All-American Rejects, The
The All-American Rejects: Tyson Ritter (vocals, bass); Nick Wheeler (guitar, keyboards, drums, programming). Recorded at Mission Sound and Headgear Studio, Brooklyn, New York. Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler, the two college-age clean-cut men who form the nexus of the All-American Rejects, have a knack for driving home a pop hook. Clearly weaned on power pop's history from the Beach Boys and Big Star to the Cars and Weezer and other more modern proponents, the Oklahoma outfit serves up gentle pop radiance with a hint of Replacements-style brashness on its self-titled debut. The All-American Rejects' songs capture a youthful simplicity without slipping into juvenile lyrics like many bands with a similar sound. There is an endearing innocence in tunes like "My Paper Heart" with its simple opening entreaty "please just don't play with me/my paperheart will bleed" over insistent acoustic guitar before a quiet storm replete with a tympani-sounding instrument. Ornate instrumentation abounds, but it augments the music, never seeming forced or out or place, likely a combination of prescience on the pair's part and the experienced hand of producer-engineer Tim O'Heir (Sebadoh, Superdrag, Possum Dixon). In fact, the album's hallmark is a bewitching, summery, infectious pop consistency. SKU: 6518356

Experience Hendrix
THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE [BOX] consists principally of previously unreleased alternate takes & mixes, studio demos and live tracks, and comes with an 80-page booklet. Personnel includes: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar, harpsichord, bass); Larry Lee (guitar); Paul Caruso (harmonica); Larry Young (organ); Billy Cox, Noel Redding (bass, background vocals); Buddy Miles, Mitch Mitchell (drums, percussion, background vocals); Juma Sulton, Jerry Velez (percussion); Graham Nash, Andy Fairweather Low, Steve Winwood, Chris Wood, Arthur & Albert Allen, Chas Chandler, Gary Walker, The Ronettes, Roger Chapman (background vocals). Producers: Jimi Hendrix, Rune Hallberg, Chas Chandler, Lou Adler. Compilation producers: Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, John McDermott. Engineers include: Eddie Kramer, RTE, Gary Kellgren. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh & John McDermott. Digitally remastered by Eddie Kramer & George Marino (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). The Jimi Hendrix catalogue has been diced and sliced so many ways over the years that only the most cynical record executives couldpossibly envision another box set of the same old material. Thankfully, this four-disc box entirely avoids the pre-existing body of work that's been presented to Hendrix fans innumerable times in the past. Instead, JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE consists exclusively of previously unreleased material, alternate takes, demos, live tracks, and the like. Every moment of it is designed to illuminate a different side of the many-faceted artist, and will undoubtedly make any hardcore Hendrixite's mouth water. It's obviously a kick to hear the alternate takes of classic tracks such as "Foxey Lady" and "Purple Haze," which bear a slightly rawer edge than the versions we're used to. But the real joy of this box comes in the more unexpected selections, particularly the live cuts. We get a look at Hendrix's blues roots, in turbo-charged takes on Muddy Waters ("Catfish Blues") and Howlin' Wolf ("Killing Floor"), but we also learn about where the guitarist's head was at during his late-'60s heyday in covers of the Beatles ("Sgt. Pepper") and Dylan ("Like a Rolling Stone"). Ranging from Hendrix's rootsiest endeavors to his most free-form explorations, this box set offers an alternative-yet-comprehensive view of this complex performer. SKU: 1042368

Nancy Sinatra
Personnel include: Nancy Sinatra (vocals); Jon Spencer (vocals, guitar, percussion); Morrissey, Bono (vocals); Peter Yorn (harmonica, bass guitar, drums); Thurston Moore (bass guitar). Recording information: Brooklyn Recording, Brooklyn, New York; Elektra Studios, Los Angeles, CA; The Think Tank, Hoboken, NJ; Sonora Recorders, Los Angeles, California. Nancy Sinatra's eponymous 2004 release mixes the old and the new in intriguing, refreshing ways. Sinatra's alto, which pours over melodies like a dry martini, is still intact, though time has replaced some of her cheekiness with sincerity. The "new" arrives in the form of contemporary songwriters and performers, some of whom were still in diaperswhen Sinatra had her '60s hits. These include indie upstarts Calexico, electronica act Reno, and former Pussy Galore member Jon Spencer, who lends deep-down vocals to the funky rocker "Ain't No Easy Way." Sinatra's wide range of collaborators is as impressive as the quality of the material. Pulp's Jarvis Cocker contributes the lush pop ballad "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time" and the country-flavored "Baby's Coming Back to Me." U2's "Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad" (originally written for her father Frank) is particularly well suited to Sinatra, as is Pete Yorn's bright, ironic "Don't Mean Nothing." Overall, the singer translates impressively to a contemporary "alternative" context, making NANCY SINATRA a comeback album to bridge styles, tastes, and generations. SKU: 6569921

Diva
Personnel: Annie Lennox (vocals, keyboards); Stephen Lipson (guitar, keyboards, programming); Kenji Jammer (guitar); Gavin Wright (violin); Peter-John Vettese (recorder, keyboards, programming); Dave Defries (trumpet); Ed Shearmur (piano); Marius De Vries (keyboards, programming); Paul Moore (keyboards); Doug Wimbish (bass); Keith LeBlanc (drums); Louis Jardim (percussion); Steve Jansen (programming). Principally recorded at Mayfair Studios, London, England. Direct from the popular synth-pop band the Eurythmics, Annie Lennox spreads her artistic wings on DIVA. An impressive solo debut, DIVA runs the gamut from rock epic to confessional ballad. Depending on the song's sentiment, Lennox can be commanding or gentle, icy or tender. Always in control of the intricate dynamics, she is a diva who knows how to work through the subtleties of a lyric while soaring through demanding vocals. "Why" is a soul-bearing narrative, building and bursting with passion and regret. Other highlights include the staccato string-driven "Walking On Broken Glass," the foot-tapping "Little Bird" and the languid, bluesy "Cold." There's a humorous CD bonus track, the straight-outta-the-'30s "Keep Young And Beautiful" ("...if you want to be loved..."). Lennox's lyrics are sharp and insightful, and bode well for a substantial solo career. Even a potentially over-the-top ode like "Precious" works because of her credible delivery and Whitney-worthy vocals. Lennox definitely moves up to the rank of DIVA, without the vainvocal histrionics that often accompany that title. SKU: 1004930

Station To Station [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, alto & tenor saxophones, Moog synthesizer, Mellotron); Warren Peace (vocals); Carlos Alomar, Earl Slick (guitar); Roy Bittan (piano); George Murray(bass); Dennis Davis (drums). Principally recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood, California. Originally released on RCA. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew & Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). STATION TO STATION was the soundtrack to Bowie's nightlife. This time around he fashioned himself as the king of slick, the "Thin White Duke/Throwing darts in lover's eyes." This new persona enabled Bowie to show his sensual side and his affection for American soul music--something that would have seemed out of context on previous efforts. The album's smooth vibe is evident in the funky guitar of "Golden Years," and mixed with a dangerous charm and the "side effects of the cocaine" on the title track. Bowie had miraculously done it again--he picked up a new musical identity, and molded it to perfection. STATION TO STATION was a refining period for Bowie. Gone was his other-worldly sexuality; The Thin White Duke was right here on Earth, no alien veneer, just a man completely run by his desires. It is then purely appropriate that the medium through which he expressed this lustful angle would be soul music. Carlos Alomar's biting guitar on "Golden Years" is straight out of the James Brown catalog, while the frantic drums and background vocals of "Stay" are pure strobe light disco. SKU: 1025345

Unlimited Edition
Can: Damo Suzuki, Malcolm Mooney (vocals); Michael Karoli (guitar, shenai); Jaki Liebezeit (winds, drums, percussion); Irmin Schmidt (keyboards, synthesizer); Holger Czukay (bass). Recorded at CanStudio, Weilerswist, Germany between September 1968 and July 1975. Released in 1976 as a double-album expansion of 1974's LIMITED EDITION, UNLIMITED EDITION collects previously unreleased recordings made by Can between 1968 and 1974. Because the group owned their own rehearsal space/studio, Inner Space, they could record pretty much at whim, not only when release schedules dictated. While in some hands, this lack of structure would be an open invitation for endless, boring jams, the members of Can are far too self-disciplined for that. While a distinct looseness permeates these songs, none of them are unstructured or repetitive enough to truly be called jams. Instead, they're explorations, like the improvisations of a talented, intuitive jazz combo. While many of the 19 tracks--including several entries in their ongoing Ethnological Forgeries series--are instrumentals, former singers Malcolm Mooney and Damo Suzuki are both represented here. Middle Of Nowhere, The
Orbital: Paul Hartnoll, Phil Hartnoll. Additional personnel: Barbara Cohen, Alison Goldfrapp (vocals); Lem (guitar); Simon Poole, Phil Holmberg (trumpet); Andy James (bass); Steve Sidelnyk (drums, percussion). Engineers include: Dave Pemberton. THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE is an instant electro classic, courtesyof Orbital's Paul and Phil Hartnoll. This is techno for the armchair and the out-there raver, music that combines the sublime vocals of Alison Goldfrapp with thumping breakbeats and old-school techno bleeps and keyboard sounds. Ever since the success of "Chime" in 1990, Orbital have remained the undisputed kings of "intelligent dance" and, five albums later, MIDDLE OF NOWHERE proves that they haven't lost their touch. The album retains the repetitiveness inherent to much dance music, but around this Orbital deftly weave strong melodic lines that constantly develop and evolve, thus giving even the album's longest tracks a sense of shape and structure. MIDDLE OF NOWHERE also has a great sense of unity--the expansive "Way Out," featuring glorious vocal and trumpet solos, rolls seamlessly into the bleepy-bloopy sounds of "Spare Parts Express." "Know Where to Run" and "I Don't Know You People" are darker, more harshly techno-driven tracks, although the latter is also Orbital's first to feature live drums and guitars. Whether or not you are an electro-connoisseur, MIDDLE OF NOWHERE is accessible and endlessly enjoyable. SKU: 5020845

Song Of The Bailing Man
Pere Ubu: David Thomas (vocals); Mayo Thompson (guitar); Anton Fier (piano, marimba, drums, percussion); Allen Ravenstine (synthesizer); Tony Maimone (bass). Recorded in August and December 1981, and January 1982. The most restrained album of Pere Ubu's career, 1982's SONG OF THE BAILING MAN was the group's last before a five-year hiatus. Newest Ubu member Mayo Thompson (vocals, guitar), who had joined prior to 1981's THE ART OF WALKING, is almost entirely in control here, and the results sound more than a little like the whimsical art-rock of Thompson's once-and-future home, Red Krayola. Although group leader David Thomas still sings the majority of the songs, even he seems to have retooled his unique vocal style to conform with the mood set by Thompson's skittering, playful guitar lines and Tony Maimone's springy, melodic bass. SONG OFTHE BAILING MAN is considerably less dark and more song-oriented than the albums which preceded it, but it also lacks the pop tendencies of the albums made after the group's 1987 reformation. Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). After years spent enhancing the work of others as guitarist, songwriter, and producer, Rodney Crowell finally made his commercial breakthrough as a solo artist with his fifth album DIAMONDS & DIRT. Conclusive proof that Crowell had truly arrived was the record he set by earning five consecutive number one singles from the album. Crowell takes a less pop-oriented approach than his then-spouse Rosanne Cash (who appears as her husband's duet partner on"It's Such a Small World"), favoring instead a modernized honky-tonk approach that prefigured the ascendancy of such progressive country artists as Lyle Lovett and Dwight Yoakam. From the breakneck energy of the opener, "Crazy Baby," to the lovelorn, piano-based ballad, "I Didn't Know I Could Lose You," Crowell consistently proves himself as a powerful songwriter and singer capable of creating modern country music without sacrificing his roots. Afterburner
ZZ Top: Billy Gibbons (vocals, guitar); Dusty Hill (vocals, bass); Frank Beard (drums). After scoring its biggest hit ever with its eighth release, 1983's polished ELIMINATOR, ZZ Top decided to continue in the same mainstream direction for its next release two years later, AFTERBURNER. Another big hit for the band, the album did spawn several hits, yet wasn'tas strong overall as its predecessor. It was impossible to avoid the following ZZ hits on either MTV or radio between 1985-'86--the ballad "Rough Boy" (which innovative video was based on AFTERBURNER's space-age cover art), the synth stomper "Velcro Fly," the melodic "Sleeping Bag," or the rocking "Stages." 15 years after the band's debut release, AFTERBURNER found ZZ Top more popular than ever. Amerikaz Nightmare (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Mobb Deep: Prodigy, Havoc. Mobb Deep: Havoc , Prodigy . Personnel: Jadakiss, Lil Jon, Littles , Nate Dogg, Noyd, Twista. Producers: Alchemist; Havoc; Lil Jon; Red Spyda; Kayne West. Since exploding in 1995 with the indisputable classic THE INFAMOUS, the Queens, New York-based duo Mobb Deep has had a profound influence onboth mainstream and underground hip-hop. AMERIKAZ NIGHTMARE proves that, once again, Havoc and Prodigy are several steps ahead of the game. The album opens with the claustrophobic, gun-toting title track, which finds producer Havoc in familiar territory, assaulting the senses with distorted, multi-layered synthesizers and crashing percussion. On track two, "Win or Lose," the Alchemist samples Jean Plum's "Here I Go Again" as Havoc and Prodigy discuss the finer points of hustling. Elsewhere, the single "Got It Twisted" makes clever use of a sample from Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me with Science." In typical hip-hop fashion, outside artists add their own special flavor to several tracks. Standouts include Nate Dogg's ridiculously catchy chorus on "Dump" and Lil Jon's mere presence on "Real Gangstaz." The record also features Kanye West, who contributes another superior track, the Organized Noize-infused "Throw Your Hands (In the Air)." AMERIKAZ NIGHTMARE is pure, unadulterated hip-hop, a lesson for aspiring rappers and a gift to fans of the genre. SKU: 6558984

Magic And Loss
Personnel: Lou Reed (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Mike Rathke (guitar); Rob Wasserman (bass); Michael Blair (drums, percussion, background vocals); Roger Moutenot, Little Jimmy Scott (background vocals). Recorded at The Magic Shop, New York, New York on April 1-27, 1991. In the wake of Reed's artistic and commercial comeback NEW YORK, fans were eager to see where Uncle Lou would journey next. As it turns out, he traveled deep into the valley of death. Essentially a concept album about mortality, MAGIC AND LOSS was inspired by the passing of two of Reed's friends, the unspecified "Rita" and legendary songwriter Doc Pomus, who lost a long battle with cancer. Most of the NEW YORK band returns here, and sonicallyit's a similarly stripped-down affair, essentially a Velvets-ish two guitars-bass-and-drums approach. Reed examines every aspect of death, from hospital sickbed to funeral, cremation and beyond, with his usual lyrical precision and (with a few notable exceptions) a more low-key dynamic than on his previous album. Metamorphosis (Early Demos) [SACD] [Remastered]
This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both Super Audio and regular CD players. METAMORPHOSIS is a collection of outtakes from 1975 and has never been available on CD. The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones, Mick Taylor (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Culled from the Rolling Stones' massive archive, 1975's METAMORPHOSIS is the band's sole rarities compilation featuring material from the Stones' fertile '60s and '70s era. Cherry picked by former manager Allen Klein as a result of a bitter lawsuit that found a similar anthology contrived by Bill Wyman going unreleased, this treasuretrove of cuts is a boon to both die-hard and casual Stones fans. It kicks off with a lush, orchestrated version of "Out Of Time," one of a handful of outtakes (along with "Heart Of Stone") featuring a studio full of session musicians including John McLaughlin, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones. Overseen by Mick Jagger and then manager Andrew Oldham, these tracks provide interesting insight to a time when the Stones' success allowed them to dish off songs to other UK artists, using versions like these as demos. Other highlights include a killer cover of Stevie Wonder's "I Don't Know Why" (originally recorded for LET IT BLEED) and "Memo From Turner," a Jagger/Richards number cut with Al Kooper and penned for the soundtrack to the Jagger vehicle Performance. Making its CD debut in 2002, METAMORPHOSIS remains a jewel that still glimmers almost three decades after its release. SKU: 1076787
