Crazy Dreams
Includes a 24 page booklet. Patsy Cline was one of America's best singers. When she emerged in the 1950s, Cline's style was all her own: a subtle, then-daring fusion of country, mainstream pop, blues, and torch song. Her music is filled with tales of heartache, divorce, devotion (to love and to God),and life's bumpy roads. Cline made people swoon, dance, and cry. Her influence can be heard in the music of Reba McEntire, k.d. lang, and the female singers in the alternative country and rockabilly scenes. CRAZY DREAMS features such hits as "Walking After Midnight" and "Crazy Dreams." It also includes lesser-known goodies like the gentle rocker "Stop, Look and Listen," the full-bodied "Lovesick Blues," and the late-night melodrama "Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray." With its informative liner notes, this disc is a perfect introduction to the music of Patsy Cline. SKU: 1013760

Unplugged
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Andy Fairweather-Low (guitar); Chuck Leavell (keyboards); Nathan East (bass); Steve Ferrone (drums); Ray Cooper (percussion); Katy Kissoon, Tessa Niles (background vocals). UNPLUGGED won 1993 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. "Tears In Heaven" won the Grammy for Song Of The Year, and "Layla" was named Best Rock Song. Eric Clapton's live performance on MTV's strip-down-the-rockers show allowed the heavily-blues-influenced guitarist a chance to show off another, underrated side of histalent--his voice. It's especially interesting to hear Clapton in an acoustic setting, because he made his mark as one of the early proponents of high-decibel rock. Here, sorting through numerous blues standards by the likes of Robert Johnson and Leadbelly, Clapton gives a lesson in technique, style and musical passion. His own, newer material allows him to stretch and play, while the heavily-grooved, slowed-down remake of his classic "Layla" is the essential standout. "Tears In Heaven," a moving tribute to his son's passing, is emotionally raw, yet stylistically smooth--a difficult task to achieve. Stripping down the music of an artist as technically proficient and historically based as Eric Clapton was a stroke of genius. Hence, it's no surprise that the result, UNPLUGGED, is brilliant as well. SKU: 1003667

Beautiful Vision
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, piano); Herbie Armstrong (acoustic guitar); Chris Hayes, Chris Michie (guitar); Sean Fulsom (pipes); John Allair (organ); David Hayes (bass); Tom Dollinger, Gary Malabar, Peter Van Hooke (drums); Michele Segan (percussion); Bianca Thornton, Pauline Lozano, Annie Stocking (background vocals). Recorded at The Record Plant, Sausalito, California. Morrison kicked off the '80s with a new musical direction, and BEAUTIFUL VISION marks that turning point. Though Van was a lifelong devotee of American roots music, he put his R&B influences on the backburner for a while, instead pursuing the more spiritual side of his muse, which had always been present, but never given this much room to roam since his very first release, ASTRAL WEEKS. An important element here is the synthesizer and trumpet work of Mark Isham, which provide spacious, ambient musical textures, upon which Van's spiritual insightsfloat. Detractors claim that this period in Morrison's artistic development (a process that continued unabated throughout his entire career), was too mellow, too new-agey. What they fail to grasp is the fact that Morrison was probably the only artist capable of utilizing the very elements they bemoan and not turning it into a goopy, pseudo-mystical mess. The man has a genuine gift for articulating the spiritual. A notable exception to this direction is the funky "Cleaning Windows," a light-hearted look back at one of Morrison's youthful occupations. Miss Machine
The Dillinger Escape Plan: Benjamin Weinman, Brian Benoit, Chris Pennie, Greg Puciato, Liam Wilson. Producers: Steve Evetts; Benjamin Weinman; Chris Pennie. Recording information: Water Music Recorders, Hoboken, New Jersey (2004); Mission Sound, Brooklyn, New York (2004); Backroom Rehearsal Studios, Rockaway, New Jersey (2004). Released almost two years after Dillinger Escape Plan's previous recording, IRONY IS A DEAD SCENE (featuring guest singer Mike Patton of Faith No More/Mr. Bungle fame), MISS MACHINE finds the band sporting a new vocalist, but still offers the same incredibly complex mix of heavy metal, hardcore, avant-garde jazz, and progressive rock. Sounding at once more abrasive and more accessible, the New Jersey quintet takes the art-rock innovations of Shudder to Think and adds the extreme intensity of death metal. The band also throws in the experimental edge of Mr. Bungle and the dynamic chops of DISCIPLINE-era King Crimson to create something entirely its own. Less a collection of songs and more a multi-faceted tour through the outer boundaries of rock music, MISS MACHINE willchallenge even the most regimented pop fan to lay aside preconceptions and take the journey. Rugrats In Paris
Producers include: Cutfather & Joe, Mark Mothersbaugh, Robert Casale, Laurent Boutonnat, Peter Amato. The bubblegum-flavored accompanying music to the second full-length film starring Nickelodeon's favorite tykes is a follow-up to the ultra-diverse soundtrack of THE RUGRATS MOVIE. It still manages to come up with a few surprises. Kiddiecore is represented by a handful of tracks including Jessica Simpson's Mariah Carey-like "Final Heartbreak," and 2BE3's Desmond Child-penned "Excuse My French," a harmony-rich number that rivals anything Max Martin has come up with for either 'N Sync or the Backstreet Boys. Also included are "My Getaway," a bouncy solo jam by TLC's T-Boz, and a dancehall-flavored mix of the Baha Men's novelty smash "Who Let the Dogs Out?" As with its predecessor, the most engaging tracks on RUGRATS IN PARIS are the eclectic ones. Among them are the Wyclef Jean-produced SineadO'Connor track "When You Love," characterized by swirling dynamics and ethereal vocals. Elsewhere, Mylene Farmer's "L'Histoire D' Une Fee, C'est..." brings to mind The Cocteau Twins and Vanessa Daou chilling with Massive Attack. But the one song sure to hook parent and child alike is an unrecognizable Cyndi Lauper chortling away on the gorgeous, Celtic-flavored "I Want a Mom." SKU: 1046354

Egypt
Personnel: Youssou N'Dour (vocals); The Fathy Salama Orchestra (various instruments); Babou Laye (kora); Beugue Fallou Ensemble (percussion, background vocals); Mbaye Dieye Faye (percussion); Kabou Gueye, Souka Gueye, Mama Gueye (background vocals). Recording information: Hany Mihanna Studio, Cairo, Egypt; Mix City, Cairo, Egypt; Stuido Xippi, Dakar, Egypt. International pop star Youssou N'Dour explores of the themes and sounds of Senegal's Sufi culture on this striking 2004 release. Markedly different than the artist's other albums, on which African elements combine with Caribbean influence and various American styles (including soul, jazz, and rock), EGYPT moves away from N'Dour's trademark pop and deep into the territory of traditional religious music. Though characterized by an undercurrent of West African rhythms and inflections, the sound here--as the title indicates--draws on North African and Middle Eastern Arab music, and features such regional instruments as the oud, the arghul (a double-reed bamboo flute), tablas, and various Arab Gulfpercussion. There is a distinct classical aura here (the personnel list includes an arranger, a conductor, and a score manager). The Fathy Salama Orchestra, which backs N'Dour throughout, features--in addition to Egyptian flutes and drums--first and bass violins, and the group's complex, elegant interplay gives these recordings a stately, stirring feel. N'Dour's voice, in contrast to its usual role as a high, soaring lead, blends subtly into the musical fabric here. A recording notable for its focus, passion, and beauty, EGYPT is possibly N'Dour's riskiest and most artistically rewarding album. SKU: 6558274

Arias
Personnel: Grover Washington, Jr. (saxophone); Robert Freedman (arranger, conductor); Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Billy Childs (piano); Ron Carter (bass); TheOrchestra Of St. Lukes. Producers: Grover Washington, Jr., Robert Freedman. Recorded at Giandomenico Studios, Collingswood, New Jersey and Sony Music Studios, New York, New York between May and August 1999. Includes liner notes by Laraine Perri, Christine Washington, and Jackson Braider. ARIA is a beautiful and touching end to a 30-year recording career, completed just four months to the day before Washington's untimely death in 1999. It was the saxophonist's dream to return to the same classical repertoire he grew up with in his hometown of Buffalo, New York and he accomplishes this here with panache. ARIA focuses on opera, but casts it in a jazzy light. Throughout his career, Washington worked to blend seemingly disparate styles of music together. This fusion between classical and jazz is one of his most successful efforts. Performing with the Orchestra of St. Luke's under the direction of Robert Freedman, and accompanied by the piano stylings of Billy Childs and bassist Ron Carter, Washington performs memorable versions of Bizet's "Je Crois Entendre Encore," Puccinni's "O Soave Fanciulla," Massenet's "Pourquoi Me Reveiller" and others. He replaces the soprano voice with the saxophone's lyricism, and imbues this 19th century music with a renewed sense of romanticism. SKU: 1030738

One of the most predominant and celebrated rock bands of all time, Pink Floyd originally comprised Roger 'Syd' Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright. The band spearheaded Britain's psychedelic movement with extended, improvised sets and a highly visual light show. Their debut album for EMI, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, was largely written by Barrett, but, he could not withstand the demands made of him by its success and he was replaced by Dave Gilmour in 1968. Ummagumma was at the forefront of progressive rock in 1969. Their latent talent finally exploded in 1973, with Dark Side Of The Moon. The album became one of the biggest selling records of all time. In 1979 the group unleashed The Wall, a Waters-dominated epic which has now become second only to Dark Side Of The Moon in terms of sales. Internal friction resulted in the departure of Wright in 1979 and by 1983 Pink Floyd's fragmentation was now evident to all and an acrimonious parting ensued. In 1987, Mason and Gilmour resumed working together under the Pink Floyd banner. This resulted in A Momentary Lapse Of Reason. A live set, culled from the previous world tour, Delicate Sound Of Thunder followed in its wake. In 1994, The Division Bell, marked the re-inclusion of Wright as a full-time member. SKU: 1002625

Manic Moonlight
King's X: Doug Pinnick (vocals, bass); Ty Tabor (guitar, programming, loops, background vocals); Jerry Gaskill (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Alien Beans, Houston, Texas between February & May 2001. One of the best-kept secrets in all of heavy metal and prog rock remains the veteran Texas trio King's X. Loved by musicians and largely ignored by the mainstream, the band has built a rabid and dedicated cult following since the late '80s, issuing a total of nine studio albums. That's not to say that King's X hasn't had many close calls with breaking through to thebig time, with such faves of the extinct MTV show "Headbanger's Ball" as "It's Love," "Black Flag," and "Dogman," and inclusion in VH-1's "Top 100 Hard Rock Bands of All Time." On their ninth release, 2001's MANIC MOONLIGHT, the group has issues another solid set of prog-metal tunes with a heavy melodic edge--just lend an ear to standouts such as the album-opening "Believe," the title track, "False Alarm," and "Static" to see what most of the world has been missing out on all these years. Between Thought And Expression (The Lou Reed Anthology)
Contains material from LOU REED (1972) through MISTRIAL (1986) plus 2 Velvet Underground songs, 4 previously unreleased studio tracks, an excerpt from METAL MACHINE MUSIC, a 12-minute live version of "Heroin" (featuring Don Cherry) and a live version of "Voices Of Freedom" from 1987 with Youssou N'Dour and Peter Gabriel singing backup and Rick Bell on saxophone. It comes packaged in a 6" x 12" longbox and includes a 44-page booklet with liner notes by Rob Bowman and insights provided by Lou Reed in recent interviews. Personnel includes: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Steve Howe, Mick Ronson, Robert Quine, Paul Keough, Bob Kulick (guitar); L. Shankar (electric violin); Caleb Quaye (guitar, piano); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Marty Fogel, Rick Bell (saxophone); Randy Brecker, Don Cherry (trumpets); Steve Winwood, Bob Ezrin (keyboards); Michael Fonfara (keyboards, background vocals); Peter Wood (keyboards, accordion); Jack Bruce, Prakash John, Bruce Yaw, Ellard Boles, Tony Levin (bass); Fernando Saunders (bass, guitar, background vocals); Fred Maher, Richie Dharma, Michael Suchorsky (drums); Sammy Merendino (percussion); Youssou N'Dour, Peter Gabriel, Ruben Blades, Michael Wendroff, Joanne Vent (background vocals). Lou Reed's post-Velvets work is a tangle of genre-hopping, role-playing, decadence and inspiration, full of glorious peaks and curious valleys. A comprehensive trail through Reed's work is blazed by this worthwhile three-disc set. Reed took the urban poet-junkie ethic he perfected with the Velvet Underground and put it through as many artistic filters as he could think of throughout the '70s: glam rock, art-rock (Steve Howeand Rick Wakeman played on his first album!), avant-garde noise and of course, Velvets-style proto-punk. All these phases of his career are covered on BETWEEN THOUGHT AND EXPRESSION, in chronological fashion. Smartypants types who already own all the albums will be pulled in by the treasure trove of previously unreleased material. SKU: 1002228

Tomorrow Today (Limited International Edition)
Personnel includes: Al Jarreau, Vanessa Williams (vocals); Paul Jackson Jr., Tony Maiden, Ross Bolton, Mike Landau (guitar); Jerry Hey (strings, horns, keyboards, Moog synthesizer); Larry Williams (strings, horns, keyboards, programming); Tim Heintz (strings, keyboards); Tollak Ollestad (harmonica); Boney James (saxophone, EWI); Rick Braun (trumpet); Phil Davis, Dan Shea (keyboards, programming); John Stoddart (keyboards, background vocals); Greg Mathieson, Freddie Ravel (keyboards); Alex Al, Chris Walker, Jimmy Johnson (bass); Steve Gadd (drums); Paulinho Da Costa, Luis Conte (percussion); David "Kahlid" Woods (programming, background vocals); Paul Brown (programming); Bill Champlin, Donna Taylor (background vocals). Engineers include: Paul Brown, Dave Rideau, Bill Schnee. A certain timelessness surrounds Jarreau and his silken, seductive voice. He croons upon smooth jazz landscapes, territory blazed before him and after him by multitudes, but his voice always belongs to the music. Songs never seem quite as trite asthey could be when graced by his tender touch. On TOMORROW TODAY, the esteemed Mr. Jarreau wraps his vocals around 11 new tunes-some peppy, others sweet and slow-with the usual alluring results. The solo ballads provide the album's most stunning moments, as Jarreau's voice glides through such beautiful jazz-pop torchers as "Just to Be Loved" and "Let Me Love You." He tackles the issues facing the youth of America with verve on the title track. Vanessa Williams drops in to lend her talents to the pop nugget "God's Gift to the World." True tribute to the subtle joy in Jarreau's voice lies in the final track, an ultra-cute a cappella children's song entitled "Puddit (Put it Where You Want it)," a jaunt both fun and impressive. Jarreau fits into whatever world one wishes to put him. His sweet voice will never go out of style. SKU: 1057589

Dreamland
Personnel: Madeleine Peyroux (vocals, guitar); Marc Ribot (acoustic & electric guitars, dobro, banjo); Vernon Reid, Larry Saltzman (electric guitar); Regina Carter (violin); Charlie Giordano (accordion, Hammond B-3 organ, harmonium, harpsichord, Mellotron); James Carter (tenor saxophone, bass clarinet); Marcus Printup (trumpet); Cyrus Chestnut (piano); Steve Kirby (bass); Greg Cohen (bass, bass marimba); Leon Parker (drums, cymbal); Kenny Wollison (drums, cymbals, bass drum, percussion). Recorded at RPM Studios and Unique Studios, New York, New York. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Singer-songwriter Madeleine Peyroux's soulful voice is occupied so palpably by the spirit of Billie Holiday that it's almost scary. Peyroux is certainly influenced by the song and voice of Bessie Smith as well, but she approaches the material on her major-label debut from an entirely modern perspective, with strength and individuality as well as a hint of playfulness, like a stylish young woman looking great in a vintage dress. Peyroux covers such classics as "Walkin' After Midnight," Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose," and Smith's "Reckless Blues" with style and agility, backed by such well-known and expert musicians as jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut and guitarist Marc Ribot. DREAMLAND is buoyed as well by Peyroux's accomplished original songs, the bluesy vocal-Dobro tunes "Hey Sweet Man" and "Always a Use," and the album's dynamic, hopeful title track, DREAMLAND'S most contemporary and upbeat song. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Neutral Milk Hotel: Jeff Mangum ( vocals, guitar, organ, bass, drums, tapes, shortwave radio); Julian Koster (banjo, accordian, saw); Scott Spillane (trumpet, flugelhorn, trombone, euphonium); Jeremy Barnes (organ, drums). Additional personnel: Michelle Anderson (Uilleann pipes); Marisa Bissinger (saxophone, flugelhorn); Rick Benejamin (trombone); Laura Carter (zanzithophone); Robert Schneider (piano, organ, bass, background vocals). Neutral Milk Hotel leader Jeff Mangum is a popster who hears interstellar sounds as natural ingredients of his "pop." He was weaned with the inevitable four-track in his bedroom, schooled on a record collection stacked with John Cage and Captain Beefheart as well as the Beatles and the Kinks. There is an instant emotional intensity to Neutral Milk's music, and the seeds that were sewn on '96's lo-fi masterpiece ON AVERY ISLAND, bear an evolving fruit on IN THE AEROPLANE OVER THE SEA. Mangum's psych-folk songwriter musings dominate the album's landscape. Confusion streams out in hallucinatory phrases, trying to outrace a manic acoustic guitar, which in turn propels a band whose general sound is a four-track, punked-up version of Tom Waits' RAIN DOGS outfit. Brass-heavy instrumentals akin to ambient, bayou funeral dirges skitter by. At times, sunnypop emerges from the busy squall , as on the title track. Occasionally, the squall itself latches onto a melody, exploding with Flaming Lips-like ferocity. All of it suggests that while Neutral Milk's grasp on inherent truths (musical and otherwise) is wholly unstable, its quest for them is a wonder to behold. SKU: 1051796

Down In Birdland
ANTHOLOGY: DOWN IN BIRDLAND chronicles the Manhattan Transfer's stunning career with Atlantic, 1975-1988. From the time they first met on October 1, 1972 the group felt a strong unity through their love for 4-part vocals. Originality, combined with their tireless attention to detail, earned the Manhattan Transfer 8 group Grammys and a following as large as their harmonies are rich. Manhattan Transfer: Tim Hauser, Alan Paul, Janis Siegal, Laurel Masse, Cheryl Bentyne (vocals). 50 Cent Is The Future
One of G-Unit's original mix tapes recorded before the breakthrough of lead rapper 50 Cent. Released to coincide with the solo album releases of the G-Unit members the album is much rawer and demo like than 2003's 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin' (50 Cent's breakthrough album). The album isa document of the band's origins and displays how they developed their aggressive rap sound over their formative years. SKU: 6574104
