Rage Against The Machine
Rage Against The Machine: Zack De La Rocha (vocals); Tom Morello (guitar); Timmy C. (bass); Brad Wilk (drums). Additional personnel: Maynard James Keenan (background vocals). Engineers: Stan Katayama, GGGarth, Auburn Burell. Recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California; Scream Studios, Studio City, California; Industrial Recording, North Hollywood, California. On paper, Rage Against The Machine reads like Beavis, Boogie Down Productions and Butt-Head: an angry and enlightened rap frontman who preaches a multi-cultural alternative to what they teach you in schools and show you on TV, backed by a funky heavy metal rhythm section whose vampage and riffing pay direct tribute to the likes of the Edgar Winter Group and Led Zeppelin. But there's no sense of fusion here. Neither a metal band toying with rap nor a rap group fronting as a rock band, R.A.T.M. is four guys who were never told that there's a difference, and who don't care to know. The knowledge-is-good-but-schools-are-bad rap, "Take The Power Back," gives way to a metal instrumental bridge; and the guitar that introduces the Martin/Malcolm/Cassius homage, "Wake Up," pays its own tribute to Zeppelin's "Kashmir." The closest spiritual--but not stylistic--reference point are the alternative raps of the Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy; and Rage's "Bullet In The Head" may be the best song about TV since the Heroes' "Television, The Drug Of The Nation." Rapper Zack De La Rocha has a thin voicethat sounds more like a bored suburban thrasher than an inner-city rhyme animal, but his lyrics are something else altogether. Rising high above the nihilism of both hard-core rap and punk, he offers not just good slogans for a t-shirt, but the promise of a system to replace the one he's bent on destroying. His is a revolution with a purpose. SKU: 1003378

Ready To Die (The Remaster/+DVD) [PA]
This release includes a bonus DVD. Personnel: The Notorious B.I.G. (rap vocals); Diana King, Total (vocals);Method Man (rap vocals); Sybil Pennix (spoken vocals); Carl "Chucky" Thompson (various instruments). Producers: Sean "Puffy" Combs; Darnell Scott; Easy Mo Bee; Norman & Digga Bluez Brothers; Carl "Chucky" Thompson. Engineers: Bob Brockman; Greg Pinto; Rick Travali. Recording information: The Hit Factory, New York City; Soundtracks Recording Studio; Sound on Sound Studios, New York, New York; Chung King House Of Metal; D&D Recording Studio, New York, NY. Once he stepped out onto the scene as the rapper on the remix of Mary J. Blige's hit single "Real Love," many hip-hop fanatics anxiously awaited the debut of The Notorious B.I.G. a.k.a. Biggie Smalls. Their prayers were answered with READY TO DIE, fifteen tracks of uncut, hard-core, lyrically sophisticated rap all complemented by hypnotic beats supplied by the underground's most prominent producers. READY TO DIE resumes where his "Juicy" single left off, but separates itself from the array of hip-hop albums that don't live up to the initial hit. Blowin' up the charts using his knowledge of the streets and hard bangin' snares provided by producer Easy Mo Bee, the Bedford-Stuyvesant native Notorious B.I.G. is far from "Ready To Die." Not since the likes of Slick Rick has there been an artist so successful in the storytelling genre of rap music, creating a mental picture of life in the heads of his listeners. The up-tempo "Gimme The Loot" illustrates the hustlin' ways of a trigger-happy robbery expert stressed from the "Everyday Struggle" of life. The recurrence of the Isley Brothers tune "Between The Sheets" adds to the charm of "Big Poppa," where Biggie portrays his "player" image. No need to skip any songs, READY TO DIE is packed with hits all the way through. SKU: 6568443

Be Here Now
Oasis: Liam Gallagher (vocals); Noel Gallagher (guitar, background vocals); Bonehead (guitar); Guigsy (bass); Whitey (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Johnny Depp (slide guitar); Mark Feltham (harmonica); Mike Rowe (keyboards); Mark Coyle (programming). Recorded between November 1996 and April 1997. "All Around The World" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. Shamelessly enamored of The Beatles, Oasis uses BE HERE NOW to serve up another heaping platter of larger-than-life rock and roll garnished with Fab Fourisms. Noel Gallagher's ambitious songwriting and production (which, not coincidentally, was done at Abbey Road) result in an average song length of almost six minutes and the full, gnarly guitar soundthat's become Oasis' trademark. "Magic Pie" and "All Around The World" incorporate brassy orchestration reminiscent of "Let It Be," while the former's name seems a less-than-subtle nod to Macca's FLAMING PIE album released a few months prior. Aside from the band's constant worship at the Beatles shrine, Gallagher occasionally draws from other sources, sharply addressing the uncertainty of fame with the slam-bang rock and roll of "I Hope, I Think, I Know" and the latter-day Stone Roses sound of "Fade In-Out" which prominently features guest Johnny Depp's slide guitar. With their nemesis Blur busy trolling the noisy depths of lo-fi, American indie rock, BE HERE NOW proves to be another jewel in the crown of Brit-pop, which is now perched more firmly than ever on the collective, if occasionally swollen, head of Oasis. Amplified
Personnel: Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes (rap vocals); Meda Leacock (background vocals); Korn. Producers: Jay Dee, Q-Tip, DJ Scratch. Engineers include: Steve Souder, Jason Groucott, Ken "Duro" Ifill. Recorded at The Hit Factory, New York, New York. A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip has played a very important role in hip-hop. And though loyal Quest fans dreaded the day that the members of the threesome (sometimes foursome) would go their separate ways, everyone longed and waited patiently for the highly anticipated Q-Tip solo joint. With that in mindand a mic in hand, Q-Tip comes correct on his debut album, AMPLIFIED. With this album, the Abstract One makes it clear why his music has been so influential. The always-original Q-Tip is the type of rapper who makes his own trends. He also possesses nearly peerless skills as an MC and producer. The club-ready "Breathe and Stop" makes it hard for anyone to stay off the dance floor, and along with the album's other tracks, helps carry out a more mature hip-hop sound. Throughout AMPLIFIED, collaborations are kept to a minimum, allowing Q-Tip to show off his versatility. Two exceptions, however, are "End of Time," which features rock stars Korn, and "N.T.," a track on which Q-Tip shares the mic with longtime friend Busta Rhymes. SKU: 1031686

Foundation Ska (32 Authentic Ska Hits)
The Skatalites: Jerry Hines (guitar); Lester Sterling (alto sax); Tommy McCook, Roland Alphonso (tenor sax); John Moore (trumpet); Don Drummond (trombone); Jackie Mitto (piano); Lloyd Brevett (bass); Lloyd Knibbs (drums). Additional personnel: Bob Marley And The Wailers, Stranger Cole, Ken Boothe, JackieOpel, Margarita, Doreen Schaffer (vocals) Producers: C.S. Dodd, Duke Reid. Compilation producer: C.S. Dodd. Recorded at Jamaica Recording And Publishing, Federal Records, Kingston, Jamaica in 1964 and 1965. Includes liner notes by Chris Wilson, Brian Keyo, Lloyd Knibb and Roland Alphonso. The influence of the Skatalites on reggae, and on popular music in general, cannot be overestimated. They virtually invented the mid-'60s Jamaican style known as ska by turning American R&B rhythms inside out and giving them an island lilt. Generations of musicians the world over have sought to recapture the magic that was so effortlessly created by the Skatalites on their classic '60s recordings, collected here on a juicy two-disc anthology. Men like Jackie Mittoo and Roland Alphonso, who subsequently became premier session musicians in Jamaica, forged the Skatalites' unique, rhythmically propulsive sound. The horn stabs of R&B are inverted to punctuate the undulating staccato beat, and vocals, when employed at all, are used mostly as additional coloring. Pure ska, of the type represented here, is essentially an instrumental genre. "Simmer Down" features a young Bob Marley & the Wailers, making it plain just how important the Skatalites were in the development of Jamaican music. If you buy only one ska album, it should be this one. SKU: 1012953

Dream Sequence
Personnel includes: Blake Baxter; Moritz Von Oswald, Thomas Fehlmann (programming). Engineers: Moritz Von Oswald, Thomas Fehlmann. Blake Baxter met with little opposition when he christened himself the "Prince Of Techno." A Detroit DJ in league with the mighty Underground Resistance and an essential link between Motor City and Berlin, Baxter deserves his royal title. Residing in Berlin, Baxter kept a low profile for most of the '90s. In 2000, Berlin's Tresor label celebrated its decade-long association with the DJ by restoring to circulation 1992's long out of print DREAM SEQUENCE, the debut that cemented Baxter's legend, also appending the earlier "EP Frequencies." The album has aged well. Baxter's aggressive style, which respects both melody and muscle, complements the hard-as-nails minimalism popularized by Underground Resistance cohort Jeff Mills. "The Warning," "Laser 101," "Ex-," and "Ghost" get maximum mileage out of hardcore's throbbing basslines, percussive rushes, and filtered siren sounds, but this is music of dancefloor deliverance, not dread. "Dark Basse" and "Adrenalin" confront technological revolt--avoiding the escapism of Juan Atkins' Milky Way transport routes--and invite you to dance away future fears. The old-school dance-pop of "One Mo Time" is treated to two driving mixes. Leanand funky, "Frequency Old Skool" introduces the sparser EP tracks, most of which are compiled in the closing "Dreammaker" suite. SKU: 1051541

Quadrophenia [Remastered]
The 1996 digitally remastered reissue of QUADROPHENIA contains remixed versions of "The Real Me," "Quadrophenia," "Dr. Jimmy" and "The Rock." It comes with a 52-page booklet. The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, keyboards); John Entwistle (vocals, bass, horns); Roger Daltrey (vocals); Keith Moon (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: John Curle (spoken vocals); Chris Stainton (piano). Producer: The Who. Reissue producer: Jon Astley. Engineersinclude: Ron Nevison, Pete Townshend, Glyn Johns. Recorded at The Kitchen, Thessally Road, Battersea, England. Originally released on MCA (10004) on November 3, 1973. To write and record one successful "rock opera" is an achievement but to attempt it all over again and succeed is credit to Pete Townshend's determination and deep talent. TOMMY was a naive storyline compared to this, a story of a frustrated and angry mod in 1964. The band play blindingly good throughout and the remastered version in 1996 is outstanding. The fact that there is a storyline is almost irrelevant on a double album of excellent songs. "5:15" was the lone hit single, a sign that the pop charts were no longer a priority for Townshend; he wanted to be an artist. The subsequent film with Phil Daniels merely reinforced Townshend's vision. SKU: 1006262

Coming, The
Personnel: Busta Rhymes, Lord Have Mercy, Rampage The Last Boy Scout, Q-Tip, Jamal, Redman, Keith Murray, Dinco, Milo, Charlie Brown (rap vocals); Zhane (vocals); Wade Thoren. Producers include: RickSt. Hilaire, DJ Scratch, Easy Mo Bee, Busta Rhymes. Engineers: Peter Darmi, Rick St. Hilaire, Andy Blakelock. Recorded at Soundtrack Studios and Music Palace, New York, New York. "Woo Hah!! Got You All In Check" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Busta Rhymes has continuously rocked the hip-hop nation with his unpredictably wild style, first as one of the Leaders Of The New School, and now on his much-anticipated solo debut, THE COMING. Part of an elite group of outrageous MCs whose styles trample over rhythmic limitations (Biz Markie, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Akinyele, Redman, etc.), Busta Rhymes has created a trademark flow that accents his animated image. THE COMING is drawn around an end-of-the-world theme, with its repeated emphasis on "there's...only [being] five years left" (foreshadowing "the coming" of the millenium). Musically, the album marks the return of the new school sound of hip-hop. "Keep It Movin'," which reunites the Leaders, is a flashback to the early '90s, when rap music was based on exceptional lyrical skills, original concepts, and tracks that stacked samples every which way. Another new school pioneer, Q-Tip makes his guest appearence on "Ill Vibe," where the two MCs trade silly, free-flowing quips. And the single, "Woo-Hah!! Got You All In Check" illustrates Busta's unique talent for coming up with catchy tracks that retain an inherent toughness even as they cross over. THE COMING adds to his contributions to hip-hop and still manages to "bring the ruckus to all you..." SKU: 1001250

Room On Fire
The Strokes: Julian Casablancas (vocals); Nick Valensi, Albert Hammond, Jr. (guitar); Nikolai Fraiture (bass); Fab Moretti (drums). Recorded at TMF Studios, New York, New York. After the hype--and subsequent backlash--over the Strokes' debut album, IS THIS IT, many fans and skeptics alike came to realize that the band's catchy, punk-pillaging rock ditties were, ultimately, very difficult to resist. Their eagerly anticipated follow-up, ROOM ON FIRE, is cut from the same vintage 1970s cloth, but added flourishes keep the album from sounding like a mere redux. "What Ever Happened" opens ROOM ON FIRE with a chiming, staccato guitar riff and kicks into the immediately identifiable Strokes swagger. However, while listening to Julian Casablancas's melancholy lyrics and the song's carefully crafted changes, it's clear that this is a maturing band that knows its strengths. This notion is further supported by the hard-charging "Reptilia," one of the group's finest tunes to date. And though the Strokes opted out of working with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, the concept of expanding their palette (even if only slightly) stuck, given the presence of keyboard sounds (on the gleefully Cars-like "12:51" and "The End Has No End") and reggae-influenced guitars (on "Automatic Stop" and "Between Love & Hate"). Although ROOM ON FIRE doesn't mark a radical musical departure for the band, the concise and consistently engaging album solidifies their status as skilled rock revivalists. SKU: 6538197

Fast And The Furious Vol.2, The (More Fast And Furious)
Full title: More Music From The Fast And The Furious. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. MORE MUSIC FROM THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS will not play on Macintosh operating systems, DVDplayers, and CD-compatible video game consoles due to special copyright protection measures. Unlike the first volume of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS soundtrack, which was loaded with plenty of contemporary urban music, MORE FAST AND FURIOUS crosses into a lane full of alt-rock and electronica acts. Despite a concerted focus on entirely different genres, the energy level that reflects the relentless action and quick pace of this hot rod flick remains in the red zone. Aggro-rock rookies Hoobastank ("Crawling In The Dark") and Saliva ("Superstar") pound out the kind of crunchy grooves that'll make you wish you were out on the track burning up the straight-aways. Balancing out all this testosterone-driven riffing is trance icon BT who pops up with chugging techno ("Race Wars"), ambient-tinged orchestration ("The Fast And Furious Theme"), and mid-tempo house ("Dominic's Story"). Also showing up for the race are Mexican Rock en Espanol titans Molotov (the slow-rolling Spanish rap-rock "Polkas Palabras") and jungle pioneer Roni Size/Reprazent (a thumping "Idi Banashapan"). Essential Cheap Trick, The
Cheap Trick:Robin Zander (vocals, guitar); Rick Nielsen (guitar); Tom Petersson (bass); Bun E. Carlos (drums). Additional personnel: Chrissie Hynde, Billy Corgan. Recorded between 1977 & 1996. Includes liner notes by Ron Albanese. Although multiple Cheap Trick collections have been released, the two-disc ESSENTIAL is an excellent compilation for those wanting more than just a cursory overview of the Illinois quartet's work. The band's masterful combination of harmonies, hooks, and crunchy guitar riffs has influenced a legion of younger artists--including Guns N' Roses, Material Issue, and the Smashing Pumpkins--and this hard-rocking mix is on full display throughout the album. The amazingly catchy radio hits--"Surrender," "Dream Police," and "I Want You to Want Me"--are all here, along with lesser-known tracks such as the Beach Boys-flavored "Southern Girls" and a rollicking reading of the Move's "California Man." ESSENTIAL also presents a live version of the melancholy "Mandocello" (with special guest Billy Corgan) and other concert performances, proving that Cheap Trick are a formidable power-pop band both on the stage and in the studio. Merry Christmas
Personnel: Mariah Carey (vocals); Dann Huff (guitar); Lenny Pickett (saxophone); Loris Holland (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Greg Phillinganes (piano);Walter Afanasieff (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards, synthesizer, bass, tambourine, claps, programming); Randy Jackson, Kirk Lyons (bass); Buddy Williams, Bernard Davis, Omar Hakim (drums); Dave Silliman (percussion); Gary Cirimelli, Dan Shea, Robert Clivilles, David Cole (programming); Melonie Daniels, Shanrae Price, Kelly Price, Cindy Mizzelle (background vocals). Children's Choir: Wayne Daniels, Jr., David Daniels, Nathan Daniels, Jodi Walton, 3D, Jazzmin Walton, Janaye Walton, Tobitha Shinique Owens. Producers: Mariah Carey, Loris Holland, Walter Afanasieff. Recorded at the Hit Factory, New York. At this stage of her career Mariah Carey does not need to prove herself, but her voice is so powerful that with each new recording she, once again, reminds you: "Listen to what I can do." Vocal gymnastics and Christmas songs are not often thought of as a compatible combination, but on MERRY CHRISTMAS Mariah jumps, climbs, crawls, twirls and dashes her way through both traditional fare and original Christmas songs. She shifts through styles, offering fans from all musical camps a gift of their own. Her "Silent Night" shows off a studied vocalization where liquid phrasing is key. "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" shows off a dynamic voice that is hard to match. She has fun with the Phil Spector goodie "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)," a song straight out of '60s girl-group heaven. There is even a "Joy To The World" medley mixing the old and the new--the traditional Christmas song and the Three Dog Night hit. And, as usual, her gospel-voiced background singers are out in full force. There are two ways to enjoy this album. One is to sit back and revel in Mariah Carey's vocal fireworks, and the other is to pour yourself a glass of egg-nog, get cozy by the tree and have yourself a MERRY CHRISTMAS. SKU: 1001324

White City
Personnel: Pete Townshend, Steve Barnacle, Mark Brzezicki, John "Rabbit" Bundrick, Tony Butler, Peter Hope-Evans, Dave Gilmour, Simon Clark, Roddy Lorimer, Dave Sanders, Tim Sanders, Peter Thoms, Chucho Merchan, Pino Palladino, Simon Phillips, Clem Burke, Phil Chen, Ewan Stewart, Jackie Challenger, Mae McKenna, Lorenza Johnson, Emma Townshend. Recorded at Eel Pie Studio, Twickenham; Eel Pie Studio, Soho, London; A.I.R. Studios, London. WHITE CITY, which Pete Townshend called a novel, recalls the depth of TOMMY. There are many memorable tracks on this collection, including "Hiding Out," whose deceptive sweetness belies the detached destruction of "Crashing byDesign." The bracing "Face the Face" is as musically gripping as any of Townshend's solo work, as is the rumbling "Give Blood." Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour lends on a hand on the former and Big Country drummer Mark Brzezicki puts his walloping stamp on various cuts as well. SKU: 1009067

There Is Always One More Time
Personnel includes: Johnny Adams, Ruth Brown, Aaron Neville (vocals); Duke Robillard, Wayne Bennett, Michael Toles, Walter "Wolfman" Washington (guitar); Bill Foots (alto & baritone saxophones); Ed Petersen, Alvin "Red" Tyler (tenor saxophone); Terry Tullos (trumpet); Craig Wroten (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, synthesizer); Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Harry Connick, Jr., David Torkanowski, Jon Cleary (piano); Dr. Lonnie Smith (organ); James Singleton, David Berard, George Porter, Jr., Darrell Francis, Sr. (bass); Johnny Vidacovich, Shannon Powell, Herlin Riley (drums); George "Geeje" Jackson, Jr. (congas). Principally recorded at Ultrasonic Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana. Includes liner notes by Scott Billington. Digitally remastered by Laurie B. Flannery (Northeastern Digital Recording, Southborough, Massachusetts). This is a wonderful anthology celebrating the last decade and a half of recordings by the New Orleans singer Johnny Adams. Though his first recordings were already 25 years behind him at the time, Adams enjoyed a career resurgence when he signed with Rounder in the '80s. He explored his remarkable gifts fully over the series of recordings he made for the label, devoting a couple of entire releases to specific writers such as Doc Pomus and Percy Mayfield. His bluesy depth resonates whether he's performing New Orleans funk, soulful balladry, jazzy strutting, or even making forays into the world of pop, such as 1986's AFTER DARK, and he is at home with a widevariety of composers. His version of George and Ira Gershwin's "But Not for Me" is a showstopper and should be heard by any fan of Tony Bennett's. The set includes one previously unissued number, the Pomus/Rebennack original "Happy Hard Times." This collection is a wonderful introduction to a great singer. SKU: 1049903

Indigo Girls: Amy Ray (vocals, guitar, bouzouki, mandolin); Emily Saliers (vocals, guitar, banjo). Producers includes: John Keane, John Reynolds, Peter Collins, Scott Litt, Indigo Girls. Engineers include: Tim Oliver. Recorded between 1987 & 2000. Includes liner notes by Susan Faludi. All tracks are digitally remastered. The feminist Everly Brothers You get to make the call with this well chosen best-of, featuring 14 career-spanning tracks from all their albums (beginning with their debut, originally released as an indie, STRANGE FIRE) and concluding with two previously unreleased new tunes. Highpoints include the Girls' initial MTV hit "Closer to Fine," (still their anthem) and "Galileo," a Beatles-esque meditation on reincarnation. "Shame on You" is probably the hardest rocking song they've ever done, perhaps because both Girls play electric guitar for a change, or perhaps (just as likely) due to the presence of alt country god Steve Earle on harmony vocals. Instant Vintage
Personnel includes: Raphael Saadiq (vocals, guitar, bass); D'Angelo, Angie Stone, Calvin Richardson, T-Boz. INSTANT VINTAGE was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for BestR&B Album. "Be Here" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Though Raphael Saadiq kicked around for much of the '90s, working as bassist, guitarist, and producer for everyone from D'Angelo to the Bee Gees and contributing his own cuts to the soundtracks of such films as RIDE, BABY BOY, and HIGHER LEARNING, 2002's INSTANT VINTAGE is--incredibly enough--his first full-length solo album. The title of the album--and the involvement of such luminaries as Angie Stone and the aforementioned D'Angelo--should be a clue as to the sound here. While Saadiq fully avails himself of cutting-edge production and technology, he's more interested in Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye than in R. Kelly. While he doesn't wave his history-conscious tendencies like a flag, there's more melodicism and good old-fashioned soul to these tunes than you'll find of many contemporaneous R&B recordings. Duke Elegant
Personnel: Dr. John (vocals, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Bobby Broom (guitar, background vocals); Ronnie Cuber (saxophone); David Barard (bass, background vocals); Herman Ernest III (drums, background vocals); Cyro Baptista (percussion). Recorded at RPM Sound Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Dr. John. Dr. John (a.k.a. Mac Rebennack) may have been a couple of months late in releasing this Duke Ellington centennial tribute, but his execution of these legendary numbers is still a delight. Rather than handling each classic as if it were a delicate museum piece to be treated with kid gloves, Rebennack instead infuses them with his signature style, which leans more toward New Orleans R&B. Songs such as "I'm Gonna Go Fishin" and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)" are given light funk workouts dominated by chugging grooves and popping bass. The album constantly shifts gears, as Dr. John turns "Satin Doll" into a Latin shuffle, hops on the organ to inject some Jimmy Smith-flavoredphrasing into "Perdido," and transforms "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" into a Meters-like workout. Dr. John's brightest moments come on "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" and "Flaming Sword." Rebennack transforms the former from wistful ballad into an upbeat declaration of freedom while on the latter, his piano breezily dances along the top of a syncopated rhythm in a manner reminiscent of his late friend James Booker. Look Sharp
Personnel: Joe Jackson (vocals, harmonica, piano); Gary Sanford (guitar); Graham Maby (bass); Dave Houghton (drums). Reissue producer: Mike Ragogna. Recorded at Eden Studio, London, England. Includes liner notes by Scott Schinder. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson at Universal Mastering Studios West, North Hollywood, California. He burst onto the scene a couple of years later than Elvis Costello and Graham Parker, but Joe Jackson completed British rock's Angry Young Man trinity. As evidenced by his '79 debut, Jackson was a bit more eclectic than Parker or (early) Costello, and a touch ahead of both in terms of harmonic sophistication (though he downplayed his compositional chops at the beginning). The straight-ahead guitar-bass-drums trio that backed him on his first three albums was inspired by punk, but clearly more a part of the burgeoning new wave scene, marrying punk's aggression with smart, hooky pop song structures. True to the spirit of the times, Jackson's irritated by just about everything; tabloids ("Sunday Papers"), his libido ("Pretty Girls"), muzak ("Instant Mash"), you name it. Fortunately, his pop craftsmanship is unerring, so no matter how irate he gets, his anger is backed up with infectious melodies and rhythms. Jackson moves deftly from the punk raving of "Got theTime" to the reggaefied "Fools in Love" and the '60s-ish pop of his first monster hit "Is She Really Going Out With Him" without missing a step.
