Out Of Our Heads (UK Version) [SACD] [Remastered]
This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both Super Audio and regular CD players. The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, harmonica); Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica, piano, organ); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Ian Stewart (piano, organ, marimba); Jack Nitzsche (piano, organ, percussion). Engineers: David Hassinger, Ron Malo, Glyn Johns. Recorded in Hollywood, California, Chicago, Illinois & London, England. Includes liner notes by Andrew Loog Oldham. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Early Stones recordings don't get much better than this. Firmly established ascelebrities, the band began to use the pandemonium they inspired as an artistic source. Nowhere is their initial reaction to fame and music business drama more apparent than in the humorous, mocking "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man," in which the Stones effectively skewer the sleazier side of the record industry. Naturally, this will always be known as the album that features the original version of "Satisfaction," which would remain the band's signature tune throughout their career, but that's really just the tip of the iceberg. Equally effective as a Jagger-Richards distillation of rock and R&B is "The Last Time," a tune easily the equal of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now," which the Stones handily covered on 12 X 5. Standing out from the crowd is the harpsichord-driven, English folk-inspired "Play With Fire," a menacing minor key song full of subtly expressed psychological violence. This tune, a marked change of pace for the band, hinted at the stylistic variety they would later explore. SKU: 1076823

Eee-o 11 (The Best Of The Rat Pack)
Full performer name: Frank Sinatra/Dean Martin/Sammy Davis, Jr. Compilation producers: Cheryl Pawelski, Frank Collura. Includes Rat Pack quotes compiled by Bill Zehme. Digitally remastered by Bob Norberg (Capitol Mastering). Despite the fact that all the participants are dead and there's no single or video, EEO-ELEVEN: THE BEST OF THE RAT PACK still managed to make it onto the Billboard album charts. Though the Sinatra fanbase was still wide enough circa 2002, it was the success of the OCEAN'S ELEVEN remake (the original film was a cinematic rat pack tour de force) that pushed the Chairman and his pals to the forefront of the collective consciousness. While there are a couple of discs available of the Sinatra/Martin/Davis "rat pack" performingtogether, this is basically collection of some of the best-known recordings by the individual artists. While hardcore lounge-heads will already have most of this material, EEE-O ELEVEN provides an excellent entry point into the smoothly self-assured swing and pop of these larger-than-life American icons. Facelift
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley (vocals); Jerry Cantrell (guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums). Recorded at London Bridge Studios, Seattle, Washington and Capitol Recording Studios, Hollywood, California. Long before the phrase, "Seattle scene" spoke of an impact that a new generation of musicians was having on rock music, Alice in Chains was struggling to be recognized in the shadow of bands that were more focused on image than craft. On FACELIFT, the band's major label debut, Alice in Chains proved that its fusion of blues, hard rock, and gritty imagery was a force to be reckoned with. While college radio stations ate up fare like "It Ain't Like That" and "We Die Young,"the song "Man in a Box" became a banner track that pushed the band into the forefront of heavy rotation on MTV and the playlists of mainstream rock radio stations. Vocalist Layne Staley's moody, dynamic vocals on "Love, Hate, Love" tell a chilling tale of a homicidal psychotic lamenting and musing over what he's done to his lover. On tracks such as "Sea of Sorrow" and "I Can't Remember," guitarist Jerry Cantrell shows equally impressive skill in Sabbath-styled riffing, blues licks, and Hendrix-influenced solos. Alice in Chains made a brash musical and lyrical statement that gave the stale era of thrash and hair metal a much-needed facelift. SKU: 1003118

Victorialand [Remastered]
Cocteau Twins: Elizabeth Fraser (vocals); Robin Guthrie (guitar); Simon Raymonde (bass). Additional personnel: Richard Thomas (saxophone, tablas). In the two years following TREASURE, the Cocteau Twins released three EPs: AIKEA-GUINEA, TINY DYNAMINE, and ECHOES IN A SHALLOW BAY. Each of theserecords saw the band moving progressively further away from the heavier sound of previous releases. VICTORIALAND (1986) was the apex of this trend and easily their most ethereal, airy album. Interested listeners should also check out the band's 1986 THE MOON AND THE MELODIES, recorded with ambient musician Harold Budd. VICTORIALAND features very little in the way of percussion on most tracks, instead concentrating on the interplay between Elizabeth Fraser's vocals and Robin Guthrie's elaborate, but unassuming, guitar effects. This is most successful on "Oomingmak," where the ambient sounds backing the two smoothly ebb and flow, augmented by Simon Raymonde's intermittent bass notes. Other standouts include "Feet-like Fins," which whirls around Guthrie's gorgeously echoing guitar before adding bass and bongos in a swirling climax, and "The Thinner the Air," a haunting track that suggests a more archaic Dead Can Dance. VICTORIALAND and its predecessor, TREASURE, are consistently cited as the band's best records by their fans. SKU: 1079779

Personnelincludes: Rachelle Ferrell (vocals, piano); Claude Nobs (spoken vocals); George Duke (arranger, keyboards); Eddie Green (piano); Brian Simpson (keyboards); Jonathan Butler (guitar); Tyrone Brown (bass); Doug Nally (drums). Recorded live at The Montreux Jazz Festival, Montreux, Switzerland between July 15, 1991 and July 12, 1997. Includes liner notes by Bruce Lundvall and Rachelle Ferrell. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Ah, the LIVE AT MONTREUX album, the gold watch of jazz. It seems like once a musician or vocalist has spent a few decades in smoky clubs and roughneck juke joints, they get to fly to Switzerland and make a dignified (read: dull) recording in front of a respectful (read: bored) audience. It's a tradition. That singer Rachelle Ferrell made her LIVE AT MONTREUX album only three albums into her career is surprising. That it's her finest work yet is nothing short of amazing. On early albums like 1989's FIRST INSTRUMENT, Ferrell seemed hesitant to find her own voice, too often relying on familiar phrasing even on original songs. Perhaps this was just studio nerves, because on stage only two years later (nine of these 12 songs were recorded in 1991 with the Earl Green Trio, with the remainder coming from a 1997 date with a big band), Ferrell reinterprets a fine set of standards and works wonders on her original songs, particularly an excellent version of her signature tune, "I'm Special," with George Duke on keyboards. The three later tracks are even better, as they show the result of several years of vocal experimentation on Ferrell's part; her phrasing is remarkably free, but never as mannered as her contemporary Cassandra Wilson can be at times. Far from being a staid, boring run-through of tired material, Rachelle Ferrell's LIVE AT MONTREUX is a revelation. SKU: 1071696

Thing Fish
Personnel: Frank Zappa (guitar, Synclavier); Steve Vai, Ray White (guitar); Chuck Wild (piano); Tommy Mars (keyboards); Jay Anderson (acoustic bass); Arthur Barrow, Scott Thunes (bass); Chad Wackerman (drums); Ed Mann (percussion); Steve De Furia, David Ocker (programming). Cast of THING-FISH: Ike Willis (Thing Fish); Terry Bozzio (Harry); Dale Bozzio (Rhonda); NapoleonMurphy Brock (Evil Prince); Bob Harris (Harry-As-A-Boy); Johnny "Guitar" Watson (Brown Moses); Ray White (Owl-Gonkwin-Jane Cowhoon). Originally released as a 3 LP set. Like his masterpiece JOE'S GARAGE, Zappa's THING-FISH is an epic rock opera on a grand scale. The comical narration by Ike Willis in the title role, with his own Amos-&-Andy-ish dialect, may seem like harmless buffoonery on the surface, but there is a dastardly evil undercurrent. The overall theme is the attempt by the establishment to systematically do away with certain undesirables in society. Instead, bizarre mutations called the mammy nuns are created and proceed to overtake mankind through the context of a Broadway show. Along the way, Zappa's compositional and satirical genius is in full creative overdrive as he manipulates his many strange characters (including Terry and Dale Bozzio as ignorant theater goers) through the weird libretto. Although many of the musical pieces only work in the context of the story, a dramatic reworking of the classic "The Torture Never Stops," the driving "You Are What You Is" and the gospel-sounding "The Meek Shall Inherit Nothing" are stand-out performances. Disc two continues with strange robotic voices in "The Crab-Grass Baby," the rocking "No Not Now" and it's backwards-running counterpart "Won Ton On" as the grand finale. SKU: 5066301

Singles, The [Remastered]
The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (bass); Topper Headon (drums). Producers include: Mickey Foote, Lee Perry, Bill Price, Sandy Pearlman, Guy Stevens. Amidst all the punk history and revolutionary rhetoric, it's easy to forget that the Clash was one hell of a singles band, capable of releasing one propulsively catchy song after another. This collection, which moves chronologically from the band's early days at the heart of the UK punk movement to the funk experimentation of its latter career, serves as both stunning career resume and perfect introduction for the neophyte. The raging, righteous anger and blazing guitars of punk anthems "White Riot" and "Complete Control" rub shoulders with the reggae rhythms of "White Man in Hammersmith Palais." Rap and funk rear their heads (in a distinctly British way) on "The Magnificent Seven" and "Radio Clash." Manic, post-punk rockabilly accompanies Joe Strummer's state-of-the-union address on "Know Your Rights," and the Mick Jones-sung "Should I Stay or Should I Go" makes a case for itself as a garage-rock classic on the order of "Louie Louie." For all the political smarts the group consistently displayed in its lyrics, THE SINGLES shows that the band's music was never less than enthralling. No matter how stern the Marxist theories to which the band members subscribed in their early days, they could never resist an old-fashioned rock & roll hook. SKU: 1070819

War And Peace Vol.2
Personnel includes: Ice Cube, Mack 10, Ms. Toi, Krayzie Bone, Chris Rock, Jato Felony, Pain In Da Ass, One Eye (vocals); Ralphie Boy (keyboards); DJ Joe Rodriquez (scratches). Producers include: DJ Joe Rodriquez, Carl "Chucky" Thompson, One Eye, T-Bone, Ice Cube. Includes liner notes by Jeff Chang. The second volume of WAR & PEACE proved that Ice Cube had not mellowed with age, the strains of a critically acclaimed film career notwithstanding. Much of the disc aspires to the sort of relentless intensity Cube hadn't matched since his solo debut, AMERIKKA'S MOST WANTED. While more restrained than the Bomb Squad's hyperkinetic collages of sound, Dr. Dre's laid-back groovesare a perfect match for Cube's acerbic ghetto wit and biting social commentary. Rolling drum programming and bouncy Roger Troutman-style basslines give the album an old-school feel. Much of the album marries intense grooves and polished production with humorous skits; "Pimp Homeo," for example, is a funny takeoff on ROMEO AND JULIET. Tracks like "Until We Rich," on the other hand, are more laid-back R&B affairs, with more reflective, socially conscious lyrics. While nothing on the set approaches the political and social fire that categorize AMERIKKA'S MOST WANTED, WAR & PEACE still manages to showcase a rap legend at the top of his form. SKU: 1031071

Family Man, The
Original score composed by Danny Elfman. Director Brett Ratner's romantic fantasy about a driven yuppie who gets a vaguely supernatural second chance at happiness features a soundtrack that's in part an interesting mix of soulful romantic ballads. These are both old, such as the Delfonics "La La (Means I Love You)," and new, such as Edwin McCain's "I Don't Know How I Got By." There are also several eclectic exceptions, including an operatic aria from "Rigoletto," a previously unreleased Elvis Costellosong ("You Stole My Bell"), and a prime example of early '90s hair band pop (Mr. Big's diabolically catchy "To Be With You"). There are also an '80s New Wave fave (Talking Heads "Once in a Lifetime"), and of course, selections from the de rigeur Danny Elfman original score. SKU: 1050051
