One Trick Pony
Personnel: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar, percussion); Richard Tee (vocals, piano, tambourine); Patti Austin (vocals); Hugh McCracken (acoustic & slide guitars); John Tropea (acoustic guitar); Eric Gale, Hiram Bullock, Jeff Mironov, Joe Beck (electric guitar); Jon Faddis (flugelhorn); Don Grolnick (synthesizer); Tony Levin (bass, background vocals); Anthony Jackson (bass) Steve Gadd (drums); Ralph Macdonald (percussion); Lani Grove (background vocals). Principally recorded at A&R Studios and The Hit Factory, New York, New York. The 1980 film ONE TRICK PONY starred and featured the music of Paul Simon, who portrayed a singer-songwriter of considerably less renown than himself. Full of heart, humor and realism, it's one of the best music-oriented dramas extant, and this soundtrack album is equally substantial. ONE TRICK PONY marked an important turning point in Simon's artistic development. Though his musical sophistication had grown, previous to this album his lyrical approach was still oriented towards the linear storytelling style he began with in the '60s. Here, Simon began to develop a more poetic, imagistic approach to lyric-writing. While the salsa horn section of the hit "Late In The Evening" foreshadows Simon's later cultural experiments, it's tracks like "Jonah" and"Oh, Marion" that really tell of things to come. In the former, Simon plumbs the biblical metaphor, skillfully interspersing it with more autobiographical-sounding details. On the latter, he uses metaphysical, slightly surreal imagery to tell the story of a man at odds with his own emotions. Both tunes are representative of the great literary leap Simon's writing took with ONE TRICK PONY, an album full of inventively constructed lyrics matched with Simon's usual harmonic sophistication. Elastica
Elastica: Justine Frischmann, Donna Matthews (vocals, guitar); Annie Holland (bass); Justin Welch (drums). Additional personnel: Dan Abnormal (keyboards). The pop viciousness exuding from Elastica's pores far surpasses any qualities thus far exhibited in Britain's "new glam" movement. One time Suede member (pre-"London" era) Justine Frischmann and Donna Matthews weave togetherassorted guitar and vocal textures, recalling various levels of pop genius in a disdainful, Kinks-esque tone. Frischmann's dry lyrics are deliciously biting. Her sarcastic take on stardom ("if I can't be a star I won't get out of bed"), groupies ("Drivel head knows all the stars/Loves to suck their shining guitars"), and impotence ("no need to whine boy") are all icily casual. Musically, Elastica is a pop lover's dream. Combining a Buzzcocks-tight rhythm section with enviable guitar delirium, Elastica's grip on pop sensibility is dead-center. What sets the band apart from their peers is their unstoppable wit. Already stars in their native England, Elastica have gotten it all but have also maintained a fabulously jaded perspective in regards to their desires--as Frischmann herself points out in "Waking Up," all she needs is "a guitar and a lover who pays me." What could possibly be more gratifying. All hail Elastica. SKU: 1001103

Foreign Affairs
Personnel: Tom Waits (vocals, piano); Bette Midler (vocals); Gene Cipriano (clarinet); Frank Vicari (tenor saxophone); Jack Sheldon (trumpet); Jim Hughart (bass); Shelly Manne (drums). Recorded at Filmways/Heider Recording Studios, Hollywood, California in July & August 1978. FOREIGN AFFAIRS is the most ambitious of Waits' '70s albums. In addition to the West Coast jazz style his early work drew so heavily on (here he goes to the source, with vet Shelly Manne on the drum stool), there's also a bit of lavishorchestration to solidify the classy bygone-era feel of Waits' songs. Perfect losers' love songs like "Muriel" were always his bread and butter, but the elegant'40s-ish balladry of "I Never Talk to Strangers" (a good-humored beaty-wooed-by-the-beast duet) and the epic beat poetry excursion "Potter's Field" were the furthest extensions to date of Waits' ambitions. Ironically, things are most interesting when the arrangements are scaled down, as on the contagiously sentimental barroom ballad "Sight For Sore Eyes." SKU: 5048753

Jazz Masters
Personnel includes: Astrud Gilberto (vocals); Joao Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim (vocals, guitar); Gil Evans (arranger, piano); Marty Paich, Don Sebesky, Claus Ogerman, Al Cohn (arranger, conductor); Bud Shank (alto saxophone, flute); Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Joao Donato (piano); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Grady Tate (drums). Compilation producers: Michael Lang, Gene Lees. Recored in New York, New York and Los Angeles, California between 1964 and 1966. Includes liner notes by Gene Lees. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of the Verve Jazz Masters series. AstrudGilberto's entry in the nicely appointed Verve Jazz Masters compilation series shows exactly why the Brazilian singer is deserving of such an accolade. In her '60s heyday, Gilberto was often derided by jazz purists for her vibrato-less "desafinado" (deliberately slightly off-pitch) singing style and deadpan, childlike voice. But the diminutive bossa nova star has since been a huge influence on dozens of jazz and pop singers. VERVE JAZZ MASTERS is less of a greatest hits package than it is a smartly balanced retrospective of many of Gilberto's best performances. Her biggest hits, "Call Me" and "Summer Samba," are not included, and her signature tune, "The Girl From Ipanema," is only represented by a live take from a 1964 Carnegie Hall concert. The collection places equal emphasis on Gilberto's bossa nova-style interpretations of jazz standards and on her signature Portuguese-language sambas. The smartly packaged CD also features remastered sound and several rare photographs. SKU: 4123940

England Half English
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Billy Bragg & The Blokes include: Billy Bragg (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Ben (electric guitar, bouzouki, barizouki); Lu (guitar, background vocals); Terry Edwards (tenor saxophone); Dave Woodhead (trumpet); Caroline Hall (trombone); Mac (piano, Wurlitzer piano, Hammond B-3 organ, background vocals); Simon (bass); Martyn (drums, shakers, tambourine, background vocals); Lorraine Brown (background vocals). Recorded at Monnow Valley Studio, Steet Level, and Roundhouse Studio, London, England. This is the first full album by Billy Bragg and The Blokes. The first song starts with the sound of Ian McLagan's piano; McLagan spent the '70s carousing with the Faces, and his rough-and-tumble prowess is a hallmark of this band as well. Bragg's songs continue along familiar lines (the plight of workers, class disparities, etc.), this time also focusing on issues of national identity. As always he relishes both strongly articulated sociopolitical issues ("NPWA," with its chorus of "No power without accountability") as well as more poetic circumstances. The latter is nicely represented by the album-closing "The Tears of My Tracks," which finds its protagonist broke, selling all of his records, but full of sly confidence and unshakable hope, delighting in the sun filling his empty room. Many of the songs have their music credited jointly to the whole band, and the camaraderie isn't mere socialist pie-sharing, it's genuine aesthetic truth--this album is aresult of the entwined enthusiasms of Billy Bragg AND The Blokes. White On Blonde
Texas: Sharleen Spiteri (vocals, guitar, programming); Ally McErlaine (guitar, programming); Eddie Campbell (keyboards, programming); Johnny McElhone (bass, programming); Richard Hynd (drums, programming). Additional personnel: Roger Ward (guitar); Claire Miles, Anne Stephenson, Sally Herbert, Claire Orsler, Susan Dench, Gini Ball, Chris Pitsillide (strings); Alex Silva, Terry Disley (keyboards, programming); Paul Taylor (programming); Steven Granville (background vocals). Producers: Texas, Mike Hedges, Dave Stewart, Rae, Christian. Engineers include: Texas, Kenny Macdonald, Ian Grimble. Texas were generally felt to have peaked with their debut album; Rick's Road continued a downward sales spiral, even though it contained some strong material. This album was a pleasant surprise, picking up awards everywhere and still selling in large quantities. For a band who might have been looking over their shoulders, this is a supremely confident album, full of good songs written bythe band and, in particular, by Sharleen Spiteri and ex-Altered Image John McElhone. Respectable rock for the 90s, from the full production of tracks such as 'Halo' to the chiming tension created by 'Put Your Arms Around Me'. SKU: 1006731

Together
Country Joe & The Fish: Joe McDonald (vocals, guitar); David Cohen (vocals, guitar, piano, organ); Barry Melton (vocals, guitar); Bruce Barthol (vocals, bass); Chicken Hirsh (vocals, drums, percussion). Recorded at Vanguard's 23rd St. Studio, New York, New York. Includes original release liner notes by Sam Charters. The Fish's best selling third album was, perhaps not coincidentally, less concerned with controlled substances and radical politics than its predecessors, althoughan interest in both obviously remained. For psychedelia see the Barry Melton guitar workout "Cetacean," and for politics see "The Harlem Song," a piece of ironic blackface minstrelsy that its writer, Country Joe McDonald, was fond of saying offended even him. Elsewhere, the album is characterized more by the opening "Rock and Soul Music," a funny half-spoken tribute to James Brown that featured prominently in the band's stage act for years (including a segment where they played baseball). Pieces of outright whimsy like "Away Bounce My Bubbles" and "Waltzing in the Moonlight," an over the top ode to a flamenco dancer the band apparently enjoyed, also make an appearance. SKU: 1014915

American Beauty
Also available in a VHS/CD packagewith the video ANTHEM TO BEAUTY. Contains the hidden tracks, "Ripple" and "American Beauty Radio Spot" which follow the live version of "Truckin'." Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia (vocals, guitar, pedal steel guitar, piano); Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (vocals, harmonica); Phil Lesh (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Bill Kreutzmann (drums); Micky Hart (percussion). Additional personnel: Dave Nelson (electric guitar); David Grisman (mandolin); Howard Wales (piano, organ); Ned Lagin (piano); Dave Torbert (bass); New Riders Of The Purple Sage. Recorded at Wally Heider Studios, San Francisco, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. AMERICAN BEAUTY was an instant classic when it was first released November of 1970. It is among the most satisfying and enduring of the Grateful Dead's studio recordings, expanding as it does on the engaging mix of country, blues, and folk materials they first coined earlier in the year with WORKINGMAN'S DEAD. The musical vision of the Dead is more sharply focused on AMERICAN BEAUTY--from the serene reflection and compassion of the opening "Box Of Rain" and the earthy mysticism of "Ripple," to the sensual rock of "Sugar Magnolia" and the anthemic proto-boogie of the closing "Truckin'." But then, every tune on AMERICAN BEAUTY has attained a classic resonance, both from decades of steady airplay, and the way the Dead seemed to continually revive these popular standards for their concert repertoire. Also available with WORKINGMAN'S DEAD on one cassette. SKU: 1009248

Danzig Vol.2 (Lucifuge)
Danzig: Glenn Danzig (vocals); John Christ (guitar); Eerie Von (bass); Chuck Biscuits (drums). Recorded at Hollywood Sound Recorders, Larrabee Sound Studios and Summa Music Group, Los Angeles, California. While Danzig's sophomore effort from 1990, DANZIG II: LUCIFUGE, wasn't exactly as strong as the band's self-titled debut, it still managed to contain several standout tracks that remain among Danzig's all-time best. While the debut wasn't an immediate hit upon release, it succeeded in attracting a wider metal following (Glenn Danzig's previous bands specialized in punk) and establishing the band as one of hard rock's most promising new acts. DANZIG II also took more chances musically than its predecessor--while the majority of the album is rock-based, other stylesare touched upon that were previously unexplored by the band. "Her Black Wings" remains one of Danzig's most evil-sounding compositions (especially its sinister guitar riff), and became a popular video on MTV's Headbanger's Ball program. Also included is the explosive album (and subsequent concert) opener, "Long Way Back From Hell," as well as such other rockers as "Snakes of Christ" and "Tired of Being Alive." But the biggest surprises on DANZIG II: LUCIFUGE are undoubtedly the tender, Elvis Presley-sounding composition "Blood and Tears" and the semi-ballad "Devil's Plaything." SKU: 1073205

Compilation producer: Barry Riddlington. Includes liner notes by Barry Riddlington. All tracks have been digitally remastered. A double-disc compilation released to coincide with the 35th anniversary of the founders of the British folk-rock scene, SOME OF OUR YESTERDAYS has a most appropriate title. The operative word is "some,' as this anthology covers only the decade from 1985 to 1995. These 22 tracks come from five albums, RED AND GOLD, OLD NEW BORROWED BLUE, EXPLETIVE DELIGHTED, THE FIVE SEASONS and GLADYS'LEAP; there is no rare or unreleased material, and all of these albums are in print. On the positive side, this is a well-chosen selection that mostly sticks to the best tracks. As such SOME OF OUR YESTERDAYS is equally of use to the curious newbie wanting to explore beyond LIEGE AND LIEF and the casual fan wanting to replace old vinyl with a superior overview of these albums' key tracks. Nursery Days
Includes liner notes by Woodie Guthrie. NURSERY DAYS may be of more interest to parents than some children--Woody Guthrie's distinctive voice has never been for all tastes--but it's a fine collection of classic children's songs. Divided between silly singalong tunes like "Jiggy Jiggy Bum" and "My Yellow Crayon" and more instructive songs like "Clean-O" and the subtly moralized "Don't You Push Me Down," NURSERY DAYS is a delightful and engaging record. Guthrie wrote most of these songs for his own children, and the overriding sense onegets from listening to these 16 tracks is one not of a singer addressing his audience, but a father playing with his kids. Whether the sweetly goofy "Bubble Gum" or the spirited "Race You Down the Mountain," Guthrie's songs amuse and entertain kids and adults alike. SKU: 4123968

Live At Woodstock
Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar); Larry Lee (guitar); Billy Cox (bass, background vocals); Mitch Mitchell (drums); Juma Sultan, Jerry Velez (percussion). Compilation producers: Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, John McDermott. Recorded live at the Woodstock Festival, Bethel, New York on August 18, 1969. Includes liner notes by David Fricke. Jimi Hendrix was the headliner at the 1969 Woodstock Festival. Ironically, he got to go on around dawn on Monday morning, by which time there were only (...only) 60,000 remaining parishoners--the last act. Hendrix's Gypsy Sun & Rainbows emerged from a communal summer of jamming in the upstate arts community, but these other musicians are largely inauidble. So what we have in WOODSTOCK is a high energy test flight of Hendrix's last two touring trios, featuring Experience-drummer Mitch Mitchell and Jimi's old Army buddy, the groove oriented Fender bassist, Billy Cox. Following hot on the heels of the acclaimed BLUES, this second gem from the Hendrix archives finds Hendrix in transition: from a rock and pop approach, to Sky Church music--Jimi'sfree form synthesis of blues, modal jazz, funk and ethnic sources. An early arrangement of "Hear My Train A-Comin'," and such old warhorses as "Red House" and "Voodoo Child" are given spirited blues treatments. Following the national anthem, Jimi builds to another emotional catharsis with his breathtaking "Woodstock Improvisation"--which showcases his taste for modern jazz and flamenco--while his poignant instrumental reverie "Villanova Junction" reflects the influence of Wes Montgomery. This one is an essential for fans--WOODSTOCK showcases Jimi Hendrix as a guitarist's guitarist. SKU: 4131975

Scars
Soil: Adam Zadel (vocals, guitar); Ryan McCombs (vocals); Shaun Glass (guitar); Tim King (bass); Tom Schofield (drums). Recorded at Groovemaster Studios, Chicago, Illinois. While most of the heavy rock bands making a big splash circa 2001 were squarely in the Slipknot/Korn post-apocalyptic rap-metal axis, Soil seems to have deeper roots (no pun intended). Instead of getting on the rap-metal gravy train, this fearsome fivesome seems to be influenced in equal parts by the harder side of early-'90s grunge and '70s heavy/blues-rock. In Ryan McCombs's larger-than-life vocals, one can discern traces of Scott Weiland and Layne Staley without much difficulty. And when they're not thrashing and banging like an atom bomb in overdrive, the band lays into the kind of riffs that suggest they've spent some quality time with some musty oldUriah Heep and Mountain albums. Compared to some of their rootless contemporaries, that's an unusual amount of historical consciousness. SKU: 1067217

Engineers: Don Cobb, Donivan Cowart, Bradley Hartman Principally recorded at Magnolia Sound Studios, North Hollywood, California and Bullet Recording Studio A, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Robert K. Oermann. "Craftsman" may be the perfect word to describe Texas songwriter Guy Clark. He is, after all, an artist who labors over his work until it is solid bedrock. The irony, in Clark's case, is that for all his painstaking attention to detail, his songs roll off with an easy sureness, as if he just knocked them off while waiting for a bus. Make no mistake: Clarke, like John Prine and Townes Van Zandt, knows how difficult it is to create an entire world within two or three minutes. CRAFTSMAN presents three albums (GUY CLARK, THE SOUTH COAST OF TEXAS, BETTER DAYS) in their entirety. Clark instills the songs with his rough but dignified world-view, where "Comfort and Crazy" sums up the love of his life, where ill-fated smugglers contemplate the weight of their mistakes from jail cells, and where grown men finally learn to mourn their fathers. Clark presents each precise universe with little to no fanfare. The rigors of his world do not suffer superfluousness or window dressing gladly. He simply inhabits them, thereby shifting the tectonic plates everso slightly in our own day-to-day existence. SKU: 4119485

Confessions (Special Edition)
Full performer name: Usher - The Glamorous Life Usher. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Usher (vocals); Ludacris, Lil Jon (rap vocals); Thicke, Rich Harrison (various instruments); Bobby Ross Avila (guitar, piano, Wurlitzer piano, keyboards, Moog synthesizer, programming, vinyl scratches); Daniel Marino (guitar); James Wright (Wurlitzer piano, bass); Jimmy Jam (Fender Rhodes piano); Larry Cox, L-Roc (keyboards); LaMarquis Jefferson (bass); IZ (drums, percussion, vinyl scratches); Sean Garrett, Darcy Aldridge, Paula Patton (background vocals). Producers include: Just Blaze, Valdez Brantley, Jonathan "Lil Jon" Smith, Usher raymond, James Lackey. Personnel include: Usher - The Glamorous Life Usher (vocals); Alicia Keys (vocals); Kanye West, Lil Jon, Ludacris, Shyne, Twista (rap vocals); IZ (drums, percussion). Producers: Lil Jon; Jermaine Dupri; Just Blaze; Bryan-Michael Cox. Recording information: Lacococo, Alpharetta, GA; Circle House, Miami, Florida; The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. Usher has been a symbol of tender sexuality ever since he shifted from teenage sensation to soulful superstar. He's breathtakingly good at what he does; possessing that undefinable essence known to a select few soul crooners (Al Green, D'Angelo, etc.) who radiate sensuality through song, Usher hasreached an apex on the sultry CONFESSIONS, his fifth studio album. After the obligatory intro, Lil Jon kicks in with his exhortations on the catchy, dance-floor-ready single "Yeah." Usher follows that up with the sublimely sweet "Throwback," a torch song with a fantastic Motown hook. On "Confessions Part II," he exposes his most vulnerable side when admitting to his lover that he's fathered a child with another woman. Exemplifying his versatility, Usher follows the standard pop ballad "Simple Things" with the guitar-riff-driven "Bad Girl," somewhere between 1970s funk and '80s Prince. CONFESSIONS is the sound of an R&B luminary at the top of his game. SKU: 6571022
