Tigerlily
Personnel: Natalie Merchant (vocals, piano, organ, vibraphone); Jennifer Turner (electric & acoustic guitars, background vocals); John Holbrook (electric guitar, organ); Matt Henderson (electric guitar, bass); Eric Schenkman (electric guitar); Jay Unger (violin); Michelle Kinney (cello); Barrie Maguire (bass, 12-string electric guitar); Peter Yanowitz (drums, percussion); Adrian Lopez Guevarra, Randy Grant (percussion); Katell Keineg (background vocals). Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York and The Club House, Germantown, New York from December 1994 to March 1995. Super-serious Natalie Merchant has loosened upsince leaving 10,000 Maniacs. From the soulful march, "San Andreas Fault," that opens her solo debut, it is obvious she has found a freedom in going solo. It's evident in her less restrictive vocals and in a tighter, more expansive musical sound. Her lyrics, no surprise, remain somber. But in finally recording a song as throbbingly funky as "Carnival," Merchant offers a glimpse of what she always had lurking inside when she flailed about onstage with the Maniacs. And "River," a tribute to the late River Phoenix, gives her a chance to belt a lyric out--a pleasant, surprising change from her usual folkie whisper. TIGERLILY also includes some simple piano tracks that recall the earliest Maniacs records. The piano-voice duet has always been Merchant's forte, and her sweet, rich voice cuts through the heartbreaking loss of "Beloved Wife" and the unrequited love of "The Letter." And then, just when you think the piano is her sweetest ally, a captivating fiddle joins her and her piano for the winsome "Cowboy Romance." SKU: 3102522

Additional personnel includes: Fred Durst, Kid Rock, Everlast, Stephan Jenkins, Sugar Ray, Chris Davis, Jagged Edge (vocals); Fat Joe, Method Man, Nas, Prodigy, Jermaine Dupri, Kenny Kash, Mike Ranson, Jamel Simmons, Big Dash, Donald McFarland (rap vocals); Jackie Presti (conductor); Tony Fredianelli (guitar, bass); Eric Ambel, Donnie Mathis (guitar); Irwin Fisch (organ); Richard Johnson (keyboards); Brian Count (drums); Randy Allen (programming); DJ Flare (turntables); Eartha James, Verolyn Kennebrew, Charles King, Josette Lumpkin, Daniel Moore, William Swann, Sharon Walters, Natalye Woodson, Bo Skaggs Nitty, Karmine Wilson, Charlene Crockett (background vocals). Producers include: Randy Allen, Jermaine Dupri, Jam Master Jay, Dante Ross, John Gamble. Engineers include: Jeremy Mitchell, Kevin Crouse, Doug Wilson. Almost 20 years after their debut, the legendary rap artists Run, DMC, and DJ Jam Master Jay are still going strong. Though they emerged onto the scene sporting shelltoe Adidas and rapping over simple beats, Run-DMC captured the public's attention with theirunique brand of rap-rock. CROWN ROYAL features Run rhyming over rock-flavored drum patterns alongside some of the new century's more popular bad boys; "Them Girls" features Fred Durst, "Take the Money and Run" features Everlast, and "The School of Old" features Kid Rock. Hip-hop guest artists are also much in evidence. Fellow Queens natives Nas and Prodigy dedicate their verses to the almighty borough on "Queens Day," and Method Man adds his usual rhyme expertise on "Simmons Inc." But it's the album's title track that revisits the time when Run-DMC's music was synonymous with hip-hop; DMC's signature chorus reminds the listener just how influential these veterans are. Shots
Third album, following 2003's 'Seize The Day', from acclaimed Dublin singer songwriter whose funky collision of Irish traditional song, reggae, hip hop and rock with hard hitting political lyricshas gained him a cult following and seen him compared to such greats as Christy Moore and Shane McGowan. This album, recorded mostly live in the studio in a matter of weeks, has a rawer, looser, more rock feel than his earlier work. SKU: 6585825

Real Illusions (Reflections)
Personnel: Tony Mcalpine (guitar, keyboards); Dave Weiner (guitar); Billy Sheehan (bass guitar); Jeremy Colson (drums). Steve Vai remains an eclectic rogue in the world of guitar virtuosos. While his staggering chops precede him, Vai is known for favoring artistic, emotional expression over blazing six-string shredding just for its own sake. With an ensemble that includes bassist Billy Sheehan, drummer Jeremy Colson, and percussionist Gregg Bissonette, Vai presents his first new studio work since 1999's THE ULTRA ZONE. REAL ILLUSIONS: REFLECTIONS is the first chapter in a trilogy of concept albums. Vai offers a cryptic outline of a spiritual journey, with a well-balanced combination of all-instrumental and vocal tracks (with Vai himself ably handling singing duties). "Firewall" employs a meaty horn section for a slice of electrified neo-funk. "Lotus Feet" teams Vai with Holland's Metropole Orkest and electric-bass heavyweight Bryan Beller. The overall result is ethereal and lyric in its presentation. Vai's wild imagination runs amok on REAL ILLUSIONS,which entrances listeners with its almost limitless vistas. SKU: 6583226

Very Best Of The Moody Blues, The
THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES contains vintage photographs and a conversation with Justin Hayward. Producers include: Tony Clarke, 10cc, Jeff Wayne, Pip Williams, Tony Visconti. Compilation producer: Dorian Wathen. Engineers include: Tony Visconti. Recorded between 1964 and 1988. Includes liner notes by John Reed. All tracks have been digitally remastered. By keeping it simple and sticking to the hits, this collection successfully relates the story of this pioneering band. The Moody Blues began as a Gerry & the Pacemakers-like, R&B-influenced band fronted by sad-voiced singer Denny Laine, who is heardhere on "Go Now." Laine was replaced by Justin Hayward, keyboardist Mike Pinder brought in a Mellotron, and the band hooked up with the London Symphony Orchestra to make the first orchestral-rock album DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, from which "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White Satin" are included on this album. Over the next few years the band banged out several gem albums that were full of a distinctive mix of folk-tinged ballads and ambitious prog-rock. Cuts from this period take up a healthy piece of this collection. After a lengthy sabbatical, the Moodies made a comeback in 1981, and with an updated sound (more synth, less Mellotron) the hits began anew. The last section of this album features the songs that brought the Moody Blues back to life. THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES is a definitive and accurate portrait of the group, and a good place for neophytes to begin. SKU: 3104656

Angel's Egg (Radio Gnome Invisible Vol.2)
In retrospect, it's hard to believe both FLYING TEAPOT and its successor ANGELS EGG were released within months of each other in 1973. Each is an elaborate, distinct musical statement. ANGEL'S EGG is the second installment in Gong's legendary "Radio Gnome Trilogy," and it expands upon the ground broken by TEAPOT admirably. Though the band was still pursuing their spacy art-rock direction, the sound here became simultaneously jazzier and more ethereal. Didier Malherbe's sax and flute took a more active role, as did Steve Hillage's elaborate guitar textures. An important personnel shift had also occurred with the arrival of drummer Pierre Moerlen, mallet percussionistMirielle Bauer and bassist Mike Howlett. These three were very much of the fusion school. After singer/songwriter Daevid Allen's departure, they would turn Gong into a full-fledged fusion outfit, but with Allen's whimsical songcraft still the defining factor, they simply add a more sophisticated instrumental edge. ANGEL'S EGG is a bit more sophisticated than TEAPOT, but an equal masterpiece. SKU: 4126652

2 LPs on 1 CD: THE SEEDS/A WEB OF SOUND. The Seeds: Sky Saxon (vocals, harmonica, bass); Jan Savage (guitar); Daryl Hooper (piano, organ); Rick Andridge (drums). Recorded in Hollywood, California. The Seeds' first two albums were also their best. THE SEEDS, featuring the stomping garage-punk classics "Pushin' Too Hard" and "Can't Seem To Make You Mine," arguably the hardest pre-heavy metal singles, is clearly a snot-nose classic. It's all in the song titles--"Evil Hoodoo," "No Escape," "Girl I Want You"--and the malevolence of the band's playing, especially that of organist Daryl Hooper and guitarist Jan Savage. A WEB OF SOUND is both a refinement and an abandonment of this approach. Some songs, especially "Mr. Farmer" and "Tripmaker," are as punky and psychedelic as anything on the debut. The last track, the 14-minute "Up In Her Room" is a total trip, like the VelvetUnderground's "Sister Ray" reinterpreted by the free-jazz lunatics in the Red Crayola. Very weird, and if you're so inclined, very cool. Highly recommended. SKU: 1063482

Changing Faces
Changing Faces: Charisse Rose, Cassandra Lucas (vocals). Additional personnel: R. Kelly, Devante Swing, Darin "Piano Man" Whittington, Lafayette Carthon (various instruments); Keith Henderson (guitar); Peter Mokran, Martin Stebbing, Stevo George (programming). Producers include: R. Kelly; Kenny "Smoove" Kornegay; Devante Swing; Heavy D; Dinky Bingham. Engineers include: Peter Mokran, Martin Stebbing; Stevo George. On their self-titled debut, the harmonizing duo of Cassandra Lucas and Charisse Rose are striving to change the face of today's female delivered R&B. While they might be compared to groups such like Mel & Kim or Zhane, what distinguishes Changing Faces is their delivery of smooth, groovy love songs instead of the likely dance tracks. With hip-hop firmly in control of the current scene, today's R&B lacks the slow rhythmic tunes that dominated in the '80s. But the vocal performances on CHANGING FACES reassure theaudience that '90s rhythm & blues can be as smooth as ever. The softness of "Thoughts Of You" is enhanced by Darrin Whittington's piano work, while R. Kelly provides his trademark "bump and grind" for "Foolin' Around," "All Is Not Gone" and "Stroke You Up" (the duo's first single). Kenny "Smoove" Kornegay contributes the majority of the production, keeping the vibe of CHANGING FACES true to his own fitting nickname. SKU: 1005338

Trees Are Dead And Dried Out Wait For Something Wild, The
Debut full-length from North London extreme metal band follows two critically lauded EPs. Frantic, brutal and uncompromising, the music jumps, twists, turns and stops on a dime and is topped off by the crazed outpourings of two vocalists. Drawing comparisons with US noisecore outfits Converge and Dillinger Escape Plan, the album is produced by Kevin 'Caveman' Shirley (Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin). SKU: 6524913

Here For You
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Released just as Petula Clark's visibility was higher in the US than it had been in nearly 30 years thanks to a show-stopping run as Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber's SUNSET BOULEVARD, 1998's HEAR FOR YOU was her first album of all-new material in years. Heavy on Broadway-style material like four classic Stephen Sondheim tunes, "Stranger in Paradise" from KISMET, and (really) "Pinball Wizard" from THE WHO'S TOMMY, the 14-track set places Clark's still-remarkable voice in sympathetic orchestral settings. Twounexpected highlights are a pair of Clark compositions, "Easy"--from the 1990 musical SOMEONE LIKE YOU, which Clark co-wrote and starred in--and "Here For You," a lovely ballad. HEAR FOR YOU is an utterly delightful surprise. SKU: 4124913

Accentuate The Positive
Personnel: Al Jarreau (vocals); Anthony Wilson (guitar); Tollak Ollestad (harmonica); Keith Anderson (tenor saxophone); Russell Ferrante (piano); Larry Goldings (Hammond b-3 organ); Larry Williams (keyboards); Christian McBride (bass instrument); Peter Erskine, Mark Simmons (drums); Luis Conte (percussion). Recording information: CapitolStudios, Hollywood, California. Al Jarreau's career has had some ups and downs, but, through it all, the versatile vocalist has kept his impressive craft on point. This is certainly true on 2004's ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE, which finds Jarreau giving a contemporary spin to standards and songs in the mode of classic bop and swing. Jarreau's breathy, nuanced tenor and the jazzy embellishments that characterize his delivery are especially well suited to the program here. "The Nearness of You," for example, is given new life by Jarreau's sweet, elastic phrasing, while the chugging, funky twist on the title track features his unfaltering sense of rhythm. Jarreau's vocal additions to instrumental jazz classics (Dizzy Gillespie's "Groovin' High") prove him heir to the throne established by singing innovator Eddie Jefferson, and his work on more traditional balladry (the smoothly shuffling "My Foolish Heart") is equally impressive. Abetted by fine session men on the order of Christian McBride (bass), Anthony Wilson (guitar), and Peter Erskine (drums), Jarreau has made a solid and thoroughly enjoyable album that will appeal to aficionados of classic vocal and instrumental jazz, and well as fans of his work in the adult-contemporary vein. Marvellous (The Best Of the Damned)
The Damned: Dave Vanian (vocals); Captain Sensible (guitar); Algy Ward, Paul Gray (bass); Rat Scabies (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. A compilation released by Big Beat to cash in on the Damned's two-year Chiswick period, MARVELLOUS--isn't. However it does contain whatever hits they had during this time, most notably "Love Song," "Smash it Up" and a radio edit of "I Just Can't Be Happy Today." This was a pretty significant juncture in the Damned's career; these sessions took place after the departure of guitarist Brian James and their initial split. This period, coupled with some TV appearances, was the beginning of the Damned's commercial upswing. Their payoff was a kind of enduring notoriety. Included here aretheir most famous covers--"Ballroom Blitz," "White Rabbit," and a live version of "Looking at You." For completists only. SKU: 1054534

Mrs. Cruff
Almost impossibly rare debut album from broken beat meister Andrew Carthy, originally released on the minuscule Pleasure Records in 1997. Now reissued by Ninja Tune, the album, while quite basic by his later standards, shows the evolution of his sound through dub inflected trip-hop punctuated with ethnic beatsand jazzy trumpet, and introduced his penchant for wacky song titles, such as the single 'Chicken In A Box'. Trouble Man
Personnel includes: Marvin Gaye (vocals, piano, Moog); Trevor Lawrence (alto, tenor & baritone saxophones). Originally released on Tamla (322) in December, 1972. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Gavin Lurssen at The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California. Tenuous though it is, history books list it as a Marvin Gaye album. Those who did not see the film (from which this is a soundtrack) might unsuspectingly think Marvin might sing on it. In fact he does on one track, the titlesong. The film was another low-budget blaxploitation detective movie that fell short of both Superfly (Curtis Mayfield) and Shaft (Isaac Hayes). Musically, |
