Modern Dance, The
Pere Ubu: Tom Herman, Scott Krauss, Tony Maimone, Allen Ravenstine, David Thomas (vocals, various instruments). It is hard to believe that such noises could come from so deep in America's heartland, played by a group named after a French absurdist play. The debut album by PereUbu, The Modern Dance is the realization of group leader David Thomas's (a.k.a. Crocus Behemoth) high-concept vision of a rock band whose sound was always just on the verge of falling apart. Avant garde and not terribly accessible, the album's noisy anarchy was a tonic for punks and intellectuals sick of the bloated, corporate sound that passed for commercial rock at the time. It became a major influence on the leading alternative bands of the following decade, including the Pixies and Husker Du. SKU: 5074758

Passage In Time, A
Dead Can Dance: Lisa Gerrard, Brendan Perry. Backin the early '90s, music released by the English record label 4AD was reasonably difficult to come by (not to mention expensive) in the U.S. The compilation A PASSAGE IN TIME became Dead Can Dance's first U.S. release. Though tracks from most of the band's albums are represented (only those from its 1984 self-titled debut are omitted), the bulk of the tracks appearing here were originally on THE SERPENT'S EGG (1988) and AION (1990). It also features two tracks that were recorded specially for this collection, "Bird" and "Spirit," both of which subsequently turned up on the vinyl version of the band's next studio album, 1993s INTO THE LABYRINTH. Among this collection's standouts are "Saltarello," which was adapted from a 14th-century piece of Italian dance music and played on bagpipes, drums, and tambourine; "The Host of Seraphim," with hyper-sustained organ notes under a spectacularly echoed vocal by Lisa Gerrard; and "Enigma of the Absolute," featuring one of the best examples of Brendan Perry's genuinely affecting vocals along with a tempered, pulsing percussive line. A PASSAGE IN TIME is an excellent place to examine Dead Can Dance, though it really only scratches the surface of this band's fascinating cannon. SKU: 1007698

Second Winter (Legacy Edition/Remastered) [Digipak]
Also available in a 3-packwith JOHNNY WINTER and CAPTURED LIVE. Johnny Winter's second album for Columbia--duh--1970's SECOND WINTER is also notorious for a gimmicky sales device. When the recording sessions were over, Winter had enough material for an album and a half; rather than add a side of filler, Columbia simply promoted the album as the world's first three-sided album. (In a snarky review, Rolling Stone sarcastically gave the blank fourth side an in-depth discussion.) The last of Winter's albums to feature his original backing band--drummer Uncle John Turner, bassist Tommy Shannon, and brother Edgar on keyboards and saxes--SECOND WINTER is a refinement of the blues-rock aesthetic of 1969's JOHNNY WINTER. Louder, harder, faster, and more reckless, this is to JOHNNY WINTER as Elvis Costello's THIS YEAR'S MODEL is to MY AIM IS TRUE: an album so phenomenal that it makes the debut, excellent though it is, sound weak in comparison. Highlights include the punky "I Hate Everybody" and a brilliant Hendrix-style deconstruction of Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited." SKU: 6575033

Changes
The Monkees: Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Steven Soles, Ned Albright, Bobby Bloom, Jeff Barry (various instruments, background vocals); Hugh McCracken (guitar); RonFrangipane (keyboards); Chuck Rainey (bass); Gary Chester, Buddy Saltzman (drums). Producers: Jeff Barry, Micky Dolenz, Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart, Bill Chadwick, Davy Jones. Reissue producers: Andrew Sandoval, Bill Inglot. Engineers: Mike Moran, Ray Hall. Recorded in New York and Hollywood, California between 1969 and 1971. Tracks 1-12 originally released on Colgems (119). Includes liner notes by Andrew Sandoval. By 1970's CHANGES, of the original four Monkees only Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones were left. Their participation here is limited to vocals and one Dolenz songwriting credit for "Midnight Train," a song which had actually appeared during the TV show's first season back in 1966. While CHANGES doesn't compare to classic Monkees albums like PISCES AQUARIUS CAPRICORN AND JONES, LTD., Dolenz's voice is more R&B-influenced than ever, and his lead vocal on Jeff Barry's "Oh My My" is among his best. Jones' contributions are in a pleasant bubblegum style, avoiding the histrionics of some of his earlier efforts. "All Alone in the Dark" is a particular highlight. On its own merits, CHANGES is fine early '70s bubblegum. SKU: 1009319

Oh Yeah (Ultimate Aerosmith Hits)
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CDplayers. Aerosmith: Steve Tyler (vocals, harmonica, piano, keyboards, percussion); Joe Perry (guitar, background vocals); Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums, percussion). "Girls Of Summer" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Pulling out all the stops to commemorate their 30th anniversary since signing to Columbia Records, Aerosmith drops the two-CD O, YEAH! ULTIMATE AEROSMITH HITS set on the public. Despite the existence of various previously released anthologies including BIG ONES, GREATEST HITS, and GEMS, O, YEAH! is the first collection to compile material from the band's Columbia and Geffen Records catalogs. The comprehensive track listing not only includes 'Smith perennials like "Dream On," "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion," but deeper and oft-overlooked cuts like "Seasons Of Wither" and their swinging cover of the Bull Moose Jackson '50s R&B nugget "Big Ten Inch Record." Members of the MTV generation also get their fill of post-comeback hits from PERMANENT VACATION, PUMP, and GET A GRIP including "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)," "What It Takes," "Cryin'," and "Amazing." All four of the band's Grammy-winning singles are included--"Janie's Got A Gun," "Livin' On The Edge," "Crazy," and the "South Beach Mix" of "Pink," along with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry's historic team-up with Run-DMC on a cover of "Walk This Way." Two new cuts, the Beatlesque "Girls Of Summer" and the equally catchy "Lay It Down" round out this impressive set. SKU: 1073685

Marcy Playground
Personnel: John Wozniak (vocals, guitar); Jen Handler (cello); Jared Kotler (bass, drums); Glen Braver, Edgar Mills, Dylan Keefe (bass); Dan Rieser (drums). Recorded at Sabella Recording Studios, Roslyn, New York. Like Everclear's Art Alexakis, Marcy Playground singer/songwriter/mastermind John Wozniak is clearly indebted to the musical legacy of Kurt Cobain. The best of Wozniak's songs, the standouts on Marcy Playground's self-titled debut, not only evoke Nirvana's sound--heavenly, minor-key melodies, transformed into thorny alterna-pop by a stripped-down, punky three-piece--but Kurt's metaphor-minded, playful yet emotionally intense viewpoint. And where Alexakis sticks to "real life" narratives that peg him a traditional singer/songwriter high on grunge, Wozniak brandishes history lessons ("Poppies"), descents into druggy deliriums ("Ancient Walls of Flowers"), and re-dreams a dreadful pre-adolescence ("Saint Joe on the School Bus") in order to paint a much wider portrait. More often than not, the sinful deviance of the subculture that isWozniak's natural habitat rises out of his catchy, radio-friendly tunes--"Sex & Candy" being a prime example--making for the kind of slightly dangerous pop rush that is rarely offered in alterna-land. Recorded at Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California, in March 1961. Elvis' theatrical ouevre found him portraying singing busboys, singing prizefighters, even a singing doctor in love with a nun, all of which makes his role as the heir to a pineapple fortune in "Blue Hawaii" sound positively prosaic. But Elvis and Hawaii were made for each other like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and "Blue Hawaii" became one of his most successful movies. The soundtrack was the No. 1 record in the U.S. for an astonishing 20 weeks, making it Elvis' most commercially successful LP, and one of the most successful LPs of all time. Like most of Elvis' soundtracks, the album contains some real gems surrounded by some real dross. This 1997 reissue is remastered and remixed from the original master tapes, and includes several extra tracks. Amid such frivolitiesas "Rock-A-Hula Baby" (co-written by Ed Wood's girlfriend Dolores Fuller) are classic tracks like "Can't Help Falling In Love." The reissue adds the actual on-screen version of this prime Elvis ballad. SKU: 1016968

Eat At Whitey's [PA]
Personnel includes: Everlast (vocals, guitar); N'Dea Davenport, Cee-Lo, Merry Clayton (vocals); Carlos Santana (guitar); Miles Tackett (cello); Keefus Ciancia, Victor Rice (bass); B-Real, Rahzel, Kurupt, John Bigham, Larry Ciancia, Patrick Freitas, Chris Thomas. Producers: The Stimulated Dummies, John Gamble, Dante Ross, Everlast. Recorded at SD Studios, New York, New York. For the follow-up to his breakthrough solo album WHITEY FORD SINGS THE BLUES, the former House Of Pain member continues solidifying the bridge between the worlds of rock and rap. This time out, Everlast revisits his hip-hop roots with a vengeance by loading up this 13-track opus up with plenty of jeep-worthy beats and matter-of-fact, lyrical flow. Setting the pace early on is the minute-and-a-half opening track "Whitey," which finds the gruff-sounding Irishman reasserting his lyrical prowess over a zig-zagging cello. Menacing strings make an appearance on dark inner city tales like "Deadly Assassins" (featuring Cypress Hill's B-Real) and "Graves to Dig," a slow-rolling eulogy to all those cut down by gunfire in their prime. Everlast is at his best spewing out narratives, as on the ultra-funky "Children's Story," a duet with The Roots' Rahzel which tells of the tragic meeting between a strapped teen and an undercover cop. Not everything in this sumptuousbanquet of beats is so grim, however; the tattooed rapper shows his soft side by featuring former Brand New Heavies vocalist N'Dea Davenport on the introspective funk of "One and the Same" and the romantic lament "Love For Real." Morrison Hotel
The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals); Robby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (keyboards); John Densmore (drums). Additional personnel: G. Puglese (harmonica); Ray Neopolitan, Lonnie Mack (bass). Feted first as underground heroes, then reviled as teeny-bop stars, the Doors threw off such conundrums with this magnificent release. MORRISON HOTEL reaffirmed their blues roots, opening with the powerful'Roadhouse Blues' before unfolding through a succession of songs showcasing all the group members' considerable strengths. Distinctively tight instrumental playing underscores memorable material, while Jim Morrison's authoritative vocal ranges from the demonstrative ('Maggie McGill') to the melancholic ('The Spy'). Despite contemporary problems, the Doors emerged with an album the equal of their first two stunning releases. SKU: 1005755

Kindred Spirits (A Tribute To The Songs Of Johnny Cash)
"Flesh And Blood" (Mary Chapin Carpenter, Sheryl Crow & Emmylou Harris) was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. Kicking off with Dwight Yoakam performing Johnny Cash's own homage to Bob Dylan, "Understand Your Man," which is an obvious ringer for "Don't Think Twice It's Alright," this all-star tribute to the Man in Black is a smoothly professional salute to the Man In Black. Dylan's spoken introduction to "Train of Love" is almost worth the price of admission by itself, and the live, rough track is a delight. There's also Keb Mo' dragging "Folsom Prison" back to its Delta roots, and Sheryl Crow playing the accordion on Mary Chapin Carpenter and Emmylou Harris's gorgeous version of "Flesh and Blood." The gravel-voiced Steve Earle performs a creditable version of the more obscure "Hardin Wouldn't Run," but pride of place must surely go to A.P. and Sara Carter's daughter Janette Carter's poignant "Meet Me in Heaven," on which she's accompanied by Johnny and his wife June Carter Cash. The fragile vocals underline the sad fact that even country legends don't stay around forever, which makes this excellenttribute to a living legend all the more welcome. SKU: 1076994

Destroyer [Remastered]
Kiss: Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums). Recorded at The Record Plant, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Robert V. Conte. Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio at SterlingSound, New York, New York. Before DESTROYER, Kiss' studio albums were only moderate sellers. But the band's concerts were selling out regularly, and 1975's ALIVE! album had gone gold, putting Kiss on the pop map. DESTROYER, on which they teamed with Alice Cooper producer Bob Ezrin, was the breakthrough that finally got Kiss' grandiose rock ideas down on record. DESTROYER is a chancy, ambitious album. It opens with a radio announcer reporting a teen's death in a car crash, followed by a snippet of "Rock And Roll All Nite" (which had appeared on 1975's DRESSED TO KILL); then the band launches into "Detroit Rock City," an homage to the first city to make them stars. "Great Expectations" features ornate orchestration, a heavenly chorus and a guitar tone that exposes the band's glam-rock ambitions. DESTROYER also includes a ready-made rock anthems ("Shout It Out Loud"), a swipe at manipulative groupies ("Do You Love Me," which is punched up with tubular bells) and a foreboding song about "the lord of the wasteland" that became Gene Simmons' signature tune ("God Of Thunder"). And then there is "Beth," an uncharacteristic ballad, sung and co-written by drummer Peter Criss. The lush strings and delicate piano gave Kiss a Top-10 hit and a greater fan base. Soon would come a TV Movie ("Kiss Meets The Phantom Of The Park") and a comic book. SKU: 1002534

Platinum - A Life In Music
This 4-CD box set contains a 48-page book and consists mostly of previously-unreleased alternate takes of Presley's hits. Personnel includes: Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana, Chet Atkins, Floyd Kramer, Shorty Long, Marvin Hughes, Hilmer "Tiny" Timbrell, Dudley Brooks, Bob Moore, Hank Garland, Buddy Harman, Boots Randolph, Ray Siegel, Al Casey,Hal Blaine, Jerry Reed, Charlie Hodge, Tommy Tedesco, Reggie Young, Bobby Emmons, Mike Leech, James Burton, John Wilkinson, Jerry Carrigan, Glen Spreen, Emory Gordy, Tommy Hensley, Johnny Christopher, Bobby Ogdin, The Bobby Morris Orchestra, The Joe Guercio Orchestra, Ben & Brock Speer, The Jordanaires, The Imperials Quartet, June Page, Dolores Edgin, The Blossoms, The Sweet Inspirations, Ginger Holladay, Temple Riser, Kathy Westmoreland, J.D. Summer and The Stamps, Myrna Smith. Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Engineers include: Sam Phillips, Thorne Nogar, Bill Porter. Recorded between 1954 and 1970. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. You probably think you've heard all there is to hear from The King, what with countless Elvis retrospectives, anthologies and reissues flooding the market. While PLATINUM is far from the first Elvis box, it's unique in that it's composed largely of previously unreleased material. Four discs cover every phase of Presley's career, from young Memphis hip-shaker to middle-aged Vegas hip-shaker, adding a fresh perspective to each period. It's both an education and a kick to hear alternate versions of songs as ingrained in the public consciousness as "That's All Right," and others from Elvis' legendary Sun sessions. Obscure delights like 1969's "Power Of My Love" update one of rock & roll's most stellar legacies. Off-the-cuff recordings and live TV performances contribute further to this set, which proves that even the most zealous Elvis fan hasn't heard the whole story yet. SKU: 1001773

Premonition (John Fogerty Live)
PREMONITION was recorded live on a Warner Brothers soundstage in Burbank, California in 1997. Personnel : John Fogerty (vocals, guitar); Johnny Lee Schell (guitar, background vocals); Mike Canipe (guitar); Bob Glaub (bass); Kenny Aronoff (drums); Maxine Waters, Julia Waters, Oren Waters (background vocals). PREMONITION was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Almost Saturday Night" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. One of the most pleasant surprises of 1997 was the return of John Fogerty. After releasing the eventual Grammy-winning BLUE MOON SWAMP, his first recording in over a decade, the subsequent tour found the CCR founder sounding timeless and having a great time to boot. All this and more are found on PREMONITION, a live album from the tour that ably demonstrates howFogerty still has a freshness to his playing not found in players half his age despite being away for so long. To the delight of many fans, Fogerty broke out a batch of Creedence material after disavowing it due to legal wranglings that stretched out over years. To his credit, Fogerty bypassed the usual greatest hits approach, choosing instead to mix in a number of earlier solo numbers ("Centerfield," "Rockin' All Over The World") with material from his latest record ("Swamp River Days," "Hot Rod Heart"). Most poignant was the unabashed affection showed to his wife as he introduced "Joy Of My Life," a number not only overflowing with spousal love, but a confidence belonging to someone who's finally back in the creative saddle and raring to go. Greatest Hits Collection
THE GREATEST HITS COLLECTION contains 3 new songs. Brooks & Dunn: Kix Brooks, Ronnie Dunn (vocals) Additional personnel: Mark Casstevens (acoustic guitar, mandolin); Steve Gibson (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Bruce C. Bouton (lap steel, steel, slide & pedal steel guitars); Rob Hajacos (fiddle); Dennis Burnside (piano, keyboards, Hammond B-3 organ); John Barlow Jarvis (piano, organ, keyboards); Glenn Worf, David Hungate, Mike Chapman, Michael Rhodes (bass); Lonnie Wilson (drums, percussion); Tom Roady (percussion); Scott Hendricks (cowbell); Dennis Wilson, John Wesley Ryles, Wes Hightower, Terry McBride, Liana Manis, Harry Stinson, Bill LaBounty, Arista Tabernacle Choir (background vocals). Producers: Don Cook, Kix Brooks, Ronnie Dunn, Scott Hendricks. Recorded at SoundShop Recording Studios and Tree Studio, Nashville, Tennesee. A greatest hits collection is almost a redundancy for this chart-topping contemporary country duo, since nearly everything they touch turns to gold (if not platinum). Nevertheless, this compilation condenses the band's catalog, including three brand new tracks, into 19 sparkling gems of country-pop, bound to please both longtime fans and curious first-timers. They're all here, from the band's stellar cover of the pop hit"My Maria" to beer-swiggin' jukebox faves like "Boot Scootin' Boogie" and "Honky Tonk Truth." What comes across most strongly on this album is the consistency of Brooks and Dunn's work, as it moves from house-rockin' uptempo numbers to sentimental ballads without losing a step. Every track features top-notch performances from great Nashville studio musicians, state-of-the-art production, and of course, the lilting harmonies of Brooks and Dunn. What more could a fan ask? Kitty Jay
Kitty Jay’ is a collection of songs written and inspired by the stories and legends of Seth’s birthplace and home of Dartmoor – it’s an ambitious disc that attempts to capture the spirit and atmosphere of the wilderness of the moor. Ambitious it may be but he’s certainlysucceeded. Over the 11 tracks he creates an impressively dark and brooding atmosphere, but this is contrasted by lighter and sweeter passages spread throughout – it’s a disc that feels natural and balanced.
