You take three Italian-American jazz musicians (organist Joey DeFrancesco, guitarist Frank Vignola, drummer Joe Ascione), put 'em togetherin a studio, toss out a concept (in this case, a selection of songs that are Italian pop standards associated with singers with names like Sinatra, Bennett, and Martino, and movies about organized crime), and let 'em cook.
DeFrancesco possesses that big, rich, blues-charged Hammond B-3 organ sound out of Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff--a few notes can cushion an entire room. Vignola carries on in the jazz guitar tradition of Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass, but injects it with some sharp blues and rock touches--listen to him sizzle on "Malafemmena." And Ascione isn't just the timekeeper--he plays on an equal level with the others, with crisp, multi-rhythmic drumming that adds a real spark to the proceedings. But the three can take it easy, too--listen to the espresso-rich ballad "Young at Heart" and the way they take the blues to Sicily on "O Solo Mio." The release of BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE signaled David Bowie's return to life as a solo performer after releasing three albums with Tin Machine. Reuniting with LET'S DANCE producer Nile Rodgers, BTWN found Bowie putting together a more esoteric kind of dance-rock record not nearly as accessible as "Let's Dance" or "Modern Love." Reaching back into the past as well as into the unexpected (a Bowie specialty), an interesting blend of guests contributed to this album including Al. B Sure!, jazz legends Lester Bowie, Philip Saisse & Chico O'Farrilland past guitarists Mick Ronson and Reeves Gabrels.
Throughout the album, a seamless thread of dance rhythms and an enormous amount of ethereal-sounding sax played by the Thin White Duke make for a hypnotic listening experience. Songs such as the instrumental "Pallas Athena" (featuring Lester Bowie's trumpet playing), are particularly effective in this respect. Most interesting are fresh readings of Cream's "I Feel Free" and Morrissey's "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday." Originally released on a label that went under soon after the album's release, BLACK TIE is an overlooked gem that demands to be revisited.

Although history's most celebrated Qawwal passed away in 1997, his genius lives on in the seemingly endless release of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan retrospectives and compilations. While some of these records may seem like hastily assembled cash-ins, ECSTASY is a thoughtfully curated album that presents the singer's passionate music within its proper religious context.
Culled from various live concert recordings, these five tracks are arranged in the orderof an actual Qawaali recital. The album begins with a hymn for Allah, in this case Khan's signature tune "Allah Hu Allah Hu," which starts out as an impassioned a capella call, and swiftly explodes into a swirl of percussion and Sufi choral singing. The recital continues with an "utterance of the Divine message," sung in Farsi to a classical Indian raga melody and then some pulsating Punjabi folk songs. Most unusual is a rarely performed classical Indian raga featuring sitar, tamboura, and Khan's effortless Hindi. His amazing vocals and utter sincerity will transport any listener to the heights of ECSTASY.

The first full-length release from Genesis, FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION, was recorded while the band were still teenagers in prep school. Produced by pop legend Jonathan King, FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION is, by and large, a lushly orchestrated recording--a feature that band has subsequently been very critical of. Most fans agree that this release bears little resemblance to what the band would evolve into during their next several Peter Gabriel-led releases, TRESPASS, NURSERY CRYME, and FOXTROT.
Still, there are a number of tracks here that will interest fans of Genesis's earlier years, most particularly "The Serpent" and the single, "Silent Sun." It's clear that FROM GENESIS TO REVELATION captures the band in a still-developing stage. But even then, it's quite obvious that the core members--Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford--were on to something special from the very first time they set foot in a recording studio.

Even if you think you're not familiar with the British R&B duo of Natalie Stewart and Marsha Ambrosius, you may have already heard their work. Even before releasing their debut album FLOETIC, the pair penned songs for everyone from Michael Jackson and the Roots to Bilal and Eric Benet. Moving to Philadelphia (a soul town if ever there was one) helped to bring even funkier grooves out of the pair, as heard here. There are no clever production gimmicks or cynically crafted, do-or-die hooks on FLOETIC; instead Floetry presents honest, organic material that can accurately and quite literally be described as "soul music." Earnest vocal performances full of sensuality and joy get the message across, and often-mellow grooves accentuate the duo's late-night slow-jam sensibilities. Anyone enamored of "neo-soul" artists such as Kelis, Musiq, and the aforementioned Scott should find an easy way into FLOETIC.

Does genius run in the genes? In this case, definitely yes. Shemekia Copeland is the daughter of the late blues great, singer/guitarist Johnny Copeland, and though she's inherited her father's talent for the blues, she sings them her way. Copeland has a big, boisterous, swaggering, and slightly raspy voice--imagine a cross between Etta James and Bonnie Raitt--that draws inspiration from Southern gospel-drenched soul/R&B.
On WICKED, she caresses the forlornyet insistent "Love Scene," and righteously preaches the gospel in "Whole Lotta Water." Then she turns around with the strutting Memphis funk of "Not Tonight," the Dr. John-flavored wise-women duet with Ruth Brown "If He Moves His Lips," and the acoustic Delta-styled "Beat Up Guitar," running the gamut of the blues and its various offspring. Her band is tight and professional, applying the right touches of sizzling guitar, mellow Hammond B-3 organ, and snapping drums.

ANTHEM came at the peak of Black Uhuru's career. Michael Rose was still its leadvocalist and the group was involved with Mango/Island Records, giving it significant clout. ANTHEM provides the classic Black Uhuru sound from start to finish, with a very flowing, unified feel among the tracks.
"What is Life?" starts the album off with an electrified feel, with Rose at his vocal best. "Solidarity" and "Botanical Roots" provide a similarly powerful vibe, and the album reaches its apex on the reggae classic "Black Uhuru Anthem" ("I and I are the living dread, / This is the dawn of the living dead"). Robbie Shakespeare's slow, driving bassline and Rose's carefully controlled vocals make this track's title utterly appropriate--it exemplifies all that is Black Uhuru. The album's closing track, "Elements," provides a similar feel with a more contemplative, philosophical tone.
