Let's Get It On [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Marvin Gaye (vocals, piano); Rene Hall, David Van DePitte (arranger, conductor); Melvin "Wah Wah" Ragin,Lewis Shelton, David T. Walker, Robert White, Eddie Willis (guitar); Ernie Watts, Plas Johnson (saxophone); Marvin Jenkins, Joe Sample (piano); Emil Richards, Victor Feldman (vibraphone); Wilton Felder, James Jamerson (bass); Eddie "Bongo" Brown (drums, bongos); Paul Humphries, Uriel Jones (drums); Bobbye Hall Porter (bongos). Recorded at Hitsville, Detroit, Michigan and Hitsville-West, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Tamla (329). Includes liner notes by Ben Edmonds. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Relishing the artistic freedom afforded by the success of WHAT'S GOING ON, Marvin Gaye recorded this sultry paean to sex. Where its predecessor relied on complex arrangements, the straightforward sound of LET'S GET IT ON focused attention on its tight rhythms, strong melodies and Gaye's expressive singing. Either celebratory, as on the explicit title track, or reflective ("Distant Lover"), he explores a range of emotions with equal ease and intensity. Seductive sound matches seductive lyrics and attitudes at a time when Al Green, Barry White and Isaac Hayes laid claim to the "lover man" sobriquet. LET'S GET IT ON showed Marvin Gaye to be its undoubted master. SKU: 1080351

Sweet Home Alabama
Original score composed by George Fenton. The soundtrack to this Reese Witherspoon flick is crammed with contemporary pop stars such as Jewel, Sheryl Crow and SheDaisy, and flavors of the moment such as Avril Lavigne and Uncle Kracker. Jewel's version of the Lynyrd Skynyrd title track is as creditable as you'd expect, while SheDaisy's hit "Mine All Mine" still sounds catchy even though it's no longer current. Avril Lavigne shows why she's the toast of teenage girls countrywide with her statement of intent "Falling Down" ("Someday I'll live in a house, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera/but you know that's not for now"), and the aforementioned Uncle Kracker sound suitably downhome with "To Think I Used to Love You." Of course no early '00s soundtrack would be complete without press darling Ryan Adams, whose upbeat shuffle "Gonna Make You Love Me" sticks in the brain long after it's made its exit. Sheryl Crow shows herrange with Hank Williams's "Long Gone Lonesome Blues," and finally Dolly Parton brightens up the closing credits with her cheerful Appalachian "Marry Me," perhaps SWEET HOME ALABAMA's best track. Ummagumma
UMMAGUMMA features a set of live performances on Disc 1 and a collection of solo studio projects by various band members on Disc 2. Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (drums). Disc 1 was recorded live at Mothers, Birmingham, England and live at The Manchester College Of Commerce, England in June 1969. Party-liners may favor DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, but diehard space cadets recognize UMMAGUMMA as the pinnacle of post-Barrett Floyd's achievement. Originally released as a double LP, the first record is a live recording from 1969, while the second features four extended cuts written by (and featuring) each of the four bandmembers in turn. Eschewing the catchy, Kinks-influenced pop kaleidoscope of the band's first album, thelive portion focuses on extended, spacy near-instrumentals, heavy on acid-fueled jamming and atmospheric electronic textures. From the Eastern-tinged "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" to the over-the-top psychosis of "Careful With That Axe, Eugene," UMMAGUMMA's first half is ground zero for the genre that would come to be known as space rock. The solo efforts on the second half are undoubtedly the band's most experimental, unconventional efforts ever. They make good use of the avant-garde techniques that were a key early influence, like musique concrete-style tape collage and sound effects. Along the way, there's some lovely folk-tinged balladry, courtesy of Roger Waters ("Grantchester Meadows"), and some proto-prog keyboard wizardry (Richard Wright's multi-part "Sysyphus" (sic). Essential Elvis Vol.5 (Rhythm and Country)
RHYTHM AND COUNTRY is a collection of previously unreleased studio outtakes by Elvis, recorded at Stax Studios in July and December of 1973. Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals); Kathy Westmoreland, Voice, J.D. Sumner & The Stamps (background vocals). Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Engineers include: Al Pachucki, Mike Moran, Dick Baxter. Includes liner notes by Ernst Mikael Jorgensen. This is part of RCA's Essential Elvis series. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Elvis Presley recorded his studio albums live, leading his band through take after take until he was satisfied with a recording's feel. Producer Felton Jarvis kept the tape rolling throughout these sessions, never knowing when the group would nail its final take. As a result, the RCA vaults are full of Presley studio tapes. Some of these tapes have been released through the ESSENTIAL ELVIS series, of which ELVIS RHYTHM AND COUNTRY is the fifth volume. This disc documents Elvis' two 1973 marathon sessions at Stax Studio in Memphis, during which he produced material for the albums GOOD TIMES, PROMISED LAND, and RAISED ON ROCK. RHYTHM AND COUNTRY allows listeners to hear Elvis and his band without the added backing vocals, horns, strings, and percussion that often mar Presley's '70s albums. Even better, it includes snippets of Presley singing "Columbus Stockade Blues," "Muleskinner Blues," and "Softly As I Leave You" between takes. Still, the recordings Elvis completed at these sessions are not among his greatest work, mostly because the songs themselves are not as strong as Presley'sperformances of them. There are enough great moments here to satisfy serious Elvis fans, though. SKU: 3102133

Weekend Never Starts Round Here, The
The first full-length by Scottish miserabilists Arab Strap is a dark-toned collection of acoustic guitars, hushed vocals, occasional electronics (mostly tape loops and vague trip-hop beats), lo-fi aesthetics and nakedly personal lyrics. Singer Aidan Moffat sounds so genuinely aggrieved on songs like "General Plea To A Girlfriend," "Deeper" and the self-lacerating "Kate Moss" that paying close attention to the lyrics makes the listener vaguely uncomfortable, as if they're inadvertently eavesdropping on an emotional conversationat the next table. Later albums like PHILOPHOBIA were more focused and melodically stronger-and if anything, even darker--but in its own scattershot way, THE WEEK NEVER STARTS AROUND HERE is a more powerful record. Fans of Joy Division and Palace may find Arab Strap a worthy successor to those mope-rock giants. SKU: 1018091

Silver And Gold
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar, background vocals); Spooner Oldham (piano, organ); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Oscar Butterworth (drums, percussion); Jim Keltner (drums); Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt (background vocals). Recorded at Redwood Digital, Redwood City, California. Quietly introspective and sonically rich, SILVER & GOLD is the millennial successor to 1972's HARVEST. Havingoriginally planned it as a solo project, Young spent three years hashing the album's details out before inviting legendary studio cats bassist "Duck" Dunn and keyboard player Spooner Oldham into the studio, along with longtime friends Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris who provide exquisite background harmonies. Opening with the warm and simple "Good to See You," the remaining nine songs waft along on waves of contentment. Framed by Young's soft, low delivery, wheezing harmonica and Ben Keith's softly whining pedal steel, the 10 tracks on SILVER & GOLD are very much a look back at this rock & roll Hall Of Famer's life. The most obvious example is "Buffalo Springfield Again," an easy-going number that sees past longtime grudges towards the original fun goal of being in a band. Elsewhere, Young's inspiration comes from his (and everyone else's) father in "Daddy Went Walkin'," and the richness relationships bring to life on the title track; while with "Red Sun," he bypasses the bar life for quality time with his main squeeze. SILVER & GOLD is yet another high point in an already illustrious career. SKU: 1031320

I See A Darkness
Personnel: Will Oldham, Bob Arellano, Colin Gagon, Paul Oldham, Peter Townshend. After abandoning the Palace moniker for a straight-up solo career, Will Oldham seemed to lose his focus a bit, but rechristened as Bonnie Prince Billy, he's regained it in spades. Where his previous solo efforts sounded thrown-together and lacked real songcraft, I SEE A DARKNESS is probably Oldham's most consistent, rewarding batch of songs since the Palace Brothers '93 debut. For once, the ever-elusive Oldham sounds like he's making a genuine effort to communicate--the relatively straightforward (but stillpoetic) lyrics, nicely arranged (but still lo-fi) sonic backdrops, and song structures with hummable (!) choruses are all unprecedented and highly agreeable developments. The titular darkness pervades much of the album, but there's an underlying warmth that shines through, making this an emotionally well-balanced effort. SKU: 4124309

Healer, The
Personnel: John Lee Hooker (vocals, guitar, 12-string guitar, National Steel guitar); Bonnie Raitt (vocals, slide guitar); Roy Rogers (guitar, slide guitar); David Hidaldo (guitar, accordion); George Thorogood, Robert Cray, Carlos Santana, Cesar Rosas, Henry Vestine (guitar); Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica); Steve Berlin (saxophone); Chester Thompson (keyboards, synthesizer); Larry Taylor, Conrad Lozano, Richard Cousins (bass); Louie Perez, Scott Matthews, Fito de la Parra, Ndugu Chancler (drums); Armando Peraza (congas); Chepito Areas (timbales). Producers: Roy Rogers, Carlos Santana, Jim Gaines. Engineers: Sam Lehmer, Jim Gaines, Mark Lynette. Recorded at Russian Hill Recording Studios, San Francisco, California; The Plant, Sausalito, California; Leon Haywood Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by John Bitzer. When popular culture embraced John Lee, purists turned up their noses. They should have been pleased that the world's greatest living Delta bluesman was going to make some money before he turned up his toes. Teaming up with Carlos Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Canned Heat (not for the first time) and others, lent Hooker's blues a contemporary gloss. It took the album to the upper reaches of the album charts around the world, brought him a number of Grammy awards and a new career in advertising. The blues is not only a healer, it drinks brandy and wears jeans. The Santana guitarsolo on the title track is breathtaking and Hooker is the coolest senior citizen in the world. SKU: 1033608

Operation Stackola
Luniz: Yukmouth, Knumskull. Additional personnel: Piano Man (keyboards), Nik Nack, Knucklehead, Eclipse, Michael Marshall. Producers: DJ Fuse (tracks 1, 7, 10); Tone Capone (tracks 2-3, 15); Shock G. (tracks 4, 9); N.O. Joe (tracks 5, 8, 11); E-A-Ski, CMT (track 6); Terry T. (track 12); Gino Blackwell (track 13); DJ Darryl (track 14). Engineers: Michael Denton, Darrin Harris, D Wiz. Recorded at Pajama Studios and Infinite Studios, Oakland, California. Samples include "What You Won't Do For Love" (as performed by Bobby Caldwell). In the tradition of artists like Too $hort, Dru Down and E-40 who have raised Oakland's rap scene, Luniz are another of California's "light it up and smoke it" crews. On OPERATION STACKOLA, Knumskull and Yukmouth beef up their region's catalog with a new-school type of gangsta/playa hip-hop. OPERATION STACKOLA correctly represents its West Coast family on "Put This Lead On Ya," which features the mack of the year, Dru Down, and uses the vocals of the late Eazy-E. "Broke Niggaz" also salutes their left coast forefathers by using material performed by Ice Cube. The topics might be typical of a gangsta rap act (only a little less graphic), but their sound is more funk-oriented, with production courtesy of N.O. Joe, E-A-Ski and Digital Underground's Shock G. For their debut, Luniz dig deep in the crates for the basis of their music. "I Got 5 On It" is a close relative of ClubNouveau's "Why You Treat Me So Bad," and "Playa Hata" takes its track directly from Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love." "Broke Hos" oddly reverses the role of Gwen Guthrie's "Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent" and supports the theory that a gold digger can be of either sex. Luniz bring forth a combination of rhythmic funk, laid-back rhymes and a whole new vocabulary. OPERATION STACKOLA takes their playa-infested city of Oakland another step forward in the hip-hop game. Please Describe Yourself
From the Scottish town that brought you the gentle sounds of Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura comes a horse (or dog) of an entirely different color. Glaswegian band Dogs Die in Hot Cars sounds like it spent the last several years holed up in a closet with the first four XTC albums, and to fine effect. Though cynics may decry the Andy Partridge-like vocal yelps, New Wave-influenced feel, and brashly melodic popcraft as too derivative, anyone who ever hoisted a lite beer to the uber-geek sounds of DRUMS & WIRES should be overjoyed at the way this gang of Scottish misfits has so perfectly captured that late-1970s/early-'80s vibe. You can almost see the skinny ties swinging back andforth in front of loud, primary-color suits as the Dogs work their magic, kicking up a fair amount of frenetic rock & roll dust even as they show off their well-schooled pop smarts on their debut album, PLEASE DESCRIBE YOURSELF. In Our Gun
Gomez: Ian Ball, Paul Blackburn, Tom Gray, Ben Ottewell, Olly Peacock. Additional personnel: Grace Elison (vocals); Tony Looby (alto & baritone saxophones); Rob Charles (tenor & baritone saxophones); Tony Robinson (trumpet, trombone, valve trombone, brass, organ); Dajon Everette (celeste, percussion); Danny Thompson (double bass); Graham Wakefield (samples). British darlings Gomez first came to public attention in the late '90s with their combination of contemporary Britpop and '60s psychedelic rock. To be fair to this quite modern band, a slight resemblance to the odd Traffic tune was about the extent of their flirtation with psychedelia. IN OUR GUN seems to find Gomez moving further away from those '60s roots without abandoning them altogether. Burbling synthesizers rub shoulders with jangling acoustic guitars, and Radiohead jostles with the Beatles for the reigning vocal influence. While there are a couple of stray Middle-Easternisms and other remnants of hippiedom to be found here, IN OUR GUN is more akin to the way the Beta Band channels those same spirits via modern electronica. Like Coldplay or Brits manque Smash Mouth, Gomez sounds like they've got just enough of their parents' records in their collection to maintain a senseof history without leaving Britpop's borders too far behind. Mary Poppins [Remastered]
Original score composed by Robert M. Sherman and RobertB. Sherman. Music arranged and conducted by Irwin Kostal. Producers: Ron Kidd, Randy Thornton, Ted Kryczko. Includes liner notes by Randy Thornston. Digitally remastered by Shawn Murphy, Bruce Botnick, Jeff Sheridan (Soundworks). A beautifully remastered and expanded version of the soundtrack to the innovative blend of live action and animation that some critics have called MY FAIR LADY for tots and the best children's movie ever made. Hyperbole? Perhaps, but there's no doubt that MARY POPPINS is the most inventive film musical of the '60s, with a score by longtime Disney contract writers Richard and Robert Sherman that positively brims with hits ("Chim-Chimeree," "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "A Spoonful of Sugar"). Interesting, perhaps ironic, historical footnote: The remastering here was partially supervised by Bruce Botnick, best known as the engineer on all of the Doors' albums. SKU: 1071522

Sleeping With The Past [Remastered]
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, piano, keyboards); Davey Johnstone (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Jonathan Moffett (guitar, drums); Vince Denham (saxophone); Fred Mandel, Guy Babylon (keyboards); Romeo Williams (bass); Marlena Jeter, Natalie Jackson, Mortonette Jenkins (background vocals). Recorded at Puk Studios, Denmark. Digitally remastered by Gus Dudgeon. SLEEPING WITH THE PAST finds Elton John finishing off the eighties with a mature, andabove all, serious musical statement. Kicking off with the tropical groove and social message of "Durban Deep," the album moves straight into the anthemic "Healing Hands," with its larger-than-life chorus, inspiring lyric and stirring piano runs. The seamless teamwork of Elton and Bernie Taupin reaches a career high with the instant classic, "Sacrifice," a tender ballad which instantly took its rightful place among the pair's best work. This varied, solid work finishes out with the epic production number that is "Amazes Me" and the quiet build and slow burn of "Blue Avenue." SKU: 1015370

Elvis' Golden Records Vol.3
ELVIS' GOLDEN RECORDS, VOL. 3 is a compilation of singles released between 1960 and 1963. Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals); The Jordanaires (background vocals). Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notesby Colin Escott. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Originally released in 1963, GOLDEN RECORDS VOLUME 3 contains nearly all of Elvis' top 10 hits released between his 1960 return from military service and early 1962. It was during this period that Elvis last topped the charts consistently; soon, the British invasion and a string of sub-par movie soundtracks would reduce both his stature and his record sales. GOLDEN RECORDS VOLUME 3 shows off the full range of Elvis' talent, with ballads ("Are You Lonesome Tonight?"), rockers ("Little Sister," "I Feel So Bad"), pop ("Stuck On You," "I Gotta Know") and even operatic songs ("It's Now Or Never," "Surrender") represented among the disc's twelve tracks. The album was issued on CD in 1989 and was subsequently remastered and re-reissued in 1997 with eight additional tracks. SKU: 4127226
