Flick Of The Switch [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Brian Johnson (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Phil Rudd (drums). Recorded at Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas. Originally released onAtlantic (80100). Includes liner notes by Brad Tolinski. Detractors have long called minimalist bands such as AC/DC, Bad Company and ZZ Top formulaic. By paring rock down to its most basic elements, these bands forged a musical terrain where anything less than mastery over the form would reveal gaping holes in the structure. Remember that there are no keyboards filling up space, or creating diversions on an AC/DC record. The point is, AC/DC's approach may not have varied an inch over the years and it may very well be a formula. It is also a highly effective one. FLICK OF THE SWITCH carries the spirit of the band's hard rock crunch with capable aplomb. Massive guitar riffs that could capsize a medium size boat, a stomping 4/4-rhythm section and Brian Johnson screeching like a banshee on the warpath. The album's highlights are the mid-tempo "Rising Power," and the bruising title track. When Johnson screams "With a flick of the switch she'll blow you sky high" on the latter, AC/DC proves itself still capable of explosive outbursts. SKU: 1084958

Sound Affects
The Jam: Paul Weller, Bruce Foxton, Rick Buckler. While other first-generation British punk bands embraced art and nihilism, the Jam offered working-class soul--solid, honest rhythms that were a ray of hope to the country's recession-racked youth. SOUND AFFECTS was released at the height of the Jam's popularity, and found frontman Paul Weller at his songwriting peak. Equally as influenced by Motown as by punk, Weller's songs defy categorization. While "Start!" (a No. 1 hit in England) is as upbeat as the best James Brown, the driving instrumentation of "Set TheHouse Ablaze," "Monday" and "Boy About Town" bears comparison to the the early Who. There are even ska echoes on "Music For The Last Couple." But the most enduring quality of these songs is their humanism. Even through Weller's early flirtation with Toryism, his deep concern for Britain's dispossessed was evident. "That's Entertainment" and "Man In The Corner Shop" speak of an England that everyone, from scooter-gangs to businessmen, can relate to. It was this everyman appeal, this boy-next-door earnestness, that a generation of British youth rallied around. SKU: 4134433

Apache/Wild Side Of The City Lights
2 LPs on 1 CD. Few reissue labels treat '50s rock and R&B artists with better care than England's Ace Records. This excellent compilation, combining two Link Wray albums in full, complete with a bonus track, "Street Beat," is a perfect example. Reissue labels mostly seem to think that the album as such did not exist in rock & roll prior to the Beatles, despite all evidence to the contrary. As a result, '50s and early-'60s artiststend to get only the compilation treatment, if that. Yet as this reissue shows, the album is a viable canvas for all sorts of musicians, and instrumental rock is not just limited to singles. Link Wray's style, featuring his own distinctive brand of post-Les Paul, pre-surf guitar playing, is a natural for the album format, both because it gives him the room to show off his versatility and because it gives him a chance to essay such instrumental rock hits (for other people) as the atmospheric "Apache" and the gloriously greasy "Raunchy," alongside such oddball choices as "Stars and Stripes Forever" and the Mexican-influenced "Viva Zapata." Lifehouse: Jason Wade (vocals, guitar); Sergio Andrade (bass); Diff (drums). Additional personnel: Ron Aniello (various instruments, guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion); Collin Hayden (electric guitar); Aaron Lord (viola); Marcus Barone (Chamberlain); Aaron Embry (keyboards); John Leftwich (string bass); Bob Glaub (bass); Jack Kelly, Matt Laug (drums); Walter Rodriquez (tambourine); Jude Cole, Kendall Payne (background vocals). Engineers: Ron Aniello, Neal Averon, Jim Scott. In the year 2000, you'd be well within your rights to assume there's little new ground to be broken by a guitar-bass-drums rock band. Admittedly, you'd probably be right; Lifehouse doesn't break any astonishing new ground or pioneer any new trends. That's not what this pop-rock trio is about. They're more concerning with crafting solid songs and arresting arrangements than being the Next Big Thing. Fortunately, their songcraft has proven solidenough to earn them a solid following. The group has clearly learned some lessons from the post-Nirvana school of alt-rock. They handily combine melodic, understated moments with emphatic sonic outbursts. Moody keyboards and delicate acoustic guitar walk hand in hand with hardy power chords and hard-hitting rhythms. Simple but effective melodic hooks keep the listener's attention focused on both the personal, ruminative lyrics and the pop-friendly production. SKU: 1064338

All The Greatest Hits
Zapp: Roger Troutman (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, voice box); Zapp Troutman (vibraphone, background vocals); Lester Troutman (drums, drum programming); Larry Troutman (percussion). Additional personnel includes: Greg Jackson (vocals, keyboards); The Mighty Clouds Of Joy, Shirley Murdock, Bobby Glover (vocals); Carl Cowen (flute, horns); Clarence Satchell (saxophone); Jerome Derrickson, Eddie Barber, Larry Hatcher (horns); Dale DeGroat (keyboards, drum programming, background vocals); Billy Beck (keyboards, background vocals); Robert "Rumba" Jones (percussion); Robert Smith(drum programming, background vocals); Bootsy Collins, Shelly Smith, Delores Smith, Dick Smith, LeRoy "Sugarfoot" Bonner, Janetta Boyce, Gary "Mudbone" Cooper, Malia Franklin (background vocals). Producers: Roger Troutman, Zapp Troutman, Bootsy Collins. Engineers include: Greg Ward, Jim Vitti, Mike Iacopelli. Principally recorded at United Sound Systems and Sound Room East, Detroit, Michigan. This 17-track compilation contains three certifiable R&B classics: the funk anthem "More Bounce To The Ounce," the trendsetting "Computer Love," and one of the finest singles of the '80s, Roger Troutman's solo smash "I Want To Be Your Man." The last is an achingly soulful and slow groove accented with the best use of the Vocoder (a device that changes the pitch of a voice without altering its tempo) in pop music history. Vocoder effects appear throughout GREATEST HITS. They may have seemed gimmicky in less imaginative hands, but Troutman was also an inventive and creative producer and songwriter. Sadly, Troutman was murdered in 1999 by his brother Larry, a former member of Zapp. This exceptional compilation is a tribute to Roger's talents and a perfect introduction to Zapp and Roger. Portfolio
Personnel: Grace Jones (vocals); Lance Quinn, Cliff Morris, Bobby Eli (guitar); Don Renaldo (strings, horns); Carlton "Cotton" Kent (piano, keyboards); Ron "Have Mercy" Kersey (Frender rhodes); Vincent Montana, Jr. (vibes); Wilbur Bascomb (bass); Allen Schwatzberg (drums); Moto (tambourine); Larry Washington (congas); Barbara Ingram, Carla Benson, Evette Benton (background vocals). Recorded at Sigma Sound Studios, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jones first album, produced bydisco auteur Tom Moulton, finds the star backed by the Gamble & Huff house band, and stylistically it's very much of a piece with G&H's danceable R&B of the period--poppish, and lightly funky, with lots of extended instrumentals (probably a good thing, given the limitations of Jones' vocals). Highlights include a wonderfully ominous version of Edith Piaf's "La Vie En Rose," (which Roman Polansky used to good effect in the film FRANTIC) and "I Need a Man," her first big hit, along with Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive," one of the best-known gay cult anthems of its era. Beaucoups Of Blues
Personnel: Ringo Starr (vocals, acoustic guitar, drums); Charlie Daniels, Dave Kirby, Chuck Howard, Sorrells Pickard, Jerry Reed, Jerry Shook, Jerry Kennedy (guitar); Pete Drake, Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar); George Richey, Grover Lavender, Jim Buchanan (fiddle); Charlie McCoy (harmonica); Roy Huskey, Jr., Buddy Harman (bass); D.J. Fontana (drums); The Jordanaires, Jeannie Kendal (background vocals). Recorded at Music City Recorders Studio, Nashville, Tennessee in June - July, 1970. Includes liner notes by Staffan Olander. Released in September 1970, BEAUCOUPS OF BLUES was a huge improvement over Ringo's somewhat awkward solo debut, SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY. Though the pure country music on BEAUCOUPS OF BLUES was presumably quite foreign to most Beatles fans in 1970, in hindsight, this is a superb country-rock album. While Ringo's deadpan voice seemed limited when compared to the voices of his fellow Beatles, it's perfectly suited to the simple melodies and down-to-earth lyrical concerns of the rock-oriented country songs he performs on this album. Backed by top Nashville musicians like pedal steel guitarist Pete Drake, Charlie Daniels and several members of Elvis Presley's band, Ringo wrings every ounce of emotion out of such compelling country noir narratives as "Love Don't Last Long" and the Vietnam-eraheartbreaker "Silent Homecoming." With BEAUCOUPS OF BLUES, Ringo made a raw, real country-rock album that was as good as anything that Gram Parsons and Mike Nesmith were doing at that time and it remains one of Ringo's finest solo albums. Contino Sessions, The [ECD]
Death In Vegas: Tim Holmes (keyboards); Richard Fearless (DJ). Additional personnel: Iggy Pop, Dot Allison, Bobby Gillespie, Jim Reid (vocals); Ian Button (guitar); Seamus Beaghen, Gary Burns (keyboards); Ali Friend (acoustic bass); Matt Flint (bass); Simon Hanson, Will Blanchard (drums); London Community Gospel Choir (background vocals). Recorded at The Contino Rooms and The Strongroom, London, England; Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. Richard Fearless and Tim Holmes are the masterminds behind Death in Vegas. They wrote most of the songs on THE CONTINO SESSIONS and laid down loops, beats and electronics, their tracks augmented bya revolving cast of friends. For the most part, the album combines majestic, spacy Britrock a la Spiritualized with the studio techniques of electronica. The opener, "Dirge," is a near-instrumental that rings electronic variations on an incessant two-chord vamp, in the manner of a modern-day Hawkwind. Several cuts are all-instrumental, leaving Fearless and Holmes to work their subtle magic on harmonically simple but texturally shifting frameworks. A couple of famous guest vocalist pop up--Iggy Pop delivers a tale of murder and mayhem on the ominous, punky "Aisha" and Jesus & Mary Chain's Jim Reid is on hand for "Broken Little Sister," a moody rocker not dissimilar to Reid's previous work. Things close on a celebratory note with the rapturous, elegantly unfolding instrumental "Neptune City." SKU: 1026590

BBC Sessions, The
Cocteau Twins: Elizabeth Frazer (vocals); Robin Guthrie (guitar); Simon Raymonde (bass). Producers include: John Owen Williams, Dale Griffin, Mark Radcliffe, Barry Andrews, Lis Roberts. Engineers include: Dave Dade, Mike Engles, Nick Gomm. Recorded live between 1982 and 1996. The Cocteau Twins' BBC SESSIONS, taken predominantly from the early '80s period of the band's first three albums and EPs, boasts a number of previously unreleased tracks. One such cut, a rarecover, is a suitably anguished arrangement of the Billie Holiday classic "Strange Fruit." A number of songs from the 1996 album MILK & KISSES complete the set. The collection illustrates the early and late periods of the Twins' career, from their somewhat dark, mystical, and percussive beginnings to the celebratory guitar paeans of later work. One might say it is an incomplete meal, and idealists will doubtless crave a main course from the intervening decade. But there is still plenty here for current fans and newcomers alike to relish. This collection presents the Twins in a 'live' environment for the first time on record-the acoustic rearrangements of the TWINLIGHTS EP notwithstanding. Fraser's stunning operatic vocals, far from being trite, are sublime and unique. She sings here with a refreshing spontaneity and passion that has not always been fully captured in the lush production of the later studio albums. This clarity and freshness set BBC SESSIONS apart sufficiently from the albums proper for this collection to warrant a place in the devotee's library. SKU: 5026687
