gilbert (vocals, guitars); Graham Lewis (vocals, bass); Robert Gotobed (drums). Producers: Daniel Miller, Gareth Jones, Rico Conning, Paul Kendall, Dave Allen. Engineers include: Gareth Jones, David Heilmann, Paul Kendall. After group members pursued solo projects during the early '80s, Wire returned to the fold with a more ear-friendly, synthesized sound, while still maintaining their signature strangeness. Even with some of its rougher musical edges smoothed down, Wire's music retains its air of menace. This collection surveys the band's albums in the mid- to late '80s, when they flirted with dance beats and flaunted a precision only hinted at in their earlier, more dissonant days. The emergence of a more dance-friendly Wire is clearly shown in "Ambitious" and the mighty "Ahead," which marries a pronounced New Order feel with absurdist lyrics that nevertheless sound like pronouncements from on high in the context of this propulsive, monolithic track. "Eardrum Buzz" and "Kidney Bingos" are supremely lovely (if slightly odd) pop songs, while "Madman's Honey" and "Silk Skin Paws" with their lush, eerie vocals, have a dark majesty. But even as the band gravitated toward a more commercial sound, songs like "Feed Me" show that the dark side was still intact, as does "A Serious of Snakes," which features the line: "I'd rather make furniture than go to Midnight Mass." At The Cafe Bohemia Vol.2
Full performer name: Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers: Art Blakey (drums); Hank Mobley (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Horace Silver (piano); Doug Watkins (bass). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded live at the Cafe Bohemia, New York, New York on November 23, 1955. Originally released on Bluenote (1508). Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. This is part of Blue Note's Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. When Art Blakey invites his audience to "take off your shoes and have a ball" we know that this live set from the Cafe Bohemia will be a swinger. This second volume of Blakey's Jazz Messengers at the famous Greenwich Village nightspot is a defining document of one of the greatest small groups in jazz. Recorded the same night as VOLUME ONE, this set captures the original Messengers line-up--Blakey, Horace Silver, Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley and Doug Watkins--in a wailing performance full of swinging grooves, masterful solos and, of course, Blakey's powerful beat. Mobley's "Sportin' Crowd" kicks off the set with a bangas Blakey asserts a driving beat that kicks his men into high gear. In contrast, the standard "Like Someone In Love," featuring Dorham in the lead, is a delightfully relaxed reading. Dorham, himself, introduces Jerome Kern's "Yesterdays" and blows another sultry lead on this classic tune. Things heat up later with Mobley's "Hanks Symphony," featuring a forceful mambo beat by the leader. Another highlight comes later with "Avila & Tequila," a Latin extravaganza featuring everybody on percussion. Finally, the smoky "I Waited For You" leads to the Messengers' closing theme and enthusiastic applause. SKU: 1065961
