Tres Hombres
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank "Rube" Beard (drums). Also available withFANDANGO on 1 cassette and as part of the ZZ Top 6 Pack. On 1973's TRES HOMBRES, everything came together for ZZ Top. While it was near inconceivable that the trio could better its superb previous effort, 1972's RIO GRANDE MUD, here ZZ Top somehow found a way to make the riffs tastier and the blues boogie more lethal. One of classic rock's most identifiable standards, "La Grange," resides here, borrowing liberally from John Lee Hooker. But there's even more great blues-rock to feast on--the moderately paced "Waitin' for the Bus," the 12-bar blues of "Jesus Just Left Chicago," and the party-hearty anthem "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers" (a tune Van Halen has covered live from time to time). Elsewhere, the thick rocker "Precious and Grace" easily gives Led Zeppelin a run for its money. SKU: 3101730

One Foot In The Grave
Personnel: Beck (vocals, guitar, bass, drums); Calvin Johnson, Sam Jayne (vocals); Chris Ballew (guitar, bass); James Bertram (bass); Scott Plouf (drums); Mario Prietto (bongos). Recorded at Dub Narcotic, Olympia, Washington in October 1993 and January 1994. This collection of performances by musical chameleon Beck Hansen came out hard on the heels of the mega-success of MELLOW GOLD, as the MTV world was promoting him as the alternative rock poster boy of the anthemic "Loser." The unsuspecting listener picking up ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE will be disarmed (to say the least) by its content--the album is a collection of folksy, bluesy recordings of the sparest lo-fi variety. Although there are some Sebadoh-style punky screamers such as "Burnt Orange Peels" in the mix, Beck mostly spends most of his time on ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE creating beautiful shoegazer-folk moments such as "Cyanide Breath Mint," which transcends its slacker title with an alluring drone and beautifully dark lyrics. "Hollow Log" is your basic pretty, fireside folk song done right, while "I Get Lonesome" has Beck and K Records supremo Calvin Johnson duetting on a simple, mournful tune. While those weaned on Beck's higher-gloss MTV-ready output may not fully appreciate ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE, it's the first true example of his versatility, not to mention a subtly beautiful record. Page Avenue [ECD]
After moving their sound from a more grunge heavy style to this album's more emo inflected hardcore style the band recorded this (their debut) with legendary punk figure John Feldman (Goldfinger, The Used etc). The band capture the early 2000 punk sound of merging metallic guitars with pop-punk andgrunge's strained vocals. This album was launched using one of the most downloaded singles ever, 'Until The Day I Die'. SKU: 6557784

Dear Heather
Personnel include: Leonard Cohen (vocals, guitar, piano, Jew's harp); Sharon Robinson (vocals, various instruments); Mitch Watkins (vocals, guitar, electric guitar); Ron Getman (vocals, steel guitar); Anjani Thomas (vocals, piano); John Crowder (vocals, bass guitar); John Bilezikjian (oud); Raffi Hakopian (violin); Paul Ostermayer (flute); Garth Hudson (accordion); Bob Sheppard (tenor saxophone); Sarah Kramer (trumpet); Bill Ginn (piano); Roscoe Beck (bass instrument); Stan Sargent (bass guitar); Richard Crooks, Johnny Friday (drums). Producers: Leanne Ungar; Sharon Robinson; Anjani Thomas; Ed Sanders; Henry Lewy. While there are some familiar elements present, much of DEAR HEATHER is a stark contrast to virtually all of Leonard Cohen's previous recorded work. Where the Canadian troubadour's previous albums all sounded like carefully constructed towers of song, built piece by painstaking piece (and Cohen has confirmed this as his working process), DEAR HEATHER seems to be an entirely more spontaneous offering. One might speculate that longtime Buddhist Cohen has taken the precepts of Zen to heart in presenting a batch of compositions unmarred by the effects of obvious labor. Lyrically and melodically, these songs are more sparse and pared-down thananything else in Cohen's catalog. Some are whittled down to only a simple recitation repeated numerous times over a skeletal chord progression. By simplifying his approach to such an extreme degree, it seems as though Cohen is trying to get as close as possible to the heart of his work, without the literary trappings of his past accomplishments. Nevertheless, one link with his previous work is the bonus live cut tacked on to the end of the disc. In the tradition of past quirky Cohen covers like Irving Berlin's "Always" and Richard Blakeslee's "Passing Thru," the gravel-voiced singer tackles the country classic "Tennessee Waltz" with trademark aplomb that also reminds the listener of Cohen's ever-present sense of humor. Rhythmeen
ZZ Top: Billy F. Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill(vocals, bass); Frank Beard (vocals, drums). Recorded at Charlatan's, Hollywood, California; Ardent Studios, Memphis, Tennessee; John's House Of Funk, Houston, Texas. There are some things in America that you can count on year after year, like Coca-Cola, the Super Bowl and the latest ZZ Top album. RHYTHMEEN is no exception. On these 12 tunes Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill continue to do what they have always done best: making lowdown, swampy rock and roll with a monstrous guitar crunch. As usual, the Topsters' sense of humor is in the forefront. Witness "Zipper Job," a rocking ode to sex-change operations, or the slow-grinding, bizarrely ominous "Vincent Price Blues." In fact, most of the tunes on RHYTHMEEN contain a good dose of the band's loopy, Texas-fried scamp sensibility. Dusty Hill's vocals retain their raw, morning-after-the-morning-after tequila hangover quality. And fans will be pleased to note that Gibbons' guitar work is as dirty and untamed as ever. On "Loaded" he reaches new depths of unwashed guitar glory; he sounds as if he's playing through a prehistoric garbage compactor. SKU: 1000956

Rocks
Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, keyboards, electric bass); Joe Perry (acoustic & electric guitars, lap steel guitar, six string bass, bass guitar, background vocals); Brad Whitford (acoustic & electric guitars); Tom Hamilton (guitar, bass); Joey Kramer (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Paul Prestopino (banjo). Recorded at The Warehouse, Waltham, Massachusetts and The Record Plant, New York. ROCKS has been digitally remastered using Sony's 20-Bit Digital Super Bit Mapping process. This reissue includes new deluxe packaging with original release liner notes, photos, and artwork. One of the reasons why Aerosmith, after a number of creatively lean years, are still given legendary credence and an eager ear with each new release, Rocks encapsulated the very essence of rock 'n' roll. They may havebeen the target of detractors who still pinned them as nothing more than a poor man's Rolling Stones, but Rocks pioneered a strength and swagger and real depth that remains very nearly unsurpassed. From the slowly escalating 'Back In The Saddle' to the dying strains of 'Home Tonight', this album held the full spirit and soul of Aerosmith in both hands. SKU: 5037865

Poses
Personnel includes: Rufus Wainwright (vocals, guitar, piano); Jeff Hill, Damian Legassick (guitar, keyboards, programming); Julie Dupras (violin); Melissa Auf Der Maur (bass); Butch, Kevin Hupp, Michael Vincent Chaves (drums); Alex Gifford. Producers include: Pierre Marchand, Alex Gifford, Damian Legassick, Ethan Johns, Damian Legassick. When Rufus Wainwright first appeared on the music scene, the public was startled not only by the fact that this son of legendary musicians (a McGarrigle Sister and papa Loudon) was a true artist in his own right, but that he had a sound that set him so far apart from any of his contemporaries. Wainwright's second record POSES doesn't need to blaze any new stylistic ground since he's already so distinctively operating in his own furrow. The album pretty much picks up where its predecessor left off, offering elaborate, piano-based melodies that owe more to Tin Pan Alley (or at their most modern, Brian Wilson) than to any contemporaneous trend. The arrangements arerich with unusual harmonies, which serve Wainwright's unusual voice and lyrics extremely well. His high, keening tenor lets loose a torrent of self-effacing lyrics that examine his own place in the world with a cynic's mind and a believer's heart. The cynic, represented mostly by the witty turns of phrase, spends most of POSES battling it out with the believer, given voice by the lustrous melodic turns. Here's hoping they keep their aesthetically rewarding conflict going for a long time to come. SKU: 1060893

No Stranger To Shame [PA]
Contains an untitled hidden track after "No Stranger To Shame." Personnel: Uncle Kracker (vocals); Mike Bradford (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards); Dobie Gray, Mark McGrath (vocals); Dean Parks, Phillip Sayce (guitar); Wanda Vick (dobro, mandolin, fiddle); Dan Higgins, Bill Reichenbach (saxophone); Jimmie Bones (piano, organ background vocals); Richard Baker (piano); Larry Paxton (upright bass); Russ Kunkel, Scott Krause, Jeff "Shakey" Fowlkes (drums). Producers: Michael Bradford, Uncle Kracker. Recorded at Metry And Metry, Mount Clemens, Michigan and Chunky Style Studios, Burbank, California. KidRock pal Uncle Kracker (A.K.A. Matt Shafer) may have arrived as yet another white guy fishing off the pier of rap-rock, but it was the sweetly sung smash "Follow Me" off his debut DOUBLE WIDE that put this Michigan native over the top. With his sophomore bow NO STRANGER TO SHAME, Uncle Kracker keeps hip-hop in the mix, but his main thrust is tapping into the rich musical legacy found south of the Mason-Dixon line. Beyond a solid cover of the '70s nugget "Drift Away," (featuring a cameo by its originator Dobie Gray), Shafer's love of country, soul, and blues reverberates throughout. When he's not pouring on the cornpone all over the David Allen Coe-co-written "Letter To My Daughters" or making like Waylon Jennings on the twang-fest "To Think I Used To Love You," Mr. Kracker pumps plenty of Stax-flavored horns into the soulful "I Do." With crunchy guitar, turntable scratching, and an aggressive flow in "Keep It Comin'" making sure the hick-hop faithful return, cuts like the swamp-rock vibe of "Thunderhead Hawkins" and rap-like sing-a-long title track (featuring Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath) ensure they'll stick around. Oh Aaron
Contains an untitled hidden track which occurs after "Cowgirl (Lil' Mama)." Personnel includes: Aaron Carter, Nick Carter, No Secrets (vocals); Brian Kierfulf (guitar, programming); Josh Schwartz, Paul Gendler, Michael Thompson (guitar); Mike Rose, Nick Foster (keyboards, programming); Tony T, Andy Goldmark, Marc Nelson (background vocals). Producers include: Brian Kierulf, Josh Schwartz, Scorpio, Rose & Foster, Andy Goldmark. Engineers include: Brian Kierulf, Josh Schwartz, Bill Malina. Even if adolescent pop star Aaron Carter is destined to become the Jimmy Osmond of the 21st Century, he's determined to go out fighting. Following up the huge success of its predecessor, OH AARON follows a similar formula, employing elements of R&B, hip-hop and pure pop production. Though the title song concerns Carter's difficulty in scoring a boatload of tickets to a Backstreet Boys concert for his friends, the young pop idol largely eschews the romantic ballad style of said teenpoppers--that may come after he gets a bit more puberty under his belt. Instead, this is largely a party album, powered by funky synth bass, drum loops, and sock-it-to-'em hooks. On "Not Too Young, Not Too Old," Carter sings about playing both sides of the age game to his advantage. "Stride" finds Aaron rapping over the chorus of Matthew Wilder's '80s hit "Break My Stride." Though he engages in an amiable rap style for most of the album, Carter does manage to croon one sentimental ballad, "I'm All About You," which will surely have his predominantly female following weeping into their junior highyearbooks. Song For You, A [Remastered]
The Carpenters: Karen Carpenter (vocals, drums); Richard Carpenter (keyboards, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Louie Shelton, Tony Peluso (guitar); Red Rhodes (steel guitar); Bob Messenger (tenor saxophone, flute, alto flute); Tim Weisberg (bass flute); Earl Dumler (oboe, English horn); Norm Herzberg (bassoon); Joe Osborn (bass); Hal Blaine (drums). Digitally remastered by Richard Carpenter. A SONG FOR YOU, Karen and Richard Carpenter's fourth album, is an unusual record. Alongside the usual million-selling hits, here including "Top of the World," "Hurting Each Other," "Goodbye To Love," and the film theme "Bless The Beasts And Children," A SONG FOR YOU contains a number of brief instrumentals designed to showcase Richard Carpenter's keyboard and arranging skills. Elsewhere, sibling Karen sings as beautifully as ever, and her dusky, clear alto is at its most expressive. The CD was remastered by Richard Carpenter in 1998 as part of a general overhaul of the Carpenters' A&M catalogue. A limited-edition Japanese release features 32-bit digital remastering and anLP-style slipcase. SKU: 1074078

Make A Jazz Noise Here
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, synthesizers); Ike Willis, Mike Keneally (guitar, synthesizers); Kurt McGettrick (contrabass clarinet, baritone saxophone); Paul Carman (soprano, alto & baritone saxophones); Albert Wing (tenor saxophone); Walt Fowler (trumpet, flugelhorn); Bruce Fowler (trombone); Bobby Martin (keyboards); Scott Thunes (Mini-Moog synthesizer, bass); Ed Mann (vibraphone, marimba, percussion); Chad Wackerman (drums, percussion). The third collection from the infamous 1988 final world tour, MAKE A JAZZ NOISE HERE is easily one ofZappa's most challenging live recordings in his massive catalog. Comprised mostly of instrumental masterpieces ("King Kong," "T'Mershi Duween"), bizarre group improvisations ("When Yuppies Go To Hell") and a few comedic novelty songs ("Stevie's Spanking"), this two-disc set is a revealing look at one of Zappa's most accomplished (and largest) bands of his career. Also included are some unique (although short) quotes from Stravinsky's "L'Histoire Du Soldat" and Bartok's "Piano Concerto #3." What's more, this is a great illustration of how Zappa actually "played" the band. His use of sampled sound bites ("Fire And Chains") and electronically manipulated sound effects ("Star Wars Won't Work") along with his command of instant stylistic changes in mid-song ("The Black Page") gives us a picture of his immense tonal palette from which he created each performance. It is sad, however, that this was the last time the world would hear this brilliant artist in a live setting. SKU: 1007260

Da Hood
Personnel includes: Mack 10, Lil Jon, Ice Cube, Techniec, Timbaland, Cash Money Millionaires, Deviossi,Skoop, Cousteau, K-Mac (rap vocals). Producers include: Leslie Brathwait, Young Trey, Timbaland, Lil Jon, R. Coes. Left-coast rapper Mack 10 has been around the proverbial block a few times since his 1996 Westside Connection debut, which probably accounts for his relaxed, world-weary style on this journey through what must be well-trodden territory to rap aficionados. The 'hood may be in many locations, but it's been full of the same characters and the same situations since time immemorial, or at least since it was known as the ghetto. Chirpy Funkadelic/Outkast-type beats are much in evidence here, providing a colorful backdrop to Mack 10's familiar but never boring tales on tracks such as "Welcome To the Hood," "Hittin' Switches," and "Life As a Gangster" ("you can hate it but it ain't complicated"), and elevating PRESENTS DA HOOD well above the gangsta-rap norm. Blue Kentucky Girl (Remastered & Expanded)
Includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks. Emmylou Harris & The Hot Band: Emmylou Harris (vocals, acoustic guitar); Albert Lee (guitar, mandolin); James Burton, Rodney Crowell (guitar); Hank DeVito (pedal steel guitar); Ricky Skaggs (fiddle, background vocals); Glen D. Hardin, Tony Brown (piano); Emory Gordy, Mike Bowden (bass); John Ware (drums). Additional personnel: Tanya Tucker, Sharon Hicks, Cheryl Warren, Don Everly, Glenn Campbell (vocals); Brian Ahern (guitar, banjo); Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Lincoln Davis, Jr. (accordion); Bill Payne (piano); Duke Bardwell (bass); Ronnie Tutt (drums); Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt (background vocals). Recorded at the Enactron Truck, Beverly Hills, California. Originally released on Warner Bros. (3318). Emmylou Harris' albums of the '70s all follow a well-defined game plan. First, she selects a stellar repertoire of classic country songs, new material from neo-traditionalists like Rodney Crowell, and one rock oldie (this time it's the Drifters' "Save the Last Dance for Me," which Harris took into country music's top-five). She then surrounds herself with Nashville's finest players-such as guitarists James Burton and Albert Lee, fiddler/mandolinist/singer extraordinaire Ricky Skaggs, and pedal-steel wizard Hank DeVito. Finally, Harris pours her heart and soul into every vocal performance. The resulting albums, of which BLUE KENTUCKY GIRL was the fifth, defined the state-of-the-art for serious country enthusiasts of the era. By the time BLUE KENTUCKY GIRL was recorded, Harris' already impressive taste in material had reached near perfection. Particularly inspired choices here include the George Jones rarity "Beneath Still Waters," the Louvin Brothers' "Every Time You Leave," and Jean Ritchie's gorgeous "Sorrow in the Wind." Among the more obvious-butequally fine-choices are the Hank Williams Sr. hit "They'll Never Take His Love from Me," Gram Parsons' "Hickory Wind," and Rodney Crowell's "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues," the last featuring Dolly Parton and Linda Rondstadt on harmony vocals.
