Recorded at Axis, The Studio, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; The Blue Room, New Jersey; Electric Ladyland, New York, New York; The Stable, West Chester, Pennsylvania. The City of Brotherly Love continues to be a wellspring of neo-soul talent. Another artist moving from Philadelphia to the national stage is singer Vivian Green, who co-wrote most of her debut A LOVE STORY and subsequently wowed audiences as an opening act for Maxwell's tour. Weaned on a steady diet of jazz and R&B, Green takes a laid-back approach that makes her a natural balladeer, and uses the fertile field of relationships--failed and otherwise--as a rich source of material. Whether she's questioning the erratic quality of a romantic union ("Emotional Rollercoaster"), resigning herself to a broken romance over a bed of cocktail lounge piano and trumpet ("No Sittin' By The Phone"),or defiantly questioning a lover's unrealistic demands ("Superwoman"), Green displays a sophistication that continually belies her young age. Her forays into more contemporary nuances like slightly dance-flavored beats on the captivating "Wishful Thinking" further ensures Vivian Green's place alongside fellow Philly denizens Jill Scott and Erykah Badu. Purple
Stone Temple Pilots: Scott Weiland (vocals, guitar, percussion); Dean DeLeo (electric & acoustic guitar, percussion, drums); Robert DeLeo (bass, guitar, percussion); Eric Kretz (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Paul Leary (guitar); Brendan O'Brien (percussion, guitar, mellotron). Recorded at Southern Tracks, The Record Plant, Paisley Park and Harptone Studios between May 1993 and March 1994. PURPLE includes "12 Gracious Melodies," an uncredited hidden track at the end of the record. Stone Temple Pilots' second album, PURPLE, meshes guitar rock with grunge, and forges deeper into hard rock territory. Lurching out of the speakers with aggressive bottom-heavy rock, PURPLE is an example of what brought guitar-oriented rock back into the spotlight in the nineties. The 5 songs are driving, stripped to the basics of guitar, bass, and drums. PURPLE exemplifies straight ahead rock. Embracing styles from grunge to late-1960s hard rock, Stone Temple Pilots are a band accomplished at writing abrasive rock songs, but aren't afraid of quieter acoustic melodies. The album starts with the menacing "Meat Plow," with the lyrics, "Fine place for a day full of breakdowns," leaving the listener to wonder if PURPLE is an analogy to a bruise. But as the bruise begins to fade, so does STP's over-wrought aggression. "Interstate Love Song" shows their sensitive side both lyrically and musically, and Scott Weiland's vocals are pushed beyond his hard rock growl into a near-sensitive croon. What makes Stone Temple Pilots click is their ability to write basic, riff-heavy guitar rock. PURPLE finds Stone Temple Pilots comfortable in their hard-rock medium, but also willing to take the chance on their softer side. SKU: 1005867

Nu Blaxploitation
Full performer name: Don Byron And Existential Dred. Personnel: Don Byron (baritone saxophone, clarinet, percusssion, background vocals); Dean Bowman (vocals); Biz Markie (rap vocals); Sadiq (spoken vocals); James Zollar (trumpet); Curtis Fowlkes (trombone, background vocals); Uri Caine (piano, organ, Clavinet, background vocals); David Gilmore (guitar); Reggie Washington (bass, background vocals); Ben Wittman, Rodney Holmes (drums); Johnny Almendra (percussion, background vocals). Recorded at Bearsville Studio, Woodstock, New York from December 27, 1997-January 5, 1998 and live at The Knitting Factory, New York, New York on Jaunary 14, 1998. Within the world of jazz experimentalists, clarinetist Don Byron stands apart as someone willing to wander down various cultural alleys to get his artistic kicks. Nearly every one of Byron's albums has been built around a distinctive musical tradition--whether klezmer, hot jazz, Afro-Latin swing, or traditional post-bop jazz forms--to the point where he has seemingly become a one-man cultural studies program. As can be deduced from the title of his Blue Note debut, Byron's current focus is black urban culture, all its tributaries and relations. Byron and his ExistentialDread ensemble have sculpted an album that is predominantly based in the funky sounds of Donald Byrd and the Ohio Players, with poet Sadiq Bey offering jazzy, free-associative monologues suggesting a (sometimes) light-hearted Gil Scott-Heron. There are strolls through Funkadelic rock ("I'm Stuck"), freestyle hip-hop (a live "Schizo Jam") and Latin-infected swing ("Hagalo"). But what unifies this album are the two music-less sketches called "Domino Theories," where domino-playing sages sit around the park, telling stories and reminiscing. These two pieces are like lost scenes from Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing," giving NU BLAXPLOITATION a meditative glow. SKU: 3104395

Rocket Cottage
Steeleye Span's ninth album was the second produced by British eccentric Mike Batt--best known for his bubblegum hits as part of the Wombles, stars of a British kiddie TV show--and while ROCKET COTTAGE is less renowned than its hit predecessor, ALL AROUND MY HAT, it's nearly as fine an album. Poppy and mostly lighthearted, the songs on ROCKET COTTAGE are an odd lot, from the brief instrumental "The Bosnian Hornpipes" to the Shirleyand Dolly Collins-like suite "Fighting For Strangers" to an impromptu unaccompanied version of "Camptown Races" (supposedly recorded spontaneously by the group's five male members while lead singer Maddy Prior was in the loo). The irony-tinged opener "London" and an excellent version of the standard "The Twelve Witches" are particular highlights. SKU: 1006973

Asia
Asia: John Wetton (vocals, bass); Steve Howe (vocals, guitar); Geoff Downes (vocals, keyboards); Carl Palmer (drums). Recorded at Townhouse Studio, London, England. Prog-rock fans everywhere got very excited when they found out that ex-members of such bands as Yes (guitarist Steve Howe and keyboardist Geoff Downes), King Crimson (bassist/vocalist John Wetton), and ELP (drummer Carl Palmer) were forming a supergroup, Asia. With its 1982 self-titled debut, the quartet surprisingly crossed over to the more mainstream pop audience with no problem, hitting the top spot on the album charts. Time and againhere, each member shows his mastery of his respective instrument. ASIA is chock full of compositions showcasing the quartet's keen pop sensibilities, such as the uptempo Top 10 hit "Heat of the Moment," and the more laid back "Only Time Will Tell." SKU: 1005611

Easy Rider
Producers: Stephen Blauner, Joel Sill,Steve Barri. Compilation producer: Mike Ragogna. Includes liner notes by Mike Ragogna. The definitive 1960s soundtrack to a definitive 1960s film, this album can be seen as the soundtrack not only to the film, but to the era itself. Ranging in style from proto-metal (Steppenwolf) and dope rock (Fraternity of Man) to folk balladry (Roger McGuinn), EASY RIDER conjures up the wild and surreal images and associations for which the decade has been celebrated. The crunching blues-rock of Jimi Hendrix's "If Six Was Nine" espouses a lo-fi, greasy, axe-wielding ethic that contrasts nicely with the more gentle, reflective melodies interspersed with increasing frequency towards the end. The soundtrack closes with McGuinn crooning the elegiac "Ballad of Easy Rider." SKU: 4129896

Payback, The (The Godfather Of Soul)
Personnel: James Brown (vocals, electric piano); Jimmy Nolen, Hearlon Martin (guitar); Maceo Parker (flute, alto saxophone); St. Clair Pinckney (tenor saxophone); Darryl "Hasaan" Jamison, Isiah "Ike" Oakley, Jerone "Jasaan" Sanford (trumpet); Fred Wesley (trombone); Fred Thomas, Charles Sherrell (bass); John "Jabo" Starks (drums); Johnny Griggs, John Morgan (percussion). Recorded at International Recording, Augusta, Georgia. Includes recent and original release liner notes by Alan Leeds. All tracks have been digitally remastered. THE PAYBACK was originally released in 1974 as a 2-LP set. For this reissue, the album was digitally remastered from the original master tapes, including a recently discovered longer version of "Mind Power", which is included here for the first time. In1973, Brown was hospitalized for exhaustion. Mere days after his release from the hospital, his oldest son was killed in a car accident. A few months later, he'd completed the sessions for THE PAYBACK. There are echoes of Brown's anger and suffering throughout the album. The title song, with its drop-dead funky bassline, is full of vitriol, as Brown cries out for revenge and compensation. "Doing the Best I Can" is an attractive soul ballad in which Brown sings of maintaining one's balance against adverse circumstances, despite "wondering which way to turn." Though the grooves are propulsive, this is a relatively low-key effort for Brown, filled with a subtly masked darkness. On the harrowing, bluesy "Forever Suffering," Brown sings of separation and loneliness, asking how long the suffering will continue. As the tune progresses, he sings with unsettling detail of the lengths to which his pain drives him. After repeated vows to beat his head against the wall, it becomes clear that the emotions being expressed here, and on the rest of THE PAYBACK, are very real. Fortunately, an artist of Brown's caliber is capable of channeling these feelings into great art. SKU: 1019693

Prince & The New Power Generation: Prince, Levi Seacer Jr., Tony M., Tommy Barbarella, Kirk Johnson, Damon Dickson, Sonny Thompson, Michael Bland, Mayte. Additional personnel: Carmen Electra (rap); Eric Leeds (saxophone); Mike Nelson, Kathy J., Dave Jensen, Brian Gallagher, Steve Strand (horns); Michael Kopelman (bass); Airiq Anest (programming); D.J. Graves (scratches); Jevetta Steele, Jearlyn, J.D., Fred (background vocals). Producers: The New Power Generation, Keith "KC" Cohen, George Black, Prince. Engineers: Michael Koppelman, Dave Friedlander, Ray Hahnfeldt, Brian Poer, Steve Noonan. Recorded at Paisley Park Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota. All songs written or co-written by Prince. This album followed Prince's debut with the New Power Generation, DIAMONDS AND PEARLS, and marked a turning point in the career of one of the most talented, prolific, and successful pop stars of the '80s and '90s. For many, the album introduced a new Prince whose music now encompassed rap and other contemporary radio-friendly sounds. For others, SYMBOL signaled the beginning of Prince's downward spiral into self-indulgence and lack of focus. After the album's release, Prince changed his name to the unpronounceable symbol emblazoned on the cover. It is hard to argue with Prince's innovative, accessible, and utterly singular musical vision. While not everything on this double-length set is strong, SYMBOL offers such an abundance of material that there is sure to be something here for everyone. Dance floor booty-movers like "The Max" and "Damn U" alternate with atmospheric ballads ("Sweet Baby") Other tracks(the chaotic free-funk of "Arrogance;" the dark gospel pulse of "7") are more resistant to categorization. The hit singles "My Name Is Prince" and the irresistible James Brown-style jam (complete with JB's-ish horns) of "Sexy M.F." provide sing-along dance anthems. There is enough intensity and diversity here to prove that Prince is still a force to be reckoned with. SKU: 3103830

Legend
Includes liner notes by Mississippi John Hurt. Mississippi John Hurt fans have long had to satisfy themselves with the relatively few available recordings of the folk-blues master. Hurt recorded in the late '20s, then disappeared from public view until the folk revival of the '60s. Thus, a few 78s and a handful of albums from the '60s constituted his entire legacy. That all are wonderful only left fans clamoring for more. Along with MEMORIAL ANTHOLOGY, a two-disc home recording of a 1964 concert, 1997's LEGEND helps to satisfy this need. According to the liner notes, LEGEND is "the product of a late-night recording session circa 1963-64." The atmosphere is informal, with Hurt expanding on his more structured studio versions of familiar numbers. Best of allis the seven-minute version of "Stack-O-Lee," which here includes a spoken introduction explaining Stack's motivations (Hurt describes him as "a desperator"). Because of less-than-perfect sound quality and some quirks in performance, LEGEND is not the place to start your Hurt collection. But it will doubtless find a welcome, well-worn spot in the collections of those who have already exhausted the rest of Hurt's wonderful recorded body of work. SKU: 1011954

In Square Circle
From putting out a couple albums a year to only three studio albums between 1980 and '85, some might have thought Stevie Wonder's muse took a vacation. However, between his many cameo appearances, Steve Wonder released IN SQUARE CIRCLE in 1985. It was a slight return to the great music he penned in the '60s and '70--a playful yet earnest blend of funk and soul--but with a more tailored sound. The hit single "Part-Time Lover" best exemplifies that blend. Although the music's programmed nature is evident, Stevie's keyboard and drum parts are aces. And of course, he getsa little help from an all-star cast, including Philip Bailey, Deniece Williams, Luther Vandross and Stevie's own diamond-in-the-rough Syreeta Wright, among others. SKU: 1019355

Producers include: Timbaland, Organized Noize, Swizz Beatz, Trackmasters. WORD OF MOUF was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. "Rollout (My Business)" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Male Rap Solo Performance. For this Atlanta-based rapper, keeping true to street roots has never been a concern, since he's always remained so close to them. Far from the east and west coast hip-hop star mills, this southern sensation rose up from the underground and never abandoned what he'd learned there. His third album WORD OF MOUF may find Ludacris surrounded by a brace of guests that include both heavy hitters (Mystikal, Jagged Edge, Nate Dogg) and more unknown names (Sleepy Brown, Keon Bryce, Fate Wilson), but he draws on his own considerable verbal skills and unique urban vision as the foundations for his work. Debut
Personnel: Bjork (vocals, keyboards); Jon Mallison (guitar); Corki Hale (harp); Oliver Lake (alto saxophone); Gary Barnacle, Mike Mower (horns); Marius De Vries, Paul Waller, Martin Virgo (keyboards, programming); Garry Hughes (keyboards, Hammond organ, programming); Luis Jardim (bass, drums, percussion); Bruce Smith, Nellee Hooper (drums, percussion); Talvin Singh (tabla); Jhelisa Anderson (background vocals). Engineers include: Jim Abbiss, Nellee Hooper, Howie Bernstein. With DEBUT, the Icelandic thrush Bjork Godmundsdottir (late of the Sugarcubes) brings her knowing innocence and quirky voice to bear on an engaging program of renegade pop tunes. The unusual instrumental textures on songs such as "Human Behavior," fleshed out with timpani, small percussion instruments, vibraphones and harps, suggests a post-modern version of Phil Spector. As a singer, Bjork's swooping octave leaps and guttural cries betray the elemental contradictionsin her music. She projects the girlish innocence and barely constrained sensuality of a wise child, old beyond her years (the techno-reggae romanticism of "Venus As A Boy," the bouncy house changes of "Big Time Sensuality" and "Violently Happy"), and sometimes she sounds like she's trying to rediscover how such doe-eyed love might actually feel, as if for the first time (the mysterious groove of "One Day" and the jazzy standard "Like Someone In Love," with its spare harp accompaniment). There's a pronounced techno feel to DEBUT, with its airy synthesizers and spacious, uncluttered mixes, but without the cool, mechanized detachment of that genre. On "Aeroplane" Bjork combines a saxophone quartet with Middle Eastern-flavored percussion to steer her tale of obsessive love just outside of the pop mainstream, while the unusual saxophone harmonies of "The Anchor Song" lend a folkish color to her extended metaphors on home and erotic immersion. It's precisely Bjork's sense of adventure that gives DEBUT such a cool exotic flavor. SKU: 1006812
